"[...]Germanics, on the west and the north, by the mightiest mountains in Europe, the Alps, which here enclose it in a vast concave rampart that stretches from the Mediterranean to the Adriatic. On the east it is contained by the sea. [Illustration: Sketch Map of northern Italy] The history of this vast country before the Roman Conquest is, as is history everywhere in the West before that event, vague and obscure. But this at least may be said: it was first in the occupation of the Etruscans, who in[...]".

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Pleasure to Read By darklight I found this to be a fascinating book, written with great style and enthusiasm. It was published in 1913, but it is still a pleasure to read. Edward Hutton's main contention is how the unusual physical location of Ravenna gave it unique advantages during the period at the end of the Roman Empire and how this made it so important at this time. He sees everything through the lens of the Catholic Church, but even as an atheist this didn't really bother me. It was a bit amusing however, to see that he gets as upset with the Arians (who had such a subtly different view of the Trinity than the Catholic Church that it's hard to grasp) as he does with straight-out pagans! Nevertheless, religion was very influential at the time, and his full-blooded partisanship does give a sense of how these emotions would have played out, as well as giving an interesting trajectory to the story. I really enjoyed the book, it opened my eyes to the importance of Ravenna in a way that an ordinary tourist guide book would never have done.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Focused study By Poetry lover The book offers a thorough account of the history of the city and then focuses in detail on its famous buildings and their astonishing inner decoration. A great preparation for a visit to Ravenna, especially if you are interested in art and its histories. A few color photographs, and it would have been perfect.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Written in 1913... By Diego Banducci which together with its academic tone, makes it a bit difficult to read. Still, the author is knowledgeable and the book short but complete.Another reviewer has commented that it would be nice to have color photos. I agree, but even better, there is a beautiful video titled "ravenna (italy) bizantine mosaics" available on YouTube. Fine photography with music to match. Although it is only five minutes long, it is well worth watching.Ravenna has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, and there is some useful information on their website. [...]

There was no particular reason why, after having left the Opera House, I should have retraced my steps and taken my place once more amongst the throng of people who stood about in the entresol, exchanging greetings and waiting for their carriages. A backward glance as I had been about to turn into the Place de l'Opera had arrested my somewhat hurried departure. The night was young, and where else was such a sight to be seen? Besides, was it not amongst some such throng as this that the end of my search might come?

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Paris and London Society, 1910, International Intrigue By Dharma Captain Austen Rotherby is on a mission of revenge in Paris. Standing outside of the Opera, he surveys the haute monde as they exit:"I took up my place just inside, close to one of the pillars, and, with an unlit cigarette still in my mouth, watched the flying chausseurs, the medley of vehicles outside, the soft flow of women in their white opera cloaks and jewels, who with their escorts came streaming down the stairs and out of the great building, to enter the waiting carriages and motor-cars drawn up in the privileged space within the enclosure, or stretching right down into the Boulevard. I stood there, watching them drive off one by one. I was borne a little nearer to the door by the rush of people, and I was able, in most cases, to hear the directions of the men as they followed their womankind into the waiting vehicles. In nearly every case their destination was one of the famous restaurants. Music begets hunger in most capitals, and the cafés of Paris are never so full as after a great night at the Opera. To-night there had been a wonderful performance. The flow of people down the stairs seemed interminable. Young women and old,--sleepy-looking beauties of the Southern type, whose dark eyes seemed half closed with a languor partly passionate, partly of pride; women of the truer French type,--brilliant, smiling, vivacious, mostly pale, seldom good-looking, always attractive. A few Germans, a fair sprinkling of Englishwomen, and a larger proportion still of Americans, whose women were the best dressed of the whole company. I was not sorry that I had returned. It was worth watching, this endless stream of varying types."One of those who he sees is the young Felicia Delora, accompanied by her uncle Maurice. Rotherby is accosted by Louis, the Maitre D'Hotel from the Milan Hotel in London. Bored, they go to an underworld nightclub, where Rotherby settles a score.Wheels upon wheels is the device of this novel. Back in London, Rotherby is enamored of Felicia, but her uncle disappears. Soon they are caught up in a plot to transfer armaments between foreign powers. Much of the action centers on the Milan Hotel (which is actually the Savoy, but so-named by Oppenheim in many of his novels).Crisp, compulsive, and wonderful descriptions of pre-war London and Paris.1910

"[...] Over the Green Store is a hall where formerly Adin Ballou used to preach his various gospels of Universalism, temperance, peace and abolition on Sunday afternoons following the morning services in his neighboring parish, the Hopedale Community. As my family was attached to the Baptist and Methodist persuasions I cannot now imagine what drew them to hear this famous reformer of society and religion. They must have attended in this hall, for although I cannot recall anything else, I do remember going to sleep there in the hot summer afternoons in my sister's lap. But any kind of a meeting was a temptation not to be resisted in that little community. Adin Ballou was in full sympathy with all the other reformers and transcendentalists of the Commonwealth, and when I search myself for an explanation[...]".

"[...]He stared straight at the dull red disk of the sun, and spat with eloquence. Then he wiped the sweat from his forehead, and scratched a place where the prickly heat was bothering him. Next, he buttoned up his tunic, and brushed it down neatly and precisely. There was official business to be done, and a man did that with due formality, heat or no heat. "Guard, turn out!" he ordered. Twelve men filed out, one behind the other, from the hut that he had left. They seemed to feel the heat more than Brown did, as they fell in line before Brown's sword. There was no flag, and no flag-pole in that nameless health-resort, so the sword, without its scabbard, was doing duty, point downward in the ground, as a totem-pole of Empire. Brown had stuck it there, like Boanerges' boots, and there it stayed from sunrise until sunset, to be displaced by whoever dared to do it, at his peril.[...]".

Review

When one recollects that until the appearance of the the common people had almost no other reading matter except the Bible and Fox's Book of Martyrs, we can understand the deep impression that this book produced

- James Miller Dodds, English Prose.

From the Back Cover This is a book that will never die--one of the great Christian classics. Written with passion and tenderness, it tells the dramatic, true stories of men, women, and children who, in the face of indescribable persecution, gave their lives for the sake of Christ. Covering the broad sweep of church history from the early church to the beginning of American foreign missions in the early 1800s, Fox's Book of Martyrs continues to inspire and strengthen countless Christians with a vision of faith that, both in life and in death, commits itself utterly to the Lord of Life. Presented here in its most complete form, this book brings to life days when 'a noble army, men and boys, the matron and the maid . . . climbed the steep ascent of heaven amid peril, toil, and pain.'

About the Author John Foxe (1516-87) was a professor at Oxford, then a minister in London before being forced to flee to Europe when Queen Mary came to power. While in Europe he wrote this classic and published it after returning to England when Queen Elizabeth took the throne.

I was happy to find it now because the available paperback versions I have seen are very different. Amazon.com is my favorite place to shop because I always find what I am looking for and at a good price also.

It stands to reason that if He remains unchanging, then the faith He bestows on believers is the same as that of the early Christians. What was most educational and humbly to me as I read this work is that the early Christians did not attempt to pass laws that would make their society more comfortable for them, but gladly shared in the suffering of Christ, their only concern being to share His Gospel. Jesus did not command us to make life comfortable for ourselves, but to preach His Gospel in season and out of season. If you, as I have, find that difficult, this book, coupled with Scripture, will open your eyes to the need and give your heart courage and embolden your faith.

38 of 47 people found the following review helpful. An outstanding work. By honest critique I am niether Catholic or Protestant as in my own experience I have been persecuted myself by both "Christian" movements for what I chose to believe.I found Fox's book facinating not because it upheld one set of dogma against another but because there are some quite sustainable facts. I decided to examine one entry in great detail, because I happen to live 2 minutes away from where the martyrdom is said to have taken place.(Joan Waste who was burned at the stake in Derby)What makes this account different to most others is because she was only 22 and blind and made her stand against Catholic teaching of "Transubstantiation" based on what she had had read to her from the Bible itself. Her story is substatiated from other local sources and interlocks with known local history.Truly a fine example ,( not of upholding protestantisim ) but of upholding true Bible doctrine.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good investment By JB I have been looking for a good binary options strategy and I have found it with this title. The author tells you which indicators to use and gives many examples of how to use this strategy. It's a really good strategy for the sideways market but you will need to be patient as the indicators can take a while before lining up. Also I had some questions and emailed the author and he kindly replied within a short space of time. All in all this book is a good investment.

  • My Story

After college, I did what you’re supposed to do: I got a job. The problem was almost immediately I found myself looking for a way out. It wasn’t that I hated the work or my coworkers, but it just wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. The thought of spending my next 30 years there was terrifying. So evenings and weekends I turned my attention online. I’d been dabbling with building rudimentary websites, learning online advertising channels, and even running my own small marketing campaigns for other company’s products to test the waters. And that’s what The Side Hustle Path is about; finding a low-risk way make more money. If you’re looking for a get-rich-quick-scheme or the secret to overnight success, you won’t find it here. But what you will find are 10 down-to-earth entrepreneurs who were once sitting in your same position. They felt the same fears and uncertainties, but took action anyway.

In these ever-changing times, I think it is incredibly important that we start to look for new ways of earning income besides the traditional 9 to 5 job. A "side hustle" is the perfect way to try out new endeavours without losing your primary source of income.I love the author's enthusiasm about this subject. The book is very well organized and describes different types of money making ideas, how they work, how to get started and gives examples and tips. It's a very good introduction. I also liked the fact that this book provided a bit of education on these topics. Some of the ideas are selling on Craigslist, selling on Amazon in bulk, ride-sharing, house-sharing, real estate sales and even becoming an online teacher. My opinion is that some of these side hustles involve some personal risks and also will take a lot of time, effort, and a capital investment. I'm not convinced that you can be successful without making this a full-time job, at least in the beginning. Some of the entrepreneurs mentioned seem a little questionable as to their success. I would check this out carefully before investing money in the idea. With that being said, I believe some of these ideas could help readers find a new source of income.

It is just a rewrite of stuff done by others already posted online. The author even includes links to the many of the original sites. If you need help signing up to be an Uber or Lyft driver, or an airbnb host, maybe this book is for you. The rest of the book is thin on content and ideas.

He does a great job of not only talking about what is possible, but giving real life examples of how it is being done today. You can't go wrong with any of the 10 paths. Pick the one that appeals to you and take action today!

Many of us want to increase our self-sufficiency, but few have access to the ideal five sunny, gently sloping acres of rich, loamy, well-drained soil. Jenni Blackmore presents a highly entertaining, personal account of how permaculture can be practiced in adverse conditions, allowing anyone to learn to live more sustainably in a less-than-perfect world. With a rallying cry of "If we can do it, you can too," she distills the wisdom of twenty years of trial and error into a valuable teaching tool.

The perfect antidote to dense, high-level technical manuals, Permaculture for the Rest of Us presents the fundamental principles of this sometimes confusing concept in a humorous, reader-friendly way. Each chapter focuses on a specific method or technique, interspersing straightforward explanations with the author's own experiences. Learn how to successfully retrofit even the smallest homestead using skills such as:

No-till vs. till gardening, composting, and soil-building Natural pest control and integrating small livestock Basic greenhouse construction Harvesting, preservation, and more

Ideal for urban dreamers, suburbanites and country-dwellers alike, this inspirational and instructional "encouragement manual" is packed with vibrant photographs documenting the author's journey from adversity to abundance.

Jenni Blackmore is a farmer, artist, writer and certified Permaculture Design Consultant who built her house on a rocky, windswept island off the coast of Nova Scotia almost twenty-five years ago and has been stumbling along the road to self-sufficient living ever since. A successful micro-farmer, she produces most of her family's meat, eggs, fruit, and vegetables, in spite of often-challenging conditions.

Permaculture for the Rest of Us: Abundant Living on Less than an Acre, by Jenni Blackmore

    Review Publishers Weekly, October 2015

(Blackmore's) book is both a manual and a memoir, using her experiences as a springboard to explain permaculture how-tos and how-not-tos. Blackmore's take on permaculture, the concepts of which were developed in Australia, is decidedly Northern. Anyone envying typical descriptions of lush, fertile land and perfect climates will be heartened by Blackmore's story. She discusses vegetable timetables, ways to create different growing conditions, keeping weeds at bay, dirt building, heat and cold tolerance of plants, greenhouses, "lasagna gardening," and more. She also imparts her knowledge on raising chickens, turkeys, ducks, and rabbits. Her advice is perfect for the beginning and aspiring permaculturist: non-threatening, clear, and told from a charming personal perspective.

Permaculture is personal journey to a more sustainable, earth regenerating lifestyle. In Permaculture for the Rest of Us, Jenni Blackmore skillfully weaves a thorough explanation of permaculture principles and practices into her own story of returning to the land. With wit and charm she draws on her experiences homesteading in a challenging climate. She deftly illustrates how she and her family have truly created abundance while embracing the natural world around them. The result is a wealth of information, advice and inspiration.---Darrell Frey, Author of Bioshelter Market Garden: A Permaculture Farm

Self-reliance is a choice today, and a difficult one, but it won't be a choice in the future. Jenni Blackmore writes with heart about her family's crawl toward living in harmony with nature. Sharing her hard-won lessons in permaculture with verve and intimate warmth, the author reveals the human side of building a new way of life: food, seeds, animals, weather and setbacks. Genuine, pithy, and filled with practical tips to encourage and guide the reader, the book also expands our knowledge of coastal ecosystems.---Peter Bane, author, The Permaculture Handbook: Garden Farming for Town and Country and publisher, Permaculture Activist magazine

A welcome breath of fresh air, Jenni Blackmore's Permaculture for the Rest of Us is exactly what the title suggests: an enthusiastic, user-friendly guide to ecologically sensitive homesteading, using permaculture principles, for those who don't happen to have the money and opportunity to buy five or ten acres of perfect farmland. For those who want to grow their own food without pesticides or the other problematic features of industrial agriculture -- and these days, it's hard to think of a more useful step toward personal sustainability -- this is an excellent guide.-- John Michael Greer, author, Green Wizardry: Conservation, Solar Power, Organic Gardening, and Other Hands-On Skills from the Appropriate Tech Toolkit

As Canadians change their approach to the garden, Jenni Blackmore is leading the way. It is not that nature has changed but our attitude towards her is. Blackmore shows us how to embrace the lead that nature provides us with, in an approach that is as much storytelling as it is a guide to self-sufficiency.I am not sure if this book is more useful in the magazine rack, next to the almanac where I can pick it up and gather some nuggets of knowledge that will make me a better gardener, or next to my fat, cushioned reading chair where I enjoy a good story. We need a special category for this book.---Mark Cullen markcullen.com

For most, permaculture can seem like a complex philosophy too daunting to make part of our everyday reality. In Permaculture for the Rest of Us, Jenni Blackmore masterfully distills the concepts and principles of permaculture in such a way that the reader is convinced to put theory into practice. Both optimistic and realistic, Permaculture for the Rest of Us is a rare combination that provides both the how and why of creating a simpler life while fostering a deeper connection with nature, with the Earth, and with each other.---Av Singh, Just Us! I am currently going to school to earn my permaculture design certificate. At the moment, I am deeply buried in zones and sectors, which are amazing, and yet overwhelming concepts. Jenni's book is the first of its' kind. It is lighthearted and informative and yet presents the concept of permaculture in a way that will be interesting to permaculture novices and experts alike. I will be recommending this book to my classmates and buying more copies as gifts.

Ebook PDF Starlight, Starbright: Are Stars Conscious?, by Gregory L. Matloff, C. Bangs

The only thing we can be absolutely sure of is our own consciousness. But what is consciousness? Is it a property that is unique to humans or do we share it with other life-forms? Or is the philosophical doctrine of panpsychism correct-are stars and the entire Universe conscious in some sense? Early chapters in this book examine the prehistory, mythology, and history of this topic. Arguments are presented from the viewpoints of shamans, philosophers, poets, quantum physicists, and novelists. A simple "toy" model of panpsychism is then presented, in which a universal field of proto-consciousness interacts with molecular bonds via the vacuum fluctuation pressure of the Casimir effect. It is shown how this model is in congruence with an anomaly in stellar motions called "Parenago's discontinuity." Cool, redder, less massive stars such as the Sun apparently circle the center of the galaxy faster than their hotter, bluer, more massive sisters. This discontinuity occurs at the point in the stellar distribution where molecules begin to appear in stellar spectra. Observations of main sequence stars out to ~260 light years and giant stars out to >1,000 light years using the ESA Hipparcos space observatory support the reality and nonlocality of Parenago's discontinuity. Local, more conventional explanations for this phenomena are not supported by observations of other galaxies and spiral arms of the Milky Way. If position and kinematics data for ~1 billion stars currently being obtained by the new ESA Gaia space observatory demonstrate that Parenago's discontinuity is a galaxy-wide phenomenon, the hypothesis that anomalistic star motion is due to stellar volition, as described by philosopher/author Olaf Stapledon in his classic novel Star Maker, will be strengthened, as previously discussed by the author in the peer-reviewed journal JBIS.

Why Should I Care About Alfred Adler? In this short companion piece to Allan Cox's book, The CEO in You, you'll get a taste of whether or not you want to engage in a truly unique form of personal exploration. Cox has taken the central concept of Alfred Adler--the pioneer-founder of Individual Psychology--and molded it over a period of 30 years to the benefit of many CEOs, top executive teams and their companies. Adler, by the way, along with Freud and Jung, make up the "Holy Trinity" of modern psychology. You've heard about the inferiority complex and birth order. These are just two insights from Adler. In this companion piece and the larger book, too, Cox focuses on Adler's work of pure genius, The Style of Life. It's a wakeup call, no matter what your world's walk.* Without realizing it, you are likely to be on a life course that is either a looming threat that leads to failure or a guardian presence that assures you of a meaningful and contributing life.* You'll often see these life choices clearly in others but not so well in yourself.* Which is it for you, easing your way through the life's transitions or taking wrong turns that set you up for missed opportunities?

By Afia Adler's work is forward-looking, and that's what Allan Cox communicates. We can still change; we are always capable of change.Central to what Adler's work can do for us is the concept of "Style of Life." Through introspection and over a period of time we can each find out what it really is that pulls us forward. That's our central goal and it's what attracts us. This is unique for each person and there's no right answer.Adler's simple framework provides the tools to find out of Style of Life and how to get back on track whenever we knock ourselves off that path. Cox makes this concept easy to understand and it can be applied immediately in one's life.

I finally made the connection reading Why Should I Care about Alfred Adler? Adler's brilliance is embodied in the simplicity of his concepts and tools. However, Adler does not provide the 10 step approach to better understanding. Easy answers are not included.Allan Cox makes the complex accessible and usable. Cox has the gift of interpreting the concepts and providing us with guidance on the journey of self discovery.

As I did so, I noticed three letters on the table,—one in a long blue envelope suggestive of either a summons or a returned manuscript,—one bearing the Melbourne postmark, and the third a thick square missive coroneted in red and gold at the back. I turned over all three indifferently, and selecting the one from Australia, balanced it in my hand a[...]".

The Sorrows of Satan, by Marie Corelli

From the Publisher The Valancourt Books edition includes the unabridged text of the first edition as well as a new introduction and notes by Julia Kuehn and an appendix containing rare contemporary reviews of Corelli's works.

From the Back Cover London, 1895, and the Devil is on the loose. He is searching for someone morally strong enough to resist temptation, but there seems little chance he will succeed. Britain is all but totally corrupt. The aristocracy is financially and spiritually bankrupt; church leaders no longer believe in God; Victorian idealism has been banished from literature and life; and sexual morality is being undermined by the pernicious doctrines of the 'New Woman'. Everything and everyone is up for sale, and it takes a special kind of moral courage to resist the Devil's seductions.

About the Author Marie Corelli, pseudonym of Mary Mackay (born 1855, London, Eng.—died April 21, 1924, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick), best-selling English author of more than 20 romantic melodramatic novels. Her first book, A Romance of Two Worlds (1886), dealt with psychic experience—a theme in many of her later novels. Her first major success was Barabbas: A Dream of the World’s Tragedy (1893), in which her treatment of the Crucifixion was designed to appeal to popular taste. The Sorrows of Satan (1895), also based on a melodramatic treatment of a religious theme, had an even wider vogue. Throughout her immensely successful career, she was accused of sentimentality and poor taste. Later in life she played an at times controversial role in efforts to preserve historic buildings in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Satan's Sorrow was my joy By Jason Hardware A beautifully eloquent book which sadly demonstrates the decline in the expressiveness of modern language. I was gripped from the first chapter onwards and felt empathy and emotion as to the plight of the main characters. The devil is wonderfully described and I feel as if I know him all too well. He passes such sublime insights into theological debate that it sets the mind spinning. It is a cleverly described work of fiction which tends to polarise one's opinion towards religion and the general inhumanity of mankind. What struck me was that the description of "jaded youth", of selfish and "sensual egotism" in the late 1800's was equally applicable in the new Millennium. After reading it I found myself less likely to bemoan daily trivial problems and more likely to appreciate the simpler beauty of nature around me.

By A Customer That the Devil himself could have sorrows of his own is a concept that many poets and writers have expressed, but none of them can surpass Marie Corelli's attempt. The book describes the life of one Geoffery Tempest,a struggling writer who half unknowingly lets the Devil take charge of his affairs. He becomes a millionaire overnight, then publishes his book, gets married to a beautiful lady and still does not find any solace. The book describes the devil's plight in moving detail ,and you really feel sorry for the Fallen Angel ,who loves the Lord much more than petty humans.A must-read for discerning lovers of good writing.

Sorrows of Satan by Marrie Corelli By Pryse Ezekwesili This novel is a MUST READ for every one that really appreciates what a novel in all its ramifications is. It happens to be the first novel I have read from cover to cover in twenty-four hours. It is so gripping that you can not do any other thing than turning over the pages to know what happens next. Readers should be warned that if they have any other thing to do in a day, they should not borther opening even the first page.

It could have been written today regarding anything that consumes the time and money of a family member.

Long, long ago, after Uther Pendragon died, there was no King in Britain, and every Knight hoped to seize the crown for himself. The country was like to fare ill when laws were broken on every side, and the corn which was to give the poor bread was trodden underfoot, and there was none to bring the evildoer to justice. Then, when things were at their worst, came forth Merlin the magician, and fast he rode to the place where the Archbishop of Canterbury had his dwelling. And they took counsel together, and agreed that all the lords and gentlemen of Britain should ride to London and meet on Christmas Day, now at hand, in the Great Church. So this was done. And on Christmas morning, as they left the church, they saw in the churchyard a large stone, and on it a bar of steel, and in the steel a naked sword was held, and about it was written in letters of gold, 'Whoso pulleth out this sword is by right of birth King of England.' They marvelled at these words, and called for the Archbishop, and brought him into the place where the stone stood. Then those Knights who fain would be King could not hold themselves back, and they tugged at the sword with all their might; but it never stirred. The Archbishop watched them in silence, but when they were faint from pulling he spoke: 'The man is not here who shall lift out that sword, nor do I know where to find him. But this is my counsel—that two Knights be chosen, good and true men, to keep guard over the sword.'

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. tedious and unintentionally long By David W. Nicholas Some books age well, and others poorly. Cervantes, for example, wrote Don Quixote 500 years or so ago, and it holds up pretty well. This current book was only written a little less than 200 ago...but it holds up much less well. The story, near as I could tell, revolves around several people who are opposed to the Emperor Napoleon at the start of his reign. A good half, or better, of the story is background to the action, and once it begins the characters are confusing and the plot doesn't make much sense either. Various policemen and officials of the Emperor's government intervene to stop the traitors from further undermining Napoleon's government. This book is rather long. Some of the paragraphs seem to go on forever, conversations wander endlessly and then peter out inconclusively, characters act unreasonably, the story just wanders along without guidance seemingly. Parts are a bit interesting, and I'm sure at one point this was the best suspense novel around; but nowadays it's pretty thin fare.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A LITTLE TOUCH OF ZE FRENCH By Carol S Meade I chose this because of the author. I feel that the translation is a little clumsy (of course, I could not do it at all), the the plot is interesting and overall, it is an good read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Complicated, Very Interesting Historically By Elizabeth I found the book very interesting and it prompted further reading on the French Revolution and the post-revolution and restoration periods. Without this some of Balzac's outstanding characterization and plot elements are hard to understand.

"[...]CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTORY, CONCERNING THE PEDIGREE OF THE CHUZZLEWIT FAMILY As no lady or gentleman, with any claims to polite breeding, can possibly sympathize with the Chuzzlewit Family without being first assured of the extreme antiquity of the race, it is a great satisfaction to know that it undoubtedly descended in a direct line from Adam and Eve; and was, in the very earliest times, closely connected with the agricultural interest. If it should ever be urged by grudging and malicious persons, that a Chuzzlewit, in any period of the family history, displayed an overweening amount of family pride, surely the weakness will be considered not only pardonable but laudable, when the immense superiority of the house to the rest of mankind, in respect of this its ancient origin, is taken into account.[...]".

From the Inside Flap At The Center of Martin Chuzzlewit -- the novel Angus Wilson called "one of the most sheerly exciting of all Dickens stories" -- is Martin himself, very old, very rich, very much on his guard. What he suspects (with good reason) is that every one of Iris close and distant relations. now converging in droves on the country inn where they believe he is dying, will stop at nothing to become the inheritor of Iris great fortune. Having unjustly disinherited Iris grandson, young Martin, the old fellow now trusts no one but Mary Graham, the pretty girl hired as Iris companion. Though she has been made to understand she will not inherit a penny, she remains old Chuzzlewit's only ally. As the viperish relations and hangers-on close in on him, we meet some of Dickens's most marvelous characters -- among them Mr. Pecksniff (whose name has entered the language as a synonym for ultimate hypocrisy and self-importance); the fabulously evil Jonas Chuzzlewit; the strutting reptile Tigg Montague; and the ridiculous, terrible, comical Sairey Gamp. Reluctantly heading for America in search of opportunity, the penniless young Martin goes west, rides a riverboat, and is overtaken by bad company and mortal danger -- while the battle for his grandfather's gold reveals new depths of family treachery, cunning, and ruthlessness. And in scene after wonderful scene of conflict and suspense, of high excitement and fierce and hilarious satire, Dickens's huge saga of greed versus decency comes to its magnificent climax.

57 of 60 people found the following review helpful. A Major Milestone for Dickens By Thaddeus Wert With this novel, Dickens left behind the shallow characters that sometimes marred his early works, and developed full-fledged people. Pecksniff and his daughters are marvelous creations that make one cringe with embarassment while laughing at their incredible selfishness. Tom Pinch is another character in a distinguished line of "too good to be true" Dickensian personalities, but he is shown to suffer and grow into a believable human being. The American episodes are biting in their satire, but overall they are on the money. Dickens' contempt for American armchair philosophers and "freedom-loving" slave owners fueled some of his most pointed social commentary. As always, there is a happy ending, but the plot is more complex than anything Dickens had written before. I have read Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiousity Shop, and Barnaby Rudge, and Martin Chuzzlewit ranks right up there with his best.

38 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Martin Chuzzlewit is funny, memorable, and insightful. By Kenneth Umbach Martin Chuzzlewit is a funny, memorable, and insightful book. The engravings in the Oxford Illustrated edition are a charming addition to this story of hypocrisy, family intrigue, selfishness, loyalty, and friendship. Dickens's use of language is precise and often stinging. The book is laced with humor in the service of more profound goals. If you buy the Oxford Illustrated edition, skip the critical essay at the start of the volume, as it gives away some plot elements best left for the reader to discover. (Read the essay AFTER you have finished the book, if you like, or just ignore it.) My 9 rating reflects the combination of humor, satire, memorable characters (most especially the resolutely jolly Mark Tapley and the hypocritical Mr. Pecksniff), and a thoroughly entertaining plot.

18 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Great Cathartic Read for problems with $ and Family By Ted Martin Chuzzlewit the elder is dying and all the family has designs on gaining their inheritance. His grandson seems the odds on favorite but young Martin, the grandson has fallen madly in love with the elder Martin's altruistic nurse, Mary Graham. Why the elder Martin finds this terrifying is puzzling. Does he really think Mary's interest in Martin the younger will compromise the quality of her job? Oh, oh...I've done it, I've caught Dickens capturing the foibles of humanity again!!! These characters sometimes make me scream. I'd like to be face to face with them, vigourously attempting to argue them out of their other-destructive behavior...Of course it would be totally useless as far as they're concerned, but hopefully cathartic for me. The PBS video (6 hours) is how I was introduced to this story. After viewing the video I read the book. Dickens offers a marked contrast to his near contemporary Alexis deTocqueville's. Where Tocqueville saw free association and high community spirit in his Democracy in America, Dickens saw flim-flam and greed everywhere. -As greed and selfishness are big themes in Chuzzlewit, America proved an apt foil. It is said American publishers pirated Dickens work, paying him no royalties, adding fuel to his ire. Other reviewers have commented on Pecksniff , Mrs. Gump, Jonas Chuzzlewit and Tom Pinch. Oh, there are Dickensian characters in this book. The rivalry between Mercy and Charity Pecksniff results in this case, in alarming tragedies of self-centeredness. If there be humor in such goings on, you'll love Montigue Tigg (Tigg Montigue). He is every bit the operator, having much in common with Mr. Merdle of Dicken's Little Dorritt. Rest assured, as Dickens torments the reader with the trials of his characters, this is one of those tales where just desserts are served in the end.
