0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining Summary of a Pretty Bad Guy in History By R.H. Written by John S. C. Abbott in the mid-1800s.....this book takes you through the entire history of Cortez in a simple fashion. I have to admit it is written well....split into smaller segments where you can read ten minutes a day easily and feel connected to the upswings and spiraling problems of Cortez's little adventure. What surprises me....after reading the book....is no movie has ever been made of the Spaniard. For reading purposes, I recommend the book for history readers and it would make for an interesting high school project (it is a bit violent but I don't see how you avoid telling that part of the story). It would be an excellent book if you had to visit someone laid up in the hospital and were reading for them. The thing I will leave you with over Cortez.....if you were looking for a guy who never had a plan and simply made up his life and goals from day to day.....this was the guy running on automatic, and it is shocking how far you could get without any real plan.

Great for a first encounter with Cortez and the conquest of Mexica Empire By Rod Riot This is a very entertaining book and despite its years, it has a very enjoyable narrative.I recommend this book for a first approach to Hernan Cortez, or for a first view of the history of the conquest of the Mexica Empire. With that in mind, this is a solid work.A major limitation of this book is that is too much Western-perspective oriented; very often falls in short sighted statements of the Mexica Empire culture, particularly in regard to their customs and ideology. Eg: Cortés had a "religious fervor", the Mexica were "idolaters" and "semi-barbarian".But even with these biases, inherent in a work produced in the nineteenth century, this is a book that will keep you reading the intense and adventurous life of the man who conquered the Mexica Empire.

I found it easy to read and difficult to put down. It explores both the perseverance and success of Cortes as well as his moral failures. I highly recommend.
