Fantastic stuff By T-bone Malone Mrs Henry Wood does bad women very well, she also portrays small town life and what happens when a favored son goes to the bad excellently well. This is one of Mrs Henry Wood's most enjoyable novels as she mostly avoids preaching and it is briskly written. There is also an interesting depiction of depression and its effects on a character. Obviously it's not as poetically written as George Eliot's "Middlemarch", but if you enjoy "Middlemarch" then this will also prove an interesting read.

"[...] "It's—nothing; you wouldn't understand, child," said Polly quickly. "There, don't ask." Phronsie crept away in a grieved fashion, to be presently folded into Polly's warm arms. "I'm bad to-day, Phronsie dear. There, Pet, now you are all right, aren't you?" as she hugged her close. "I am, if you are, Polly," said Phronsie doubtfully. "Well, I'm all right now," said Polly, her brow clearing; "the bad has gone at last, I hope, to stay away, Phronsie. Now I must hurry and eat this nice luncheon you've fixed for me;" and she sprang toward the table. "Don't you want to write a note first?" asked Phronsie, wondering at Polly's strange mood, and following her to the table-edge, "you said so." "No; I've given it up," said Polly, sitting down and beginning on her chop[...]".

About the Author Margaret Sidney was the pen name for Harriet M. Stone who was born in New Haven, Connecticut. Although her life spanned more than half of the 19th century, we know little about her until the 1880's when her novel Five Little Pepper and How They Grew appeared in the magazine Wide Awake. I was so attached to this book that when I went to college, I took it along. When my roommate discovered I had this book, she carried it off and ignored everything else (including homework!) for several days. My copy traveled four floors of my dorm, and while returning it, I met girls who had read it and loved it, but never could find a copy to buy; girls who had never known that a sequel to the Peppers existed, and were delighted to read it for the first time; and girls who read it because they were curious as to what dozens of their doormmates were getting so excited about. When I left my dorm, I donated the book to our dorm library so every succeeding generation can discover this wonderful book.It is truly one of the best children's books out there. The character's are the same loveable but delightfully human ones we met in "The Five Little Peppers." The boys are off at a bording school, and the fights, challenges and school comraderies are as diverting as they must have been to readers of the time. Polly is at an exclusive girl's school as a day pupil, and her experiences are what all my doormates were fascinated by. The way these girls reacted with each other, the degrees of friendship between girls, and especially the interaction of these teenage girls with the young men in their lives are intriguing to read about. The book has a gently moralistic tone, as did the first, that should not put off readers. It offers a unique glimpse of what people can be: charitable, family-oriented, intelligent, loyal, and especially resourceful. In an age where we are bombarded with sex, violence, and never-ending confessionals, this book is a breath of fresh air. Take it off the shelf and enjoy it.Incidentally, the Pepper series does not stop here. I was told by my dorm librarian that there is even a book about Phronsie's teenage years that was her favourite, but has since gone of out print. Maybe Amazon will find this one for us too.

It centers around Joel, the middle Pepper child. The Pepper children are: Ebenezer (Ben), Mary (Polly), Joel, David, and Saphronia (Phronsie). They live in 19th centry New England in their little brown house with their "Mamsie". Their dad died when Phronsie was a baby. This book has everything from fires to circuses and a bull to a snake. The Peppers are very, very poor but they always seem to have good times in spite of it. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did and if you like this book don't fail to read the other 11, if you havent already. Michael

I found Polly a wonderful role model and she helped me feel like I wasn't so alone in my troubles. I read it over and over. I tried to follow her example as the oldest child in how I helped my brother and sister. It also helped me realize that money is helpful but there are more important things. Even though it is set in a bygone era, the essence of the book is timeless and classic. When I was young and poor, it was one of the few books I was allowed and I treasured it. And, even though I'm a bookworm and have read many other books, it will always be my favorite.

The history of life on Earth is dominated by extinction events so numerous that over 99.9% of the species ever to have existed are gone forever. If animals could talk, we would ask them to recall their own ancestries, in particular the secrets as to how they avoided almost inevitable annihilation in the face of daily assaults by predators, climactic cataclysms, deadly infections and innate diseases.

In Tears of the Cheetah, medical geneticist and conservationist Stephen J. O'Brien narrates fast-moving science adventure stories that explore the mysteries of survival among the earth's most endangered and beloved wildlife. Here we uncover the secret histories of exotic species such as Indonesian orangutans, humpback whales, and the imperiled cheetah-the world's fastest animal which nonetheless cannot escape its own genetic weaknesses.

Among these genetic detective stories we also discover how the Serengeti lions have lived with FIV (the feline version of HIV), where giant pandas really come from, how bold genetic action pulled the Florida panther from the edge of extinction, how the survivors of the medieval Black Death passed on a genetic gift to their descendents, and how mapping the genome of the domestic cat solved a murder case in Canada.

With each riveting account of animal resilience and adaptation, a remarkable parallel in human medicine is drawn, adding yet another rationale for species conservation-mining their genomes for cures to our own fatal diseases. Tears of the Cheetah offers a fascinating glimpse of the insight gained when geneticists venutre into the wild.

Tears of the Cheetah, by Stephen J. O'Brien

From Publishers Weekly The 14 firsthand evolutionary yarns collected here are the equivalent of genomic Aesop's fables. By turns passionate, understated, unexpectedly literate and historically astute, O'Brien, head of the National Institutes of Health's Laboratory of Genomic Diversity, is a breath of fresh air: he's written a genetics book that neither probes the ambiguous legacy of genetic engineering nor seeks to entice us with yet another last-word account of the race to map the human genome-and judiciously dispensing with jargon wherever possible, O'Brien's a smooth read as well. The author does not tell us the genetic fable of how the leopard got its spots, but he comes close. The title story recounts his research team's startling discovery of near-complete genetic uniformity among cheetahs, derived possibly from a brush with extinction that forced inbreeding. O'Brien enters a century-old debate on the taxonomy of the endangered panda, whether it belongs to the bear or the raccoon family: a little molecular-genetic detective work revealed it to be either, depending on the species (there is actually more than one). He reads and learns from the genetic histories of the humpback whale and other exotic species. An underlying theme of the book is how these parables illuminate human medicine-how, for example, insights into cat immunodeficiency could lead to a cure for AIDS; another could be said to be self-congratulation for his articles in Nature, his textbook citations and press clippings. But this is only a minor irritation. O'Brien is an explorer of the first order, intrepid and curious. His accomplishments, including this modest book, are considerable. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From The New England Journal of Medicine For a molecular biologist, Stephen O'Brien has led an adventuresome life. Tears of the Cheetah recounts how the pursuit of molecular biology in his laboratory led to some of his far-flung pursuits. He collected sperm from wild East African cheetahs on the Serengeti Plain; placated a Dutch princess who thought he was shooting Tanzanian lions with bullets, rather than with anesthetizing darts; chased humpback whales in a Zodiac rubber raft; cuddled a baby giant panda in a thick Chinese bamboo forest; confronted a crown prosecutor during a Prince Edward Island murder trial in reference to the identification of a cat by DNA from a hair; and tracked orangutans in Borneo to perform skin biopsies. O'Brien is chief of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the National Cancer Institute. His book tells how the institute is applying molecular biology to the problems of endangered species. A recurrent theme is how a population bottleneck, reducing a population to a small number, can lead to a reduction in genetic variation as the surviving population increases. The resulting reductions in sperm count and testosterone levels and increases in infant mortality and birth defects imperil the survival of the population, as in the examples of East African cheetahs, African and Asiatic lions, and the Florida panther. Other examples of how techniques from the discipline of molecular genetics have helped ameliorate the problems of endangered species include working out how to tell when a species is genuinely an endangered species and therefore entitled to protection; detecting the DNA of whales of endangered species (not to be hunted) in "fish" from Japanese and Korean fish markets, thus proving illegal whaling; and deciding whether giant pandas are bears or raccoons (they are bears, and their reduced population size is due to reduced habitat, not inbreeding). O'Brien also illuminates how and when AIDS jumped from monkeys to people, underscoring the fact that the consumption of "bushmeat" from illegally slaughtered monkeys is a deadly, but ignored, practice that threatens us all. The language is clear, though an occasional surfeit of detail may become a little tedious. Most physicians have sufficient knowledge of DNA terminology to follow the molecular story, and if the reader is not on intimate terms with RFLPs, SNPs, microsatellites, and mitochondrial chromosomes, the gist of the book is still evident, and it will broaden the reader's horizons considerably. From Booklist Presenting his lab's genetic work on endangered species, O'Brien delves into considerable but not overwhelming technical detail. In part because he's a skillful narrator, relating how his expertise was sought to solve mysteries about the lion, the panda, and the humpback whale, O'Brien's exploration of the genetic landscape of a particular species is marvelously revelatory of its history. O'Brien and his colleagues at the National Cancer Institute are able to see near-extinction events of the past in various segments of DNA that have descended to the present: the cheetah, for example, came close to dying out 12,000 years ago. A species' episodes of disease and inbreeding are recorded in the genes O'Brien discusses, information crucial to preservation efforts--even if, as the author relates of his work on the Florida panther, there is resistance to accepting the information within the conservation community. Molecular biology can be difficult to absorb, but not when a clear expositor such as O'Brien has such good stories to tell. Gilbert TaylorCopyright © American Library Association. Animal Genes and Lessons for Humans By Rob Hardy It has been but a few decades since the structure of the DNA molecule was discovered, a structure of astonishing simplicity. The complexity comes with the infinite arrangements of the four simple letters of the molecule, and the array of proteins that the arrangements code for. We are just at the beginning of understanding and using the coding, and Stephen O'Brien, head of the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the National Cancer Institutes, is one of the decoders. In _Tears of the Cheetah: And Other Tales from the Genomic Frontier_, he has told fourteen stories of deciphering DNA for the purpose of determining animal history. There are remarkable discoveries outlined here, in which O'Brien directly took part or supervised those who did (he is gracious in his acknowledgement of these colleagues), and some of the molecular science is complex and will challenge readers who are not familiar with the field. The stories themselves, however, are compelling, and will be a good introduction to just what sort of mysteries are being unlocked by our knowledge of DNA and genomes (the sum total of an animal's genes), and how the solution of the mysteries holds potential not just for intellectual satisfaction but for the benefit of humanity. The story that gives the book its title is about genetic studies of wild cheetahs, and it reflects a theme of a population bottleneck which is frequent in these pages. Because 12,000 years ago, the number of cheetahs were drastically cut (probably by an epidemic), only a handful remained to breed. When O'Brien came to investigate why cheetahs were breeding so badly in zoos and preserves, there was a shock: there was almost no variation in cheetah DNA. They were as inbred as lab mice. Some mice in China a thousand years ago, however, had been squeak by a viral plague because they had part of the virus incorporated into their own DNA; this may mean that all sorts of DNA strands of viral preventatives are awaiting our discovery, and use. There is a chapter here on Florida's endangered panthers, which like cheetahs are dangerously inbred, and the politics of conservation of species and subspecies. O'Brien explains how feline immunodeficiency virus (something like our HIV) infects many cat species but kills few of them because beneficial genetic changes are evolving. There is a fine chapter on the century of controversy about how to classify panda bears. There were good arguments from the physical characteristics of pandas that put them in the bear family, but there were others that indicated they were related more to raccoons. The argument was at a dead end; some of the means of classifying animals are based on simple human judgement and are therefore to a degree subjective. With examination of the DNA, however, O'Brien's team could show that the panda's ancestors split away from the family of bears about twenty million years ago. Pandas are bears, and the controversy is, thanks to molecular genetics, over. Looking at DNA has been the way to show that meat from endangered whales was being sold illegally in Japanese markets, forever changing the sham arguments that the Japanese used that their whaling was only for scientific research. O'Brien's team was involved in solving a murder by DNA fingerprinting, but not DNA of the murderer; O'Brien is an expert on feline DNA, and they had to make a link between the murderer and the only applicable physical evidence, cat fur on a jacket spattered by the victim's blood. The cat belonged to the murderer's family. Another chapter shows that amazingly, the human gene lines that squeaked through the bubonic plague in the Middle Ages may be the ones that are best fighting off AIDS. As both a memoir along the lines of "My Most Unforgettable Genomic Researches" and an introduction to what is going to be an increasingly important method of understanding our world's biology, _Tears of the Cheetah_ is a real success. The really tantalizing prospect, however, the main message of the book, is that humans and animals may have a genetic store of disease-fighting capacity that is only beginning to be understood, and has tremendous potential for improving health worldwide.

Stories combining wildlife, genetics and emerging diseases By A Customer The bits of the book I have read so far have been interesting and fun to read. I think the reader from Seattle with the poor spelling skills who believes that wildlife conservation is a "special interest" should quit griping in his anonymous envy of O'Brien, who has produced hundreds of scientific papers furthering our understanding of human diseases, in many cases by studying related diseases in wildlife. Many of the stories are highly interesting. Read the book.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating! By A Customer I enjoyed the book very much.I would recommend it highly for anyone who has an interest in understanding basic genetics or for someone who is just interested in learning something new. Dr. O'Brien is a wonderful story teller and writes in a language that is easily understandable. He slowly introduces the concepts in an interesting progressive manner which enables the reader to understand the more advanced concepts toward the end of the book. I thought the book was truly fascinating.

This book (best seller 1895-fiction) is a collection of stories, set in the fictional village of Drumtochty. It is thought that the village of Drumtochty was based on Logiealmond, where Maclaren began his ministerial career. The picture that he painted of rural life is closer to nostalgia than reality. It does demonstrate the importance of the Church in every aspect of people's live at that time.

He keeps it on his nightstand. It has some wonderful, heartwarming stories from a village in old Scotland. If you are or know a minister... the stories make great illustrations for sermons. I have a hard time reading it because of the old Scottish dialect... but it is one of Bill's top 5 books!

The simplicity, honesty, skillful writing brought Scottish life and life in the Church and School very much alive. The Chapter title : His Mother's Sermon should be read annually by every minister of the Word and Sacrament.

Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. The child of a family of small-town weavers, he was educated in Scotland. He moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him in writing about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about this ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. This play quickly overshadowed his previous work and although he continued to write successfully, it became his best-known work, credited with popularising the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Barrie was made a baronet by George V in 1913, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1922. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, which continues to benefit from them. James Matthew Barrie was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, to a conservative Calvinist family. His father, David Barrie, was a modestly successful weaver. His mother, Margaret Ogilvy, had assumed her deceased mother's household responsibilities at the age of eight. Barrie was the ninth child of ten (two of whom died before he was born), all of whom were schooled in at least the three Rs, in preparation for possible professional careers.

My Lady Nicotine, by J. M. Barrie

Review "Written generally in serio-comic vein, brightened with flashes of droll irony and quaint suggestion." -- London Times

About the Author J.M. Barrie was born in 1860, the ninth of ten children of hard-working parents in Scotland's jute-weaving industry. Fascinated by stories of her own life told him by his mother, he was determined to write, finding work on the Nottingham Journal after graduating from Edinburgh University. In 1885, he moved to London as a freelance writer and successfully sold the Auld Licht Idylls, a volume based on his mother's tales. By the time Peter Pan opened on the London stage in 1904, Barrie had written more than thirty novels and plays, many autobiographical and several of them major hits such as The Little Minister, Quality Street and The Admirable Crichton. Knighted and awarded the Order of Merit he continued writing into old age. He died in 1937.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A lesser-known delight from the author of Peter Pan... By Jason Carter The narrator is a former pipe smoker, ostensibly "reformed" by marriage to the superiority of the non-smoking life. However, in his quiet moments, dozing at his easy chair in the parlor -- decorated by the "new piano-stool in terra-cotta" and the "vase for growing dead geraniums" that he can now thankfully afford with the money previously spent on tobacco -- he dreams of his days as a bachelor enjoying the Arcadia Mixture with his fellow Arcadians, the select few that know the bliss of that (mythical) mixture. The bulk of the book is constructed of short, anecdotal chapters of the lives of he and his fellow Arcadians. Though tobacco is the theme that weaves in an out of the chapters and holds the story together, the book is much more expansive than that. It is really classic British humour at its best (Barrie was a Scot); you will find yourself laughing out loud and your spouse casting sidelong glances at you.

Review

“The ‘principle of relativity’ in its widest sense is contained in the statement: The totality of physical phenomena is of such a character that it gives no basis for the introduction of the concept of “absolute motion;” or shorter but less precise: There is no absolute motion.” —Albert Einstein, “The Theory of Relativity”

Even if your math skills have lost their luster it won't be a problem. I recommend reading this first, then if you're having trouble or don't understand a few points, read Einstein's Universe by Nigel Calder.

Fun to read By akompano It is an unusual Balzac masterpiece about love, passion and crime - a medieval story, fun to read, with a King turned into a detective and his avaricious silversmith, with the King's maried daughter who has a lover on the side, and the lover who tries to get closer to her by moving in with the Kings Silversmith... And above all these intrigues, the King is missing royal valuables and suspects one after the other...

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The miser's mystery By Karl Janssen Maître Cornélius, a novella by Honoré de Balzac, was originally published in 1831. The story takes place in 1479 in the city of Tours. A young nobleman visits the cathedral on All Saints’ Day for purposes of love rather than prayer. There he meets the beautiful young countess he is attempting to woo. Unfortunately, she’s married to an aged and abusive count. Finding such stolen rendezvous insufficient to satiate his lovestruck heart, the young man comes up with a plan to get closer to his loved one by establishing himself as an apprentice in the household adjacent to hers, that of the silversmith Maître Cornélius. The plan is more dangerous than it sounds, because this mysterious metalsmith from Flanders has an evil reputation and is even suspected of practicing black magic. Shunned by the citizens of Tours, his only friend is King Louis XI, who resides in the nearby chateau of Plessis-lez-Tours. Though Maître Cornélius may not be as terrible as rumors suggest, he is indeed a surly misanthrope and an incurable miser. And when he feels his riches are threatened, no one is safe from his relentless pursuit of fatal justice.Despite all the dark subject matter, Maître Cornélius is a lot of fun. Balzac layers on the spooky atmosphere, irresistibly drawing the reader into the mystery of the title character. Louis XI is another intriguing personage, a dying old man with a gleam in his eye and a sly and spritely soul. Eventually the book turns into a mystery story, and the king, of all people, gets to play detective. Through most of the story the reader really doesn’t know what’s going to happen next, but towards the end things do get a little predictable. While the concluding revelation was probably a shock to the audience of Balzac’s day, the attentive reader of today will likely fail to be surprised. That’s a small mark against this otherwise highly entertaining story, however. The best thing about Maître Cornélius is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Like every story involving a miser, there’s a moral about the perils of greed, but here it’s more of an afterthought than a pervasive theme. In the first few years of his writing career, Balzac’s output was all over the map in terms of subject matter and quality. In his earlier, shorter works he often expends all his energy and ink building exquisite atmosphere and suspense, then raps everything up with a hasty and unsatisfying conclusion. That criticism also applies to this story, somewhat, but overall Maître Cornélius is one of the best of Balzac’s earlier works. Those who enjoy his better-known novels will certainly appreciate this gem of a novella.

    Review

"Renowned artists are commissioned to design the binding for each of [White's Books]'s beautifully crafted hardcovers."  —Fuck Yeah, Book Arts!

From the Publisher The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, though lesser-known literature.

From the Inside Flap Charlotte Bronte's impassioned novel is the love story of Jane Eyre, a plain yet spirited governess, and her arrogant, brooding Mr. Rochester. Published in 1847, under the pseudonym of Currer Bell, the book heralded a new kind of heroine--one whose virtuous integrity, keen intellect and tireless perseverance broke through class barriers to win equal stature with the man she loved. Hailed by William Makepeace Thackeray as "the masterwork of great genius," Jane Eyre is still regarded, over a century later, as one of the finest novels in English literature. From the Paperback edition.

Bronte was simply a genius and a harbinger of romantic, dramatic, gothic, and horror writing. (However, it still irks me that she couldn't end a simple sentence with a period. Every declarative statement, it seems, must be qualified with a colon or semi-colon. Oh well. Sign of the times.)As for the Norton edition, it's the only one to buy. Bronte makes the assumption that you have read the Bible cover-to-cover a zillion times, and for those of us who have not read it through once, Norton's annotations are more than helpful---they're essential to understanding the novel's Christian allusions. This edition also provides the reader with critical essays, contexts of Bronte's life, Bronte's reactions to critics of her day, etc.Bottom line: you can get the Dover Thrift edition for a couple bucks, but, if you are interested in giving this classic more than a cursory read, this edition is worth the extra money.

206 of 231 people found the following review helpful. wuthering heights editions By Jordi Vilalta Lopez Rather than delve on the contents of this strangest and strongest of English novels, so intensely poetic in its haunting darkness and otherness, I'll comment briefly on the best editions available for a good first contact:A) Text oriented editions (that is, editions with few materials added: normally an Introduction, annotation, and perhaps Charlotte's Peface and Biographical Notice and some bibliographical indications).1. Oxford World's Classics: authoritative text, good annotation, excellent introduction.2. Penguin's Classics: same as above, everything looks a little shorter but is excellent nonetheless.3. Wordsworth Classics edition. This would be a rather fine edition as befitting this collection, if it had a good 1847 text and not the heavily tampered-with Charlotte's 1850 edition. The text itself reflects accurately that of the 1900 Haworth Edition -a careful one-. The wording changes aren't perhaps so worrying nor is the toning-down of the dialectal tirades -although funny and useless-. What is worrying is the disappearance of more than six hundred paragrapph entries (I mean just the paragraphing, not the contents itself!), that makes for a different -and worse- reading experience. Very good and full -if brief- annotation. Mass-market, glued paperback.4. Heather Glen's for Routledge. One of the finest text-oriented editions, especially for the excellent Introduction and Epilogue together with its good annotation, out-of-print for rather obscure reasons. If you find still a very good to fine copy at amazon Canadian branch (or at abebooks.com, it would be a good buy.5. Orchises two-volume facsimile reprint of the 1847 edition. No notes nor any additional material. the books are well produced if a little expensive. Very interesting item, but only suitable for textual scholars or would-be scholars, or otherwise for fetish-oriented WH-maniacs.B) Study-oriented editions (i.e. editions that contain additional contextual information: early reviews, selection of Emily's poems, critical essays, chronologies of the novel or of the Bronte family...).6. Norton's Fourth Edition (current item): OK, the text is still a little idiosyncratic, but the notes are much improved, and so is everything else (with the anthology of poems, and the critical essays). A very fine study edition but also suitable for a first contact, although annotation is still on the scarce side. Good paperback production without flaps but signature-sewn (or so it seems) and good paper and printing quality (albeit with a rather small type).7. Broadview edition by Beth Newman: it's one of the best study editions overall. There are some minor textual foibles and the annotation is decidedly scanty (to make amends for Heywood excesses) but good and accurate, and both Prof. Newman ecellent Introduction and the selection of the additional contextual material is, arguably, the finest ever (including the very interesting document on "Brain fever"). Materially speaking, it is a good paperback without flaps with good paper and printing quality (like Norton Critical, although I can't ascertain without tearing apart my copy of Beth Newman's that it be signature-sewn instead of glue-only "perfect binding). In any case a very good buy.7. Alison Booth's for Longman Cultural. Other of the very best study editions available. The text is deadly acuurate -except for some 1850 unobtrusive detail- on theClarendon 1976 reference critical edition, although the punctuation -like Norton Critical, Broadview's Newman and Oneworld's one- has been silently lightened and modernized throughout. It looks like glue-only "perfect binding" paperback, but perhaps it is signature-sewn. Paper and printing quality are good enough. The only misgiving I have is the overdone fragmentation of contextual material (good and relevant material though it is): there are 40+ items, many of them very short or they wouldn't fit into 430 pages. One of the best possible buys.8. Onewold's Classics edition. A fine paperback edition with flaps, very good paper and printing quality and (I rather surmise than know for sure) signature-sewn. The text looks like 1847 in paragraphing but it takes in toomany of 1850 "improvements" and is wrong at some places: it's short of a disaster, but rather non-reliable (in spite of the well-meant efforts by the almost anonymous editing panel who perpetrated it). Annotation is good and comprehensive enough, but the contextual material is rather scanty and run-of-the-mill non-commital.9. Barnes&Noble's Tatiana Holway edition (hardcover). To say it promptly the only fault with this lovely edition (but, as stated above in wordsworth Classics edition, a really big fault) is its accurate and reliable 1850 Haworth Edition text. Other than this, it looks as a popularly oriented edition, but with quality marks. The Introduction by Daphne Merkin is good enough, the annotation by Holway is really excellent. Supplementary material is very scanty: the "Charlotte's prefatory materials" of 1850 (prefixed to the text, which is a pity), and some comments about film and TV adaptations as well as some chosen excerpts of reviews. Material production is outstanding: nice hardcover with dust jacket, good paper and printing quality, the only good available edition in a becoming format (Clarendon Edition is very hard to come by nowadays: say one to three years to pin it down). Don't forget the Franklin Mint editions of the sixties and seventies if you are interested in a very beautiful book with a reliable 1847 text and illustrations by Alan Reingold (and nothing else).

How many of them do you actually remember? Well, if Jane Eyre was one of those long-forgotten books, pick up a copy. To read it as an adult is a joy: it's a sweeping, disturbing, intense, thrilling, very romantic gothic love story, written in the voice of a very intense, almost claustrophobically self-aware young heroine. Jane is no Ophelia - she's a complicated, remarkable character, and a very strong female character in a genre that usually draws women as beautiful victims at best. There's something for everyone in this book: Windswept castles, difficult and neurotic family members, dark secrets about tragic former lovers, good triumphing over evil, all that good juicy stuff that makes a great romantic story. What elevates Jane Eyre is Bronte's remarkable style & skill and her sharp and complex characterizations.Trust me on this: If you don't remember it from your teens, you should give it a try now. Here is one novel that more than lives up to it's 'classic' status.
