About the Author Dr. Joseph Fiksel serves as Executive Director of the Sustainable and Resilient Economy program at The Ohio State University, and is a research faculty member in the Integrated Systems Engineering Department. He coordinates Ohio State’s collaboration with leading global companies, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to develop new methods and tools for improving the sustainability and resilience of enterprises and supply chains. Previously, he was Director of Decision & Risk Management at Arthur D. Little and Vice President for Life Cycle Management at Battelle. He holds a bachelor’s degree from M.I.T., a doctorate in Operations Research from Stanford University, and an advanced degree from La Sorbonne in Paris.

Mixed By Autamme_dot_com Unless you are a monopoly business, such as a local supplier of water piped direct to the home, or a government-type institution such as a tax authority, you probably have to be a resilient, flexible business; or more precisely you should be. Far too many old-world models have been disrupted by change; some businesses have floundered and adapted whilst others are purposefully resilient, resilient by design in other words.Managers and company executives need to look over their business with a new critical gaze, possibly changing assumptions and once-working models and structures; trying to second-guess competitive threats, disruptive changes and really anything that can knock the business off its pedestal. Change can come very quickly: do you fancy buying a fax machine sales business? Hardly any competitors so the market could be yours… How about you think you are clever buying a year’s components up cheap from overseas whilst running a JIT model; ah, the lorry delivering your load has caught fire 50 km away from your factory. What now?This book aims to provide business leaders with an entire roadmap and strategy to help stabilise their business during potential change; it can even allow a business to embrace and benefit from the flux. Mixing theory and practical examples of resilient corporate organisations, the author underlines how essential it is to link all “stakeholders”, whether internal or external, together to create dynamic, innovative, responsive and resilient organisations, cooperation chains and networks.The author describes the grand plan as being less of a rigid specification and planning structure and more of a responsive, dynamic intervention programme, writing: “To understand these complexities, businesses will begin to collaborate more closely with government, academia, and non-profit groups. Even minor incidents such as a local power failure can cause significant financial losses.”The warning bell should sound loudest for both new business due to possible inexperience and especially for the larger, established venture. The author describes it as: “(these companies) become vulnerable to surprises and slow to recover from disruptions. Companies that emphasize stability may cling to outmoded practices and proven technologies, may fail to question their assumptions, and may have blind spots that hamper their recognition of external change. As a consequence, they are unable to react to external challenges until they reach a state of crisis and require a drastic intervention. On the flip side, companies that embrace change are better positioned to identify and seize emerging opportunities more nimbly than their competitors.”This can be a bit of a specialist, esoteric read but nonetheless a worthy consideration, a strategic read if you will. Maybe your company already has its house in order, but maybe it doesn’t hurt to check in case you’ve missed a good idea or two? For those who need more extensive corporate remodelling, this book can act as a good guide to future planning.

Businesses today need to be both sustainable and resilient. A great deal of attention is rightly being given by many writers to sustainability. Resilience – defined in this book as “the capacity to survive, adapt, and flourish in the face of turbulent change” – is a related concept but it is different and it deserves the kind of attention it gets here. This book is comprehensive in scope, filled with real life examples and very readable. Business leaders, business stakeholders of all kinds, public policymakers, researchers and students alike will appreciate its insights.
