"[...]save two poor women, asleep, their feet on the bars of chairs, their heads on their knees. Leaning forward a little, he saw, hanging above him in a dark chapel, the light of a lamp, like a ruby in its red glass; no sound save the military tread of the Suisse, making his round in the distance. Durtal sat down again; the sweetness of his solitude was enhanced by the aromatic perfume of wax, and the memories, now faint, of incense, but it was suddenly broken. As the first chords crashed on the organ Durtal recognized the "Dies iræ," that despairing hymn of the Middle Ages; instinctively he bowed his head and listened. This was no more as in the "De Profundis" an humble supplication, a suffering which believes it has been[...]".

Beautiful book By A Customer Anyone who has read "La Bas" (the novel Huysmans wrote before this one) needs to read "En Route", since the former plumbs the depths of evil, and this one scales the heights of Catholic devotion. It is really the story of a soul struggling to believe, and marked the turning point in Huysmans' life as he embraced Christianity. The scene where he meditates on a large crucifix as it is reflected in the water of a pond is a masterpiece of religious introspection.

En Route is a beautiful, compelling case study of religious (re)conversion By Subterranean Subterfuge En Route is a beautiful, compelling case study of religious (re)conversion, only Dostoyevsky has matched Huysmans in capturing religious experience, in portraying a man's relationship to the Sacred having passed through the "fires of doubt," of Schopenhauerian disenchantment of existence, a weariness with life, and miraculous return to, in this case, to Catholicism, the "hospital for the soul."

Until Every Animal is Free is an insightful, candid work heralding the Animal Liberation Movement as the next logical step on the path of social justice, dispelling many of the myths that keep us from getting there. In it, Saryta Rodriguez challenges the Myth of Human Supremacy, and explores some of the ideological pillars behind the belief that humans are superior to all other animals. This book also discusses animal liberation theory, as well as (primarily twenty-first century) efforts to put animal liberation on the public agenda.

The early chapters detail the author’s journey to a compassionate lifestyle. Then we learn about animal rights in general- the intellectual, philosophical and ethical considerations that inform the movement. Many of the tired, fallacious arguments used to justify the exploitation of animals are examined and dismantled. Even though I may personally disagree with the methodology of groups such as DxE I can still recommend this book without reservation.

This book is filled with what so many ideas vegans already believe, but written in clear, no-nonsense terms. But this isn't a "the world is horrible, but there's nothing we can do about it" kind of book. Author Saryta Rodriguez aims to inspire people to take action, and even, perhaps unwittingly, provides ample information for when people argue that exploiting animals is their "right".

If you're considering veganism and animal liberation for the first time and want to know more, then this book is for you. If you're already firmly established on that path, then this book is also for you! Being so well researched and written, I think that everybody would gain insight from reading this.

Captivology: The Science of Capturing People's Attention, by Ben Parr

Review "Throughout the book, Parr keeps readers engaged, amused and focused, proving that the science of Captivology works." - Success Magazine"Don't shout, captivate -- that's the key to capturing attention. And you don't need to be especially good-looking, loud or charismatic to do so -- there's actually a science behind it. In Captivology, Ben Parr doesn't get all geeky explaining how it works; instead he draws on examples from Beyoncé, Steve Jobs and the creators of Game of Thrones. Whether you're an entrepreneur, manager or up-and-coming worker bee, Captivology has tips for you."- New York Post"Spryly written... [Captivology] is a worthwhile read, if you can concentrate your mind." - Financial Times"If you are a marketer, salesperson, small business owner, or even if you are in the non-profit area, 'Captivology' needs to be on your nightstand and in your library." - Small Business Trends“Parr gets it: To succeed in a world where attention is scarce, captivating audiences at every level is a skill that everyone needs. Captivology will show you how to capture other people’s attention, whether you are teacher, entrepreneur, musician, or simply a dreamer with a big idea.” (Adam Braun, New York Times bestselling author of The Promise of a Pencil)“The Internet has made it easier to communicate but also more challenging to be heard. Ben Parr’s Captivology applies recent discoveries in psychology and neuroscience to the attention economy so that anyone can rise over the crowd and stand out.” (Craig Newmark, founder, Craigslist)“Filled with useful tips, practical advice and case studies, Captivology is a book everyone in the attention business should buy. (By the way, that’s YOU. Every. One. Of. Us.)” (Sree Sreenivasan, Chief Digital Officer, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and professor of digital media, Columbia Journalism School)“Captivology is a brilliant investigation of how one can make a mark in this world by commanding the attention of others (not easy in this incredibly fluid culture) and how we can build on that initial impression to make something tangible and lasting.” (Donal Logue, actor, producer, and director)

From the Author "Attention is the fundamental currency and lifeblood of the modern economy. Teachers can't get anything done without the attention of their students. Charities can't survive without the attention of donors. Entrepreneurs need the attention of users and customers. That's why I wrote Captivology: to help everybody capture attention for their passions, projects and ideas. This book will teach you the real science behind attention and how that utilize that knowledge effectively for whatever you're passionate about. That's why I analyzed more than 1,000 research studies and interviewed dozens of researchers and thought leaders to uncover the science of attention. I firmly believe Captivology can change the world for the better. I hope you'll take a chance and read my book." ~ Ben

From the Back Cover

Why are we captivated by sites like Facebook and Instagram, but couldn't care less about MySpace? Why do some musicians grow as popular as Beyoncé, while others never make the charts? Why do some nonprofits, such as Charity: Water, succeed in getting our donations, while other charities are ineffective? And why can't anyone seem to ever get the attention of their kids?

In Captivology, Ben Parr, former editor of Mashable and cofounder of DominateFund, reveals how and why our mind pays attention to some events, ideas, or people and not others. Vividly bringing to life the stories of en-trepreneurs, musicians, filmmakers, thought leaders, political strategists, magicians, and other masters of attention, Parr presents a new understanding of how attention works and identifies seven captivation triggers—techniques guaranteed to help you capture and retain the attention of friends, colleagues, customers, fans, and even strangers. These triggers spark our brain's attention response systems by appealing to fundamental aspects of human nature.

Combining the latest scientific research with interviews of visionaries who have successfully brought attention to their ideas, projects, and companies (Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, film director Steven Soderbergh, LinkedIn's CEO Jeff Weiner, New York Times bestselling author Susan Cain, and more), Parr makes the case that you can rise above the noisy crowd and be heard—without having to shout.

Insightful and practical, Captivology will change how you tell your kid to clean her room, deliver your next presentation, con-vince the world to support your cause, or attract users to your product.

Somewhat useful but falls short as a business book By Cheshire If this were meant to actually be a science book, I would think this was an interesting book, but as the business book it aims to be, I think it falls short. The book gets more useful in its later chapters, but the beginning of the book mostly just confirms common-sense understandings of capturing attention by showing some science and examples underneath it. There isn't a lot in the first two-thirds of the book that inspired me to find unusual and compelling new ways to capture attention. For me to love a business book, it has to have serious aha moments every page or two. Instead, what I read in this book is a lot of name-dropping ("look how many important people I spoke to!") and a bit of self-puffery ("I call this concept [newly coined cutesy buzzword]"). Also, it happened enough times that I noticed, but his descriptions of women he profiled often included appreciations of their physical beauty ("raven-haired" appeared more than once), but I didn't see the same in his descriptions of men. The physical descriptions of the women bore no relationship to the wisdom they had to impart. Right now, as the wider culture is waking up to the strong disparities of the treatment of men and women in the tech industry of which he's part, it hurts to read.Three stars because it's at least somewhat useful, but it's not a book I'm likely to return to for continued inspiration.

How and why captivation “triggers” affect our attention and awareness every day, often without our being aware of it By Robert Morris There really is a science that reveals how to capture another person’s attention. In 2001, Thomas H. Davenport and John C. Beck published The Attention Economy. Theirs is a fascinating subject: ADD in the business world. Almost everyone continues to experience information overload and it's far worse now than it was 14 years ago. Some who have studied this phenomenon invoke metaphors such as a "blizzard" or “tsunami” of data. Each day, information providers find it increasingly more difficult to reach those who are most important to them. How to attract their attention? Then, how to retain that attention with what has been described as "stickiness" by the brothers Heath? After conducting an extensive research project, Davenport and Beck conclude that attention is "the new currency of business." Perhaps Michael Wolf agrees, having published a brilliant book about "the entertainment economy" in 1999; perhaps B. Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore agree, having published (also in 1999) a book about "the experience economy."Ben Parr shares his own thoughts about this science in Captivology whose somewhat hokey title suggests that capturing attention is far more important than merely attracting it, especially these days when the human attention span resembles a strobe light blink. Of course, as is usually the situation, there’s both good news and bad news: getting someone’s attention is good only if (HUGE if) they appreciate it rather than resent it. There are no second chances if curiosity is corrupted by deceit. These are among the several dozen passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of Parr’s coverage in the first five chapters:o The Three Stages of Attention (Pages 13-23)o The Automaticity Trigger (28-32)o Why Did a Symbol Make Us Care About Heartbleed? (43-46)o Why Can We Hear Our Names in a Crowded Room? (49-52)o Moving Beyond Immediate Attention (55-56)o The Framing Trigger (59-62)o The Inertia of Ideas (62-65)o How Do Politicians Set the Agenda? (71-75)o The Final Word on Frames of Reference (81-82)o The Disruption Trigger (84-87)o Statistics + Finger Paints = A Surprising Lesson (88-92)o Keeping Things Significant (97-99)o Simplicity, Surprise, and Significance in Context (102-103)o The Reward Mechanism (106-110)o How to Deliver Extrinsic Rewards (113-116)o How to Deliver Intrinsic Rewards (121-122)o How to Get People to Walk Through Your Doors (126-128)o Balancing Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Rewards (129-131)Parr provides an abundance of information, insights, and counsel based on more than 500 scientific studies of attention within the disciplines of psychology and neurology. He also conducted about 50 interviews of various thought leaders and drew upon relevant case studies. This is indeed an evidence-driven rather than theory-driven book.I was especially interested in his discussion of what he characterizes as seven “captivation triggers”; that is, psychological and scientific phenomena that evoke responses in the mind. They are:1. Automaticity: Initiate appealing sensory stimulation2. Framing: Relocate expectations to a different context3. Disruption: Eliminate expectations to create cognitive "room" for something else4. Reward: Leverage (exploiting) people's reward preferences5. Reputation: Obtain trust with credentials, track record, and reputation6. Mystery: Use mystery, uncertainty, and ambiguity to create intrigue that sustains interest7. Acknowledgement: Use humility to gain credibility with self-deprecating deferenceReaders will appreciate Parr's inclusion of dozens of stories that anchor his insights within a real-world context and frame of reference. In fact, as master manipulators such as Steve Jobs demonstrate, audiences love to be entertained but also delighted by surprise. Consider this example of an effective "plot twist" as a mystery trigger:"At the end of Apple's big presentations and project launches, when it seemed like Jobs had finished his presentation, he would come back with three little words: 'One more thing...' When he said those words, the crowd would go wild and Jobs would unveil one more surprise product."The plot twist without a spoiler is only one of dozens of means by with to capture and then maintain control of attention, be it one person or a several thousand. My own take is that the credibility of those who are masters of that process is essential to their effectiveness. Self-serving tricks and gimmicks are self-defeating. More to the point, they betray the trust that people invest with their attention. By all means use various triggers to attract attention to what you offer but make certain that what you offer is worthy of attention. Ben Parr brilliantly explains "why some ideas and ideologies are so compelling and why other ideas don't capture your attention, even if you know they should." Attention resembles trust in that both must be earned and can so quickly be lost. Yes, Steve Jobs was a master of all seven triggers but he only used them in good faith. So must anyone else and that, for me, is the most important point for aspiring captivologists to keep in mind.

By Kenneth Yeung If you're looking for tactics that you can use to get the attention of your customers, co-workers, employees, friends, and/or family, then "Captivology" may not be what you're looking for. HOWEVER, coming up with tactics isn't difficult -- it's being able to understand the thought process and psychology of grabbing people's attention. In this, Ben Parr's book accomplishes it and proves its theory. In reading "Captivology", it was pretty difficult to put it down and there were plenty of real-world examples shared proving his captivating triggers."Captivology" isn't a book filled with stories. Rather, it reads like a textbook that one might find in a academic setting. It's informative, but not dull to read. Really worth reading for anyone who's eager to hone their skills in attention-grabbing techniques. If you're in the business world, this is great to help with presentations and proposals. Working in the education space, find ways to grip the attention of students. And there's so much more that you can take with you for whatever you want to do.My full review is here: http://blog.thelettertwo.com/2015/03/01/ben-parr-captivology-the-book-review/

An organic semiconductor is an organic material with semiconductor properties, that is, with an electrical conductivity between that of insulators and that of metals. Single molecules, oligomers, and organic polymers can be semiconductive. Semiconducting small molecules (aromatic hydrocarbons) include the polycyclic aromatic compounds pentacene, anthracene, and rubrene. Polymeric organic semiconductors include poly(3-hexylthiophene), poly(p-phenylene vinylene), as well as polyacetylene and its derivatives.

"[...]knows several people who have seen them—in the Highlands—and heard their music. If ever you are in Nether Lochaber, go to the Fairy Hill, and you may hear the music yourself, as grown-up people have done, but you must goon a fine day. Again, if there are really no fairies, why do people believe in them, all over the world? The ancient Greeks believed, so did the old Egyptians, and the Hindoos, and the Red Indians, and is it likely, if there are no fairies, that so many different peoples would have seen and heard them? The Rev. Mr. Baring-Gould saw several fairies when he was a boy, and was travelling in the land of the Troubadours. For these reasons, the Editor thinks that there are certainly fairies, but they never do anyone any harm; and, in England, they have been frightened away by smoke and schoolmasters. As to Giants, they have died out, but real Dwarfs are common in the forests of Africa. Probably a good many stories not perfectly true have been told about fairies, but such stories have also been told about Napoleon, Claverhouse, Julius Caesar, and Joan of Arc, all of whom certainly existed. A wise child will, therefore, remember that, if he grows up and becomes a member of the Folk Lore Society, ALL the tales in this book were not offered to him as absolutely[...]".

As things changed only one thing stayed constant, my favorite books are still Andrew Lang's Fairy books. The Yellow Fairy book is a collection of 48 fairy tales written the way they were supposed to be written. Each tale ranges in length anywhere from a couple of pages up to about 20. The tales are fairly easy reads, but they don't lose any of their appeal. The book also contains several wonderful illustrations. Some of the stories include: The Six Swans, Story of the Emperor's New Clothes, The Crow, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Three Brothers, The Magic Ring, How to Tell a True Princes, Thumbelina, and more.I would suggest reading this book, I love it!

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful. A bright multicultural selection By Heidi Anne Heiner With tales such as The Blue Mountains, The Cat and the Mouse in Partnership, The Dragon and His Grandmother, Fairer-than-a-Fairy, The Flower Queen's Daughter, The Glass Axe, How To Tell a True Princess, and many others how can anyone not find this book fun to read? Once again, Lang edits a book full of fairy tales from many lands that will entertain children and adults. The black and white illustrations are also superb.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Leaving behind the well-knowns for some incredible complexity By Emily J. Morris What makes this particular volume of Lang's collection remarkable is its collection of quite unknown stories. While we all love "Little Red Riding Hood" and "Cinderella", there is nothing wrong with venturing for more complex stories, and that is what this volume provides.I have not researched these, but I am under the impression that many of these stories were actually "written". I'm not sure how everyone will take that threat to oral folklore, but good fantasy is good fantasy, and I enjoy reading a fairy tale-esque story with extra complexity that still holds the same aura. The illustrations are gorgeous, as usual, and display intricacies that fit the stories superbly.Perhaps a more wild collection, but for that I love it all the more.

The Essential Hacking Guide for Beginners

Have you ever wanted to learn more about hacking? Have you wanted to understand the secrets of the hacking community, or understand some of the key techniques used by hackers? Have you wondered about the motivations of hackers, or been intrigued by how people are still targeted by hackers despite the increasing availability of computer security software? If so, then this book is right for you! Hacking is the act of gaining unauthorized access to a computer system, and can include viewing or copying data, or even creating new data. Hacking is more than simply a pastime for those who are interested in technology, and more than simply an illegal activity used for personal gain and with malicious intent, although both of these motivations do make up much of hacking activity.

This book provides an introduction to the key concepts, techniques and challenges of hacking and includes the following topics:

  • What is hacking
  • Hacking and the influence of cyberpunk
  • The different types of hackers
  • The role of computer security
  • Hacking techniques

By T. bailey "--Little did Mrs. Dinkman know that when a somewhat less than scrupulous salesman sprayed her dying suburban Los Angeles lawn with a dose of the Metamorphizer she was witnessing the beginning of the end of the world. That salesman was Albert Weener, a two-bit huckster looking for instant riches, who had cajoled the remarkable new plant nutrient away from its recalcitrant inventor, botanist Josephine Spencer Francis. The only problem was, Miss Francis did not yet know how to neutralize her magic chemical--""Written in 1947, a science fiction novel about the grass we tread upon. When an unscrupulous salesman sprays a dying suburban Los Angeles lawn with an untested chemical spray, it is the beginning of the end of the world. The grass begins to grow uncontrollably and riotously, ten feet height, thick, tough, impenetrable, gradually engulfing Los Angeles, then California...After reading this novel, you will never view your lawn in the same way.""The story is told with a satirical lilt, with a defini te bias for farce characterizations and situations; brightening what would otherwise be a harrowing tale."

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Greener Than You Think By Christopher Campbell I encountered this book by chance at a used book store in 1980.I read it then and wrote on the inside cover "Undoubtedly my favorite book of all!" All these years later, now being 2003,I thought to myself "I wonder if it's still in print?"Well, I see I can get it used and I want to buy one and send it along to director Tim Burton and tell him to make this into a movie!I laugh aloud at the events in the story. Moore's subtle use of language brings new meaning to the word stealth. His characters come to life effortlessly and satisfyingly. Our hapless everyman protagonist, Albert Weener, hasn't a clue as to how the world around him perceives him and moves forward to the beat of his own drummer. All the while, the world's very existence is threatened by a product of his own doing. As I reread this book twenty years later I still want to say it's my favorite.Read it....it's a real gem!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Science Fiction Miracle Grow By Joe Thorburn Written soon after World War II, this book encapsulates many of that decade's turmoil and at the same time manages to project into the future to address some interesting contemporary ideas into a compact and delightful science fiction satire. Ward Moore's style of writing is clever and comical without veering from the main character's oddball mindset and vernacular. The mutant grass is a metaphor for good against evil, mankind against nature or nature against mankind, World War III, and precedes the writings of the environmental historians and of environmental ethics in philosophy. The book also touches on such issues as environmental determinism, evolution, and survival of the fittest, and too, looks at various biblical themes, among them, Adam and Eve (Eve being Miss Francis) and Noah's Ark. When you read it you will probably find your own list of cleverly placed themes and analogies.

Weighing in from the cutting-edge frontiers of science, today’s most forward-thinking minds explore the rise of “machines that think.”

Stephen Hawking recently made headlines by noting, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Others, conversely, have trumpeted a new age of “superintelligence” in which smart devices will exponentially extend human capacities. No longer just a matter of science-fiction fantasy (2001, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Her, etc.), it is time to seriously consider the reality of intelligent technology, many forms of which are already being integrated into our daily lives. In that spirit, John Brockman, publisher of Edge. org (“the world’s smartest website” – The Guardian), asked the world’s most influential scientists, philosophers, and artists one of today’s most consequential questions: What do you think about machines that think?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great read, missing themes By Engin Erdogan I really enjoyed the collection of short form articles. I read it exclusively on my phone so it was easy to read an article or two every time I was on the subway. I liked the curation of authors from academicians to artists to writers to visionaries; they all seem to introduce a different perspective to the subject matter. There is some repetition of themes across articles, which is, I suspect, how the book was organized, based on underlying themes. I wish the editors made these themes a bit more accessible and offered a way to visually explore various facets of artificial intelligence, maybe in an accompanying website, since there is so much richness in them.

In 1851 a small militia trekked through California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains and discovered a site so spectacular that, over the succeeding century and a half, millions of others would follow to gaze upon its splendor: Yosemite. Publishing in time for the 125th anniversary of Yosemite National Park, Kate Nearpass Ogden’s Yosemite offers a comprehensive look at both the scientific and cultural history of this remarkable place, exploring everything from its geological origins to the political will it took to preserve it.             Known for its unusual and dramatic rock formations, breathtaking vistas, and treasure trove of waterfalls, Yosemite receives nearly four million visitors a year. Scanning over these crowds, Ogden soon leaves them to walk through Yosemite’s history, back to its original name, “Ahwahnee”—given by its Miwok inhabitants—and the tragic irony behind what we call it now, which early Anglo-American visitors mistook as the Miwok appellation, but which some scholars now suggest in fact means “there are killers among them.” Visiting with famed stewards such as John Muir, and lesser-known ones such as James Mason Hutchings and Galen Rowell, she recounts the valley’s discovery by westerners, exploration, exploitation, and its eventual preservation as one of the first National Parks. Ogden also looks at the many artworks it has inspired and the larger hold it has had on the imagination and our dreams of the unspoiled American west. Rich in detail and beautifully illustrated with everything from landscape photography to paintings inspired by its beauties, this book is a must read for anyone who has ever stepped into this incomparable valley—or anyone who has wanted to.

Yosemite, by Kate Nearpass Ogden

Review “The author looks at the scientific and cultural history of the area. . . . the book features more than 100 images illustrating Nearpass Ogden’s engaging text, together with sections on the geology, plants, and wildlife found in and around Yosemite.” (Outdoor Photography)“Ogden takes in a lungful of classic America in Yosemite. Taking an accessible ramble through its history and geology, it places the park at the centre of the USA’s cultural heartland and changing attitudes.” (Wanderlust)“Clear and intelligent writing . . . with instructive sections on geology, plants, and animals, human history, art and literature, tourism, and more. Clearly this is the one book on Yosemite to read and reread. Ogden brings the perspectives of a thoughtful twenty-first-century cultural historian to bear on her subject. Her commentary is most helpful in the chapters that deal with religious and artistic responses to the valley. It is refreshing to have Yosemite placed within the broad context of American ideas and ideals.” (David Robertson, author of West of Eden: A History of the Art and Literature of Yosemite)

About the Author Kate Nearpass Ogden is professor of art history at Stockton University in Galloway, New Jersey. Her essays on the artists of Yosemite Valley have appeared in Yosemite: Art of an American Icon and Yosemite and Sequoia: A Century of California National Parks.

Boerner At first glance, you wouldn’t think that a book titled Yosemite would be about anything other than the towering sequoias, breathtaking waterfalls, vast wilderness areas, deep valleys, grand meadows and geology of the California national park. So how is it that an art history professor writes a book about the park and its natural resources? As it turns out, the author brings a unique perspective in looking at the land through the eyes of a historian. And not just a historian but the artists, who through the ages visited the park and either photographed or painted the magnificent landscapes. All this is not to say that Ogden brushes over the geology or the science of Yosemite. She does not. But she splatters these with photos and paint as any artist would.

The author makes two arguments. First, that you must put some effort into taking control of your finances. Second, that the effort is not as monumental as you think and the rewards are much greater than you imagine. She's right! You cannot "compartmentalize" finances. How you manage your money (however much or little it may be) affects every aspect of your life - your physical and emotional well-being, your relationships, what hobbies you can pursue and where you can live. Saying that it's not worth while to make the effort to get control of your finances is saying that your life doesn't matter. It's giving up on yourself.Don't make the mistake of thinking that you can avoid taking control of your spending by simply getting a job that pays more. You'll find that the job application asks for permission to check your credit rating. If it's lousy, you won't even be considered for that high-paying job that would put you on Easy Street. And you can blow through a big income just as easily as a small one. This author walks you through the process in clear, easy-to-understand language. It's a wonderfully readable combination of advice, fascinating examples, and moral support. Best of all, she instructs you gently and without a hint of condescension or blame. It's like sitting down with that favorite aunt or uncle (or grandparent) who understands that people make mistakes and who believes in your ability to turn things around. Getting started is the hard part. Take a deep breath and just do it. You'll be glad you did. This is one of my three favorite books on personal finance. The other two are LIFE AFTER DEBT by Rob Kosberg and HOW TO MANAGE YOUR MONEY WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ANY by Erik Wecks. With the wisdom of these authors behind you, you can't fail to see change for the better. Good luck.

By Tom This book (The Smart Money Blueprint) How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck by Avery Breyer is really an amazing quick read and was well worth my time for several reasons:1. I picked this short e-book up, so I could work through the idea of budgeting with my daughter, to help her, for all of the right reasons.2. I started to skim it myself, and quickly realized there were several ideas that I may have already known, had forgotten about, or needed to be doing. Regardless, I immediately started using several suggestions, so I could do better with my own money. (I am now by the way, thanks to Avery's book).3. It is a pretty quick read and is packed with a lot of encouragement and tips. There is nothing preachy or condescending. It is like having someone talk about money management, like I wish someone did WITH me years ago. This is NOT something new-under-the sun. It is straight forward, concise and practical.4. This comes with a link for a FREE optional budgeting spreadsheet template to download. That's right, FREE! I am an experienced Microsoft and OpenOffice spreadsheet user and have designed and used many spreadsheet templates over the years. This is a solid and practical piece of work and a real timesaver. It is worth many times the price of this book itself. At a minimum, it could suggest ideas for you to design and use your own template, if you have the skills and the time. I would rather take a walk outside and reflect on what Avery has obviously put a lot of time and thought into.5. You might already be in control of your money, your budget or have an approach that works good for you. I know I am keeping this book handy for it's simplicity, practicality, uplifting messages and sage advice.Avery quickly suggested saving and labeling the original downloaded file and ONLY working with a copy. I have stored my original off of my hard drive. That way it is safe from me. Obviously, I highly recommend this book. Now, if Avery would write a book, this good, on how to find money wherever I travel, I will buy that book and upgrade my suitcase.

Finally someone has come up with some practical, easy, quick, and workable suggestions to get out of debt and stay there.Avery's solid introduction shows us that our problems are not only understood but are manageable. `Maybe credit card debt is the only way you are able to keep afloat right now, although you know that's not a long-term solution. Maybe you feel ashamed that you're not doing a better job of managing your money -- you feel frustrated that you can't get ahead. And maybe you've tried budgeting, but it just didn't work for you.... I promise you that if you read this book and follow the advice in here, you'll be set on a path to a world where you control your money, you have a plan that will ensure you don't run out of money, and you are no longer a slave to your bills.' (Big sigh of relief is in order right now)What to learn in this book: `put together a budget that will: Help you pay down bad debt, and avoid getting more, Help you reach your financial goals with greater ease, Provide for your daily monetary needs, both now, and in the future, Lower or eliminate your worries about money, Take an hour per month or less to keep tabs on, Actually work.'So, some techniques: to take control of your money: Track your spending, Track you Income, Always have a backup plan (work overtime, work a second job, start a side business....), Get real about Needs versus Wants, Relationships and Money: Talk about it!, and Have an emergency fund. The benefits of having a budget: Improves your credit rating, lowers stress, keeps you honest, helps you achieve your goals, and helps you secure your basic needs now and in the future.Avery is so level headed about all of this that the ideas and style of presenting them are infectious. The tips on how to get the right mindset for success is a particularly helpful chapter - one imbued with psychology and realism. And in creating a budgeted life there are budget traps to avoid (self-defeating attitudes plus). And the other areas cover are The Easiest Way to Have More Money, Without Earning More, How to Trim Your Expenses With (Almost) No Effort, Budgeting 101: How to Make a Budget, Month 1: Find Out Where You Stand, Month 2: This is the Part Where You Take Control of Your Money, and Month 3 and Beyond - How to Stay on Track.Summarizing this book is in many ways unfair. You really need to start form the beginning with Avery and let the benefits of seeping in this knowledge mount. 15 minutes a week......Gotta go. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 15

By Maximiliano F Yofre I wasn’t able to find any information about the author.“I’ll Kill You Tomorrow” (1953) is a short story with a classic topic of the times: subtle, almost undetectable invasion/possession.Lorry Kane is young nurse working at a Maternity in the night shift, when she perceives that “something strange” take place at the nursery. She investigates and weird occurrences starts. It is a very readable and intelligent tale with the flavor of the ‘50s sci-fi shorts.Reviewed by Max Yofre.
