This gentle and wonderful Children's classic novel with a window in to a bee's real world By Omnireader This is the story of a bee from her hatching onwards. Not only is it a magical world, but there are a considerable amount of facts about real bees and hives also encapsulated in this world of quiet wisdom.It appeals to many types of children: those who like to build things, those would like to fly, budding scientists, and those who enjoy the magic of dewy mornings and flowers.It can be read to the younger children, or given to older children 6 and older to read on their own.I still read my copy as an adult. It evokes my own childhood; plus I like to share it with new young listeners and then watch how they then are able to observe bees and gardens differently.Be ready to answer a lot of questions from your young ones! That is one of the best marks of learning in a child!
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A CHARMING BOOK THAT IS NOT JUST FOR CHILDREN By Scribe Reads Alot I absolutely loved this little book. I had read it as a child about ten times. Then lost my copy somewhere along the way between childhood and becoming an adult. it would cross my mine every so often through the years, and than I would forget about it. Now that the bee colonies are dying through the use of deadly pesticides I searched on Amazon and was delighted to find it again. You will never wonder about the power, magic, and service these hard working bees do for the world and humanity again. Maya is a hard working little bee that serves her queen and has quite a few adventures along with some dangerous situations.

It was originally published in Germany in 1922 and describes the adventures of a young bee that does not wish to conform to the work and standards in her hive. After many adventures with different kinds of flying and non-flying insects she is captured by a swarm of hornets. During her captivity she hears about a plan to destroy her hive, somehow escapes and succeeds in warning her home hive. Before giving the book to my grandchildren I wanted to re-read it and I did that with great pleasure. I warmly recommend it.
