"[...]forest looked quite low and dim across it. Our guide told us that boats could go from there to our camp—but "long way—all day." This water was somewhat clearer than that we had left, but we could not judge well from the margin. We skirted it for another half hour or so, the ground growing firmer as we advanced, and presently we turned the corner of a wooded promontory and saw a quite different country—a sudden view of mountains, steep and bare. "One of those long easterly spurs," Terry said appraisingly. "May be hundreds of miles from the range. They crop out like that." Suddenly we left the lake and struck directly toward the cliffs. We heard running water before we reached it, and the guide pointed proudly to his river. It was short. We could see where it poured down a narrow vertical cataract from an opening in the face of the cliff. It was sweet water. The guide drank eagerly and so did we. "That's snow water," Terry announced. "Must come from way back in the hills." But as to being red and blue—it was greenish in tint. The guide seemed not at all surprised. He hunted about a little and showed us a quiet marginal pool[...]".

Herland, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

About the Author Charlotte Perkins Gilman (Hartford, Connecticut, July 3, 1860 – August 17, 1935) was an American feminist, sociologist, novelist, writer of short stories, poetry, and nonfiction, and a lecturer for social reform. She was an utopian feminist during a time when her kind of accomplishments were exceptional for women. Her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle served as a role model for future generations of feminists. Gilman married artist Charles Stetson in 1884. The couple had a daughter named Katherine. Sometime during her decade-long marriage to Stetson, Gilman experienced a severe depression and underwent a series of unusual treatments for it. This experience is believed to have inspired her best-known short story "The Yellow Wall-Paper" (1892). In 1900, Gilman had married for the second time. She wed her cousin George Gilman, and the two stayed together until his death in 1934. One of her greatest works of non-fiction, Women and Economics, was published in 1898. Along with writing books, she established a magazine, The Forerunner, which was published from 1909 to 1916. In 1935, she discovered that she had inoperable breast cancer. Charlotte Perkins Gilman committed suicide on August 17, 1935.

GREAT IDEAS to make more money on your RE outside the standard "box" - truly new money-making ideas By J This book is a great inventory of ways you have probably never thought to make money on your real estate before. This isn't "raise rents" and insulate your hot water pipes. From leveraging the "sharing" economy, implementing other small business or advertising into your real estate, working with tenants to generate additional income for everyone, and even using your building as a re-broadcasting tool - there is something for every real estate owner in this book. The formatting with step-by-step analysis of each potential revenue source provides a clearer guide of how to approach each potential new stream of income. The author personally gave me a suggestion about adding bicycles to my Airbnb unit, and here's a recent message and a review from 2 booked guests:"The bikes as an option was definitely the cherry on top for us." - Ryan, Florida; April 2015"The bikes were also a wonderful way of getting around and checking out the area, which has lots of cute..." Courtney, TX, March 2015That's more bookings, better reviews, and more income! One weekend stay like this pays for the bikes in their entirety. And they are not the first! Even the guests that don't use them appreciate they are there. Thanks for the advice and inspiration Al Williamson!

Rental Property, Landlord, Rental Properties By Russ in Elk Grove This book is a quick read because you can glance at an idea and know immediately if that idea might be appropriate for your situation. Some ideas will work in high cost housing, others in low cost housing. Some will work if your clientele are college students, or millennials, or older folks. This book explains the situations where an idea has promise, and then tells you what you should expect to invest (time and money).I appreciated that he covers what the unintended benefits (increase property value) and the possible problems (do I need a permit or insurance to do this?). Some ideas can turn a problem (insufficient parking) into a profit stream (operating a shared car service that attracts tenants who do not want to own their own cars.I also like the step-by-step how-to-get-started list at the end of each section.Bottom line - if you own residential rental property, several of these 40 ideas are things that you can turn into profit streams. The rest of them will stimulate you to look at your property in different ways and perhaps come up with a few ideas of your own.

This book is on a different vein, but is as equally helpful. The book focuses on how to generate ancillary, or non-rent income from investment properties, as a strategy to increase profit without increasing number of properties or debt load. I love that he uses the term collaborative economy to point out that we can partner with others, including tenants, to raise the income of both parties. It takes creative thinking, which this book starts to prime those creative thoughts.I appreciated the format of one summary page for each income generating idea. It forced me to slow down and really ponder if that strategy had any applicability to my rental investments. Al gives a lot of useful information in these summaries, but one of my favorite is identifying some nontangible benefits.

Make It Matter: How Managers Can Motivate by Creating Meaning, by Scott Mautz

Review Make It Matter has been named a "Best Book of 2015" by Soundview BusinessBooks!

“…outstanding job discussing why 70% of today's workforce is completely disengaged from their job responsibilities and what you can do to overcome this issue in your organization.” --Soundview

“Make It Matter is the antidote to crisis levels of disengagement and absence of meaning at work.” --Leadership & Management Books

From the Author What a journey.  As I've told many, Make It Matter was not written by sitting back in my office and musing, "I wonder what truly motivates workers?" The book is based on 6 years of intense research.  Scores of sociological, psychological, and organizational behavior studies from top universities, interviews with many top level executives (as well as mid-level and frontline workers across a range of great companies to work for), case studies, stories, thousands of discussions from over a decade and a half of keynote and consulting experience, and statistical modeling that incoporates millions of employee data points gathered in a massive workplace performance study.  No, this was not written lightly.  But I hope you'll find it a sprite read.  I'm onto something, and it can't wait.

From the Inside Flap

“Rarely does a book come along this thought-provoking. Scott Mautz has rewritten the rules on how to motivate and elevate your people and their performance—in a manner that sustains. This book matters.” —Linda Kaplan Thaler, chairman of Publicis Kaplan Thaler, and bestselling co-author of The Power of Nice and Grit to Great

Are your people giving in instead of giving their all? Have they quit, but stayed? Probably. According to a shocking Gallup poll, more than 7 out of 10 American workers are disengaged, which hurts productivity, products, and personal satisfaction. In fact, 1 in 5 are more committed to not doing their jobs than to doing them, and you probably just thought of that one person on your team.

In Make It Matter, Scott Mautz shows that the key to winning back the disengaged (and keeping the engaged, engaged) is by fostering meaning at work, that is, by giving work a greater sense of personal significance and, thus, making work matter. Distilling reams of research, case studies, stories, and interviews with managers at great companies to work for, he unveils seven essential “Markers of Meaning” that can be triggered to create meaning in and at work. You’ll learn about the power of:

Direction: Reframe work to add meaning and motivation, and help people discover a sense of significance and purpose in what they do.

Discovery: Craft the richest kind of opportunities to learn, grow, and influence, while helping people feel valued and valuable.

Devotion: Cultivate an authentic, caring culture, master meaning-making leadership behaviors, and drive out corrosive behaviors that can quietly and unknowingly drain meaning at work.

He offers you dozens of tools and specific plans to get your people to better commit and enjoy work as part of their lives, not an 8-hour departure from it. He also demonstrates how meaning starts with managers because if you’re not committed, no one else will be either. Most important, he draws a solid line from elevated meaning to higher profits, revenue growth, and retention.

A manager’s greatest role is to create an environment where the business and employees can thrive, not just survive. When you help your people find meaning in what they do and feel that what they do matters, they give their all. Channel that power, and everyone profits.

Scott Mautz is a 20+ year veteran of Procter & Gamble, having run several thriving, multi-billion dollar divisions along the way. He’s also a speaker and consultant on many facets of meaning-making leadership.

By Jason Duff It’s easy to keep the complex things complex and the simple things simple; it is quite another to transforms 200+ academic studies, articles, and interviews into a simple and enjoyable narrative. That’s a hallmark trait of Malcolm Gladwell, who as it turns out, has been writing like Scott Mautz all this time. Gladwell has the ‘10,000 Hour Rule’ and the ‘Broken Window Theory’, Mautz has ‘Markers of Meaning’ and ‘3C Goals’. Both authors give the reader an easy way to understand and remember complex concepts.Another Gladwellian trait present throughout the book is the use of engaging stories to illustrate a point. For example, what leadership lesson can you learn from clown school? I’ll let you find that one out yourself. But while Gladwell’s books give you plenty of conversation starters for cocktail parties, it’s not always clear how to transform the knowledge into action. This is one area where Make it Matter (thankfully) deviates from Gladwell’s style. Mautz takes great care to demonstrate how you can start to live out these lessons as soon as you put the book down.So if you’re interested in becoming a meaning-making manager, and enjoy books like The Tipping Point and Blink, I recommend you read Make it Matter.

Liked The Theory, But The Content is Thin and Non-Actionable By Opinionated I like the concept of making work more meaningful for myself and my team, but I found this book to be a fairly poor guide. Other's compared it to Malcolm Gladwell, but I disagree very much. Rather than being engaging, this book read like a compendium of all generic management thoughts and theories published in the last 50 years. I kept thinking I was reading a graduate school dissertation. The book is full of ultra-brief descriptions of scientific studies and narrow anecdotes, lacking any real or actionable advice. One example.Page 46. Discussing the "Potency of Purpose", Mautz lays out 6 Steps on the Path to Purpose. Step #2, "Ask the Right Questions". After explaining that we shouldn't focus on our individual performance or perception (I couldn't agree more) comes this gem:"So where to start? We begin with Michelangelo.... Michelangelo described the approach he took in creating his breathtaking sculptures. He called it a process of taking away, not adding on...He'd carve away everything the statue truly wasn't, chiseling away all the debris and all the distractions to free the beauty that had always lain deep inside the confines of the marble rock. And so it is with us on the Path to Purpose...."What?So if you like over-generalized scientific findings packaged in a very safe, generic, non specific way, this book is for you.

Feria I like how it empowers the individual with tools and principles to improve his/her organization and inject more meaning and happiness into the workplace. It's both a refreshing and a completely different point of view versus other books on the subject I have read. The advice is easy to digest, understand and implement.I have personally seen these principles work in action, since I worked in Scott Mautz's organization for many years. He took a rigid and process-obsessed culture and injected meaning, the concept of leaving a legacy and eliminated complexity that enabled his people to deliver amazing results and have fun while doing it. His philosophy works to the extent that I still run into other people that worked in his organization and they, to the person, recount the time as one of the best in their career - due to the quality of the relationships that were built and the barrier-busting process that was utilized. Those philosophies, along with advice and examples from other illustrious leaders in the industry, makes this book into a leadership powerhouse and a must-read for anyone wishing to derive more meaning from their work.

"[...]Moussa, ruled this land. Their court was made up of untamed horses. Horses that had never known restraining bit or binding saddlestrap. Happy, carefree horses they were, that had never seen men nor known men's inventions. Sylvan had won the right to rule his followers by might and courage. He was the fleetest of foot, the quickest of eye, the greatest of strength. Sylvan, the King! Then Moussa bore the king a son—a prince—and Sylvan's happiness was complete. His fleet hoofs pounded the turf, racing, turning, flashing a white coat in the bright sun. He hoped his little son would see his strength, his speed, and emulate them. Less than two hours after his birth, the prince was trying his slim, straight legs. In the months that followed, the white colt developed the strength and fearlessness of Sylvan. Added to these were the gentleness, grace, and beauty of Moussa. For many weeks the prince of Wild Horse Valley stayed close to his mother's side, and his little shadow merged with hers as the two moved through the valley, guided by Sylvan, who knew where water was sweetest and grass most tender. Then came the days when colthood was left behind, and the son could outrun Moussa and keep pace with mighty Sylvan. Like the wind,[...]".

About the Author Francis Hamilton Striker was born on August 19, 1903, in Buffalo, New York. While in Buffalo, he attended Lafayette High School and the University of Buffalo, before dropping out to join a theater company in New York City. After that, he jumped back to Buffalo as a radio announcer, then to Cleveland, back to Buffalo and out to Detroit. It was during this period that he began writing radio mysteries and westerns. In 1932, Striker began work on “The Lone Ranger,” writing as many as 156 scripts per year. When that became hugely popular, he followed up with “The Green Hornet,” which featured a descendent of the Lone Ranger and “Sergeant Preston of the Ukon.” Due to the popularity of the subject, Striker began writing Lone Ranger novels, comic strips and movie serials. As television began to grow into a more popular medium and radio serials began to fade, Striker began writing the scripts for “The Lone Ranger” TV show. While moving with his wife and children on September 4, 1962, he was killed in an automobile accident, at the age of 59, in Elma, New York. He is buried in Arcade Rural Cemetery in Arcade, New York.

By Big D This story of the Lone Ranger saga is one of the best written of all Fran Striker's books on the masked man...not up to Vince Flynn or Nelson DeMille, but it has many twists and turns that keep you guessing right up to the very end..or near the end, at least...We know how all Lone Ranger stories end" "Hi-Yo Silver, Away..."The book starts at the beginning of the legend but tells the story in a new and different way. The basics are there, of course, but there's much more character development, especially among the Canvandishes.Good stuff...very good stuff here...A complete anthology of all-things Lone Ranger at the makes this book especially interesting and worthwhile...for example, did you know that the Green Hornet, another Striker creation, was the Lone Ranger's great nephew? The Hornet was the son of Dan Reid, the Lone Ranger's nephew...this and many other such treasure are found in this book, a must for all fans and admirers of the Ranger.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. the missing link By mark a st.john This is the book all Lone Ranger fans look for. Not one of the g&d books but from a different puplisher. Pulpville gets a big thankyou from me for releasing this one. The book is fun to read and Striker is a passible writer, however, continuity is not his strong suit. For instance the Ranger already has Silver at the ambush. In earlier books and programs he rides a chestnut which is shotfrom under him before he finds silver. But I ain't complaining. I am sure this book is a lot better than the Disney movie isgoing to be.

Great for a younger kid By kkauer I gave this to my son for his seventh birthday after he expressed interest in The Lone Ranger, but was too young to see the movie, despite begging. He and my husband read the book together and both enjoyed it. My son asked for it every night and now wants to read more Lone Ranger stories.

It is not without some misgivings that I at length make public the strange history communicated to me by my lamented friend Humphrey Challoner. The outlook of the narrator is so evidently abnormal, his ethical standards are so remote from those ordinarily current, that the chronicle of his life and actions may not only fail to secure the sympathy of the reader but may even excite a certain amount of moral repulsion. But by those who knew him, his generosity to the poor, and especially to those who struggled against undeserved misfortune, will be an ample set-off to his severity and even ferocity towards the enemies of society.

The Uttermost Farthing, by R. Austin Freeman

About the Author Richard Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was born in London. He studied medicine at Middlesex Hospital and then entered the Colonial Service. He was assigned to a post in Accra on the Gold Coast of Africa. During his time in Africa he contracted blackwater fever which forced him to return to London. Unable to find a permanent medical position, he decided to try his hand at writing fiction. His first stories were written in collaboration with Dr. John James Pitcairn, the medical officer at Holloway Prison, using the pen name Clifford Ashdown. In 1907 the first Dr. Thorndyke novel "The Red Thumb Mark" was published. He served as a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corp during World War I. He continued writing up until his death, writing parts of "Mr. Polton Explains" in a bomb shelter in 1939 at the age of 77.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Macabre tale of obsession and revenge By Patto In this tightly plotted novel, we follow the bizarre career of a man who loathes criminals. Humphrey Challoner is a cultivated man and amateur scientist. His quiet happy life is destroyed one night when a burglar shoots and kills his young wife. For twenty years Humphrey hunts for the killer, in the process revenging himself on London's criminals class in a surprising and gruesome fashion. To say more would give too much away. Although both Humphrey and the plot have a narrow focus, the story is so full of lively incident, it held my interest throughout. Humphrey is amazingly resourceful and exhibits a delightfully macabre, donnish sense of humor. The writing style has an Edwardian flavor, although it was published in 1914 in the U.S. and in 1920 in Britain (under the title A Savant's Vendetta).Freeman was one of the greatest mystery writers, as demonstrated by his intricately plotted Dr. Thorndyke novels. This book feels like it was written as a diversion, just for fun. It also gives us a glimpse of how respectable people of the era felt about criminals, so it's of historic interest, as well as being quite entertaining. The moral dilemmas set forth invite discussion; you might want to share this book with a friend. The Resurrected Press edition has a very readable format, is nicely edited, and offers a short but informative introduction. I tend to favor this publisher's books over less reliable digital reprints.

"[...]steps to greet his ward. She gave him a smile and a left hand, and went on talking. Lord Buntingford stood by, twisting his moustache, till she had finished. Then the chauffeur, looking flushed and sulky, got into the car, and the girl with Lord Buntingford ascended the steps. Mrs. Friend left the window, and hurriedly went back to the drawing-room, where tea was still spread. Through the drawing-room door she heard a voice from the hall full of indignant energy. "You ought to sack that man, Cousin Philip. He's spoiling that beautiful car of yours." "Is he? He suits me. Have you been scolding him all the way?" "Well, I told him a few things—in your interest." Lord Buntingford laughed. A few words followed in[...]".

Cousin Philip By Bomojaz This is an interesting novel about guilt and redemption, and about learning to accept meaningful happiness even at the expense of passion and fiery romance. Philip Bliss becomes the heir of Helena Pitstone, a cousin of nineteen with a fervent temperament and some experience in the world as an ambulance driver in WW I. She resents Bliss's trying to "control" her. Meanwhile another cousin, Cynthia Welwyn (all the last names are meaningful), has been in love with Bliss for years. Bliss, however, marries Anna, but it's a marriage not made in heaven, and Anna runs off to Paris apparently with another man. Soon he reads a notice in the newspaper that she is dead. Never being able to prove her death, he foregoes remarrying, though once he comes close (for which he feels guilty). Later Anna reappears with a son, Bliss's son, and tells him that she put the death notice in the paper to "free" him. The son, Arthur, is mentally retarded, and Anna can't care for him any longer and wants Bliss to take over so she can go to America. He agrees and all the pieces fall together: Bliss finally finds the happiness (the bliss) he'd been looking for in caring for his son; Cynthia is a marvel with Arthur and "wins well" Bliss's love (they marry); and Helena relinquishes her "stony hardness" toward Philip and falls in love with the energetic Geoffrey. Mrs. Humphrey Ward could never be considered a "modern" novelist (she opposed women's suffrage to her dying day), though in some of her later books (HELENA was her second-to-last novel) she was beginning to point in that direction. Some of her attitudes about marriage, for instance, were very progressive (she does not consider Anna a "bad" person for running off to Paris). There's a briskness in Ward's writing that was sometimes lacking in other novels during this period. (HELENA is the American title; it was originally called COUSIN PHILIP when first published in England.)

Jack and Jill, by Louisa May Alcott

About the Author American novelist Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel Little Women, and its sequels Little Men and Jo s Boys. The daughter of noted transcendentalist and educator Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, Alcott was an active abolitionist and feminist, and the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Schooled mainly by her father, Alcott and her three sisters also received lessons from such notables as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. Alcott penned her first book, Flower Fables, for Emerson s daughter, Ellen. Before gaining critical success for her children s fiction, Alcott wrote several passionate adult novels using the pen name A. M. Barnard, including A Long Fatal Love Chase and Punishment. Alcott s literary career spanned more than 40 years, and she wrote more than 30 books before her death in 1888.

It is not a family book like Little Women or the Rose Duo, but this is a Louisa May Alcott classic that should not be ignored. If nothing else, the interaction between social classes in America, represented by the mothers of Jack and Jill is endlessly fascinating. Also, this book could appeal to both genders. Both boys and girls will be entranced with the train and mechanical images, and it's unusual to read a child's book and have such fresh descriptions...something perhaps owing to the newness of trains at the time. The three girls, Jill, Molly and Merry, and their plans for self-improvement can be seen in almost every young adult book marketed towards girls. What's refreshing about this one is that they're self-improvement is not for the benefit of their peers or to "get a boy", but rather, Louisa May Alcott has them develop for their own personal growth. In an age when self-help books are on the best seller list, this book shows how it was done before it was a science. In addition, it's novel for it's intrerest in health fads and regiments, new school ideas, and the imporance of an American youth culture. Give this book a chance.

By frumiousb While Jack and Jill might not rate as one of the best Alcott novels, it is not worth dismissing out of hand for that reason. As usual, she crafted a thought provoking and enlightened book that teaches as it entertains and comforts.Jack and Jill are fast childhood friends who find their lives interrupted by a terrible sledding accident which leaves both of them invalids. As they recover and heal, they and their friends learn important lessons about responsibility, giving and friendship. Jack and Jill should be an immensely satisfying read for pre-teenagers. The sure Alcott hand with character keeps even the most obvious moral lessons from feeling overly preachy. While the book is ideally suited for younger readers, grown ups will be interested in the larger issues raised here. Alcott firmly asserts the need for individual growth, gender equality, and personal responsbility. Historical discussions about temperance and higher education for women should additionally make this book a good read for history fans.

Two friends, Jack and Jill, go up a hill to go sledding. They come tumbling down, and Jack breaks his leg while Jill injures her back more seriously. The book tells the tale of their recuperation and also of their and their friends' journey into young adulthood. The book is slightly moralistic, in the way that Little Women is; the young people earnestly want to become "good" and to help their friends become "good". Although this style is not in fashion now, it still makes for a sweet, hope-filled story. Very enjoyable. Also recommended: An Old-Fashioned Girl by Louisa May Alcott.

The good old days in Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington By Polly Aird Fascinating account of early Hawaii (the Sandwich Islands), California, and Oregon Territory, which the included what is now Washington State. A travel guide to the sights, people and their customs, and history of those places. Delightful and sympathetic. Wonderful illustrations. Nordhoff (1830-1901) was born in Prussia and emigrated to the U.S. when fifteen years old. At sea for nine years with the navy and merchant marine. Became a staff writer for the New York Evening Post and then the New York Herald. A treasure trove of early information.

Free PDF Ebook Online Practical Graph Analytics with Apache Giraph, by Roman Shaposhnik, Claudio Martella, Dionysios Logothetis

Practical Graph Analytics with Apache Giraph helps you build data mining and machine learning applications using the Apache Foundation’s Giraph framework for graph processing. This is the same framework as used by Facebook, Google, and other social media analytics operations to derive business value from vast amounts of interconnected data points.

Graphs arise in a wealth of data scenarios and describe the connections that are naturally formed in both digital and real worlds. Examples of such connections abound in online social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, among users who rate movies from services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, and are useful even in the context of biological networks for scientific research. Whether in the context of business or science, viewing data as connected adds value by increasing the amount of information available to be drawn from that data and put to use in generating new revenue or scientific opportunities.

Apache Giraph offers a simple yet flexible programming model targeted to graph algorithms and designed to scale easily to accommodate massive amounts of data. Originally developed at Yahoo!, Giraph is now a top top-level project at the Apache Foundation, and it enlists contributors from companies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Practical Graph Analytics with Apache Giraph brings the power of Apache Giraph to you, showing how to harness the power of graph processing for your own data by building sophisticated graph analytics applications using the very same framework that is relied upon by some of the largest players in the industry today.

Many example problems and solutions make this a great learning tool from start to end By Audrey If you have used (or attempted to use) Giraph you will know that it's not the easiest system to pick up and start getting your hands dirty. However, it is an extremely powerful tool that can be used to solve many interesting problems at scale. This book does a great job of taking you from the very beginning with simple, straightforward algorithms to more complex real-world applications and finally more advanced topics (e.g., data partitioning, out-of-core algorithms, running on the cloud, etc.). With this book you can start without knowing anything about Giraph or distributed graph processing systems in general (or even about graphs!) and learn how to solve many graph problems at scale. There are several things that I find so appealing about this book. The main things are: (1) the _numerous_ examples with step-by-step illustrations that help you understand what exactly is happening during an algorithm, (2) the fact that the example applications are motivated by real-world problems (e.g., recommendation systems, pagerank, etc.) whose solutions can then serve as a building block for your personal applications, and (3) the example code that will allow you to quickly get your hands dirty and start playing with the tool.

This e-single, a compilation of New York Times articles, examines the collapse of Lehman Brothers. The failure of this major investment bank in September 2008 snowballed into a full-blown panic. By the time it was over, other major financial institutions had to be saved, necessitating the involvement of the federal government on a massive scale. Why was Lehman the only bank that was not considered too big to fail? Understanding Lehman’s unique situation and the reasons it was allowed to die goes beyond apportioning responsibility for the financial crisis and the recession that cost millions of ordinary Americans jobs and savings. Today, long after the bailouts, the debate continues over the role of the Federal Reserve in a crisis like the one precipitated by the overnight collapse of Lehman Brothers.

I have read all of the important books on the 2007/8 financial disaster and this one is a must read for a complete understanding. It also shows how weak the tools the regulators have to deal with these messes.

What does it take to move forty dogs, three sleds, twenty tons of food and gear, and six men from all over the world across nearly four thousand of the coldest miles on earth? Cathy de Moll, the executive director of the 1990 International Trans-Antarctica Expedition, introduces the wild cast of characters who made it happen, on the ice and off: leaders Will Steger and Jean-Louis Etienne, who first met accidentally, on the way to the North Pole; Valery Skatchkov, the Soviet bureaucrat who supplied a "hot" Russian airplane; Yasue Okimoto, who couldn't bear to leave headquarters in Minnesota while her boyfriend was on the ice; Qin Dahe, the Chinese member of the team, who didn't know how to ski; the millions of children who followed the expedition in schools around the world, learning about the fragility and ferocity of the seventh continent; and many others.  These stories of near misses and magical coincidences are as suspenseful and compelling as the expedition's headlines--and they have never been told. But they also reflect the greatest lesson of the project: the international cooperation that was needed for the expedition's success is every bit as essential for the preservation of Antarctica today.

Think South: How We Got Six Men and Forty Dogs Across Antarctica, by Cathy de Moll

Review "This book is about the International Trans-Antarctica Expedition. But it's not about the frostbite. Not about the 75-knot winds that whipped tents relentlessly. Not about endless crevasse crossings. Not about keeping dozens of exhausted sled dogs alive while battling Mother Nature's worst wiles. It's about all the invisible stuff a team of people need to do behind the scenes to ensure the success of an incredibly complicated venture." - Expedition News"A zany, spirited tell-all of what it took to pull off one of the most audacious expeditions in modern history. De Moll sheds light on a side of 20th-century expeditions rarely told: the budgetary and logistical puzzles, cross-continental love affairs, high-rolling deals, and dozens of behind-the-scenes heroes from Moscow to Beijing who made this journey possible. And she does it with humor, wit, and grace... a great read: as much a nostalgic recounting of a bygone era as it is an edge-of-your-seat adventure tale." - Outside Magazine'"Think South" may not be the typical book of polar exploration, but it's a stirring read that gives readers appreciation for the diplomacy, fundraising and logistics behind a major expedition.... a memoir with warmth and heart." - Minneapolis StarTribune"If the logistics behind an expedition across Antarctica doesn't sound as riveting as the expedition itself, think again. International intrigue, backroom deals, late-night memos, and the possibility of unwittingly stranding friends in Antarctica make this a compelling read for armchair travelers and those interested in Antarctica and international relations. Those who recall the expedition or have read the firsthand accounts, will find this entry especially fascinating."-- Library Journal"...Reads like a nail-biting and sometimes-humorous novel. De Moll structures "Think South" around individuals, giving the book a warmth and immediacy with wonderful descriptions of these players from various cultures." - St. Paul Pioneer Press

From the Inside Flap Cathy de Moll, who has been a teacher, communications executive, writer, and entrepreneur, was the executive director of the International Trans-Antarctica Expedition. Will Steger led the first confirmed dogsled expedition to the North Pole, the first and only traverse of Antarctica by dogsled, and other remarkable expeditions.

From the Back Cover "I have been waiting all these years for Cathy to write her story, and she has really delivered. This book is both history and a meditation on the nature of culture and the individual... not to mention a wonderful recounting of all it took to get our expedition across Antarctica. I enjoyed every minute." - Will Steger, polar explorer, educator and found of Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy"This is not just your ordinary adventurer's account of physical exploits and hardship. It is the story of the personalities and work behind the scenes that make great adventures happen. It's a page-turner with great insight and warmth. Bravo!" - Dan Buettner, New York Times bestselling author of Blue Zones, Thrive and Blue Zone Solutions"A vivid insider's account of the complexities of launching an epic history-making expedition." - Ann Bancroft, polar explorer, educator, and founder of the Ann Bancroft Foundation"Cathy de Moll shows how a smart, capable woman can finesse the challenges of the hyper masculine world of extreme adventure. Her sketches bring a truly astonishing collection of personalities to life, and they show how she provided the vital connections to make it work - by asking questions, making friends, listening, standing her ground, and seeing the humor in the chaos around her. I am an outdoor adventure enthusiast and I couldn't put the book down." - Miriam Nelson, founder and director, Strong Women Initiative, and author of Strong Women Stay Young and three other New York Times bestselling books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A well written and thoroughly enjoyable book By John Felton A well written and thoroughly enjoyable book. This is a tale of adventure on the ice, but the real story is what happens in the background. The delightful characters, the logistical nightmares, governmental intrigue, and humorous anecdotes make this more than a telling of an incredible expedition, but a study of the audaciousness that is needed to pull something like this off. Written with precision and wit, a delightful read.

By Amazon Customer I was vry interested in The Trans Antarctic Expedition, and lucky enough to meet Will Steger when he was speaking in Houston, so when I saw this book was available, I ordered it. It's a great narrative abuot the difficulties Cathy encountered in trying to keep a handle on the logistical side of the expedition. Her job, seemed to me to be a lot like one that a film producer's assistant might have when working on location in a foreign country without the complicating vagaries of the Antarcti weather. Her portraits of the variuous people she worked with are well-drawn and captivating. She obvioiusly loved the Soviet hustlerVictor, who hwlped get the Russians on board. When you read her tales abou thim, you will too. An engaging, realistic, interesting account of the behind-the-scenes issues in getting this motley crew from one end of the continent to the other succesfully.

I initially questioned the author's choice to organize the book by the characters, in most cases a chapter per person, rather than chronologically. I thought it might be disorienting. No. You get the outline of the story early on, and it just gets deeper and more nuanced and familiar as it goes one, each chapter overlaying the one before, filling it in with color, texture and detail.

Phantasmagoria and Other Poems, by Lewis Carroll

Review "The black and white illustrations, by Arthur B. Frost, are as witty as the poem. Charming." -- Fortean Times, March 2000

About the Author Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer, mathematician, Anglican deacon, and photographer. Best known for his classics Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and Jabberwocky, Carroll was also an accomplished inventor who created an early version of what is today known as Scrabble. The publication of Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 brought Carroll a certain level of fame, although he continued to supplement his income through his work as a mathematics tutor at Christ Church, Oxford College. Carroll s whimsical characters and nonsensical verse resonated with Victorian-era readers, and his books continue to be enjoyed by numerous modern societies dedicated to his promoting his works.

The poetry of Homer with the wit of Dr. Suess. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes poetry in any form.

Frost that capture the humor of Carroll's poem perfectly. Martin Gardner has provided a short introduction with letters from Carroll to Frost regarding the art and to a friend with regards to para-psychological phenomena. He also provides notes for obscure words or puns. Frost and Gardner are what makes this the version of Carroll's Phantasmagoria you should read. The poem itself is a conversation between a man of 42 and a less than adept ghost. Among the things learned are the 5 rules of behavior for a ghost, the housing requirements for a ghost etc. Carroll's vintage humor is expressed in a narrative poem of seven cantos using verses of five rhymed lines. The poetry is well written - the rhymes are not forced but natural, the humor relatively subtle. This book justifies its being in the series "Literary Classics".

I'm Not Educated Enough To Understand It By theboombody I love Lewis Carroll's work, but sometimes I just have no freaking clue what he's talking about. I experienced this sensation of vagueness a few times during my reading of the Sylvie and Bruno books, but I felt it most while reading some of the poems in Phantasmagoria. But what I could understand I really enjoyed. I really loved Hiawatha's Photographing, Melancholetta, Size and Tears, and The Lang Coortin', although some of these poems have strangely inconclusive endings. It's interesting to see Carroll's last poem in this book, Fame's Penny Trumpet, where he's really, really mad at academic big-wigs.Make sure you read Alice before even attempting to read this.

Among his many talents as an industrialist and philanthropist, I have to add author. After reading this book, I consider that Andrew Carnegie is a wonderfully gifted writer. I recommend this book for capturing the world of the late 1800s. He had access to different people in politics and business around the world due to being an industrialist.Andrew Carnegie was a wealthy American industrialist of the late 1800s. I remember him best for all of the libraries he built spread out across America which were a wonderful gift to the country. When he initially traveled around the world, he made some notes which he privately published for his friends. At their urging, he cleaned up the notes and published them in this book. He is a wonderful writer, and writes better than most professional writers that I have read during my life. In addition to the expected travel book fare, he has comments on international finance and government which are very pertinent to the time. Some of the comments still apply today as they are timeless.Carnegie is a gifted observer of people and things and able to convey his thoughts in words to the reader. He traveled by rail from Pittsburgh to San Francisco, from where the steamship Belgic sailed for Japan. He captures the feel of the ships he was on with the other passengers. He brings to life the different countries he visited with their scenery, people and customs. He went to Japan, and visited Yokohama, Tokio ( spelling used in the book), and Nagasaki. In China, Peking and Shanghai, Canton, the Paris of the East in the late 1800s were visited.

He was a one of a kind guy and an incredible observer and student of human nature. His predictions are very interesting 100 years later. Amazing facts noted. No roads in China then. Only wheelbarrow tracks between villages. Railroad pulled up by government edict. Chinese graves everywhere. Commentary of the Chinese forms of bureaucracy and military of the time and living conditions for the common people 100 years ago.

Turn on the faucet, and water pours out. Pull out the drain plug, and the dirty water disappears. Most of us give little thought to the hidden systems that bring us water and take it away when we’re done with it. But these underappreciated marvels of engineering face an array of challenges that cannot be solved without a fundamental change to our relationship with water, David Sedlak explains in this enlightening book. To make informed decisions about the future, we need to understand the three revolutions in urban water systems that have occurred over the past 2,500 years and the technologies that will remake the system. The author starts by describing Water 1.0, the early Roman aqueducts, fountains, and sewers that made dense urban living feasible. He then details the development of drinking water and sewage treatment systems—the second and third revolutions in urban water. He offers an insider’s look at current systems that rely on reservoirs, underground pipe networks, treatment plants, and storm sewers to provide water that is safe to drink, before addressing how these water systems will have to be reinvented. For everyone who cares about reliable, clean, abundant water, this book is essential reading.

The Best Book on the Crisis of Drinking Water By Prufrock With drought in the news all over the country, this is a very important book and quite readable. The book looks at the history of drinking water beginning with ancient Rome, its chemistry, the story of how it is treated and delivered to our homes, and the challenges and changes that will be required to accommodate a growing world population. The book is written in a lively and accessible style with lots of humor, fascinating anecdotes and personalities, and filled with counterintuitive observations, such as the fact that most of our drinking water in the future will come from sewage. (Some of it already is, but don't tell the residents of Houston that). There are a number of books published about water. But most of them deal with the subject from a geo-political or world environmental perspective. This book is different. It's written by a hydrological engineer and explains the practical steps we need to take to avoid dying of thirst.

Timely overview of the importance of water By RabiysRhyme If you are looking for a dry, academic treatise on why humans have corrupted the earth, keep looking."Water 4.0" is a delightful, fascinating and ultimately very balanced treatment of humans and water: past, present, and future.David Sedlak has won many awards and recognition for his innovative and high quality teaching at Berkeley, and it shows through in the book. You will probably put the book down and be amazed at how much you have learned about water and what an easy read it was. The author has produced a very readable tour of water and its importance to human civilization. Starting with the early efforts to channel fresh water to the present and an open view the future, the importance of water is delivered in a fascinating tour of Roman aqueducts, French sewers, Victorian battles for health, through modern systems for delivering water and removing wastes.Ultimately, the reader is given a great primer on water and its importance to life and society, and in the end, positioned to consider how human society will continue to grow given the challenges of obtaining and providing clean water while removing wastes in sustainable ways. I think that the author has succeed in his goal of calling our attention to the importance of water to all of us, and how big those challenges are for both low resource and high resource societies.More at his website: [...]

By Lee Ferguson David Sedlak's treatise on the history and future prospects for water resources in our society is an eye-opening look at the remarkable engineering that has helped to make our civilization what it is today. His organization of water infrastructure development into four major "revolutions" seems appropriate and logical, and this treatment helps to explain the sometimes curious ways in which we currently access and dispose of the water we use. The book is an excellent read for both the expert and novice reader, and Professor Sedlak's deep understanding of the subject matter is readily apparent. The writing style is fun and easy to follow, and I found myself having many "aha!" moments as I read about development of treatment technologies and water delivery methods. Most importantly, Sedlak takes great care to highlight the significant and critical challenges that we face at this particular moment with respect to both water quality and water quantity. It is abundantly clear that our society must reevaluate the way in which we use and dispose of water if we are to avoid serious environmental, social, and economic hardships. Water 4.0 should prove a rallying point for those interested in this important topic, and therefore I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about the health and well-being of both our society and the global environment.
