It kept true to Chaucer's original text, yet kept in time and rhyme scheme for the modern English translation. The fact that the original text is included on the opposite page as the translation, it allows you to see and even read the story the way Chaucer originally wrote it. If you have the time to work on your middle English pronunciation (assuming you are not familiar with it), it makes reciting it enjoyable and those who care to listen enjoy just hearing it.With all that said, someone looking to read more text in the original English text from this period may find this a great starting point to become acquainted with the language. It is not difficult to learn and once one is use to it, then it is pretty easy to follow quickly. Compared to other translations of middle English texts I have read compared to this (including a linear translation of the Canterbury Tales) I must say this is the best simply because, as I already mentioned, it is kept in time and rhyme scheme and just rolls off the tongue unlike many others which seem tedious! As for the story fantastic! I will not give anything away, but the underlying theme and the ever present tradition of curtly love is magnificent. It really allows anyone today to see just how much the concept of love has changed over all these years!

Barrett Starting off with a solid forward by Bernard O'Donoghue, this fun short tale by this medieval writer kicks off. It involvers a dreamer and his dream, without going into details themselves as I am not an expert in the field of poetry. However, two key features make this thin volume worth the purchase:1) It has the old English on one page and the translation opposite it;2) the translation is very readable, making it a jaunty verse to read even aloud. And if you are interested in delving deeper into the meaning and structure of the phrases please refer back to point number 1.

Two Very Different Versions - Challenging, But Enjoyable By Michael Wischmeyer A few months ago I had the good fortune to find a copy of a parallel text edition (Regents Renaissance Drama series by University of Nebraska Press) of the 1601 quarto and the 1616 folio of Every Man In His Humour. My enthusiasm may seem surprising, but I did enjoy this rather obscure work. This play, Ben Jonson's first theatrical success, was first performed in 1598 by the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Remarkably, the cast included Shakespeare, Burbage, and Kemp. The term humour, derived from the Latin word for fluid, refers to a Medieval and Renaissance medical theory that a man's health and personality were due to the balance (or imbalance) of four fluids, or humours: blood, phlegm, yellow bile (choler), and black bile (melancholy). The Elizabethan audience would have recognized that Jonson's characters were caricatures of various temperaments and personalities.Jonson later significantly revised this play. My edition compares the two versions on facing pages: the 1601 quarto with a Florentine setting and Italian names, and the 1616 folio with a London setting and English characters. I first tried reading the two versions in parallel, a page from one followed by the equivalent page from the other, but I was soon utterly confused. I began again, reading one version in its entirety before reading the other.Every Man in His Humour is more challenging than Jonson's better known plays. I was into Act 2 before I began to appreciate the humorous interplay between the characters. The turning point occurred when the servant Musco (weirdly named Brainworm in the London version) disguised himself as a penniless soldier looking for charity. I gradually recognized four intertwined themes:1) Two young, high-spirited gentlemen, Lorenzo Junior (Edward Kno'well) and Prospero (Wellbred), deliberately encourage the foolish antics of other characters, quietly laughing at them in frequent asides.2) Meanwhile, Lorenzo Senior (Kno'well) worries that his son is mixing with less reputable acquaintances.3) Musco (Brainworm) independently embarks on several zany ventures, all involving disguises, to assure that Lorenzo Junior (Edward Kno'well) is beholden to him.4) And lastly, the merchant Thorello (Thomas Kitely) mistakenly convinces himself that his wife Biancha (Dame Kitely) and his sister Hesperida (Mistress Budget) are being wooed by the foolish mix of characters that descended upon his home. (Shakespeare may have derived the name Othello from Jonson's jealous Thorello.)For the reader new to Ben Jonson, I suggest starting with either The Alchemist, or Volpone, or possibly Bartholomew Fair. All three plays are widely available from publishers like Oxford World Classics, the New Mermaids editions, or the Dover Thrift editions (least expensive, but sparse footnotes).

By Don Kidwell ...and that when you're in the wrong you can't afford to lose it." Great book loaded with timeless wisdom from an individual I'd have liked to have met given his no nonsense quips. Comes across as very intelligent (maybe no surprise given his being the editor of the Saturday Evening Post at one time) and includes a very good image gallery at the close with references to the Armor meat-packing company that had me hunting for more info on the internet. Very good book and leave you with one other quote I really liked, "Puttimg off an easy thing makes it hard, and putting off a hard one makes it impossible."

Sure it's old school, but dont let that dissuade you. I docked a star because this particular reprint has an incredibly small typeface/font. Easy to find .pdf downloads, however I wanted a bound copy to give as a gift. This will suffice but not ideal.

Devereux The story of two children who come to spend a summer with a single uncle and unravel a lot of family history thru brilliant storytelling and help in restoring a broken relationship between the uncle and his cousin. Thru the eyes of a young boy, however the story is for girls and boys alike as my 10-yr old daughter did not want it to end. The ending is not sugar-coated, but shows plainly the sometimes painful consequences of hurtful actions when a wayward cousin, although forgiven by his loving cousins, cannot be forget and forgive himself. It is a beautifully written book full of the children's adventures and a great mystery which unfolds chapter by chapter.

He's a real favorite. But. This visit there is something a bit off. Jasper isn't acting like himself at all. They're worried about him, and rightly so it turns out.The book opens with Oliver escaping or running away. Jasper has arranged for them both (Oliver and Janet) to meet someone--a cousin their own age, a girl. It's the last bit that decides it for Oliver. So off he goes in bit of a mood. But he meets someone very interesting. Two people actually. A man he calls Beeman, and a girl around his own age. And the 'Beeman' is quite a storyteller. They become friends, and, he brings Janet to meet them both. They eventually confide in him their worries about Jasper...Did I enjoy The Windy Hill? For the most part, yes. I liked the Beeman's stories best of all. These stories are adventure-packed. They also turn out to be true family stories. The book itself has some excitement--or action. The characters do more than sit around listening to stories. It concerns a flood. So plenty of drama is to be had.Windy Hill was a quick read. It was enjoyable enough. Perhaps not a 'must' read, but nice all the same.

As a child, I remember this book being a breath of fresh air after reading Hendrik Willem van Loon's 'The Story of Mankind.' That didn't change as an adult. This story chronicles the dynamics of an extended family, with one character, known as The Beeman until readers figure out who he is, doling out family stories to the main character, Oliver Peyton, and his sister, Janet. The Beeman's information becomes important as the story progresses and readers start to connect the dots. This book is built around the notion that children can figure out details on their own. For instance, this book starts without telling us when or where we are in time. I assume 1920s because of publication date; as for location, several clues like "by the sea" and "great Atlantic rollers , tumbling in upon the beach" point readers to the general area. The Beeman's first story is about Native Americans and gives us a better idea of location with the name of a medicine man: Secotan, a former tribe of North Carolina. And that sets the theme - readers are encouraged to use their heads to figure out the mystery before the end of the book reveals all.The writing reminds me of Mary Stewart (The Moonspinners, The Arthurian Saga), with passive prose and lovely descriptions of nature/gardens weaving around a mystery. This book isn't PC by today's standards but, for parents who plan ahead, this book offers an opportunity to begin discussion about changing stereotypes and the history of both racism and misogyny with their kids (example, the use of the highly-offensive word squaw to describe Native American women). This book documents the history of changing attitudes within American society, opening a door to talk about these issues and how the past affects today - which is another theme of this book: the past builds the present which builds the future. I advise parents to read this book with their kids for just that reason - they are our future and they can't change it for the better if they don't understand the past.

They can sell desirable products at a high price with a deliberately constrained level of supply. It can be tempting to add more inventory to squeeze out even more revenue and profit, yet where do you draw the line. Is it worth risking your luxury brand and position by sliding towards commoditisation? The author takes a specialised, focussed look at this thorny issue, hopefully guiding the reader towards the ideal balance. Even to the outsider, this can be a fascinating subject to consider, although the book’s price might mean it is less of an impulse buy to the information-curious. If you have a practical business need for this kind of information and thoughts you won’t even think about the price.Written as a series of essays, the author considers many different issues such as brand sustainability, transforming product positioning, logos, pricing and marketing exclusivity. You don’t need to work within a luxury brand sector-company to get a lot of benefit out of the book. You just need to leave yourself enough time to think about the points raised by the author and really maximise the benefits of his counsel. A lot of the author’s thinking can be applied universally if you try hard enough.

Research-based book on the luxury model By Audrey AS What I love about this book is that it is "Kapferer" on luxury, and not just another book on the trendy topic of luxury. And what does this mean? It means, I believe, a book where concepts are explained and used in a neat and clean fashion, disentangled from adjacent concepts. Luxury is different from premium, and from fashion. This book also a fantastic read for anyone who wants to understand what is the luxury model, from all the perspectives: marketing, of course, but also from a corporate strategy point of view. It appears that understanding luxury is not only about understanding what it represents for the consumers, and why consumers love luxury products, but it is also about grasping that luxury is an industry, as well as an economic model, with its rules and results. And to grow a luxury business, a company has yet to remain rare. How can they achieve that? Read the book and you'll understand!I also enjoyed reading about the relationship between luxury and arts. It is very well thought: "Art reinforces [luxury brands'] symbolic authority", and it helps all the industry "downplay the social stratification motivation of consumer demand and to foster more humanistic motivations, such as [...] tradition, culture, [...] creativity, and timelessness."This book is based on research and that makes it a very unique read, for researchers and practitioners alike.I enjoyed reading it and learned a lot from it.

Brilliant and fascinating By Chris Ramey Jean-Noel Kapferer is a true thought-leader in the luxury segment. ‘Kapferer on Luxury’ is another brilliant book from Dr. Kapferer. I found it very easy to read as it is a compilation of many articles. It’s clear, concise, and forward-thinking.As someone who makes their living in the luxury segment, I feel comfortable writing that you’re not really in the luxury segment unless you’re reading everything Kapferer writes. And if you’re in the luxury segment then you’ll also find yourself referring back to his books on a routine basis. ‘Kapferer on Luxury’ is no different. If you’re a marketer you’ll find the book fascinating. If you’re a luxury marketer or a manager in the luxury segment then consider this book ‘required reading.’

Sins of the Father By Gary Severance Rebecca West's novel The Judge (1922) shows her progress as a writer of fiction four years after the publication of her first novel, The Return of the Soldier (see my review on Amazon). Intricate character development and engaging descriptions of the Scot and British environments are presented in both novels. The psychological tension and interweaving of the landscapes guiding the story are more evident in West's second novel producing a work that is more coherent and interesting. The Judge, a much longer novel, is evenly paced though the story is limited in action and scope. The tale of a poor young girl's fascination with the beauty of life and her domination by an older more experienced and economically set man is simple and direct. The entanglements of Richard's past begin to restrict Ellen's emotional and physical freedom. The Yaverland family history entangles the intelligent young girl and forces her to endure the seamier borders of her fate. The story becomes complex as West tightens the psychological noose on Ellen. West uses retrospective descriptions of Richard's mother Marion and her persecution by people in a small ingrown British sea town to structure the characters' future and push them toward an inevitable outcome. If you like a tightly structured story, psychologically intimate character portraits, and poetically detailed descriptions of settings, you will enjoy reading The Judge. While reading you can consider the power of people, related by family or sharing a community, to judge each other and administer sentences for the perception of sins committed against them.

The Christmas Child, by Hesba Stretton

About the Author HESBA STRETTON (1832–1911) was born in Wellington, England. She had the good fortune of being able to read books from her father’s bookshop, a printer of evangelical literature. Her mother was a strong evangelical, but died when Sarah was young. When Sarah Smith began writing, Hesba Stretton was her pen name, Stretton coming from the name of a neighboring village, and Hesba coming from the initials of her siblings. She wrote Jessica’s First Prayer in 1867, which became one of her most beloved stories. It sold very well and was translated into many languages. Other best sellers were Little Meg’s Children and Alone in London. She was familiar with the troubles of street children whom she visited and helped. She wrote over 60 books and stories which highlight Biblical principles. KATE ELIZABETH STREET (1858–1921) was born in Lewisham, Kent, England. She was the daughter of James and Eliza Street. She attended art school and then became a watercolor painter of birds and flowers. She lived in London with her brother, Edward Street, who was an architect.

By ^^jj^^ ^j^ On a little mountain farmstead on the coast of South Wales owned by Miss Priscilla Parry, a hard woman, who adopted her neice, Rhoda Parry, in infancy. Old Nathan the head servant plays a wonderful part in this story. Joan, under 6 years of age when her mother (another neice of Miss Parry) died in London and was sent to live with Aunt Priscilla Parry without being asked if she would raise the child. A baby boy was found in the stable in the manger on Christmas Day by Joan who thought he was baby Jesus.

It almost has the feel of "A Christmas Carol" only instead of a nasty, greedy old man, we have an embittered old woman. The ending is very nice; but, along the way we lose a kind and loving character. The story title refers to a child found in a manger, in the barn, on a farm where a young woman lives with her guardian, an old workhand, and a young relative whose parents have died and who the guardian does not care to raise. Since the old woman is "stuck" with the child, the only thing she does is just tolerate her presence. The young woman and the little girl form a bond. Ar Christmas the young woman tells the little girl of something she does every year, and that is to go into the barn and see if the Christ Child has come to stay in their manger. Of course, that never happened, until one year.... You'll have to read it yourself. Grab a cup of tea or hot chocolate and enjoy the story.

How did this universe begin? How old is our universe? How did matter come to exist? What is the Big Bang theory? These questions arise in the mind of everyone who is studying evolution or creationism. The Big Bang theory is the theory that scientists use to explain the beginning of this universe. It is the most common cosmological model designed for the universe from ancient known periods, through its subsequent large-scale evolution. Obviously, this is not a simple topic and throughout our short history on this planet, much time and energy has been spent searching for the evidence to support the various theories. Yet, after all this energy has been expended, much of what we know is still only speculation. However, we have come a long way from mystical beginnings of the study of cosmology and the origins of the universe. This book exposes the pros and cons of the Big Bang theory.

But he was told, that the argument should be confined merely to the nature of the evidence; and that might be considered, without entering into any such controversy as he would avoid; and, to bring the matter within bounds, and under one view, the evidence of Christ's resurrection, and the exceptions taken to it, should be the only subject of the conference. With such persuasion he suffered himself to be persuaded, and promised to give the company, and their new-made judge, a meeting that day fortnight. The judge and the rest of the company were for bringing on the cause a week sooner; but the council for Woolston took the matter up, and said, Consider, Sir, the Gentleman is not to argue out of Littleton, Plowden, or Coke, authors to him well known; but he must have his authorities from Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; and a fortnight is time little enough of all [...]".

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Powerful Case By Nick Peters One of the great benefits of having a Kindle is that one can read old books for free. Included in that would be a book such as "Trial of the Witnesses of the Resurrection of Jesus" (TWRJ) by Thomas Sherlock. The book was written in 1729 in response to the deist Thomas Woolston. Sherlock presents the case in a court room setting with the gospels being tried. Woolston takes one position and Sherlock another before a judge. Sherlock disposes of Woolston's arguments as well as giving the positive evidence. The reader could be surprised to see that some modern controversies are still showing up and even answered beforehand. For instance, this book was published nineteen years before Hume's "Inquiry Concerning Human Understanding" and yet already, Hume's argument is dealt with. If we are to judge everything by our own experience, what of someone who lives in a tropical culture and is told about such a thing as water freezing and becoming solid? It will be outside of their experience and they have no basis to accept it other than the personal testimony of someone who says otherwise. (Note also these cultures would not have access to television or internet)Also, it is my opinion that back then, Christians faced off against better arguments. Their opponents were far more informed. This is different from today where one can just be stunned at the ignorance of people like the new atheists in the areas of philosophy, theology, and biblical studies.Sherlock's presentation in this work is quite strong fortunately which leads to the next conclusion. The opponents had better arguments, but fortunately, so did the Christians. Sherlock shows that for Woolston, explaining the Christian account of reality is quite difficult, and this even without much of our modern understanding of how the biblical world was an honor-shame culture. It is a wonder to think about what Sherlock would have said if he had been around today and imbibed himself of some of what we've learned since his time. Some arguments back then were seen as bizarre ipso facto. Would that they still were. Consider this on page 33. "...if the argument be good at all, it will be good to prove, that there never was such a man as Jesus in the world. Perhaps the gentleman may think that this is a little too much to prove: and if he does, I hope he will quit the argument in one case as well as in the other; for difference there is none."Yes. The idea that Jesus never existed was seen as ludicrous. If only such thinking was around today, but unfortunately internet atheists regularly buy into this idea. Some will say that they think that He did exist, but it's possible to build a convincing case that He didn't. Oh wait. It's not just internet atheists any more. Dawkins on page 122 of "The God Delusion" says it's possible to build a serious though not widely supported case that Jesus never even existed. On page 127 of "The New Atheism", Victor Stenger says that we know Joseph Smith existed, but we cannot be so sure in the case of Muhammad or Jesus. In "The Portable Atheist", starting on page 430, Ibn Warraq, an ex-Muslim, starts an argument for the case that Jesus never even existed.Tell any of these guys that ID is serious science (A case I'm not arguing for here.) and you'll be laughed to no end. Yet here these non-specialists come out and make the case that the Jesus myth is serious history. Perhaps the advice on page 4 of TWRJ would help. "He is but a poor council who studies on one side of the question only."Ultimately, the case will come down to Sherlock's greatest proclamation in my opinion in the book. On page 15 he gives the challenge to Woolston. "There is therefore here no medium: you must either admit the miracle or prove the fraud."And today, the challenge still stands. Someone must admit the miracle or prove the fraud, and it looks like the fraud side is lacking even more today. In Christ,Nick PetersDeeper Waters Christian Ministries

Should be considered a classic of Christian literature By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson Between 1728 and 1729, the Cambridge Deist, Thomas Woolston (1670-1733) published six discourses on the miracles of Jesus Christ, in which he attempted to show that Jesus’ miracles could not have possibly happened. In 1729, Anglican Bishop Thomas Sherlock (1678-1761) set out to answer Woolston’s arguments. Having been master of the Inner Temple, Sherlock was familiar with the legal profession, so he literarily placed the Apostles on trial for faking the Resurrection. In this trial, the barrister representing Woolston uses Woolston’s own arguments, while Bishop Sherlock provides the arguments for the Apostles’ barrister. In this work, Sherlock did an excellent job of using the opposition’s arguments skillfully, and not merely caricaturing them. The dialogue is exciting, and the arguments are quite thought provoking.Though this book is largely forgotten now, it should rightly be considered a classic of Christian literature. I highly enjoyed reading it, and highly recommend it to everyone. This is an excellent book.

A decent defense of the resurrection By peter315 While I enjoyed and profited from this book, it seems they were arguing over the right interpretation of the gospel narratives. I would consider this book for beginners on the resurrection. I liked the fact it was written as a Socratic dialogue.

The popularity of germ-free animal models, particularly mice, for investigation of human physiology and disease has recently exploded. Gnotobiotic Mouse Technology: An Illustrated Guide provides the first manual for the maintenance, husbandry, and experimental manipulation of germ-free and gnotobiotic mice. It includes information on all aspects of establishing and operating a germ-free mouse research facility, from basic principles and equipment to detailed instructions for assembling and maintaining isolators, sterilizing supplies, handling animals, and monitoring sterility.

The book breaks down techniques and procedures into modules, each of which contains a step-by-step practical and visual guide to a set of related procedures. Each description consists of a materials list, introduction, and general overview, followed by a thoroughly illustrated walkthrough of the steps for each procedure. The descriptions end with troubleshooting tips. Technical chapters are heavily illustrated and include notations of potential pitfalls and alternatives. Other chapters discuss management procedures and practices such as the hiring and training of personnel, setting fee schedules, and record keeping.

This book is a landmark resource for establishing and maintaining a facility for germ-free mouse research. Useful to both technicians and investigators, it presents every step necessary to establish a successful facility. It also gives direction in expanding multi-user facilities and applying new technologies to your current practices.

About the Author

Chriss J. Vowles co-manages a multi-investigator germ-free research laboratory at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He began his career at the University of Michigan in 2003, working full-time as a husbandry technician in the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine. In 2006, he discovered gnotobiotic technology. At that time, the Germ Free Laboratory was just starting. Chriss joined the research group on the ground floor and has been growing with it ever since. The idea of maintaining a germ-free, complex organism fascinated him then and still captivates him today. After eight years of maintaining a germ-free colony of mice, the laboratory is still evolving, he is still learning, and his trials, tribulations, and rewards are constant.

Natalie E. Anderson is a research technician lead at the University of Michigan’s Germ Free Core. In 2009, she graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and accepted a position with SoBran’s contract for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In December 2010, she returned to Michigan to take a position with the University of Michigan’s Unit for Lab Animal Medicine. Shortly thereafter, she started working part-time in the Germ Free Core and quickly learned to love the daily challenges involved in maintaining a germ-free colony. Natalie joined the core full time in July 2013.

Kathryn A. Eaton has been working with germ-free and gnotobiotic animal models for 30 years. She started her gnotobiology career at Ohio State University, where she did her PhD research on Helicobacter pylori in gnotobiotic piglets. She went on to study mice several years later, and in 2004 she established the University of Michigan Germ Free Mouse Laboratory, which she now directs. Dr. Eaton is a board-certified veterinary pathologist with research interests in bacterial enteric disease and immunology. In addition to H. pylori, she has worked with gnotobiotic animal models of shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli, inflammatory bowel disease, and, most recently, the roles of the enteric microbiome in health and disease. She has long been a staunch supporter of gnotobiotic research and is greatly encouraged by the recent explosion of new investigations, methods, and models that have enhanced the utility and availability of germ-free animal models of disease.

I would be able to listen better if he spoke in a more conversational tone and stopped trying to "sell" me through the entire book. I already bought it!! One of the CDs would not play but I was unable to return it because it was past the "return window" for Amazon. All in all, the message is the same throughout the book--you are responsible for your success, take help when you need it and don't take no for an answer.
