0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A good spy mystery and romance By Bonnie Lo Following the tale of an intrigue from the point of a diplomatic official, Gerald Ingram, in the golden age of royalty where beginnings of intelligence services were found. This official attached to the British embassy in Paris has his hands full - he's trying to figure out how secret diplomatic messages are being intercepted when only two people - the foreign minister and the ambassador who he reports to - know the cipher. An old enemy appears on the scene, suspicious and under a different name. Finally, although he is engaged to a lovely woman back in England, he tries to figure out his own heart when surprised by the arrival and presence of his first love in Paris. On top of that, this first love is clouded by suspicious by friends and allies who accuse her of being a spy against his interests.William Le Queux is a good storyteller, and the state of this genre in the last 1800's leading up to the first world war should be considered when evaluating the flow of the story, but it is otherwise worth the time to read.
