The distance is only a day's walk for an active man, but I started late, and purposed to sleep the night at a cousin's house by Kirknewton. Often in bright summer days I had travelled the road, when the moors lay yellow in the sun and larks made a cheerful chorus. In such weather it is a pleasant road, with long prospects to cheer the traveller, and kindly ale-houses to rest his legs in. But that day it rained as if the floodgates of heaven had opened. When I crossed Clyde by the bridge at Hyndford the water was swirling up to the key-stone. The ways were a foot deep in mire, and about Carnwath the bog had overflowed and the whole neighbourhood swam in a loch. It was pitiful to see the hay afloat like water-weeds, and the green oats scarcely showing above the black floods. In two minutes after starting I was wet to the skin, and I thanked Providence I had left my little Dutch Horace behind me in the book-box. By three in the afternoon I was as unkempt as any tinker, my hair plastered over my eyes, and every fold of my coat running like a gutter.

An enthralling saga about one man's struggle to survive By Midwest Book Review A novel set during the beginning of the Jamestown Colony, Salute To Adventurers is an enthralling saga about one man's struggle to survive and even find love in a land beset by trade controls with England enforced by pirates, religious strife manifested through a fanatic who stirs Indian tribes to attack settlers, harsh environmental conditions, the unending chores of daily life, and much more. Painting a vivid picture of what it was once like to earn a living in untamed lands, Salute To Adventure is an exciting chronicle featuring conflicts of man vs. nature and man vs. man alike. Action, self-discovery, and the resolve to make the most of one's life distinguish this involving narrative.

Sherman John Buchan, a Scotsman, provides us with another good read, starting in Scotland and ending up in the New America, Jamestown. An adventure yarn with Indians, pirates, good guys and bad guys, and a lovely little romance all tossed in together. For a touch of American history including some Indian tales, try this book out. And check on Kindle, there are other John Buchan works available. Kindle is a good source for historical fiction.

Dolan I love the way John Buchan begins many of his stories with an interesting experience that appears unrelated to the larger story, but isn't at all. He helps you really understand the "character" of the actors. This one could have easily had a sequel!

A young English nobleman, a second son, though his father's favorite, decides to see something of the world and begins traveling on the continent with a friend. He signs on with the troops of Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden, who's aiding German Protestants against, I think, the Catholics. This ten-year period occurs near the end of the Thirty Years War. My knowledge of seventeenth-century European history is practically nonexistent, so I didn't really understand the issues involved and didn't learn much more from this book.In Part II, our nameless hero returns to England, where the Civil War between the Cavaliers (the king's troops) and the Roundheads (Puritans) is about to get underway. (It was at the end of the Civil War that Charles I was beheaded, after which the Commonwealth took over for eleven years until the restoration of Charles II in 1660.) I thought this part might be more interesting, as I do know something about English history, and it was.Like A JOURNAL OF THE PLAGUE YEAR, this book, too, has a fictional narrator in a historical setting. If you like Defoe, you will not dislike this book. If you don't like Defoe, this book won't change your mind.

By Aman It's hard to not only be taken to a different place, but to leave yourself mostly behind and really get into someone else's story. Today, most writers endlessly psychoanalyze people and their motivations and think that they're being deep by "getting into someone's head". However, most psychology is about as deep as a kiddie pool, and not as clean.Defoe presents a story whose details reveal a way of life that is not just dead, but quite foreign to us moderns despite being part of the late Renaissance period. The memoir is so authentic that it quite fooled contemporaries into thinking that it was a real memoir! The beauty of it is by what is said and not said, it reveals a personal narrative whose strengths and weaknesses are self-explanatory and don't require constant self-analysis.And this is a good thing for any of us today, IMHO.As both a part of history with point of view and engaging tale, this is quite good. It may appeal more to those who have been a soldier or know European history of 1630-50, but I think it will have general appeal b/c the narrative voice is so strong.Point to make - the 2-star review has a few of the facts incorrect, and I think misses the point on some of what is represented. The narrator DOES make personal judgments on events he witnesses, often stating it just that way. He says he found Italy not to his liking and explains why, for instance. He finds himself drawn to Gustavus Adolphus and explains why. Yes, there are many terrible events, but the Thirty Years War was particularly brutal and is critical to both a history of Western institutional religion and modern Germany.Generally, I'd say this will appeal to people who want story and memoir with their history, rather than just modern historical analysis.

Of soldiers and citizens By Luc REYNAERT Daniel Defoe's `hero' is a mercenary: `I confess, when I went into arms at the beginning of this war, I never troubled myself to examine sides. I was glad to hear the drums beat for soldiers, as if I had been a mere Swiss, that not cared which side went up or down, so I had my pay.'He is full of admiration for the battle tactics of his masters. But, what happens after the battle is over doesn't bother him: towns delivered to the `fury of the soldiers', plundering, looting and slaughtering innocent women and children. The soldier is amazed about the `prodigious stupid bigotry of the people' and `the entire empire of the priests over the souls and the bodies of people'. But he clearly sees that `religion is the pretence not the cause of war'. Behind the veil of religion lay the fundamental interests of the warring parties: the Protestant masters fighting the Catholics to keep their `privileges' (not paying the tithes to Rome and its clergy) and the Puritans fighting the King in order to restore the rights of their power base (Parliament). This novel with all its massacres and diseases has only historical value as a picture of army life in the 17th century.Only for historians and Defoe fans.

By Michael Wilkinson Another great addition to my library as this book is a fantastic extension of "From Values to Action." Harry is able to communicate important information in a very approachable and informative way. The clear advice and real world examples make his points seem so intuitive. In this book, I found the "Best Team" very useful and a great reset to my mindset regarding teams and people.

Loarie In “Becoming the Best,” Northwestern award-winning professor and author, Harry Kraemer, Jr, draws on his deep experience in the corporate and private-equity worlds to provide insights and a guide for developing values-based leadership (VBL). Kraemer and Harvard’s Bill George (“Discover Your True North”) are antidotes to Stanford’s Jeffery Pfeffer who believes we should distrust leadership experts.Kraemer rightly defines leadership as one’s ability to influence others by relating authentically to every individual with whom they come into contact. It is not about titles and organization charts. We intuitively know this as we have all seen ample examples of leadership in all spheres of life – family, faith, education, health, community, and career. As a turn-around specialist at American Hospital Supply Corp (AHSC), I found that successful transformations were achieved mostly through the influence of informal leaders. It was incumbent on me to quickly identify the positive influencers (get rid of the negative influencers) and inspire them to be change-agents.Kraemer’s formula for success in establishing VBL centers the application of four principles – self-reflection, balance, true self-confidence, and genuine humility – to the five key demands of VBL. These include:• Being the best self: by actualizing who you are meant to become through reflection and introspection. “One needs to develop greater self-knowledge in order to positively influence and lead people.”• Being the best team: by assuring that all team members understand and appreciate what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how that successfully integrates with the goals and objectives of the organization.• Being the best partner: by forging win-win partnerships with vendors and suppliers in order to enhance the customer experience.• Being the best investment: by focusing on generating a return for the owners through positive and meaningful actions that support the mission, vision, and values of the organization. As a best investment, one must commit to developing its greatest asset – its people.• Being the best citizen: by focusing not only on success, but also significance, through social responsibility and making a difference in the world, beyond the organization and its people.I learned first-hand about the rule of “best partner” early in my career when I managed a surgical instrument production facility in Fort Lauderdale for AHSC. I developed very close relationships with two critical vendors. It was a win-win for each party. I managed this operation for five years and as with most manufacturing operations, we had our share of hiccups. Both of these vendors worked late into the night and weekends to help me get back on schedule…..pro bono.A subsequent general manager disregarded these important relationships and demanded unrealistic pricing (the impact of which was negligible on cost of goods). This led to a change of vendors and no support in the time of crisis which cost the facility many more times the savings achieved by cost-cutting. Vendor relationships, as Kraemer notes, must be evaluated holistically. In “Becoming the Best,” Kramer notes in “The Best Investment” that the first crack in the culture usually appears at the top. It may start with something seemingly harmless, such as looking the other way when someone who is a strong performer does something that is inconsistent with the organizations values. Most of us with deep experience have seen the “protected” who are ‘sacred cows” and are unchecked cancers for an organization. I would also add that “at the top” is not limited to the executive team. I have seen increasing dysfunction at the board level in the past decade. VBL extends beyond the team a the top to the board. This is an area that is ripe for sunshine and organizational development.Since I am a big advocate of self-reflection (I have journaled for over thirty years), I must include the excellent questions Kraemer provides for daily reflection. These are:• What did I say I would do today?• What am I proud of, and not proud of?• How did I lead others and how did I follow others?• If I had today to do over again, what would I change?• If I am fortunate to have tomorrow, given what I’ve learned today, how will I act?The benefits of exercises like this are realized only through daily practice.“Becoming the Best” includes interviews with ten values-based leaders from diverse organizations, ranging from small to large, private to public, four-profit to not-four-profit, and domestic to global. It lays out a pathway from understanding to the practice of the VBL principles, and answers common questions Kraemer has been asked since the release of his best-selling book, “From Values to Action.”• How do I develop a balanced perspective?• How do I become truly self-confidence?• How can I gain true self-confidence without being perceived as arrogant or selfish?• What does genuine humility really mean?• If I am generally humble, will I run the risk of not being noticed or passed over?• Do I need both true self-confidence and genuine humility? All proceeds from the sale of this book go to the “One Acre Fund,” which is a non-profit co-founded by one of Kraemer’s MBA students, Andrew Youn. “The One Acre Fund” employs the concept of shared value as explained by Harvard’s Michael Porter and Mark Kramer. It serves more than 200,000 farm families in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and other African countries. Kraemer is an active hands-on, “in-the-field “ participant.

That spring the mohwa tree, that Baloo was so fond of, never flowered. The greeny, cream-coloured, waxy blossoms were heat-killed before they were born, and only a few bad-smelling petals came down when he stood on his hind legs and shook the tree. Then, inch by inch, the untempered heat crept into the heart of the Jungle, turning it yellow, brown, and at last black. The green growths in the sides of the ravines burned up to broken wires and curled films of dead stuff; the hidden pools sank down and caked over, keeping the last least footmark on their edges as if it had been cast in iron; the juicy-stemmed creepers fell away from the trees they clung to and died at their feet; the bamboos withered, clanking when the hot winds blew, and the moss peeled off the rocks deep in the Jungle, till they were as bare and as hot as the quivering blue boulders in the bed of the stream.

Review ''It would take too long to enumerate even half of the marvelous touches by which the creatures miscalled dumb are made to live for us by Rudyard Kipling . . . The saddest words of this volume are those with which he closes, 'And this is the last of the Mowgli stories!' '' --Vogue

About the Author Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

The stories are a wonderful length for read alouds. The Jungle Book is, of course, a classic and not in need of a review; however, if your only exposure to the Jungle Book is Disney, please give this a try. I wanted to commend Sterling Publishers on making a quality, affordable edition of this and other classics. The paper quality was nice, not thin or translucent. The font is also pleasant--not to small or cramped. I know this may seem faint praise, but so many classics collections are very poorly executed. The price is also very agreeable--only slightly more than a paperback.

Over the years I have purchased many copies of each as presents. Both can be difficult to find in versions unaltered from the original. I have found this to be particularly true in the case of The Jungle Book. Some folks just don't seem to get that Kipling had a pretty good handle on what he was doing. One does not tamper with a Masterpiece. This version is the real thing. It reads word for word the same as the tattered, 40-year-old copy that I first read when I was eight years old. Add illustrations by Robert Ingpen that faithfully capture the emotion of the story and you have a real winner. For those who appreciate The Jungle Book as it was BEFORE it was adulterated by Mr. Disney and friends, this is a very worthy effort.

We have the Disney books and movies at home but since he is an avid reader and I love Rudyard Kipling I thought it was time to find him the real deal and this book is it. I like everything about it, the font type, the illustrations, and the writing is, well... Rudyard Kipling. Beautiful, rich, provocative language that unleashes a child's imagination. My son and I devoured it in a few nights and after we were done it led to a really deep discussion on the differences with the Disney's version. It was a welcomed reminder that we can understimate both our children's capacity to digest the classics and their appeal to them.

And now the time has come to say good-bye; and good-byes are always so sad that it is much better when we do not know that we have got to say them. It is so long since Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood came out to greet you in the 'Blue Fairy Book,' that some of you who wore pigtails or sailor suits in those days have little boys and girls of your own to read the stories to now, and a few may even have little baby grandchildren. Since the first giants and enchanted princes and ill-treated step-daughters made friends with you, a whole new world of wheels and wings and sharp-voiced bells has been thrown open, and children have toy motors and aeroplanes which take up all their thoughts and time. You may see them in the street bending over pictures of the last machine which has won a prize of a thousand pounds, and picturing to themselves the day when they shall invent something finer still, that will fly higher and sail faster than any of those which have gone before it.

The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, by Bernard Shaw

From Library Journal CBC Radio has recorded skilled actors of the renowned Shakespeare Festival of Canada reading dramas in front of audiences. The Dark Lady of the Sonnets, a playlet set in London around 1600, involves a palace guard, a quirky Shakespeare, and his lady of the title. A peevish Queen Elizabeth lords it over them amusingly. On the same cassette, a shorter Shakes vs. Shaw has Shakespeare debating George Bernard Shaw about which writer is greater. The author is clever, but these curtain raisers are trifles. Filumena is a worthy production of a popular 1946 Italian classic. For 25 years Filumena, a Neapolitan prostitute, has been the sometime mistress of a stolid businessman from whom she stole money to support her three illegitimate sons. Now she wants to marry him and make them legitimate; only then will she tell him which one is his. The majority of the actors do not affect Italian accents. Brisk pacing keeps this romantic comedy lively. This play, frequently revived in Italy, is recommended for general libraries where drama, especially of foreign origin, is sought. Stephen and Mr. Wilde fictionalizes events in 1882 when Oscar Wilde was in Toronto on a lecture tour. Stephen, his 39-year-old black valet, an illiterate slave until he was 19, uses words like dignified, spontaneous, and modulated. Oscar receives brash reporters at the hotel, one of whom identifies Stephen as a fugitive murderer. This mixture of biography, stock characters, and melodrama lacks conviction. Not recommended. By Marette Stiritz Shaw does a great job of imagining that the "dark lady" is Mary Fitton, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, and of imagining an encounter between Elizabeth and Shakespeare when he slips in to meet Mary. Although Shaw knows by the time that he publishes his play that Mary Fitton is a blonde, this does not take away from his interesting depiction of Elizabeth nor his giving Shakespeare the eloquence he undoubtedly had.

Nasuta A cleverly written play in which Shaw presents his appeal for a National Theater by having Shakespeare appeal to Elizabeth the Queen. One of the main characters that Shaw incorporates in the process is Shakespeare's famous and controversial "The Dark Lady of the Sonnets". A truly enjoyable little sketch of a play.

There are approximately seven million horses in the United States. Each year, over 70,000 end up going to slaughter. Hundreds of thousands more are abused, neglected, or abandoned by callous and irresponsible owners. With a heart as big as a pasture, author Melanie Bowles takes some of these horses into her sanctuary called Proud Spirit. Here, horses that arrive listless and broken find a home where they finally know safety.

The bond between horse and caretaker does not happen overnight. It hangs by a fine thread of trust, which the author earns with endless patience and a full commitment to the well-being of the horses in her care. The horses, some of which have suffered severe abuse, astound her time and again with their ability to trust, return the love they are given, and enjoy the companionship of other horses.

You will meet an entire stableful of remarkable horses:

  • Dusty, a young Thoroughbred who recovered from severe injuries to reveal a rambunctious personality and a knack for stealing hats.
  • Maddy, an elderly mare, and Dancer, a gallant Appaloosa, both of whom had been isolated for years but whose ecstatic first acquaintance at Proud Spirit was, mysteriously, like the reunion of two soul mates.
  • Annie, a little sorrel mare who will break your heart with her weary kindness and who found peace, at last, under an old oak tree in a pasture at Proud Spirit.
  • Wrangler, a Miniature whose premature separation from his dam turned him into a tiny tormentor. His rowdy innocence helped Marshal, a huge palomino Draft horse with neurological trauma, become playful and engaged as he educated Wrangler in horsy manners.
The Horses of Proud Spirit is an homage to the spirit of these alluring creatures and a moving memoir of lessons learned in compassion, strength, and loss.

Review "A good read for anyone who loves horses and is interested in making the world a better place for horses (and people, too)." —Monty Roberts, horse trainer and New York Times best-selling author

About the Author Melanie Bowles, along with her husband, Jim, is the founder of Proud Spirit Horse Sanctuary. Since its modest beginnings in the early 1990s on just five acres of land in southwest Florida, Proud Spirit has evolved into an award-winning, 300-plus-acre facility and one of the most successful, longest-running sanctuaries for horses in the United States. Over the years, Melanie and Jim have intervened on the behalf of nearly 300 horses in need. Melanie is the author of three books that chronicle life at this unique ranch: The Horses of Proud Spirit, Hoof Prints: More Stories from Proud Spirit, and The Dogs of Proud Spirit.

It's for anyone who appreciates life, and is saddened by abuse of any of God's Creatures. Melanie Bowles has done a masterful job of putting in just the right amount of description, not too wordy (verbose), not too sparse. I was extremely touched by her recounting her father's passing, as I was the only one with my father when he passed. This book will tug at your heart strings and touch you deeply. Some of her tales are sweet, some are funny, and a few are painfully sad. I feel a bond with this remarkable writer, simply from reading her book. Hope she writes a sequel!

Sometimes the sadness is almost too much to bear but then a happy story will follow. Such is real life with horses, none of them live forever. If not for people like the author and her many friends and helpers and the countless other private rescue people out there the number of horses suffering without any chance for rescue would boggle the mind. I think this book should be mandatory reading for everyone, animal lover or not, so their eyes will be open to the signs of abuse and they will report it early enough to make a difference.

Inspiring, moving, touching By A Customer (Review by Rafael Citra, FL) I took The Horses of Proud Spirit with me to read on the plane and during the evenings during my recent business trip. When I mentioned to my wife (she had already read the book) that I would start reading the book while waiting for my flight and while on the plane, she said "I don't think that reading the book in public places is a good idea because you will get emotional reading about the horses and I don't think you want strangers seeing you cry." Well I did not listen to her advice. While at the airport terminal, I started reading the book and it just totally absorbed me. It was when we were called to go through security, that I realized that I had tears flowing down my cheeks (yes, grown men do cry). I tried to stop the tears, a mixture of sadness (caused by the abuse suffered by these horses), anger (caused by the harm and abuse some humans brought upon the horses), and joy (the horses regaining their spirit) but they continued to flow for about another five minutes. After that experience, I read the book in the privacy of my hotel room. It is a moving and heart warming book that touches all of our human emotions! It is a testament to the sprit of horses and to the kindness, passion, and strength of one woman!

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. After Two Hundred Years Wait, Revenge Arrives. By Maximiliano F Yofre Tom Godwin (1915-1980) has a strange career as a sci-fi writer. He has written only three novels and around thirty short stories. With such exiguous production he managed to deliver an outstanding tale: "The Cold Equations" (1954) and a very readable novel: "Space Prison" (1958) (aka "The Survivors").His works are very representative of those times sci-fi; not so great character development, action centered storyline, young adult readers oriented.Nevertheless the present book managed to have a Gnome Press edition and at least two Pyramid Books edition, a good performance for a little known author. The story starts when war between Humans and Gerns erupted. In this context a human interstellar ship with eight thousand colonists is captured. Half of the group is stranded in a hellish planet very suitably named Ragnarok. The four thousand Rejects has to face 1.5 gravity pull, prowlers (a deadly mixture of wolf & tiger), unicorns (massive murderous bulls), Hell Fever, rotten weather (in short term and long term) amongst other "hazards".Their numbers dwindle to forty nine! From that point on generation after generation the Rejected, steel themselves with only one aim: take revenge on the Gerns. One special trait of this novel is not being centered on a character but on successive generations of them, encompassing a two hundred years span. This is a good sample of 50's sci-fi lit.Reviewed by Max Yofre.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Searched For This For 50 Years By Gary in Sandy Eggo I read this novel in hardback when I was in High School back in the late 1950's. My mom didn't drive and I was a couple years too young to drive myself, so the highlight of my summer vacation was to repeatedly ride my bicycle to a hole-in-the-wall library about 3 miles away and check out several sci-fi books to last me for about a week.A couple decades later, I went looking for the book, but I had a wrong title, I thought the title was "Ragnorak". It was only recently that I stumbled across this quite by accident, and recognized it based on the book description. It's an epic story of capture and abandonment, several generations of survival against all odds, then final revenge. Bare in mind, when this book was written, the good guys wore white hats, and always played fair. What was thrilling about this novel was the ending where revenge was going to be complete. No "can't we all just get along". The changing relationship between the fierce inhabitants of the deadly prison planet and the earthlings over several generations was gratifying also.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Real 1950's adolescent Sci-Fi By Alan Meyer [This is a review of _Space Prison_, by Tom Godwin, originally published as _The Survivors_ in 1958.]Four thousand humans are marooned by "Gerns", a fascist alien race (Ger[ma]ns?) at war with humanity, on a terrible planet where only heroic efforts enable any of them to survive at all. But a small band do survive, and they and their descendents plot their revenge.I won't say more about the plot. Another reviewer (Maxi Yofre) has described it quite well. But I will add that this book is the real deal. It epitomizes the 1950's adolescent Sci-Fi that I was reading at the time it was published. Reading it brought back all the thrills of escapist fiction that I loved at age 12 and, when I got my hands on it in 2007, I couldn't stop myself from blazing through it.There's no great literature here. The characters are very thin. The Nazi like Gerns are practically cartoons. All of the hackneyed elements of adolescent adventure fiction are present, fights with wild beasts, treks into the unknown, bold young people, a nasty and selfish would-be leader, a plot that stretches belief, and a resolution that is too good to be true. But for all that, Godwin carries it off with some panache. He mastered the art of writing fast and compelling reading. For those who can find a used copy and can afford it, you'll no doubt like having the 40 cent paperback in hand, complete with futuristic cover art and ads for other books of the times. For everyone else however, you can download the text from the Gutenburg site.

"[...]any case, because we are at present going through a period of reaction, we should refrain from sneering at those perhaps over-earnest men, of whom Mr. Edgeworth was a type, who, in a frivolous age, rebelled against their unthinking contemporaries. It is too much the fashion to stigmatize these men as prigs; pragmatic no doubt they were, conceited and self-confident, and, like all minorities, over-ardent. Still it cannot be enough borne in mind that the people of that period who thought, thought more and read more thoroughly than those of to-day. They[...]".

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. very helpful 19th century biography By Ruellia Review, Monday, September 9, 2013Monday, September 9, 2013This was a vivid, well told biography that helps you get straight on Maria Edgeworth's 21 siblings, her 3 stepmothers and numerous cousins. The descriptions of her visits to Paris and London are particularly good. It is worth reading for the extensive quotation from Maria's letters about her visit to Mme de Genlis alone, which shows how powerful a writer Maria could have been. It also includes a great quote from Byron's journal describing Maria and her father.Zimmern goes through all of the novels in detail with interesting critical appraisals. I completely disagree with her dismissal of _Harrington_ which is a brilliant and very effective novel, and I would not praise _Helen_ as highly as she does, but I found Zimmern's critical appraisals sensitive, thoughtful, and interesting. She addressess Maria Edgeworth's father's rewriting and "correcting" Maria's work at length. This is a very helpful book for those looking for background and information on Maria Edgeworth, especially as there is so little about her and the price is right!

I read this because Jane Austin wrote that she read every book by Maria Edgeworth. Edgeworth is no where near the talent that Jane Austin was but it was interesting to read about how and why she wrote at a time when few women did.

It embraces a broad view of the landscape of mixed methods research (MMR) and provides the reader with a ‘one-stop shop’ for operationalizing MMR. I believe it can serve as a ‘field guide’ to the broad and often confusing world of MMR.” (Theresa A. Beery)“I appreciate seeing that the author(s) provided up-to-date and the most cutting-edge references on mixed methods for the reader to seek out, as needed.” (Daphne C. Watkins)“I loved the tables and textboxes. They were full of so much information and very useful to reflect on as one reads the narrative.”  (Deborah Gioia)"It is kind of refreshing to see this new theoretical perspective for MMR that goes beyond the acknowledgement that MMR fills a void in the field of methodology as following or being viewed only from the philosophical lens of pragmatism…Their content…represents yet another viable theoretical perspective beyond pragmatism" (Arturo Olivárez, Jr.)

Another great book by Mildred Wirt By colandme I love this book and the Penny Parker series and highly recommend both to anybody who is a fan of girls series books from the 1930's-1940's, a fan of the Nancy Drew series, or of the works of Mildred Wirt.

Best PDF Ebook Online Woody Plants of the Southwest: A Field Guide With Descriptive Text, Drawings, Range Maps, and Photographs, by Samuel H. Lamb

Much more than a catalog of trees and shrubs, Woody Plants of the Southwest is an encyclopedia-like discussion covering all except the herbaceous vegetation of portions of the southwestern United States and a narrow strip of adjoining Mexico. Samuel H. Lamb has not only identified hundreds of woody plants, but has arranged them by families, explained their Latin names, and has provided a brief biography of persons, primarily botanists, who have been honored by having their names included in the accepted scientific nomenclature. He has also provided one or more common names in English and Spanish. Photographs, and in some cases sketches, of portions of plants help in their recognition. Maps of southwestern states broken down by counties, are used to point out the distribution one each species, and effects of elevation are illustrated by listing the life zone in which each species is most at home. Certainly this book is a welcome addition to the botany and natural history of the southwestern United States, and is worthy of inclusion in any library. The book is a winner of the Border Regional Library Association Award for literary excellence and enrichment of the cultural heritage of the American Southwest.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Saved me!! By Octavio i ordered this book for my dendrology class and it really saved me a lot of time in the field and identification in the lab. The maps provided are an excellent resource for identification; i received the book early and in almost new condition, great book and great seller.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good reference for identification (AZ). wish it had color pixs By Amazon Customer This is the best reference I have found for identifying trees and shrubs. At first glance it seems outdated with illustrations and poor black and white photos, but it has grown on me. The illustrations actually make understanding the subtle differences in leaves easier than actual photos. I do find myself using this book to identify plants and then use Google to find photos for confirmation. I would give 5 stars if it had a few high quality color photos along with the illustrations.

"[...]any of the Tolstoyan type of mind. The very title of this story strikes the note of this sudden and simple vision. The philanthropist writing long letters to the Daily Telegraph says, of men living in a slum, that "their degeneration is of such a kind as almost to pass the limits of the semblance of humanity," and we read the whole thing with a tepid assent as we should read phrases about the virtues of Queen Victoria or the dignity of the House of Commons. The Russian novelist, when he describes a dosshouse, says, "Creatures that once were Men." And we are arrested, and regard the facts as a kind of terrible fairy tale. This story is a test case of the Russian manner, for it is in itself a study of decay, a study of failure, and a study of old age. And yet the author is forced to write even of staleness freshly; and though he is treating of the world as seen by eyes darkened or blood-shot with evil experience, his own eyes look out upon the scene with a clarity that is almost babyish. Through all runs that curious Russian sense that every man is only a man, which, if the Russians ever are a democracy, will make them the most democratic democracy that the world has ever seen. Take this passage, for instance, from the austere conclusion of "Creatures that once were Men." Petunikoff smiled the smile of the conqueror and went back into the [...]".
