Then another idea came. One of the letters, of course! The owner of the diamond had sent it this way, perhaps to be set, and had sent instructions under another cover. An absurd, even a reckless thing to do, but ——! And Mr. Latham attacked the heap of letters neatly stacked up in front of him. There were thirty-six of them, but not one even remotely hinted at diamonds. In order to be perfectly sure, Mr. Latham went through his mail a [...]".

I had read the short story "Problem of Cell 13" right before this one and was interested in reading more Thinking Machine mysteries. As it turns out, this is not about the Thinking Machine, though it is an interesting read. The book begins with a perfect diamond being delivered to an expert diamond dealer. There is no return address, no note explaning the mysterious appearance of the valuable diamond. It is estimated to be worth millions. Later he discover that not only has a diamond been sent to him, but to four other American diamond dealers. All the diamonds match perfectly, even the top diamond expert can't tell one from another. Who sent them? Why? He places detectives on the job. No diamonds matching the description have been imported from any other country. Were they smuggled? or is there some other explanation? Read and find out!

In my search for more, I found THE LEAK and THE DIAMOND MASTER on Amazon. The price was perfect. With a Kindle, the price was zero.THE DIAMOND MASTER does not include Futrelle's character Augustus S.F.X Dusenm Ph.D.,LL.D.,F.R.X.,MD, but the storyline is very much in the "Thinking Machine" tradition.I evaluate stories by answering two questions: First, does the storyline distract me from the exercise machine that I am using while reading the book. For me, the answer was YES. So, that's good. Second, could I figure the ending. Well, sort of. But I needed to finish the novel to make sure I was correct. So that's good.In the end, THE DIAMOND MASTER is a good read - especially considering the price!

Really nice premise, a treat of too many diamonds, fairly reasonable resolution. The first half of the story more fun than the last, but the best thing about this novella was its charm. Old, but not dated in a tedious way, the writing was very enjoyable plus it was good to be reminded that once upon a time mysteries were solved without all the advantages of modern technology. Fun quick read of a bygone era's crime and detection.

Did you know that there's a single business building secret that is directly responsible for the success of companies ranging from Copyblogger to Netflix, authorities like Neil Patel and Seth Godin, and thousands of other businesses? That secret is the Audience Revolution: the new and better way to build a business, make a difference, and change the world. In this short and easy read, you'll learn how this strategy is reshaping the business landscape, and creating the unique opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs to make a massive income by making a deep and profound impact. The big idea that I teach in the book is that - unlike the traditional strategy of a lot of old-school businesses - you don't start by thinking of something to sell, and then looking for people who want to buy it. Instead, you start by finding the people who resonate with your message and connect with your ideas, attract them to you, and then - once the audience is there - offering them the things that will help them the most. It's one of those ideas that may seem counter-intuitive at first, but once you think about it for a few minutes, it's hard to imagine how anything else ever made sense. In the Audience Revolution, this idea is explained in detail, along with examples of how this approach to business has been used by successful businesses ranging from Netflix and Copyblogger, to celebrity consultants like Jim Collins and Scott Stratten, to best-selling authors like Seth Godin and Jeff Walker, to internationally renowned speakers like Randy Gage and Mitch Joel. Through their examples, you'll learn how you can apply this Audience First strategy to your online business, to get you better results faster, make you more profitable, and decrease your risk, all at the same time.

By Real Story Teller There are a lot of authors that write dribble about things they just know surface things about.Danny Inny is not in that camp.He writes about something he lives, breathes and is passionate about. Danny Iny Does it Again By CypherFaerie Danny Iny does it again: in simple, concise language, he explains the necessity of building an audience first. When business owners listen to their audience, the answers to the rest of the questions: what to sell, who to sell it to, when to sell it and for how much, are answered naturally. Danny's unique voice comes through on every page. A must-read for today's entrepreneur.

I loved this book and think every business should have this as a training manual for those employees hired to expand the business. Give the customer what they want and need.

The Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce

Review Satiric lexicon by Ambrose Bierce, first compiled as The Cynic's Word Book in 1906 and reissued under the author's preferred title five years later. The barbed definitions that Bierce began publishing in the Wasp, a weekly journal he edited in San Francisco from 1881 to 1886, brought this 19th-century stock form to a new level of artistry. Employing a terse, aphoristic style, Bierce lampooned social, professional, and religious convention, as in his definitions for bore--"A person who talks when you wish him to listen"; architect--"One who drafts a plan of your house, and plans a draft of your money"; and saint--"A dead sinner revised and edited." Many of the entries include "authenticating" citations from spurious scholarly sources. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

73 of 77 people found the following review helpful. it ain't Webster's By Orrin C. Judd Beginning in 1881 and continuing to 1906, Ambrose Bierce created a series of sardonic word definitions of his own. Many of these were collected and published as The Cynic's Word Book, which he later protested was "a name which the author had not the power to reject or happiness to approve." So in 1911, he pulled together a collection that was more to his own liking and called it The Devil's Dictionary. The entries are a tad uneven in quality, but most are amusing and some are great. Each reader will have his own favorites, some of mine are as follows : ACQUAINTANCE, n. A person whom we know well enough to borrow from, but not well enough to lend to. A degree of friendship called slight when its object is poor or obscure, and intimate when he is rich or famous. ALLIANCE, n. In international politics, the union of two thieves who have their hands so deeply inserted in each other's pockets that they cannot separately plunder a third. BIGOT, n. One who is obstinately and zealously attached to an opinion that you do not entertain. BORE, n. A person who talks when you wish him to listen. CONSULT, v.i. To seek another's disapproval of a course already decided on. CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision. DICTIONARY, n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work. DISCRIMINATE, v.i. To note the particulars in which one person or thing is, if possible, more objectionable than another. EDUCATION, n. That which discloses to the wise and disguises from the foolish their lack of understanding. FUTURE, n. That period of time in which our affairs prosper, our friends are true and our happiness is assured. HISTORY, n. An account mostly false, of events mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers mostly knaves, and soldiers mostly fools.... A member of a large and powerful tribe whose influence in human affairs has always been dominant and controlling... He has the last word in everything; his decision is unappealable. He sets the fashions and opinion of taste, dictates the limitations of speech and circumscribes conduct with a dead-line. POLITICS, n. A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage. And, my choice for the very best among them : CONSERVATIVE, n. A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others. By all means, read it and pick out your own; you're sure to find a few that tickle your fancy. GRADE : A

Nobody's Boy, by Hector Malot

About the Author Hector Malot (1830-1907) was a French writer born in La Bouille, Seine-Maritime. He studied law in Rouen and Paris, but eventually literature became his passion. He worked as a dramatic critic for Lloyd Francais and as a literary critic for L'Opinion Nationale. His first book, published in 1859, was Les Amants. In total Malot wrote over 70 books. By far his most famous book is Sans Famille (Nobody's Boy, 1878), which deals with the travels of the young orphan Remi, who is sold to the streetmusician Vitalis at age 10. Sans Famille gained fame as a children's book, though it was not originally intended as such. He announced his retirement as an author of fiction in 1895, but in 1896 he returned with the novel L'amour Dominateur as well as the account of his literary life Le Roman de mes Romans (The Novel of my Novels).

In Vietnamese, it is translated as: "Khong Gia Dinh" or "Vo Gia Dinh", meaning "No Family". It is a masterpiece in literature, and it is still in print in Vietnam. It makes a wonderful children book and a deeply moving and meaningful story for the adults as well.It is a story about an orphan boy, abandoned by his family. He was raised by his kind adopted mother, and was sold by his adopted father in hardship to a traveling man who eventually, became his teacher and a father-figure. With his teacher, he learned to play music and perform on the street with 3 intelligent dogs and a monkey. He traveled through the towns of France, and through life twist and turn, eventually, lead to the ultimate search for his real family. The book provides insightful description of life on the street and heart warming relationship through life struggles and survival.

It was one of the best books I had ever read and my parents gave it to me for 'Sinterklaas', which is a day on which we exchanged presents. The translated Dutch title is "Alone in the world". It's a story about a boy without a family, his ups and downs and his remarkable character. For some reason the book got lost while we moved to the U.S.A., but I never forgot the story. Not too long ago (I'm 74 years old now) I realized I would never be able to read the book again, because I did not remember the author. "Never mind" said the librarian, "just type in the Dutch title and we might be able to find it". Sure enough, there it was on the computer screen :"Nobody's Boy", by Hector Malot. The librarian ordered it for me and we (my husband and I) enjoyed it even more than in our youth. Our two sons and their children have also read it and it's on their list of favorite books. We will now buy it and add this wonderful book to our library at home.

I wasn't sure of the name of the author but took a chance and ordered anyway. I was delighted to find it was the same book I had loved so many years ago. A poignant and touching story about a boy looking for his family, it was a book I couldn't put down. Vivid and stirring, well written, touching ... all describe this wonderful book. I highly recommend it for any age.

Gaspar Ruiz, by Joseph Conrad

About the Author Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

Why do you come to Egypt? Do you come to gain a dream, or to regain lost dreams of old; to gild your life with the drowsy gold of romance, to lose a creeping sorrow, to forget that too many of your hours are sullen, grey, bereft? What do you wish of Egypt? The Sphinx will not ask you, will not care. The Pyramids, lifting their unnumbered stones to the clear and wonderful skies, have held, still hold, their secrets; but they do not seek for yours. The terrific temples, the hot, mysterious tombs, odorous of the dead desires of men, crouching in and under the immeasurable sands, will muck you with their brooding silence, with their dim and sombre repose. The brown children of the Nile, the toilers who sing their antique songs by the shadoof and the sakieh, the dragomans, the smiling goblin merchants, the Bedouins who lead your camel into the pale recesses of the dunes—these will not trouble themselves about your deep desires, your perhaps yearning hunger of the heart and the imagination.

From the Inside Flap Of the complex, richly rewarding masterworks he wrote in the last decade of his life, Little Dorrit is the book in which Charles Dickens most fully unleashed his indignation at the fallen state of mid-Victorian society. Crammed with persons and incidents in whose recreation nothing is accidental or spurious, containing, in its picture of the Circumlocution Office, the most witheringly exact satire of a bureaucracy we possess, Little Dorrit is a stunning example of how thoroughly Dickens could put his flair for the theatrical and his comic genius the service of his passion for justice.

214 of 218 people found the following review helpful. maturing beyond the prison of self By Penelope Schmitt This is my personal favorite among Dickens novels, fully equal to Bleak House, though not nearly as widely read or admired. Most reviewers miss the fact that debtors prisons had long been closed before Dickens wrote the novel, so 'reform' was in no way its objective. What he really wanted to explore was self-imprisonment. His main character, Arthur Clennam, has been imprisoned by family strictures all his life. Denied love as a child, exiled from his sweetheart as a young man to an outpost of the family business in China, left by his father only with a watch inscribed 'DNF' meaning 'do not forget' (what he doesn't know) Arthur returns to England. We first see him 'imprisoned' in quarantine with others who suffer spiritual incarcerations of their own. The spiritual heart of this novel is the story of how Arthur loses hope that he can 'go home again' and pick up with his old life, how he reconstructs a personal life and satisfying work, and how he endures the collapse of the past and all its guilty debts, ultimately being set free to live life on a new foundation. This novel will hearten those who have arrived in the middle of our lives feeling that like Arthur, we stand among ruins, 'descending a green and growing tree' whose limbs die and wither under us as we come down. But when he is finally stripped of everything, Arthur gains all. While this great bildungsroman of maturity is being carried forward, Dickens offers a wealth of characters, plots, and subplots that will keep Dickens lovers turning pages in well-founded faith that Boz will once again knit all together in a satisfying tapestry of incident and meaning. It could be summed up as "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." All the characters are jailed by something--Little Dorrit herself by her prison home, her father by his dependency and pathetic grasping for reputation. Blandois, the wicked murderer, shows up first in a Marseilles prison and bestrides the plot with his vile presence. Arthur's mother stays voluntarily imprisoned in a decaying house and her wheelchair, and worse, in wrath and jealousy. We also meet a housemaid trapped in uncontrollable rage, the woman who abducts her, walled in pride and hatred, a young woman trapped in adoration of a worthless husband, parents frozen in grief over a lost child, a financier transfixed with the knowledge of his own falsity . . . and more. Secrets, nightmares, murders, lost deeds and treasure, stolen fortunes, all abound in this vivid and satisfying plum pudding of a novel. Modern readers may weary of the satirical chapters on 'the Circumlocution Office'--but they're no worse than the treatment of the Court of Chancery in Bleak House. The best of this novel is that it is not all written just for the satisfactory settlement of some young person, but rather for the arrival at full maturity of a man who is already adult at the novel's opening. Arthur (one remembers that Britain's legendary king bore that name) rescues others from despair, and finally learns to let others so rescue him. This is a redemptive novel, that shows us it is possible to see that we are inside the prison of who we've been taught we are, and believe we can't stop being, and it is possible to break beyond those prison walls and 'go down to a life' of quiet decency and common happiness. A great, grownup read!

Thanks to the BBC dramatization, it has been saved from obscurity. Even though the television adaptation is quite good, it is no substitute for reading the full text of the book. I would disagree with those who say this was not one of the author's best novels; on the contrary, I feel it is one of his very best. Dickens wrote so many great books of which I am a fan. Among my favorites are: Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield. Of all these masterpieces, Little Dorrit is my absolute favorite. I heard somewhere that Shaw felt Little Dorrit was Dickens's best work. Who am I to argue with Shaw? I believe many critics and those who study Dickens would agree. Ironically, the work was wildly popular during Dickens own life when it was published in serial form. In fact, that is the best way to read the novel...in small portions. You will choke to death if you try and consume it in one bite. This novel is too big and rich to devour quickly. I had a difficult time getting into the book after the initial few chapters but was richly rewarded as I continued on. This is not a book for lightweights. The length of the book is quite intimidating, the plot is complex, and the characters numerous; that being said, it is well worth the effort to read. I could not put it down as I came to the last few hundred pages. I absolutely loved it by the time I finished the book. It is one of Dickens's darker novels, which may put some off. Even so, many, if not most, of Dickens novels deal with unpleasant topics, and there is quite a bit of humor (Flora, her aunt, Afferty...) in Little Dorrit to balance the darkness. In fact the book is full of balance - wonderful Dickens prose, masterful characterization, as well as one the best plots ever devised. As others have said so well, this novel stands up to multiple readings. I certainly plan to reread and savor it many times.

Dickens takes us from Marseilles, home to an evil man whose smile makes his moustache disappear under his top lip and draws us into a dark, damp, murky Victorian London where one's whole future existence seems to be mapped out at birth, and where to escape from one's perceived 'destiny' is both sacriligeous and impossible. The Marshalsea Prison is a place all of us can visualise - a debtors prison from which many fail to escape, the dubious honour of the Father of the Marshalsea bestowed on the longest-serving inmate. Little Dorrit - Amy - is the daughter of the Father of the Marshalsea and this is her tale, one which stretches across the grime of smoggy nineteenth century London to the pollution of Continental Europe. The cast of characters is fascinating and Dickens rarely misses a trick - each is easily comparable to people any of us knows today. I studied this book at school and I have read it four or five times since.

Hunt, Jr. The array of principles discussed are not just applicable to architecture or to business but alsoto work / life balance. It is a great "lessons learned' set of thoughts and "TIBS" ("This I Believe)that emerged as a great business developed and prospered . . all due to an organic processwithout a "handbook" or rigid set of rules . . but that organic process was not accidental. Imarveled at the simple truisms that we could all benefit from if we just applied them to whatwe do . . just as Art Gensler did.Beast idea : go home and have dinner with your family each night (even though I know that Art Gensler drove back to work after dinner : see page 138)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good start By G. McGonigle “Although Arthur Gensler’s “Art’s Principles” is written from the perspective of a seasoned, successful professional, it’s appeal is to a much broader audience. The book is a collection of the author’s observations on all aspects of management and leadership and as such reflects experience that young professionals will find useful as career guidance. The author has not presented ground-breaking new theories but by collecting what he has found to be effective in building the world’s largest planning and design organization, Mr. Gensler has offered to all entrepreneurs a distillation of proven ideas. The index alone is worth the price of the paper-bound book’s 280 plus pages. This reader spent a career in management and executive roles in a major corporate setting and wishes he had read this book at the beginning of his journey."

In recent years, the concept of “peak oil”—the moment when global oil production peaks and a train of economic, social, and political catastrophes accompany its subsequent decline—has captured the imagination of a surprisingly large number of Americans, ordinary citizens as well as scholars, and created a quiet, yet intense underground movement. In Peak Oil, Matthew Schneider-Mayerson takes readers deep inside the world of “peakists,” showing how their hopes and fears about the postcarbon future led them to prepare for the social breakdown they foresee—all of which are fervently discussed and debated via websites, online forums, videos, and novels. By exploring the worldview of peakists, and the unexpected way that the fear of peak oil and climate change transformed many members of this left-leaning group into survivalists, Schneider-Mayerson builds a larger analysis of the rise of libertarianism, the role of oil in modern life, the political impact of digital technologies, the racial and gender dynamics of post-apocalyptic fantasies, and the social organization of environmental denial.

Peak Oil: Apocalyptic Environmentalism and Libertarian Political Culture, by Matthew Schneider-Mayerson

Review “This is a highly significant, original, and engaging book. Schneider-Mayerson provides a sophisticated analysis of the rise of libertarianism in the United States and articulates well how the struggle to form a collective response reflects a decline of trust in social institutions and the rise of individualism. Peak Oil is well-written, compelling, and very timely. It will no doubt be of interest to readers both inside and outside of the academy.” (Kari Marie Norgaard, author of Living in Denial: Climate Change, Emotions, and Everyday Life)“Schneider-Mayerson’s inventive and illuminating study of the peak oil movement is just the kind of scholarly intervention we need now to help us grapple fully with the social and political challenges we face. If his exploration of the practices and beliefs of the ‘Peakists’ is cause for worry, it isn’t because of how they view fossil fuels or its environmental impact. It’s in the largely individual response of peak oil advocates to what is of necessity a collective problem. This mainstreaming of a libertarian ethos in the United States and elsewhere—on both right and left—should ring alarm bells. As much an analysis of contemporary US political culture as it is about the politics of climate change, Peak Oil makes for a stellar addition to debates in which we all have a stake today.” (Imre Szeman, University of Alberta)“From Mad Max to Mad Men, this dead-on critique of long held beliefs about masculinity and traditions of American individualism and techno-optimism—all steadily becoming associated with a ‘shift towards libertarianism’—is by turns entertaining, insightful, and troubling. The book clearly outlines how these traditions and beliefs present daunting challenges to communities interested in organizing and implementing effective and timely responses to accelerating global climate change.” (Joni Adamson, coeditor of American Studies, Ecocriticism, and Citizenship)“Schneider-Mayerson interprets the tendency towards insularity and inactivism as a sign of the peak-oil subculture having accepted more of the dominant mentality of the past few decades than one might expect: in particular, a deep distrust of collective action, and of the state as capable of doing anything without screwing it up, combined with fatalism and an abiding sense of powerlessness. And feeling powerless, one places no demands on those who do have power (the first step toward gaining any). The belief in an inevitable collapse and disintegration of society is stupefying, if not self-fulfilling.” (Inside Higher Ed)

About the Author Matthew Schneider-Mayerson is assistant professor of social sciences (environmental studies) at Yale-NUS College, Singapore.

This would make a great book for teaching a course in Environmental Studies By Cameron Leader-Picone A fascinating and cogent analysis of a critical topic during the age of climate change. The author strongly engages with the arguments of peak oil while situating it within debates about limits to growth, and the larger political culture of energy in the United States. This would make a great book for teaching a course in Environmental Studies, and is readable enough for the general reader.

By Alessia Baccarini I bought this book after seeing a great Ted Talk by the author (which is how I find many interesting authors). The book did not disappoint. It is an extremely well written and fascinating read. On the surface it is about the peak movement, but the author deftly uses his analysis to dissect some of the most significant invisible forces influencing society's current trajectory, including individualism and techno-optimism. As a scientist and ardent technologist, I found myself second guessing some of my own long-held beliefs and re-thinking my views. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Write on! By peggyb Because this writer is so perceptive and adept, I found myself fascinated with this book, an in-depth look at a recent and brief era of the new millennium . I remember worrying about peak oil for a few years, and then, with a sinking heart, watching oil prices fall as an administration that had promised action on climate change moved instead to an "all of the above" energy policy and letters about global warming were answered with thanks "for your interest in energy self sufficiency" -- because there was no form letter template for those concerned with global warming. I will eagerly await this writer's future publications and appearances. I hope he will also become a serious activist, because we need minds like his to help us make the best possible use of the tiny remaining window of hope for human civilization.

INTRODUCTION

This second edition is written for the busy manager who wants to add an element of team-building to a meeting. More than a dozen new activities are included, along with helpful hints for virtual teams. Team-building becomes more difficult when members are in different locations. I've shown how half of the activities in this book can be modified to work with videoconferencing, web meetings, and even simple conference calls. I've also clarified some of the directions for several activities to make them work better with today's technology. You can expect every activity to take less than 15 minutes to conduct and discuss. Busy managers (and their staffs) do not have hours and hours to spend work-ing on their teams. They need activities that are quick and to the point.

Can you really get results in less than 15 minutes? Yes, as long as your expectations are realistic. Longstanding issues will not be re-solved. Age-old antagonists will not emerge as best friends. Major obstacles will not disappear. However, important team issues will be brought to light. Strangers will become acquaintances. Group norms will be established. Feelings will be validated. Camaraderie will be enhanced. In the end, a stronger team spirit will be fostered.

All activities can be done with only a few materials, or even none at all. You will not have to run to the store for odd materials to conduct these activities. In fact, more than half of the activities require nothing more than pen and paper! The materials required for the rest of them are sim-ple things often found at work, such as paper clips, markers, index cards, pennies, old magazines, and so forth. Only a few activities require special materials such as a deck of cards, balloons, or a puzzle.

Each activity has one or more specific, focused objective. Teambuilding activities are usually fun, and the ones in this book definitely are. Fun is not the primary focus of any activity in this book, though. Each activity is designed to help your group come together as a team in one way or another. You can have fun while you learn and grow together!

A busy manager like you can run every activity here easily. They are simple to understand and easy to prepare for. Some of them can be conducted successfully moments after you read them for the first time. You can pick up this book on your way to a meeting and use an activity from it right then and there!

The outline for each activity is easy to follow. Each one is presented in the same easy-to-read, bulleted format:

This is . . . explains very briefly what the activity is.

The purpose is . . . tells what the purpose or objective of the activity is.

Use this when . . . gives you clues you should look for that will tell you if this is the right activity for the purpose you and your team are thinking about.

Materials you'll need . . . tells you everything you will need for the activity. Often, it's nothing!

Here's how . . . outlines, step by step, how to conduct the activity.

For example . . . illustrates how the activity may play out, so you get a good sense of what to expect on each one.

Ask these questions . . . lists the best questions for each activity. These are used for the Debrief, the most important part of any team-building activity. During this session, participants discuss what they learned from the activity and relate it to their behavior back on the job.

Tips for success . . . includes things that will help you run you ac-tivity more effectively.

Try these variations . . . offers variations on the activity that can be used to spice it up, slow it down, add a level of competition, or oth-erwise alter it for a slightly different learning experience.

For virtual teams . . . offers tips for adjusting the activity for groups that meet electronically because the participants cannot be in the same physical location.

Relax, you will not find any of these types of activities here:

NO "fish bowl" activities in which only a few participants are actively involved while everyone else watches and critiques them.

NO role-plays where participants are given a fictitious role to act out or pretend.

NO demonstrations in which the leader makes a point by demon-strating something while all the participants merely watch and then discuss.

NO outdoor activities requiring large areas, nice weather, and physically fit participants.

NO handouts to prepare, copy, or distribute.

NO "touchy-feely" activities in which participants have to touch each other a lot or share intimate thoughts and feelings, activities that push the manager into the role of psychologist rather than activity leader.

Before we get to the activities, two chapters will help you with any team-building activity you want to do. The first chapter gives you start-to-finish instructions on how to run an effective team-building activity. We will discuss all three phases of the experience: before, during, and after the activity.

Before the activity, you will learn how to decide which activity is best for you and your team. Why pick any activity when you can choose one designed specifically for your team's needs? Then learn how to plan and prepare for your activity (even if you have only 2 minutes in the elevator to do so!).

During the activity, you will learn how to set the activity up for suc-cess--giving clear instructions, getting your participants to want to participate, and making sure they know what to do and how to do it. Then learn what you should do while they are engaged. Finally, you will learn how to conduct the most important element of your activity: the Debrief. This is when your participants connect what they did in the activity with their behavior on the job. If you skip this step, you may as well not even have performed the activity!

After the activity, you will learn how to make the things learned dur-ing the activity come alive in the workplace and make sure you and your team truly benefit from having done the activity in the first place.

Then, in Chapter 2, we will look at what could go wrong while engaging in an activity. Murphy's law dictates that you will eventually hit a bump or two, but that does not mean you have to fail!

The format for each potential problem is the same:

What if . . . describes the potential problem or concern you may face.

What you'll see . . . indicates what you will actually see and hear that tell you this problem has come up.

The most likely causes . . . identifies what usually causes such a problem. Only when you know the cause can you take meaningful action to avoid the problem altogether or deal with it more effectively.

How to prevent this from ever happening . . . gives ideas on how you can avoid the problem from happening in the first place.

What to do if it happens anyway . . . offers suggestions on how to handle the problem if it actually does happen (despite your best pre-ventive efforts!).

Team-building with your staff can be fun, rewarding, and productive. Seeing those creative sparks as your staff learns something important can be very exciting. Stick with it, be patient, and you will see great results after even just a few activities!

Beaulieu Miller has taken all the work out of team-building activities. The best part of this book is what it is not. If you use and yes the proper term is use, not simply read but actually use this book you will not find any of that horrid “touchy feely” stuff that usually comes with team-building exercises. As Miller states:“Relax, you will not find any of these types of activities here:NO “fish bowl” activities in which only a few participants are actually involved while everyone else watches and critiques them.NO role plays where participants are given a fictitious role to act our or pretendNO demonstrations in which the leader makes a point by demonstrating something while all the participants merely watch and then discuss.NO outdoor activities requiring large areas, nice weather and physically fit participants.NO handouts to prepare, copy, or distribute. No: touchy-feely activities in which participants have to touch each other a lot or share intimate thoughts and feelings…No none of those exercises that seem to have designed merely for the entertainment of the facilitators.Instead these 50 useful and very pertinent exercises are designed to fit the normal grown-up business world where serious grown-ups come to learn something. Each activity is laid out so that the facilitator will have a complete understanding as to the purpose of the activity and can pass in that pertinence to the group. Each activity is outlined as follows:This is… which explains exactly what the activity isThe purpose is… tells what the purpose of or objective of the activity is.Use this when…Gives you clues you should look for that will tell you if this is the right activity for the purpose you and your team are thinking about.Materials you’ll need…Here’s how…outlines step-by-step how to conduct the activityFor example…Illustrates how the activity might play out so that you have a good sense of what to expect on each one.Ask these questions…list the best questions to ask…Tips to success…includes things that will help you run the activity more effectively.Try these variations…offers tips for adjusting the activity for groups that meet electronically because the participants cannot be in the same physical location.I don’t know about you but I have run many sales meetings and the most challenging thing in running those meetings was coming up with activities that were not silly or demeaning for my sales people to take part in.Here is an example of one of the activities that I found particularly useful:This is called “Listen Up” which is designed to test your participants listening skills, something we all need to work. In this exercise the participants pair up and one them randomly chooses a pre written topic card and proceeds to tell her partner her views on that topic for three minutes. Then the listener has to give a one minute recap of what he heard. Then the reverse roles and repeat. Full disclosure I tried this with one of my groups recently and it worked very well. In fact to make it more interesting I followed the author’s advice and chose controversial topics. One was the current political animosity on this country and the other was same sex marriage…we had a lot of fun to say the least. The activities are segmented into categories so their easy to find based on your own needs. Some of the segments are: Communicating; getting to know each other and Teamwork. There is also a chapter on what can go wrong where the author teaches how to check out your team members even down to their eye contact and body motions to see if they are getting it or not then he discusses how to handle those who are not.Okay you get it. This is the one book on team building activities that I am going to use from now on and I would urge you to do the same.

"[...]supreme Command was quite content with the results obtained. The retreat of the enemy had been arrested, and a day had been gained for the crossing of the Moselle by the IInd and IIIrd Armies. August 15th.—In the early morning of the 15th the cavalry had ridden forward to the outworks of Metz, but found none of the enemy on this side of the fortress. A few shells scared away the Imperial Head-quarter from Longeville on the further side of the Moselle. As King William was riding over to visit the Ist Army, immense clouds of dust were observed rising on the further side of the fortress; and it was no longer doubtful that the French had begun their retreat, and that the IInd Army was henceforth free to follow across the Moselle with all its Corps. The Ist Corps of the Ist Army was necessarily left at Courcelles, south of Metz, to protect the railway, the other two were brought up leftward towards the Seille; and they were also by-and-by to cross the Moselle higher up, so as to avoid interference from the fortress. The French had started again on the retreat interrupted on the previous day, but proceeded little more than four miles[8] beyond Metz on[...]".

Serious and detailed Franco-Prussian war history By Robert Ruman London, 1992, Greenhill, lst UK ed thus w/DJ, , limited r/p of 1907 ed, 6x9, 447 pp. appendice lists detailed German & French orders of Battle down to reguiment., 1 MAP.Helmuth von Moltke was promoted to Field Marshal and created Graf von Moltke by the ambitious William I of Prussia and his Chancellor Bismarck on the consolidation of the German empire in 1871, after his triumphs in the Franco-German War. A brilliant intellectual, his strategy and generalship had prevailed against the apparently mighty military power of Napoleon III of France. Napoleon had thought to bolster popular support for his rule by extending his territory to the Rhine. Instead he lost his throne and France was humiliatingly forced to cede Alsace and Lorraine.By the time this war broke out, von Moltke had already achieved outstanding and surprising successes against Austria in the Six Weeks' War in 1866, and, a perfectionist in organisation, was the creator of the General Staff system of today. Rapidity of attack by the use of railway transport was as successful in France as in his earlier victories, but in France defeat of the army was followed by a people's war before final victory was achieved, exemplified most vividly by the long and horrific siege of Paris.Against military autobiography in principle, von Moltke was nevertheless prevailed upon to write the history of this war, thus achieving for the reader the best of both worlds - a careful and accurate description of events, combined with insights into strategy which as commander only he could authoritatively give. From the preparations for war and the combat of Weissenburg on 4th August 1870, von Moltke sweeps the reader through his carefully planned campaign including every stage of the war up to the armistice and the homeward march of the victorious German army. Von Moltke is considered by many the most able mind in military matters since Napoleon, and in this unimpeachable work has left for posterity the rare legacy of a complete war recorded from the viewpoint of its commander-in-chief.

By thesheikh Helmuth von Moltke, "The Man of Silence," eschewed memoir, disliking the inflation of role and ego such works generally embody. But by the time he designed his consummate success in France, here told in brilliantly clear and concise prose, he had also become one of Germany's great literary voices, a man whose works describing nations outside Germany, along with his letters, are still taught in LITERATURE courses in Germany today. That he happened to be the single greatest military mind in the long history of warfare between Napoleon and 1939 is an amazing double-role -- but no coincidence. Educated as a humanist and a soldier, he carried on the traditions of both, richly. You will learn when you read this how much he accomplished, in how revolutionary a manner -- and you will learn why he is still a relevant literary figure. So, put your endlessly self-contradictory and long-winded Clausewitz aside and read a man who really knew how to write -- and win major wars.
