The War Poems, by Siegfried Sassoon

About the Author Siegfried Sassoon was born in 1886 and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. He served in the trenches during the First World War, where he began to write the poems for which he is remembered. Despatched as 'shell-shocked' to hospital, he organised public protest against the war. His poetry initially met with little response, but his reputation grew steadily in the following decades. Apart from the War Poems of 1919, he published eight volumes of verse during his lifetime. But it is as a novelist and autobiographer that he is perhaps better known. Sassoon's semi-autobiographical trilogy, Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man (1928), Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (1930) and Sherston's Progress (1936), was outstandingly successful. He published several more volumes of autobiography, including Siegfried's Journey (1945), before his death in 1967.

Excellent resource for those of us who like to be prepared By Kitty Smith I'm just two gas masks shy of being a doomsday prepper so any book about possible stock market crashes catches my eye immediately. This is perfect for anyone who plays the stock market, as well as those who fear an economic crash is on the horizon. Well written and obviously well researched, it walks you the basics of demographics and economics in the US, explaining topics such as wages and inflation in a way that is simple to understand.I now realize the indicators of a coming crash go far beyond what a particular stock is worth. It even takes you through the relevance of homicide rates, which I never would have considered. Overall this is a very educational and eye opening guide. I believe it is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to be prepared for a potential stock market crash.

It had a good flow throughout, and it had my attention from start to finish. The words used are not too complex, which I like because there’s no need to have any prior knowledge before reading this book.I am a visual learner, so I really liked the graphs used in the book. I especially like how the graphs show the past several decades instead of just a few years as it gives more credibility to the facts. As a sidenote, when I was reading the book, I thought about how corporate America gives just a few percent raise, if anything. (But that could be an entirely new book in itself). The interest rate graph is also interesting. It helps to illustrate the best way to use savings. It’s so true when the author states the best way may to be under the mattress. I like to figure out where to put my money to maximize potential interest, and this makes me think more about my future decisions.I was really happy to see the section at the end about how to survive the crisis. There are always facts you can absorb. But if you don’t know what to do with these facts, it is all useless. I also like the section at the end with the extra articles, so you can get more information from other sources if you so choose. In conclusion, this is an excellent read and great book for everyone. I learned a lot of good information, and I know I will be changing some things in my life because of some things I read in the book. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn a little bit more about the economy, money, stocks or how to even get a little more ahead in life. A+++++++

By Rae Phillips I found this to be a very engaging and thought provoking read, we are all already aware that we are living longer and working more hours for less money, but Cheung’s analysis of social economic structure and its affect on the economy has certainly stimulated my thoughts on the coming months and what to expect.Cheung’s prediction of a tumultuous stock market crash is backed up against historical facts and figures; he raises valid points about the impending retirement of baby boom generation and the backlash of this on the economy. The book itself is well written and a comfortable read, Cheung has an excellent light-hearted flow to his writing and let’s face it economics is hardly a jovial subject, yet he manages to make his theories easy to understand. Cheung explains the reasons behind economic downturns in very simple plain English; he cites historical and social impact and discusses economic growth and decline in layman’s terms. This book is a must read for students of economics as well as those who have an interest in demographics and the stock market. As a Brit I found this a really interesting read, it was good to think about the US perspective, certainly against what we here in Britain are facing. One particular closing paragraph strikes a chord with me:“The timing is critical. In a democracy you vote for your leader. That will be your most significant act in bringing in an economic recovery”With a general election looming in Britain in the coming months Cheung’s theory could turn out to be our most prophetic warning!

Closer to the Ground: An Outdoor Family's Year on the Water, In the Woods and at the Table, by Dylan Tomine

Review . . . An eloquent chronicle of a likable family's attempt to live a more nature-centric life. . .. A refreshingly unsanctimonious take. . . . A lovely homage to the oldest seductress around: Mother Nature. The Washington PosA conservation advocate and blueberry farmer shares his love of nature with his children by teaching them to forage, fish, and find firewood. -- O Magazine“Tomine is too modest to boast, but he’s clearly an adept writer, and Closer to the Ground is as understated as its author, a quietly compelling account of four seasons of foraging just out the back door... This is some of the most evocative, mouthwatering food writing I’ve ever read... The strength of the book, of course, is that, like Tomine, it leads by example. It’s a paean to eating locally without ever being preachy.” —Outside“...Tomine expresses peace, gratitude, and satisfaction with life and Mother Nature in an homage reminiscent of Noel Perrin’s ruminations on the pleasures of the simple life... While Tomine’s memoir is decidedly food-focused (particularly food specific to the Pacific Northwest), he also shares thoughts on matters large and small, whether the many uses of plastic buckets or the trade-offs that must be made in choosing a budget-friendly sustainable lifestyle. That their lifestyle creates quality time for the family is evident from a conversation with his daughter and sweet moments in the woods with his son.”—Publishers Weekly“Tomine weaves his memoir with lyrical passages, family dialogues and accounts of gathering shellfish and chanterelles—as well as delicious descriptions of cooking them—in an engaging, slightly self- deprecating tone... Closer to the Ground inspires readers to examine their own daily lives and rediscover their surroundings.” —Shelf Awareness“Closer to the Ground is a pleasure to read, depicting as it does the days and seasons of a family intent on living joyfully, and providing at the same time a lively meditation on our relationship with nature. I found its buoyant, irrepressible, self-deprecating tone entirely winning, and was drawn in, happily, from page one.” —David Guterson, author of Snow Falling on Cedars"Closer is a good-humored guide to teaching our kids how to learn from nature as teacher and mentor... You can see in Dylan’s kids, the more time they spend foraging and fishing with their dad, just how different their relation is to the food they eat, and how they develop a confidence anyone of any age could envy." —Yvon Chouinard, founder and owner of Patagonia“Tomine finds…a way for regular people to live a little more consciously in a world that underpins the contrails and Twitter feeds of our twenty-first-century civilization. Closer to the Ground is accessible, well written, and optimistic. It is a warm reminder that even on the days when salmon are scarce, it is a kind of sustenance to be in the boat together under the sun and to feel the tension on the lines and the rhythm of shifting water in our bodies. –Orion"When Dylan Tomine was young, he and his friends would scamper throughout the neighborhood picking blackberries. 'If you pick ‘em, I’ll bake it,' his mom would tell him. It was the remembrance of his mom’s steaming, fragrant pies, fresh out of the oven that years later would, in part, make wild food gathering a way in which his family could spend time together in the outdoors. In this beautifully written and heartfelt account, Tomine describes his family’s forays into nature. They grow vegetables, fish for salmon, dig for oysters, forage for mushrooms, and hunt for deer. The book is not about survival. Tomine fully admits that they still get much more of their food from the grocery store, but, rather it’s a way to raise a family in modern times while remaining grounded with the natural environment." --National Outdoor Book Awards

I don't particularly like nature, other than the odd pretty patch of flowers. I dislike dirt to the point of being phobic. Being around too many trees at once makes me nervous. So I'm not sure what possessed me to say yes when offered the chance to review a new book called Closer to the Ground. Perhaps it was because the author and his family live in my region. Or perhaps it was just the idea of getting a glimpse into a life so different from my own. Regardless of the reason, I am SO glad I accepted the chance. Closer to the Ground is not only the best non-fiction book I've read all year, it rivals most fiction books as well. This is a gorgeous, amazing book.Where to begin on listing the reasons why I love this book. Hard to know. But here goes. First of all, this isn't some diatribe about why we should all live a life that's close to nature. The author, Dylan Tomine, doesn't judge people like me who prefer to live surrounded by concrete. He even talks about the challenges of living "green" and making it work financially (spoiler alert- even his family doesn't manage to be totally eco-friendly on a remodeling project). Instead, this book is a exploration of the joys that the author finds in his daily life out in nature- whether it's crab fishing or hunting for mushrooms with his son. It's a book about learning from the simple pleasures that his daughter takes from fishing.Woven in with the stories of clamming and fishing and mushroom hunting is a funny storyline about the battle to have enough firewood for the winter. We're moving in a few weeks from a condo to a townhouse with a woodstove, so I took notes regarding the "how to take care of your firewood" sections. There is also an ongoing story of the importance and symbolism of birds. And there are a few surprising tales about his family members and the fact that they were in internment camps during WW2.Mr. Tomine is a very, very talented writer who uses his words in a way that's more art than authorship. I felt like I was experiencing the seasons on his island right along side him (without all the nasty exposure to dirt that I generally avoid). This book made me think and it made me smile and it made me happy. I was surprised by how sad I felt when I finished the last chapter. That doesn't happen often to me when I'm reviewing books, as I'm generally just glad to have one more thing checked off my to-do list.Just buy this book. It's great. Trust me.Disclosure: I received a copy of this book to review, but was under no obligation to post a review, and especially not a positive one. Every word of opinion expressed in this review is mine and mine alone.

Closer is perfect By Gordon Urquhart A book that is perfect on so many levels -I'm a guy who has chopped 6 cords of firewood this summer- I totally related to the continuing theme of wood for the fire , and how it is a yearlong pursuit.. I'm an aspiring sportsman (don't ask me how I made fake downriggers out of clothesline, a 3 lbs dumbell and clothespins) the stories of Shrimp, Crab and Salmon made me smile. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, the descriptions of friends and family working together touched on so many good memories of my friends doing the same. As a Dad, many of the stories of doing stuff with kids and the observations of small ones, combined with male parent angle made me feel glad I wasn't the only one who has to keep reminding myself "it's about the path ".....A book like this could easily slip into a militant position manifesto - It doesn't - which makes it even more approachable and real...I appreciate the chapter about the Prius vs Montero - the though process involved - and the conclusion of the debate. Many of these chapters could easily be lifted out and placed in Savuer, Esquire, even the New Yorker.....I think this belongs on any Northwest inspired bookshelf alongside "The Curve of Time" and "Sea Pup"Next time I see a skiff on the Sound with two kids and a Dad with a special necklace, I'll make sure to smile and give a BIG wave.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful and rewarding read! By N. Ellis Perfect title for the book. Skillfully written in a way that fills one with a deeper appreciation of nature, food, family and basic values. In a leisurely way, though wonderful story telling, Dylan Tomine informs as he reveals a world filled with wonder, love and life.

Excellent Addition to the Field of Prostate Cancer By Dr. Terrence McGarty The book by Mydlo and Godec is an exceptionally good text for practicing urologists and residents to get an understanding of the current understanding of this disease, prostate cancer (PCa). PCa is a complex disorder, and is unlike many other cancers. On the one hand almost all PCas are indolent, namely the patient will most likely dies of something else, but the small percent that have an aggressive form die very rapidly. The primary tool for detection has been the PSA tests which were virulently attacked by the USPTF.It can be argued that the data they based their opinion on was flawed but we leave that for time to tell, unfortunately at the cost to the patient. The genetics of PCa is also highly complex. Unlike so many other cancers where we can identify a specific target such as BRAF in melanoma, BRACA in breast cancer and ABL fusion in CML, PCa is a mass of speculative genetic changes. Also the treatment of PCa is becoming more problematic. The options are several; surgery, radiation, implants, and even “watchful waiting” which in a sense is let hope and see what happens. The problem is that PCa metastasis is insidious and unlike breast or melanoma the path is circuitous and uncertain. This book is introduced at a time when all of these issues are facing the physician. The question is; what does the physician recommend as a course of action to a patient? All too often the patient presents with a diagnosed PCa and based upon the patient’s own investigations finds his path to a recommended therapy. Whether that is the best for this patient is usually uncertain. On p3 the authors open with a direct assessment of the USPTF, one which I would strongly recommend reading for any practitioner. It is short, well written and on point. This in a sense sets this rest of the work in clear perspective; unlike the USPTF, this is a “what is the best for the patient” work. The book is structured along standard lines. The first several chapters deal with a wide variety of current issues such as the genetics, the androgen receptor issues, and fusion. All are done at a reasonably high level for the practitioner. This is clearly not a book on the detailed genetic issues associated with PCa. Chapter 5 is an interesting chapter since it discusses the issues of Gleason 6 and is it even a cancer. This is a compelling question since as we are discovering the genetic makeup is often more telling and that may mean the genetic makeup of the most aggressive cell. Chapter 6 is another significant chapter since it deals with HGPIN. HGPIN has for a decade or more been synonymous with a progression to PCa. However that is not inevitable. The interesting cases are those where there is a HGPIN at initial biopsy and then it disappears and never returns. The question then is; how significant a prognostic issue is HGPIN?Chapter 11 discusses MRI imaging in localized PCa. MRI imaging is becoming more common and is becoming an element in integrated biopsies with real time ultrasound. This is a useful chapter for the urologist to become familiar with an imaging technique which will become a more integral part of diagnosis and prognosis. However as with all modalities it may add significantly to the costs and also may cause increased biopsy covers for what may not be significant observations.Chapter 13 is an excellent discussion on PSA screening. PSA is a useful but sometimes problematic measure. PSA increases with prostate volume and age as well as with pathological changes. Differentiating them is complex. The physician must balance reasonableness with the risk of being too insensitive to the changes. Chapter 17 discusses hereditary PCa. This is mostly a discussion of genetic inheritances that result in PCa. However we also know that there is a strong correlation between first degree relative PCa and PCa in the patient. This is correlative and not causative, whereas what in in this chapter seems to be much more causative.Chapters 26 thru 41 discuss the complexities of surgical treatment and the presentation is clear and up to date. Chapters 42 thru 48 discuss radiation therapies with equal presentation. Chapters 52 thru 57 discuss some advanced issue of PCa therapy. This includes several biologics as well as androgen therapies.Chapter 66 is an interesting chapter in that it discusses new markers for diagnosis and prognosis. On the diagnosis side there are many ways to enhance PSA and related measures including PCA3. One of the recent tests such as 4K have seemed to be of some use in assessing the chance of there being PCa prior to biopsy. Although I have had experience with this test and positively specifically it is still as I write this not FDA approved. There are also almost a dozen genetic tests used on PCa cells after biopsy to ascertain a prognosis for subsequent aggressive potential. Many of these are still being tested but generally they also provide guidance. However the conundrum is using them for prognosis when the result is poor and there is no significant treatment available.Overall this is an excellent up to date summary of PCa, its diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and the state of the science that surrounds it. It clearly meets the needs of the practitioner. Its weakness in my view, and that of one involved more deeply on the genetics side, is that it would have been helpful to have delved a bit more deeply in the genetics of PCa. Unlike many other cancers PCa is highly heterogeneous and it seems that each week one sees another several genes putatively involved. Thus one can appreciate perhaps avoiding this area since it may be out of date by publication. This is an excellent and up to date text and a worthy addition to what is currently available.

Thomson As I always find, his novels are difficult at times because of the extensive details given to thoughts, objects and ideas, but it is always worth the effort. There is much to be learned here, and much more enlightening and uplifting than the great murder mysteries I also love. There are also no "traps" here that will get me into areas I do not need to explore. Here I discover that the "least lovely" of the vicar's children has much to share that can inspire me in my walk. You don't have to be totally sold on every aspect of MacDonald's theology to be uplifted by his faith and love for our Creator.

My first George MacDonald book, I am disappointed By deborah This is the first book of George MacDonald's I have read and I was very disappointed - especially since I knew one of my favorite Christian authors, C.S. Lewis, revered his work. The title refers to the narrator, a newlywed young mother. Each chapter relates an anecdote in her life, and as the anecdotes proceed, the chapters deal more and more thoroughly with the practical application of Christian philosophy. I can't really say they deal with the application of Christianity or Christian faith - they were somehow too vague to deserve such high praise. In many ways, I thought they fell pretty short. The anecdotes seem reasonably realistic, though a little random - the arrival of her first child, a gypsy kidnaps her little sister (an adopted gypsy child), the meeting of an interesting friend, her annoying cook, her husband's irresponsible brother, reformation of a gypsy mother, her husband's illness and conversion, exposure of a dying woman's fantasy of Christ, the woman's subsequent self-knowledge, a conversation at a dinner party, etc.I kept waiting for something interesting to happen. Perhaps it's my individual taste, but to me each chapter was so... boring. In hopes the real story was just a long time in getting started, I started to flip through. Nada. It's the same to the end. You can see early on that the husband's brother is in love with the saintly friend - but even that ended boringly. The saint was FAR too saintly to say yes. With C.S. Lewis in the back of my mind, I kept waiting for adventure!!!! No adventure. My strongest criticism of this book isn't that it was boring, but that the author's faith was the kind that makes me impatient. The author found only SOME of God's commands to be worth attention. It is easy to have sympathy for this view, except when it is being offered by a book supposedly written by a great Christian writer. It would be hard to verbalize the many ways this came through. I guess the one that stood out for me the most was that the idea of going to church seemed completely unimportant, as if we need not do it so long as we read the Bible now and then and do good works. But we don't go to church to "get" something, to learn what good works we should do, or even to find out how to take care of our souls, but to worship God! Also, there were only two people in this book who truly did do good works, and neither of them were the narrator.Maybe other George MacDonald books are different, but for me this was a bad first choice. I was disappointed.

Although almost all of his books can be rather plodding at times, this one is, in my opinion, the worst. Somewhere, I can't remember now where, I read that this book was published after his death by his daughter. I have the sneaky suspicion that this book was not only published by his daughter and was about his daughter's life, but in fact might have been written by his daughter. Now that is my own personal opinion, so take it for what it is worth, not much. But I don't think the writing sounds like that of George MacDonald. His writings are those of a man who has made up his mind. There seems to be more doubt in this work, as if the writer is not quite sure of themselves. It reads like a debut and not a book written at the end of a long writing career.

Here is a magnificent collection of essays provided to us at a sublimely lost cost due to technology and will probably not be read because of all the techno-noise out there. This collection can broadly broken down into two main areas, those that are fairly topical and the reader will have to search the internet to appreciate certain references and those that are more theoretical.Somewhere between the Edwardians and the Modernists, Chesterton's style is music to the reader's ears. Clear, concise, at times humorous, and certainly opinionated this will give the reader a glimpse into the attitudes of the past and a window into the future. It is a must read for any student of modern English or modern topical mores.

Davis and Christopher J. White, provides a brief history and background on social “intrapreneurs”. Intrapreneurs are people full of initiative, courage and willing to take risks within the current system of organizations. The book provides social intrapreneurs who work within organizations tools they can use to produce innovation and create positive social changes within their organizations.According to Davis and White, every person could be an intrapreneur. Those on the front lines have the greatest capacity to initiate changes. Innovation and change are never simple things. It requires create opportunity structures, make persuasive cases, focus on social networks and have mobilizing platforms. There are four key factors to generate an innovation or a change. Internally changing may take more time and more energy to realize, but it can have a much larger impact than people usually believe. The book suggests that social intrapreneurs need to prepare to answer four questions. When will be the right time to make a change? Why do intrapreneurs need changes? Who will support changes? How to mobilize supporters? Social intrapreneurs should have appropriate answer for each question prior to changing. However, those elements stay at a fundamental level. As for professional business people, they may have a more accurate and stable conception of the construction of a social movement framework.Generally speaking, people think social responsibility should be highly valued by organizations. Organizations that give priority to their own interests are generally criticized by the public when there are conflicts between the bottom lines and vice versa. However, it is hard to make a choice between interests and responsibilities for stakeholders. Nike is one example provided by Davis and White. Nike realized that they should pay attention to corporate social responsibilities due to the consumer boycott, which occurred when consumers became aware of deplorable working conditions in its supply chain. Ford became a good model of code of ethical conduct after they experienced the scandal of Pinto. In reality, many organizations begin to regret their actions after being boycotted by society. What would intrapreneurs do if their company would not permit them to make changes? If organizations put their own interests above social responsibilities, and intrapreneurs are the beneficiaries, would the intrapreneurs be willing to make a change? These issues are real challenges during the course of changing from company inside. It should be combined with actual situations to make a decision about whether to change or not. However, Davis and White do not provide much information on solving these issues.Another drawback is that some important points mentioned in the book are just common sense. For beginners who have ideas but are not familiar with social innovations, this book is a good introductory textbook. But for experienced business people, this book is less effective. The book is useful because Davis and White use examples to support their point of view and extract the essence from a large number of cases to present to readers. We think that Davis’ and White’s intention is to lead a way for readers to analyze firms’ behaviors with actual situations and to provide a basic guideline for beginners, rather than to encourage readers to simply emulate the companies’ behaviors.

People on the front lines have the greatest capacity to initiate changes By HAORUI yu The book “Changing Your Company from the Inside Out”, by Gerald F. Davis and Christopher J. White, provides a deeper vision about company innovation. A new word “Intrapreneur” was defined in this book. Intrapreneurs are people full of courage, initiative and willing to take risks within the current system of organizations. The book mentions social intrapreneurs who work for organizations they can use to produce innovation and create positive social changes within their organizations. In order to understand how to enact social change through an organization, four questions to ask yourself are suggested by this book. When will be the right time to make a change? Why do intrapreneurs need changes? Who will support changes? How to mobilize supporters? Intrapreneurs should have appropriate answer for each question prior to changing. While, those elements stay at a fundamental level. As for professional business people, they may have a more accurate and stable conception of the construction of a social movement framework.According to Davis and White, everyone could be an intrapreneur. People on the front lines have the greatest capacity to initiate changes. Innovation is never a simple thing. It requires people to create opportunity structures, make persuasive cases, focus on social networks and have mobilizing platforms. This book puts more focus on “the right time and the right place”, which not only means the right time to start an innovation, but also means the right time for every stage of innovation. In chapter four, a new concept “Opportunity structure” is introduce by the author. This concept describes the situation in and around an organization that makes it the right time for an innovation or movement. In addition, the question “Why do social movements arise when they do?” is purposed by intrapreneur. According to research, mapping the terrain for an innovation and analyzing the timing makes an innovation more likely to be well received. These are the two procedures to help us answer and handle the four core questions questions. To get to the right place, we need the right strategy. According to the book, strategy addresses a set of essential question: “What is our core mission? What are our markets? Who are the constituencies we aim to serve? What is our industry model? How do we serve our markets? How do we measure our performance? This book uses an common case of Apple to help us understanding a company`s strategy with EDGAR, which is short of the US Securities and Exchange Commission`s Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval database. This book is really useful. First, it uses simple words to make people understand some professional words of management and easier keep in mind. Second, this book use both the old and new cases to explain the author`s opinion, which make people fell interest when they read it. Third, this book brings a deeper though to the readers. So, when readers are facing the similar situation, they will have a better choice in their mind and clear about what they will do and how to achieve their goals.

It examines the key elements and best practices from social movements and creates a step by step change management guide for corporate intrapreneurship.Davis and White do this by identifying four types of social innovations:1. Product/Service2. People3. Practices4. PublicThey then create a solid frame work to help you:1. Identify “When” to push for changing (ID’ing key events in a company’s life cycle conducive to change)2. Answer “Why” we need this change (i.e. framing the conversation)3. Identify “Who” the key stakeholders are (i.e. supporters, decision makers, roadblocks)4. Determine “How” you will mobilize support (i.e. what tools/processes will you leverage).Through practical examples of social movements and current corporate innovations/intrapreneurs, Davis and White demonstrate that you do not need to be in the C-Suite to influence others, initiate innovation, and make a difference within your company. In the end, Davis and White encourage all of us to not only become creative change agents within our companies, but to leverage that to make an impact in the broader community. Following the simple steps, recommendations, and examples from this book, almost anyone can become an intrapreneur. This book empowers you to know what you need to evaluate in order to achieve your goals and implement your corporate innovation. One of the first days of the month of October 1833, I was amusing myself on the lovely shores of the Lake of Como, in Italy, taking sketches with Wollaston's Camera Lucida, or rather I should say, attempting to take them: but with the smallest possible amount of success. For when the eye was removed from the prism—in which all looked beautiful—I found that the faithless pencil had only left traces on the paper melancholy to behold.

You correctly list our book (a hardback, priced at $150), though, oddly, you offer no discount for this title--then list both a Kindle and a paperback edition. Neither the Kindle edition nor the paperback edition is a replica of our book. They should not be listed together. Our edition of Pencil of Nature was subject to a 9-page review in the June issue of Art and Antiques, and this has provoked many people to order it, from you, on Kindle or as a paperback--and we are inundated with complaints that these formats do not give them the book they read about. I don't know why we are being subjected to complaints that are the result of Amazon's mistake, but we would be very grateful if you would correct your entry.Repeat: the Kindle edition and the paperback edition that you list immediately after your listing for our book are NOT (in either case) replicas of our book.Thank you for your help.

Pencil of Nature is a rare book by one of the inventors of the photography process - Fox Talbot. The book should have illustrations and the photographer's description of each plate. However, this version included just the descriptions, making the book only marginally useful.

"[...]he was, besides, a zealous student of alchemy and astrology, a friend of Dee, of Lilly, and of Booker. Very likely Kenelm had been entrusted to Allen's care at Oxford on the recommendation of Sandy; for Allen, one of his intimates, was a serious occultist, who, according to his servant's account, "used to meet the spirits on the stairs like swarms of bees." With these occupations Napier combined a large medical practice in the Midlands, the proceeds of which he gave to the poor, living ascetically himself. His favourite nephew, Richard Napier the younger, his pupil in all these arts and sciences, was about the same age as Kenelm, and spent his holidays at Great Lindford. The correspondence went on. Digby continued his medical observations abroad; and after his return we find him writing to Sandy, communicating "some receipts," and asking for pills[...]".

Woodley What really sets this book apart from other cookbooks and books of receipts is that it has a huge selection of brewing and wine making receipes in here with many different ways included. He also has a wonderful array of remedies if you are, for instance, suffering from scrofula or a consumption.Digby lists the names of his sources of recipes, whether it is a lady or a Duke, and often the results of using it. It is all hearsay of course, but it seems many things were curative that we might feel a little sickened by now. This is a wonderful resource, and the only modern version is on kindle. not as nice as paper, but useful if this is the only one you can get!

Sir Kenelm Digby Knight must have been the most popular sought after raconteur in the courts of 1645 .In understandable English vernacular of the time this quietly witty man details well over 250 tongue~to~tail recipes of those times. E.g. : Hart 's horn gelly, marrow spinage pasties, flomery caudle, smallage gruel, excellent black puddings, to pickle an old fat goose, white marmalate the Queen 's way, ~ etc . ~~. Plus: Ales, Ciders, over 20 recipes for meathe ( mead ), and wines , including; raspberry, strawberry, current, and Cherry wines. Also Sir Kenelm Digby Knight shows his knowledge of Ladies' waters, powders, and perfumes; Ladies soothing powders, and poultices for treating wounds.Sir Kenelm Digby Knight talks as one person to another.

"[...]anything else. It is quite possible that I am a bad economist; but it is certain that I am incorrigible. Having matured in the surroundings and under the special conditions of sea life, I have a special piety toward that form of my past; for its impressions were vivid, its appeal direct, its demands such as could be responded to with the natural elation of youth and strength equal to the call. There was nothing in them to perplex a young conscience. Having broken away from my origins under a storm of blame from every quarter which had the merest shadow of right to voice an opinion, removed by great distances from such natural affections as were still left to me, and even estranged, in a measure, from them by the totally unintelligible character of the life which had seduced me so mysteriously from my allegiance, I may safely say that through the blind force of circumstances the sea was to be all my world and the merchant service my only home for a long succession of years. No wonder, then, that in my two exclusively sea books—"The Nigger of the Narcissus," and "The Mirror of the Sea" (and in the few short sea stories like "Youth" and "Typhoon")—I have tried with an almost filial regard to render the vibration of life in the great world of waters, in the hearts of the simple men who [...]".

A Personal Record, by Joseph Conrad

It 's a philosophical book of writer's calling, his ethics and morals, and, in a final account, A Personal Record is the legacy Joseph Konrad left for us. Legacy of decency and message of how one should live.
