For seven weeks the Constellation had been plunging through hyperspace with her eight thousand colonists; fleeing like a hunted thing with her communicators silenced and her drives moaning and thundering. Up in the control room, Irene had been told, the needles of the dials danced against the red danger lines day and night. He has written only three novels and around thirty short stories. With such exiguous production he managed to deliver an outstanding tale: "The Cold Equations" (1954) and a very readable novel: "Space Prison" (1958) (aka "The Survivors").His works are very representative of those times sci-fi; not so great character development, action centered storyline, young adult readers oriented.Nevertheless the present book managed to have a Gnome Press edition and at least two Pyramid Books edition, a good performance for a little known author. The story starts when war between Humans and Gerns erupted. In this context a human interstellar ship with eight thousand colonists is captured. Half of the group is stranded in a hellish planet very suitably named Ragnarok. The four thousand Rejects has to face 1.5 gravity pull, prowlers (a deadly mixture of wolf & tiger), unicorns (massive murderous bulls), Hell Fever, rotten weather (in short term and long term) amongst other "hazards".Their numbers dwindle to forty nine! From that point on generation after generation the Rejected, steel themselves with only one aim: take revenge on the Gerns. One special trait of this novel is not being centered on a character but on successive generations of them, encompassing a two hundred years span. This is a good sample of 50's sci-fi lit.Reviewed by Max Yofre.

My mom didn't drive and I was a couple years too young to drive myself, so the highlight of my summer vacation was to repeatedly ride my bicycle to a hole-in-the-wall library about 3 miles away and check out several sci-fi books to last me for about a week.A couple decades later, I went looking for the book, but I had a wrong title, I thought the title was "Ragnorak". It was only recently that I stumbled across this quite by accident, and recognized it based on the book description. It's an epic story of capture and abandonment, several generations of survival against all odds, then final revenge. Bare in mind, when this book was written, the good guys wore white hats, and always played fair. What was thrilling about this novel was the ending where revenge was going to be complete. No "can't we all just get along". The changing relationship between the fierce inhabitants of the deadly prison planet and the earthlings over several generations was gratifying also.

Real 1950's adolescent Sci-Fi By Alan Meyer [This is a review of _Space Prison_, by Tom Godwin, originally published as _The Survivors_ in 1958.]Four thousand humans are marooned by "Gerns", a fascist alien race (Ger[ma]ns?) at war with humanity, on a terrible planet where only heroic efforts enable any of them to survive at all. But a small band do survive, and they and their descendents plot their revenge.I won't say more about the plot. Another reviewer (Maxi Yofre) has described it quite well. But I will add that this book is the real deal. It epitomizes the 1950's adolescent Sci-Fi that I was reading at the time it was published. Reading it brought back all the thrills of escapist fiction that I loved at age 12 and, when I got my hands on it in 2007, I couldn't stop myself from blazing through it.There's no great literature here. The characters are very thin. The Nazi like Gerns are practically cartoons. All of the hackneyed elements of adolescent adventure fiction are present, fights with wild beasts, treks into the unknown, bold young people, a nasty and selfish would-be leader, a plot that stretches belief, and a resolution that is too good to be true. But for all that, Godwin carries it off with some panache. He mastered the art of writing fast and compelling reading. For those who can find a used copy and can afford it, you'll no doubt like having the 40 cent paperback in hand, complete with futuristic cover art and ads for other books of the times. For everyone else however, you can download the text from the Gutenburg site.
