NYT and WSJ bestselling author Charlene Li guides business leaders deeper than ever before into the uncomfortable and ever-changing terrain of the digital era Technology has revolutionized the very idea and nature of relationships between leaders and their followers. Yet, many leaders remain stuck at arms-length from those they lead and serve, relying on specialized teams to interact with customers, their direct reports to keep tabs on how employees are doing, and on the digital natives in their organization to stay abreast of new technologies. Now, in The Engaged Leader: A Strategy for Your Digital Transformation, Li helps leaders adapt to the demands, and opportunities of digital leadership. To be a true digital leader requires a metamorphosis: you must connect directly by listening, sharing, and engaging using digital technologies. This metamorphosis is not easy, comfortable, or painless—if your palms aren’t sweaty or your stomach isn’t churning, then you probably aren’t really practicing digital leadership. The Engaged Leader addresses why leaders need to master a new way of developing relationships, which begins by stepping out of traditional hierarchies; how to listen at scale, share to shape, and engage to transform; the art of making this transformative mind shift; and the science of applying the right tools to meet your strategic goals. This transformation is not optional. Those who choose not to make this change will be abandoned for those who inspire people to follow them. The Engaged Leader provides leaders with the skills and confidence they need to transform their leadership, and in turn, their organizations. The Engaged Leader also provides guidance to institutions—businesses, communities, and schools—on how to develop and nurture digital leadership. It is a must read for anyone who values a deeper connection between leaders and those they serve.

By Kelly Vandever If you’re looking for a lecture on why you’re old-fashioned and need to get with the times, you won’t find it here. What you will find are practical, real-world examples of why you as a leader should consider engaging in the world of digital and how to approach it in a way that’s both strategic and avoids adding more than is necessary to your already overloaded plate.Charlene Li’s non-judgmental, realistic approach serves the leadership executive well. Not only does she provide specific examples of how other executives have approached their journey, but she offers an example worksheet with step-by-step samples of how to tie your specific strategic goals with your approach to connecting with customers and employees through digital means. The keys lie in establishing the goals and measurements, then considering how the leader will (1) listen to scale to employees and the market, (2) share to shape the opinions of customers and employees, and (3) engage to transform company culture and the relationship of organizations to the people who work there and the people they serve. She walks through three specific goal samples (attracting and retaining the best people, growing market share in a target market, creating an extraordinary experience customers) and articulates how leaders can listen to scale, share to shape and engage to transform in the context of those specific goals. You can’t help but see yourself in the examples and case studies Li provides. The Engaged Leader is a quick read which provides powerful, immediately usable tactics to reach strategic goals and better connect with the people who make an organization work — their employees and their customers.

Li challenges leaders to stop focusing on the best way to respond to online conversations and instead By Kristin Huntley If the idea of being digitally transformed sounds intimidating to you, don't worry. Charlene Li, founder and CEO of Altimeter Group, and social media consultant to companies setting the standards for successful social media engagement [Southwest Airlines, Adobe, Google, Cisco, etc.] has given you the secret sauce for digital engagement in her new book, The Engaged Leader: A Strategy for Transformation.Every business leader and marketer ought to familiarize themselves with the research published by Altimeter Group, as it is the backbone of their successful consulting partnerships with top industries, and it's powerful information in the hands of leaders who recognize having a strategy for digital engagement is no longer an option. Today, every industry must come to terms with the conversational world we're living in, and those conversations, by both employees and customers, are happening online. In her 93-page guide, Li challenges leaders to stop focusing on the best way to respond to online conversations and instead, focus on becoming engaged themselves. In Engaged Leaders, Li delivers a four-part strategy through stories and tools for leaders, effectively demonstrating what the journey to engaged leadership looks like. She acknowledges that for some leaders, embracing digital transformation will begin with a grieving process. Li offers a depth of insight, based on her research and experiences coaching top executives, for helping leaders identify and move through the stages of grief. The book also includes tips for teams supporting leaders, and offers effective strategies for "leading up" on the journey to digital transformation. The Engaged Leader is a small, but powerful guide and I can't recommend it enough to leaders everywhere who want to learn at the feet of someone who understands both leadership and technology. You might expect a book from a CEO and Chief Analyst of a research organization to be packed with statistics and citations, but that's not what The Engaged Leader is about. Instead, Charlene Li serves as a reassuring and confident guide for leaders who recognize their ability to lead in the digital space is critical to moving their companies forward. The Engaged Leader should be on the shelf of every business owner and marketing professional.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. How and why engaged leaders transform themselves so that they can transform their organizations By Robert Morris Recent research by highly reputable firms such as Gallup and Towers Watson indicates that, on average, less than 30% who comprise the workforce in a U.S. company are actively and positively engaged; the others are either passively engaged ("mailing it in") or actively disengaged, doing whatever they can to undermine the success of their company.Whatever their size and nature may be, all organizations need effective leadership at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. According to Charlene Li, the challenges for leaders today are daunting. "First, power and influence have decoupled from title and pay grade, and many people are at a loss as to how to proceed. The hierarchies developed at the dawn of the industrial age, and which are still common today, were done so to create efficiency and scale...But in our modern, digitally connected world, the need for efficiency pales compared with the need for speed, innovation, and change."The situation is exacerbated by traditional middle managers who are resistant to change, demonstrating what James O'Toole so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." Because middle managers are located below the C-suite and the front lines, "they abhor the new openness. They see top executives going around them to talk with their direct reports. They feel they are losing control, so many fight these changes tooth and nail."More often than not, those who defend an organization's status quo are the same people who challenged the previous status quo and replaced those who defended it. Li then suggests a third challenge, a daunting one indeed: A lack of ownership among leaders struggling to see the upside of the digital landscape. So, "why are so many CEOs and business leaders still trying to figure it out and find the upside? Because many still believe it's someone else's job. They don't think they have the skills or expertise to tap into the digital and social tools. So they back off," as do their organizations.Li wrote this book in response to these challenges. Her primary objective is to suggest and explain a strategy for digital transformation that almost any organization can adopt. These are among the dozens of passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of her coverage:o Backing Off -- It's Not an Option (Pages 9-13)o Becoming an Engaged Leader -- Strategy Begins with a Plan (18-20)o A New Mind-Set for Listening, and The Art of Listening (23-28)o Share to Shape (36-39)o The Sharing Shift -- From Scarcity to Abundance (39-42)o The Art of Sharing (42-47)o The Science of Sharing (47-52)o Why Engagement Transforms Leaders -- and Their Organizations (57-59)o Changing Minds About Engagement (59-61)o Digital Engagement Strategy: Art and Science Overlap 62-79)o Change Is a Process (83-92)To repeat, whatever their size and nature may be, all organizations need effective leadership at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. In other words, leaders who are positively and productively engaged are committed to a never-ending process of transforming their organization so that it can respond much more effectively to challenges such as those Charlene Li identifies. When asked to explain the extraordinary success of Southwest Airlines, its then chairman and CEO, Herb Kelleher replied, "We take great care of our people, they take great care of our customers, and our customers take great care of our shareholders."In a comparable manner, engaged leaders energize a workforce by listening at scale, sharing to shape, and engaging to transform. Then together, in collaboration, they transform their organization. In this context, I am again reminded of my favorite passage in Lao-tse's Tao Te Ching:"Learn from the peoplePlan with the peopleBegin with what they haveBuild on what they knowOf the best leadersWhen the task is accomplishedThe people will remarkWe have done it ourselves."

I put the book down a couple times, but eventually came back to it (I'm stubborn). One of the probelms with the early part of the story is there aren't any characters you can really warm up to. However, the characters do slowly emerge in ways that although you might not want to live next door to any, you do begin to care about what will happen to them. The later third of the book becomes a page-turner.The book's finest points are the vivid descriptions of locations, point of time, and ultimately the flawed dark but seemingly real characters.I'd read another book by this author.

Thus here I will merely say, I had hoped Altsheler would be an Americanized version of Henty. However, he is not. He writes with a perspective which may make conservative parents uncomfortable - not because they wish to avoid his somewhat mystic perspective, but because they prefer not to read their children a 'story' (which by its very nature makes us enter into the events as reality) which addresses attempts to present this viewpoint a the truth.

I read some of the books in this series as a kid fifty years ago. What a thrill to find the series, and other books by Altsheller on Amazon, for free, and reading the stories again on a Kindle. Excellent series. Now for the Civil War series.

"The Art of Public Speaking is So Simple That it is Difficult" By customer Kleiser's Successful Methods of Public Speaking is nearly a century old, but still contains much to recommend it. It can be freely downloaded as an electronic file from Project Gutenberg, or you can buy this paper copy if you like to hold books in your hands.WHY BOTHER READING ABOUT OLD SPEECHES?---------------------------------The speeches themselves contain many powerful argumentative strategies and eloquent turns of phrase. Kleiser's anecdotes about the speakers are inspiring as well. Some Americans are mentioned, but most of the names will be familiar from British history. Here is an example of an anecdote:Edmund Burke recommended debate as one of the best means for developingfacility and power in public speaking. Himself a master of debate, hesaid, "He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens ourskill. Our antagonist is our helper. This amiable conflict withdifficulty obliges us to have an intimate acquaintance with our subject, and compels us to consider it in all its relations. It will not sufferus to be superficial." Burke, like all great orators, believed in premeditation, and always wrote and corrected his speeches with fastidious care. While such men knew that inspiration might come at the moment of speaking, they preferred to base their chances of success upon painstaking preparation.Kleiser also makes substantive comments on the speeches themselves. Here is one example:John Quincy Adams, in his speech on "The Life and Character ofLafayette," gives us a fine example of elevated and serious-mindedutterance. The following extract from this speech can be studied withprofit. Particularly note the use of sustained sentences, and the happycollocation of words. The concluding paragraph should be closelyexamined as a study in impressive climax.SUMMARY---------------------------------This book is an inexpensive way to get a hold of a great piece of scholarship. Let's face it. Unless you have a Kindle or other such device, you probably won't actually read through the electronic version on your computer screen. This can profitably be read with Kleiser's other works(see my review for Phrases for Public Speakers and Paragraphs for Study).

Good because of Hildebrandt's illustration By wiredweird - but I found the story weak and scattered. The pictures split between pencil sketches and incredible paintings. The sketches are good, but the paintings are everything I hope for in Hildebrandt's work. They capture draftmanship, color, expression, and light in a wonderul balance. The story goes back to 1900 or so (the only clue is that the author died in 1920, about age 60). A small boy follows a magical being through worlds of fantasy and fairy tale, learns to believe in the unbelievable, and wakes to find that it was all a dream. It's been done before, it will be done again, and it can be good, but this just didn't engage me. The changes were so frequent and abrupt that it was easy to skip a cog. If you read this to a small child, though, the brief vignettes may suit the brief attention span.Four stars - all for the illustration. It would have been 5 if there were more samples of Hildebrandt's art, or maybe if a kid had been there to advise me on the proper reading of this story.//wiredweird

"[...] At this time the widow Staubach was a woman not much over forty years of age; and though it can hardly be said she was comely, yet she was not without a certain prettiness which might have charms in the judgment of Herr Steinmarc. She was very thin, and her face was pale, and here and there was the beginning of a wrinkle telling as much of trouble as of years; but her eyes were bright and clear, and her smooth hair, of which but the edge was allowed to be seen beneath her cap, was of as rich a brown as when she had married Gasper Staubach, now more than twenty years ago; and her teeth were white and perfect, and the oval of her face had not been impaired by time, and her step, though slow, was light and firm, and her voice, though sad, was low[...]".

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. An Overweighted Romance By E. T. Veal Appearing anonymously as "By the Author of Nina Balatka", "Linda Tressel" was the second and last installment in Anthony Trollope's attempt to establish an alternative literary persona that could deviate from the Trollopian staples (not that the deviation was very startling; maidens urged to marry men whom they don't love are not exactly an unknown subject to our author).Like the earlier book, "Linda" takes place in a foreign city that the author had recently visited, in this case Nuremberg, and deals with the effect of religious bigotry on love and marriage. This time, instead of violently opposing a union, the bigoted aunt is trying to promote one, and the heroine struggles to escape into either spinsterhood or the arms of a more acceptable lover than the middle-aged boor who has been picked out for her.The personae of "Linda Tressel" - all odd ducks except for Linda herself - belong to comedy, and a work in that vein might have succeeded. Trollope chose, however, to write a tale that becomes progressively grimmer, eventually toppling the lightweight characters. The book was not a total failure. It drew praise from Henry James (who guessed the author's identity from stylistic clues) and has both lively and pathetic moments. On the whole, though, one does not, after putting it down, feel deep regret that the "alternative Trollope" had no further literary career.

3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It's un-Trollopean alright! By John S. I could see where this book might have appealed to a Victorian audience; as a modern reader, I found it tough going, though not as much so as much "Alice Dugdale" - a real yawner. The supporting characters carry the story pretty much, but I could've used a bit more mouth-foaming zealotry from the aunt to jazz it up even more.

Moods, by Louisa May Alcott

Review "Like her later works for children, Alcott's first novel is well and imaginatively written, highly moralistic, unlikely, and moving." -- The Antioch Review

From the Back Cover Moods, Louisa May Alcott's first novel, was published in 1864, four years before the best-selling Little Women. The novel unconventionally presents a "little woman" a true-hearted abolitionist spinster, and a fallen Cuban beauty, their lives intersecting in Alcott's first major depiction of the "woman problem." Sylvia Yule, the heroine of Moods, is a passionate tomboy who yearns for adventure, The novel opens as she embarks on a river camping trip with her brother and his two friends, both of whom fall in love with her. These rival suitors, close friends, are modeled on Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Aroused, but still "moody" and inexperienced, Sylvia marries the wrong man. In the rest of the novel, Alcott attempts to resolve the dilemma she has created and leaves her readers asking whether, in fact, there is a place for a woman such as Sylvia in a man's world. In 1882, eighteen years after the original publication, Alcott revised and republished the novel. Her own literary success and the changes she helped forge in women's lives now allowed her heroine to meet, as Alcott said, "a wiser if less romantic fate than in the former edition." This new volume contains the complete text of the 1864 Moods and Alcott's revisions for the 1882 version, along with explanatory notes by the editor.

About the Author American novelist Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel Little Women, and its sequels Little Men and Jo s Boys. The daughter of noted transcendentalist and educator Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, Alcott was an active abolitionist and feminist, and the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Schooled mainly by her father, Alcott and her three sisters also received lessons from such notables as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. Alcott penned her first book, Flower Fables, for Emerson s daughter, Ellen. Before gaining critical success for her children s fiction, Alcott wrote several passionate adult novels using the pen name A. M. Barnard, including A Long Fatal Love Chase and Punishment. Alcott s literary career spanned more than 40 years, and she wrote more than 30 books before her death in 1888.

It was also her attempt at serious literary recognition. Its intertexualities with the Transcendentalists, particularly Thoreau and Marget Fuller, make it an important book, as does its serious examination of a taboo subject in the 1860s: marriage and divorce. Although Alcott was not satisfied with the book, due to the many cuts required by her publisher, Moods exhibits a very ambitious Alcott finding her voice as a writer and addressing the difficult and controversial subjects with which women were wrestling. Alcott's first novel was influenced by Jane Eyre and The Scarlet Letter and bears reading alongside those two classics.

Better than its repuatation suggests By Shannon Brown I was basically forced to read this novel for a college survey course in American Romanticism. I had read 'Little Women' in high school and didn't think much of it. Too morally heavy-handed and contrived and not entertaining at all. 'Moods' suprised me. The same criticisms apply, but I did find the book a pleasure to read. The criticisms that the book places against the society of the times about women's behavioral expectations, while not exactly revolutionary, were well thought out and not as in-your-face as the messages found in 'Little Women'. The characters are not as one dimensional as in 'Little Women' and I thought Sylvia's dilemna was belieavable. Like I said before, I was suprised at how much I liked the book.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Interesting read By LucieBlue I really enjoyed reading this, being one of the author's first novels. I laughed quite a bit, although the novel is not intended to be funny, because the characters and the plot are so hilariously overdramatic and unrealistic. It really reads like a first novel of a very passionate, young, idealistic, and romantic girl. She obviously had, at this point in her life, some odd and naive ideas about the meaning of love and the way people actually do live and love.Read this if you love LMA, not if you are looking for excellent plot and character.

And I can say now it's still enjoyable, despite a few quirks of dialogue and other uses we now consider old-fashioned.Hough knew the people and land whereof he wrote, having living the pioneer life himself in New Mexico and as an avid outdoorsman throughout the west. Set in the late 1840s just before the California gold rush (which actually plays a vital role in the plot), the book tells of two wagon caravans bound for Oregon and the conflict which divides them because of a love triangle. Indian fights, buffalo hunts, dangerous river crossings and other dangers of the trail add to a gripping and entertaining read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Good book for settings, descriptions, and trail flavor By Voracious Reader I mainly read the book for research I'm doing on the Oregon Trail. Although this is a work of fiction, I found some very usuable information. For me, reading the novel was quicker than reading a history book, even though I've used plenty of them, too. The story was a little unreasonable, and I don't think Hough had a very high regard for women, since he talks about one lying as all women were apt to do. Still, the story is one of adventure and romance. The descriptions have dated vocabulary, but are nicely done, and this adds to the understanding of the times.

Granular systems arise in a variety of geological and industrial settings, from landslides, avalanches, and erosion to agricultural grains and pharmaceutical powders. Understanding the underlying physics that governs their behavior is the key to developing effective handling and transport mechanisms as well as appropriate environmental policies.

Handbook of Granular Materials presents foundational techniques used to investigate granular systems, examples of their use in contemporary research, and extensions to granular-like systems that greatly expand the realm of study. The book provides guidance on how to conduct research in granular materials and explores promising directions for new research.

The first several chapters cover various methods used by contemporary researchers to investigate granular materials. Subsequent chapters delve into broader themes of investigation, focusing on results rather than methodology. The final chapters describe three extended systems of granular media: suspensions, emulsions and foams, and colloids.

Josiah Sutton was convicted of rape. He was five inches shorter and 65 pounds lighter than the suspect described by the victim, but at trial a lab analyst testified that his DNA was found at the crime scene. His case looked like many others—arrest, swab, match, conviction. But there was just one problem—Sutton was innocent. We think of DNA forensics as an infallible science that catches the bad guys and exonerates the innocent. But when the science goes rogue, it can lead to a gross miscarriage of justice. Erin Murphy exposes the dark side of forensic DNA testing: crime labs that receive little oversight and produce inconsistent results; prosecutors who push to test smaller and poorer-quality samples, inviting error and bias; law-enforcement officers who compile massive, unregulated, and racially skewed DNA databases; and industry lobbyists who push policies of “stop and spit.”DNA testing is rightly seen as a transformative technological breakthrough, but we should be wary of placing such a powerful weapon in the hands of the same broken criminal justice system that has produced mass incarceration, privileged government interests over personal privacy, and all too often enforced the law in a biased or unjust manner. Inside the Cell exposes the truth about forensic DNA, and shows us what it will take to harness the power of genetic identification in service of accuracy and fairness.

Inside the Cell: The Dark Side of Forensic DNA, by Erin E. Murphy

Review “The book is full of cases and examples that propel Murphy's discussion forward and will no doubt unsettle the average citizen. Thankfully she also provides actionable recommendations for policy changes in a legal system that so far has little to say about the collection and uses of DNA.” –Publishers Weekly“A specialized work that will appeal to attorneys, investigators, crime writers, and others on the frontiers of forensic DNA laws and technologies.” –Kirkus Reviews“This brilliant, accessible, and extremely important book by one of our foremost scholars has a timely message: Without disputing its transformative impact, Murphy argues that DNA testing is not a panacea for the criminal justice system or forensic scientists. Murphy provides a balanced, thoughtful, and essential roadmap to a more democratic future. A must-read.” —Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, cofounders, the Innocence Project

From the Back Cover IS FORENSIC DNA THE NEXT FRONTIER OF GOVERNMENT SURVEILLANCE?Current criminal justice policies have emboldened a system of mass incarceration, characterized by assembly-line justice, abuse of official power, racial and socioeconomic inequality, and unacceptable rates of wrongful conviction. Inside the Cell probes the scientific, statistical, legal, and ethical challenges presented by forensic DNA testing and explains how:- DNA analysis is highly subjective, given the poor quality of many crime scene samples- Crime labs operate with less oversight than your local nail salon- DNA statistics can mislead jurors about the probability of a match- Traces of DNA appear in places that a person never touched or visited- “Stop and spit” might be the new “stop and frisk”- Police use tricks to sneak DNA samples from discarded items- DNA databases are racially skewed, and current policies only aggravate that inequality- DNA tests uncover genetic traits beyond just useless “junk”- Police maintain “rogue” databases unregulated by law

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Writing is uneven....but provides important food for thought By The Rotifer I saw the comment on this book made by Martin Tracey and thought twice about purchasing the book. I went ahead and purchase it. I am about half way through it as I write this comment. I was put off by the dismissiveness of Dr. Tracey's comment. I did a Google search on him and discovered that he is a molecular biologist at Florida International University and is quite knowledgible about techniques for sequencing and characterizing DNA. I also know a bit about these techniques myself and about calculating probabilities. That said, I see merit in Dr. Tracey's comment. But I also see merit in the discussion presented the author Erin Murphy. Dr. Tracey's comment is directed towards a surprise experienced by an analysts in the Arizona state crime laboratory. The analysts found that two DNA profiles in the crime lab's DNA database matched at nine places, even though these individuals were unrelated to each other. A further examination of the database revealed 122 sets of such 9-point matches. Dr. Tracey writes that Prof Murphy "ignorantly assumes that the 1 in N odds for a random match to one person, are the same as looking form matches in the entire data base." His interpretation of what Prof. Murphy did is incorrect. Prof Murphy discussion later in the chapter shows that she is well aware of the differences in the probability that a database will contain a match to a given individual versus the probability of finding matches when all profiles in the database are compared against each other. She does this by mentioning the "birthday problem". The birthday problem supposes you are in a group of 25 people. There is about 1 chance in 15 that someone in that group will share your birthday, but there is a very high probability, that two random people in that group will have the same birthday. (In any group of 25 people, there are 300 sets of birthdate comparisons that can be done between any two random people in the group.)I agree with Dr. Tracey's calculation that in the Arizona Crime Lab Database, there are 2 billion possible comparisons of the DNA profiles between two individuals. And he raises a legitimate question regarding whether it would be unusual to find some matches between profiles. But how many should one expect. Prof. Murphy states that 122 such matches were eventually found. She also states that the probability of finding a random match of two profiles from non-Hispanic whites was estimated at 1 in 754 million. The random match probability between two African Americans was estimated at 1 in 561 billion and between two Southwest Hispanics at 1 in 113 trillion. Given these three estimates of random probability matches, a then perhaps one could expect to find within that database, at most, maybe 3 or 4 matches....WELL SHORT OF 122. One explanation is that the occurrence of particular DNA markers is not as random as the people calculating the probabilities assume. That is, there may be significant correlation in the occurrence of certain markers, and if this correlation is not properly represented in the calculation of probabilities of a match, the calculation gives a misleading result. I cannot agree with Dr. Tracey that the discussion of the Arizona database is silly. Quite the opposite, I find it flags a serious problem and one that has the potential to result in many, many injustices.I do find the book uneven. For example, Prof. Murphy takes great pains to explain the methodology of DNA typing at a level that a non-technical person can understand. In my view she fails at that effort. But the basic thrust of the book is to argue that the powerfulness of DNA typing is often oversold. She is arguing that the risk of convicting the innocent is much higher than the general public has been led to believe. She cites errors committed in laboratories that have led to their being shut down. She cites failures to follow protocols when adding DNA profiles to databases. She cites the ambiguities that often occur when trying to tease out DNA profiles from samples that contain a mixture of DNA. She cites the persistence of DNA in the environment that can cause confusion as to when the DNA found in a sample was actually left behind. To illustrate this point, she discusses a murder case in which a DNA profile was recovered from a crime scene sample was matched to someone who had been dead for several years. The dead individual was later determined to have been involved in the construction of the building. Then there is the problem of match probabilities that I tried to illustrate above, coupled with the use of software to calculate the probabilities, where the algortihm used to do the calculation is proprietary and is therefore unavailable to mathematicians/statisticians who might want to verify as to whether the software is making correct calculations.Despite all these issues, Prof. Murphy does not argue that we should throw out DNA evidence. Rather, she argues that we need to have better standards on its interpretation, and we need to reconsider how to calculate the probability that the DNA profile found from a crime scene sample would match that off the defendant on trial. Sometimes Prof. Murphy is inelegant in her discussion. But in my view her central argument has great merit and needs further exploration.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Revelation By N. Nothnagle I admit that prior to reading this I accepted DNA results pretty much without question. This book made my hair stand on end and yours will, too. I had no idea just how much can go wrong and how much subjectivity is involved in the interpretation of DNA findings. Very well laid out and a must read if you rely on DNA results of any sort.

8 of 12 people found the following review helpful. There's only one thing better than the truth...the whole truth. By Amazon Customer After reading this book I can see why some people in the forensics industry would want to lash out with supposed "science" and "math" to discredit this book. Not surprising. They've used the tiny bit of "science" they learned online at University of Phoenix to dupe juries into arriving at false conclusions resulting in thousands of wrongful convictions for years. This book is not only an accurate depiction of the science behind forensics but also a very surprising accurate depiction of how forensics are actually applied in the real world. There's only one thing better than the truth and that is the whole truth. That's what I got from reading this book.

This book explores problems and issues that have emerged in national and international discussion of policies to address climate change. It concludes that every solution put forward by the Un and activists poses more problems than might ever emerge from the marginal human impact on natural climate change. Rather than mitigation, governments should focus on adaptation. As is, climate change discussions have become captive of a utopian agenda that is using climate change as a stalking horse to drive alarm in the hope that it will convince governments to act.

By Chris Aves Dr. Helena S. Aves“Hubris: The Troubling Science, Economics, and Politics of Climate Change” by Michael Hart is a superbscholarly analysis of an enormous amount of data on the subject of Climate Change, a topic that hasdominated the news for the last decade. The discussions presented deal with the political, economic andscientific elements that are central to this complex issue. I must admit it took me some time to reviewand digest the amazing amount of data and citations presented in this 500+ page volume, a work thattook a decade to construct.I am a geologist and have been studying this topic for over six years in a non-official capacity and amwell aware of many of the key scientific topics Mr. Hart references. It is not often that one comes acrossa book that encapsulates all that is currently recognized as essential to understanding the topic ofanthropogenic carbon dioxide induced “climate change” (for lack of a better phrase). I was surprised tofind out that Mr. Hart was Professor Emeritus of International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa,Canada and not a scientist since his insight into scientific matters is acute. His analysis of theprecautionary principle which appears to be a very pervasive and persuasive argument used byenvironmentalists is effectively criticized at length in his treatise. The role of policy makers andpoliticians is particularly interesting since the role of risk is not often discussed in detail regarding thistopic. He states, “No government should entertain policy choices with such momentous negativeconsequences without a much firmer basis in both science and economics.”“Hubris” addresses all of the tough technical details of this debate from poor science, biased scientificdata to actual blatant data cherry-picking and data manipulation. These issues are known to those whohave researched the subject but apparently not to well known to the public at large or even to most ofthe IPCC delegates. Among other topics he discusses the inherent problems associated with computermodels that have been used as “scientific data”, the important role of clouds and water vapor innegating the importance of anthropogenic carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the importance ofsatellite data that do not show warming of the troposphere, just to name a few of the myriad of factsthat are detailed. “Hubris” effectively mines existing climate studies and explains how little is reallyknown about a system as complex and chaotic as the climate system. Many scientists know what the drawbacks of going against the “established truth” particularly in thisfield. It is to his credit and courage that Mr. Hart self-published this incredibly comprehensive treatise. Isuggest anyone interested in learning the underlying elements of climate change to purchase “Hubris:The Troubling Science, Economics, and Politics of Climate Change” as reference material.
