Alfred Wegener aimed to create a revolution in science which would rank with those of Nicolaus Copernicus and Charles Darwin. After completing his doctoral studies in astronomy at the University of Berlin, Wegener found himself drawn not to observatory science but to rugged fieldwork, which allowed him to cross into a variety of disciplines. The author of the theory of continental drift―the direct ancestor of the modern theory of plate tectonics and one of the key scientific concepts of the past century―Wegener also made major contributions to geology, geophysics, astronomy, geodesy, atmospheric physics, meteorology, and glaciology. Remarkably, he completed this pathbreaking work while grappling variously with financial difficulty, war, economic depression, scientific isolation, illness, and injury. He ultimately died of overexertion on a journey to probe the Greenland icecap and calculate its rate of drift.

This landmark biography―the only complete account of the scientist’s fascinating life and work―is the culmination of more than twenty years of intensive research. In Alfred Wegener, Mott T. Greene places Wegener’s upbringing and theoretical advances in earth science in the context of his brilliantly eclectic career, bringing Wegener to life by analyzing his published scientific work, delving into all of his surviving letters and journals, and tracing both his passionate commitment to science and his thrilling experiences as a polar explorer, a military officer during World War I, and a world-record–setting balloonist.

In the course of writing this book, Greene traveled to every place that Alfred Wegener lived and worked―to Berlin, rural Brandenburg, Marburg, Hamburg, and Heidelberg in Germany; to Innsbruck and Graz in Austria; and onto the Greenland icecap. He also pored over archives in Copenhagen, Munich, Marburg, Graz, and Bremerhaven, where the majority of Wegener’s surviving papers are found.

Written with great immediacy and descriptive power, Alfred Wegener is a powerful portrait of the scientist who pioneered the modern concept of unified Earth science. The book should be of interest not only to earth scientists, students of polar travel and exploration, and historians but to all readers who are fascinated by the great minds of science.

Alfred Wegener: Science, Exploration, and the Theory of Continental Drift, by Mott T. Greene

Review

The definitive biography of Alfred Wegener―and a great read.

(Naomi Oreskes, Harvard University, author of Plate Tectonics: An Insider's History of the Modern Theory of the Earth and coauthor of The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future)

A remarkably detailed and wonderfully well-written biography of Alfred Wegener... Includes insight into what makes a person such as Wegener a genius―what it was about him that led to an ability to create such a novel and correct view of nature.  That is the true value of this exceptional book, to be able to feel as though one can literally experience the scientific genius that was Alfred Wegener.

(Choice)

Twenty-five years in the making, Greene's terrific biography of Wegener has absolutely no competition: it is a giant leap forward in our knowledge of Wegener's views and life. Readers will be immediately drawn into Wegener's life by the fresh, direct, and accessible writing. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of earth science, meteorology, aerology, atmospheric physics, and twentieth-century science.

(Henry R. Frankel, University of Missouri–Kansas City, author of The Continental Drift Controversy)

A magnificent, definitive, and indefatigable tribute to an indefatigable man... Greene beautifully puts the record straight with a portrait of Wegener as a respected 'cosmic physicist.'

(Nature)

In this book Mott Greene has ably explained every detail of Wegener’s ideas and research and has created a well-deserved tribute to one of the most creative and energetic scientists of the twentieth century.

(Metascience)

That is the true value of this exceptional book, to be able to feel as though one can literally experience the scientific genius that was Alfred Wegener. Essential.

By GISmom Excellent book! In my geology classes, I learned that one day Alfred Wegener decided that the continents had drifted to their current positions, published this theory, and was laughed out of the scientific community because he did not have a mechanism for the process. There was a LOT more to the story than that, and this definitive volume explores that "more". The book traces his education, professional work and credentials, and explores his approach to scientific investigations not only in geography but also in meteorology and climatology, as well has his integration of data through his research to support continental drift. This book is NOT light reading, but for those who are interested in intellectual explorers who have made major discoveries in science, this is a very important work. The greatest value to me is how it shows the scientific process - compiling evidence, finding a theory which unites the evidence, obtaining more evidence, refining the theory....Highly recommended.

By DAlton This is an exceptionally well written biography of a little know but important scientist and explorer. Dr. Greene adds a comprehensive review of the state of the scientific fields at the time, the key players and their interactions with Wegener. Twenty five years of work were not wasted as this is a compelling and informative review of a man's life, work and times.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An exceptional account By Frank Jahn ‘Alfred Wegener’ covers much more than the life of this extraordinary scientist and his development of the ‘Continental Drift’ hypothesis: Greene brings to life the early 20th century environment of natural sciences and scientists in Germany and the repercussions of WWI on the science community. Wegener’s academic development, his many and varied scientific interests and his prolific publications are explored and analysed in great detail. In some chapters, the detail will appear excessive to the average reader. The book also reminds us of the hardships explorers were exposed to and the risks inherent in exploring remote areas like Greenland at the time. One is awed by what was achieved with minimum support, no communication and primitive means of transport such as dog and pony sleds. In the course of over 20 years, Greene has created an admirably exhaustive and yet entertaining account of Alfred Wegener’s remarkable life and personality.

This fantastic tale was penned in 1897 by one of the classic authors of the adventure novel, Jules Verne. It was written as a response to Edgar Allen Poe's 1838 work 'The Narrative of Gordon Pym' and is set 11 years after the events in that story. The tale follows the narrator's journey from the Kerguelen Islands back to the USA after an expedition of private study into the wildlife of the islands. The journey, however, is fraught with mystery when they encounter a stray iceberg with a dead body on it. This is a great piece of fiction by a master of the genre; a must read for all fans of Verne's work. This classic novel is being republished with a specially commissioned introductory biography of the author to help the reader place the tale in context of his other works.

Poe's "The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym" was a true story. In "An Antarctic Mystery" a ship is searching for survivors of Pym's voyage. There was one problem with the Kindle version: "Quotation marks" were replaced with ???three question marks??? at each end of a quotation. This is a bit distracting. Other than that I liked the book.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great book - too many errors By e2ipiand1 The number of misspelled and missing words in this book make it very hard to read at times.I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will try to find a better copy.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Issues with digitizing. By Raymond E. Keeler When they digitized this book, the double quotation marks ("), apostrophes ('), ellipses (...), and degree symbols (°) were all replaced by one or more question marks. As a result, it was sometime difficult to read. Moreover, there are numerous optical character recognition (OCR) errors that were introduced during the digitizing process. These seem to get more numerous the further you get into the book. But the story is great and the price can't be beat.

Cosmos: The Infographic Book of Space, by Stuart Lowe, Chris North

Review

"Science-fiction readers also tend to marvel at space and astronomy. Cosmos: The Infographic Book of Space by Stuart Lowe and Chris North is a guilty pleasure of space-related facts presented with minimalistic graphic images and charts that bring out interesting facts details. Topics include space exploration, the solar system, stars, galaxies, and other worlds. 'Tis the season for giving. Make a geek happy!" - Kirkus

"An enjoyable and informative read that will appeal to anyone with an interest in the cosmos or for those who appreciate the astonishing." - Library Journal

"In Cosmos: The Infographic Book of Space, by Stuart Lowe and Chris North, simple-looking line drawings encode a vast amount of information about everything from telescopes to the 30,000 nearest galaxies. Each graphic occupies all the available area on every two-page spread. Although the graphics are organized by topic, I was often surprised as I turned from one page to the next. One page shows relative sizes of planets and moons; the next, an enormous chart summarizing future lunar and solar eclipses through 2050; the next, an amusing comparison of the solar system's top ten tallest mountains, biggest lakes, longest channels, and largest craters; the next, scale comparisons of the interior structures of the 14 largest worlds orbiting the Sun. (I had no idea that Loki Patera's lake of lava is the same size as Lakes Baikal and Tanganyika. Yikes.) It's the kind of book that you can pick up and turn to any page and enjoy what you find, but you have to read it cover to cover to be delighted by each and every page." - The Planetary Society

About the Author

DR STUART LOWE has previously worked at Jodrell Bank Observatory where he helped build astronomical instruments used on radio telescopes in the UK and Poland. At the University of Manchester, he worked on the European Space Agency's Planck satellite, which was launched in 2009 to look at the echoes of the Big Bang. He co-founded the UK's longest running, regular, astronomy podcast - The Jodcast. More recently he has built web-interfaces that allow everyone, from professional astronomers to school children, to observe with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope network.

DR CHRIS NORTH is an astrophysicist at Cardiff University. Having worked on a number of experiments and space missions, he is currently part of the Herschel Space Observatory team, looking at far-infrared light from star forming in our galaxy and across the Universe. As well as research, Chris is heavily involved in outreach engagement at Cardiff, speaking to teachers, schools, and anyone else who'll listen about space and astronomy. He has made regular appearances on BBC Sky at Night for a number of years.

Chris and Stuart first met whilst working on the Planck satellite. This led to the development of the popular chromoscope.net project, which allowed people to view the Universe in a whole new light. Their partnership has included websites that enable people to track the lifecycle of stars, design their very own space telescope, and even play with the properties of the cosmos. They can often be found looking for new ways to help people understand the Universe we live in.

It has held my space-obsessed 5 year old's attention since he received it at Christmas. He loves to pour over the details.. highest, longest, farthest, etc. Great book!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Huge quantity of data compressed into innumerable, dense graphics By J. S. Radford I am not sure exactly what one does with all the charts, each overflowing with data presented in cleanly, clearly achieved charts but SO full of info as to defy understanding. The authors/graphic artists have rendered an amazing amount of information graphically. There was so much information, I was overwhelmed. I just skimmed through the entire book and then returned it to the library (did not actually buy).Perhaps this is a reference resource? Not sure how it is to be used that way, though. One thing that stood out to me strongly was that patterns in the universe are anything but clear! I had not really known much about what astronomers and cosmologists really see and have to decipher. That understanding came clear to me for the first time. For instance, there is one 2-page chart showing 30,000 of the nearest galaxies with relative distances represented by coloring and galaxy type (spiral or other) shown by shape - - I could not see ANY clear pattern, just a sort of random mess of little circles or spirals scattered higgledy-piggledy all across the pages. For that understanding alone, it was worth a look. But the book is relentless in its complexity and completeness to the point of being overwhelming at times.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful! By Nathan m Broussard A great gift for that space enthusiast child or adult. Full of fun graphics, and fascinating comparisons. It'll engage your imagination and curiosity with every turn of the page.

Cheryl Bachelder joined an ailing restaurant chain and turned it into the darling of the industry—by daring to serve the people in her organization well. When Bachelder was named CEO of Popeyes in the fall of 2007, guest visits had been declining for years, restaurant sales and profit trends were negative, and the company stock price had dropped from $34 in 2002 to $13. The brand was stagnant, and relations between the company and its franchise owners were strained. By 2014, average restaurant sales were up 25 percent, and profits were up 40 percent. Popeyes' market share had grown from 14 percent to 21 percent, and the stock price was over $40. The franchisees were so pleased with the turnaround that they began reinvesting in the brand, rapidly remodeling restaurants, and building new units around the world. The difference maker, Bachelder says, was a conscious decision to lead in a new way. She and her team created a workplace where people were treated with respect and dignity yet challenged to perform at the highest level. Silos and self were set aside in favor of collaboration and team play. And the results were measured with rigor and discipline. Servant leadership is sometimes derided as soft or ineffective, but this book shows that it's actually challenging and tough minded—a daring path. Bachelder takes you firsthand through the transformation of Popeyes and shows how a leader at any level can become a Dare-to-Serve leader.

Dare to Serve: How to Drive Superior Results by Serving Others, by Cheryl Bachelder

Review “With high-level experience at companies such as KFC and Domino's Pizza, coupled with stellar stock prices and profit margins at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Bachelder has the credentials for writing about leadership. Characterized in a Restaurant News article as a “modest buttoned up data wonk” who turned out to be a transformative leader, the author speaks at length in the first half of the book about the four pillars guiding Popeyes's turnaround and long-term strategy. Much of her subsequent advice about empowering employees, building consensus, setting ambitious goals, and tying daily work to a higher purpose echoes that of other recent management books. What sets hers apart is an emphasis on “servant leadership,” meaning focusing on others instead of self and achieving solid results by being humble, accountable, and modeling personal values at work. Specific tools for assessing accountability, articulating one's “personal purpose,” and identifying individual talents in self and subordinates are listed. VERDICT While the chatty storytelling style can be off-putting, quotes from thinkers as various as Nelson Mandela and Helen Keller are interspersed throughout with some 40 reflections meant to move the reader from understanding this management philosophy to implementing it. Recommended for those wishing to explore servant leadership in corporate America.”—Elizabeth Wood, Bowling Green State“Extraordinary! Dare to Serve describes the kind of leadership so desperately needed in the 21st century. A powerful blend of courage and humility, Cheryl Bachelder's engaging story offers a clear path for leaders to follow, and what makes her message so compelling is the tremendous results she's produced. I highly recommend this book.”—Stephen M. R. Covey, #1 bestselling author of The Speed of Trust and coauthor of Smart Trust “Dare to Serve is a crisp narrative of Cheryl's profound leadership journey as a corporate executive. Through balancing people, purpose, and principles, Cheryl produces outstanding results. Don't miss this opportunity to learn how it's done!”—Denise Ramos, CEO and President, ITT Corporation “When I speak with leaders, it is hard for them to grasp that servant leadership drives both great performance and great human satisfaction. Cheryl Bachelder provides an inspiring manual on how to be a Dare-to-Serve leader who drives superior results.”—Ken Blanchard, coauthor of The One Minute Manager® and Leading at a Higher Level “It has been a long time since I have read a book from beginning to end in one sitting, but that is exactly what I did with Dare to Serve, and I had to force myself not to read it again right then and there! It is truly a masterpiece and I will be sharing it with many friends, including those whom I am mentoring, just as soon as it is on the bookstands.”—Colleen Barrett, President Emeritus, Southwest Airlines, and coauthor of Lead with LUV“Anyone who leads anything will learn from the crisp and engaging stories in Dare to Serve. It is one of the best leadership books I have read and is a must-read for any leader who cares.”—Joel Manby, CEO, Herschend Family Entertainment, and author of Love Works“Dare to Serve stands out as one of the most practical, useful books on leadership that I have ever read. Full of real-world examples and grounded in the dramatic turnaround of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants, Cheryl shares with us how to serve others with intention, competence, character, courage, and humility. Her practical experience, proven results, and contagious passion to serve others well is an inspiration to all of us who want to make a real difference in the world.”—Bonnie Wurzbacher, Chief Resource Development Officer, World Vision International, and former Senior Vice President, Global Customer Leadership, The Coca-Cola Company “Dare to Serve chronicles both the remarkable turnaround story of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc., and Cheryl's inspiring personal journey of discovery, which galvanized her commitment to an unconventional approach to corporate leadership that has yielded remarkable results.”—Andy Stanley, founder, North Point Ministries, Inc.“Dare to Serve offers a candid, behind-the-scenes look at how a struggling restaurant chain was transformed into a soaring brand success through a simple but revolutionary model of leadership based on serving others. This book is a must-read for leaders of all kinds!”—Phil Cordell, Global Head, Focused Service and Hampton Brand Management, Hilton Worldwide“Compelling and inspiring! Bachelder makes the case for her people-focused approach to leadership through her real-life experience at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. Developed and honed in an industry where service to others is at the very core of what we do, these lessons are sure to translate not only across industries but to our personal lives as well.”—Dawn Sweeney, President and CEO, National Restaurant Association “Cheryl Bachelder's brave and unconventional approach to the turnaround of Popeyes challenges all of us to step up our game. Cheryl stands in the gap for us, calling us to a purpose that will drive better results for our organizations, while putting the needs of our people and customers ahead of our own.”—Scott MacLellan, CEO, TouchPoint Support Services, a Compass Group company“By focusing on the purpose-driven success of those she leads, paradoxically, Cheryl Bachelder gets the results we all want from our organizations. Dare to Serve is about the gutsy principles she applied to a business desperately in need of a turnaround and the spectacular results she achieved.”—Tim Irwin, PhD, bestselling author of Impact“This book turned my thinking upside-down. Cheryl shares her road-tested wisdom and shows how and why Dare-to-Serve leadership works so brilliantly. This is a game-changing book and should be required reading for all leaders.”—Art Barter, President and CEO, Datron Holdings, Inc., and founder and CEO, Servant Leadership Institute“Dare to Serve is a game changer! The principles outlined create exponential results far beyond what the individual ego will allow. Boards today are looking for Dare-to-Serve type leaders to ignite possibilities in their organizations. This is a must-read for leaders everywhere!”—Jane Edison Stevenson, Vice Chairman, Board & CEO Services, Korn Ferry, and coauthor of Breaking Away

Miller Cheryl Bachelder, the CEO of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, pens a clear-eyed, forthright case study for servant leadership. Although the key theme of her book is serving others, she forgoes the platitudes and "feel good" elements that tend to accompany this type of message and instead offers a specific game plan for how she helped turn this restaurant chain around by daring to serve. One of the things I most appreciated about this book is Bachelder’s willingness to take an honest look at her flaws (even talented CEOs have them!) and describe how, earlier in her career, she was focused on achievement based on only her personal goals. When she repositioned the way she saw leadership—as an opportunity to serve others—she was able to achieve results in a different way. This humble stance makes the advice in the book seem accessible. Indeed, humility is a strong theme in the book, appearing again and again throughout the pages. She offers this important distinction about humility: “Humility is not being a doormat, it is simply thinking less about our own needs—and more about the needs of others.” Bachelder says this shift in focus allows us to “exit [the leadership] spotlight” and instead shine the lights on other’s contributions. This book has the right mix of "how to" advice interspersed with personal anecdotes. It would be perfect for any person with leadership responsibility (at work, at home, or in the community) who wishes to make a bigger impact.

McConaughy I learned about servant leadership in the 1970's and, when being in positions of leadership since then, have always tried to live my life according to the philosophy and practices it represents. Robert Greenleaf, the originator of servant leadership, proposed that leadership was a continuum with people who wanted to serve first on one end and those who wanted to lead first on the other end. The leader first was typically after power and possessions. The servant first was focused on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. Enter Cheryl Bachelder forty years later, on becoming CEO of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, Inc., along with her leadership team rediscovering the idea of servant leadership. This is a great book about what a difference servant leadership can make in a major corporation. It's a story about a major change of organizational culture, a story about rebuilding trust where it had been lost, and a story about turning a chain of restaurants from a financial downturn to unprecedented success. It's fun to read. It's instructive. It's engaging. It reinvigorated my personal commitment to the philosophy of servant leadership. It reestablished my willingness to dare to serve.

By Rebecca Henderson Cheryl Bachelder’s “Dare to Serve” is a quick and easy read, but filled with absolute timeless wisdom. Perhaps the subtitle, “How to Drive Superior Results by Serving Others” sums everything in the book up in a tidy phrase.“Dare to Serve” could easily be read in an afternoon, but I urge you to read it more carefully while letting each morsel of wisdom – and there are many – fully sink into your mind. I love quotes, and Bachelder has filled the book with many. My favorite is one by Helen Keller on page 81: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” In addition to quotes, the author has placed pithy Dare-to-Serve Reflections strategically throughout the book. The one most meaningful to me is on page 60: “If you knew the top-priority values of the people on your team, how would you lead more effectively?”While Cheryl Bachelder has written many important sentences in “Dare to Serve”, to me the most important one is found in her bio, on page 182. She states that she and her husband are raising their children “with no manual other than the Bible.” Wonderfully wise words well written!

I find this book very helpful and informative in ways of how different body movements and positions can be interpreted and how are they being represented to be able to read the one in front of you. Nonverbal communication is something that is being practiced every day without us even noticing it. This book explains how to interpret those movements and would really help you gauge the one in front of you, and would really help in everyday life and having some knowledge in this field would somewhat make it a little bit easier if you want to move forward or back off. Great book…

The Argonautica, by Apollonius Rhodius

Review `H.'s translation succeeds admirably in being sensitive both to the needs of a Greek learner who is grappling with the original and to the exigencies of fluent English. In maintaining this balancing-act he manages not to stray from the spirit and content of the Greek. H. treats the original with the respect it deserves. His version is accompanied by detailed notes and an index, together with a clear, concise introduction to the poem and its place in the Alexandrian tradition. Lecturers planning a Classics-in-translation course for Greek epic need look no further than this volume for an accessible translation which will stimulate student interest and imagination. This book will be the standard English-language translation of Apollonius' Argonautica for many years to come.' R.J. Clare, University of Leeds, Journal of Hellenic Studies, Vol. 116, 1996

From the Back Cover The aim of the series remains that of including the works of all the principal classical authors. Although this has been largely accomplished, new volumes are still being published to fill the remaining gaps, and old editions are being revised in the light of recent research or replaced.

About the Author Apollonius was among the foremost Homeric scholars in the Alexandrian period. He wrote the period's first scholarly monograph on Homer, critical of the editions of the Iliad and Odyssey published by Zenodotus, his predecessor as head of the Library of Alexandria. Argonautica seems to have been written partly as an experimental means of communicating his own researches into Homer's poetry. It has even been called "a kind of poetic dictionary of Homer", without at all detracting from its merits as poetry. He has been credited with scholarly prose works on Archilochus and on problems in Hesiod. He is also considered to be one of the period's most important authors on geography, though approaching the subject differently from Eratosthenes, his successor at the library and a radical critic of Homer's geography. It was a time when the accumulation of scientific knowledge was enabling advances in geographical studies, as represented by the activities of Timosthenes, a Ptolemaic admiral and a prolific author. Apollonius set out to integrate new understandings of the physical world with the mythical geography of tradition and his Argonautica was, in that sense, a didactic epic on geography, again without detracting from its merits as poetry.

Wells Loeb Classical Library's edition of the Argonautica is probably one of the best in print today. As with all Loeb editions, the english translation has the original greek on the the facing page. The problems most people have with Loeb editions is that the translation sometimes is stilted. These stilted translations come from the fact that Loeb editions have been in print for the better part of 100 years. Argonautica, however, recently was updated. So the english translation in this Loeb edition flows well and avoids the euphamisms and stilted language of older translations.Even if your knowledge of greek is weak (like mine), there is much to be gained from this Loeb edition. The preface discusses some of the textual issues with re-constructing the original greek. And the introduction places Appollonius of Rhodes in his historical context.Personally, I used Teach Yourself Ancient Greek Complete Course to figure out how to pronounce the Greek alphabet. Then I can at least hear what the original would have sounded like as I read the Argonautica to myself. At the end of the day, if you want a good translation and a book that will stand the test of time, the Loeb edition is the best one on the market.

It has the ancient text in Greek on one side and Latin on the other. The introduction and notes are by reputable scholars that always add to the understanding of the text. They make a lovely addition to my library! I have many books from the Loeb Classical Library and they are all excellent!!! This copy of the Argonautica has a clear prose translation of the text and is well-written.

Because the work was completed in 1912, some of the language is archaic but not unreadable. The content of the book is enjoyable. For readers who enjoyed Homer's "Iliad," they will enjoy the "Argonautica" especially since it delves into the heroic deeds of the Homeric heroes' forefathers. Additionally, the book is enjoyable in terms of mythology. (The relationship between Jason and Medea in Book 3 is thought to be a precursor to the story of Dido and Aeneas in Virgil's "Aeneid.") Overall, an excellent book.

From the Back Cover

Arthur Conan Doyle’s second Sherlock Holmes novel is both a detective story and an imperial romance. Ostensibly the story of Mary Morstan, a beautiful young woman enlisting the help of Holmes to find her vanished father and solve the mystery of her receipt of a perfect pearl on the same date each year, it gradually uncovers a tale of treachery and human greed. The action audaciously ranges from penal settlements on the Andaman Islands to the suburban comfort of South London, and from the opium-fuelled violence of Agra Fort during the Indian ‘Mutiny’ to the cocaine-induced contemplation of Holmes’ own Baker Street.

This Broadview Edition places Doyle’s tale in the cultural, political, and social contexts of late nineteenth-century colonialism and imperialism. The appendices provide a wealth of relevant extracts from hard-to-find sources, including official reports, memoirs, newspaper editorials, and anthropological studies.

Callahan I purchased this book in part on the strength of three 5-star reviews on this site. This is a very handsome hardcover volume at a surprisingly reasonable price. There are three classifications of stories in the book. First, stories primarily written by Adrian Conan Doyle, with some input from JD Carr. Second, two stories written almost entirely by Mr. Carr, possibly with some slight input from Doyle. Third, six stories written solely by Mr. Adrian Doyle.Since I have read a number of mysteries by Carr, and expected much, I was most disappointed to find his two stories the weakest in the book. In one instance, after reading the first page I was able to anticipate the entire plot. In the other case, I simply found the story flat, uninteresting, and narrowly derivative of similar stories in the original Holmes canon. To the contrary, some of the stories by Mr. Doyle cannot be praised enough. One that's typical, "The Adventure of Foulkes Rath," seems up to the work of Arthur Conan Doyle himself. All in all, Adrian Doyle admirably captures the style and brooding Gothic tone that so typifies many of the best stories in the original Holmes canon. Moreover, Adrian Doyle's stories have a kind of life and warmth that brings the Edwardian world alive for the reader.I would give the book five stars were it not for a few tales that seem off the pace, and decidedly inferior to the others. Alas-- and surprisingly-- these are from JD Carr's pen. Perhaps Carr tried too diligently to write an impeccably logical mystery, where nothing in the denoument was not well provided for in the early story. The effect, unfortunately, was to create a mechanical kind of plot, which made it all to easy for the reader to anticipate too accurately the entire unfolding of the story. So in this interesting and generally worthwhile book of tales, we might have the amateur outwriting the old master. All in all, a worthwhile purchase -- and handsome book with great bedtime reading at a very reasonable price.

Ryan Patrick Callahan's excellent review is right on the money, but I'm giving this little book four stars anyway just because, when it's good, it's _very_ good. Some of the stories contained herein -- based on Watson's occasional references to unrecorded (not "unsolved", as the current edition's subtitle incorrectly has it) cases -- surpass some of the elder Doyle's later works. Highly recommended, especially as an antidote to the surfeit of "pastiches" that can't seem to get any of the details right.Adrian Conan Doyle (with or without John Dickson Carr) tells a straight no-frills tale very much in the spirit of the Sherlockian canon; Holmes doesn't wind up getting married, Watson doesn't turn out to be the real Holmes, et cetera, et cetera. And there are no attempts to link Holmes to fabulous ripped-from-the-headlines figures like Dracula or Jack the Ripper -- these are perfectly ordinary cases of the kind in which Holmes himself was known to delight for their own sake owing to their touch of the _outre_ and the singular features they presented to the reasoner. Solid stuff despite the weaknesses of a few of the tales. If you want a couple of novel-length pastiches to go with it, I recommend Nicholas Meyer's first two: _The Seven Per Cent Solution_ and _The West End Horror_.

I don't like to spoil endings, but let me say this: if you think the book is boring at first, don't stop reading: there is a TON of action towards the end.
