By Rebecca Henderson I would probably be in a much different place than I am now had I had the wisdom of Bonnie Marcus’ “The Politics of Promotion” at my disposal when I was a young woman starting a career in business. However, that’s not to say that those of us with years of experience can’t currently benefit from Marcus’ book, because we can.The initial draw of “The Politics of Promotion” is the cover. Simple, but elegant, the graphics imply direction, which is what the author has given to the reader. “How High-Achieving Women Get Ahead and Stay Ahead” is the subtitle, which is a summary of the book.Marcus has filled her book with case studies and examples; I found them to really drive key points home. Her advice is spot-on. A great piece of simple advice is that of journaling; Marcus advises the reader to journal daily accomplishments. My favorite piece of advice that Marcus offers is geared toward networking. She advises the reader to find seats on nonprofit boards of directors, because doing so can demonstrate leadership skills and help in meeting influential people. Indeed, she is so right with both of those observations. As a community volunteer who has sat on more than two dozen nonprofit boards, I wish more women would heed that advice! Thank you, Bonnie Marcus, for encouraging volunteering!

Smith This book is a primer for women (and men) about how to navigate the modern workplace politics that no amount of education or training can prepare you to deal with. I wish two things: 1) I had read this book when I was a whippersnapper, and 2) I hope that men will read this book, even though it is primarly aimed at women, because the learning is applicable to either.One strong point: Marcus clearly delineates the issue with strong women's words and behavior in the workplace being perceived by others differently than strong men's words and behavior. This is a perception problem that belongs not to the actor, but to the perceiver.One minor quibble: sometimes it seemed that men were being portrayed as either on the inside keeping others out or rather clueless. Such a clear distinction between the genders with regard to behavior does not exist in my experience. I think most of us are just trying to get along and our behavior usually reflects what we have been exposed to on the journey ... until we learn a more effective way. Bonnie's book does this in fine fashion, with easy to read and short sections, woven into a strong roadway for the workplace.All in all, a fine addition to the growing library of books which speak to one of the most underused assets in the corporate world - women leaders

What High Achieving Women and Thought Leaders Know About Promotion By Barbara Rubel In The Politics of Promotion, Bonnie Marcus presents a detailed look at what it means to be a high-achieving woman that can get ahead and stay ahead. In her opening statement, Marcus says, “You work really hard.” And then focuses on what that means in relation to office politics. The Politics of Promotion is a thought-provoking compilation of personal stories and scenarios that outline the journey of professional women in today’s business world. This book tackles a subject that will resonate in women at the top and those who are on their way up. The purpose of the book is to provide insight by looking at ways to self-promote and get ahead. The book is divided into eight chapters.Chapter one, Politics in the Workplace: How it works and how women fit into it, begins with understanding one’s organizational politics and the need to reframe negative views of politics in general. I love the positivity approach. The author explores the four stages of political seasoning. This chapter also provides the underpinnings for all that follow as it looks at an assessment of current political skills, self-promotion, strategic networking, and political savvy.Chapter 2, Your Tool for Savvy Self-Promotion, is particularly valuable for those who want to look at ways their own upbringing has sabotaged their self-promotion efforts. The author does an excellent job of explaining the importance of self-promotion as both a leadership and political tool. Marcus explains the concept of using the mirror to reflect and connect with your value proposition. The chapter ends with a nice review of using your value proposition to build influence.In Chapter 3, The Magnifying Glass: Observing Workplace Dynamics, the author pays special attention to the significance of observing workplace dynamics. In this chapter she focuses on how to use the magnifying glass to discover who has the power and influence in the organization. Personally, as a specialist in loss, change and transition, I notice that clients often use metaphors to describe their professional dilemmas. Therefore, I particularly like this chapter and the metaphor of the magnifying glass. Marcus explores how to use the magnifying glass and explains how using observation skills will help you to better understand the organization’s culture. What is most important is that she clarifies how that culture impacts your potential. This chapter will resonate in readers that recognize that their company has hidden rules.Chapter 4, The Pass Go and Collect $200 Card: Strategic networking delves into ways to identify and map your power network. From the importance of a strategic network for career advancement to how to make connections and build relationships of trust, Bonnie Marcus helps the reader to avoid political land mines. Women Professionals will find Chapter 4 a must read as they learn about the significance of building relationships across cultures. I have seen this first hand in my keynotes and trainings on building professional resilience in organization across the United States.The two chapters that follow, Chapter 5, The Get Out of Jail Free Card: Sponsorship and Chapter 6, The GPS: Executive Coaching, both reflect the author's belief that there are ways to achieve a fast track to the top. Marcus points out that women must promote their accomplishments and potential and build their visibility and credibility. Clearly, sponsorship will benefit your career along with hiring an executive coach. She points out the significance of coaching for high-achieving women and what to look for when hiring one. As a high-achieving woman, myself, I felt like she was speaking directly to me.Chapter 7, Staying Ahead is one of my favorites. Bonnie focuses on getting promoted to senior positions and how to deal with the competition and scrutiny. The feature that sets this chapter apart is its stimulating presentation of how to use the political toolkit to stay ahead. From the mirror, magnifying glass, the pass go and collect $200 card, the get out of jail free card, to the GPS exercises throughout the chapter, she had me hooked! The author offers concrete examples where the reader can grasp fully what she needs to understand in relation to the politics of promotion.Of particular interest to me was Chapter 8, Moving Forward: Are you ready? which stimulates thought by asking questions. The author explores, “Where do you go from here?” and “Where do you feel the most resistance?” Bonnie Marcus offers a blueprint for success. The author suggests ways to deal with frustrations and anger and moves those feelings to empowerment. Questions are important for growth and for resilience, two topics close to my heart, and clearly that of the author.In this reviewer’s opinion, The Politics of Promotion contains strategic material that is well documented and easy to grasp. I would recommend Bonnie Marcus’s new book to high-achieving women as well as men who work with them. Although this book speaks to women, I think men can benefit from getting into the heart and mind of this award-winning entrepreneur.As a professional speaker and author on issues related to self-leadership, I personally loved how the author interconnects real-life stories throughout the book. Through every chapter, stories teach the reader how to continually move ahead in the business world. Readers will see their own stories woven through the narratives in this book. Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the read.
