"[...]way." All the boys raised their hands, and it was declared a vote. "You will bring in your votes for captain," said the chairman. Tom Pinkerton drew a little apart with a conscious look, as he supposed, of course, that no one but himself would be thought of as leader. Slips of paper were passed around, and the boys began to prepare their ballots. They were brought to the chairman in a hat, and he forthwith took them out and began to count them. "Boys," he announced, amid a universal stillness, "there is one vote for Sam Pomeroy, one for Eugene Morton, and the rest are for Frank Fowler, who is elected." There was a clapping of hands, in which Tom Pinkerton did not join. Frank Fowler, who is to be our hero, came forward a little, and spoke modestly as follows: "Boys, I thank you for electing me captain of the club. I am afraid I am not very well qualified for the place, but I will do as well as I can."[...]".

By Peter John Pols I bought this to give away to a friends daughter - a YA - (Young Adult) - who I thought might read it and then laugh at it as being old, out of touch, silly, etc. I had hoped for at least a positive response, so I was very happy to find she came to me, and asked so many questions about business, the economy, getting a website, etc, all because she decided she wanted to begin a business due to reading The Cash Boy.I helped her with some ideas, and also read the book myself, and I can tell you, I understand the effect the book has on people. If you have been in business, you will understand what I am about to say: remember the start up times, when it was hard, and you felt each business deal, each decision, etc? Those we call 'the good days' before it gets really going, but at the same time you are very excited and motivated?Well that is the feeling Alger captures and gives you, and it inspires you to do something or re-connect to your business. Its wonderful and I am going to read more of his! Truly, without being over the top, if every American read one of these books, the recession would end, and we would be back on top in the world! Leading the way as we have before. We have lost touch with this feeling of success, its so sad we now look only to the government for leadership, when before we looked in the mirror.

Thorsson Horatio Alger books, these are novels that are appealing to those who read think and grow rich, and any other older money making books powerful `rags to riches stories'These wonderful stories are so powerful today in this economic climate. Back when they were written, there were no stimulus packages, no welfare as we know it, no food stamps, no income tax! Yet, today there is still such despair, that I feel it's very much the same....So having said that, this book is great for two reasons:1) its shows a method and mindset for success! It's not just a story, but the story explains the thinking and mindset of the hero who overcomes terrible odds to find success. The mindset explained is as powerful then as it is today.2) while the story is fiction, the hero figures out a way to succeed - it of course depends on factor 1 above, his mindset, but, once we see how his mind works, he thinks of a plan to become successful - and what I like is the principles that are used are not like typical fiction, but of ways and means that anyone could use to become successful, good business ideas that are still on target for today! This book is great for readers of any age, young or old, as long as you need a lift, and you want something powerful and good in your life, you will enjoy this great work by Alger!

By Felicity Barrington This review is not for the cynics and others who hate America, (whether they live here or not): There are many of us who still believe in the 'American Dream'. Who see in America as a land of opportunity, where a person may make what he wants of himself. This is the reason for the success of movies like the Secret, and books like Think and Grow Rich. Haters of this concept don't believe in the philosophy of 'if it's to be; it's up to me' and personal growth- they believe in the 'it's not my responsibility to be successful, it's the governments, or a union, etc' to make things right. For those of us who DO believe in America and what it stands for, we need to relax from time to time, from our dedicated path to success. From time to time, I like to read a novel or two, to unwind, but there are so few are positive, uplifting, and compelling novels that also promote personal growth and success principles. So finding one or two is GREAT NEWS! However I have made a wonderful discover of a new and magnificently published selection of Horatio Alger books, so now we don't just have one or two, but many, many hours ahead of us to relax, recharge and at the same time instill in ourselves the success principles we all know and love! The Cash Boy is about a teenage boy who is was taken from his relatives and given into the care of a kind woman. A story that is moving and powerful - one of Alger's best rags to riches stories and first time I've see it in print. Lots of exciting plot twists - very rich storytelling here to illustrate the path to success - education, freedom, action and daring. This is also a wonderful book to give a young person, what a gift it would be to have this type of book so early in life! Great plot and a fantastic read!
