"As gripping as any detective fiction. Proof that one doesn't need to be fascinated with Richard III to be enthralled by the story of his body's discovery." ―Publisher's Weekly

In August 2012 a search began, and on February 4, 2013, a team from Leicester University delivered its verdict to a mesmerized press room and to the world: they had found the remains of Richard III, whose legacy was perhaps the most contested of all British monarchs. Prior to this major discovery, there had been little new information about Richard III for some time. With no new evidence to fuel it, the debate over what kind of man he might have been seemed to have stalled. Thus the story of the discovery of Richard III is a story of the value of archaeology―careful analysis of physical evidence backed up by the latest science and technology―and how it can change our understanding of history. Firsthand accounts from the team that found the king, along with photographs from the author’s own archives and an expanded epilogue incorporating new DNA evidence, augment this compelling detective story as the evidence is uncovered. 43 illustrations

Review “Highly recommended. [Mike] Pitts effectively conveys the excitement of the discovery, clearly and vividly describing the process and the personalities. Writing this book must have been the dream of a lifetime for him, and he has risen to the occasion. STARRED REVIEW” (Kirkus Reviews)“As gripping as any detective fiction. . . . Pitts’s book is proof that one doesn’t need to be fascinated with Richard III to be enthralled by the story of his body’s discovery.” (Publishers Weekly)“This remarkable cold-case-file narrative is a must for all English history buffs.” (Library Journal)“This compelling and easily accessible account of the dig for the remains of King Richard III of England will appeal to a broad cross-section of readers, including history, mystery, and archaeology buffs. Combining Richard’s history and demise, the physical excavation itself, and cutting-edge forensic science involved, the author seamlessly weaves this centuries-in-the-making tale into a dramatic thriller. Pitts is an archaeologist himself, and his passionate enthusiasm for his subject matter is contagious.” (Booklist/American Library Association)“A readable archaeological perspective on the dig that led to the sensational discovery in 2012 of the skeleton of England’s King Richard III, buried in 1485. . . . Highly recommended.” (Choice)“Pitts recounts the exhilarating dig--in which the lead archaeologist promised to eat his hat if the skeleton actually turned up.” (Scientific American)“Illuminates the tangled, bloody wars of 15th-century England and patient excavation work of 21st-century researchers....Informative.” (Christian Science Monitor)“An amazing story.” (The Dispatch)“It reads like an Indiana Jones adventure, albeit without the obligatory bad guys.” (Portland Book Review)“At its liveliest, Pitts' account reads like a police procedural, with clues, false leads, and finally a killing unraveled and a mystery triumphantly solved.... As much about the diggers as about who or what they dug up.” (The Dallas Morning News)“This fascinating and informative book of the search for and discovery of the controversial king’s remains in a parking lot incorporates English history, archaeology and forensics.” (Redlands Daily Facts)

About the Author Mike Pitts is an archaeologist and award-winning journalist. He has directed his own excavations and conducted scientific research, from Stonehenge to an Easter Island statue, and for the last ten years has edited Britain’s leading archaeological magazine, British Archaeology.

I discovered it when I got home from work on a Friday evening and I’d finished it by noon on Saturday. It’s hard to know where to start in describing what I like about it.To begin, I liked Mike Pitts idea of doing the contents as though it were a play divided into five Acts and some individual scenes plus a prologue and epilogue. The organization of the book flows naturally and is easy to follow. Another aspect of the book I especially liked is the non-biased way the views of the archeologists and the Ricardians are presented. In particular, I like the way Pitts explains the motivations of the Ricardians.Pitts provides interesting background on two key figures behind the project—Richard Buckley of University of Leicester Archaeological Services and Philippa Langley of the Richard III Society. In addition, he presents a wealth of detail about the preparations for the dig, the dig itself and the subsequent scientific studies. At the conclusion, he tackles the controversy regarding the significance of finding Richard III’s remains.I’d say the only negative comment I can make about this book is the fact all the illustrations are black and white, which is disappointing after the many color illustrations in Richard III: The King Under the Carpark.

Mumma A compelling account of an archaeological discovery that will influence all future biographies of Richard III and histories of this fascinating late medieval period. So many of the disagreements about Richard have involved his physical body and this unexpected discovery answers some of those disputes (and will undoubtedly fuel others). It's hard to imagine a more significant royal skeleton, or a more improbable set of circumstances and coincidences leading to its discovery. This story of "the king in the car park" is still in the news, with new DNA results announced just this week (12/5/2014) that suggest the king's coloring (96% chance of blue eyes / 77% of blond hair) and find marital infidelity somewhere in the royal line; so part of me wants a fuller, longer book including all these updates. However, for a book that obviously needed to be written and published quickly after the bones were first found in Leicester in 2012 and identified as Richard's in 2013, it is a very engaging and quick read and the Thames & Hudson hardcover book itself is substantial, well-illustrated, and tastefully printed in two colors.

Includes historical information on Richard and his life and death. He was not the monster Shakespeare painted him to be.
