The only reason I don't give it five stars is because of the style here and there and some improbable situations in the plot. It was a very enjoyable read with a clear redemptive message. There is plenty of old-style adventure with the setting in the pioneer gold field settlements in North America. I would recommend it to anyone, especially young readers.

It was in the newspapers at the time that in more than one ship's log were entered strange reports of gruesome and wholly indefinable noises heard at night in certain latitudes. Of the four African adventure novels that I have read by him, "The Sign of the Spider" is my favorite.Mitford was a contemporary of the much more famous H. Rider Haggard, and like Haggard wrote stories of adventure set in the colonial days of south Africa. He often mixed in supernatural/fantasy elements, also like Haggard. But he was far from being a mere Haggard imitator, as many of the "Lost Race" writers of the era were. Mitford was original and had his own voice. His world view and fictional approach were very different from Haggard's. H. Rider Haggard was at heart a Romanticist, and he had an endless faith in the dignity and ethical superiority of the Englishman. To Haggard, colonialism conferred blessings on the native Africans, and English colonial policy was based upon philanthropy and motivated by the noble cause of elevating the natives to a state of enlightened Christian civilization. Mitford, on the other hand, was a realist and even a naturalist. Mitford's focus charactors are often self-serving scoundrels with no reservations about straying beyond the boundaries of the law into criminal activities. Stanninghame, the protagonist of "the Sign of the Spider", abandons his family in England, and has no qualms about joining up with a slaving party after arriving in Africa and finding little success in legitimate commercial ventures. No Haggard hero would ever dream of such a thing. Likewise, to Mitford English colonial policy was based solely on mercantile gain and it ruthlessly exploited the native population. Making money and exerting control were the primary objectives of the British colonial presence. In this respect Mitford's approach was much more modern than Haggard's, and since Mitford is a highly talented story teller, it is surprising he has not found a larger contemporary following. The Sign of the Spider is a grand action adventure story incorporating well-developed, if often amoral, characters. The worshippers of the spider are an intriguing, well-realized lost race, and Stanninghame's final encounter with the giant Spider God with hideous death hanging in one balance and escape with a fortune of uncut diamonds hanging in the other is a scene that can stand in power and intensity beside Frodo's fight with Shelob or the epic battle scenes in "King Solomon's Mines". The book is highly recommended for fans of the rich fin de siecle fantasy/adventure tradition.By the way, Mitford's earlier novel "The Weird of Deadly Hollow", a book about a horrible murder and an even more horrible revenge, is the grimmest book I have ever read. In "The Sign of the Spider", Mitford manages a happy ending - of sorts.

Horrific adventures in late nineteenth-century Africa By Patto Laurence Stanninghame is one of the most complex heroes I've encountered in Victorian fiction - a rogue and a cynic with noble qualities. We first meet him as a gentleman living in genteel poverty in the London suburbs, burdened with a shrewish wife, three children and a rapidly shrinking bank account. His only assets are hunting skills, reckless courage and nerves of steel. So he ships out to Johannesburg to seek his fortune, or die doing it.In South Africa our hero does two despicable things. He gets involved with a beautiful young woman in Johannesburg without mentioning the wife and kids in London. And he turns slave trader up country to repair his finances. Somehow, despite this unworthy conduct, Stanninghame continues to engage our interest. His fearlessness, thoroughbred manners, caustic humor and iron self-control are seductive. The action revolves around Stanninghame's horrific adventures in the miasmic African forests and the plains that are home to the People of the Spider. Ingenious twists of plot and Fate kept me glued to my armchair.Bertram Mitford's depictions of cannibalism, tribal warfare, ritual sacrifice and slave raids are shockingly graphic for a late Victorian writer. An aristocratic colonial with broad life experience, Mitford spoke Zulu and once served with the frontier mounted police. As a popular fiction writer he was an important contributor to the high romance of Africa. The Sign of the Spider was first published in 1896 to great success. The introduction, which I suggest reading after the book, goes deep into some fascinating theories on the symbolism of the spider and the behavior of the characters in terms of fin de siècle racism and imperialism. So while at first I groaned at the imperfections of the hero, I was all the more intrigued by the ways in which he (somewhat) redeemed himself. The Sign of the Spider is a product of the politics and attitudes of its times. But it also transcends those attitudes in some ways. This is a book worth reading. I recommend it to readers who might enjoy a good strong mix of adventure, history, love and moral ironies.

I am impressed with his writing as well as with his grasp of character. His eye for the haps, mishaps, and circumstances of life is sharp, observant, and to the point. His characters are fully three-dimensional, they talk, act and behave like real people. I can't recall any scene in the story where the actions and motivations of the characters didn't seem natural. His descriptions are good, in-depth and set the scene well. Mitford writes knowingly of Africa, yet, he never seems to veer of into travelogue-like monologues on the landscape. Then again, this story isn't just about Africa, it's really a story about the men that risked all to make great fortunes there in the days when the British Empire was at it's height. One thing is for sure, the hero of our story does things that he dare not speak of in later life. This is a sweeping tale of adventure across the vast uncharted interior of Africa as it was before Western mores of civilization changed it forever. It's a tale of slave raiders, cannibals, fearless enemies in the vast lawlessness of Central Africa. 'One of the dark places of the World,' where mercy is a rare commodity, and morality is just a word. For free on Kindle. If you are in the mood for something out of the ordinary, then this story is just the ticket.

About the Author With publication of his first book in 1908, The Confessions of a Beachcomber, Banfield won international attention as a conservationist and defender of nature, a theme he continued in My Tropic Isle. An avowed disciple of Thoreau, Banfield sought simplicity in his own life but found in nature a rewarding complexity that never failed to "lift the day above the mundane."

Banfield's My Tropic Isle presents the writings of an erudite individual in frail health, who had retired to a tropical island near Australia in 1895. An avowed disciple of Thoreau, Banfield personally observed and experienced the wonder and complexity in nature. This in turn, brought an enduring joy to his life, and motivated him to lobby the government to declare his beloved island (and others near it) as "Reserves for the Protection and Preservation of Native Birds." A thoughtful account sure to resonate with the hearts of nature lovers everywhere, My Tropic Isle is a welcome addition to the growing library of Nature Conservation literature.

Short and sweet.Mr. Alcott's work is from the heart and it is inspired by the spirit of community improvement, which is one of the fundamental prinicples he proposes ought to be included in an American male's psyche as a key motivator. That principle still has merit, as do many of the others he advances. On the very first page of Chapter One, he defines every man's purpose in life: "to be of the greatest possible usefulness." No problem. Those guys seem always to have been producing something. They had no TV, no iPad, Kindle, smart phone, Google search, Bing (just for comparison.) But there were, as always, distractions. Handle them.If you are conversant with contemporary thought and practice in parenting and aware of some developmental psychology - not that the reviewer so purports - as "MyCousin Vinnie" would say, "it holds water." (Granted, Alcott's era is nothing even close to recognizably touchy-feel-y, but he loves youth and says that kids playing is an absolute must- after the work is done, of course.)Between what Alcott reports and what the informed reader already knows of boy character building, virtually all of the history of traditional American values is within grasp.Keep in mind that not many people were eligible to vote then. Women CEO's could be counted on the fingers of no hands. Because of those anachronisms and more, I'd bet some unfortunates today will find the book laughable, as they judge Alcott by 2010 sensibilities. That's often a mistake.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What is old is new again. I loved it. By Dan This book covers it all. I find history to be very interesting and to see the message this book leads to the younger generation is very interesting. It reminds me of the book of Proverbs but more up to date if you can consider 1890 up to date. It funny that people are people no matter what time they lived on this earth and the advice is really still solid.

"[...] Some high-souled bard in his enchanted round May compass, Power divine! Oh, spread Thy wing, Thy dovelike wing that makes confusion fly, Over my dark, void spirit, summoning New worlds of music, strains that may not die. Oh, happiest who before thine altar wait, With pure hands ever holding up on high The guiding Star of all who seek Thy gate, The undying lamp of heavenly Poesy. Too weak, too wavering, for such holy task Is my frail arm, O Lord; but I would fain Track to its source the brightness, I would bask In the clear ray that makes Thy pathway plain. I dare not hope with David’s harp to chase The evil spirit from the troubled breast; Enough for me if I can find such grace To listen to the strain, and be at rest. THE CHRISTIAN YEAR.[...]".

Charles Erlandson Having spent 3 years researching John Keble's "The Christian Year" for my Ph.D. dissertation, I feel qualified to make some comments on this extraordinary work of literature.Essentially, "The Christian Year" is early 19th century devotional poetry written in a Romantic vein. Keble, who was born in 1792 and is credited for having started the Oxford Movement with his Assize Sermon in 1833, was an Anglican priest, poet, and professor. "The Christian Year" is his book of poetry in which he wrote a poem for each week of the Christian year, as well as a poem for each of the services from The Book of Common Prayer. It's a work that is not much read today but that was wildly successful in the 19th century. While the aesthetic level of the poetry is second-rate compared to Keble's contemporary Romantic poets (at least the more famous ones), when read as devotional poetry that connects one to God through the Church, the Bible, the Prayer Book, and nature, the poetry still has the power to move. While the poetry of "The Christian Year" will seem outdated to most, if not actually inferior, a proper reading of it in its context will benefit not only students of history and literature but also the patient Christian reader in search of a profound devotional literary work. The full title of the work is: The Christian Year: Thoughts in Verse for the Sundays and Holydays throughout the Year. The volume begins with a "Morning" and "Evening" hymn, corresponding to Morning and Evening Prayer services, followed by a poem for every week in the Church year. These are followed by poems for the various saints' days, Holy Communion, Holy Baptism, and the occasional services. In 1828 poems for the State services were added as well.Keble's poetic life originated in his undergraduate days when he relieved his emotions by composing poetry, often on any scrap of paper he could find. When Keble began around 1819 to compose the poems that would eventually be included in The Christian Year, he had no intention of crafting his poetry into a unified companion to the Prayer Book. He apparently began while a tutor at Oriel College, inspired by his tours back and forth between Oxford and his home in Fairford. Keble's own theory of poetry illuminates the personal and individual aspect of poetry from which his own poetry originally flowed: "Let us therefore deem the glorious art of Poetry a kind of medicine divinely bestowed upon man: which gives healing relief to secret mental emotion, yet without detriment to modest reserve: and, while giving scope to enthusiasm, yet rules it with order and due control." Keble's poetry, in keeping with his theory, was written first and foremost for the comfort of his own soul. Its most immediate impression was on that of his close circle family and friends, who universally found something new and powerful in the poems. The comfort for the individual soul that the poems brought appears frequently in the correspondence and remains of Keble's family and friends prior to its publication.Keble continued writing poetry for his own benefit in the 1820s, and, at some point not apparently recorded in Keble's correspondence or in the memoirs of those who knew him, he decided to arrange the poetry so that a poem would be provided for each holy day in the Church year. By 1825 Keble wrote a friend, "I have got a few attempts at hymns by me, which I have from time to time written, principally for my own relief . . . . My plan was to have one, if I could, for every Sunday & holiday in the year: taking the hint for the subject of each from something or other in the proper Psalms or Lessons for the day. When he did publish the work in 1827, he added to it his own Advertisement, in which he admirably sets out his aims: "The object of the present publication will be attained, if any person find assistance from it in bringing his own thoughts and feelings into more entire unison with those recommended and exemplified in the Prayer Book." Keble makes clear that his goal in publishing his poetry was to have his readers use The Christian Year as a companion to the Prayer Book. A better summary of the purpose and effect of The Christian Year could not be found than what Keble himself wrote in his Advertisement. Keble also expected that his poetry, along with the Prayer Book, would provide a "sober standard of feeling in matters of practical religion." The Liturgy, he said, disciplined the tempers which need disciplining in such an age of excitement. There is, therefore, a dual origin and dual purpose of The Christian Year. The original poetic impulse for the poetry came from Keble's own desire to express himself as an individual soul addressing His God, often out of a need for comfort. This original source for the poetry was then fitted for use as an Anglican devotional manual which had specific reference to the Prayer Book. This dual origin and purpose of the poetry is highly significant for explaining the astounding success of the poetry in the nineteenth century and its continuing value.A work of High Church devotional poetry, at a time when interest in poetry in general was beginning to wane, was not expected by many to succeed. Keble himself thought that nothing would come of it. "I remember, when it was first in the press," Isaac Williams wrote, "coming with Keble out of Baxter's printing-office, when Keble said, `It will be still-born, I know very well; but it is only in obedience to my father's wishes that I publish it, and that is some comfort.'" Keble's perpetual embarrassment by his success provides further evidence that he was never prepared for, and thus never expected, the success he achieved. The Christian Year enjoyed an immediate, lasting, and enormous success. The 1827 first edition of 500 needed little time to sell out and persuade Parker of the need for a second edition. The second edition of 750 also sold out within a few months, and a third edition of 1250 was published around March of 1828. The total number of copies sold in the first year alone, combining the sales of the first three editions, was at least 2500 copies, while the total sold for the first ten years was 26,500. By 1873 when the copyright had expired, 158 editions had been published by Parker, the original publisher, and 379,000 copies had been sold by the same date. My research indicates that approximately 1,000,000 copies of "The Christian Year" were sold in the 19th century, and many used volumes are available, as well as a plethora of modern reprints.Christians from many different denominations read The Christian Year. One writer said that the spiritual life and feeling of Keble's poetry "exist in Christian hearts, whether reared under Episcopalian, Presbyterian, or Nonconformist influences." My research indicates that a great number of major figures in the 19th century had read "The Christian Year," and many people had virtually memorized it. Thomas Carlyle, Florence Nightingale, Christina Rossetti, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, William Gladstone, and many other have left testimony to having read "The Christian Year."Those who read The Christian Year most faithfully, however, were likely to be Anglicans due to its connection with the Prayer Book. Many people read Keble's poetry week by week for years: the vast majority of these were Anglicans. This is what one would expect, since the contents of the book were based on an Anglican Church year, a specifically Anglican lectionary, and services which were often specifically Anglican. Finally, many readers of the 19th century wrote that "The Christian Year" did more to promote High Church and Catholic principles than the Tracts for the Times because Keble wrote through the vehicle of poetry and a poetry that appealed to all Christians, even while it subtly expressed Catholic ideals of the Church and a sacramental worldview.

"[...] Late that night, I called over to my brother to ask how long measles lasted. He told me to go to sleep, so that I knew he did not know the answer to my question. I lay at ease tranquilly turning the problem over in my mind. Four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks; why, if I was lucky, it would carry me through to the holidays! At all events, school was already very far away, like a nightmare remembered at noon. I said good-night to my brother, and received an irritated grunt in reply. I did not mind his surliness; tomorrow when I woke up, I would begin my dreams. II [...]".

Really different take on the topic of ghosts! I like the "old-fashioned" writing style, and the turn of phrases used by the author were charming.

Reading Lincoln's words made me want to explore this ominous period in greater depth.

He was a brilliant man, lawyer, politician, etc. He was not called "Honest Abe" for nothing. He knew the difference between right and wrong and acted upon it. He never spun the truth like so many do today. He had all the qualities of a gentleman and a God-fearing patriot, a loving husband and father, and a great and steadfast friend. I doubt today's colleges could ever bring anyone close to the homespun education Lincoln had. A must read!

About the Author Ralph Connor was the pseudonym of best-selling Canadian writer Charles William Gordon. Born in a small town in Ontario, Gordon s interest in writing was ignited as a student first at the University of Toronto and then at Knox College, where he completed his divinity studies. Gordon went on to become a reverend in both the Presbyterian and United churches, and used the pen name Ralph Connor to keep his literary activities separate from his religious vocation. Over the course of his career, Connor published more than forty works, including the wildly popular The Sky Pilot, which sold more than one million copies, Glengarry School Days, The Man from Glengarry, and Postscript to Adventure, a posthumous autobiography published after Gordon s death in 1937.

A young minister comes among the secretive closed-off society of lumberjacks, ranchers and cowpokes who view encroaching civilization with a proud cynicism. Initially stuck with the derisive appellation of "The Sky Pilot" - his influence nevertheless brings God, goodness, and personal decisions to be viewed as serious opportunities to develop character in keeping with the rugged grandeur of their surroundings. A Colorful Account of the Frontier By Ralph Lawrence I first heard the term "Sky Pilot" many years ago, when a man was talking about pastors or clergy who conduct their ministries on the frontier of the North American West. His observation was that such pastors were a kind of breed-set-apart, more down-to-earth than those who preferred the more genteel styles of the big cities, men (no female clergy in those days - but young women often found themselves on the western frontier, called there to be "school marms" and expected to marry local ranchers and cowboys) who were willing to live and work in those untamed regions, and adapt to the same type of environment as depicted in countless western movies. At the time, I was a young pastor serving a parish that would fit the frontier description very nicely, a small western town that had sprung up in the 19th century along the railroad when the original Oregon Short Line (later to become part of the Union Pacific) was constructed in the Pacific Northwest. If an author so captures a certain meaning, that his words becomes part of the human vocabulary even when separated from his original story, we can call him a definite success. That is exactly what has happened here. The author of Sky Pilot, Ralph Connor, captured beautifully the world about which he wrote, both the natural surroundings and the diverse people who populate that world. His words, fitting a tradition widely expanded in the work of Louis L'Amour, describe in a skillful, appreciative way, the character of a portion of the North American continent that has been typically ignored by those preferring the life of eastern cities. Here is a sample:“Beyond the great prairies and in the shadow of the Rockies lie the Foothills. For nine hundred miles the prairies spread themselves out in vast level reaches, and then begin to climb over softly rounded mounds that ever grow higher and sharper till, here and there, they break into jagged points and at last rest upon the great bases of the mighty mountains. These rounded hills that join the prairies to the mountains form the Foothill Country. They extend for about a hundred miles only, but no other hundred miles of the great West are so full of interest and romance. The natural features of the country combine the beauties of prairie and of mountain scenery. There are valleys so wide that the farther side melts into the horizon, and uplands so vast as to suggest the unbroken prairie. Nearer the mountains the valleys dip deep and ever deeper till they narrow into canyons through which mountain torrents pour their blue-gray waters from glaciers that lie glistening between the white peaks far away. Here are the great ranges on which feed herds of cattle and horses. Here are the homes of the ranchmen, in whose wild, free, lonely existence there mingles much of the tragedy and comedy, the humor and pathos, that go to make up the romance of life. Among them are to be found the most enterprising, the most daring, of the peoples of the old lands. The broken, the outcast, the disappointed, these too have found their way to the ranches among the Foothills. A country it is whose sunlit hills and shaded valleys reflect themselves in the lives of its people; for nowhere are the contrasts of light and shade more vividly seen than in the homes of the ranchmen of the Albertas. The experiences of my life have confirmed in me the orthodox conviction that Providence sends his rain upon the evil as upon the good; else I should never have set my eyes upon the Foothill country, nor touched its strangely fascinating life, nor come to know and love the most striking man of all that group of striking men of the Foothill country— the dear old Pilot, as we came to call him long afterwards.”

He was active in theatre entertainment until his death on 07/07/1926 where he was staying in Big Moose, Herkimer, New York. The book is a look into life in the 1920's. Enjoy the book!

This little volume is the real stuff, I can tell you. After years of work as a medical doctor in Miami, my life seemed empty. Years of psychotherapy and a quick flip through "What Color is my Parachute?" led me to this book, chock-loaded with plenty of zowie and the real low-down on the know-how to break in to the exciting world of Vaudeville! Some people scoff when I tell them I'm going into Vaudeville. They say Vaudeville's been dead these 75 years. I can only look at them with pity comingled with scorn. "WHO'S been dead these 75 years?" I query, with a significant lift of the eyebrow. This always shows them a thing or two.Anybody can make it in movies or TV. But for those with the moxie, "Writing for Vaudeville" is the only way to go!

The second volume recounting World War I as told through the eyes of Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill's superlative account of the prelude to and events of the First World War is a defining work of 20th-century history. With dramatic narrative power, Churchill reconstructs the action on the Western and Eastern Fronts, the wars at sea and in the air, and the advent of tanks and U-boats.

Rich with personal insights, this second part of Churchill's magisterial work covers the year 1915 and includes the chapters "The Deadlock in the West," "The First Defeat of the U-boats," "The Battle of Suvla Bay in Gallipoli," and "The Abandonment of the Dardanelles."

The World Crisis 1911-1918, Part 2: 1915, by Winston Churchill

Review "The World Crisis is at once an outstandingly readable history of the First World War -- the seminal drama of modern times -- and an eyewitness account, especially of its opening years. Whether as a statesman or an author, Churchill was a giant; and The World Crisis towers over most other books about the Great War." -- David Fromkin, author of A Peace to End All Peace"Winston Churchill's personality suffuses The World Crisis, not only in its arguments but also in its masterful prose. The book, however, aspires to be even more than that -- a general history of the war that shaped the twentieth century as well as the attitudes of one of the century's most powerful personalities." -- Hew Strachan, author of The First World War"In this remarkable work, Churchill, as a maker and a writer of history, explores the confusions and complexities of World War I, eerily foreshadowing the later global struggle he would fight alongside Franklin Roosevelt. In a new century, the book remains essential reading, as fresh and compelling as ever, for the central issue it addresses -- how a free people should chart their way through a world of conflicting interests -- is always with us." -- Jon Meacham, bestselling author of Franklin and Winston

First World War By gaston magrinat Sir Winston has a wonderfull dominion of the English language and, with the simplest words, conveys the action, or completes a description, in way that you feel part of the story. On this particular opus the style is vintage Churchill and the book is quite a delight to read.Having said all that, and to go to the point, this is not a book you want to read as your first on WW I.His is a personal narrative, of all the episodes on which he played a part, with insights that only a witness to the events can give.Large parts of the events of this war are skimmed over or simply not mentioned, the descriptions of battles are succint and to the point, etc.His coverage of the Turkish front, specially the infamous Galiopoli campaign, is an attemt to come clean on that dark episode and, this section is worth the rice of the book by itself. It honestly narrates it from the inside and lais the blame evenly and with great sincerity. If you have a working knoledge of the war, if you have read a general history of it or, for an example of a great starting book "The Guns of August", then this book will be gem on your library's history section

A seamless abridgement of Churchill's classic history of WWI By Craig MACKINNON This one-volume history of WWI is necessarily a severely abridged version of Churchill's multi-volume history. What is remarkable is that this book never reads as an abridgement - it is engrossing and complete in its own right. Any problems I have with this abridgement I would also have with the full version. Some are not Winston's fault: the most obvious is that maps are difficult to read and placed in bizzare locations. There is also the glaring omission of any kind of post-war analysis. The last volume of the full work came out after the peace conference, so Churchill could have included a chapter or even a few pages on Versailles. There are, of course, many modern books on the subject (e.g. MacMillan's recent "Paris 1919"), but these are written knowing that Versailles was simply a cease-fire (or to use Churchill's own memorable phrase, the "20-year armistice"). What did the British and French think of the treaty in the '20s? Finally, as a Canadian, it is deeply insulting that Churchill never once mentions the presence of Canadian soldiers in the line - we are simply lumped in with the "British Army", even when acting as an independent corps, as at Vimy Ridge (it's not like the Battle of Vimy Ridge is ignored, in fact it is talked about several times!).The other criticism that has been levelled against this work, and it is entirely valid, is that it is very self-serving to the author. To quote another Churchillism (although he apparently never said it exactly this way), "History will be kind to me for I intend to write it." A neophyte reader could be excused from thinking, on the basis of this book, that the most important battles in WWI were between Britain and Turkey. More chapters are dedicated to the Dardenelles campaign than to the ALL the battles on the Western and Russian Fronts combined. Churchill uses these chapters to vindicate his decisions and to comment on the sources of the failure of the campaign. Although he spreads blame, he doesn't really blame people, certainly not because the people involved were malicious or stupid. No, Churchill rather blames the fact that they disagreed strategically with the direction of the war. Because Churchill's prose is so powerful, it is hard to disagree with his analysis - had the Dardenelles offensive proceeded apace, with sufficient initial force, and with a vigourous naval presence, Turkey would likely have been forced to sue for peace. However, it seems extremely unlikely to me that this would have changed anything substantial in the main theatres - I think Germany would still have grappled with England and France for several more years, Russia would have suffered revolution, etc., regardless of the presence or absence of Turkey.Similarly, the British-German naval battles are afforded more space than was necessary. That Britain maintained control of the seas was never in doubt, even when fighting a general fleet action (i.e. Jutland). However, I can see the importance in this case of focussing on the naval preparations, upon which all else depended (the support of France with a sizable field army; the transportation of troops from Canada and Australia, and later the U.S.A.; the feeding and supplying the civilian population of England, etc.). Two whole chapters on Jutland (double the space devoted to the Somme) might be a little excessive, but it's still interesting. The Dardenelles and Jutland chapters also provide the highlight of the book, because it does what Churchill does best - provide an overall strategic sense of the situation, including all the important details. In lesser hands this would lead to a unreadable mass, but Churchill's writing is so clear that it's easy to understand and appreciate each situation in all its complexities. He also combines a healthy dose of analysis, and even makes clear his preferred position. This is not a failing! Good writing presents all the alternatives (which Churchill does), but that does not mean that the author cannot prefer one alternative. The reader may disagree - and a post-colonial liberal reader like myself is likely to often disagree with Churchill! - but that does not dilute the effectiveness and enjoyment of the reading. In conclusion, this abridged version of Churchill's history of WWI is a fascinating and informative read. It is very well written, and in the absence of the full version being easily available, it will do admirably for anyone with an interest in military history. I imagine the 4-star rating that many give this book is because it IS abridged, and they would prefer the full version. That's no reason to deduct a star for this book, which is still excellent in and of itself.

56 of 70 people found the following review helpful. don't be mislead - this is abridged By Jeff I would love to read Churchill's World Crisis - but only in the original set. This is a condensed version, and reading it would be like reading an abridgment of Gibbon. If anyone knows where I can get the complete text, please send me a message and let me know.

By rakko I always wanted to know more about Maurice Nicoll, He wrote this book under the pseudonym, Martin Swayne. I gives some insight as to his feelings and his reactions to his earlier military/medical experiences. ("A slice of life" of the zeitgeist of that era and location.) I give it 5 stars because of my acute interest in Maurice Nicoll.
