"But she has had an easy life, surrounded by kind, affectionate, sympathising friends, while I—miserable woman that I am—have been worried, brow-beaten, robbed, till nothing is left me but ill-health and grinding poverty." "Mother, mother dear, don't talk so while I am left you and have enough to keep us both, with care and economy," entreated Evelyn in a voice half choked with sobs. "It will be joy to me to share with you and do all I can to make your last days comfortable and happy." "Then you haven't lost all your love for your mother in our years of separation?" "No, no indeed!" answered Evelyn earnestly. But there the conversation ended for the time, Mrs. Leland returning with the promised refreshment. It seemed to[...]".

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. None By a bookworm The original Elsie Dinsmore series are wonderful, but if someone has not read the previous 18 books, I see how this novel was hard to understand. I recomend the shorter 8 book Elsie Dinsmore: a Life of Faith series for those who find the originals hard to read. They're updated for the modern reader. This particular story follows Elsie's children; her daughter Vi, Vi's husband and their four children, Elsie's son Edward and his young wife Zoe, and Elsie's eldest daughter, Elsie, and her husband and son. I find the series delightful, a bit old-fshioned ,yes, but I enjoy them. I was saddened to read reviews by some who don't seem to appreciate Elsie's Christian values and kindness.

When organizations apply old methods of problem-solving to new kinds of problems, they may accomplish only temporary fixes or some ineffectual tinkering around the edges. Today's problems are a new breed -- open, complex, dynamic, and networked -- and require a radically different response. In this book, Kees Dorst describes a new, innovation-centered approach to problem-solving in organizations: frame creation. It applies "design thinking," but it goes beyond the borrowed tricks and techniques that usually characterize that term. Frame creation focuses not on the generation of solutions but on the ability to create new approaches to the problem situation itself.

The strategies Dorst presents are drawn from the unique, sophisticated, multilayered practices of top designers, and from insights that have emerged from fifty years of design research. Dorst describes the nine steps of the frame creation process and illustrates their application to real-world problems with a series of varied case studies. He maps innovative solutions that include rethinking a store layout so retail spaces encourage purchasing rather than stealing, applying the frame of a music festival to understand late-night problems of crime and congestion in a club district, and creative ways to attract young employees to a temporary staffing agency. Dorst provides tools and methods for implementing frame creation, offering not so much a how-to manual as a do-it-yourself handbook -- a guide that will help practitioners develop their own approaches to problem-solving and creating innovation.

Frame Innovation: Create New Thinking by Design (Design Thinking, Design Theory), by Kees Dorst

Review

Kees Dorst manages in his new book Frame Innovation: Create New Thinking by Design to provide a practical new approach to design-led innovation. His frame creation approach enables the addressing of difficult and wicked problems through the use of design thinking. All managers who run firms that want to compete on value rather than cost should familiarize themselves with this approach. I commend this book to the global business community.

(Göran Roos, Professor in Strategic Design, Faculty of Design, Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia; coauthor of Managing Intellectual Capital in Practice)

Studies show that a key aspect of the creative ways in which designers think and work is problem-framing, or generating perspectives that engender new understanding of the problem and offer bridges to new solutions. Kees Dorst skillfully explains and develops this concept, illustrates its application with real, complex, and contemporary examples, and shows how teams and organizations can work in this creative, innovative, and designerly way.

(Nigel Cross, Emeritus Professor of Design Studies, The Open University, UK)

A fascinating journey into problem-solving for the twenty-first century. Dorst goes beyond the superficial fads and ready-made recipes of popular design thinking cookbooks and provides a robust and clear framework for why and how design can address problems in our society and economy. I will use it with my business school students.

(Roberto Verganti, Professor of Leadership and Innovation, Politecnico di Milano; author of Design-Driven Innovation)

About the Author

Kees Dorst is Professor of Design Innovation at the University of Technology, Sydney. He is the author of Understanding Design: 175 Reflections on Being a Designer and the coauthor of Design Expertise.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This book reframes design thinking ... but misses the link to systems thinking By Philippe Vandenbroeck Kees Dorst’s book on ‚frame innovation’ seeks to position design thinking as uniquely qualified to help us come to grips with the wicked - i.e. open, complex, dynamic, and networked - problems of our times.More particularly, Dorst wants to foreground a strand of design thinking that obeys a specific rationale of ‚reframing’. Its aim is not to provide solutions to a well-specified problem but to put these issues in a new light so that unthought of possibilities for desirable change can emerge. So in a way this book constitutes an attempt to reframe ‚design thinking’ away from a mere set of tools to generate solutions to a generic but structured approach to create novel approaches to knotty problem situations. The heart of the book is a 9-step ’method’ that actually uses the open and dynamic nature of the challenges it seeks to attack to its advantage. Their wickedness shouldn’t intimidate and paralyze us. It is as much an invitation to question received opinions, step out of defined roles and try out new approaches. The framing method is not a radical departure from the classical design thinking toolbox. A lot will be familiar to professionals in the field of design-driven innovation. Distinctive is the nexus from ‚paradox’ to ‚field’ to ‚theme’ to ‚frame’. This in an intellectual movement that meshes synthesis, contextual analysis, lateral thinking and abstraction to yield novel perspectives on a problematic situation. But it’s not a cookbook approach that unfailingly delivers an ‚aha’ experience. Dorst helpfully illustrates the approach through a large number of cases in a variety of settings (although a large majority of them are public sector projects). The core insights presented by Frame Innovation are really valuable. However, I have a few gripes with the book.First, the author has a scholarly temperament and the core argument is embedded in a rich and layered discussion on the nature of the design activity that is littered with conceptual frameworks. On the whole I appreciated that that but readers who like to cut quickly to the chase may lose their patience.More grieving I found the relative insularity of the whole argument. Dorst briefly discusses the fit of the frame innovation approach with traditional innovation management. There is also a fleeting reference to Saras Sarasvathy’s theory on effectual entrepreneurship. But he misses an opportunity to establish a very solid and pertinent link with the realm of systems thinking. There is no doubt that frame innovation meshes well with approaches such as soft systems methodology, critical systems thinking and causal layered analysis.A key element of the Frame Innovation approach is its final step - Integration - whereby the capacity for reframing is embedded in organizational routines. Given the potentially disruptive nature of the approach this will very likely generate resistance. So this is where frame innovation connects to change management. The discussion here is rather sparse and I had a distinct feeling that Dorst's real interest lies elsewhere. Finally, the book is relatively weak in documenting the mechanics of applying the methodology. The cases provide a macro view but it is left to the reader to translate this into practical terms. Dorst keeps referring to 2-hour framing workshops but I wondered what exactly these sessions entailed and how they were ran.Altogether this is an important addition to the innovation literature and with a few caveats in mind I certainly recommend it.

By Noah Fang I’m super excited and inspired (many parts of it are resonant to me):The author defines many core concepts about design, such as design as a form of feasoning and the levels of design expertise and design thinking,And he actually lays out a blueprint for thinking out-of-the-box (he calls it “frame creation model”).The Frame Creation Model, in a nutshell, asks us to explore the problem space and its context before making any defining assumptions about the root causes of the problem. In the early “exploring” phase, we need to zoom out – expend the problem space, question the the origial intention, attack the context, and come up with as many themes (which is basically how we describe the problem space from a certain perspective) as possible. In the later “converging” phase, we need to zoom in – consolidate the possibilities and converge to the final solution. That zoom-out-and-then-zoom-in implies that the assumptions are only made midway through, not early on – that’s critical to approach a problem in the appropriate way.Too many times we make certain assumptions early on and that automatically limits the approaches we may take on a problem, and therefore limits the possibilities of solving the problem in an organic and innovative way.Throughout the book there many great case studies that really make me think how we should approach any problem.Highly recommended!

I don't know of any other book so far that looks at the area of "framing" and looking at how we set up the problem to create a path for an innovative solution. The book had some very interesting ideas as well as a model to approach and understand innovation from top designers.A good contribution to design thinking.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Advice For Anyone Considering A Franchise Ownership By Kate Johansson A "Brass Tacks," tell-it-like-it-is primer on all the ins and out of buying a franchise. Lots of valuable cautionary advice and stories of people who had successes in franchise ownership as well as folks who rushed into a franchise ownership only to find it was not a match for them. O'Brien urges everyone to really study all aspects of owning a franchise--from whether following a strict system is a match for your personality to whether the operating hours of the business will work for your situation. And she warns that franchises are AWARDED, not PURCHASED, so having the correct approach and attitude throughout the interactions with the franchisor is paramount to success in achieving the goal of ownership. Surprisingly to me, O'Brien says that having a franchise coach does not cost the buyer additional funds. The franchisors see so much value in a coach, they pay the fee. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Bud, or Buddy, is a bad tempered, horse racing, angry, young con artist who is asking for trouble. At least that is how I see him. The story is more like a series of events that kind of don't go together and you wonder what the whole point of the story WAS? It makes me wonder why a female author, B. M. Bower, is writing from the point of view of a male character? Why not the female point of view?Zane Grey this is not and, frankly, a bad Zane Grey is better than a good any other western author, including this one.DON'T waste money and TIME on this book. Too bad nobody else had a review on it before me, maybe I could have saved myself the read.

By DKeary Great book for anyone looking to understand how to manage their financial future in a practical way. Couples should definitely read considering finance is the leading stress on a partnership or marriage. The author's style is clear, concise and casual. I've found financial books to sometimes be preachy or can leave the reader with the feeling that managing your financial future is a daunting and/or depressing-- Motske's style is anything but!

I rate it primarily on originality, plot and pacing, and the ability to mask the identity of the culprit to the very end. This may be one of the most original crime novels ever written. I'm of the opinion that this may be the first ever "Procedural" type of crime story. Where the story is revealed bit by bit as the facts become available, and in a logical sequence that doesn't stretch the reader's credulity, while at the same time taking numerous twists and turns along the way. Anyone familiar with the style of CSI or Law and Order would easily recognize the way the story is built up. And the surprise ending? A surprise! What else could it be. You won't be able to figure out who the murderer is until the very end.Though written in the third person, there is no omniscience at work in this story, all of the action is seen through the eyes of the main character, or, through what other characters say in his presence. We follow the main character through the story as he discovers the facts of the case, right up to the very end. This allows the reader to stay abreast of the story, with no marvelous intuition guiding the story to conclusion. This isn't Sherlock Holmes, or Hercule Poirot, summing it all up as simply a logical deduction to anyone with the ability to reason it out, no, this is a step-by-step resolution of the crime using clues to the story gathered along the way. This is the best work by this author that I have read.

The writing is sometimes a bit stiff and pompous, but the plot is satisfyingly dense, the mystery is intriguing, and the atmosphere and characterization (which are the point of the whole thing) are top-notch. My favourite was the old stamp dealer who exclaims, "You think and argue on modern lines -- which are, of course, highly superior."

Chesterton was happy to do some spoofery of the deductive detective genre -- his detectives seemed to depend more on the knowledge of human nature. One good example is Horne Fisher, the star character who solves bizarre little mysteries because he "knows too much... and all the wrong things."The first story opens with a reknowned book critic stumbling across a dead man with his head bashed on. Fortunately Fisher is fishing nearby, and is able to deduce who killed the poor man, when, and cleverly figures out the best (and most theatrical) way to get results. In each story, Horne deals with another strange mystery -- the framing of an Irish "prince" freedom fighter, the vanishing of a priceless coin, a man killed off in the Middle East, an eccentric rich man dies during an obsessive fishing trip, another vanishes during an ice skate, a bizarre dispute over an estate, and most shockingly, a statue crushing his own uncle...Chesterton was a good mystery writer. He could spin up bizarre little crimes (murder, theft, treachery) for a variety of colourful reasons, from the political to purely psychological. "The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a good example of that, and it shows Chesterton veering into more politically-charged territory than in his other mysteries, with the Irish-English conflict, spies and impending war.But these mysteries also have Chesterton the philosopher/theologian/thinker. He writes in colourful, poetic prose ("as if the world were steeped in wine rather than blood"), and has brief moments where Horn muses on human nature."Patriotism is not the first virtue. Patriotism rots into Prussianism when you pretend it is the first virtue," he remarks at one point, as an example. Through him, Chesterton gives us brief little insights into what he knows too much of -- a worldview remarkably simple, but very insightful."The Man Who Knew Too Much" is an odd kind of detective -- instead of the quirky detectives or deep thinkers, Horn is rather melancholy and plaintive, almost tormented by his own knowledge. This comes to a peak in the bittersweet final story, where Horne finds himself in a wretched situation, with shocking results."The Man Who Knew Too Much" is a solid collection of detective stories, but underlying the mysteries are Chesterton's deeper looks at human nature. Excellent reading.

Corzine If you think you're a cynic about politics (or more precisely, about politicians) you've got nothing on GK Chesterton. This is another of his episodic novels in which a series of short stories that stand alone end up making up one single story with the last one bringing all of the threads together and raising them to a climax and resolution. The eponymous man who knew too much is Horne Fisher. And what he knows is all of the key people of the ruling class in England, the tawdry secrets of their personal lives, and the odd and indirect ways that these deform the laws, policies, and administration of justice in the realm. Hypocrisy and gentlemanly corruption are the air they breathe. He knows that most of what you read in the papers is nonsense. In his own words, he knows "everything that isn't worth knowing."In these eight stories of mystery and crime, Fisher's peculiar knowledge allows him to discover who committed each crime and why. Often enough the criminal must go unpunished lest worse things follow. Sometimes the victim is in fact more guilty than the criminal. The other main character is an honest but naive reporter, Harold March, whom Fisher meets and befriends in the first story. March plays Dr. Watson to Fisher's Sherlock Holmes in all eight stories. Until the redemptive climax, Fisher is a sort of tragic figure, upright, honest and unwilling to participate in the wrongdoing, but also unwilling, seemingly unable, to expose his family and their plutocratic circle.I doubt whether England was quite as rotten in 1922 as Chesterton believed. I'm quite sure that America in 2010 is not. But then perhaps that just makes me the man who knows too little. One way or the other, this is a delightful book and highly recommended.

70 of 75 people found the following review helpful. Similar to the Father Brown books By Jesse Rouse The Man Who Knew Too Much is a collection of eight short mystery stories which reminded me greatly of Chesterton's Father Brown stories, except these were not quite as good. I dislike mystery stories where the main character solves the mystery with the aid of a clue that the reader did not have access too. That was one of the reasons why I really like Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries, because if you pay close enough attention and think enough, you can come to the correct conclusion yourself before the answer is announced. Unfortunately, Chesterton does not write all of these stories in that way (though a few of the eight are), and it makes them not as much fun to read, though they are still very good.In terms of content, Chesterton does a fabulous job of bring up moral issues (for example, do we tell the public the truth about murder if it will be harmful to the public?) in these mysteries, and they really make you think. As always, Chesterton has also intersperced the stories with witty yet deep phrases which also make you think, and if you are an underliner you will find many things to underline. In conclusion, this is a good book, but if I were you, I'd read his Father Brown stories before I read these.Overall grade: B+

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fate has a grudge against the foolish secure By H. Schneider Another kind of Bildungsroman: down the ladder, with dignity. A formerly comfortably wealthy businessman learns about the harshness of realities in the urban jungle.Gissing's last novel, published posthumously, was an odd one for him: it came with a happy end. That was not such an easy achievement, considering that its main story is about bankruptcy and social downgrading, a descent from wealth to near poverty. The title hero WW, an almost too decent man (not to be confused with the villain Warburton from Sense and Sensibility), starts out as a reasonably wealthy partner in a sugar business. The time is 1886. Free trade has all but ruined the British sugar industry. Warburton's partner, whom he had seen as an immaculate commercial master, proposes a sure bet for an alternative investment: they wind up their old firm, collect their remaining funds, and go for the acquisition of a jam business.Anticipating that things would go south, I expected the jam business to be a fraud and the due diligence to be faulty, however something else happens, and that is also not unusual: Warburton's partner gambles away all the investment funds at the financial markets for absolutely certain quick money.WW is nearly bankrupt, and on top of it he has given away his mother's and sister's only source of income. He uses his few remaining means to buy a grocery shop and launches his future in that line. He experiences adjustment trouble with harsh realities of the business world: for his own profitability, he can't be charitable towards his poor customers, nor empathize with his competitors who have large families and drinking wives. Every penny of his own income comes at the expense of somebody else. He is appalled at the struggle.Eventually he will find a new equilibrium on a lower level, including love and happiness.During his decline, some acquaintances from his social circle experience a social rise and decide that WW is not their social match any more.Among the half dozen Gissing novels that I have read now, I would not rank this one highly. The main character is too smooth, too decent. The plot is too `instructive', the tale is told in an often too dry and theoretical language. The uplifting morale is a bit too uplifting. I think I rather stick with his depressions, like in Exile or the Odd Women.Still, what a pity that a decent edition is lacking. The one that I have been reading meets the bare necessities. Its printing errors are easily spotted. The subject matter is not so complicated or specialized that it would require much in terms of explaining notes.

Gissing's Romance of Real Life By Robin Friedman George Gissing's (1857 - 1903) last completed novel "Will Warburton: a Romance of Real Life" was published posthumously in 1904. Frequently overlooked or downplayed among his works, "Will Warburton" shows marked shifts for Gissing. Moving from his characteristic pessimism, Gissing's novel is indeed a romance that ends happily in a successful courtship and marriage between two people much in love. In the book, Gissing's hero moves from the ranks of the upper-middle class to a lower social strata. The novel is set in London against the background of greed, business speculation and financial ruin. Thus it has a disquietingly contemporary feel.As the book opens, Will Warburton, young, open-hearted and generous, is in the business of refining sugar with his improvident and scheming friend Godfrey Sherwood. With the businese experiencing difficulties, Sherwood proposes that the pair cut their losses in sugar refining and become involved instead in the manufacture of jam. Warburton acquires the necessary capital from his aging mother and his sister, who sell a treasured family property to finance the venture. To keep them from penury, Warburton plans on paying his mother and sister a varying share of interest from the profits of the jam business. Alas the business comes to naught. Sherwood quickly loses Warburton's capital, as well as his own, in a stock market speculation. Warburton is ruined. With his small remaining funds and the assistance of a man named Allchief, a brusque individual who tends to engage in fighting when unoccupied with work, Warburton opens a small grocery store under the name of Jollyman. Gissing makes much of Warburton giving up his business dress and wearing instead the apron of a grocer as reflective of his diminution in class. Warburton keeps his new occupation, a distinct step down in his own eyes and in the eyes of others, a secret in order to save his mother and sister from embarrassment. The shop prospers and Warburton is able to pay his mother and sister the promised minimal return on their capital. But Warburton remains ashamed and ambivalent about his new career. He also feels guilty over his secrecy and deception. The novel sets off Warburton's upper class friends with his newly-acquired friends to the detriment, on the whole, of the former. Warburton's story is contrasted with that of a young painter and friend, Norbert Franks, whose efforts Warburton had encouraged at an early stage of Frank's career with loans. Franks had aspired to serious art, but he becomes a portrait painter who achieves great financial success with no artistic distinction. In his poor days, Frank had tried to win the love of a beautiful amateur painter, Rosamund Evan, who accepts his marriage proposal but then jilts him. Frank then courts a poor but talented artist, Bertha Cross. With the seeming end of the relationship between Franks and Rosamund, Warburton cautiously tries to court Rosamund. She is responsive at first but ends the relationship abruptly when she visits the grocery store and sees that Warburton is the proprietor, Jollyman. Rosamund then returns to Franks whom, up until the discovery of Jollyman, she had continued to spurn. Franks is all-too-willing to leave Bertha for the beautiful Rosamund, even though Rosamund had earlier abandoned him. Warburton begins courting Bertha who is able to look to his heart and not to his grocer's apron. She accepts him. Warburton continues his modest life as a grocer with its independence. He becomes free of social cant and open and accepting about his position in life. The married couple, Franks and Rosamund want little to do with their former friend Warburton, and Gissing is emphatic that Warburton is well rid of them.In Gissing's best-known novel, "New Grub Street", which tells of literary life in Victorian London, Gissing draws a portrait of a poor, serious writer, Biffen, who does not write to please the multitudes. Biffen works diligently on a work of social realism that has no chance of achieving popularity, a novel called "Mr Bailey: Grocer". The novel explores the lives of those whom Biffen calls the "ignobly decent". In a climactic scene in "New Grub Street", Biffen rushes into a burning building to save the manuscript of "Mr. Bailey:Grocer" from destruction. "Will Warburton" is Gissing's own "Mr. Bailey: Grocer" with its portrayal of the unglamorous but stolidly honest life of the hero. In its portrait of love and romance, "Will Warburton" also bears resemblances to another earlier Gissing work, the short novel "Eve's Ransom"(1895)in which the young protagonist, Maurice Hilliard, loses the woman he loves to a wealthier man but finds peace and independence for himself.Unfortunately little read today, "Will Warburton" explores Gissing's familiar themes of love relationships, art, and commerce, with a light, humorous touch and, most importantly, a great deal of hope. Gissing ended his career fittingly with this novel. "Will Warburton" deserves to be remembered and read.Robin Friedman

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Coda By disco75 This novel examines the qualities of character that lifted (or sank) persons of the working and monied classes of Victorian England. It is similar in tone to Gissing's "Eve's Ransom" in that it observes how a principled young man might navigate difficult dilemmas. It is similar to that book also because it uses romance among the young adults as a way of forwarding the plot. This was written during Gissing's final months, when he was dying of emphysema. It was published posthumously. The author's struggles with energy are evident in the short chapters and in the somewhat under-developed story. On the other hand, the spare, straight-ahead quality of the novel give it a briskness and tempo missing in the more philosophical novels like *Born In Exile.* Even in these compromised writing conditions, Gising's talent shines bright. I found it difficult to put the book down, especially in the second half.

In Elephant House, photographer Dick Blau and historian Nigel Rothfels offer a thought-provoking study of the Oregon Zoo’s Asian Elephant Building and the daily routines of its residents—human and pachyderm alike. Without an agenda beyond a desire to build a deeper understanding of this enigmatic environment, Elephant House is the result of the authors’ unique creative collaboration and explores the relationships between captive elephants and their human caregivers.

Blau’s evocative photographs are complex and challenging, while Rothfels’s text offers a scholarly and personal response to the questions that surround elephants and captivity. Elephant House does not take sides in the debate over zoos but focuses instead on the bonds of attentiveness between the animals and their keepers. Accompanied by a foreword from retired elephant keeper Mike Keele, Elephant House is a frank, fascinating look at the evolving world of elephant husbandry.

Review

“You think you know all there is to know about elephants in captivity? Think again. Setting aside the familiar screeds and sentiments, Dick Blau and Nigel Rothfels offer a deep, multidimensional, and nuanced understanding of our relationship to zoo elephants, one that will challenge the animal rights critic and zoo advocate alike. The wonder and sadness evoked by the checkered history of elephant exhibition, the difference and commonality that bind these majestic animals to the people who care for them—it’s all here. You may not change your mind about the keeping of elephants in captivity after reading this book, but you’ll see the fuller picture. And it will be impossible to come away from Elephant House unmoved.”

—Ben A. Minteer, Arizona State University

“These photographs are mesmerizing. . . . Blau’s photographs do not return us to a state of innocence with these animals. While the tenderness with which they are cared for is clear and their alert intelligence undeniable, these images haunt us because they forcefully convey how different this consciousness is from our own. Their intelligence, together with their beauty and magnificence, for a brief moment relieves us of our egoistical insistence on our imagined primacy as a species.”

—Tom Knechtel, Artillery

So many people discredit those who work with these animals and often twist words when they try to defend themselves! Trainers will plead "Please...just observe for yourself" and these folks did.....for an extended length of time at that.Thank you!

"[...] A Preface With Some Revised Ideas IT HAS BEEN ten years since I wrote the prefatory "Declaration" to this now enlarged and altered book. Not to my generation alone have many things receded during that decade. To the intelligent young as well as to the intelligent elderly, efforts in the present atmosphere to opiate the public with mere pictures of frontier enterprise have a ghastly unreality. The Texas Rangers have come to seem as remote as the Foreign Legion in France fighting against the Kaiser. Yet this Guide, extensively added to and revised, is mainly concerned, apart from the land and its native life, with frontier backgrounds. If during a decade a man does not change his mind on some things and develop new points of view, it is a pretty good sign that his mind is petrified and need no longer be accounted among the living. I have an inclination to rewrite the "Declaration," but maybe I was just as wise on some matters ten years ago as I am now; so I let it stand.[...]".
