An early social comedy by Shaw on the horrors of war By Lawrance Bernabo George Bernard Shaw takes the title for this play from the opening life of Virgil's epic poem the "Aeneid," which begins "Of arms and the man I sing." Virgil glorified war and the heroic feats of Aeneas on the battlefield. However, Shaw's purpose in this play is to attack the romantic notion of war by presenting a more realistic depiction of war, devoid of the idea that such death and destruction speaks to nobility. Still, "Arms and the Man" is not an anti-war drama, but rather a satirical assault on those who would glorify the horrors or war.Shaw develops an ironic contrast between two central characters. The play begins with accounts of the glorious exploits of Major Sergius Saranoff, a handsome young Bulgarian officer, in a daring cavalry raid, which turned the war in favor of the Bulgarians over the Serbs. In contrast, Captain Bluntschil, a professional soldier from Switzerland, acts like a coward. He climbs up to a balcony to escape capture, he threatens a woman with a gun, and he carries chocolates rather than cartridges because he claims the sweets are more useful on the battlefield.In the eyes of Raina Petkoff, the young romantic idealist who has bought into the stories of battlefield heroism, Saranoff is her ideal hero. However, as the play proceeds, we learn more about this raid and that despite its success, it was a suicidal gesture that should have failed. Eventually Saranoff is going to end up dead if he continues to engage in such ridiculous heroics. Meanwhile, we realize that Bluntshcil has no misconceptions about the stupidity of war and that his actions have kept him alive."Arms and the Man" is an early play by Shaw, first performed in 1894, the same year he wrote "Mrs. Warren's Profession." The ending is rather tradition for comedies of the time, with all the confusion between the lovers finally getting cleared up and everybody paired up to live happily ever after. The choice of a young woman as the main character, who ultimately rejects her romantic ideals to live in the real world, is perhaps significant because serving in the army and going to war is not going to happen. Consequently, her views are not going to be colored by questions of courage in terms of going to war herself. I also find it interesting that this play understands the horrors of war given that it was the horrors of World War I that generally killed the romantic notion of war in Britain.

By A Customer This play particularly wins you over if you see it performed live with a particularly acerbic, not too tall Bluntschli--it is a romantic farce that critiques Romanticism (but ends up in love with it, although in a roundabout way) and embraces early 20th c Realism and Capitalism, all through some fairly simple but very captivating characters. Good social sendup, a Shaw for people who still have soft hearts and want a quick read.

Like the chocolate cream soldier - tasty and satisfying By Bonnie A starving, exhausted soldier running for his life bursts into a young woman's room, finds outrage, criticism, solace, chocolate creams, and unexpected love -and that's just the opening scene. This clever, witty, subtle, and surprising treat from the author of Pygmalion still holds up well more than 100 years after its writing. Shaw fashions the subjects of false ideals, heroism, romanticism, and the fake glories of war into a well-constructed farce which sustains through the very last line. Can't wait to see a new production of the play, and a great read meanwhile....

RONAN'S WELL produces many hits, SAINT RONAN'S WELL very few. END NOTE.Sir Walter Scott wrote a famous Introduction to his 1823 novel SAINT RONAN'S WELL. In it he describes the novel as "light literature." It follows "a plan different from any other that the Author has ever written."What is so different? SAINT RONAN'S WELL is not historical in the way IVANHOE, QUENTIN DURWARD and even WAVERLEY are. These are historical in that Scott, father of the historical novel genre, had to rely entirely on reading and research for the romances farthest back in time, while for the more recent settings prior to SAINT RONAN'S WELL he could flesh out printed records with boyhood recollections of tales told him by very old men who had been active in the "risings" of 1715 and 1745.SAINT RONAN'S WELL, by contrast, is set in Scott's own lifetime and draws on his own experiences at many country inns in Scotland and at some spas built around healing waters. The novel is set in Sir Walter's own mid-life time and is almost entirely detached from the great events of England's struggle with Napoleon.The Wizard of the North clearly found it a relief not to have to portray accurately in a work of fiction greats of history such as Mary Queen of Scots, Saladin, Richard the Lion Heart and Bonnie Prince Charlie. In other words the second marriage was bigamous and its offspring illegitimate.Trouble is that the second son inherited his father's title. As life ended, the father regretted his deception and sent the first son, Francis (Frank) Tyrrel, proof of his legitmacy. Both Frank and half-brother, Valentine Bulmer, Lord Etherington, arrive in the vicinity of Saint Ronan's village, spa and waters with their eyes out for nubile (or is she?) Miss Clara Mowbray, the ward of her impoverished noble, hothead brother John.Does one brother get the girl? Does the Earl keep his title? The tale is avoidably tragic and I will reveal no spoilers. There are many comic characters and interludes, an absent-minded, vastly learned but kindly Presbyterian minister, a domestic spy close to Lord Etherington, a canny, unforgettable innkeeper, Meg Dods, and a cast of silly men and women who frequent the new hotel associated with the healing waters.Keep your eye on Mr Touchwood, an immensely wealthy nabob who had once met and befriended Frank Tyrrel in Smyrna (Turkey). Like The Bride of Lammermoor, in the end of this book Scott tends toward the melodramatic, which I'm not a fan of.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Mystery By drkhimxz A vintage work by the prolific Carolyn Wells, this is a quite readable puzzler. It is an example of what I would call, non-violent murder mysteries, such as written by Agatha Christie, Essentially what we get is an early build-up, the murder, and the rest is a matter of Who Dun It and Where is the leading Suspect. The language and sentiments are sometimes what some would term dated, but I did not have any problem about that. There are a number of well-drawn characters and a super-sleuth (with a youthful protege, who makes major contributions to the investigation). While crucial to the solution, the super-sleuth plays a surprisingly small part in the book. The writing is clear, the plot line tricky but not complicated, the momentum nicely maintained. I would commend this to youthful readers who are not put off by the age of the book and to most adults who take to the "cozy" sub-genre.

But there's no real mystery here, and the characters are cardboard. And as usual in the Stone mysteries, the "lower class" Fibsy does most of the sleuthing, but is treated as a mere underling.

Whether you want to increase your bank account, improve any area of your business, create better relationships, or simply build and generate a better life, in whatever area, May McCarthy shows you how to do it, in this easy-to-follow seven step process. The process works! I have seen it manifest in the lives of others and in my own life as well. This is an easy-read, following tried and true principles that have been packaged in a unique way which most anyone can reproduce. As always, this is not magic. You have to do the work. But with the process outlined the way it is, and if you do the practice, your amazing life will be even more productive and positive.Go get what you want now, and as May says, I'll see you on your path to wealth.

I was quite impressed as to how such a successful lady wants to share her secrets to a life of abundance. I have placed into action her suggestions and it not only has worked for me but how fast it has provided me such positive changes in my life. I don't own a business however I have used her "secrets" to find a better job, a new home, etc. I definitively encourage others not only to purchase this book but put into actions its teachings to acquire a better fruitful life.Fabio Vasquez, MD

He coedited with John Clute The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (Orbit/St Martin’s) and wrote in their entirety all three editions of The Encyclopedia of Walt Disney’s Animated Characters (Hyperion); both encyclopedias are standard reference works in their field. His A Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Film Noir: The Definitive Reference Guide, published by Limelight in Fall 2013, has the distinction of being the largest film noir encyclopedia ever written. Among his other recently published nonfiction books are the highly successful Discarded Science,Corrupted Science, and Bogus Science (all AAPPL/Sterling). He lives in NJ.

The subtitle says it all: The Debunking of Pseudoscience By Cm Dfms Brown This is the latest in a series of popular science books by this erudite but accessible author. I have enjoyed many of his previous books and this one keeps up the standards set in Discarded Science, Corrupted Science and so on. We need authors like Grant to remind us that rushing to embrace "proof" of the inexplicable is often the lazy way out ... His books remind us of the need to remain sceptical.

Hilarious deunking of the "Paranormal" By John Grove An excellent, informative and hilarious book debunking the complete idiocy of those who defend the in-defensible. Shows you the tricks of the charlatans, the unfalsifiable nature of these beliefs and why science rejects them.A short excellent read.

She has overcome some major challenges in her life - lymphoma (twice), a divorce, the economic downturn that resulted in the elimination of funding for SerPaz training in schools, and the death of her father - and has used these boulders of despair to solidify her concept of The Connection Practice methodology she so very successful introduced and used for more than 40,000 school children in Costa Rica (as SerPaz) and now it's used by individuals, schools, organizations and businesses in the United States.In COMPLETELY CONNECTED Rita shares the Connection Practice, `a method of social-emotional learning that unites empathy and insight and achieves extraordinary results. Empathy is attained through a conscious connection to feelings and needs, and insight is accessed through heart-brain coherence. Everyone Wins with the Connection Practice By cathyholt I really love how Rita Marie gives so many examples of people of all ages, nationalities, and walks of life who have embraced and benefited from the Connection Practice...from the little Costa Rican boy whose aggressive behavior went away as soon as he had the heart insight "You need more sleep," to the father and son who were finally able to forgive each other, to a 12-stepper realizing "I got the skill set that transformed me from codependent behavior to unconditional love and acceptance." Rita Marie shares with the reader how she used the practices to get her through some very rough spots, such as having lymphoma, and losing funding for her school program. Her book is full of nuggets of wisdom, such as "Instead of criticizing and shaming bullies, it's far more transformative to teach them how to connect to themselves and others." I recommend this book to teachers, parents, CEOs, and anyone seeking to communicate more empathically with themselves and others.

By mountain girl There are pages of acknowledgements and reviews at the beginning of the book. There is a lot of background praising the system without much explaining of what it is. Maybe if you are familiar with this system, it makes sense but for me it feels like another language is being spoken and we haven’t been taught the basics.The actual information presented in the book could be condensed down to a few pages. The chapter summaries are all that are needed. It reads like a research paper, combining studies and details of other peoples’ work without a clear interpretation. This is the type of book I normally like to read, but I struggled to get through it. There just wasn’t a lot of substance. It all just feels like a big advertisement for the classes and products. A revision has been done, to make it easier to read on Kindle Touch and laptop. Some of the charts and diagrams are still running off the page or too small to read but there aren't too many of these.

The widowed Criseyde is a powerful woman, complex and intelligent, and the naïve Troilus is ambushed by his overwhelming love for her; Pandarus, Troilus’s friend and the enabler of the couple’s love, provides comic relief. Chaucer used his familiarity with the works of Giovanni Boccaccio and Benoît de Sainte-Maure to build his own historical world, depicting pagan beliefs and myths with sympathy and imagination.

This edition is based on the Corpus Christi College Cambridge manuscript of Troilus and Criseyde; the manuscript text is conservatively edited and the original Middle English text is used. Difficult words are conveniently glossed in the margins, and explanatory footnotes help with references and allusions.

Red Amazon seems to be including all the reviews of different editions and translations of Chaucer's "Troilus and Criseyde" on the same page. If you read the reviews here you will be very confused. Some refer to an original language edition (either the one made by R. A. Shoaf or Stephen Barney's Norton Critical edition), and some refer to a translation, at least one to the translation done by Nevill Coghill. The reader needs to pay careful attention to what edition is actually on the screen when making a selection.If you want to read the original text, I would recommend Stephen Barney's edition. Barney is the editor who made the critical edition for the Riverside Chaucer, and his Norton Critical edition includes ten excellent critical essays in addition to Chaucer's poem, Giovanni Boccaccio's "Il Filostrato" (Chaucer's source), and Robert Henryson's "Testament of Crisseid." Shoaf's edition is also good, but twice as expensive, and it does not have as much contextual material. Coghill is a fine translator of Chaucer, and for the reader who does not want to tackle the Middle English he will provide an adequate experience. But beware: His smooth couplets sound more like Alexander Pope than the vigorous medieval writer he is translating.

ISBN: 0140442391 (pbk.)Nevill Coghill's brilliant modern English translation of Chaucer's 'The Canterbury Tales' has always been a bestseller and it's easy to understand why. Chaucer was an intensely human writer and a great comic artist, but besides the ribaldry and sheer good fun of 'The Canterbury Tales,' we also know he was capable of other things. His range was wide, and the striking thing about Coghill's translations are how amazingly faithful they are to the spirit of the originals - at times bawdy and hilariously funny, at other times more serious and moving when Chaucer shifts to a more poignant mode as in 'Troilus and Criseyde.'But despite the brilliance of Coghill's translations, and despite the fact that they remain the best possible introduction to Chaucer for those who don't know Middle English, those who restrict themselves to Coghill are going to miss a lot - such readers are certainly going to get the stories, but they're going to lose much of the beauty those stories have in the original language. The difference is as great as that between a black-and-white movie and technicolor.Chaucer's Middle English _looks_ difficult to many, and I think I know why. It _looks_ difficult because that in fact is what people are doing, they are _looking_ at it, they are reading silently and trying to take it in through the eye. This is a recipe for instant frustration and failure. But fortunately there is a quick and easy remedy.So much of Chaucer's power is in the sheer music of his lines, and in their energy and thrust. He was writing when English was at its most masculine and vigorous. And his writings were intended, as was the common practice in the Middle Ages when silent reading was considered a freakish phenomenon, to be read aloud. Those new to Chaucer would therefore be well advised, after reading and enjoying Nevill Coghill's renderings, to learn how to read Middle English _aloud_ as soon as possible by listening to one of the many excellent recordings.Coghill certainly captures the spirit of Chaucer, but modern English cannot really convey the full flavor and intensity of the original. Learn how to roll a few of Chaucer's Middle English lines around on your tongue and you'll soon hear what I mean. You'll also find that it isn't nearly so difficult as it _looks_, and your pleasure in Chaucer will be magnified enormously.

The most unsung, but perhaps the most modern, of Shakespeare By darragh o'donoghue One of his lesser known works, Shakespeare's Trojan play is also one of his most intriguing. Not quite a burlesque, 'Troilus and Cressida''s lurches in tone, from farce to historical drama to romance to tragedy, and its blurring of these modes, explains why generations of critics and audiences have found it so unsatisfying, and why today it can seem so modern. Its disenchanted tone, its interest in the baser human instincts underlying (classical) heroism look forward to such 20th century works as Giraudoux's 'The Trojan War Will Not Take Place' or Terry Jones' 'Chaucer's Knight'; the aristocratic ideals of Love and War, inextricably linked in this play, are debased by the merchant-class language of exchange, trade, food, possesion - the passionate affair at its centre is organised by the man who gave his name to pimps, Pandarus, and is more concerned with immediate sexual gratification than anything transcendental. The Siege of Troy sequences are full of the elaborately formal rhetoric we expect from Shakespeare's history plays, but well-wrought diplomacy masks ignoble trickery; the great heroes Ajax and Achilles are petulant egotists, the latter preferring the company of his catamite to combat; the actual war sequences, when they finally come, are a breathless farce of exits and entrances. There are a lot of words in this play, but very few deeds.Paris, Prince of Troy, has abducted Helen, wife of Menelaus, King of Sparta. Led by the latter's brother Agamemnon, and his Machiavellian advisors Ulysses and Nestor, the Greeks besiege Troy, demanding the return of Helen. However, Achilles' dissatisfaction at the generals' endless politicking has spread discontent in the ranks. Within Troy, war takes a distinct second place to matters of the heart. While Paris wallows in luxury with his prize, his youngest brother Troilus uses Pandarus as a go-between to arrange a night of love with his niece, Cressida. When one of the Trojan leaders is taken prisoner by the Greeks, the ransom price is Cressida.There is only one character in 'Troilus' who can be said to be at all noble and not self-interested, the eldest Trojan prince Hector, who, despite his odd interpreation of the quality 'honour', detests a meaningless war, and tries to spare as many of his enemies' lives as he can. He is clearly an anachronism, however, and his ignoble slaughter at the hands of a brutal gang suggests what price chivalry. Perhaps the most recognisable character is Thirsitis, the most savagely cynical of his great Fools. Imagine Falstaff without the redeeming lovability - he divests heroes and events of their false values, satirises motivations, abuses his dim-witted 'betters' and tries to preserve his life at any cost. Written in between 'Hamlet' and 'All's Well That Ends Well', 'Troilus' bears all the marks of Shakespeare's mid-period: the contrapuntal structure, the dense figures, the audacious neologisms, and the intitially deferred, accelerated action. If some of the diplomacy scenes are too efective in their parodic pastiche of classical rhetoric, and slow things down, Act 5 is an amazing dramatic rush, crowning the play's disenchantment with love (with an extraordinarily creepy three-way spaying of an infidelity) and war.The New Penguin Shakespeare is the most accessible and user-friendly edition for students and the general reader (although it does need updating). Unlike the Oxford or Arden series, which offer unwieldy introductions (yawning with irrelevant conjecture about dates and sources) and unusable notes (clotted with tedious pedantry more concerned with fighting previous commentators than elucidating Shakespeare), the Penguin's format offers a clear Introduction dealing with the play and its contexts, an appendix 'An Account of the Text', and functional endnotes that gloss unfamiliar words and difficult passages. The Introduction is untainted by fashions in Critical Theory, but is particularly good at explaining the role of Time ('When time is old and hath forgot itself...And blind oblivion swallowed cities up'), the shifting structure, the multiple viewpoints in presenting characters, and Shakespeare's use of different literary and linguistic registers.

Roach Being of Tyrolean descent and also an amateur genealogist, I found this book to be an enlightening history of my ancestral home. Written over 100 years ago, the language is somewhat old fashion. However this little volume offers historical information of the ancient region called Tyrol that few modern descendants are aware of. It was very helpful in my personal research to find my roots.

I read some of the books in this series as a kid fifty years ago. What a thrill to find the series, and other books by Altsheller on Amazon, for free, and reading the stories again on a Kindle. Excellent series. Now for the Civil War series.

Venezia This is one of the most informative books I've read on the subject of marketing, and it is a crucial read for the entrepreneurial businesswoman just starting out. It easily broke down the subject into easy to understand sections, showing you just how important making connections, building your personal network, and using it to its potential to really liven up your small business.I would recommend this to anyone, because it definitely helped me out.

By Simon Richards As a freelancer working from home, this book has helped me to greatly improve whatever qualities I already had in place, and gain perspective on how to acquire new ones, especially when working with other people. Networking is called the future of collaborative projects by some people and I can't agree more. Some tips here, if not directly, then indirectly helped me put on a different attitude and approach with my cover letters as well. And guess what? I land more projects now :).This book offers some great tips and advices on how to become a smarter business opportunist and take advantage of a situation and generate profits from it, not just for yourself, but many other people too, in a chain reaction. It also gives people ideas to try something they never tried before in order to potentially find something else they're good at. With the proper use of the tools and tips in this book, you can turn that into a business of your own, like so many other people, quoted with their testimonials of success inside this book. Highly recommended!

I thought this book might do me some good as I'm not the most "people-person" in my department By JW I thought this book might do me some good as I'm not the most "people-person" in my department. Truth be told, I'm the biggest introvert I know, which means I stress OUT over customer service. Work projects, I'm good. I don't even like talking on the phone to friends and family. That's why text messaging was invented, right?While my full-time job isn't network marketing per se, the way I see it, everything is a marketing network. Friends, family, the vet, etc.Thus, as an effort to better myself, I thought this might be worthwhile. It was better than I anticipated as I read several things that I thought could help me both with customer service and with work in general. I'd call that a "win win" for every one. Obviously, this book does not help my love of bad jokes and puns. ;)As far as business books go, this is by far one of the most enjoyable ones I've read. It didn't put me to sleep, unlike the accounting book I'm still trying to finish. It offered valid points but didn't drive them to death, dragging out the chapters. There were good real-life experiences told, which was a nice touch. There wasn't a single real-life story that made me roll my eyes, which is what I tend to come across in business books.
