The Long and Winding Road to Pluto By Amazon Customer As Dr. Goldsmith was researching this book, he was in close contact with many of the key players in the studyof Pluto. It was a pleasure answering his questions, and considering his "what-ifs?". Mike showed me someearly copy which allowed misconceptions or little mistakes to be corrected. Mike has a knack of being able to explainthe technical concepts of one field to those not in that area of research. And his interleaving of the concurrentevolution of Pluto-based science fiction is a twist that gives the layman a break from the gory details of a textbook.Pictures and graphs are well-chosen to illustrate the concepts being explained, many coming directly from the scientific literature.Mike kept an on the "human element" throughout---the scientists and engineers who got us to Pluto. In the once-tinyPluto research community, how people interacted, collaborated, disagreed, and moved on is important. Who was a graduatestudent under whom, and how they moved on to become faculty and leaders in the field in their own time. The book is entertaining, informative, and a well-balanced view of what we knew about Pluto before the New Horizonsencounter, and some of the first-look results of the mission. Mike did a great job writing a book that would not immediatelybecome obsolete when the ink dried.

''Herman Melville is one of American literature's greatest figures.'' -The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English

An aging lawyer hires a new copyist to help with his firm’s workload, and at first he finds himself pleased with his new employee. Bartleby is quiet, efficient and he doesn’t display any of the loud eccentricities of the firm’s other two copyists, Nippers and Turkey. But one day, when the lawyer asks Bartleby if he will help him compare copies, Bartleby simply replies, “I would prefer not to.” As time goes by and Bartleby’s strange refusals multiply, the lawyer becomes increasingly dumbfounded and Bartleby’s apathy escalates into the ridiculous.

“Bartleby, the Scrivener” is an entertaining romp by Herman Melville, author of Moby-Dick, which has been studied and interpreted in countless ways over the years. Some scholars claim that the character of Bartleby is a response to American transcendentalism, while others suggest that he reflects Melville’s disillusionment with his writing career. Whatever the case, “Bartleby, the Scrivener” has become one of the most famous early American short novels, paving the way for other satirical and absurdest literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Review ''Herman Melville is one of American literature's greatest figures.'' --The Cambridge Guide to Literature in English

About the Author Herman Melville was an American novelist, poet, and writer of short stories. His contributions to the Western canon are the whaling novel Moby-Dick (1851); the short work Bartleby, the Scrivener (1853) about a clerk in a Wall Street office; the slave ship narrative Benito Cereno (1855); and Billy Budd, Sailor (1924). When asked which of the great American writers he most admired, Vladimir Nabokov replied: "When I was young I liked Poe, and I still love Melville, whom I did not read as a boy.”

The novella is available for purchase in several book formats, some of which contain excellent critical essays on this important American author and his work. This Kindle edition contains only the text of the novella, but it is free and that's great."Bartleby the Scrivener" is a very accessible short novella by the author of "Moby Dick." It tells the story of a strange young man named Bartleby who shows up one morning at a New York law firm and is employed as a copyist (scrivener.) In those days (mid-nineteenth century), legal work was horrendously tedious for the clerks since huge briefs and depositions had to be copied by hand by men who did nothing all day but write a clear hand (and try not to leave ink blots on the paper,) and then check their work by reading it aloud back to each other. This is one of my favorite novellas (really a long short story). Wittily narrated by the harassed lawyer who owns the law firm, it describes the characters of those copyists who are employed there, and tells of the strange Bartleby who just decides to stop doing any work one day, telling his exasperated employer that he "prefers not to."The story is a wonderful mixture of high comedy, pathos and fascinating commentary on the human condition. I re-read it at least once a year, and I always enjoy it and get something fresh from Melville's wise insights and his wonderful wit.Highly recommended.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. A Literary Innovation: the Clueless Narrator By Gio "Bartleby" is strictly speaking just a magazine sketch, one of a batch of informal sketches from magazines reprinted together as The Piazza Tales. It has the format of a memoir of an eccentric character, Bartleby, as told by a nameless first-person narrator, "an eminently safe man" by his own account, a lawyer who earns his living through the most mundane, routine legal paperwork, who also complains that 'reformers' have deprived him of his lucrative sinecure in state government. "I am a man who, from his youth upwards, has ben filled with a profound conviction that the easiest way of life is the best," he says of himself. In short, in this "Story of Wall Street", he is a drone, a financial parasite, and he would have been recognized as such by Melville's readership in the 1850s, a era when Wall Street was regarded with as much suspicious as in 2009. He is also a smug, sanctimonious, cautious man, irritably comfortable to exploit the labor of his copyists, one of whom is an impaired alcoholic and the other perhaps a pre-medication psychotic. When the third impaired eccentric, Bartleby, joins the staff, our Narrator is readily 'generous' in tolerating him as long as he can make a dime. It seems to me fairly obvious that we readers are supposed to treat the Narrator with distrust, perhaps even dislike.Melville wrote at the beginning of the now-established literary tradition of the 'unreliable narrator', supplanting the omniscient narrator of the majority of 19th C novels. But Melville transcends that tradition in his first effort, giving us a 'clueless' narrator, an observer who is honest only in his acknowledgement of his complete non-understanding of his subject. To accept the Narrator's analysis of Bartleby would be a fatal error of readerly judgement. Whatever Melville's subtext in this story -- whatever Melville wants to tell us -- that Narrator is the one person who can't possibly be expected to comprehend it.Melville also wrote at the end of the ancient tradition of 'allegory.' His only literary peer and friend, Nathaniel Hawthorne, was the grand master of slyly allegorical short tales, and it makes sense to examine Bartleby as a specimen of the allegorical genre. Thus we need to ask who the Narrator figures for, and who the Scrivener, and then what it is, really, that Bartleby "prefers" not to participate in. My interpretation is that N represents the entire commercial/financial culture of 19th C America, while Bartleby embodies all those who are aliens within that system, first by necessity and then by bitter choice. Bartleby, in effect, prefers not to be a link in that chain, a cog in that machine.Another school of literary criticism would examine Melville's personal life for clues of his authorial intentions. It's widely known that Melville was finding his inability to "make a decent living and support his family" both frustrating and frightening during the decade after the commercial failure of Moby Dick. In fact, Melville found himself on the verge of becoming a patronage drone, a place-holder in the New York Customs Office. It may be important to realize that Melville's father-in-law, Justice Lemuel Shaw of the Massachusetts Supreme Court, was both an extremely powerful man in America at the time, and a man of energetic personal forcefulness. It's hard to believe that Melville was not intimidated and oppressed by Shaw, yet no more able to make a case for himself than poor Bartleby.I'm just tossing off suggestions here, my friends. Bartleby is an enigma wrapped in complexity, and no final interpretation would stand up to a second reading. When I first read it, in the 1960s, it was still neglected and overshadowed among Melville's works by "Billy Budd". It's been interesting to watch the emergence of recognition among readers that Bartleby is one of the greatest short masterpieces of the English language. One thing more to say about Bartleby is that it's marvelously funny. It's Herman Melville's best assimiliation of the ludricrous style of Charles Dickens and other Victorian writers. The first dozen pages, before the appearance of Bartleby, are devoted to comedy in the form of exaggerated portrayals of the three hapless employees of the nameless narrator. Each of these comic-relief figures will be brought back into service at intervals in the subsequent tale. It's supremely important, dear reader, to recognize Melville's sardonic humor; other reviewers who rated Bartleby at two stars or less clearly "didn't get the joke."

Seemingly simple story about the choices we make daily By Linda Linguvic Herman Melville wrote this story in 1853, two years after Moby Dick had been published and his writing career was beginning to lose its luster. Subtitled, "A Story of Wall Street", it is a seemingly simple story about a lawyer who hires a gentleman named Bartleby as a scrivener in his office. This was way back in the days before photocopy machines and scriveners performed the necessary tasks of tediously hand copying documents over and over. Bartleby was good at the copying part of his job, but when asked to proofread aloud one day he simply replied, "I prefer not to." From that moment forward, he used the phrase "I prefer not to" for every task requested of him, eventually "preferring not to" do any work whatsoever. The lawyer, who is astounded by Bartleby's attitude, tells the story in the first person. The story is rich in language and yet spare in actual action. The reader is forced to think, and think seriously about the choices we make daily. Bartleby chose to rebel and become an anti-hero. But the real protagonist of the story is the lawyer, who is drawn into Bartleby's power and grows to admire him. The conclusion is sad, but inevitable. Recommended.

It is the description of an ascent up a Norwegian fjord by a girl and an other-worldy being, and, as Gautier said, "He has used no colors but the pure blue of the sky, the white of the snow, and a few pearly tints for the shadows."The rest of the book involves long didactic sermons, but as the sermons pertain to Swedenborgian theology, they are aestheitcally gratifying as well as instructive.Amateurs may be confused by the character of Seraphita/Seraphitus, who continually fluctuates between both genders, and some may fail to see how this all relates to the Human Comedy, but I think most readers will be entirely capable of enjoying and comprehending this wonderful novel.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. unforgettable portrait of spiritual attainment By Arthur S. Lutefisk One of the very greatest achievements of European literature. A pair of lovers transcend every conceivable spiritual obstacle to transcend their very sexual identities, becoming one with one another in the most refined and lofty circumstances imaginable. And you believe it, if you are ready. Balzac's and the reader's Mt. Everest, equaled but not surpassed by Holderlin's HYPERION and other great contemporaneous works of German romanticism.

Too much about obscure Christian sects By iris flannery This story about Seraphita/Seraphitus draws the reader in with well-drawn descriptions of the Norwegian fjords, icy hills, and vast spaces. However, the only thing that compelled me to keep reading past the remarkable setting was the intriguing ambiguity about whether the main character was Seraphita or Seraphitus.Unfortunately, the main point of the whole story was religious awakening. There was extensive discussion of Swedenborg, who apparently founded yet another Christian sect. So unless one is very interested in obscure Christian sects, or is willing to skip large sections of boring text this book might be avoided.

Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. The child of a family of small-town weavers, he was educated in Scotland. He moved to London, where he developed a career as a novelist and playwright. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys who inspired him in writing about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about this ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. This play quickly overshadowed his previous work and although he continued to write successfully, it became his best-known work, credited with popularising the name Wendy, which was very uncommon previously. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Barrie was made a baronet by George V in 1913, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1922. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, which continues to benefit from them.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Well, I'm a big Peter Pan fan By M Roberts I love the style of the writing. The author is so creative that it is as if this was written for children, when it is not. This is the first book that ever mentions the character of Peter Pan, which is why it sparked my interest, but that ended up having very little effect on my enjoyment of the book. It's funny in a very light and innocent way; it's precious.

Most of the book is a very persuasive narrative against managing your own properties. I'm a stay at home Mom, looking to buy a small rental and manage it myself. I am very time-rich (a little bored at times!), so a lot of his arguments didn't apply to me. There's still some good information in there, so I didn't completely hate it. Also, I was really excited about the list of free property management forms that he says are available to download on his site. It's a SCAM. I signed up for it, and all it did was add me to the email list. No documents.

This brief book will introduce you to self-organization and risk management, but zoom into technical trading tools. We’ll cover indicators, several trading systems, setting profit targets and stops, and much more. What’s unique about this book is that all of its charts, tools, indicators, and systems have been programmed and are waiting for you at www.Stockcharts.com. If you have different software, you can still use this book because its concepts are universal. DO NOT buy this book if you are a paid-up member of StockCharts – they will give this book to you. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for trading software or have another package you like, this book is definitely for you. Most beginners jump into trading unprepared. Even if you already have some experience, you’ll find much that is useful and surprising in this book. On the other hand, if you’re already a professional trader, this may be too basic for you, and I’d refer you instead to my main book, The New Trading for a Living. Eugenics and Other Evils, by Gilbert Keith Chesterton

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton, (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) better known as G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. Born in Campden Hill in Kensington, London, he was baptized at the age of one month into the Church of England, though his family themselves were irregularly practising Unitarians. According to his autobiography, as a young man he became fascinated with the occult and, along with his brother Cecil, experimented with Ouija boards. He was educated at St Paul's School, then attended the Slade School of Art in order to become an illustrator. In 1896 he began working for the London publisher Redway, and T. Fisher Unwin, where he remained until 1902. During this period he also undertook his first journalistic work as a freelance art and literary critic. In 1902 the Daily News gave him a weekly opinion column, followed in 1905 by a weekly column in The Illustrated London News, for which he continued to write for the next thirty years. He was a large man, standing 6 feet 4 inches and weighing around 286 pounds. His girth gave rise to a famous anecdote. During the First World War a lady in London asked why he was not "out at the Front"; he replied, "If you go round to the side, you will see that I am." On another occasion he remarked to his friend George Bernard Shaw, "To look at you, anyone would think a famine had struck England". Shaw retorted, "To look at you, anyone would think you have caused it". P. G. Wodehouse once described a very loud crash as "a sound like Chesterton falling onto a sheet of tin" He died of congestive heart failure on the morning of 14 June 1936, at his home in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. His last known words were a greeting spoken to his wife. During his life, he wrote around 80 books, several hundred poems, some 200 short stories, 4000 essays, and several plays.

A Chilling Voice from the Past By Brad Shorr Eugenics was more than a pseudoscientific fad of the early 1900s: it provided much of the philosophical underpinnings of the Nazi master race and its logical culmination in the concentration camps. Today its ideas lurk more subtly behind such movements as birth control, abortion rights, euthanasia, and cloning. So, this book by GK is far more than an historical curiosity; the arguments he sets forth enable us to see far more clearly the dangers of conceding to a government, a group of elites, or even a vague movement, even a fraction of our rights and responsibilities concerning our own life, death, and progeneration. In the first third of the book, GK utterly dismantles the superficial logic of eugenics. In the second third, he exposes the real objectives of the movement that lay beneath the surface. The final third is a compilation of truly bone chilling articles and letters written by eugenicists of the period. Essentially, GK believes that the movement arose out of the capitalist desire to maintain cheap labor and the socialist desire to scientifically organize society. His analysis of these seemingly opposed forces has a heavy political, social, and historical focus, and is surprisingly light on religious considerations. He foresees that eugenics unleashed would result in an utterly inhuman society. Unfortunately the Nazis proved his theory. He foresees the dehumanizing effects of even a more moderate eugenics, which unfortunately has come to pass and is quite evident in the monstrous plight of our poor, homeless, mentally handicapped, and unborn. How do these social horrors occur? GK believes that most people are right, but dont know that they are right. Thus theywe--are susceptible and even defenseless to attacks by an organized group of activists driven by malevolent or merely foolish motives. This book shows how that actually played out in pre-WWII Europe, and gives us a better understanding of how it is happening now, and how we might reverse course.

Rocha I read this old and excellent book, here in Brazil.Writen by Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 - 14 June 1936), when the pseudo-science of eugenics was perhaps more popular is USA, than ecology is today, this book remains excellent and relevant. And this happens, more than 80 years after its publication. Then, eugenics was a thing supported by great american politicians, such as american Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Taft,Herbert Hoover, etc.Outside USA famous leaders such as the last Kaiser, Lenin, Stalin, etc. were eugenists.Famous scientists of this time, such as Thomas Alva Edison, Albert Einstein, Wright Brothers, Charles Lindenberg,Nicolas Tesla, etc. were eugenists.Writers such as H. G. Wells and Georger Bernard Shaw were eugenists and socialists. At first, this book was a work of courage. It was against the political, scientific and press stablishment. At second, this book is divided in parts:PART ONE: THE FALSE THEORY.PART TWO: THE REAL AIM.I really read another ediction of this excellent book, when I could read:"Most Eugenists are Euphemists. I mean merely that short words startle them, while long words soothe them. And they are utterly incapable of translating the one into the other, however obviously they mean the same thing. Say to them "The persuasive and even coercive powers of the citizen should enable him to make sure that the burden of longevity in the previous generations does not become disproportionate and intolerable, especially to the females?"; say this to them and they sway slightly to and fro like babies sent to sleep in cradles. Say to them "Murder your mother," and they sit up quite suddenly. Yet the two sentences, in cold logic, are exactly the same."In another page of this book, I read:"I am myself primarily opposed to Socialism, or Collectivism or Bolshevism or whatever we call it, for a primary reason not immediately involved here: the ideal of property. I say the ideal and not merely the idea; and this alone disposes of the moral mistake in the matter. It disposes of all the dreary doubts of the Anti-Socialists about men not yet being angels, and all the yet drearier hopes of the Socialists about men soon being supermen. I do not admit that private property is a concession to baseness and selfishness; I think it is a point of honour. I think it is the most truly popular of all points of honour. But this, though it has everything to do with my plea for a domestic dignity, has nothing to do with this passing summary of the situation of Socialism. I only remark in passing that it is vain for the more vulgar sort of Capitalists, sneering at ideals, to say to me that in order to hate Socialism "You must alter human nature." I answer "Yes. You must alter it for the worse."In the end of this book, there's a third part, with articles writen by eugenicists/eugenicists. Ironically, they were doomed by time, as false preachers. The ediction that I read wasn't this book, published by Dodo Press.Even so, my give my congratulation to all persons, publishing the works of this genius called Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 - 14 June 1936).

Even though I don't often read in either of those genres, I found it very entertaining, and look forward to reading more in the series.I read the free Kindle edition, ASIN B000JQV3Q0 with a publication date of November 1, 2005. No formatting issues that I noticed. The original edition apparently had illustrations, which are not included. However it's not clear whether illustrations are included in the Kindle versions you need to pay for, either. In fact, the description for at least one fairly expensive paper reprint edition states that illustrations are not included. Until a paid version with illustrations is available, I'm perfectly content with this freebie.

The characters are real and the story is innocent. B.M. Bower knew the characters she created and it shows.

The characters are appealing, the language is incredibly clean by today's standards, and there is much laugh-aloud humor. "Chip of the Flying U" is tremendous fun!

An inspiring collection of essays, in which Albert Einstein addresses the topics that fascinated him as a scientist, philosopher, and humanitarianDivided by subject matter—“Science,” “Convictions and Beliefs,” “Public Affairs,” etc.—these essays consider everything from the need for a “supranational” governing body to control war in the atomic age, to freedom in research and education, to Jewish history and Zionism, to explanations of the physics and scientific thought that brought him world recognition. Throughout, Einstein’s clear, eloquent voice presents an idealist’s vision and relays complex theories to the layperson. Einstein’s essays share his philosophical beliefs, scientific reasoning, and hopes for a brighter future, and show how one of the greatest minds of all time fully engaged with the changing world around him. This authorized Philosophical Library book features rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the Albert Einstein Archives at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Out of My Later Years: The Scientist, Philosopher, and Man Portrayed Through His Own Words, by Albert Einstein

Review “Ethical axioms are found and tested not very differently from the axioms of science. Truth is what stands the test of experience.” —Albert Einstein, “The Law of Science and the Laws of Ethics”

From the Inside Flap Albert Einstein, among the greatest scientists of all time, was also a man of profound thought and deeply humane feelings. His collected essays offer a fascinating and moving look at one of the twentieth century's leading minds.Covering a fifteen year period from 1934 to 1950, the contents of this book have been drawn from Einstein's articles, addresses, letters and assorted papers. Through his words, you can understand the man and gain his insight on social, religious, and educational issues.

About the Author Albert Einstein (1879–1955) was born in Germany and became an American citizen in 1940. A world-famous theoretical physicist, he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics and is renowned for his Theory of Relativity. In addition to his scientific work, Einstein was an influential humanist who spoke widely about politics, ethics, and social causes. After leaving Europe, Einstein taught at Princeton University. His theories were instrumental in shaping the atomic age.

Barton Out of my Later Years is a collection of Einstein's speeches and articles covering not just physics but his thoughts on the social condition of man, of Jews, and of war as well as several speeches about the likes of Max Planck, Mahatma Gandhi, and Marie Curie. As letters and speeches, these are written as the ordinary man that Einstein once was - very easy to read and understand. Even some of the physics lectures are understandable. Each is relatively short making this perfect for when you want to read something of substance but don't have much time. The sections on Public Affairs are especially haunting as Einstein presents his arguments for the "global village" and advocated someting akin to the current U.N. - things that began to come into their own after his passing. In particular, there is an interchange between him and a group of Communist scientists that underlines the Cold War tension in its height and is a chilling read now in the Post Soviet Union age.

The work has sections on 'Convictions and Beliefs' 'Science and Life' ' Public Affairs' ' Personalities' and 'His own people: The Jews"The work features expositions of some of Einstein's major scientific work.Among the personalities written about are Gandhi who Einstein greatly admires, Newton, Kepler, Planck, Madame Curie, Langevin, and lesser known figures Paul Ehrenfest,Carl von Ossietsky.Einstein writes much about the terrible changes in Germany he saw in his own lifetime, the rise of Nazism and Anti- Semitism. He writes about the creation of a national homeland for the Jews, his own Zionism, and his own connection with the Jewish people. He writes too about his conception of world- peace, about the threat to the world brought about something he is no small part a contributor to, the harnessing of the atom.In writing about himself in the opening section of the work he says, "I do the thing which my own nature drives me to do. It is embarassing to earn so much love and respect for it."He celebrates the life of thought , of the solitary individual .Einstein is the greatest modern example of Keynes dictum of how it is 'ideas' that change the world. He is the example of how one man alone , thinking, transformed our understanding of nature, and our power to change it.In these essays the main interests of Einstein's life are touched upon. He writes with clarity and modesty. An invaluable opportunity to be in touch with ' the Mind that defined an Age'.

A much better book than The world as I see it By Rough Customer Got this book and the book "the world as I see it" and this is the book to get, skip "the world as I see it" as it is full of scanning errors or typos, that interupt the text to the point of absurdity. This book is wonderful in either hardback or paperback (I have both) and will be something you can enjoy for years....I highly recommend this book to those who wish to understand Einsteins philsophical views on life and liberty.

Unique and poignant qualites make this one stand out By Heather Tiemens Throughout the course of his extremely successful career, Horatio Alger rarely deviated from his traditional framework for his stories - until this one. Adrift In New York tells the story of a girl, struggling against the offer of a bigamous marriage and subsequently cast out by her guardian, and a boy, who discovers for the first time in his life that there is more to life than stealing and dishonesty. It is a wonderfully moral, yet at the same time superbly entertaining story, and one worth paying any amount to read.

An animal Giraffeo(astro)naut and his friend go on an amazing, fun filled journey through our solar system and beyond By Ocean McIntyre As a science educator, I love this book for it's accurate science and portrait of our solar system and beyond. As a mother, I love this book for the cute characters, beautiful illustrations, the rhyme and rhythm of the story, as well as the over all "epic adventure" that it takes the reader and listener on.I've given this book as gifts and shared it with my family and friends, as well as with students. Even older kids and adults enjoy it. I have found it to be a terrific bedtime book, as well as a general book for pure enjoyment.Great for very young children as a book to listen to, and for early readers, as well. MC Longneck and his companion Sputnik take children on a grand, scenic tour of the planets and their moons, even giving an accurate image of Pluto based on the photos from the New Horizons mission. This is the first children's book I have ever found that even touches on light and the electromagnetic spectrum.I can't recommend this book highly enough.

While the illustrations are incredible and fit very well with the tone of the book, the content is where this book really outdoes every other book targeted towards the same age-group that I've ever seen. The content is serious, grounded in reality, and accurate, all the while being presented in a manner in which a child would be able to understand and stay engaged, making this book interesting and educational both for kids and adults. The quality of the book itself is outstanding -- the binding is sturdy, there are no typos, and the colors are vivid and accurate. All in all, it is an amazing book and a great choice for a gift!

A truly inspired educational tool bundled as a beautiful children's storybook By Andrés Ornelas My daughter is almost 2 years old and she is an amateur astronomer. Her first spoken sentence was "moon big ball" while admiring a full Moon and since then, I've been educating her (and myself) about the Solar System in any way I can.Naturally, I was very excited when I saw Andrew Rader's kickstarter campaign to publish this book and thrilled to see it live up to my high expectations! As you probably noticed already, it is visually stunning. The artwork is playful yet accurately conveys important characteristics of the planets and moons. On top of that, the story takes you through the Solar System in an engaging way while educating the reader on the unique properties of each destination. Although it's a relatively long book, my daughter can't have enough of it and we often read it several times in a row! Furthermore, some statements Rader makes are so intriguing that I found myself researching further after the first time I read it. It has the familiar rythm and ryhme of a children's book, yet it's serious about the science. As an educational bonus, the first letter of every page follows the alphabet. In short, I heartily recommend this book and hope to see Mc Longneck and Sputnik further explore the cosmos in future titles!

"[...]said, "but promise that you will try." She held her hand to him, and Tristrem raised it to his lips and kissed the wrist. "You might as well ask me to increase my stature," he answered. And presently he dropped the hand which he held and left the house. It was a perfect night. The moon hung like a yellow feather in the sky, and in the air was a balm that might have come from fields of tamaris and of thyme. The street itself was quiet, and as Tristrem walked on,[...]".

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a forgotten masterpiece By othoniaboys This novel from the 1880s was extravagantly admired by the pundit Benjamin De Casseres (died 1945), but as the pundit himself has become just as forgotten as Saltus, and since the pundit admitted that Saltus would never be popular, I am not holding my breath until the world agrees with the pundit. Saltus was a stylist first and foremost, a fact which, unless your name is Flaubert, is likely to destroy your reputation sooner than anything. I personally enjoy Saltus, just as some Roman emperors enjoyed peacock's tongues as a taste treat, but the public continues to prefer junk.

Good story, but lousy Kindle formatting By Jetpack This is a review of the free Kindle version. The story is a typical Holmes story, with the notable exception of a policeman who is actually comparable to Holmes in ability. Very unusual in the mythos, as even Gregory doesn't have the necessary imagination. If you like Holmes, I recommend this free download. The reason I drop it a star is the lousy Kindle formatting. The mutilation of the paragraphs is really inexcusable. This needs a good clean up badly. No reflection on Doyle, of course.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Don't Begin Your Holmes Reading With This One By CC Thomas This is a longer short story of Sherlock Holmes. It was actually written in a two-part series but can be read in one long sitting. I very much liked this story primarily because of the introduction of Inspector Baynes. Baynes is one of the only characters from the police force that matches Sherlock Holmes on investigative skills. It is different from other Holmes stories because the famous detective doesn't actually solve anything; rather, he just watches the falling out of the crime and follows Baynes's working of the case. Baynes is the only bright spot, though, in the story. You won't read it for the deductive skills and Baynes never appears in any of Doyle's other stories, sadly. Probably one for Holmes's fans and not a great introduction to the famous detective.

Wild Story, Little Deduction By Bubba_Holtzkopf Well, generally, readers of Sherlock Holmes are looking for some great detective work; the piecing together of a few scant clues to piece together a puzzle of a crime. This story, while wildly imaginative and unexpected, does little to build a tapestry of deduction and instead settles on mild suspense.***Spoiler Alert***The "Adventure" at Wisteria Lodge is a bizarre set of circumstances including not only a Voodoo side-track, but a despot exile as well! These inclusions certainly makes this Holme's tale stand out from the rest, although little else in the story would distinguish it. Hearing Holmes and others talk about "foreigners," a mulatto and "swarthy" people reveals the period prejudices quite clearly, and this detracted from my enjoyment of the story. What points the finger at the villain more clearly than saying that he is ugly, savage of temperment and creepy looking? In some cases, in this book, they turn natural prejudices against you, by revealing that the most savage looking person is not the killer, and this was good. This did little for the story, since it was pointed out by Holmes that this person wasn't likely to be the criminal, but it should be mentioned.Overall, Sherlock was fairly charming, as usual, but a guest dectective from the country was the star of the show. This is great, to break up the monotony of reading a lot of Holmes, but as a single story, it was disappointing. An interesting premise for a story, for sure, and if that is all you are looking for, you wont be disappointed. Compared to the other Sherlock Holmes stories, however, the Adventure at Wisteria Lodge ranks near the bottom of the list. The greatest sleuth of all time has never felt more "average."Entirely skippable.
