"[...] In the small hours of a bitter January morning I sat in my room gazing into the fire, and thinking over many things. I was alone in the house, except for the servants, but this circumstance did not affect me. My childhood and upbringing had been of no ordinary nature, and I was used to looking after myself and depending on my own resources for amusement and occupation. My mother had died when I was yet a small child and, with my elder sister and brother, I had grown up under our father's eye. He was a chemist and a man of advanced ideas on most things. He had never sent us to school, preferring to watch in person over our education, procuring for us private tuition in many subjects, and himself instructing us in physical science and history, his two favourite studies. We rapidly gained knowledge under his system and were decidedly precocious children, but we had none of the ordinary school society and routine. Our childhood was by no means dull or mopish, for there were three of us [...]".

This book fictionalizes the experiences of a pair of sisters who lived in London during the heyday of anarchism at the end of the 19th Century. These sisters wrote under the pseudonym, Isabel Meredith. The book breezily follows many quirky characters who comprised the radical scene of the time, endlessly scheming and intriguing. The book is mildly humorous, as you see the mix of sincere revolutionaries, haughty poseurs, and dour ragamuffins intermingling with one another and getting on each others' nerves. I found that amusing, and still true today! But the book ultimately disappoints, as the protagonist, having dipped her toes into radical waters, ultimately repudiates the ideas -- you can almost see her looking down her nose at her former comrades, shaking her head wistfully.Still, it does provide the reader an entertaining look at a woefully under- and misrepresented period of history from someone who was definitely in the midst of it. I wish more people at the time had written fiction about this period.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. compulsory reading By theBeNcHpReSs This was another book that I stumbled upon by accident and enjoyed immensely. I find it astonishing that I didn't come across the book previously and I guess I have the internet to thank for exposing me to another great (and free) novel. The protagonist here is Isabel Meredith, a young Londoner living in the late nineteenth century. She comes from a wealthy and talented family, but after the death of both her parents, she turns to radical politics, and discovers that anarchism is the closest thing to her heart. As soon as the possibility arises she teams up with some truly eccentric anarchists and they take over the publication of a struggling anarchist paper. The narrator spends a great deal of time describing the people around her. In fact, character descriptions take up most of the novel. Stylistically it reminded me somewhat of Charles Dickens, but perhaps that's only because I'm a bit out of touch with more comparable English writers. To put it simply - the prose is really great. What touched me most about this was how little has apparently changed in 120 years of anarchism. Idealistic anarchists living with the poor and deranged. The talented exploited by the unscrupulous. Damaged anarchists putting their associates at risk. One thing that has changed however is that a modern european anarchist would probably not resort to eating a stewed tom cat (well probably not). After reading the book, I was inspired to do a bit of research on the author. Isabel Meredith was apparently the pseudonym of two sisters, Helen and Olivia Agresti. Incredibly Olivia in her later years moved to Italy and became a supporter of Mussolini (according to wikipedia). Learning this was somewhat disappointing to me, but it seems wrong to judge a book by the behaviour of the author. I'm still rating this with five stars.

"[...]she had never yet bestowed on a mortal. On this particular day her father, the vicar of a parish on the sea-swept outskirts of Lower Wessex, and a widower, was suffering from an attack of gout. After finishing her household supervisions Elfride became restless, and several times left the room, ascended the staircase, and knocked at her father's chamber-door. 'Come in!' was always answered in a hearty out-of-door voice from the inside. 'Papa,' she said on one occasion to the fine, red-faced, handsome man of forty, who, puffing and fizzing like a bursting bottle, lay on the bed wrapped in a dressing-gown, and every now and then enunciating, in spite of himself, about one letter of some word or words that were almost oaths; 'papa, will you not come downstairs this evening?' She spoke distinctly: he was rather deaf. 'Afraid not—eh-hh!—very much afraid I shall not, Elfride. Piph-ph-ph! I can't bear even a handkerchief upon this deuced toe of mine, much less a stocking or slipper—piph-ph-ph! There 'tis again! No, I shan't get up till to-morrow.' 'Then I hope this London man won't come; for I don't know what I should do, papa.'[...]".

A Pair of Blue Eyes, by Thomas Hardy

Review `What a joy it is to find World's Classics according to `new edition' status to that gentle romantic tale, A Pair of Blue Eyes, our enjoyment of which is enhanced by the editing and fine general and textual introductions by Alan Manford, whose knowledge and enthusiasm conspire to urge a revaluation of a novel which deserves a much wider readership.' --Thomas Hardy Annual. No 5`A Pair Of Blue Eyes has a vivacity that makes the Great Works appear the lumbering heavy-weights they are.' --Andrew Cowan, The Sunday Times

About the Author Thomas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840. In his writing, he immortalized the site of his birth—Egdon Heath, in Dorset, near Dorchester. Delicate as a child, he was taught at home by his mother before he attended grammar school. At sixteen, Hardy was apprenticed to an architect, and for many years, architecture was his profession; in his spare time, he pursued his first and last literary love, poetry. Finally convinced that he could earn his living as an author, he retired from architecture, married, and devoted himself to writing. An extremely productive novelist, Hardy published an important book every year or two. In 1896, disturbed by the public outcry over the unconventional subjects of his two greatest novels—Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure—he announced that he was giving up fiction and afterward produced only poetry. In later years, he received many honors. He died on January 11, 1928, and was buried in Poet’s Corner, in Westminster Abbey. It was as a poet that he wished to be remembered, but today critics regard his novels as his most memorable contribution to English literature for their psychological insight, decisive delineation of character, and profound presentation of tragedy.

"[...]something red Indian about the firm mouth and strongly marked cheek bones, showed even at that distance traces of the friction of the passing years. And yet she was very handsome. Her features were as firm in repose as those of a Greek bust, and her great dark eyes were arched over by two brows so black, so thick, and so delicately curved, that the eye turned away from the harsher details of the face to marvel at their grace and strength. Her figure, too, was straight as a dart, a little portly, perhaps, but curving into magnificent outlines, which were half accentuated by the strange costume which she wore. Her hair, black but plentifully shot with grey, was brushed plainly back from her high forehead, and was gathered under a small round felt hat, like that of a man, with one sprig of feather in the band as a concession to her sex. A double-breasted jacket of some dark frieze-like material fitted closely to her figure, while her straight blue skirt, untrimmed and ungathered, was cut so short that the lower curve of her finely-turned legs was plainly visible beneath it, terminating in a pair of broad, flat, low-heeled and square-toed shoes. Such was the lady who lounged at the gate of number three, under the curious eyes of her two opposite neighbors. But if her conduct and appearance had already somewhat jarred upon their limited and precise sense of the fitness of things, what were they to think of the[...]".

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Amusing but not groundbreaking By C. Ebeling This 1893 novella from the creator of Sherlock Holmes is a reminder that Arthur Conan Doyle was a productive writer across many decades, who worked in genres other than detective fiction. This is a lightweight social comedy, easily read in a couple of hours. It really does not have quite enough going for it to attain classic status--Diary of a Nobody by the Grossmith brothers runs circles around it in wit, invention, style and what it divulges about Late Victorian middle class suburban society. This is the story of four families that live in a new subdivision of the McMansion counterpart of suburban London in the 1890s. There are the elderly spinster sisters, stalwarts of Victorian manners, out of whose family land the subdivision was created; a widower doctor and his two marriageable daughters; a recently retired naval admiral, his wife and adult son; and another young man and his aunt, an attractive woman of a certain age, who stridently advocates suffrage, who is an adventurer and popular lecturer. There ensues some couplings--the daughters and the son and nephew and the doctor and the aunt, but then there are the necessary complications to true love. Two of the three couplings will survive, but all end up happy. The sisters provide amusing perspective of the goings on. Masterpiece Classic could take this and with the right cast and stylish approach make a winsome production. This edition is print on demand. The cover is thick, glossy photo stock, the back cover has a minimal description, and the interior is laid out competently (not all PODs are, believe me) but is minimal, with no critical introduction to put this in context.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Classically Boring By CC Thomas One thing I love about my Kindle and rise of the e-books is that so many classics are free. Otherwise, I never would have bought this book. Actually, I never even heard of it. The freeness made it very appealing. It is about a suburb of London where three families converge. The three have a variety of problems that only seem to happen in Victorian England--bad brother who scams family members for money and then does a physical attack for revenge, the 'new' game of tennis, the launch of women's rights, and other issues that is so "England".It was a cute and short story but not one I would ever want to pay for! If you're reading the classics, stick with other English authors and if you want Doyle, then stick with his Holmes stories. Cute, but that's about it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not Doyle's Best Work By Grampy As a rule, I tend to like everything I've ever read of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's writings. I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, but a lot of what Doyle wrote was superior to the Sherlock stories. Beyond the City was okay - I did like it, but it wasn't one of his better pieces.

Water gives them shape, and makes and carries their food. The drop in my drink has been inside the first plants that lived in the sea, and the first plants that lived on dry land. Some animals moved out of the water to creep over the land around 390 million years ago. The first were worm-like, and wore their skeletons on the outside. Later, animals with backbones, four legs and wet skins began clambering over the land. All the animals had to develop new ways of breathing and moving on land. But wherever they were, they had to find supplies of water to stay alive.Salty swamps and stinking bogs bordered the edges of a shallow inland sea 75 million years ago. The sun shone hot. Not much rain fell. But slow-moving, weed-covered streams fed into the swamps, and here hadrosaurs lived, drinking the fresh water.Water is the major part of every living thing on Earth. The drop in my drink has been inside millions of living things.

After reading The Drop in My Drink, neither you nor your children will question where your water comes from, or why it is important to know. With water quality and availability named as the number one problem of the new millenium, this exquisitely illustrated book is a must read for both children and adults. Author's Note, August 29, 2015: I welcome all reviews of this book. The August 26, 2015 reviewer is correct in that there are some typos and at least one misuse of speech in this first edition and they will be corrected if there is enough interest for me to publish a corrected and expanded second edition. The reviewer suggests you read Mr. Greene's book instead, and while his books are excellent, I view his voice and message as distinctly different than mine. Furthermore, the reviewer admits he did not take the time to fully read my book, which would've only taken him about an hour to do, but still feels he can appropriately label it as "paranoia" with "the author... constantly looking over his shoulder, watching for the boogeyman." Emulating Mr. Greene's poetic and heightened writing style, he states "Where this book is flawed and reeks of amateur, Greene's book is slick and authoritative." I don't think my book is for everyone, because not everyone is willing to honestly evaluate how the self interest of others can, at times, collide with their own self interest. If you want a book with no grammatical errors, that is politically correct, and will not challenge your thinking in any way, then this book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you find the subject matter interesting based on the description below and are open minded enough to have your views challenged, then give this book a try. At present I have lowered the price from $2.99 USD to 99 cents in hopes of generating more interest in the book, and hopefully more balanced reviews. If you know anything about Amazon sales rank and pricing, then you know that very little revenue has been generated from this book. I didn't write and publish this for the money. I did it to challenge you. I humbly invite you to take this journey with me. You've got nothing to lose. Sincerely, Mark B. Warring This book is not a joke. Psychological warfare is happening all around you regardless of whether you admit or not. Why continue to be an unknowing victim? Why continue to hopelessly wish that the world becomes fair? Why not understand the methods others are using against you so that you can know what your options are to defend yourself? You can be a good person with a strong sense of self while engaging in psychological warfare. And you don't have to lose your mind in the process. This brief book of approximately 10,000 words is about the way the world really works and what you can do about it. It is not a book about being nice to people and actively listening to them. Those books have their place, and I'm not necessarily knocking them, but this book won't waste your time with politically correct tactics that you're already smart, studied, and savvy enough to know about. This is a book about confronting your private thoughts about inevitable conflicts. Some of this book may completely shock you and cause you to confront reality for what it truly is. Think of this book as Lao Tzu meeting Sun Tzu meeting Machiavelli meeting Napoleon Hill and formulating a practical treatise for our time. No matter how little or how much money or power you have, you'll be attacked and exploited. But in the wake of conflict and stress, you can be happy and self expressed, as this is ultimately a book about enjoying life's highest victories. Please join me on this journey. Buy this book now and start reading it. I don't think you'll regret it.

Red Notice by Bill Browder | A 15-minute Summary & Analysis

Preview:

Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man’s Fight for Justice by Bill Browder is a unique story that blends biography, entrepreneurial business narrative, history, true crime, and a human rights crusade all into one book.

Browder’s grandfather was the leader of the American Communist Party. For Browder, going to business school and trying to be a capitalist was a good way to rebel against his liberal parents. After earning his master’s of business administration (MBA), however, the standard post business school paths failed to inspire him. His grandfather had spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe and made a name for himself there. Young Browder thought if his grandfather could find fame and distinction there, so could he.

Lucky for Browder, he graduated in 1989, the same year the Berlin Wall came down, leading to the end of the Cold War…

"[...] Coleridge used to say that he had seldom known or heard of any great man who had not much of the woman in him. Even so the large intellect of Daniel Webster seemed to be coupled with all softer feelings; and his countenance and bearing, at the very first, impressed me with this. A commanding brow, thoughtful eyes, and a mouth that seemed to respond to all humanities. He deserves his fame, I am sure.--John Kenyon. He is a magnificent specimen. "[...]to a group of young poets and painters of advanced ideas and mediocre ability. She has her own fortune and lives her own life. For some reason, she wishes to remain Mrs. James Burden. As for Jim, no disappointments have been severe enough to chill his naturally romantic and ardent disposition. This disposition, though it often made him seem very funny when he was a boy, has been one of the strongest elements in his success. He loves with a personal passion the great country through which his railway runs and branches. His faith in it and his knowledge of it have played an important part in its development. He is always able to raise capital for new enterprises in Wyoming or Montana, and has helped young men out there to do remarkable things in mines and timber and oil. If a young man with an idea can once get Jim Burden's attention, can manage to accompany him when he goes off into the wilds hunting for lost parks or exploring new canyons, then the money which means action is usually forthcoming. Jim is still able to lose himself in those big Western dreams. Though he is over forty now, he meets new people and new enterprises with the impulsiveness by which his boyhood friends remember him. He never seems to me to grow older. His fresh color and sandy hair and [...]".

My Antonia, by Willa Cather

Amazon.com Review It seems almost sacrilege to infringe upon a book as soulful and rich as Willa Cather's My Ántonia by offering comment. First published in 1918, and set in Nebraska in the late 19th century, this tale of the spirited daughter of a Bohemian immigrant family planning to farm on the untamed land ("not a country at all but the material out of which countries are made") comes to us through the romantic eyes of Jim Burden. He is, at the time of their meeting, newly orphaned and arriving at his grandparents' neighboring farm on the same night her family strikes out to make good in their new country. Jim chooses the opening words of his recollections deliberately: "I first heard of Ántonia on what seemed to be an interminable journey across the great midland plain of North America," and it seems almost certain that readers of Cather's masterpiece will just as easily pinpoint the first time they heard of Ántonia and her world. It seems equally certain that they, too, will remember that moment as one of great light in an otherwise unremarkable trip through the world.

Ántonia, who, even as a grown woman somewhat downtrodden by circumstance and hard work, "had not lost the fire of life," lies at the center of almost every human condition that Cather's novel effortlessly untangles. She represents immigrant struggles with a foreign land and tongue, the restraints on women of the time (with which Cather was very much concerned), the more general desires for love, family, and companionship, and the great capacity for forbearance that marked the earliest settlers on the frontier.

As if all this humanity weren't enough, Cather paints her descriptions of the vastness of nature--the high, red grass, the road that "ran about like a wild thing," the endless wind on the plains--with strokes so vivid as to make us feel in our bones that we've just come in from a walk on that very terrain ourselves. As the story progresses, Jim goes off to the University in Lincoln to study Latin (later moving on to Harvard and eventually staying put on the East Coast in another neat encompassing of a stage in America's development) and learns Virgil's phrase "Optima dies ... prima fugit" that Cather uses as the novel's epigraph. "The best days are the first to flee"--this could be said equally of childhood and the earliest hours of this country in which the open land, much like My Ántonia, was nothing short of a rhapsody in prairie sky blue. --Melanie Rehak

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up--In Jim Burden's accounting of his life with, and without, Antonia Shimerda, listeners are transported to the hardscrabble Nebraska prairie and the rural immigrant experience. When Jim first sees the Shimerda family, immigrants from Bohemia, disembarking from the same train that is taking him West to live with his grandparents, he has no idea the impact they will have on his life. Nostalgically, he remembers the good and bad times they had on their respective farms and creates his portrait of Antonia, an independent and tough survivor. The brief biography of author Willa Cather at the beginning of the CD explains how her life mirrors Antonia's life in many ways, helping listeners understand the context of the story. Patrick Lawlor's rich, fluid voice lends an air of sophistication to Burden, reinforcing the class structure inherent at the beginning of the 20th century. Lawlor's attempts to create voices for the characters often falls flat. Since the novel is Burden's reminiscence, it would have been better told in Burden's voice alone. Since My Antonia continues to be a staple in many English curriculums, this is a good audiobook for schools and public libraries to have available.--Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. 181 of 193 people found the following review helpful. Some memories are realities By D. Cloyce Smith When Willa Cather was writing "My Antonia," she visited her friend, the journalist and war correspondent Elizabeth Sergeant, grabbed an old apothecary jar filled with flowers, set it in the center of an antique table, and explained: "I want my new heroine to be like this--like a rare object in the middle of a table, which one may examine from all sides. . . . I want her to stand out--like this--like this--because she is the story."This anecdote (recounted in James Woodress's biography of Cather) sums up almost exactly the technique that makes her novel both unique and unusual. Instead of writing the story from her heroine's point of view, or from the point of view of an omniscient narrator, Cather instead creates a bystander, the likeable and somewhat innocent Jim Burden, who has written down a series of memories where his and Antonia's lives intersect; "My Antonia" is a biography through the mask of autobiography. While this is Jim's story as much as it is Antonia's (she is barely mentioned at all in Book III), we are ultimately studying a much-loved thing of beauty from "all sides"--from the distance separating it and the observer.Although "My Antonia" relates a number of exciting, sentimental, horrifying, and even scandalous incidents (none of which will be divulged here), Cather very deliberately chose to write a character novel rather than an action story. Many of the book's pivotal "events" happen offstage; we learn what has happened only when Jim hears about Antonia or runs into her at a gathering or stops by her home. Such a detached approach is a departure from that used by many of the American naturalists (e.g., Dreiser, Lewis) writing during this period, yet her book is surely a model of realism. As Jim writes when he notes his reluctance to visit Antonia when they are both grown, "Some memories are realities, and are better than anything that can ever happen to one again."As with all of Cather's novels, the prairie town of Black Hawk (which, is of course, Cather's hometown of Red Cloud), is populated with a variety of hirelings and homesteaders, dreamers and pretenders, romantics and scoundrels. (Cather seldom sketched a character as downright wicked as the would-be rapist Wick Cutter.) But none of the townsfolk outshine either the affectionate, if platonic, rapport between Jim and Antonia or the unforgettable portrayal of Antonia herself.

95 of 101 people found the following review helpful. A moving portrait of our nation's roots and the open plains By Chad M. Brick When I went to write the review of Cather's work, I was surprised to find that most of the reviews were written by high school students who were required to read the book. The strengths of "My Antonia", in my opinion, would not be obvious to most teenagers. Taken at face value, as a fictional story of the struggles of Bohemian immigrants to the mid-west, the story has merits which probably underlie its popularity among secondary teachers. However, that is not what makes this book special. Simply put, both the characters and setting of this novel are beautiful. Cather clearly loved the land she was writing about, and her passion for the farm country of her youth flowed through her writings. Her narrator, Jim, reveals the life of the immigrant Antonia, his childhood friend. Though most of the book is about their childhood together, it is written from Jim's view as an adult. This is tremendously important, as Jim's observations are clearly bear a mark of maturity that would be out-of-place if the book were written from the point-of-view of a child. Perhaps this is what many teenagers miss. Few of them have experienced the profound bittersweet feelings adults have when looking back upon their youth. These emotions were entwined through the novel from beginning to end, forming a scaffold upon which the story was told. To miss them is to miss everything that makes this novel great, rather than just historical fiction.

By Jana L.Perskie In 1882, when author Willa Cather was nine years-old, her family left their home in Back Creek Valley, Virginia, and moved to Nebraska, near the settler country in Red Cloud where they farmed a homestead. Ms. Cather, often thought of as a chronicler of the pioneer American West, frequently drew on her memories of prairie culture and her own personal experiences. She wrote about the themes closest to her heart. Of primary importance was the drama of the immigrant struggling to survive in a new world, epitomized here in "My Antonia." In this extraordinary novel, Miss Cather weaves together the story of Antonia Shimerda, an immigrant girl from Bohemia who represents the optimism, determination and pure grit that newcomers to America needed to make a successful life, and that of American-born Jim Burden, our narrator.Burden, a successful and cultured East-coast lawyer, is returning to his childhood home in Blackhawk, Nebraska for a visit. On the long train ride, he reminisces with an unnamed friend about the place where they had both grown up and about the people they knew - especially their dear friend Antonia, "who seemed to mean to us the country, the conditions, the whole adventure of our childhood."When young Jim Burden was orphaned at age ten, he left his native Virginia to live with his grandparents on their farm, just outside of Blackhawk. At almost the same time that Jim arrived, the Shimerda family settled on their land. Mrs. Shimerda had argued effectively for a move to America so that the children, especially Ambrosch, the eldest son, would have the chance to make a better life for themselves, with more possibilities of moving up in the social hierarchy and of acquiring wealth. The Bohemian newcomers were the Burden's closest neighbors. Fourteen year-old Antonia Shimerda, the eldest daughter became a close friend of Jim's. He was immediately drawn to her warmth and friendliness. When Antonia's father, a sensitive, refined man, discovered that Jim was educated he asked the boy to teach his daughter to speak English. "Te-e-ach, te-e-ach my Án-tonia!" he told/asked Mrs. Burden. Together the two young people worked the land and explored the glorious prairie. And Antonia began to learn English.Unfortunately, Antonia's studies came to an end with her father's tragic suicide. The man missed his native land terribly and was not able to accept his family's extreme poverty or the demands of his wife and son. When he lost his only friends, he sunk into a deep depression from which he was not able to escape. After Mr. Shimerda's death, Antonia had to work even harder, performing the heaviest, most physically demanding chores, just to keep the farm from going under. She was not able to go to school with Jim, and began to slowly lose the refined ways she had learned from her dad.The author describes Antonia's life as Jim perceives it, and from information he gathers from others about the long periods when he did not have contact with her. Their widely different positions in society dictated their life choices and their fortunes. And their lives, their personal histories, parallel the changes and the transformation of the Great Plains. When Antonia and Jim explored the Nebraskan wilderness, it was a wilderness as far as the eye could see. "There seemed to be nothing to see; no fences, no creeks or trees, no hills or fields. If there was a road, I could not make it out in the faint starlight. There was nothing but land: not a country at all, but the material out of which countries are made. No, there was nothing but land--slightly undulating..." And, "I had the feeling that the world was left behind, that we had got over the edge of it, and were outside man's jurisdiction. I had never before looked up at the sky when there was not a familiar mountain ridge against it. But this was the complete dome of heaven, all there was of it." When Jim makes his return trip by train, years later, everything had changed.Willa Cather's prose is straightforward, the narrative is deceptively simple and crystal clear. Her characters are complex and the wonderful, richly textured descriptions of the landscape and life on the plains make reading the novel pure pleasure. The author also captures the interior landscape of her characters with great perception and sensitivity. This is a great work of fiction which depicts a people, and a place in time, which only remain on the pages of a book, preserved vividly by Willa Cather.I prefer to purchase Enriched Classics fiction whenever available. I find they offer readers more affordable editions of great works of literature with supplementary critical text. "My Antonia" contains: a concise introduction by Editor Cynthia Brantley Johnson that gives readers important background information; a chronology of Willa Cather's life and work; a timeline of significant events that provides the book's historical context; an outline of key themes and plot points; detailed explanatory notes; critical analysis, including contemporary and modern perspectives of "My Antonia;" discussion questions ideal for book club conversations; a recommended related bibliography.H.L. Mencken wrote, "No romantic novel ever written in America, by man or woman, is one half so beautiful as 'My Antonia.'"JANA

The Gutenberg project published the free edition in 2004. This book has grown out of lectures upon the historical Jesus given in a good many cities of India. Contents include the Study of the Gospels; Childhood and Youth; The Man and His Mind; The Teacher and the Disciples; The Teaching of Jesus Upon God; Jesus and Man; Jesus' Teaching Upon Sin; The Choice of the Cross; The Christian Church in the Roman Empire; and Jesus in Christian Thought.I'm amazed that anyone would believe it was actually written in 2004. It offers interesting perspectives especially when placed in the context of when it was really written.(RE: A Customer)

By cw05 I can sum up my views on this collection of essays in a single sentence.*I truly feel that after reading this work,I have a much more intimate relationship with Jesus personally, and a far more enlightened idea of the man himself*Some may say that not having a table of contents is a detractor, but let us be honest. We purchased the free version. Be thrifty, use the contents page at the beginning for title references. Then spend a few moments before you begin reading putting in some highlights on the chapter titles as you scroll. Not difficult at all. I would recommend to the more intellectual of my associates. It takes a bit of thought to really analyze all of the points in the book. Outstandingly worded for a book published in the twenties.

He examines all that is historically known about Jesus and reflects on the church of his time.Church leaders of today might take similar positions and then might ask themselves why nothing has changed.

I was intrigued to read perspectives of other Certified Research Mediums, and admire Dr. Beischel's neutral position and humor. Have purchased for relatives and friends who are not in-tune with what Mediums do - how they think, how information comes to them, and more! This is a needed book that tells the perspective of talented, ethical and practiced Mediums and of the brave researcher working with them.

I cannot forego my usual opportunity of saying farewell to my readers in this greetingplace, though I have only to acknowledge the unbounded warmth and earnestness of their sympathy in every stage of the journey we have just concluded. If any of them have felt a sorrow in one of the principal incidents on which this fiction turns, I hope it may be a sorrow of that sort which endears the sharers in it, one to another. This is not unselfish in me. I may claim to have felt it, at least as much as anybody else; and I would fain be remembered kindly for my part in the experience. Dombey and Son, by Charles Dickens

Review ''Dombey and Son, the hidden gem even Dickens fans may have missed, combines a rollicking, biting sense of humor with nuanced psychological insights that feel surprisingly modern in their attitudes toward women . . . As usual in Dickens's work, much of the reading pleasure resides in the supporting cast and subplots, and the men here are endearing . . . But it is the wives, sisters, mothers, and discarded mistresses who control the plot and break your heart.'' --O, the Oprah Magazine''(Audiobook Narrator)Frederick Davidson gives such a splendid dramatization of this family saga . . . it's almost like watching theater. Davidson matches his versatile voice to each one of the principals. He also manages to distinguish with equal elasticity among a host of vivid and disparate supporting characters. Thanks to Davidson's seamless delivery, the narrative sweeps the listener through [nearly] 40 hours of sustained drama.'' --AudioFile ''There's no writing against such power as this-one has no chance.'' --William Makepeace Thackeray - 19th century English novelist, author of Vanity Fair. ''Dickens willed into existence the most capacious and elastic and versatile kind of novel that could be, one big enough for his vast sentimental yearnings and for every impulse and fear and hesitation in him that countervailed those yearnings too. Never parsimonious and frequently contradictory, he always gives us everything he can, everything he's planned to give, and then more.'' --Jonathan Lethem - American novelist, essayist and short story writer.

Classic Dickens By Barbara Goldowsky A hard-hearted father, an angelic daughter, a vengeful wife with a past, hopes placed in children who do not survive to adulthood--all the classic situations and characters we expect from this beloved author. Add a deep belief in redemption through love and forgiveness and you get to the heart of the book. It is intriguing and suspenseful, if a bit long, but then so is all of Dickens. What a serial it would make! Reading these 19th Century authors makes me wish they could return to see the movies and TV dramas they inspired. We are fortunate to have their books. Now: about this Kindle Edition. I bought the illustrated, deluxe version. Unfortunately, the Kindle screen doesn't let you view the images in a large enough format to see what's going on. For all one can make out, A gloomy interior or a London fog is all they show.Written on Charles Dickens' 200th Birthday, December 31, 2012Happy Birthday!

The Unrecognized Dickens Masterpiece By King Dimholt This book may never become as popular as "Oliver Twist," "A Christmas carol," "David Copperfield," or "A Tale of Two Cities." But it really is a phenomenal book. Some critics feel that this book reflects careful planning and organization as opposed to typical Dickens improvisation.Onto the text. Paul Dombey becomes the happy father of Paul Dombey Jr. (But in a double edged scene) Paul Sr. becomes a widower. Paul Sr. has a daughter named Florence, but he doesn't really know what to think of her. Paul has high hopes for his son, but Paul Jr. knows that he is not well.Well, we later meet Waler's uncle Solomon Gills. Solomon is concerned that his business is not doing so well. We also meet the eccentric, but heroic Captain Cuttle. After a tragic dream that foreshadows his death, Paul Jr. dies. Well, to Solomon Gill's sadness, Walter goes off to the West Indies. At this point, Dickens prepares the evil of Paul Dombey's assistant Carker.Trying to move on with his life, Dombey marries Edith. But while Edith likes Florence, her feelings for Dombey are not there. Well, Solomon Gills disappears, and Captain Cuttle goes on his mission to find Solomon and Walter. Dickens gives us a hint of Carker's evil when he is happy about Walter's disappearing. Basically, Carker delights in the misery of others, while at the same time manipulating their lives. Later, carker makes advances on Edith which causes more tension. Not surprisingly, the marriage between Dombey and Edith shatters.Due to Dombey's rages, Florence runs off with Captain Cuttle. This is where the terror reaches maximum levels. Dombey (with some justification) blames Carker for everything that has happened to him. Carker makes a final attempt to rape Edith, and this is when the final confrontation between Carker and Dombey happens. Dombey triumphs, but his revenge makes him more depressed than anything. But all is not lost. Captain Cuttle is reunited with his friends, and Walter and Florence get married and have a son who is the grandson of Paul Dombey of course. There follows a beautiful scene of reconciliation between Paul Dombey and his daughter. As sad as some of Dickens's books get, he seems to be able to put a happy ending on it if he chooses to do so. I love this book. But I will also be the first to tell you that it is different from works like "Oliver Twist" or "David Copperfield." It is highly organized, and does lack the artistic improvisation of his other works. But it is phenomenal in a different way.

Hungry for Dickens By Saline English Teacher I learned in high school to love Charles Dickens and love the fact that I can teach it now as a British Lit teacher. No one can weave a plot like he can with as many characters, many of whom seem to become friends as the reading continues. Although some of his foreshadowings and coincidences are a little contrived, I keep coming back for more. Perhaps I've read too much 20th century literature lately, however, in which things don't always turn out for the best and people don't always live happily ever after! In spite of that, I'll always be hooked on Mr. Dickens and will continue to get shivers every time I stand at his grave in Westminster Abbey!
