Good and Easy Read By Dan Eagle Eye I have been curious about the bible as I have realized how little I really I know about what is contained in the writings. Plus the writer has written in a very readable style. I am not a New Testament scholar and can't speak to a critical evaluation of the content of this book. It has gotten me to keep exploring the issues he has raised.

Interesting read By Bilbo Black This book was an OK read but nothing special.Author gives some good information as to some insight about the content of the book.Unfortunately the author gets a little "wordy" instead of just giving us a translation. If you are interested in the Gospel of Pete, I am sure there are better books but again you can't beat free.

George Manville FennBefore recording my review of this novel I must register a strong complaint to Amazon and the producer of this book. There were a number of misspelled words and even groups of words throughout the text which, sometimes, led to confusion. The most blatant error is :"Chapter 26 Page 172 and 173, the first two pages to Chapter XXVI, are missing from the scan. We will continue to try to find what was upon them".Since receiving my kindle fire as a Christmas gift and being introduced to "out of print" free kindle books offered by Amazon, George Manville Finn has become one of my favorite authors. I have read well over a dozen of his novels and have rated most all of them with a 5 star review. I must say this one was somewhat disappointing.Kate Wilton's father dies, leaving his fortune to his young, beautiful (but, seemingly frail) daughter, who is not quite of age. He appoints his brother, James Wilton, as executor . Well, of course, every man around wants the money and the girl. Therein lies the plot. The major theme of the novel is: MONEY, GREED, MONEY, GREED, MONEY, GREED, LOVE.In my estimation the money, greed thing is easily believable . But the love part is a little too far fetched for me. Each time love comes on the scene, it is in the most unfathomable or ridiculous manner. With that flaw, I can't really rate this a 5 star novel, I would give it 4 stars. But I must deduct at least 1 star for the printing / proof reading blunders. This is my opinion. If you disagree (or if you agree), please post your review to let me, and everyone else, know your thoughts

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. wonderful book By Ruellia I loved this book as a child, reading my grandmother's green copy, which I now have, and I reread it a few years ago and loved it just as much. The description of the excavations for the London harbor are fascinating, the listening gallery at St. Paul's, Rollo's uncle explaining to him that in English hotels you have your meals brought up to your rooms as the English do not like to eat together in dining areas, but prefer their privacy. It is all lively and engaging, and a vivid close up view of 19th century London tourist life. You feel that you are there.Putting it on the Kindle was a noble deed. I think people should read it to their children and teacher's can use it for young pupils and adults should read it as there is information about living in London that you do not find elsewhere and it makes it all come alive. We forget the enormous power and influence of London at that time, and how far flung its commerce was. All of that is there, along with manners and custom and the beautiful places to visit like the Tower, etc.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Rollo in London By Ruellia My copy of Rollo in London is dated 1873 and gives the publishers as Sheldon and Co, 677 Broadway, New York.I highly recommend this text for adults as well as children. It is full of information and vivid views of daily life in London; you have the feeling that you are there, walking down the street, crossing London bridge, leaving the train station, visiting St. Paul's, viewing the great shipyards. It is full of information about London's commerce as well. There is also a $6 kindle version of all ten of the Rollo books for his continental tour, but the original was so beautifully bound (a dark green with black curlicues and gilt lettering) that it seems a shame not to have Rollo in London in what appears to be a handsome cover with real pages to turn.

Is China building a new empire in rural Africa? Over the past decade, China's meteoric rise on the continent has raised a drumbeat of alarm. China has 9 percent of the world's arable land, 6 percent of its water, and over 20 percent of its people. Africa's savannahs and river basins host the planet's largest expanses of underutilized land and water. Few topics are as controversial and emotionally charged as the belief that the Chinese government is aggressively buying up huge tracts of prime African land to grow food to ship back to China. In Will Africa Feed China?, Deborah Brautigam, one of the world's leading experts on China and Africa, probes the myths and realities behind the media headlines. Her careful research challenges the conventional wisdom; as she shows, Chinese farming investments are in fact surprisingly limited, and land acquisitions modest. Defying expectations, China actually exports more food to Africa than it imports. Is this picture likely to change? African governments are pushing hard for foreign capital, and China is building a portfolio of tools to allow its agribusiness firms to "go global." International concerns about "land grabbing" are well-justified. Yet to feed its own growing population, rural Africa must move from subsistence to commercial agriculture. What role will China play? Moving from the halls of power in Beijing to remote irrigated rice paddies of Africa, Will Africa Feed China? introduces the people and the politics that will shape the future of this engagement: the state-owned Chinese agribusiness firms that pioneered African farming in the 1960s and the entrepreneurial private investors who followed them. Their fascinating stories, and those of the African farmers and officials who are their counterparts, ground Brautigam's deeply informative, deftly balanced reporting.Forcefully argued and empirically rich, Will Africa Feed China? will be a landmark work, shedding new light on China's evolving global quest for food security and Africa's possibilities for structural transformation.

Review "Engagingly written with scholarly rigour... an essential read for those concerned with China's growing presence in Africa, the charged debate on 'land grabbing' and the future of Africa's agricultural development." --China Dialogue

"Debates about China's involvement in Africa, particularly around land and agriculture, are frequently ill-informed. This book challenges the myths and explores the realities on the ground through a series of fascinating cases. Anyone interested in the global politics of land and food, and the role of China and Africa, should read this highly informative and engagingly-written book." --Ian Scoones, Professorial Fellow, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex

"Will Africa Feed China? is a delight. It shows investigative social science at its best as it explores - with simplicity and clarity-the truth behind widespread claims of China's rapidly expanding footprint all over Africa. It should be read by anyone who wishes to go behind the headlines about the world order undergoing transformative change as China surges and the United States loses ground." --Robert H. Wade, Professor, Department of International Development, London School of Economics

"A sequel to her highly acclaimed book, The Dragon's Gift, Deborah Brautigam, once again based on penetrating field studies, provides a fascinating account of the facts of Chinese agricultural investment in Africa to dispel many widespread false accusations about China's intentions and activities in African agriculture. This is a timely book for anyone concerning about the destiny of African people and China's role in African development." --Justin Yifu Lin, Professor and Honorary Dean, National School of Development, Peking University, and Former Chief Economist, World Bank

"Will Africa Feed China? is another myth-busting classic from one of the world's leading scholars of China's overseas economic policies." -Thomas J. Christensen, Princeton University, Author of The China Challenge: Shaping the Choices of a Rising Power

"Cogent analysisELBrautigam cuts her own swathe through myths about this relationship." - Nature Magazine

"Essential reading for any journalist or NGO practitioner wishing to stake a claim on China's engagement in Africa and what it means for Africa's development." - China Dialogue

"Engagingly written with scholarly rigourEL an essential read for those concerned with China's growing presence in Africa, the charged debate on 'land grabbing' and the future of Africa's agricultural development." - Financial Times

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Excellent By Autamme_dot_com For quite a few years China’s “expansionist policy” and global ambition has been the subject of many press headlines. The country, it is said, has visions of empire, seeking foreign outposts with the aim of supplying food and other raw materials to satisfy its own growing demand. Africa is one key area, it is claimed, and large chunks of the country have already been sold to Chinese companies. Is this true?Well the author seems to treat such ambitious, intriguing and possibly inflammatory stories with a large degree of scepticism. If the country has been trying to buy up huge tracts of Africa, to employ predominantly Chinese workers who will grow and ship food back, it either has not done such a great job thus far or it has been incredibly successful at hiding its endeavours.Certainly it appears that the author has done her research. All of the claims investigated are supported by extensive sources. There is nothing to suggest that the evidence presented is not correct. Many news reports and claims do get debunked in what appears to be a comprehensive manner. It does seem amazing that so many reports could be so wrong, although as the author notes if a respected news source reports a claim, there is a tendency for it to be echoed around the world as fact. How or why have so many people seemingly got so muddled up, or to use a slightly off-colour British phrase “arse about face”? The author notes that Chinese farming investments are in fact “surprisingly” limited and land acquisitions modest; China exports more food to Africa than it imports. African governments are generally desperately seeking foreign investment (no matter what they may say to the domestic audience) and China, like others, has its fair share of pioneering business explorers, yet the limited, tentative steps made so far have hardly been successful or large-scale.What are the motives for those who may be pushing a false agenda? If even the economist of the African Development Bank will author a report claiming China is the biggest “land grabber” in the world, surely in Africa they should know the real truth? The author seems to be knocking down the claims like pins at a bowling alley. As the author writes: “The first belief, echoed in the chief economist’s statement, is that the Chinese have actually acquired very large areas of farmland in Africa. Many media stories have featured Chinese companies (or, more commonly, simply ‘China’ or ‘the Chinese’) as central players in African land acquisitions. Second, it is widely believed that the Chinese government is leading the effort to acquire land in Africa as part of a grand plan, using its state-owned enterprises and sovereign wealth funds. Third, the conventional wisdom holds that the Chinese have developed a voracious appetite for African grain. Finally, many believe that the Chinese have sent (or plan to send) large numbers of their own farmers to settle in the continent. For example, The Economist newspaper repeated (without endorsing) a report that more than a million Chinese farmers were cultivating crops in Africa.”The author is adamant – “None of the stories above turned out to be true.” China’s policies talk about increasing foreign investment (but so do many other countries) but nothing has been discovered to suggest there is a plan for massive, large-scale investment in land or African agriculture. The author notes “…surprisingly few of the Chinese investments headlined in media stories have actually taken place. No one has yet identified a village full of Chinese farmers anywhere on the continent.”For the investments and trials that have taken place, the outcomes have often turned out to be euphemistically described as “problematic”; many myths are circulating as facts, ambitious plans transform to meagre realities and perhaps a lot of hot air has been expended by parties with vested interests to pump matters up.Large, structural and practical problems exist, particularly in African agriculture, that won’t be solved overnight. Some of the investments made are speculative, some come from people with no agricultural background and definitely with no state-provided finance. “Why does Africa import so much food, when it has some of the world’s largest expanses of arable land? The simple answer is technology: Europe’s 18th century agricultural revolution has yet to reach much of rural Africa. With 54 countries, the continent has an enormous variety, and no country’s story is exactly the same as another’s. Yet overall, the statistics are striking. Some 65 per cent of ploughing, cultivating and harvesting operations rely solely on human muscle – no animal traction or machinery. Up to 20 per cent of harvests rot in poor storage or are lost to pests, compared to only two per cent in the United States,” notes the author. It hardly sounds a prime investment opportunity; even with the entire might of the Chinese state possibly lurking in the shadows. How is there so much confusion? The author quite diplomatically states it as “In some cases, a Chinese firm was interested, but the investment still failed to go forward. In others, however, those compiling the databases mistakenly tagged an investment as a Chinese land acquisition when it was actually a company from another country. They labelled an initial statement of interest or a memorandum of understanding as a signed contract, and failed to follow up. There was almost no investigative reporting on these cases – journalists repeated them, but almost never inquired further. Surprisingly, as we will see, some researchers did go to Africa to investigate the most sensational cases, yet their published research was not picked up by the hundred members of the International Land Coalition, which in April 2012 still included in their database debunked Chinese “land acquisitions” in Africa totalling nearly 3 million hectares.”There’s more: “More to the point: the Internet is a wonderful tool, but it creates a challenge for those seeking to know the real dimensions of phenomena like foreign land acquisitions in far-away places. As we saw in the case of Mozambique, poorly-checked stories can multiply, with fiction popping up as fact in books and articles by writers who assume, because it appeared in a well-regarded newspaper like The Economist, or The Guardian, or a respected website hosted by a top-ranked think tank, it must be true. Furthermore, we now live in an era of ‘big data’ and ‘killer facts.’ In the social sciences, many students learn that as long as they have access to a dataset, they can write dissertations about development without ever visiting a developing country.”Of course, this could all be an elaborate cover story, being set up on the orders of Beijing. The balance of probabilities and a cup of strong coffee tend to point in the author’s favour, however. To the question “Have the Chinese acquired large areas of farmland in Africa?” the author answers: “No – or at least, not yet. If Chinese companies had actually acquired all the land they were alleged to have acquired since 2000, they would have ‘grabbed’ nearly 6 million hectares, just under one per cent of all of the arable land on the continent. Yet as we have seen, Chinese agribusinesses have actually acquired very little land in Africa. Even including all the farms acquired in the 1990s, and the GMG Global plantations in West Africa, Chinese companies still hold fewer than 250,000 hectares of African land, an area roughly equivalent to twice the size of New York City. Discouraged by poor infrastructure, political instability, and the sober realization that profits were likely to prove more elusive than hoped, Chinese firms came, explored, and then went elsewhere.”Will they return? Maybe that depends on the pace and willingness for change in individual countries. This book certainly was an engaging, eye-opening read that appears to throw many buckets of cold water on a narrative that many perhaps want to believe is true, to fit pre-ordained opinions and viewpoints. The reader does not even need to care about African or Chinese politics and agriculture to find this a different, passionate and informative book that could give them literary company for many evenings. The book does not seek to portray China as a total innocent who only wants to focus on its own country, even though it struggles to do that at the best of times presently. It was all really fascinating and whilst it can diminish the reader’s “global-marching views” of China, it can and does further act as a wake-up call to many African countries to improve their own lot and that of their inhabitants.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Book Destroys Common Myths About China's Involvement in Africa By Francis Tapon When I first heard the question in the title of this book, I thought the answer was obvious: "Of course not!"China fed itself throughout the 20th century, so why would it need Africa's food in the 21st century?China's population has peaked and will decline throughout this century. Therefore, if China managed to feed itself when it had 1.5 billion, why would it need Africa's assistance when it declines to 1.2 billion (and lower)? In short, I didn't see why one needed an entire book to answer such a simple question. The reason we do is that there are plenty who believe otherwise. And it's not just pot-smoking conspiracy theorists who think that China is taking over vast tracts of African land to cultivate rice for the Chinese. The Economist magazine has trumpeted stories to that effect.Indeed, the author meticulously documents all the publications (mainly of them mainstream ones) that assert this China, Inc. narrative. The book systematically destroys this notion that China is taking over Africa's agriculture to feed its people. Carefully researched and painstakingly argued, the author builds a solid case as to why we need to stop fearing this story. At the same time, the book hedges itself. It often says, "There is no evidence for such a takeover . . . at this time." In other words, the author isn't claiming that it will never happen. She's simply explaining that for now there is insufficient evidence to argue that case.So what is China doing in Africa? The book focuses on agriculture and it seems that China is bumbling through many initiatives in Africa. It's tried many programs. And just like Western aid and intervention has often failed, so has Chinese aid and intervention.China will continue playing a role in Africa and that role will increase in all realms, including agriculture. However, it's unlikely that Africa will feed China. Africa can hardly feed itself - it's a net importer of food.

“This book will provide readers with a greater awareness of the spirit of curiosity and inquiry that lies at the heart of the Buddhist tradition, as well as the fruitfulness of maintaining active communication between the Buddhist and scientific communities.” —from the Foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama

In Humble before the Void, Impey, a noted astronomer, educator, and author gives us a thoroughly absorbing and engaging account of his journey to Northern India to teach in the first-ever “Science for Monks” leadership program. The program was initiated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to introduce science into the Tibetan Buddhist monastic tradition.

In a vivid and compelling narrative, Impey introduces us to a group of exiled Tibetan monks whose charm, tenacity and unbridled enthusiasm for learning is infectious. Impey marvels not only at their enthusiasm, but at their tireless diligence that allows the monks to painstakingly build intricate sand mandalas—that can be swept away in an instant. He observes them as they meticulously count galaxies and notes how their enthusiasm and diligence stands in contrast to many American students who are frequently turned off by science’s inability to deliver easy, immediate payoffs. Because the Buddhist monks have had a limited science education, Impey must devise creative pedagogy. His new students immediately take to his inspired teaching methods, whether it’s the use of balloons to demonstrate the Hubble expansion or donning an Einstein mask to explain the theory of relativity.

Humble before the Void also recounts Impey’s experiences outside the classroom, from the monks’ eagerness to engage in pick-up basketball games and stream episodes of hip American sitcoms to the effects on his relationship with the teenage son who makes the trip with him. Moments of profound serenity and beauty in the Himalayas are contrasted with the sorrow of learning that other monks have set themselves on fire to protest the Chinese oppression in Tibet.

At the end of the three week program, both the monks and Impey have gained a valuable education. While the monks have a greater understanding and appreciation of science, Impey has acquired greater self- knowledge and a deeper understanding of the nature of learning and teaching in the East and West. This understanding leads to a renewed enthusiasm for making his topic come alive for others.

The sheer enthusiasm Impey has for his subject is only matched by the monk's uninhibited desire to learn everything they can. The situation exacts every kind of on-the-spot inventiveness by Chris Impey to convey his subject 'The Cosmos' to the cloistered lives of the monks. They in turn by their presence (both of body and mind) open Impey to a world beyond the simple materialism he works in. It's a wonderful book, to read slowly and enjoy - as well as learn from.

It describes very well the teaching methods and experiences of the author as he traveled to India's border with Tibet and taught a three week class to buddhist monks. The author describes his day to day experiences, his interactions with his students, and observations of life around him during his trip. This book also contains complex cosmologic concepts that are explained in an way the average individual can understand. I bought the kindle version because I wanted to learn more about Buddhism, and I did. But the book contains much more information about astronomy, science, physics, the nature of time.

A superior science primer By Amazon Customer The book appears at a time when the Dalai Lama is attempting to introduce modernity to a people and a religion that have been almost hermetically sealed for centuries. In this context, potential buyers might have the expectation that this is a book illuminates the interaction of a modern science and an ancient religion. This assumption is enhanced by the subtitle of the book, ". . . A Remarkable Encounter Between Western Science and Tibetan Buddhism." On one level it is, but this book is primarily an introduction to astronomy and cosmology, and in that the author succeeds wonderfully. His terrific teaching tools throws light on some of the more obscure aspects of the field. Weaving the reactions of the monks throughout, makes the lectures more interesting but doesn't move us much closer to understanding the deepest complexities of the "remarkable encounter."

The Other "F" Word: How Smart Leaders, Teams, and Entrepreneurs Put Failure to Work, by John Danner, Mark Coopersmith

From the Inside Flap

Everyone wants success. Organizations want greater innovation, stronger growth, and deeper employee engagement. If you're an executive, entrepreneur or team member, you know how hard that is to do. The good news is you're sitting on a largely untapped strategic resource that can help, but most organizations and managers prefer not to talk about it. It's failure, the "Other F Word"—and it's one asset you and your colleagues create and pay for every day. You might as well put it to work.

How? In this provocative book, the authors share failure-savvy insights from exclusive interviews with leaders of large multinationals, small and mid-size businesses, and startup ventures. Danner and Coopersmith add their unique interdisciplinary background and perspectives as executives, entrepreneurs, board members, and advisors to global enterprises and growing companies. As professors at the University of California Berkeley and Princeton, they also contribute their original research and classroom experience with students and executives from around the world.

Their practical 7-stage Failure Value Cycle helps you avoid failure in the first place, recognize it earlier, deal with it better when it happens (which it will), and leverage it to drive stronger performance. Danner and Coopersmith can help you unlock the potential of failure by respecting its inevitability, taking it out of the realm of taboo, talking about it openly, learning from it, and applying its lessons.

Failure's like gravity—a pervasive, powerful fact of life. You may want to defy it, but you can't deny it. And, like gravity itself, failure can be harnessed toachieve the success you want. Managed effectively, it can help you better serve the needs of your customers and investors, build stronger trust within your organization, and inspire greater creativity, commitment, and confidence across your organization.

Tap into the power of The Other "F" Word to reap the rewards of a more failure-positive approach to your organization's most important priorities. Put failure to work today!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. what wasted opportunity – to fail to learn from your failures By Randy Mayeux Danner and Coopersmith are not high on the Silicon Valley mantra “Fail early, fail often, fail forward” (they figure we’ve heard it enough), but they do have plenty to say about Failure, that other “F” word.Let’s start here:You will fail. Probably fairly often.Your team, your company or organization will fail. Probably fairly often. And, you will probably fail to learn from your failure(s). Probably fairly often. (This, by the way, may be the real killer!)So, what wasted opportunity – to fail to learn from your failures. From the book:Failure is one resource you and your organization create virtually every day. It’s the result of the mistakes you and your colleagues make, the unfortunate results of good faith by hard-working teams, the superiority of your competition or adversaries, or even the bad luck events that upset your organizations’ best-laid plans. …Failure is an everyday reality leaders and teams must address. Now, if you have never failed at anything, large or small, you can probably skip this book. But, there’s a pretty good chance you have to work with others who are not quite as failure-proof as you. So, you need to understand others’ battles with failure in order to help them. And, if you have ever failed (so far today; this week; this year; this decade), then this book will help you understand what happened, “respect” your failure, learn from it, and become just a little bit smarter about your failures.I like it when authors include their own “this is what we are writing about; and here is our summary of the key elements” section. These authors do that. (They have taught this in class form at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business). They include a pretty sharp “Seven-stage Failure Value Cycle Framework.” With masterful use of alliteration, they have seven stages all beginning with the letter “R.” Here are the first two:#1 – Respect the power and likelihood of failure.#2 – Rehearse for your most significant failure scenarios to develop better, faster reflexes. (great advice – R.M).Since you have failed, and you will fail again, this is a book to buy and read to get ready for your next failure. You probably should get it and read it pretty quickly — you’ll probably have your next failure in about… 20 minutes, or 20 days, or so.

Such corporate cultures are in short supply in our ultra-cautious post-financial crisis era. The two authors have walked the talk for a very long time. Their impressive collective background brings much credibility to their writing. They have had professional positions as organizations’ leaders, senior corporate executives, entrepreneurs, angel investors, management consultants, and business school professors. In addition to their extensive first hand experience (within the Preface, with humor and candor they share some of their failures under the section “Our Failure Bona Fides”), they have done an abundance of research on the subject. This research included reviewing many relevant studies and interviewing a long list of Who’s Who in business, high-tech, innovation, venture capital, and overall corporate leadership. This is a serious business book earmarked for senior executives and entrepreneurs who do have some control over their respective corporate culture or less senior individuals such as MBA students who aspire one day to be senior executives. The authors provide upfront effective tools on how to handle and learn from failure at the organizational level. In the first few pages of the book, they define and diagnose failure over 10 key points. One of those points fleshes out a detailed framework on how to explicitly learn from failure: “Failure Value Cycle.” And, this detailed framework represents the essence of the most pragmatic section of the book (Part III chapters 9-17).Backtracking, Part I defines what failure is with many facts and trends across different industries and activities. Part II shares many real world examples on how numerous businesses have managed to learn from failures (not always well as you can imagine). The authors explore business performances in terms of learning from failure at three very different stages with very different failure implications: start-ups, young but established businesses, and mature and large organizations. Part IV is a concluding section that lifts the main points from the book on how to create a “failure-savvy organization.”Back to the tools, the authors share one really useful one: a Report Card (page 185). By just asking five straightforward questions this Report Card nails down the corporate culture of a workplace. As you read those questions, you may feel like your workplace has much room for improvement regarding the learning from failure bit. This book is rich in examples, insights, and applicable tools. Within this review, I have given the audience just a quick 10,000 feet-high perspective on what this book is about. As you land down to earth’s level, there is a lot more to it. The authors write in a very user-friendly and entertaining way. If you are interested in this subject, I venture that you will very much like this book.If you have read and enjoyed books like Clayton Christensen “The Innovator’s Dilemma”, Peter Thiel “Zero to One,” or Shane Snow “Smart Cuts” you will most probably find this book equally interesting.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The most destructive result of failure is yet another F ... By Neal Reynolds The most destructive result of failure is yet another F word, fear. This book's message is simple enough. Accept failure and learn from it and then move forward. One recalls the story of Thomas Edison who when taunted for the number of failed experiments replied that these weren't failures, but discoveries of what doesn't work. Well, words to that effect anyway. This is no dry textbook. it's a conversational discussion of how to make failure work for you rather than against you. This is of course aimed at business concerns, but it applies also to personal life. This is an important book and I urge you to read and study it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. + Good Writer, but Remember that Scientific Parts are Dated By Bassocantor √ The author's preface states that the theories included here are based on work from 1903, and published in the "Art of Vocalism" in "The Etude" journal. The author hopes that his ideas and discoveries will be used by teachers of singing.▲ Certainly, there is much to like in this classic work--the problem is, many of the key points are now obsolete, or now known to be false. Now, that doesn't mean the material is worthless--it just means outdated. When this book was written in 1911, the theories espoused here were probably well-received.▲ One should not dismiss the entire book as irrelevant or wrong. No, of course, that is not true. For example, I thought Chapter VI, general discussions about resonance, was very insightful. Using a wind instrument, such as the french horn, to illustrate the fact of resonance is a good point. Here's another one--the author points out the fallacy of thinking that the vocal folds themselves produce the power. "The tone produced by the vibrations alone of the two very small vocal bands must, in the nature of things, be very feeble." The experiments suggested by the author in this chapter are really excellent.▲ Probably the biggest problem is the author's emphasis on nasal resonance, discussed in detail in Chapter VII, "Head and Nasal Resonance." For example, "It is only through free nasal resonance that the coordinate resonance in the air sinuses above the nasal cavity and connected with it can be established." Now it is perfectly understandable that 100 years ago, scientists thought there was resonance in the head sinuses. Since it feels like there is, that's not a bad assumption--just a wrong one. For what we known currently on this subject, the works of Johan Sundberg, in particular, would be a good reference.▲ Similarly, the author is adamant that there are no registers. "Chest, middle, head, and all other registers are creations of false education." In 1911, that statement might have been credible, but is clearly false. The different muscles that are used for different registers has been well widely documented and proven by numerous scholars. See, for example, the works of the late Richard Miller.▼ In the Kindle edition, the links to exercises and illustrations appear to be missing. Not sure what the links were supposed to activate. There were no illustrations. I presume the illustrations and figures are present in other editions.▲ "Resonance in Singing and Speaking" was a great book--at that time. For an aspiring singer or voice teacher, it would be much better to read books by modern scholars, using science that is not 100 years dated. For example, the following scholarly works would be a good starting place:Richard Miller, The Structure of Singing: System and Art in Vocal TechniqueJohan Sundberg, The Science of the Singing Voice√ From an historical perspective, this book is still useful, and many of the theories are still valid. The problem is, many of them have been proven false. Excellent writing, just outdated.♫ A Review by Chris Lawson

Disappointing By Reader Hmmm, well, if you're going to sell a title that has exceeded copyright protection - especially one that can be found for free on the internet - shouldn't you AT LEAST include the illustrations and photos from the original source when the text refers to them repeatedly? I mean really! I bought this thinking it would be nice to have a hardcopy on hand for reference even if it costs a little money. Leaving out the illustrations and photos is a glaringly obvious case of not caring about the content of the original work much less the customer for this particular 'packaging' of the text.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent explanation By Amazon Customer I take singing lessons and new these concepts. This book does a brilliant job of explaining the various resonance chambers important for both speech and singing alike. Also, talks about misconceptions. The only negative point about this e-book is that images (e.g. throat, chest cavity) are missing and the explanation refers to them. That part is a bit inconvenient to read, but it's a bit technical, and I could do without the images as I skipped through it. The book is written by a Surgeon to help a patient or practitioner. But, I did not need all that technical detail. The rest of the explanation was enough for me as it lets you know what you are doing when you speak or sing, and gives an idea how you can make use of the resonance chambers or cavities for better speech and singing. Personally, I found the book useful.

Einstein As a physicist with over a decade of experience in science education, I know how difficult it is to find good resources for introductory physics classes. This book is fantastic for what it is. What is it, you ask? It’s a supplement to a first-semester, algebra-based college physics class. It will help students learn to solve problems (not teach students physics on its own) utilizing a humorous, comic book format. If you need some help with algebra-based general physics and enjoy cute comic books then I highly recommend this book.

I didn't take physics in high school and because I am an older student and have a family (= less time to study than my classmates), I wasn't having a great time in class. My husband bought me this book and I took it with me to class every day last semester. What my textbook made seem overly complicated, this book helped to simplify so I could better understand the concepts, figure out the approach needed to solve tasks, etc. My classmates and study group giggled at the cover, but everyone was impressed with the content inside. I also love dinosaurs and can't imagine the book being any different.I'm grateful for this book and really hope the next semester's book will be out soon!PS - my seven-year-old son thinks it's hilarious that the dinosaurs are riding a tree rocket. :)

The concepts are presented in a rigorous but approachable manner, and the graphic novel format keeps your attention throughout. Although the authors have a target audience of college students in mediocre physics classes, I think this book will be useful for students at any level, from those learning the concepts for the first time in high school, to grad students and professionals looking to brush up. I'm looking forward to their follow-up volume!

Peter Drucker's Five Most Important Questions: Enduring Wisdom for Today's Leaders, by Peter F. Drucker, Frances Hesselbein, Joan Snyder Kuhl

Review

“The book is concise but compelling reading, as Peter Drucker’s wisdom is timeless and a most valuable tool for leaders across all generations, and as such, this very readable book is a must for all today’s managers.” (Institute of Management Services Journal, October 2015)

From the Inside Flap

This special edition of Peter Drucker's Five Most Important Questions is filled with insightful guidance and stirring inspiration from contemporary leaders and rising stars. This book is a solution for today's leaders and aspiring talent who are looking for a management resource with a simple method to help them think through what they are doing, why they are doing it, and what they must do to be successful. Known as the "Father of Modern Management" Peter Drucker asserted, "selfassessment is the first action required of leadership." This vital resource gives leaders a practical framework for self-assessment and applying Drucker's time-tested leadership philosophy to their organization. The concepts and framework are applicable across every sector, within every industry as well as the classroom. Drucker's philosophy is as relevant for meeting today's business challenges and opportunities as it was when it was first developed in the midtwentieth century. There are 20 contributors who provide diverse perspectives and real world application of each question demonstrating that innovation in business will still soar from this framework.

For those leading, managing, and working in all three sectors—public, private, and social—Peter Drucker's Five Most Important Questions helps leaders gain a new perspective and develop a solid foundation upon which to build a successful and bright future for themselves and their organizations. Complex and compelling, the questions are as essential as they are relevant and can be applied to any organization. Peter Drucker's Five Most Important Questions is designed for organizational, strategic self-assessment, not for program assessment, or an individual performance review. It starts with the fundamental question "What is our mission?" It addresses the question of the organization's reason for being—its purpose—instead of the how. The questions offer a guide through the process of assessing how well you are doing, ending with a measurable, results-focused strategic plan to further the mission and to achieve the organization's goals, guided by the vision. Concise, clear, and accessible, this important guide is peppered with commentary from distinguished management gurus, contemporary entrepreneurs, and dynamic millennial leaders, including luminaries such as Jim Collins, Marshall Goldsmith, and Judith Rodin while introducing emerging leaders like Adam Braun, Caroline Ghosn, and Michael Radparvar.

Peter Drucker's Five Most Important Questions will challenge leaders and stimulate spirited discussion and action within any organization, inspiring positive change and new levels of excellence. By tapping into the power of the five questions, leaders can identify strengths and challenges, embrace change, foster innovation, accept and respond to customer feedback, look beyond the organization for trends and opportunities, encourage planned abandonment, and demand measurable results.

Enduring Wisdom Is Right By Elizabeth Ghaffari Twenty-six years ago this fall, I registered for the Peter Drucker Lecture Series at Claremont Graduate School, which required a drive of over fifty miles each way from Santa Monica - at night, after work, alone. I had just left the corporate world for the unknown territory of entrepreneurship and had heard that Drucker might have some insight on the subject of managing knowledge and knowledge workers in the emerging information society. The lecture hall was huge and filled to overflowing capacity every night for his solo presentation, sitting on a chair at center stage - this frail, eighty year old man who now walked with a stoop, who spoke with a deep Austrian accent, and who had a dry, wry sense of humor. His wife of fifty-five years, Doris, was seated in the front row to coach him when it was time to take breaks or field questions. She was impressive in her own right – having survived two world wars, earned master's degrees in physics and law, written a memoir of their life together, and was an inventor in her own right. He would speak without any notes non-stop for an hour, take a brief twenty-minute break, then return for another hour of lecture followed by a half hour of questions. He drew extensively from his in-depth research and interviews with senior executives from America and Japan’s largest corporations - leaders who counted him as their closest advisors.Even though he had immersed himself in the early corporate world, he spoke to us about emerging trends that were far more relevant to entrepreneurs like myself. He had an amazing ability to gauge the pulse of the highly mobile and self-motivated emerging knowledge worker. In looking back on my notes from those evenings, his prescience was clear. What I did not realize, then, was the possibility that his wisdom would span another two and a half decades, as it has with Frances Hesselbein's new release of Peter Drucker’s Five Most Important Questions: Enduring Wisdom for Young Leaders (Wiley: March 2015). Ms. Hesselbein has assembled twenty mentors/advisors to provide the wisdom and interpretation of these core concepts. His "five questions" are as relevant for today's business aspirant, especially the Millennials. The contributors have taken special efforts to speak to this generation’s concerns and aspirations, chapter by chapter, in the form of “Millennial Take Aways”.Drucker lived his own advice:"I personally telephone a random sample of fifty or sixty students who graduated ten years earlier. I ask, “Looking back, what did we contribute in this school? What is still important to you? What should we do better? What should we stop doing?” And believe me, the knowledge I have gained has had a profound influence."He anticipated the emergence of our modern social consciousness within the business framework, the rise of the non-profit organization, and the modern mandate that knowledge workers take personal responsibility for their own self-assessment, education, and productivity.Peter Drucker’s Five Most Important Questions is a handbook for entrepreneurial businesses, non-profit organizations, and for the millions of Millennials searching for the same meaningful career as that technology-enthused young entrepreneur who drove a hundred miles round trip for weeks on end to hear the words of one of the wisest men in business.

This will mess with your misinformed mantras!According to Peter Drucker, “All the first rate decision makers I’ve observed had a very simple rule: If you have quick consensus on an important matter, don’t make the decision. Acclamation means nobody has done the homework.”“Bottom line, Drucker is astoundingly more relevant today than ever. He was a Millennial in his thinking before we knew of the Millennials.”That’s the fresh insight and color commentary from Raghu Krishnamoorthy, in the new book "Peter Drucker’s Five Most Important Questions: Enduring Wisdom for Today’s Leaders," by Peter F. Drucker, France Hesselbein, and Joan Snyder Kuhl.My copy of the “Five Questions” book (the 2008 version) has endured almost as many frequent flier miles as I have. So I was delighted when the Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute (formerly the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management) delivered this new hardback—commemorating 25 years of the institute’s work.Still thin enough (90 pages, plus resources and study questions) so both staff and board members will actually read the book, this updated gem walks leaders through “The Five Most Important Questions You Will Ever Ask About Your Organization.” They are:1. What is our mission?2. Who is our customer?3. What does the customer value?4. What are our results?5. What is our plan?Drucker’s brief insights on all five questions are enhanced with new color commentary from a blue ribbon panel of leadership gurus, including: Jim Collins, Marshall Goldsmith, Philip Kotler, Jim Kouzes, Judith Rodin, V. Kasturi Rangan, and many others. Each chapter includes commentary from a Millennial writer—with stunning observations and honesty:Commenting on “Question 3: What Does the Customer Value?” Nadira Hira writes, “It’s so tempting to believe that we know better than ever before what our customers value.” She wonders—thoughtfully—if with all of our mobile connectedness we’re using twenty-first century technology effectively.Hira notes that the best organizations “should never stop at the first, simplest, or most available answer. They dig; they frame, and reframe; they explore all the angles they can imagine to help customers discover deeper truths about their ideal experience. From taking quick advantage of every bit of technology around, to doing as Peter F. Drucker did decades ago—talking, live and in earnest, to real customers old and new—they interrogate.”Preach it! Over my last 10 years of consulting—one theme is consistent. It’s the very rare client that invests significant time, money, research, and snooping to discover real gold in the answers to Question 3: What Does the Customer Value? This 2015 edition delights and surprises:QUESTION 1: WHAT IS OUR MISSION? Heed this wisdom from Jim Collins on sticking to your mission: “Just because something is a once-in-a-lifetime funding opportunity—is merely a fact, not necessarily a reason to act.”QUESTION 2: WHO IS OUR CUSTOMER? On Uber (the global ride-sharing service) and other disrupters: “Of course, the traditional taxi drivers are outraged, and some cities have banned Uber because it is threatening the well-oiled machine of mediocrity.”QUESTION 3: WHAT DOES THE CUSTOMER VALUE? Jim Kouzes: “Everything exemplary leaders do is about creating value for their customers.”QUESTION 4: WHAT ARE OUR RESULTS? Adam Braun’s “Millennial Takeaway” notes: “At one point a few years ago when we had built just a few schools, I wrote in my journal that if Pencils of Promise built 30 schools by the time I turned 30, I could die a happy man. Today we’ve opened more than 150. But here’s the important part—I was wrong about being able to die a happy man. I still want to do so much more. As soon as something becomes possible, you start thinking of what you can do next.”QUESTION 5: WHAT IS OUR PLAN? Drucker lists five elements of effective plans:--Abandonment--Concentration--Innovation--Risk Taking--AnalysisOn abandonment he preaches, “Ask of any program, system, or customer group, ‘If we were not committed to this today, would we go into it?’ If the answer is no, say ‘How can we get out—fast?’”If you’ve never drilled down into these five Drucker questions, this jam-packed book of wisdom is a must-buy. Practical. Timely. It’s a do-it-yourself strategic planning tool. You’ll underline insights on every page. For example:Kotler: “Nobody can guarantee your job. Only customers can guarantee your job.”Drucker: “Self-assessment is the first action requirement of leadership: the constant resharpening, constant refocusing, never being really satisfied.”Kotler (again): Marketers must understand the four customer roles often in play when a family purchases a car: initiator, influencer, decider, and buyer.Krishnamoorthy: “You are going to the hospital to prevent diseases from happening, not just to cure what you already have. Value, therefore, has to be translated from the mind-set of the product to the mind-set of the customer.”Drucker: “The question, What do customers value?—what satisfies their needs, wants, and aspirations—is so complicated that it can only be answered by customers themselves. And the first rule is that there are no irrational customers.”

The questions are so simple that many want to dismiss them. The best will dig deeper and realize the depths and wisdom that await. What is your business? What is it really? What do you customers value? Do you really know or just assume. There's gold in these pages that will benefit any leader or person who hopes to be one. The incredible thought leaders who have contributed to this latest edition confirm the importance of these questions and add helpful insight. Dig deep on this one and you will emerge richer and wiser than you can imagine. Work on these with your senior team (or hire me to facilitate) and you will spread that wisdom to others. Buy it, read it, let it sink deep into your mind and then your team. Your business will never be the same. And you'll thank me.
