By Jim Schmidt I can;t belive I'm giving a Dickens book 3 stars, but there it is...it's the last volume of his "Christmas canon"...darker than A Christmas Carol...one thing I didn;t like about it is that there is precious little *Christmas* in it, except for him to write the word a few times...it could (almost) be as easily set in June as December...there are some flashes of genius: his characterization of the elder Swidger is wonderful...and the scenes of the Tetterby children are great comedy...and the kindness of Milly Swidger who provides the lesson:"May I tell you why it seems to me a good thing for us, to remember wrong that has been done us?""Yes.""That we may forgive it."But the rest of the story just isn;t enough to make it a favorite of mine.
