Wonderful Collection of Short Stories By tumbleweed Hillsboro People is a compilation of short stories about the people of Hillsboro, a rural town in Vermont.The stories are set in various time periods in Hillsboro, mainly the 1800s.Each story is deeply human and engaging, focusing a particular Hillsboro person or incident. Dorothy Canfield Fisher writes in a style both straightforward and intelligent, and the tone is redemptive without being trite or syrupy.I picked this up after reading Understood Betsy (as an adult) and didn't know what to expect. It was a pleasant surprise. If you enjoyed Understood Betsy you'll enjoy Hillsboro People; this is one of the best pieces of fiction I've read in a long time.It saddens me that there are few authors writing fiction of this quality today. Please feel free to add your recommendations of similar authors and books in the comments.

Thompson I read Understood Betsy for the first time as a child, and I've read it a couple times since. It's a good book, and well before its time, as it's actually a screed against helicopter parenting, a term that didn't exist in the 60s when I read it for the first time. More recently, I ran across this compilation of stories set in the same part of Vermont where the bulk of Understood Betsy takes place. I'm glad I did. These are very good stories, with a slightly old fashioned sensibility (not surprisingly, since they were written several decades ago). Unlike Understood Betsy, these are stories written for an adult audience. I enjoyed them a lot.

I heard Hal Niedzviecki interviewed on To the Best of Our Knowledge from Wisconsin Public Radio, and ordered Trees On Mars immediately. In it, he gives us a lot to think about. He argues that our quality of life is declining despite Moore's Law and all its consequences, as well as the frantic pace of so many of our lives. Despite our material abundance, many of us sense that we have lost the thread of living in a civilized way. Many businesses seem to operate as rackets. Narcissism is rampant.I finished the book while taking my wife to a Podiatrist appointment at the University Sports Medicine Clinic, and did the book ever resonate! Despite having been seen at the clinic 6 months earlier, they couldn't find my wife in their computer system ("We changed databases recently"). The printer connected to the computer connected to the X-ray machine was broken. Later in the visit we met with their orthotic/shoe expert, who told us that NONE of the major shoe manufacturers does any quality control anymore, so much of their inventory is garbage. He spends a lot of his time grinding down the heels of patients' new shoes so they make a reasonably square contact with the ground. We drove home and I switched on the TV - they were interviewing John Bogle, the founder of Vanguard, about the recent stock market downdraft. It sounded like something I could learn from. Only I couldn't watch it because our cable feed (for which we pay a lot) was so unstable that only one word out of three was audible. Thank you Hal for telling it like it is!

Roy Trees on Mars: Our Obsession with the Future by Hal Niedzviecki is an invaluable book that explores the pop culture of chasing tomorrow. The book reminded the reader of Alvin Toffler’s The Third Wave at first glance. Based on many social surveys, interviews of people from all walks of life, and tremendous research, the author has provided the reader with facts and provoking thoughts on technology and the future. Many unique points have been made and can be adopted by think tanks. The parts about students and schools interest the reader the most. It is surprising facts that many college students were encouraged to join tech sectors as a way of chasing the future even before they finished their degrees and that a pursuit of higher education was considered as a waste of time and money. Meanwhile many elementary school students were offered iPads as a way to prepare them ready for the future. The phenomena raise these questions: Is the ability to read and write less important than the ability to use a digital device? Is higher education less important than just learning instant lessons about technology? Can innovation really help the young generation embrace the unknown future?Using the time of Homo erectus to the civilization of Mesopotamia and the culture of the Chumash people on Southern California’s Channel Islands as evidences, the author offers his thought that “for most of human life there is little tradition of embracing chaos, of fostering the new, of empowering people to be change agents.” (P.180) It is not shocking to know that the result of the author’s focus group of university graduates that they “have grown up with every possible privilege. And yet they are confused and wounded with no idea of what is coming next,” (P. 227) as Niedzviecki concludes.The reader enjoys The End chapter of the book and admires Christy Foley for her ambition and bravery getting ready to explore Mars. The life cycle of birth and death also applies to Earth. If we humans desire to outlive the planet Earth, colonization on Mars is perhaps an excellent option.Y Generation does not have Baby Boomers’ luck, neither has gained enough life experience and establishment as X Generation has, but Y Generation doe own more future even though they face more challenge. However, standing on the shoulders of the older generations, they are living their lives, ups and downs, through the future shock era.

By RICH As he nears the conclusion of his fascinating new book, Trees on Mars, Canadian Social Commentator Hal Niedzviecki quotes the Tofflers’ seminal look ahead, “Future Shock” first published almost 50 years ago, during an age when computers were merely punch-card shuffling mechanisms used in the biggest of big business. Seen as enormously prescient as the decades advanced, the huge best-seller was STILL prescient enough to be reprinted twenty years later.To survive the future, Toffler advised, “the individual must become infinitely more adaptable and capable than ever before.” As Niedzviecki so ably demonstrates, that was then...this is now, and it is quite obvious that most of us are not “more adaptable and capable” and never will be. In fact, there’s mounting evidence to suggest that embracing the constant change of the future-obsessed is not only counter-productive to the planet (to put it mildly) but our individual, personal lives.But, you argue, you gotta take the good with the bad. However, as Niedzviecki marshals the evidence and painstakingly and imaginatively builds his case, it is clear that “good” does NOT outweigh “bad”; that whatever convenience-based good most of us enjoy comes at a huge price our societies will soon no longer be capable of paying.So, what then?Don’t be tempted to skip the middle chapters and hurry on to the author’s conclusion. Allow the author to build the evidence (both anecdotal and statistical) and then you will realize why he—and many of those he reads, talks to and corresponds with--are convinced that the imperative to “stop” what has been called “progress” is now moot. The rush to the future—to shape it, form it, make it our own--simply CANNOT be stopped. And in attempting to “embrace” the future, as the Tofflers suggested so long ago, we have, instead, become its slaves.So, what now?The author’s conclusion is a rational, logical and very human response to both the “embrace the future” or “prepare from apocalypse” alternatives so prevalent today. And the take he and others have of just HOW the future will likely unfold makes imminent sense, too. So, forget the dystopian Sci-Fi movies and TV shows (although, you might wonder why there are so many of them...)It’s early days yet, but this is likely one of the best books I will read this year . Certainly one of the most important. I recommend Trees on Mars to the angst-ridden, anxiety-prone (come on, now, ‘fess up!) iphone/ipad/computer-obsessed, future-obsessed individuals most of us have now become.

One of my top favorite non-fiction for the past 35 years By Lisianne I'm 56 now and first read this book when I was 20 and have read it many times since. I have used it for college papers and sermon-writing. What I like best: it's basically a set of case studies of how human beings have experienced religion without promoting a particular belief. It was written in the early 20th century but every bit as relevant today as it was then.

Well worth reading By MsColleen I've read James' Varieties of Religious Experience several times, and consistently find it interesting.I've been interested in comparative religious studies for decades, but especially after a crisis of faith required me to start asking "what do I believe" and "why do I believe it." I would have been well-served to discover this book during that period; James would have given me insights into my journey.One of the many insights James discusses is the difference between the "once-born" and the "twice-born." The once-born are those who have a healthy mind while the twice-born have a morbid mind. The once-born come to faith with a lightness of spirit while the twice-born come to faith with a heart filled with guilt over sin. One leads to a liberal tradition, the other to a conservative tradition.The book is a joy to read, with a comfortable style and countless examples to highlight points that James is making. I encourage anyone who is interested in comparative religious studies to read Varieties of Religious Experience. It will be time well spent.

Must Read for Spiritual Seekers By mike coleman This seminal work is required reading for anyone interested in spiritual fitness, their own and others before them. It is a studious, taxonomic, no-nonsense consideration of the phenomenon of connecting with one's higher power. Should be consumed slowly and digested for maximum benefit. James combines his own penetrating insights with many direct quotes by those who have had various kinds of mystical experiences. He concentrates on personal and private religiosity as opposed to institutionalized, or what he calls, "corporate" religion.

With God's leading, her guiding hand was also deeply involved in the establishment of a model school in Australia—a school that wrapped farming deeply into its highly successful curriculum. A hundred years have now come and gone since her death, yet the writings of this visionary woman continue, when followed, to bring much blessing to those involved. Chapter #1 begins with quotes explaining how—and why—nature is one of the most effective ways to reach human minds for God. In fact, it is even called the “key to unlocking God’s Word.” The last part of Chapter #1 explains why farming is the most consistent way to reach souls through nature. Chapter #2 covers the farm as God’s training school, and how it is one of the most effective ways to reach—and positively impact—the lives of young people. This chapter also includes information on why education close to nature is superior to spiritual growth, and how being out in—and learning about—nature is especially valuable to small children. There is also a section on the farm as a training tool for evangelists (e.g. working hard soil is not unlike dealing with hard human hearts). This chapter ends with some quotes on God’s ownership stake in school farms. Chapter #3 describes God’s original homesteading plan, starting with the Garden of Eden and going through patriarchal times. The advantages of country living for child rearing are presented, together with some dangers to children from city living, and some advice on saving money and moving to the country. There are also sections on the powerful testimony of a well-kept home and farm, how farmers can be highly effective as missionaries, and God’s economic plan for helping the poor. Ellen White’s example in helping poor families settle on the land, together as a model for godly farmers scattered as “beacons of light,” is also presented. Chapter #4 details the blessings to be obtained through farming, including character development, unseen advantages, health benefits, spiritual benefits, improved thinking ability, and financial success. Chapters #5 and #6 detail the characteristics of model schools that follow God’s plan. These quotes were drawn from the experience of Avondale, Madison College, Oakwood College, and other Adventist schools that were set-up with agriculture as a major part of the curriculum. Characteristics of such schools include that nature and the Bible were the primary textbooks, a hand-in-glove integration between education and the agricultural program, a balance between mental and physical labor, a rural or country location, every student learning a practical trade, farming superceding the love of sports and amusements, and teachers rolling up their sleeves and working right alongside the students. Other characteristics of successful model schools presented in detail in this section include self-sufficiency, obedience to God’s plan, and size of the school (small is better). There are also some interesting quotes on why some farms fail. Chapter #7 urges that there is “No Time to Lose,” offering promises of help and success alongside warnings for the results of a failure to obey.

There really is nothing innovative or unique in the book.I personally recommend the software business. It can be very lucrative if done right. It should be simple and solve a problem. A good example is Allen Wong of Rego Apps (not mentioned in the book).

I did learn some valuable information. However, I really wish there was a book that actually tells you what to sell, where to buy it & how to find it. This is not that book. It's worth the few bucks to add your collection if you're truly interested in learning to sell on amazon. As I continue my search for the perfect book, I am slowly learning that it probably doesn't exist. It will probably take months of research & pulling material from many different sources to be a successful amazon seller. I'll let you know as soon as I'm there.

I read it in about half an hour (it's only about 65 pages), but it cleared up a lot of questions I had about how to get started: what kind of business entity should I start? What about taxes? How do I find items to sell? What about distributors for private labeling? The printed copy I ordered probably could have used some more editing (several places where two words ran together), but nothing too major. If you are new or curious to/about FBA, I would highly recommend this book!

A great "how to" guide for anyone interested in eCommerce or specifically selling through Amazon's FBA program. There is so much detailed information here that I found myself a little overwhelmed. However, I think if one takes it a step at a time this book will serve you well. I still have many questions, as I think anyone new to this space would. So, I suspect my copy of Amazon FBA Decoded will be my go to source as I ramp up my operation. And a personal note: the author was kind and helpful in answering my email when I was halfway through the book and I found his words genuinely encouraging.

I'm currently doing background research for a fantasy novel, and I learned quite a lot from Goblin Tales of Lancashire. The stories are well written and quite entertaining. The only problem I found was that several of the stories are told in dialect which makes reading them a bit like slogging through mud. I ended up skipping most of those. However, that still left much to enjoy, and public domain makes this available for free, so I can't complain! All in all, a good read.

Far too many old-world models have been disrupted by change; some businesses have floundered and adapted whilst others are purposefully resilient, resilient by design in other words.Managers and company executives need to look over their business with a new critical gaze, possibly changing assumptions and once-working models and structures; trying to second-guess competitive threats, disruptive changes and really anything that can knock the business off its pedestal. Change can come very quickly: do you fancy buying a fax machine sales business? Hardly any competitors so the market could be yours… How about you think you are clever buying a year’s components up cheap from overseas whilst running a JIT model; ah, the lorry delivering your load has caught fire 50 km away from your factory. What now?This book aims to provide business leaders with an entire roadmap and strategy to help stabilise their business during potential change; it can even allow a business to embrace and benefit from the flux. As a consequence, they are unable to react to external challenges until they reach a state of crisis and require a drastic intervention. On the flip side, companies that embrace change are better positioned to identify and seize emerging opportunities more nimbly than their competitors.”This can be a bit of a specialist, esoteric read but nonetheless a worthy consideration, a strategic read if you will. Maybe your company already has its house in order, but maybe it doesn’t hurt to check in case you’ve missed a good idea or two? For those who need more extensive corporate remodelling, this book can act as a good guide to future planning.

I learned a lot about the wilds of Siberia and how the natives were 100 years ago, almost untouched by Western influence. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy travel writing.

It tells of some relevant factors that will help us in our desire to understand and analyze people. I find the book very insightful and motivating, it is geared toward a better understanding and how the readers can do this in order to comprehend the actions of the people we meet on a day to day basis. I find this book profound and very well explained.
