The crucifixion of our Savior was sanctioned by a Roman deputy; and the persecuted Christians were allowed an appeal to Caesar. Soon therefore, did the religion of Jesus make its way to Rome. The power of Rome had also reached its acme; and as the spirit of Christianity was diverse from that of the world, the learning and power of the Empire soon combined against it. When their families were massacred for ivory, their calves cowered in terror. Through love and community, they overcame trauma and bloomed, surefooted and joyous. Grown into  adults, they show us that being big doesn't mean using your strength to harm others. This is a magical story of resilience, healing. and hope. These orphans  teach us how to  come back when everything you had is gone. As a psychologist, Mary Baures specializes in helping people recover from horrific loss. She is an African wildlife photographer, who adopted four traumatized baby elephants who watched their families massacred for ivory. This book explores their miraculous journey back to trust and love. She is the author of Undaunted Spirits - Portraits of Recovery from Trauma, and many other publications on healing. Dr. Baures has a private practice in Beverly, Massachusetts. She is one of the organizers of the Boston Global March for Elephants and Rhinos. She is co-producer of the documentary film, Strong at the Broken Places - Turning Trauma Into Recovery. "This wonderfully written and magnificently photographed book about orphan elephants makes us understand the powerful similarities and connections between humans and animals. When we understand this, the slaughter of elephants for ivory becomes a crime against all we aspire to be as human beings." --Margaret Lazarus, Academy Award winning filmmaker of "Defending Our Lives."

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Get ready to fall in love with baby elephants By Andrea0710 This story will first break your heart and then bless and heal it. It turns out baby elephants are loving and playful and dependent on others - just like human babies. The tragedy of how these orphaned babies lose their mothers to ivory hunters is devastating. But Mary Baures - an African wildlife photographer from America who adopted four orphaned baby elephants - makes their shocking stories ultimately about life and hope and love as they find refuge and are cared for by humans and by each other. Mary's clear writing and stunning photos are a joy, and her recommendations on "How You Can Make a Difference" are inspiring.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. For the Love of Wildlife - Life Without Fear By Robertalove Mary Baures takes you as close as you can get to the hearts and souls of elephants, rhinos and lions... but more than that, Mary opens your eyes through her astonishing photography so you feel like you are behind her camera and inside her mind. As you read 'Love Heals Baby Elephants', you will gain a better understanding of the imminent danger of extinction for many of our noble animals that simply ask for the freedom to live their lives without fear. The theme of the power of love weaves it's way through Mary's words and photography. 'Love Heals Baby Elephants' will inspire you to be kinder and I highly recommend that you read Mary's authentic stories that will break your heart and lift your spirits at the same time. Mary Baures gives you the inside story why love really does heal baby elephants and why it's so important for our planet and humanity.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tragic, hopeful, and inspiring. By Rampant Bibliophile What a moving and emotional piece. It is hard to imagine that anyone could read even a single chapter of this book and not be overwhelmed with compassion for the elephant orphans being raised by the Sheldrick Foundation. There are a million stories to be found about elephants' impressive memories and intelligence. Almost like humans! But no, not "almost like humans". To claim that would be to assign to elephants a capacity for heartlessness and cruelty which they do not possess. This is a book about children who watched their parents murdered in the most horrifying ways and instead of living with hate in their hearts for the creatures who committed the murder, the children came to love them as family. It is a fascinating and humbling glimpse into the power of love. It is a rousing battle cry against the atrocities of ivory poaching. It is a stirring plea for compassion. In all honesty, while I have always loved animals, I would not consider myself a conservationist or any kind of activist. I read this book because I am familiar with the author, who is also an extremely talented painter and photographer. I was overwhelmed by this book. I finished it in a single sitting. The next week, I had signed onto the Sheldrick Wildlife Foundation website to pick a little elephant to "adopt". I eventually settled on Mbegu, a little female whose story is featured in this book.I highly recommend this book to all. I cannot say that you will exactly enjoy it. It is a documentation of tragedy. But it is also a beacon of hope for humanity, elephants, and our planet. I also implore everyone to PLEASE, STOP BUYING, SELLING, OR CELEBRATING IVORY PRODUCTS. Whether the ivory is old or new, it still represents the death of a majestic creature and, very likely, the death of its children as well.

"[...] "Still may Time hold some golden space Where I'll unpack that scented store Of song and flower and sky and face, And count, and touch, and turn them o'er, Musing upon them." He cannot forego his sensations, that "box of compacted sweets". He even forefeels a ghostly landscape where two shall go wandering through the night, "alone". So the faith that broke its chrysalis in the first disillusionment of boyhood, in "Second Best", beautiful with the burden of Greek lyricism, ends triumphant with the spirit still unsubdued. — "Proud, then, clear-eyed and laughing, go to greet Death as a friend." So go, "with unreluctant tread". But in the disillusionment of beauty and of love there is an older tone. With what bitter savor, with what grossness of diction, caught from the Elizabethan and satirical elements in his culture, he spends anger in words! He reacts, he rebels, he storms. A dozen poems hardly exhaust his gall. It[...]".

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Poet, Terrible Formatting By dpm I love Rupert Brooke's work, and I was excited to see a "professionally designed" edition available for the Kindle, but to call this professionally designed is an affront to professionals, and design. Some poems ("The Great Lover", among others) have lost all their line breaks; others have weird indentation problems. The headings are reproduced in the same font as the poems themselves.Disastrously, in a collection of poems, the table of contents isn't even linked; it's just a long, plain-text list.None of these problems are present in even the Gutenberg edition of this same collection, and since that can be sent to one's Kindle for free I see no reason to make the same mistake I did. Find a better collection.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Rupert Brooke's collected poems--great collection! By N. Moore I was delighted when I discovered a complete collection of Rupert Brooke poetry. I fell in love with this poet as a teenager, and I still marvel at the beauty of the passages.

By Ian Rowlands The kindle format removes the physical pleasure of handling a book in which poetry has been well presented, but the cost trade off probabaly makes it worthwhile. I confess I didn't know much about Rubert Brooke beyond the War Poems and Grantchester ... so this was an eye-opener. I'm not really sure what the "unexpurgated" tag is all about. This collection will be one I return to, time and again.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Once again Ballantyne doesn't disappoint! By Amy L Kimball I have always loved Ballantyne's books and this although not "The Coral Island" is no exception. His books are full of excitement, adventure, and great stories. But most important is their message of the gospel. This book shows how God truly works in mysterious ways to transform lives and complete his will.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. adventures in the Pacific By othoniaboys Stevenson's beloved "Ballantyne the brave" was a popular writer of adventure stories for boys in the Victorian era. This is about mutiny and piracy in the Pacific. The style is simple and direct, almost naive. The plot hops about from place to place and year to year (three years are skipped in one sentence). Those readers who are atheists or politically correct need not apply, for they will be offended! The "savages" speak in an Uncle Remus dialect apparently intended to be funny. This could never be published today as a new book, nor made into a movie in its original form.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Some will love him and some will hate him By Hanna I like R.M Ballantyne. Not all his books are well written. One gets the impression that some of his stories were written hurriedly and not polished off enough. He writes from an unashamedly Christian world view, but he does even more than that, he weaves the Christian message into his books - which I think was unusual even for his time period. For that reason some will love him and some will hate him.

"[...] Robert Louis Stevenson[1] was born at Edinburgh on the 13 November 1850. His father, Thomas, and his grandfather, Robert, were both distinguished light-house engineers; and the maternal grandfather, Balfour, was a Professor of Moral Philosophy, who lived to be ninety years old. There was, therefore, a combination of Lux et Veritas in the blood of young Louis Stevenson, which in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde took the form of a luminous portrayal of a great moral idea. In the language of Pope, Stevenson's life was a long disease. Even as a child, his weak lungs caused great anxiety to all the family except himself; but although Death loves a shining mark, it took over forty years of continuous practice for the grim archer to send the black arrow home. The trade in live and dead animals and animal parts is a significant aspect of the global economy, but economic considerations are inevitably at odds with optimal animal welfare. Providing a snapshot of the current situation, this book discusses the background to modern international trade, welfare, and the environmental, economic and cultural issues. Covering farm, zoo and sport animals as well as the pet industry, the author draws together the competing interests and issues involved. Critically examining the overall ethics of the current situation and future of animal trade, Phillips considers it within the context of food security, climate change, cultural sensitivities and consumer opinion.

The author provides a summary of the pros and cons of each site without going into too much detail. For that you should explore the sites yourself on the Internet before joining any of them. In addition, the author summarizes a few of the web hosting sites photographers could use to create their own sites to sell photos. I have sometime toyed with the idea of being a photographer. This book gave me some wonderful ideas!I have sometimes wondered how I could make extra money from something I do for free anyway. This book again has great content on the subject.I loved the tips and tricks that wealthy photographers use. Also, the part about how to pick a specialist niche seems very well layed out. Also, the 2 key factors part was tremendous. This is a book I will likely re-read a second time as there is so much content here!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great and useful tips! By Alicia P. Having a new DSLR camera, I thought; why not make some money out of it? This way, I will be able to practice my photography skills as well as earn money on the side. This book came in handy in achieving that goal. This book shared 10 very useful ways on how one can make money out of selling photos online. This is a short but worthwhile read.

Superstition Unveiled, by Charles Southwell

About the Author Born in London, England. Southwell became an atheist as a teenager after reading Sermons by the Calvinist Timothy Dwight. After serving in the British Foreign Legion in Spain during the Carlist War, Southwell became a popular and prolific free thought scholar and lecturer in London. He founded a radical bookstore in London, and helped found the atheist magazine Oracle of Reason, which often published fiercely anti-Christian material. Southwell boldly asserted in 1842 that “The world could not have been designed by one being, infinitely wise, infinitely good, and infinitely powerful.” The magazine, which was the first atheist periodical in England, was considered so blasphemous that Southwell was arrested in 1841 and imprisoned for a year. Southwell lived in New Zealand from 1856 until his death in 1860, where he was influential to the freethought movement there and is considered to be New Zealand’s first freethinker. The New Zealand Association of Rationalists and Humanists named their Charles Southwell Award after him. Southwell authored the books An Apology for Atheism (1846), Superstition Unveiled (1854), and The Confessions of a Freethinker, and founded the newspapers The Investigator, The Lancashire Beacon and The Auckland Examiner.

Mr. Devereux Bayne's experiences By Richard Chappell This wonderful story was published in 6 editions of the Saturday Evening Post beginning Jan.12, 1918 as a serial novel. The tale is about a 30-year-old man, Devereux Bayne, who is staying at a hotel in New York City. He will be leaving for Bordeaux the next morning. He plans on helping France in their war with the Germans prior to WWI by driving an ambulance. Mr. Bayne quickly gets caught up in some mysterious circumstances with a burglar, a beautiful young lady, smuggled papers in code and a menacing stranger.I love the line in the book when Mr. Bayne sees the beautiful young lady, Esme Falconer, for the first time. He thinks to himself, "Well, all clouds have silver linings; some have golden ones with rainbow edges.""The Firefly of France" reminds me of John Buchan's "The 39 Steps". Both protagonists are pulled into events innocently, but manage to triumph against the odds. Ms. Angellotti certainly manages to tell a fantastic story.posted by Poore Richard's wyfe

On Track tells the story of John Blay’s long-distance search for the Bundian Way, an important Aboriginal pathway between Mt Kosciuszko and Twofold Bay near Eden on the New South Wales far south coast. The 360-kilometre route traverses some of the nation’s most remarkable landscapes, from the highest place on the continent to the ocean. This epic bushwalking story uncovers the history, country and rediscovery of this significant track. Now heritage-listed, and thanks to the work of Blay and local Indigenous communities, the Bundian Way is set to be one of the great Australian walks.

Weissel I very poetic approach to the rediscovery of an ancient Aboriginal travel route between the Mt Kosciuszko high country and the coast at Eden. Blay, an experienced bushwalker, is your guide to the Bundian Way. Through his perambulations, he uncovers evidence from artifacts which define the route. Over the past 230 years, activities such and land clearing for sheep and cattle grazing and the timber industry, have heavily overprinted the landscape making such evidence obscure. He ruminates on the role played by aboriginals in showing early white settlers and surveyors the route between the mountains and the sea. As a scientist, I pondered the question of why the Aboriginals chose the Bundian Way as the "best" way for them to travel between the coast and the high mountains. The Bundian way crosses some difficult terrain which I thought should be avoided by parties traveling on foot. In all, an intriguing if not totally convincing thesis on a key point of Aboriginal heritage in southeast Australia.

"[...] In the last two years, largely as the result of the untiring efforts of Bishop Rowe on behalf of the natives, two modern, well-equipped hospitals have been built, with money that he and his clergy have gathered, on the Yukon River, one at Fort Yukon and one at Tanana; and these are the only places of any kind, on nearly a thousand miles of the river, where sick or injured Indians may be received and cared for. Amongst men of thought and feeling there is noticeable revulsion from the supercilious attitude that used not to be uncommon toward the little peoples of the world. It begins to be recognised that it is quite possible that even the smallest of the little peoples may have some contribution to make to the welfare and progress of the[...]".

And it is about Alaska, a subject that gets my attention. The book was written by a minister who traveled to various missions in the early 1900's. The suspense of his journeys and how they managed the dogs through the snow and ice kept my attention. I also liked his description of Mt. McKinley and other scenery as he traveled across the rivers and terrain. Another interesting and historical book.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. One of my most enjoyable reads ever By D. D. LeDu First, I must admit my bias, based on personal experience. I have traveled by snowshoe, crossed the Sierras in the winter, camped in the snow, gold mined in Northern California, and worked outside in Montana in 20 to 40 below weather. As a result, this book resonates with me, and the grit shown by Alaskan "mushers" astounds me.The author was a cleric (although this is not a religious book by any means) who covered his "parish" in the winter by dogsled. The actual travels are interesting, but they are a thread upon which the author strings nuggets about early 20th Century life in remote areas of Alaska. He tells of the care, feeding and selection of sled dogs, of course. But he also tells how miners thawed the soil to a depth at which they wished to secure gold, and how they froze tunnels through the water to mine the ocean floor. He tells of interesting personalities, the types of people who flocked to Alaska, the characteristics of the natives, the quality of Alaskan potatoes, the types of snow and ice conditions, and a thousand other interesting details.By the time you are finished, you will know what temperatures are best for winter travel, the difficulties of sharing the wilderness trails with horses, all about illicit liquor traders, the curse of cotton clothing, how to stick rabbit fur on your nose to prevent frostbite to your probiscus, and a lot more than you ever considered about early Alaskan life.I can't imagine anyone who would not enjoy this book. But if you are an outdoorsman (or woman!) or just like true adventure stories, this is likely to be one of your favorites as well.

Mine is a first edition printing of the book, and it holding it in my hand often gives me a chill as I read Stuck's accounts of his winter travels by dogsled. Being a fan of the Alaskan literary genre, I hold this book in high esteem; in its own right, as illustrative and authoratative in its telling as John McPhee's Coming into the Country would be over 60 years later.Find it and read it!

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. this book may be a good starting point By dhamma learner For someone with very little investment experience, this book may be a good starting point. The book does nothing more and nothing less than offering the audience a quick and dirty synopsis of finance and investment theories and concepts. It appears to me that this book is more of a marketing tool that the author hands out to the attendees at his "Investment seminar" than a real investment reference.Save your money and buy old investment book published by the CFA Institute or old graduate level finance college textbooks covering Finance and Investment. You may have to spend more time to grasp the concepts but you are better off that way.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic Investing Framework! By Stig Brodersen In the most powerful section of his book, Lukas starts by presenting his method “MECOM.” If you are new to investing, I would read the book just for that section alone! What it does is guide you through the confusing world of investing. This is a checklist and a framework of just 5 factors you should analyze when digging into picking stocks:1. Moat. Does your company have a sustainable competitive advantage that can ensure profitability in the long run?2. Earnings. Don’t just look at the bottom line of the income statement. Lukas teaches you how to find the real earnings of a company that you can base your valuation on.3. Catalyst. The book neatly categorizes catalysts that can increase the stock price of your picks dramatically. As time is of the essence in all investing, the timing of these catalysts is very important.4. Obligations (debt). Don’t miss out on reading the balance sheet. Having too much debt makes things go faster, but if you don’t have any brakes on your car you are headed for trouble.5. Management. Basically, these people are acting on behalf of you – but you are the boss. Lukas takes you through the difficult task of determining the quality of management.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good Start - And Looking Forward To More! By Alex Morris From what I can tell this is Lukas' first book - and I'm hoping he will be back with more in the years ahead!I've read dozens of books on value investing, which naturally leads to some overlap when the topic in its entirety (margin of safety, moats, etc) is addressed in a few hundred pages. Lukas does a good job of being unique in his approach: he takes readers from the ground floor, discussing his interesting personal background and growth as an investor, all the way to real life examples of how he approaches equity valuation. He shows exactly how he values a business; even better, Lukas uses present day examples that we're all familiar with, which keeps things interesting. The combination makes for a book that keeps your attention. As I told Lukas when I finished reading "Value Investing: A Value Investor's Journey Through The Unknown...", I wish I stumbled across a book like this when I first started investing! I'm hoping this book continues to evolve over time in new versions as Lukas continues to grow as an investor.

The story features a rag-tag crew of earthmen lead by a commander named Frank, who set off to invade an alien empire in order to steal their gold. The invaders wear armor and fight with swords, making "Despoilers" play like "Flash Gordon" or similar pulp fiction. Saying much more about the plot, however, would be imprudent, as "Despoilers" relies on a clever twist, which is fairly easy to guess but still pretty enjoyable. This quick read was worth a look and has made me want to check out some of Garrett's other works.

A "science fiction" classic By Raczek's Roughnecks Read enough commentary by and about the "Golden Age" science fiction authors, you will gather the sense that while most of them were grateful to Campbell, and some of them liked him, all of them had serious reservations about his personality. Why? This novella will explain a lot of it. Garrett is a good writer, with a clear voice and a deep background. And, in his "Lord Darcy" stories, a basic feeling of responsibility and obligation to the reader. But Campbell convinced Garrett to write this story. I don't want to spoil the story for the new reader, but there is an element here of deception, of violation of the willing suspension of disbelief, that is uncomfortable. Particularly for those who live in the Americas, this is a "MUST READ".

Drs. Pelton and Singh warn of the increasing risks of cybercrime and lay out a series of commonsense precautions to guard against individual security breaches. This guide clearly explains the technology at issue, the points of weakness and the best ways to proactively monitor and maintain the integrity of individual networks. Covering both the most common personal attacks of identity fraud, phishing, malware and breach of access as well as the larger threats against companies and governmental systems, the authors explain the vulnerabilities of the internet age. As more and more of life's transactions take place online, the average computer user and society at large have a lot to lose. All users can take steps to secure their information. Cybercrime is so subtle and hidden, people can ignore the threat until it is too late. Yet today about every three seconds a person is hit by some form of cyber attack out of the blue. Locking the “cyber-barn door” after a hacker has struck is way too late. Cyber security, cyber crime and cyber terrorism may seem to be intellectual crimes that don't really touch the average person, but the threat is real. Demystifying them is the most important step and this accessible explanation covers all the bases.

Timely Primer for the era of digital transformation By Milano_ice This book is very timely, as we enter the third era of digital transformation where our daily life experience of products, services and brand are starting to be delivered via “living and always-on” fueled by sensors, cloud computing, smart devices, the Internet of Things, real time data analytics, and real-time, contextual engagement. However, this new era of digital transformation comes with its related and ever increasing risk of cyber crime. The best digital defense is a good offense and this book proactively provides the ‘best practice’ to guard against the ever increasing risk of cyber crime.

"Dracula's Guest" follows an Englishman on a visit to Munich before leaving for Transylvania. It is Walpurgis Night, and in spite of the hotelier's warning to not be late back, the young man later leaves his carriage and wanders toward the direction of an abandoned "unholy" village. As the carriage departs with the frightened and superstitious driver, a tall and thin stranger scares the horses at the crest of a hill. As a dark storm gathers intensity, the Englishman takes shelter in what turns out to be a graveyard. Disturbed at being in such a place he is forced by hail to shelter in the doorway of the tomb. As the Englishman avoids the pelting hail, the bronze door of the tomb opens under his weight and a flash of forked lightning shows the interior - and a "beautiful woman with rounded cheeks and red lips.

Dracula's Guest, by Bram Stoker

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Klinger brings the same impressive breadth of knowledge that distinguished The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes to this definitive examination of one of the classic horror novels of all time. Adopting the conceit that Stoker's narrative is based on fact, Klinger elucidates the plot and historical context for both Stoker devotees and those more familiar with Count Dracula from countless popular culture versions. Because he had privileged access to the typescript Stoker delivered to his publisher, Klinger is able to note changes between it and the first edition and comment on the reasons for them. Through close reading, Klinger raises questions about such matters as the role of lead vampire-hunter Van Helsing and whether the villainous count is actually dispatched at book's end. An introduction by Neil Gaiman, numerous illustrations, essays on topics ranging from Dracula in the movies to the academic response, and much more enhance the package. 8-city author tour. (Oct.) Review “Leslie S. Klinger’s great virtue as an editor is his sublimely willful and scrupulous disregard for the boundary between historical fact and literary falsehood. In The New Annotated Dracula, he reprises the same earlier annotated Sherlock Holmes, treating Stoker’s novel as nonfiction: real events happening to real persons. After a brief preface in which he explains his trick, Klinger’s edition becomes a surreal treat, book’s succession of journal entries and letters.” (BookPage)“This is a book every serious reader of the horror genre should have on his or her shelf. You will read Dracula with new eyes. Fascinating!” (Stephen King)

From the Publisher One of the most popular stories ever told, Dracula (1897) has been re-created for the stage and screen hundreds of times in the last century. Yet it is essentially a Victorian saga, an awesome tale of thrillingly bloodthirsty vampire whose nocturnal atrocities reflect the dark underside of a supremely moralistic age. Above all, Dracula is a quintessential story of suspense and horror, boasting one of the most terrifying characters in literature: centuries-old Count Dracula, whose diabolical passions prey upon the innocent, the helpless, the beautiful. Bram Stoker, who was also the manager of the famous actor Sir Henry Irving, wrote seventeen novels. Dracula remains his most celebrated and enduring work -- even today this Gothic masterpiece has lost none of the spine-tingling impact that makes it a classic of the genre.

By mirasreviews "The New Annotated Dracula" offers annotations and supplementary material by Leslie S. Klinger, who annotated the 3-volume "The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes" for Norton. This is a handsome, cumbersome volume, 8 ¾"w x 10 ¼"h x 1 ¾"d, weighing a hefty 3 pounds. There are color and black-and-white illustrations scattered throughout: photos of people, movies, stage productions, posters, and Dracula paraphernalia. Annotations run in a column beside the text, in slightly smaller font, and some pages fill up with nothing but annotations. This format makes the annotations easier to read than nanofont at the bottom of the page, but it makes the text of the novel more difficult to read. There is an introduction by Neil Gaiman, followed by a 32-page essay by Klinger on "The Context of Dracula". Here he provides some basic information about Victorian England, "Dracula"'s reception in 1897, a brief history of vampire literature, and some biographical information on Bram Stoker. And Klinger introduces his gimmick: For the sake of his essays and annotations, Klinger assumes that "Dracula" is a historical document written by Bram Stoker to get the word out about Dracula -or perhaps to make people believe the vampire dead- based on the accounts of his acquaintances, who are the characters in the narrative. Stoker is supposed to have gotten his information from the (fictional) "Harker Papers", in which Jonathan Harker described the events of the novel. This silly fiction of Klinger's turns out to be annoying and confusing. There are over 1500 annotations, and, to put it bluntly, most of them are taken from Clive Leatherdale's annotated "Dracula Unearthed" (1998), which is the most extensively annotated edition ever produced. Some are taken from Leonard Wolf's groundbreaking "The Essential Dracula" (published as "The Annotated Dracula" in 1975), which was the first annotated edition of "Dracula". I compared a few chapters note-for-note with "Dracula Unearthed". Most of the annotations came from Leatherdale, to the extent that his name should be on the cover. Klinger has re-worded them and, in cases where Leatherdale referred to source material, he has quoted from the source where Leatherdale only indicated page numbers. The annotations that originate with Klinger -and they are the minority- fall into a few categories: comparisons between the published text of "Dracula" and a manuscript currently held by Paul Allen, comparisons with a 1901 abridged edition of the book, comparison to films, the occasional piece of Victorian trivia, and speculation on the text per Klinger's "gentle fiction" of it being based on the "Harker Papers". Annotations in the latter category are confusing, as the reader must stop and think about whether he is reading information or a further fiction. Comparisons to the manuscript are a curiosity, but we don't know what stage of the novel's development it represents. Klinger doesn't explain that the 1901 abridgement was aimed at a more popular audience and eliminated 15% of the text. The deletions remove some of the novel's subtext, making it more fluid but less interesting and perhaps less controversial. Klinger annotates only some of the deletions, however, not all of them.Supplementary material follows the novel: "Dracula's Guest", which was a false start to the novel, later published as a short story. "The Dating of Dracula", which spins a fiction about the dates the events of the novel took place. "The Chronology of Dracula" charts the novel's major events. "Fictional Accounts of the Count" talks about book's that have taken up Stoker's Dracula character. "Sex, Lies, and Blood: Dracula in Academia" is a cursory presentation of the fashions of academic interpretations of the novel. "The Public Life of Dracula" lists stage and film productions of "Dracula". "Dracula's Family Tree" is a light treatment of vampire folklore in Eastern Europe and a look at modern-day fictional representations (speaking, of course, as if they are real). It's difficult to say what audience "The New Annotated Dracula" is suited to. If you are looking for a scholarly annotated edition that offers more than the Norton Critical Edition, get Leatherdale's "Dracula Unearthed" (it is available in the UK). If you want something packed with interesting tidbits but a little lighter, try Leonard Wolf's "The Essential Dracula". The drawback is that it was written before the discovery of Bram Stoker's working notes, so some of the information is outdated. If you just want to read the novel, I recommend the Norton Critical Edition. This "New Annotated Dracula" is too big and heavy for that. "Dracula" aficionados are going to balk at "The New Annotated Dracula". I think it's intended for people with a casual interest in the novel who don't mind the bulk or the nonsense, but this edition contributes nothing to "Dracula" scholarship.

Terrific stories from a true master of horror By Daniel Jolley Even had Bram Stoker not penned the fabulously successful Dracula, efforts such as the stories in this book would more than qualify him as a gifted, masterful writer, with a special penchant for writing horror. The most prominent story in these pages is of course "Dracula's Guest," a story excised from the final manuscript of Dracula. This is an interesting, well-told tale, but its exclusion from the aforementioned novel seems to me to be rather inconsequential. The real jewel of this collection is "The Judge's House." I have read this story several times over the last decade or so, and I must say that this is my favorite horror story of all time. It somewhat chagrins me to make such a pronouncement, thinking of the masterful tales of Lovecraft, Poe, and King, yet I am compelled to make it. The ending may be somewhat cliched , but the dark, brooding, smothering atmosphere Stoker creates in this house is powerful and brilliant. The Judge's House may well be the most haunted house in literature. The other seven stories are less noteworthy but eminently readable. Again, there are some cliches to be found among them, but they all "work." "The Squaw" is my least favorite--it is, to some degree, silly n terms of its characters and ending. I should also add that animal lovers such as myself may well be somewhat traumatized by one incident in the story--I certainly was. "The Secret of the Growing Gold," "The Gypsy Prophecy" and "The Coming of Abel Behenna" are pretty standard fare. "The Burial of the Rats" presents a thrilling, well-thought-out story of danger and escape (as well as a grim portrait of some of society's underbelly). "A Dream of Red Hands" is a sort of moralistic story that puts me in mind of some of Hawthorne's work. Finally, "Crooken Sands" is a good doppelganger tale whose presentation and overall air seem different, if not unique, from the other tales in this book. If you love old Scottish dialogue, you will reap some benefits from this story--for the rest of us, though, it makes for some slightly harder reading (but I think the story would be much less effective without it).All in all, Stoker was a more than capable short story writer, even though he did sometimes stick too closely to the classic form; cliches and predictable plot points do diminish the quality of a few stories but by no means do they seriously hamper the effectiveness of them. It is unfortunate that many people think Stoker wrote Dracula and nothing else. The selections in this book are classic horror stories that only help to grant legitimacy to the genre.

Bean I've always wanted to read Dracula, and I've thoroughly enjoyed the other annotated versions in this series. I've also been eyeing editor Leslie Klinger's three-volume annotated Sherlock Holmes for a while. Upon seeing this edition in a book store, I thought that a little hand-holding and behind-the-scenes insight would make this a fun read. While this book is both gorgeous and thorough, and I applaud Klinger's exhaustive efforts, I was surprised and disappointed upon discovering that in both this edition and the Sherlock Holmes series, he employs the 'gentle fiction' that the stories are based on actual fact while preparing his annotations. For me, being a casual but curious reader, an annotated edition should be a one-stop-shop to discover the facts behind the tales, without the reader having to do research. Instead I found that these two series superimpose the idea that they are based on true events. At first I thought I could just ignore the superfluous annotations (which would have trimmed or altered them by a full quarter.) But as I got further into it, they are not so easily ignored. There came a grey area where I began to wonder if what I was distilling from the fictionalized annotation was even close to the facts. For example, at one point early on it is insinuated that the story didn't actually happen in Transylvania, and that this was simply a cover up contrived by Stoker. I would instead have been more interested to know if Stoker had considered other locales and what course he took to finally choose Transylvania. Unfortunately, I may never know without reading a future annotated edition which dispenses with the 'true story' fiction, or without reading the other books mentioned and used by Klinger. Being a casual reader of Dracula I have no interest in delving into these other works and had instead hoped to discover more from this edition.Another reviewer has stated that Klinger must not like the novel Dracula, and I have to disagree. Klinger clearly loves this book with all the efforts he put into his edition. However, the annotations do come across a bit on the terse side, even chastising Stoker at times, certainly when taking the fictional stance that Stoker altered the original words of the players. I can imagine that to sustain this fiction that the story actually happened must have been a monumental task for Klinger, but these accomplishments are lost on this reader. On a lesser note, it was a little distracting that Sherlock Holmes seemed to be mentioned so often in the annotations. I'd also like to note that the publishers did a disservice in their reproduction of Klinger's once-beautiful photographs. They are often dark, lacking contrast and detail.Dracula was an enjoyable book, and Klinger's insight was thorough. Unfortunately, while this edition could have been the de facto annotated edition of Dracula, by taking the position that this is a true story, the editor has ensured that the book will sit merely as a curiosity until such time that his annotations can be re-edited to remove the 'gentle fiction.'
