About the Author Don C. Reed has been called the "Grandfather of Stem Cell Research Advocacy", for his decades of commitment, beginning with his citizen sponsorship of California's Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Act of 1999, named after his paralyzed son. "Roman's Law" raised $17 million in state funding, while attracting an additional $85 million from the National Institutes of Health and other sources. Don was grassroots organizer for America's first pro- stem cell research legislation, Senate Bill 253 (Ortiz) and others.
Don Reed served on the Board of Directors for Proposition 71, the citizens' initiative which led to the $3 billion California stem cell agency, and has supported it vigorously ever since. As David Jensen of the CALIFORNIA STEM CELL REPORT remarked, "Don has probably attended more meetings of the CIRM than anyone else, including staff".
Reed has been involved with state, national, and international efforts to preserve scientific freedom: opposing the Bush Administration's attempt to ban advanced stem cell research via the United Nations; supporting the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Acts of 2003 and 2007, twice passed by Congress and the Senate, but vetoed by former President George W. Bush; supporting the successful Missouri's Stem Cell Research Amendment 2, and Michigan's Proposal 2. Don's testimony for the Kennedy Committee on stem cell research is recorded in the Congressional Record, and he took great joy in cheering for Barack Obama, as the President signed the reversal of the onerous Bush restrictions.
Author of the forthcoming book, *STEM CELL BATTLES: Proposition 71 and Beyond*, from World Scientific Publishing, Inc., Reed is a prolific writer, with roughly 200 articles published by the Huffington Post alone. He has written five books and numerous magazine articles for such publications as THE LANCET.

A remarkable story of hope and progress that will change our destiny and inspire your active involvement for the future By Bill Remak The is a fascinating chronicle of the events that occurred written by Don Reed that describes the genesis of a movement that transformed how California initiated a venture to open the realm of new scientific discoveries to cure many chronic diseases facing our society today. An incredible look into how a few people inspired by the potential of developing the science of stem cell research with a vision of clinical trials broke through the resistance for change and brought real hope. The twists and turns of this journey persevering with an ever growing popularity for the cause, is a monumental milestone now recorded in California's history. The groundwork story will be looked at in the future as one of the greatest turning point of this century. This book is a read that will allow you to feel the sense of exciting scientific breakthroughs and progress as never before. An eye opener.

Don Reed's book is a great overview - easy to read By Brock Reeve As the director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and Christopher Reeve's brother, I know firsthand the importance of popular support for medical research. Don Reed's book is a great overview - easy to read, full of good stories and the science is accurate. The California stem cell program, CIRM, like the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, is dedicated to developing cures to diseases that have been called hopeless. Families will take comfort from "Stem Cell Battles". As importantly, any scientist wanting to dedicate his or her life to cure research should understand the patient perspective and the importance of working with patient advocates.

Pantages As a reference librarian and library manger, I looked for well written and researched books that would reliably treat challenging and timely subjects. Reed's book does just that and more. It is an important work on stem cell research and its advances, recommended for any library collection.Stem Cell Battles is a real page-turner. Don Reed writes from a layman’s point of view; his credentials and advocacy experience position him to thoroughly cover his subject and present the subject of stem cell research in an interesting and entertaining way.Reed writes that “nearly one in two Americans has an incurable disease or disability.” The stem cell research that Reed writes about deals with these diseases and disabilities that will affect every reader of the book, either directly or indirectly. Reed includes lists of diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer’s, cancers, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, Parkinson’s, and many others, and how stem cell research is a promise of a cure for them. Reed tells the story of meeting and involving Bob Klein in the challenging task of creating and passing California’s Proposition 71 in 2004, which established the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). Bob Klein and his successful leadership of CIRM are threads throughout the book. We become involved further in the story when Reed describes his personal introduction to spinal injury and paralysis through the football injury of his son Roman. Don Reed led the effort to create and pass the California legislation of the Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Act of 1999 (“Roman’s Law” which has raised millions for paralysis research).The book educates the reader about how embryonic stem cells for research are gathered, and how they are not destroying “living human beings.” Personhood as a legislative issue is covered, with descriptions of the many state and legislative efforts to make viable stem cell research illegal. The author describes the differences among types of stem cell research, with embryonic stem cells as the gold standard; he also discusses pluripotent stem cells and its appropriate applications, with adult stem cells as the least useful.We learn of the wide-ranging research on stem cells involving many researchers and institutions. Reed describes the many opponents of stem cell research. He notes that “the California stem cell program is a gift of hope to every ill or injured person in the world.” As one reads the book, the encouragement is that the stem cell research will lead to treatment and cures; the frustration is that the scientific process is slow and many of the readers and their friends and families will not live long enough to benefit from the cures enabled by stem cell research.Reed is an excellent writer, presenting a technical and multi-faceted subject as interesting and riveting stories. His background as an author, diver for Africa Marine World, and as a junior high school science Teacher of the Year enables him to present science in an engaging fashion. Since his son’s accident and paralysis, Reed has devoted his life to stem cell advocacy. He is known as “the grandfather of stem cell research and advocacy.” As founder and Vice President of Americans for Cures Foundation, Reed works closely with Bob Klein, the inspiration behind the California stem cell program.The book is appropriate for students doing research, for any general reader, and for anyone who is or knows the one in two Americans with an incurable disease or disability. The book fills a gap in public library collections, and is useful in academic collections as well because it covers the subject very well.
