About the Author English author Daniel Defoe was at times a trader, political activist, criminal, spy and writer, and is considered to be one of England s first journalists. A prolific writer, Defoe is known to have used at least 198 pen names over the course of a career in which he produced more than five hundred written works. Defoe is best-known for his novels detailing the adventures of the castaway Robinson Crusoe, which helped establish and popularize the novel in eighteenth century England. In addition to Robinson Crusoe, Defoe penned other famous works including Captain Singleton, A Journal of the Plague Year, Captain Jack, Moll Flanders and Roxana. Defoe died in 1731.

WARNING: This is NOT the original text By Joshua Q Defoe helped to define the modern fictional novel when he wrote about the tales of Robinson Crusoe. The book has a strong religious theme, as was Defoe's intention. However, this version of the text censors out some of the language against what Defoe called the Papist Church (or the Roman Catholic Church) as well as some items which would be considered racially insensitive today (but leaving in much of it as well). I don't understand why this version leaves out some of those parts, as they completely change the story that Defoe intended. I'm not sure that Amazon knows these texts are censored (not the original) as there is no allusion to it in the book's description.[[...]]

An adventure, but different than you might expect By frumiousb The author of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe, is generally credited with being one of the first novel writers in the English language. The book is surely an influential one-- spawning countless imitations, derivations, and (in our era) reality-based television shows.It is billed, quite fairly, as an adventure story. However, it is a very different kind of adventure than the modern action-sequence laden book which readers today may expect. It is an adventure story, but one which centers primarily on mastery and morality.The morality is placed centrally in the book when Crusoe rejects the advice of his father to accept the happiness of the middle class life to which he was born. Against the wishes of his family, he runs off to sea to find adventure. It is not until Crusoe literally recreates a primitive approximation of that middle class life for himself on his island that he is freed.Crusoe is also a story about the ability of mankind to master his surroundings through hard work, patience, and Christianity. The combination of these three supports are what allow him to escape captivity in Africa, overcome the deadly obstacles on the island, and finally leave the island itself. His physical prowess and combat skills are significantly less important to his journey than the message of trust and persistance that the decades he spends on the island convey. While this message might need tempering for the modern reader, it is also inspirational and important to read.If the potential reader is not used to the diction of the time, the book itself may take some patience and persistance. It pays off, in the end, and should be an excellent book for the young teenager (or the not-so-young grown-up) interested in stories of adventure. The child who reads and enjoys My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George would probably be a good potential audience for Robinson Crusoe. For a good life-at-sea duo, you might consider pairing it with Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana.

Scribe After reading Glyn Williams' trenchant 'The Prize Of All The Oceans' I had an overwhelming desire to read this classic once again. I first read it when I was a mere 10 year old and it completely mesmerized me; I find that it still held the same power over me thirty years later. It is difficult to put this tale down once the title character becomes a castaway on the "island of despair" (as Crusoe refers to it) and he begins the battle against the odds to survive. Facing extreme tropical heat, torrential storms, a dreadful loneliness and the struggle to master some of the simplest of skills we take for granted Crusoe wages his one-man crusade for survival. Beginning his desolate existence steeped in woeful self-pity he slowly realizes through a series of trying circumstances, devotional reading of the Bible and finally relief from his isolated state that the experience proves to be one of reverie. In the process Crusoe becomes quite possibly the most inspirational figure to spring forth from the pages of literature.Though it is annually listed by literature scholars as one of the 100 finest works of fiction, today primarily adolescents read Defoe's enduring tale as part of their required reading for school; very few others rarely bother with this nearly three century old tale. 'Robinson Crusoe' it seems is a classic awaiting a renaissance of rediscovery by adults who regularly read for either leisure or as a part of continuing education. While the novel's approach to morality may seem a bit old fashioned by today's contemporary standards, the character's awakening to wisdom, inner strength and faith will inspire any reader of any age. Crusoe's ability to steel himself against the onslaught of natural elements, his own self doubts and finally a band of savages who discover his "island empire" should win over even the most jaded of us. We know from the beginning who did it, and the book is all about how they were brought to justice. The story concerns Nathan Maroney, a station agent for Adams Express, who is suspected of stealing $50,000 cash from his employer in two separate thefts, in 1859. Maroney is a very clever criminal, and it takes a team of detectives several months to corner him.The cat and mouse game between Maroney and his wife, on the one hand, and Pinkerton's detectives and spies on the other, is interesting enough in itself. The book is also provides a fascinating look into daily life in the US in the mid-nineteenth century, including the cultural divisions between north and south, the way the genders interacted, social mores, what rail travel was like, etc. Although the author had no intention of creating a cultural document, he couldn't help but do so in telling a story that spans several months, so many locations, and such a large number of characters.The book is also interesting for its description of Kate Warne, probably America's first female detective, and how she gained the confidence of Maroney's wife, who was hiding the money.As some other reviewers have noted, the plot, by the standards of today's commercial thrillers, doesn't exactly race along. But it moves well enough, and the characters are interesting enough to make you want to linger a while without just racing blindly to the next plot point. The book is well written, in what is, by 19th century standards, fairly straighforward prose.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This is an excellent book to study how our justice system worked in the mid 19th century. By D. Meyer This is an obviously an embellished story of one of Pinkerton’s first cases. I found it to be interesting in how he unwittingly portrays justice at that time. The reader will find he had no qualms about setting up a person to fulfill his mission. He obviously considered this poetic justice. I think in the context of those times, I would agree with him. While this is a self serving story I did find the way he accomplished his work amazing. The vernacular he uses is also amusing and rather “corny” to the modern reader, although this usage was used at that time. I am glad this “documentary” was not edited for the benefit of today’s reader.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Deserves all 5 stars By Dody Mitchell I wish to address the one star reviews. It is a free book without illustrations, but lovely all the same. It does have vocabulary that most people, that have had a poor education, may have trouble with as an adult. My own children would not have trouble with it though. The structure and format of the book is fine enough to understand. The stories are laid out fine enough to understand. It isn't perfect, but it is worth 5 stars for a free product. I would even pay for this if it had the illustrations in it and better formatting.That said, there are some really cute stories in here about the last sun beam and a little red house. I would prefer to have access to this book, warts and all, than not as some reviewers seem to prefer. I use my kindle mostly for free books that are public domain. As far as public domain books go, there are worse ones with worse formatting. I recommend this book for the patient that truly want to see what children in times past read.If you want something modern, go BUY it. If you want something and can make due without pretty pictures, especially since it is supposed to be a READING book, this one is fine for story time with the kids. Read a loud to them and watch as they smile when you make the little red house cry in your voice. I am truly saddened people can not appreciate writing for it's contents instead of the pictures it doesn't have.

They are rather heavy-handed with the Christian motifs and themes (even the "Norse" story was highly Christian), and the 'introduction' story was...kinda odd. It set up the rest of the tales in such a way to connect this book with other books by the author, but it had no real baring on the tales themselves, so you can feel free to skip it (or check out other books about Little Prudy like Little Prudy's Sister Susy or Little Prudy's Dotty Dimple!)Overall I thought this book was oddly charming, even though I usually don't care for the non-traditional fairy tale books. I'm not entirely sure if it was because the stories are actually *that* good, or if it's because they were bad enough that I found them hilarious, but they were enjoyable.The active Table of Contents is a chart, but it's short, so you can see all of it at once. It briefly covers the various, and many, Hapsburg sovereigns from their empire's formation in the 11th century through to the author's present day. I found the book very readable, and a different perspective on history, in that I got a sense of the nature of the people, their character, and their strengths and weaknesses as individuals. The book also discusses the Reformation, and relations between Catholics and Protestants, and later Calvinists, and how those relationships motivated behaviour.I've not found a ton of books on Austria-Hungary or the Hapsburgs, so I was happy to find this book.

Excellent book for someone who knows zilch about the history of Austria By A Customer Like most history books, this one dwells on "great leaders" from the perspective of the court historian. However, this does not make it a bad book. I found many insightful gems scattered throughout. I would recommend it to anyone who thinks they might be interrested in the history of the Austrian Empire.

The author is staunchly pro-Protestant but seems to save his greatest ire for the inability of Lutheran and Calvinists to cooperate.Fascinating to read a book written before the 1848 revolution.

The Typhoon Truce, 1970: Three Days in Vietnam when Nature Intervened in the War, by Robert F. Curtis

About the Author Robert Francis Curtis was born in Middletown, Ohio, in 1949, making him exactly the right age to be drafted for the Vietnam War. After dropping out of high school twice, he passed the general educational development exam, giving him enough educational qualifications to gain entry into the Army s Warrant Officer Candidate program. There he learned to fly, starting him on the path to a military career as an aviator in the Army, National Guard, Marine Corps, and as an exchange officer with the British Royal Navy. After service in Vietnam he attended the University of Kentucky, graduating with honor with a Bachelor s Degree in Political Science. Later, while serving at Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, DC, Robert completed a Master s Degree in Procurement and Acquisition Management at Webster University. His military awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and 23 Air Medals. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa while at the University of Kentucky. Robert is an FAA certified Commercial Pilot in both helicopters and gyroplanes. He has previously published articles in professional journals including the Marine Corps Gazette, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Aircrewman s Journal TACAN. Robert and his wife, Mariellen, reside in Exeter, New Hampshire.

Great friend, aviator and story teller, and now author extraordinaire. The book was great I had heard several of the stories from Bob personally, but the ending was a great surprise and a wonderful way to honor fallen comrades. If you love flying as I do and if you have an interest in the.Vietnam War this book will give you a very real inside look into the daily lives of the pilots and crews that flew in that conflict. If you just want to read an exciting book about the lives of soldiers and their sacrifice you will enjoy this book. If you just like a good adventure this book will fill the bill. Hope you all read and enjoy this book..

By merrittvox In his second book, Robert Curtis concentrates his clear, direct storytelling into a period of days in October, 1970. The plot is driven by the weather - aviators are wholly dependent on weather - so a typhoon in a tropical zone dictates all activity, personal and operational. I love Robert's style; he includes all the operational and tactical details of a mission delivered in very clear terms so that aviators and non-aviators alike can follow along. I also appreciate his straightforward approach to detailing the horrors of war. He keeps the hideous details very in the moment so the reader experiences them at the same time as his characters, and also moves on with them.This book will hold the interest of aviators, veterans, military history buffs and players of Call of Duty; this is a great book for young adults with an interest in military history. Eager for the next book!

Vivid accounts by a master story teller By Chad C Miller Vividly told by a talented author, this tale is a eye-opening look at daily life, trials and tribulations of art of flying helicopters in Vietnam. The accounts of daily life, young men dealing with the realties of war, flying and Uncle Sam are presented with the ring of truth that can only come from 'I was there'. With clear eye to detail and a dry sense of humor that leaks into the tales from time to time, the author shows in all it's raw reality what he and his comrades when through. The threads of all the stories woven throughout the fabric of the narrative slowly, almost imperceptibly weave to a conclusion that I never saw coming, and one that had me open-mouthed and a little misty.

In the 1950s, John Reber convinced many Californians that the best way to solve the state's water shortage problem was to dam up the San Francisco Bay. Against massive political pressure, Reber's opponents persuaded lawmakers that doing so would lead to disaster. They did this not by empirical measurement alone, but also through the construction of a model. Simulation and Similarity explains why this was a good strategy while simultaneously providing an account of modeling and idealization in modern scientific practice. Michael Weisberg focuses on concrete, mathematical, and computational models in his consideration of the nature of models, the practice of modeling, and nature of the relationship between models and real-world phenomena. In addition to a careful analysis of physical, computational, and mathematical models, Simulation and Similarity offers a novel account of the model/world relationship. Breaking with the dominant tradition, which favors the analysis of this relation through logical notions such as isomorphism, Weisberg instead presents a similarity-based account called weighted feature matching. This account is developed with an eye to understanding how modeling is actually practiced. Consequently, it takes into account the ways in which scientists' theoretical goals shape both the applications and the analyses of their models.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding By Irfan A. Alvi Simply put, this is the best book I've yet found on the philosophical aspects of modeling in science (and engineering). The writing is crystal clear and the book should be accessible to non-specialists, yet analytic rigor is also there for those who want it. The author covers uses, development, refinement, and validation of models in sufficient detail and depth to make the book of practical value, not just theoretical value. If you're a 'thinking' modeler (if you develop models, you should be!), this book is a must read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Models of Modelling - must read for scientists By Netzwerkerin This book is a revelation for anyone using models in a scientific way. It is the first philosophical book I could read without getting stuck at overly complicated sentences, or being hindered by the excessive use of discipline-specific jargon.Weisberg first defends his categorization of three kinds of models (concrete, mathematical, and computational models). He then makes clear that a model is composed of two things (its structure - the thing we normally equate with the model - and its construal). The construal defines 1) the relation between the model and the target system, 2) the intended scope of the model, and 3) its fidelity criteria, i.e., ways to quantify the question of whether the model is good enough to be applied. He then discusses a specific view of mathematical models, called fictions, and dismisses it. He quickly sketches the process of modelling against a given target system, and the three kinds of idealizations we often use in this process (Galilean idealization, minimalist idealization, and multiple models idealization). He also discusses the case, where a model is targetless and shows that it might still be beneficial even if it does not explain any phenomenon of a real-world system. Finally, he introduces a way to measure the goodness of fit of a model, and a way to analyze a model's robustness before he concludes the book with a 3 page summary.Reading the book was very relieving, as my intuition that we are sometimes too fast to apply models to situations where they are not appropriate, can be finally put in scientific terms, namely: in too many cases, the construal is not made explicit and then it can happen that a model is applied outside of its intended scope.I am currently putting bits and pieces of this book in all of my lectures, from "graph theory" to the "fundamentals of programming" to "Complex network analysis", "Formal models of complex systems", and others, because I think that we are sometimes speaking to much about "computers" and too little about "science".I recommend to start the book with the three page summary in the "Conclusion". Since Weisberg avoids using more specific jargon than absolutely necessary, it is well understandable and gives a first conclusive picture of the book. In his introductory pages, he starts with three examples of the three different model types and then developes the story based on these examples bit by bit.

Samuels I'm not usually one for philosophy of anything, but this treatise does raise some interesting points about the similarities and differences between analytical modeling, computer simulation and measurement techniques. The discussion of the San Francisco Bay model was fascinating. The comparison of analytical and agent-based approaches would be enhanced if the actual models were available on a CD for experimentation. These are issues I never really thought much about as an engineer; definitely worth reading if modeling & simulation is your thing.

About the Author Edith Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, known for such classics as The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and The Age of Innocence, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. A member of the New York elite, Wharton drew on her experiences as part of society to critique its inner workings and the conflict between personal desires and societal norms. Wharton died in 1937, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.

Her Third Collection By Dave_42 "The Descent of Man and Other Stories" is the third collection of short fiction from Edith Wharton and was published on April 30th of 1904. Oddly enough there are two versions of the collection which were published the same year. The Macmillan edition included 10 stories while the Scribner's edition only had 9 stories as it did not include "The Letter". The stories were also in a different order in the two editions. For purposes of this review, I am listing the stories in the order they were in the Macmillan edition. "The Descent of Man" - Published originally in "Scribner's Magazine" in March of 1904. Professor Linyard is a man of science who writes a book where he pretends to take the side of religion, expecting it to be understood as a satire of popular scientific books. When it is taken as serious, he goes along with it in order to provide better for his family, thus selling his principles time and time again."The Other Two" - Published originally in "Collier's Weekly" on February 13th of 1904. Mr. Waythorn has married Alice Haskett, who was married twice before and has a child, Lily, by her first marriage. When his business brings her second husband into their lives, and her first husband continues to be part of his daughter Lily's life, he initially becomes upset at the situation. However, he eventually realizes the position she is in and comes to accept the situation."Expiation" - Published originally in "Hearst's International-Cosmopolitan" in December of 1903. Mrs. Fetherel is a new author who manages to get her book published. She is also the niece of the Bishop of Ossining, whose own literary efforts have not sold well, thus preventing him from paying for needed fixing of the chantry window. When her book "Fast and Loose" is considered "harmless" by the critics, she gets her uncle to denounce it, thus improving the sales, and the chantry window is able to be constructed, thanks to a generous donation, by a woman who chooses to remain anonymous."The Lady's Maid's Bell" - Published originally in "Scribner's Magazine" in November of 1902. A ghost story, where Miss Hartley becomes the lady's maid to Mrs. Brympton, a woman who is a near-invalid. A previous maid, had died, and Miss Hartley sees and hear things which have driven those who have taken the job between out of the house within six months of accepting the position."The Mission of Jane" - Published originally in "Harper's Monthly" in December of 1902. Lethbury consents to adopting a child when his wife Alice insists. Their marriage was not going well, and Lethbury feels that Jane will keep his wife happy. Initially he is kept out of Jane's life, but as she grows up he is forced to participate more and be a part of both Jane and Alice's life."The Reckoning" - Published originally in "Harper's Magazine" in August of 1902. Clement Westall and his wife Julia have agreed on a different kind of marriage. Julia had been married before, and was allowed to walk away when she decided to. Thus, she wanted for both her and Clement to have the same ability. She is surprised when Clement exercises that option, forcing her to reflect back on what she had done to her first husband, John Arment."The Letter" - First published in "Harper's Magazine" in April of 1904. When Colonel Alington dies, the narrator reflects back on the one story he told that said the most about who he was, and the bravery of one woman and the sacrifice she was willing to make for Italy. This is my favourite story in this collection, one in which Edith Wharton very artfully mixes history, character, and story."The Dilettante" - Published originally in "Harper's Monthly" in December of 1903. After seeing Miss Ruth Gaynor off at the train station, Thursdale pays a call on Mrs. Vervain to discuss his previous visit which he and Miss Gaynor had paid to Mrs. Vervain. Mrs. Vervain tells him a story about how Miss Gaynor doesn't like the friendship between Thursdale and Mrs. Vervain."The Quicksand" - Published originally in "Harper's Magazine" in June of 1902. Mrs. Quentin is upset when her son Alan is rejected by Hope Fenno because of his owning a newspaper which is ruthless in its reporting. He asks her to go see Miss Fenno, but when she does so, she recognizes a bit of herself and remembers the sacrifice she had to make when she married as well as the kind of person her son is."A Venetian Night's Entertainment" - First published in "Scribner's Magazine" in December of 1903. An amusing story about Tony Bracknell and his first time in Venice as a sailor on a merchant ship.This is a very nice collection of stories, with a good amount of diversity in the subject matter and styles. Edith Wharton once again shows that she can write short fiction very well, and that she can use all aspects to create an engaging story which keeps the reader's interest. Not quite as good as the collection "Crucial Instances" in my opinion, but worthwhile nonetheless.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Other Two By Emily I only had to read The Other Two for my American Literature 2 class which is what I'll be doing a review on. I believe that this was a funny story due to the awkward circumstances of a man, Waythorn, being married to a woman, Alice, who has previously been married and divorced twice. Waythorn keeps getting thrown at her past husbands since Alice's daughter, Lily, was stricken with typhoid. He ends up seeing the first husband because he wants to visit his daughter and sees the second because he is forced to do business with him. All three men seem to be very polite and good natured so it makes you question why Alice was divorced twice before marrying Waythorn. The only reason I give it a four is because the ending left me completely unsatisfied, as did it for the rest of my class. It does make you want more but the harsh reality is that there is no more after The Other Two so you're forced to contemplate you're own ending!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's by Balzac! By Amazon Customer Looking for a biography of Catherine De Medici, I was astonished to find this one, written by Balzac! Since he's one of my favorite authors, I bought it immediately. It is an interesting read, but very early in my read, I realized that it didn't mean too much if I didn't already know the story of Catherine's life and what the French people thought of her during her lifetime and shortly thereafter. So I stopped and read a recent (and more complete) biography of her so I would know what he's referring to. After that, I was able to follow along quite well. Mostly Balzac is trying to dispel some of the slanders told about her, which people of his time may have believed if they had no other source of information about her. I'm not sure I would call this a biography, since it doesn't cover Catherine's entire life. Balzac covers her time as queen and queen mother, which I have to admit is the most important part of her life. This isn't as much fun as Balzac's fiction, but it is enjoyable and reasonably accurate.

'as calculating and cold as Reason itself' By sally tarbox I read this immediately after completing Frieda's excellent biography of Catherine de Medici and was glad to have a familiarity with her life while reading this. This is not another biography, however, nor a treatise on the lady.The first (main) part of the book is a narrative of an idealistic young Calvinist, Christophe Lecamus, who is a willing participant in the Prince de Conde's plan to gain access to Catherine with communications from the Protestant faction. I found this section really brought history to life from Balzac's descriptions of 16th century Paris to the personalities at court. Certainly his take on some situations is vastly different from that of Frieda; he imagines huge antipathy between Catherine and her young daughter-in-law Mary (later Queen of Scots) whereas Frieda describes a warm relationship. Similarly Catherine's determination to remove Mary (and her hated Guise relatives) causes her to refuse her son a life-saving trepanning operation. Frieda considers it absurd propaganda that she would have let her son die. Who knows?The second piece is set a little later - Catherine's second son, Charles IX, is now on the throne, an unwell and unhealthy young man, ever distrustful of his mother and her poisons. He brings in her alchemists, the Ruggieris, for questioning. I found the discussion on their craft somewhat over my head but the historic picture of this king was fascinating.Third and finally we are transported to an aristocratic party in 1786. One guest claims to have seen and debated with Catherine over the events in her life. She sums up 'to leave two hostile principles at work in a government with nothing to balance them...is sowing the seed of revolution' and continues 'a revolution which is still progressing and which you may achieve.Yes, YOU, who hear me.'Only in the last sentence is it revealed that the two guests are Robespierre and Marat.Very interesting read, totally interesting to any history book on the subject

About the Author Jiddu Krishnamurti lived from 1895 to 1986, and is regarded as one of the greatest philosophical and spiritual figures of the twentieth century. He was first discovered by the Theosophists on a beach in South India in 1910 at the age of 13 and was educated to be the new World Teacher for the ages. Then he took an extraordinary turn. In 1929, at one of the enormous annual European gatherings of the Theosophists in Holland, he announced his decision to step down from any formal role to promote him as a World Teacher, resigned as figure head of the Theosophists, and cut all ties to any notion of a religious or spiritual organization.Krishnamurti claimed no allegiance to any caste, nationality or religion and was bound by no tradition. His purpose was to set humankind unconditionally free from the destructive limitations of a conditioned mind. For nearly sixty years, he traveled the world and spoke spontaneously to large audiences until the end of his life in 1986 at the age of 90. He had no permanent home, but when not traveling, he often stayed in Ojai, California, Brockwood Park, England, and in Chennai, India. In his talks, he pointed out to people the need to transform themselves through self knowledge, by being aware of the subtleties of their thoughts and feelings in daily life, and how this movement can be observed through the mirror of relationship.

Krishnamurti was still under the influence of the Theosophical Society is not by him.Note this book is an early work which is now out of copyright and has become part of the public domain. Notice from the copyright line that there are no Krishnamurti or even Theosophical entities involved. BiblioLife, LLC has just taken it over, copyrighted it, and is now selling what was just a pamphlet to begin with.In fact, Krishnamurti would later deny having written it. In 1929 he dissolved The Order of the Star in the East, the Theosophical branch which had been founded in 1911 to proclaim the coming of the World Teacher, whom they felt was to be incarnated in Krishnamurti. Most interesting on that topic is J. Krishnamurti's dissolution speech, and that is free to read at jkrishnamurti.org (the official repository of the authentic teachings of J. Krishnamurti) together with important works by Krishnamurti on education, which gave rise to the schools he founded on three continents.

I used to watch him on TV as he made his presentations to the masses sitting outside under the trees in California. A very compelling speaker with a serious message to help us recognize that desire is what gets us in so much trouble.

The Mark of the Beast By A Customer This book, set in England and Israel during the early 1900's, covers the topic of the world becoming a one economic, one religion system all based out of the rebuilt Babylon. If one is reading the current "Left Behind" series, you will notice several similiar styles. An example would be the name of the World Ruler, Apleon in this book while the Left Behind series calls him Appolyon. This book also contains poetry and hymn texts, as well as Scripture quotes to cover the topic. The author creates a picture that is very real and what would happen should the world lose the influence of the Church and the Third person of the Trinity.

In the Twinkling of an Eye By Judy Chastain This "can't put it down" book has a delightful story line and a sobering message that should not be ignored! A line from the publisher's note says: "It is written in a style so fascinating that young and old will read it with almost breathless interest from start to finish."! We often don't think about "the Lord's near return" and this book is a reminder: joyfully in the knowledge of being with Christ eternally, and oh, so soberly for those who will be left behind. I'm looking forward to sharing this book, as an encouragement to those who are in Christ and as an eye-opener to those who are not! There is a sequel that I can't wait to read -however it is out of print so I hope your prayers will be with me in my search!

Fascinating first novel of Edith Wharton By Arneblaze This just misses being a novella, as it is quite short, but it shows Wharton in her element at the very start of her literary career, it being her first novel. The influence of her friend Henry James' novella, The Aspern Papers, is evident in her story of a young man tempted to sell love letters sent to him by a famous author for whom he did not care, in order to make enough money to marry the woman he loves. The psychological miasma he is thrown into due to his guilt and fear of exposure balance his slow maturation in realizing his betrayal of the woman who loved him first.Superb character study and a fast read - this edition is nicely printed and is most readable.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Quick And Enjoyable By Dave_42 "The Touchstone" is Edith Wharton's second book and it was published in 1900. It was also published under the title "A Gift From The Grave". Her previous literary effort was a collection of short stories titled "The Greater Inclination" and this is a longer story, roughly what we would today call a novella. The author takes an interesting premise, and creates an engaging story which is easy to read and flows quickly. The reader doesn't want to put this book down.The premise of the story is that a man (Glennard) of limited means is looking for a way to earn money so that he can afford to marry the woman he loves (Alexa Trent). Earlier in his life, he was loved by Mrs. Aubyn, who has become a famous author and since died. Thus he is in possession of the letters she wrote him, and due to her fame he could publish them, but that would not be proper in his mind, and he feels that he would not be worthy of Alexa Trent if he did such a thing.Of course, the reader immediately knows that he is going to have to do this unthinkable thing, and the interesting part of the story is how it affects Glennard and his relationship with Alexa Trent, and with Flemel, the friend from whom he seeks the advice initially, and who helps him get the letters published. Glennard destroys one relationship, and nearly destroys the other, and often lashes out irrationally when the book is discussed. He is constantly trying to figure out who knows, and who Flemel might have told, and if his wife has figured it out, even when he tries to make it obvious that he has done the deed.It is an interesting story about the turmoil which people go through when circumstances force them to act in a way which they wouldn't ordinarily do. Many people today might not understand why Glennard is even troubled by the idea of publishing the correspondence of someone who has passed on, but it certainly works well for the period in which it was written. This is even better than her first book, though I don't think it merits five stars.

Surprisingly Contemporary - 100 years ahead of its time By A Customer Because I am adapting this novella for Warner Bros as a feature film, I'm interested in hearing what readers have to say about it. This is Wharton's first novella, written at a time when she was still developing her craft as a writer; the story can appear woefully underwritten. Still, the story is mesmerizing and dangerous, a Faustian tale of betrayal, greed and the consequences paid, and the more often I read through it, the more hidden meanings emerge. When you read it, think of the lover who sold Princess Diana's first secrets of their affair to the tabloids, and the consequences since. What ever happened to that man? Perhaps, like Stephen Glennard in "The Touchstone", he has gone mad from guilt, which, ironically enough, might prove he has a conscious after all.
