An unnamed narrator, estranged from his family and country, sets sail as a passenger aboard a cargo ship from Batavia (now known as Jakarta, Indonesia). Some days into the voyage, the ship is first becalmed then hit by a Simoon (a combination of a sand storm and hurricane) that capsizes the ship and sends everyone except the narrator and an old Swede overboard. Driven southward by the magical Simoon towards the South Pole, the narrator's ship eventually collides with a gigantic black galleon, and only the narrator manages to scramble aboard. Once the new ship arrives, the narrator finds outdated maps and useless navigational tools throughout the ship. Also, he finds it to be manned by elderly crewmen who are unable to see him; he steals writing materials from the captain's cabin to keep a journal (the "manuscript" of the title) which he resolves to cast into the sea. This ship too continues to be driven southward, and he notices the crew appears to show signs of hope at the prospect of their destruction as it reaches Antarctica. The ship enters a clearing in the ice where it is caught in a vast whirlpool and begins to sink into the sea.

A good, somewhat scary story By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson When the unnamed narrator of this story ships out of Batavia, he little dreams of the horrifying cruise that he is embarking on. There is a giant black galleon cruising the ocean, and where that ship is voyaging, the narrator is about to find out...whether he wants to or not. This story was one of Edgar Allan Poe’s (1809-49) first tales. It was submitted for a contest in 1833, won, and was published in the newspaper, the Baltimore Saturday Visitor. This story was read by millionaire John P. Kennedy, who subsequently helped Mr. Poe in his career. The rest, as they say, is history.Overall, I found this a good, somewhat scary story that shows the talent of E. A. Poe off to good effect. I liked this story, and highly recommend it.

"[...]proportional to developing events. Lincoln, our most striking example, grew more between 1861 and 1865 than during all the earlier years of his life. Nor is the growth of democratic leaders, when seen through the distorted passions of their day, apparently a consistent thing. Greatness, near at hand, is startlingly like inconsistency; it seems at moments to vacillate, to turn back upon and deny itself, and thus lays itself open to seemingly plausible criticism by politicians and time servers and all who cry out for precedent. Yet it is an interesting and encouraging fact that the faith of democratic peoples goes out, and goes out alone, to leaders who—whatever their minor faults and failings—do not fear to reverse themselves when occasion demands; to enunciate new doctrines, seemingly in contradiction to former assertions, to meet new crises. When a democratic leader who has given evidence of [...]"

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. An interesting piece of history (a history teacher's review) By DWD's Reviews Note: this is not written by "THE" Winston Churchill. This one was written by an American novelist and essayist with almost the same name who lived from 1871-1947. Sir Winston Churchill signed his works Winston S. Churchill in order to differentiate between the two.The essay is inspired by a 1917 visit to the battlefields of Europe during World War I.Churchill's essay is an interesting bit of history in that it appeals to old ideals of the old Progressives of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are many comments that hold to all of the hallmarks and ideals of the movement, including an obsessive faith in science and psychology (line 200) and a belief that human nature is basically good but just needs to be re-educated (line 228).He advocates a new political party based on the teachings of modern social science (line 290), a centralized economy in order to be more efficient (line 360) and he proposes that "incomes are to be taxed above the necessary cost of family maintenance (line 367) and the "progessive elimination of the private capitalist (line 368).Interestingly, he argues that the solution to all of society's ills comes from centralized economic power in the form of a democratically elected central government that will be led by people who have been properly educated with our newly-discovered scientifically-based methods that will get rid of the dangers of greedy human nature. (lines 395 & 462)This essay would be a wonderful historical document companion to Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning, a scathing look at these sorts of "Progressive" policies.

Unfortunately, it was not written by WSC, the PM, it was written by an American novelist of similar name - and the publisher should not have put a picture of WSC on the cover to fool or confuse people.

What remains for me to add except the earnest hope that this book may have the effect it is intended to produce by bringing the faithful children of the Church to think more and oftener of their departed brethren who, having passed from the Militant to the Suffering Church, are forever crying out to the living from their darksome prison—"Have pity on us, have pity on us, at least you who were our friends, have pity on us, [...]".

The Awakening and Selected Short Stories, by Kate Chopin

Review "A Creole Bovary is this little novel of Miss Chopin's."--Willa Cather

From the Inside Flap The Awakening shocked turn-of-the-century readers and reviewers with its treatment of sex and suicide.  In a departure from literary convention, Kate Chopin failed to condemn her heroine's desire for an affair with the son of a Louisiana resort owner, whom she meets on vacation.  The power of sensuality, the delusion of ecstatic love, and the solitude that accompanies the trappings of middle- and upper-class convention are themes of this now-classic novel.  The book was influenced by French writers ranging from Flaubert to Maupassant, and can be seen as a precursor of the impressionistic, mood-driven novels of Virginia Woolf and Djuna Barnes.  Variously called "vulgar," "unhealthily introspective," and "morbid," the book was neglected for several decades, not least because it was written by a "regional" woman writer.  This edition also includes selected stories from Kate Chopin's Bayou Folk and A Night in Acadie, and an introduction and notes by Nina Baym.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Far ahead of her time By J. Jacobs Stories include: (Wiser Than a god, A Point at Issue!, A Shameful Affair, Miss McEnders, At the 'Cadian Ball, Desiree's baby, Madame Celestin's Divorce, A Lady of Bayou St. John, La Belle Zoraide A Respectable Woman, The Story of an Hour, Regret, The Kiss, Athenaise, A Pair of Silk Stockings, The Storm, Charlie). Some of the short stories seem repetitive, but The Awakening is wonderful, especially considering when it was written and how much Chopin went through as a result of publishing this scandalous tale. She tells the story of a woman realizing her sexuality and the feminist ideas she conveys are far ahead of her time.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. a counterpoint to the last review By A Customer I got turned on to KC in college through one story--The Storm--and a little background on her (she wrote ahead of her time, was published and then forgotten until the 1960's Feminist Movement dug her up again). She became one of those authors I lodge in the back of my head to investigate later. I happened upon this wonderful book at the book tent at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest and grabbed it. The book gives a great introduction to her and her time. I was lucky enough to read The Awakening and some of her other short stories while staying at Grand Isle. She was and is a great writer. She wrote from a viewpoint that bucked the norms of her time---the late 1800's, she wrote of women who didnt fit the mold of mommy and wife. She wrote eloquently of an area, era, and culture that I love...New Orleans, Cajun Country, and Grand Isle amongst others. I dont write many reviews, but after reading the only other review for this book I felt a different opinion should be heard. She is a good read.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Worth reading (The Awakening) By A Customer This book is certainly not for the illiterate dime novel crowd. It is a story of one woman's struggle to find herself within the narrow confines of Victorian society. The situations and characters are well developed and some literacy in French is helpful but not required. If you read a bit about Kate Chopin the main character seems to be fairly autobiographical at least where rebellion from female conformity was concerned. The book is not a new idea, a person finding their wings and learning to fly. But the idea of a female doing this in Victorian society was brand new. The book was considered obscene and subversive at the time and that alone makes it worth reading.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A fine beginning gradually peters out By Bomojaz There's nothing like a truly evil character in a novel to get a reader's juices flowing, and in Edmund Melrose Mrs. Ward really created one. A miserly, dismal man, whose only interest in life is collecting art works, most of which he never even uncrates, he divorces his wife after she escapes (with their daughter Felicia) his cold, unfeeling ways with a valuable statuette and returns to Italy. Claude Faversham happens along by accident (literally) one day and is hired by Melrose as his land agent - after Melrose learns that Faversham owns rare jewels that he inherited. Faversham tries to help the tenants of the Melrose estate, but Melrose refuses to give any money to them. When Melrose later drowns, Faversham is thought to be his murderer. All throughout these proceedings the love between Lydia Penfold and Faversham blossoms, in fits and starts, until, by a rather far-fetched coincidence, Faversham is proved innocent of Melrose's murder. Everything turns out perfectly at the end between Lydia and Faversham after he gives his inheritance to Felicia and the Melrose mansion becomes an art museum. That's the chief fault with the book: Mrs. Ward, like a good puppet master, controls the circumstances of the story too carefully to make them seem natural. The first half of the novel is excellent, but the last half disappoints. Nothing Mrs. Ward wrote is totally worthless, but this briskly written novel is not among her very best.

Because of that, little hands might need a little help with holding/turning pages. Approximately every other page is cut-out around the edges in various shapes which was an interesting feature- though it almost acts as a "before and after" more than anything else. The story is simple and sweet. Spot decides to bring a branch of berries to his friend Arlo. To do that though, he has to pass through a string of other animals who also love berries- so he loses a few each page. By the end, though only one berry remains, we see that it really is the thought that counts and Arlo appreciates the valiant effort his friend Spot has made to bring him a sweet snack. As far as the story goes, I preferred A Mouse So Small which is a pretty similar story but has a bit more substance to it. However, this one has the HUGE advantage of being a Disney/Pixar book so kids will love that it has their favorite characters from the movie The Good Dinosaur.

"[...]implements of husbandry or household use for the estate are made, and at the latter all the rice barrels necessary for the crop, besides tubs and buckets large and small for the use of the people, and cedar tubs of noble dimensions and exceedingly neat workmanship, for our own household purposes. The fragrance of these when they are first made, as well as their ample size, renders them preferable as dressing-room furniture, in my opinion, to all the china foot-tubs that ever came out of Staffordshire. After this I got out of the vicinity of the settlement, and pursued my way along a narrow dyke—the river on one hand, and on the other a slimy, poisonous-looking swamp, all rattling with sedges of enormous height, in which one might lose one's way as effectually as in a forest of oaks. Beyond this, the low rice-fields, all clothed in their rugged stubble, divided by[...]".

By Kersi Von Zerububbel I purchased this book from Amazon in September but just managed to finish it this weekend. Why the delay? The book is a hard and melancholic read. In page after page Fanny Kemble narrates the abomination and sheer evil of slavery. We are introduced to folks who pious in their ways and beliefs show absolutely no compassion or outrage towards sanctioned barbarism. There is the case of one little girl who cannot conceive or imagine the notion that she can be a free woman. Then there is the sanctimonious Mr. Butler who is supposed to be a "good massa" to the chattel that is his property. I cannot begin to chronicle the innumerable injustices done to fellow humans. But then in the midst of this filth there is a bright shinning light. That light is Fanny. This brave and intellignet lady fought against big odds to somewhat improve the plight of the slaves on her husband's plantation. Often not taken seriously, or worse treated condescendingly, Fanny nevertheless kept at it.The first five chapters are a delight to read. They narrate her journey to the plantation along with her experiences at stops along the way. But from then on be prepared for a long sad book. This is an important book that deserves your attention. The next time I visit one of those beautiful antebellum mansions with the aroma of magnolia's in the air I will remember the cost of human lives wasted. I will remember Fanny.

In a time, circumstance, and place which precluded her following her life's dream, she settled down into marriage with Pierce Butler, who had adamantly and ardently pursued her hand. She left a very successful career as an actress and gave up, for a time and at her husband's request, her ambition and even her beliefs. She strove to make this marriage work and to "save her husband's soul," when she discovered, after the marriage, the actual source of her husband's family's income, the rice plantations that lay in Georgia. They had two children together before she finally persuaded him to allow her to visit his Georgia rice plantations, where hundreds of negro slaves labored to support the family's wealthy lifestyle in New England. Fanny's heartfelt pleas to free the negroes not only fell on her husband's deaf ears, but he eventually forbade her to even tell him of their plight, and even went so far as to forbid her to continue the practice of helping out in their infirmary. Still, the slaves of her husband's two plantations temporarily benefitted from her visit, which must have been like a ray of light in a very dark existence. The stories speak for themselves, and Fanny makes it her duty to record every one in the slaves' own voices. This book affected me deeply, especially when I read of Fanny's eventual unhappy divorce from her husband, whom she still loved, and her enforced separation from her children. Scholarly reading for every student of the nineteenth century, in the subjects of enslavement, the plight of married women, and general attitudes toward women and slavery by men in power and the common people.

A drop of kindness in an ocean of misery By Cinda Cyrus Imagine that you are an educated, early-19th century British woman who marries a cultured, wealthy, charming Philadelphia bluestocking and lives a happy and refined life and has two daughters and THEN you learn that your husband's great wealth, passed down through generations, comes from several slave plantations in Georgia. Next imagine that your husband, who wants to check out his property, takes you and the girls to Georgia for a few months. The trip to Georgia is, to the modern eye, a nightmare, but I think it probably represents the travel experience of the time. This journey, however, is as nothing compared to the 4 or so months spent on the various Butler plantations. This book is not so much a journal, per se, as a collection of letters Fanny wrote to her friend Margaret, describing the land, customs, food, daily life, etc., of the plantations. But above all what Fanny reports on is slavery. She is horrified at what she sees all around her, and with the eye of a documentary filmmaker she records what she learns and experiences---the work in the fields, the diet, the family structure, the economics of the plantation system, the clothing, the illnesses and injuries, the medical care, the conversations, the rewards and punishments. Fanny can't escape from her belief that the Butler slaves are human beings, and the slaves, responding to the tiniest drop of Fanny's kindness in their great ocean of misery, quickly come to believe she is an angel sent by God.Fanny's letters fueled the flames of the antislavery movement both in the U.S. and in England. Articulate and highly descriptive, her writings were widely published. This is a can't-put-it-down book--------even if you think you know all about the evils of slavery. Highly, highly recommended.

Vivid, bold and brisk, Internet Wars traces one of the most critical emerging power struggles of the 21st century, the battle to control the internet. Already exploitation of this super-network has helped create the world's most valuable company, toppled governments, led to the largest wealth transfer in history, and created the most extensive global surveillance system ever known. Google's Eric Schmidt described the internet as 'the first thing that humanity has built that humanity doesn't understand'. Yet only by understanding the broad currents of the internet's growth will we be able to secure its vitality and promise into the future. Internet Wars is a call to action for a more informed debate about a contest that will profoundly affect us all for generations to come. '... thoughtfully portrays how power structures are being twisted, bent and broken by people and institutions who are Internet-smart' - Alec Ross, Senior Advisor for Innovation to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

It leaves you realising the world is a long way from dealing with these, but urgently needs to start a discussion about how to address them.

By Lauren This book is an absolute must-read!Internet Wars is an insightful and thought-provoking examination of the ways the internet is rapidly changing our society. The writing is breezy and engaging and packed full of memorable stories.Hanson shows how the internet is irrevocably changing global power structures; transforming civil society; shifting the balance in international relations and national politics; and creating new economic titans.Hanson also shows how far behind we are in understanding the implications of these changes and asks important questions about how we should guide the future of the internet.Chapter 3 in particular is a compelling read about state power, covering the arab spring, cyber warfare and unparalleled state-sponsored corporate espionage.

‘Trees are wildlife just as deer or primroses are wildlife. Each species has its own agenda and its own interactions with human activities …’

Written by one of Britain’s best-known naturalists, Woodlands offers a fascinating new insight into the trees of the British landscape that have filled us with awe and inspiration throughout the centuries.

Looking at such diverse evidence as the woods used in buildings and ships, and how woodland has been portrayed in pictures and photographs, Rackham traces British woodland through the ages, from the evolution of wildwood, through man’s effect on the landscape, modern forestry and its legacy, and recent conservation efforts and their effects.

In his lively and thoroughly engaging style, Rackham explores woodlands and their history, through names, surveys, mapping and legal documents, archaeology, photographs and works of art, thus offering an utterly compelling insight into British woodlands and how they have come to shape a national obsession.

Woodlands, by Oliver Rackham

Review

‘Rackham has been a great champion for real woods and against the endless postwar conifer plantations – a campaign now largely won. Here he is writing not as a conservationist, but simply to share his prodigious knowledge of woods and trees with the reader.’The Times

‘… A magnificent compendium of evocations, celebrations and warnings – the harvest of a long lifetime, gathered slowly but with unflagging passion.’Guardian

‘The Woodland Trust welcomes Oliver Rackham’s latest book celebrating the glories of our irreplaceable ancient woodland heritage. Restoration of ancient woods and creation of new woods is vital to creating a countryside which is more sympathetic to woodland wildlife, and which delivers benefits to society.’Woodland Trust

‘Magnificent, masterful … For those of us who worship trees, Rackham is our (slightly grumpy) High Druid. A true classic.’The Week

About the Author

Oliver Rackham, OBE (1939–2015) was a leading historian and ecologist of British woodlands and the landscape. He wrote various books on trees and woodland, including the bestselling The History of the Countryside (1986) and The Ash Tree (2014). Oliver’s discoveries about past practices informed present-day woodland management, and he was heavily involved in conservation efforts. In 1964, he was elected a fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and appointed a University Demonstrator in the Department of Botany. He remained a fellow of Corpus for the rest of his life, and in 2006 became an honorary professor. He is considered to have been the first scholar to explore woods from a variety of different perspectives – ecology, archaeology, timbers, place names, manuscript records – in order to recreate a wood’s history, and was widely admired for his unique and accessible writing style, all of which has been beautifully captured in his last great work, Woodlands, first published in 2006.

If you grow trees, think about growing trees, do research on trees- you absolutely must own this book.I will confess I have not read the entire thing. Because? I'm terrified at this point to pick it up- the information is so dense; so well presented, so incredibly thorough, so totally integrated with history, anthropology, and everything- if I once start reading, I'm likely to not put it down for an hour; or two; no matter how urgent my other chores are.You will not only learn an astonishing amount- you will learn there are things to learn you never imagined. At this point I dream of meeting the author, and having a week to talk. There are a few things we don't agree on- and I would so totally love to hear his thoughts. I don't think anyone else alive knows as much about the biology and history of trees and wood in Europe as Rackham.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable short stories with a twist By Jim D. This is a series of short stories taken from different walks of life all ending with a twist similar to what you would expect from reading O. Henry. The author provides the background that places you at the scene of activity; and at the conclusion, requires that moment of thought as human nature unfolds in an unexpected manner. Well worth reading. As a side point, the volunteer committee did an excellent job in consolidating and re-editing this book for publication.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. No twist in these tales By glyn As usual, excellent writing from Edith Wharton. But most of these short stories ended abruptly - there was not a twist to be had as in the O. Henry style that one of the reviewers suggested. Still, worth a read though don't get too involved with the plot because, much as you assume the tale will continue in the next chapter, you will simply find that the new chapter begins an entirely new story altogether. Live with it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wharton but not at her finest By dreaming of the sun If you're a huge Wharton fan like I am then you've probably read all her books. This was the last book by her standing for me and I have to say that while it's okay, that's it. It's just okay. Yes it's supernatural tales by the Queen of Writing (in my opinion) but she could have done better. Sad that she didn't.

"[...]first hearing was not very different from English. It was only when I had tangled myself up in a hopeless maze of small wooden houses, dust, street refuse, and children who played with empty kerosene tins, that I discovered the difference of speech. "You want to go to the Palace Hotel?" said an affable youth on a dray. "What in hell are you doing here, then? This is about the lowest ward in the city. Go six blocks north to corner of Geary and Markey, then walk around till you strike corner of Gutter and Sixteenth, and that brings you there." I do not vouch for the literal accuracy of these directions, quoting but from a disordered memory. "Amen," I said. "But who am I that I should strike the corners of such as you name? Peradventure they be gentlemen of repute, and might hit back. Bring it down to dots, my son." I thought he would have smitten me, but he didn't. He explained that no one ever used the word "street," and that every one was supposed to know how the streets ran, for sometimes the names were upon the lamps and sometimes they weren't. Fortified with these directions, I proceeded till I found a mighty street, full of sumptuous buildings four and five stories high, but paved with rude[...]".

Excellent piece of history By Seth Davidson By the time Dickens made his first trip to the U.S., he had already achieved extraordinary fame, having completed The Pickwick Papers, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, and Barnaby Rudge. He was 30, and at the peak of his energy, if not yet at the height of his literary powers.American Notes has a few passages that qualify as some of Dickens's very best. It's worth reading just for his account of the Atlantic passage, as the combination of humor, terror, and blunt-trauma reality of sailing across the Atlantic in a wooden ship is one of the finest pieces of nautical writing ever done.American Notes is exactly what the title suggests: a compilation of disconnected observations that are loosely tied together by what is ostensibly a fact finding mission to learn about progressive institutions such as prisons and homes for the handicapped. These jottings come to fruition in a full blown novel when Dickens writes Martin Chuzzlewit.By itself, American Notes is a brilliant journal of how the U.S. appeared to a liberal Englishman in the middle of the 19th Century. Dickens's comments on slavery, on the lives of African-Americans in New York, on the prairie, and on spitting are as interesting and occasionally funny to read today as they must have been 160 years ago. The best thing about American Notes is that you can buy it as part of the 200+ Works of Charles Dickens collection for your Kindle, and sample as much or as little of it as strikes your fancy.

PFAUTZ This is Charles Dickens' unvarnished view of America in 1842 when our Revolution was less than 70 years old. For six months he toured the northeastern states, venturing as far west as Cincinnati and south to Richmond, while collecting observations of American folkways that he lampooned in typical Dickens fashion. His descriptions of Washington D.C. and its lawmakers should not be missed and are prescient of what would be Mark Twain's satiric sense. Referencing Washington's street design of boulevards and avenues Dickens related that it was often referred to as the "City of Magnificent Distances", but Dickens thought "City of Magnificent Intentions" might be a better descriptor - perhaps still a figurative portrayal for our time.Dickens pulls no punches in his account of a country mired in the slavery controversy between Free States and Slave States, and additionally describes the dismal situation in American prisons and asylums. For me it was most difficult to assimilate the Slavery chapter which included American newspaper clippings of slave sales and "Runaway Slave" classifieds - truly a sad report on the pre-Civil War United States.Reading this as an historical document I strongly recommend the Kindle version so you can utilize the e-dictionary and Internet as you experience Dickens vivid command of the English language in this remarkable journey.

I found it eye opening of American cities and their beginnings, and of Charles Dickens' opinion of places, compared to England. The boat and train rides would have been tough to endure, The atrocities he saw of the Black Slaves, and his sympathies toward them was, as always to me, appalling. He saw so much in his travels, some were very humorous, but his descriptions were very vivid.

By Starmar I have a Master Degree in Business and I'm always looking, researching and studying important topics that can help me in my improvement. One of my interests was to receive my ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) foundations certification. I listened to the "ITIL: For Beginners" audiobook version and it was easy to understand, very informative and an useful learning tool. I have always found this practice very complicated but this audiobook is helping me now to understand the process related with ITIL. Now a days is so important learning about ITIL practices because are designed to help companies identify areas where they need improvement, providing guidelines and methods on where to make specific changes to reduce costs and increase productivity. Without this knowledge you can not position your business to success.I believe this book is an excellent study guide for people who do not have time, like me, to complete a course and need to study at their own pace. It covers all the topics you need to know about ITIL and is a good resource for the ones who need to be prepare for the exam. I received this complimentary audiobook in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion and I highly recommend it!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive Review of ITIL For IT Professionals By mjtwny ITIL For Beginners is exactly that, a book that will take you from no background knowledge to a basic understanding of the subject. ITIL is an acronym for Information Technology Infrastructure Library. The goal being to more directly link the IT of a company to the needs of the people in the company and the customers of that company. ITIL focuses on service, the current five volumes are ITIL Service Strategy, ITIL Service Design, ITIL Service Transition, ITIL Service Operation and ITIL Continual Service Improvement.I myself work in IT, for those that already do, this gives some background of how things should work but you won't pick up anything earth shattering here. If you pick this up with the intent of breezing through it and getting certified, well good luck to you, I'd say that your chances of that are slim without any other experience or study/reference sources. Not impossible, just a stretch.Be aware that this is no light read, you had better be invested in the subject matter or you won't make it past the first onslaught of acronyms (and there's a small army of those to commit to memory). It is very comprehensive in covering all the topics (training, testing, monitoring, reporting, risk management, etc) , some more indepth than others, but enough on all fronts to give you a clear understanding. If you come into this book with some basic IT knowledge and experience then you shouldn't have any trouble with this book and it would provide an excellent resource for certification review. If you come in with no experience and hope to just cram the information from this book into you head and take the exam, think again. I ploughed through this in 4 days and used the ITIL Mind Map and I passed the test with a score of 31 on the first try. I recommended this to others at work.

The Secret House, by Edgar Wallace

About the Author Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born illegitimately in Greenwich, London, in 1875 to actors Mary Jane Richards and T.H. Edgar. As an infant he was adopted by George Freeman, a porter at Billingsgate fish market. Aged eleven, Wallace sold newspapers at Ludgate Circus and upon leaving school took a job with a printer. He later enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, before transferring to the Medical Staff Corps, and was sent to South Africa. In 1898, he published a collection of poems called 'The Mission that Failed', and subsequently left the army to become correspondent for Reuters. South African war correspondent for 'The Daily Mail' followed and his articles were later published as 'Unofficial Dispatches'. His outspokenness infuriated Lord Kitchener, who removed his credentials. He then edited the 'Rand Daily Mail', but gambled disastrously on the South African Stock Market. Returning to England, Wallace at first reported on crimes and hanging trials, before becoming editor of 'The Evening News'. It was in 1905 that he founded the Tallis Press, publishing 'Smithy', a collection of soldier stories, and 'The Four Just Men'. The latter was published with the ending removed as an advertising stunt and he offered oe500 to readers who could successfully guess the ending. Unfortunately, many did and he was almost bankrupted. At various times Wallace also worked as a journalist on 'The Standard', 'The Star', 'The Week-End Racing Supplement' and 'The Story Journal'. In 1917, he became a Special Constable at Lincoln's Inn and also a special interrogator for the War Office. The Daily Mail sent Wallace to investigate atrocities in the Belgian Congo, a trip that provided material for his 'Sanders of the River' books. In 1923, he became Chairman of the Press Club and in 1931 stood as a Liberal Parliamentary candidate for Blackpool. Wallace's first marriage in 1901 to Ivy Caldecott, daughter of a missionary, ended in divorce in 1918 and he later married his much younger secretary, Violet King. Along with countless articles, some 23 screenplays and many short stories, Wallace wrote more than 170 books, which have been translated into 28 languages and sales of which have exceeded 50 million copies. Over 160 films have been made from his books - more than any other author. In the 1920's one of Wallace's many publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. His sales were exceeded only by 'The Bible'. He died in 1932 whilst working on the screenplay for 'King Kong', having moved to Hollywood after being offered a contract by RKO.

If you like mysteries, it is an easy recommendation. This isn't the same detective as in The Clue of the Twisted Candle, but I kept confusing them. Considering how close the names were, and the references to not always obeying the law, perhaps they should have been the same person. This is a story of blackmail, murder and the love of a man for his niece. The Secret House itself is a bit implausible, but that's one of the points of fiction! Adding to my free Kindle mystery list for certain.

Twists and Turns By me I read this book upon the recommendation of a friend.Never having heard of this writer before, I was kind of surprised at just how much I enjoyed it. There are twists and turns, some of which you see coming but others that are just totally wild.I did enjoy the Secret House and really wonder just how this may have been accepted during the time it was wrote. Today many of these things would be normal, but back then I would think they would be a bit Sci-Fi.Truly enjoyable--I'll download a bunch more onto my Kindle.

It has murder, blackmail and a decent amount of suspense. Towards the end of the book you kind of know where the author is heading but it is still a fun read.

Discover North America's wild coastal corridor--from the Baja Peninsula to the Beaufort Sea--just offshore along the Pacific Edge. The Wild Edge: Freedom to Roam the Pacific Coast reveals the great Pacific seam of North America that knits together land and sea, ocean and continent in a tumble of interrelated life. From the Baja Peninsula through the coves and breaks of California and the bays and inlets of the Pacific Northwest, to the deep forests of British Columbia and the icy realm of polar bears in the Beaufort Sea of Alaska, the west coast of North America provides a life-sustaining corridor of great energy. Through vivid imagery, stories, and science, The Wild Edge reveals how the health and livelihood of a distant Inupiaq Eskimo whaler is related to a suburban family in Los Angeles enamored with the pod of whales passing by their city beach. Through extraordinary photographs, Schulz contrasts this astonishing beauty with the threats from degradation and runaway development.

Florian works hard to get his images and it shows. He has an incredible eye and he really knows his subjects. The images are fantastic and his stories are great as well. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys great nature photography as well as anyone with a love of the outdoors. You will not be disappointed.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Be aware... the drawings in this book are not in color By A.J. This product is not exactly as depicted. When you "LOOK INSIDE!", the drawings are in color. In fact, in the book, they are black and white and poorly copied. I am contemplating returning this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. One Star By quality123 Very disappointing. Blurry picture on the outside, NO PICTURES on the inside. Not what I expected.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful colorful stories with plots that will spark imagination By New York Mama I was delighted by these stories. They captivated my imagination as I read them to my 5 year old daughter, and 2 year old son. My children didn't want me to stop reading. The illustrations in my copy are in color (1993). The language and illustrations are lovely. Some of the themes are about friendship, confidence to lead, and courage to help another in need. The endearing characters, the dolls and play things, of this book will win your heart. I think it is timeless and should be read to this generation.
