"[...]Clock-Tower is. We walked an hour and more, for he had much to say to me. He had a scheme for chartering a new ship of their own to take out cargo to the diggers and emigrants in California, and to buy and bring back gold. Into the particulars of that scheme I will not enter, and I have no right to enter. All I say of it is, that it was a very original one, a very fine one, a very sound one, and a very lucrative one beyond doubt. He imparted it to me as freely as if I had been a part of himself. After doing so, he made me the handsomest sharing offer that ever was made to me, boy or man—or I believe to any other captain in the Merchant Navy—and he took this round turn to finish with: “Ravender, you are well aware that the [...]".

However, not included here are the collaborative bits (stories related by the castaways to ease their ordeal.) These were part of the original book, and were contributed by Wilkie Collins and other contemporaries of Charles Dickens. I was disappointed that these "stories within the story" were omitted.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Had never read this Dickens story. By Joanne A short story that takes one immediately into the location and the lives of the characters. Loved it but SOOOO wanted to know what the future held for everyone.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not his best work By historybuff It is a rather mediocre short story. The characters are on a life boat after their ship goes down. A dozen people sitting around complaining about their circumstances is not gripping reading.

By majenta While your middle-grade daughters are enjoying the American Girl Samantha series, you can be discovering Marietta Holley's own Samantha series from the 19th and early 20th centuries.I thought I had first learned of Marietta Holley and her totally Americana heroine at behindthename.com under the entry for the name "Samantha," but when I went to double-check, I read no such reference.I haven't actually gotten all the way through any of the books I loaded onto my Kindle, but I like what I'm reading so far! Samantha Smith Allen is the wife of Josiah Allen; they reside in Jonesville near Loontown and are in their middle years with grown children (including Josiah's son Thomas Jefferson Allen, whom they call Thomas J.) and growing grandchildren (such as Thomas J.'s son Tommy), and the books are about their travels and their domestic ups'n'downs. Her first-person discourses reminded me of the gossip sessions in REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM (amongst Rebecca's aunts and their neighbors, such as the mothers of Rebecca's new classmates/friends) and the speech patterns of their neighbor Jeremiah Cobb ("on-" for "un-", "stun" for "stone", etc.); and the poems of James Whitcomb Riley (you know, "Our Hired Girl", "The Raggedy Man"). Marietta Holley grew up on a farm in New York State; her lifespan was 1836-1926.I have to say, I'm enjoying Holley's Samantha saga much better than Martha Finley (1829-1909)'s ELSIE DINSMORE saga which is also available for free at Kindle! (Both heroines apparently travel to the WORLD'S FAIR.) The writing is more accessible...and more humorous. If you crave Americana, don't wait to get acquainted with Samantha!THE WOMAN QUESTION is about women's rights, and calls the organized campaigners "suffragists," which I admit I prefer to "suffragettes." Samantha and Josiah are planning a trip to Washington D.C. and friends, relatives, and neighbors are requesting all manner of souvenirs, which Samantha calls "wanting to send errents [errands] by me," and she tells what some of them are: for instance, a bride-to-be would like her to find out if there are any new-and-different quilt patterns. Another neighbor has more serious matters on her mind, which Samantha relates to us. (Oh, but that particular neighbor's name! Actually, there are quite a few people in Samantha's life with nigh-on-farcical monikers. You've just got to give these books a read and meet some of these people.) Once Samantha gets going on a story, you might not want her to stop short and conclude "But I am episoddin', and to resoom" with what she really wanted to say. I mean, you might love it all, her intended tales and the digressions.Get comfy under your crazy quilt and enjoy some comfort-reading via your thoroughly-modern Kindle.

A panoramic overview of biotechnologies that can endlessly boost human capabilities and the drastic changes these “superhuman” traits could trigger Biotechnology is moving fast. In the coming decades, advanced pharmaceuticals, bioelectronics, and genetic interventions will be used not only to heal the sick but to boost human physical and mental performance to unprecedented levels. People will have access to pills that make them stronger and faster, informatic devices will interface seamlessly with the human brain, and epigenetic modification may allow people to reshape their own physical and mental identities at will.Until recently, such major technological watersheds—like the development of metal tools or the industrialization of manufacturing—came about incrementally over centuries or longer. People and social systems had time to adapt: they gradually developed new values, norms, and habits to accommodate the transformed material conditions. But contemporary society is dangerously unprepared for the dramatic changes it is about to experience down this road on which it is already advancing at an accelerating pace. The results will no doubt be mixed. People will live longer, healthier lives, will fine-tune their own thought processes, and will generate staggeringly complex and subtle forms of knowledge and insight. But these technologies also threaten to widen the rift between rich and poor, to generate new forms of social and economic division, and to force people to engage in constant cycles of upgrades and boosts merely to keep up. Individuals who boost their traits beyond a certain threshold may acquire such extreme capabilities that they will no longer be recognized as unambiguously human. In this important and timely book, prize-winning historian Michael Bess provides a clear, nontechnical overview of cutting-edge biotechnology and paints a vivid portrait of a near-future society in which bioenhancement has become a part of everyday life. He surveys the ethical questions raised by the enhancement enterprise and explores the space for human agency in dealing with the challenges that these technologies will present.Headed your way over the coming decades: new biotechnologies that can powerfully alter your body and mind. The possibilities are tantalizing:• Rejuvenation therapies offering much longer lives (160 and even beyond) in full vigor and mental acuity • Cognitive enhancement through chemical or bioelectronic means (the rough equivalent of doubling or tripling IQ scores) • Epigenetic tools for altering some of your genetically influenced traits at any point in your lifetime (body shape, athletic ability, intelligence, personality) • Bioelectronic devices for modulating your own brain processes, including your “pleasure centers” (a potentially non-stop high) • Direct control of machines by thought, and perhaps direct communication with other people, brain-to-brain (a new dimension of sharing and intimacy) But some of the potential consequences are also alarming: • A growing rift between the biologically enhanced and those who can’t afford such modifications • A constant cycle of upgrades and boosts as the bar of “normal” rises ever higher—“Humans 95, Humans XP, Humans 8” • The fragmentation of humankind into rival “bioenhancement clusters” • A gradually blurring boundary between “person” and “product” • Extreme forms of self-modification, with some individuals no longer recognized as unambiguously human

Our Grandchildren Redesigned: Life in the Bioengineered Society of the Near Future, by Michael Bess

Review “In the future, accelerating technology and unexpected, revolutionary events—most of which will never be predicted by futurists—may produce a society as alien as some of our tools. Bess delivers an insightful philosophical analysis of how we must adjust.”—Kirkus Reviews“Rejuvenation therapies that could potentially extend human lifespans to 160 years or more, chemical or bioelectronic cognitive enhancement that could double or triple IQ scores, bioelectronic devices for modulating brain processes including ‘pleasure centers,’ so-called ‘designer babies,’ and much more are poised to cross the threshold from science fiction to reality in the near future. Michael Bess offers a sober prediction of how such advances will directly affect human society, and the ethical dilemmas that could result. Our Grandchildren Redesigned is fascinating from cover to cover and near-impossible to put down. Highly recommended!”—The Midwest Book Review

Pragmatic and Balanced Examination of Human Enhancement Technologies By Kevin Joseph Our Grandchildren Redesigned offers a comprehensive and balanced look at the inevitable future of human enhancement. Unlike some futurists, who tend to approach these issues with a strong pro-enhancement or anti-enhancement bias, Michael Bess brings an unwaveringly pragmatic viewpoint to the subject matter. His thesis is that our best hope for integrating enhancements into our society, without creating undesirable gaps between the haves and have-nots, compromising our values, or losing touch with what it means to be human, is to create a worldwide regulatory framework that keeps tabs on enhancement technologies and ensures they progress in a measured and sensible way, ensuring access to basic enhancements by all and banning certain technologies that pose too great of a threat to our values. He effectively uses hypothetical scenarios to show how various types of genetic, pharmaceutical and bioelectric enhancements would impact our day-to-day lifestyles, and draws upon these examples to frame important questions about justice and identity. While the challenges he identifies are daunting, and the solutions he proposes are often complex, in the end he leaves us with an optimistic message that the human race can influence its future evolution by making careful choices about what enhances and detracts from important human values. I can only hope that leaders in these fields read this book and consider its important message.-Kevin Joseph, author of The Champion Maker

Rarely do guesses years in advance of what is coming turn out reasonably accurate. This new book by Michael Bess propels us few generations into the future. Time will tell how well he has hit the mark. Our Grandchildren Redesigned: Life in the Bioengineered Society of the Near Future is a scholarly projection of where science might take humankind. It presumes that humans will become drastically different. Bess posits that the journey has already begun into the kind of future he discusses. He cites a 2011 survey indicating that as many as 30% of students were already employing cognitive enhancers fairly regularly on some campuses. Here are a few things that could be coming in the author's view. The future may see people able to transmit thoughts brain-to-brain. Human technology may overcome practical limits to a human lifespan. In one of several vignettes in his book, the possibility is raised of average human lifespans of 155 years for men, and 160 years for women. With much longer lifespans coupled with good health, a person might be able to have multiple careers over their life. An “enhancement industry” could arise to package human traits. There's much food for thought there. The book is best devoured at a slow read.

Thinkers like Voltaire, Diderot By john messerly (from reasonandmeaning.com)Vanderbilt University's Michael Bess has written an extraordinarily thoughtful new book: Our Grandchildren Redesigned: Life In The BioEngineered Society Of The Near Future. The first part of the book introduces the reader to the technologies that will enhance the physical, emotional, and intellectual abilities of our children and grandchildren: pharmaceuticals, bioelectronics, genetics, nanotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, and virtual reality. In the second part of the book Bess sets out the pro and cons of human enhancement. The arguments against bioenhancement are that doing so: 1) plays god or interferes with nature; 2) destroys the qualities that make us human; 3) subverts dignity by commodifying human traits; 4) displays hubris and robs life of its meaning; and 5) rejects the limitations that define humanity. In these multiple ways enhancement will lead to disaster. The arguments for bioenhancement are that doing so: 1) continues the long process of controlling ourselves and our world; 2) expresses our natural desires for new capabilities and richer experiences; 3) rejects the legacy of blind evolution and advocates directing the evolutionary process; 4) will reduce suffering and other constraints on our being; and 5) pursues our potential to be more than we are now, which is what gives life meaning.Bess argues that the differences between the pro and anti-enhancement camps reflect the tension between conservative and romantic reactions to the Enlightenment. Thinkers like Voltaire, Diderot, Locke, and Kant emphasized progress and perfectibility combined with an optimism about human social and moral evolution. Progress could continue indefinitely, as humans used reason to unlock their inner potential. But conservatives like Edmund Burke saw human nature as limited and more fixed. Instead of progressive social evolution, they saw recurring patterns of greed and violence.Bess suggests a via media between these two visions. He sees the human condition as characterized by change, innovation and novelty, as well as by continuity, preservation and order. Wisdom combines the two visions: "hope ... tempered by humility ... an attitude of openness to the future, chastened by the sobering lessons of past experience. The resulting moral maxim would be: embrace innovation, but proceed critically, incrementally, and cautiously in adopting it; explore new possibilities, but remain acutely cognizant of the historical track record as you go." Bess refers to his view as "chastened optimism." (78)Chastened optimism considers various forms of enhancement on a case-by-case basis, but what moral framework should we use to make these assessments? SInce human beings differ regarding their moral beliefs, Bess argues that the best we can do is to combine the ancient concept of human flourishing with today's positive psychology and the "capabilities approach" in economic theory. Together these two fields have come to a consensus about the personal traits and social conditions that contribute to human flourishing, and Bess believes that this provides a framework for assessing enhancement technologies. The key factors in human flourishing from the individual perspective are: security; dignity; autonomy; personal fulfillment; authenticity; and pursuit of practical wisdom. From a societal perspective the key factors are: fairness; interpersonal connectedness; civic engagement; and transcendence. This framework helps us answer questions about whether a particular enhancement will or will not contribute to human flourishing, although in most cases the answer will not be straightforward.Other questions will arise as well. Who gets enhanced? Will this create a new caste system? What of those who reject enhancement? Bess thinks it unlikely that first world democracies would tolerate a biological class system, and that violence may accompany the desire for universal access to enhancement technologies. As for those who reject these technologies, it is unclear whether the non-modified will be able to live peaceably beside the modified as the Amish do today. But when large numbers of individuals choose to adopt bioenhancement, there will be tremendous pressure on others to do so as well. But the implications are startling. By the end of this century non-modified humans will be at a distinct disadvantage. Given enough time, modified and non-modified humans will be different species. In the third part of the book explores the more ethereal effects enhancements will have on individual humans. Do pharmaceuticals enhance our experiences by disconnecting us from reality? Do enhancements mechanize the self by eliminating the messy and unpredictable aspects of human experience? And if the answer is yes to these questions are enhancements worth the price?Similar questions arise regarding moral enhancement. Suppose we can give people a "morality pill" to increase the likelihood that people would make ethical choices, an idea that is becoming increasingly realistic. This pill (or chemical we put in the water) wouldn't completely override free will; rather it would increase the proclivity toward altruism. Bess says we should reject the pill because intention is a large part of what makes an act moral and the pill too heavily influences moral intention. In short he believes that free will is worth the price of whatever negative outcomes follow from it. I think that this is a very large price to pay for an idea, free will, that may be illusory anyway. Still Bess maintains that moral enhancement, to the extent it undermines free will, removes moral meaning from the world. But I would reply that who cares about discarding the idea moral meaning if a better world would result. No doubt I am revealing my utilitarian preferences.Other ethereal problems relating to human identity include: the possible monitoring and sharing of our intimate thoughts; the development of better virtual reality; and the extension of human lifespans. In addition enhancement technologies will bring about unforeseen consequences. What will be the future of sex, food, privacy, the arts, and war? No doubt the future will be weird in ways that are at present inconceivable. Bess thinks we should be a bit scared. "If you think your iPhone is a transformative device, just wait til they turn on your brain-machine interface." (174)The last section of the book explores the ethical questions raised by the pursuit of human enhancement. How far should we go with enhancements? What modifications should embrace and which should we reject? Will we even have a say in determining such matters? What is generally better, modest or radical enhancements? What sorts of creatures do we want to become, and what sort do we to avoid becoming?Bess doubts that we can "just say no" to these technologies for even if we did some would pursue them in a black market or in countries that approve of such technologies. Thus complete relinquishment of enhancement technologies is a non-starter. So the real question is whether we want to pursue enhancements at a low-level, increasing today's capabilities; at a mid-level, capabilities beyond today's levels but still recognized as human; or a high level, capabilities we would classify as transhuman or posthuman. It is the transhumanist vision that Bess especially fears. He argues that you cannot have a radically expanded cognitive architecture with transforming identity. Such a consciousness would no longer be anything like the consciousness it used to be. Thus, to transform ourselves in this manner would be to terminate ourselves and become a new kind of sentient being. But we should not do this because of the potential for posthumans to harm others. "Until we know a great deal more than we do today about what such entities would be like ... it would be the height of folly and irresponsibility to proceed with the project of creating them ... The potential rewards are too uncertain, and the risks are far too great." Furthermore, the societal consequences of some of us becoming posthuman might tear the fabric of civilization apart. While Bess admits that the temptation to pursue radical enhancements will be great, he counsels restraint. He hopes that as we adapt to low-level changes, we can gradually relax the constraints on mid-level and high-level ones. Of course he admits that enforcing these moratoriums would be difficult, and international cooperation would be difficult to achieve, but arms control provides a model of how this might be accomplished. Still trying to control technologies that may spell our doom is worth the effort. While we may not be able to control where enhancement technology leads, we can still influence the path it takes.Bess' book is one of the most thoughtful meditations on the future that I have encountered. Moreover, the book is carefully and conscientiously crafted, and meticulously argued. He is impartial to the end, giving a fair hearing to contradictory arguments. In the end I would situate Bess' views a bit more toward the conservative side of the argument. While he is optimistic that we can muddle our way through the coming storm, which demands a large dose of optimism indeed, I sense more fear than excitement. I think Bess overestimates how good life is now, and underestimates how good it can be.Bess concludes that in the future: "the most potent deed of all will still take the form of a smile, a silent nod of empathy, a hand gently laid on someone's arm. The merest act of kindness will still remain the Ultimate Enhancement." This is touching, and it reminds us that remaking the world demands more than just engineering. But Iet us hope that Bess doesn't mean this literally; let us hope that in the future we can do more for human suffering than smile, nod and touch. Let us hope that someday there will be more than just kindness to ameliorate the reality of our descendents.

As organizations strive to do more with less, many are turning to Lean methodology, which is based on the same techniques that propelled the legendary turnaround of Japan's industrial sector after World War II. Few leaders, however, understand that the real secret behind Lean is a comprehensive approach to management that differs significantly from what is taught in business school. Lean initiatives, consequently, are rarely led by senior management, and seldom lead to significant change.

The Lean CEO reveals the true power of Lean through in-depth interviews with CEOs who have gone beyond tool adoption and established Lean as a corporate-wide management system. The all-star cast of twenty-eight leaders represents a wide variety of organizations, including global manufacturers Ingersoll-Rand and Barry-Wehmiller, healthcare icons Thedacare and Virginia Mason, the states of Connecticut and Washington, historical icons such as Wiremold, and many more.

In a series of provocative chapters, the CEOs tell in their own words how they applied Lean management to deliver sustainable financial results, empower and motivate employees, break down internal silos, and build solid partnerships with customers and suppliers. Their testimony provides a goldmine of practical advice for managers in Lean and non-Lean organizations alike as they share their unique personal insights on topics such as:

  • Leading and empowering people.
  • Building transparency and trust.
  • Tuning into the customer experience.
  • Aligning strategic direction with day-to-day operations.
  • Instilling a corporate-wide culture that promotes safety and quality.
  • Creating a learning organization

Thoughtful, sometimes brutally frank, these leaders challenge many of the sacred cows of traditional business, such as standard cost accounting, hierarchical management, emphasis on large batches, and our obsession with data and computers. Citing numerous examples from their experience, they provide a fresh view of today's business challenges and a positive roadmap for any organization that is striving for excellence.

By Autamme_dot_com Lean methodology is one of those things that seems to be either implemented perfectly and reaps great rewards by the dedicated or badly implemented by a “Lean guru” for a company who is jumping on a trend.Sadly this reviewer has seen and heard about a lot of poor, half-hearted Lean implementations over the years. This book manages to inject a bit of enthusiasm and respect back to Lean. For those who have already went along their Lean journey this book would be a good guide to help confirm you are doing things the right way. For those who are yet to take their first Lean steps, this book might focus your mind and help you deal with a sea of bulls*** and bravado that can come along, should you have picked the wrong “guru” to lead the process. What was particularly great about this book is that the author has conducted many in-depth interviews with CEOs who have successfully introduced Lean as a corporate-wide management system. The move was not plain selling for every company, yet the trials and tribulations have been worth it, with the book giving a mass of practical advice for Lean and non-Lean companies alike. The author notes (obliquely) the identity problems Lean can face, saying: “Most people … see Lean as merely a set of tactical methods and most organisations that practice Lean do so superficially. Typically, a company might undertake a series of Lean projects to reduce costs, cut down on defects, or solve a bottleneck in a manufacturing process. These isolated attempts rarely result in real change and invariably lead to the abandonment of Lean for the next flavour of the month. Lean's true potential to build world-class performance depends on a commitment to continuous improvement that involves every worker in the organisation and requires uncommon discipline and persistence. The basic tenets of Lean, moreover, challenge many aspects of traditional management theory and call for a mindset that is foreign to most executives.”Hear hear! One problem is that anyone can set themselves up as a Lean guru – this reviewer included – and spout enough mumbo-jumbo that vaguely sounds credible or part of a “system” and get away with it, especially in smaller companies. Inflexible adherence to something that might be relevant by an automatic welding machine yet inappropriate in a sales office such as the location of a waste bin and a taped-out area where a pen (only one mind, not two and absolutely not three) doesn’t help the cause to Lean adoption. Small and stupid things can stand out, overshadowing the good parts. Some of the claims made by the author in an almost matter-of-fact manner are stunningly alarming, such as: “a popular rule of thumb in the Lean community is that 95 per cent of Lean transformations fail from lack of senior management support.” Yet Lean is a lot more than being just a production-led efficiency scheme. It has the capability to challenge and change many common business practices such as standard cost accounting, top-down management, emphasis on batch sizes and economies of scale and an obsession with data, notes the author. Here’s the problem! This is at odds with conventional management thinking, something that is still being taught at possibly the majority of business schools worldwide, even in 2015.This was a gripping, engaging, thoughtful and challenging book. The author notes that Lean is not an easy process even for those who believe in it and want it to succeed. For those who just want another “box to tick” you can imagine the end results are not as potentially lucrative.Whatever your company’s size and whatever it does, reading this book might be one of your wiser decisions, even if you never will formally implement Lean. You may find that Lean can begin to take over your company by osmosis.

Useful for all managers By jerry shiner Should be read by anybody who manages peopleAnybody who’s worked in a corporate environment knows that there’s something very wrong with the conventional way in which people are managed. The shortcomings of “business as usual” have been documented for decades, but by presenting lean in this context, this book lays out a real alternative. The book starts with an overview, then chronicles how 28 CEOs faced crises which led them to adopt the management principles pioneered by Toyota. What we learn is that ultimately, people are the key to the long-term success of any organization.Managing better, we learn, isn’t just about better leaders who treat people well. It’s about having a system in place that gives everybody the opportunity to contribute and the incentive to work together, regardless of their level in the organization. The Lean CEO lays this out in non-technical terms, making it an accessible read for anybody who is concerned with the status quo in their organization.

By AR This on my top shelf of recommendations to CEO's and other executives about the possibilities with lean transformation. I was proud to be part of the success a several of these companies and so proud of their stories. They made it happen and have made a difference not only for the stockholders but all the employees of their companies. Great book in a great interview format! Jean Cunningham

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I wouldn't call it comprehensive, but... By John Woodman Let's pick the first bone. "A Comprehensive Guide to Financial Planning" is a bit ambitious for the subtitle. A truly comprehensive guide to the topic would be much longer. On the other hand, "An Good, Solid Overview of Important Financial Planning Concepts for Real People" might not sell as well. That is what this book is. It doesn't go super-deep on any one topic, but it does provide a good overview. And it does so in a way that -- for the most part -- is accessible to ordinary people, and won't put you to sleep any more than necessary. In that sense, it's better, for most of us, than a longer, deeper book would be. Who has time to read a thousand page book anyway? 176 pages (with some of that space covered with helpful charts, graphs and illustrations) is doable. There's also the occasional interesting fact. (Did you know, for example, that the United States has more tax preparers than police and firefighters combined? Did you know that a nursing home runs, on average, in excess of $200 a day?)You will also run into some helpful "rule of thumb" highlights that give practical tips. For example: "Municpal bonds issued by U.S. territories like Puerto Rico are exempt from federal and state income tax regardless of your state of residency."I originally thought to give the book "4.5 stars," but as I got further into it, I found enough useful little tidbits that I decided it's worth a "5." That's not to say it's perfect -- for example, the discussions of defined contribution plans, rollover IRAs, net unrealized appreciation, and revocable living trusts could all be a bit clearer -- but that's kind of nitpicking in light of the whole.I can envision a few different uses for this book. First, it's a good start as an educational book on financial concepts. Second, you could use it as a guide to help you in your own efforts to understand how to progress in managing your own financial affairs. Third, it serves as a basis for working with and getting help from appropriate professionals, which most of us, sooner or later, will need to do.A small disclosure: I originally started to read a library copy of this book, in 2014, then decided to buy my own copy. At that time, though, Mr. Glover had withdrawn the book from publication and no copies were available. So I emailed and asked when the new edition would be available. He replied and told me "spring of next year."I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email in the spring asking whether I would be willing to write an honest review in exchange for a copy or two. Yes, I wrote back. Mr. Glover was generous enough to send 3 copies. I appreciate his generosity. However, the review is still what I would've written if I had purchased the cop(ies) myself.

Good Introduction to a Lot of Important Retirement Concepts -- Worthwhile Updates from the 2013 Edition By W.Armstrong Update:I recently purchased the new edition of "Preparing for Retirement" to have all the updated tax, investment, and other financial figures on hand for easy reference. I was pleasantly surprised to see the addition of several new topics such as the impact of Obamacare, design considerations for small business retirement plans, as well as a whole chapter on real estate (mortgages, investment property, etc.) All in all, I feel like it was a nice upgrade from the earlier addition for only $13.95 (price on Amazon at the time of my purchase).Original Review from August 2013: Let me preface my review by saying that I have read lots of books about retirement, financial planning, investments, etc. So, I feel like I have seen a pretty good snapshot of what's out there to educate folks on money related topics. This book, "Preparing for Retirement", was a great addition to my library. I think what I like best about it is the organizational structure and how the author is able to succinctly communicate the important details without any extra fluff. The chapters are straightforward and the topics are all important in their own way to creating an holistic financial plan. I would strongly recommend "Preparing for Retirement" to anyone who would like to increase their knowledge-base about all things financial.

It presents the topics in a structured manner easy to digest. Copious tables and graphs rapidly aid illustrating the topics in each of the chapters. Presented are up to date information on IRA, Roth , 529, SS distribution and similar topic, all compiled in a single volume. In addition, the Appendix contains forms for planning and collecting all your personal information, necessary to make sound retirement decision. Excellent value for your money!

We are a weird species. Like other species, we have a culture. But by comparison with other species, we are strangely unstable: human cultures self-transform, diverge, and multiply with bewildering speed. They vary, radically and rapidly, from time to time and place to place. And the way we live - our manners, morals, habits, experiences, relationships, technology, values - seems to be changing at an ever accelerating pace. The effects can be dislocating, baffling, sometimes terrifying. Why is this?In A Foot in the River, best-selling historian Felipe Fernández-Armesto sifts through the evidence and offers some radical answers to these very big questions about the human species and its history - and speculates on what these answers might mean for our future. Combining insights from a huge range of disciplines, including history, biology, anthropology, archaeology, philosophy, sociology, ethology, zoology, primatology, psychology, linguistics, the cognitive sciences, and evenbusiness studies, he argues that culture is exempt from evolution. Ultimately, no environmental conditions, no genetic legacy, no predictable patterns, no scientific laws determine our behaviour. We can consequently make and remake our world in the freedom of unconstrained imaginations. A revolutionary book which challenges scientistic assumptions about culture and how and why cultural change happens, A Foot in the River comes to conclusions which readers may well find by turns both daunting and also potentially hugely liberating.

A Foot in the River: Why Our Lives Change - and the Limits of Evolution, by Felipe Fernández-Armesto

Review "This is "big history" to the utmost degree, an attempt to unite science and history in a single explanatory scheme much like the work of Jared Diamond. Excessively erudite, extraordinarily wide-ranging, and written with great clarity... Fernandez-Armesto is sure to stir up debate, lure others into similar speculation, and perhaps strengthen the chance of closer mutual endeavors between the physical sciences and the humanities." --Publishers Weekly

5 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great (But Wrong) By Amit Vora Felipe Fernandez-Armesto is a beautiful, lyrical writer, worth emulating. I would recommend this book for that reason alone. Reading it will improve your writing. The author is not only skilled, but he is also fearless: Although he is a historian, he is not afraid to delve into philosophy, evolutionary psychology, and comparative cognition, among other subjects. His book is so broad, so sprawling that he (perhaps unwittingly) ends up summarizing all of Western thought on the concept of “change.”I happen to disagree with his thesis. As the author himself observes of Rene Girard: “I always recommend [his writings] to students, although I see his books as belonging in the category of ‘great but wrong.’” I would place this one in the same bin.An evolutionary psychologist such as Dawkins could articulate my objection better than I ever could, but in short: Fernandez-Armesto argues that evolutionary theory lacks the explanatory power to account for the rich, dynamic cacophony of human cultural traditions (or “nostrums”) because the “variation” of human DNA is “infinitesimal” compared with the “enormous diversity” of human culture. But no serious evolutionary theorist contends that evolution functions at such a specific level. His argument is based on a mistaken premise; he rails against a straw man.Consider language. Nature does not dictate that we speak English, as opposed to Chinese. The particular language that we speak is not encoded in our genes. But this obvious fact does not expose the limits of evolutionary theory’s explanatory power. Indeed, evolution harmonizes with – and predicts – linguistic variation. Evolution imposes certain constraints on how we acquire and how we speak language. Certain universal rules govern all human languages. (See Chomsky, Pinker.) But evolution leaves environmental stimuli plenty of room to operate within those constraints. The same goes for culture. Evolutionary theory does not propose that particular human cultural traditions are encoded in our genes. Evolutionary theory is not so bold. Rather, it proposes that our diverse traditions operate within certain universal rules. That is not to say that evolution has no role to play in molding culture. Adopting cultural traditions likely has adaptive value. Specifically, it is likely that: (i) some traditions are adaptive; (ii) other traditions have become maladaptive only because our current environment no longer resembles the ancestral environment; (iii) conformity itself has adaptive value, both for the individual and the group.Nonetheless, even if it is adaptive for a group to, say, adopt a tradition of bathing in the morning (because cleanliness enhances evolutionary fitness), evolutionary theory would not predict that members of this group necessarily share a “bathe-in-the-morning” gene. After all, it might have been equally adaptive for this group, or another group with same DNA, to adopt a tradition of bathing at night. The point is that we all bathe (eventually). Evolutionary theory can account for our divergent cultural traditions without positing that we have genetic commitments to specific behaviors. At bottom, I recommend this book to students of all disciplines, from history to cognitive science. I enjoyed every sentence – even those I dispute. One example of his brilliance: “It is one of the privileges of a predictor to locate his prophecies in a future so remote as to make them unfalsifiable until he is long dead.”This book is a work of art, an interdisciplinary masterpiece. Read it.

Focusing on the problems that brains help organisms solve, Neurobiology: A Functional Approach asks not only how the nervous system works but also why it works as it does. This text introduces readers to neurobiology through an evolutionary, organismal, and experimental perspective. With a strong emphasis on neural circuits and systems, it bridges the gap between the cellular and molecular end and the cognitive end of the neuroscience spectrum, allowing students to grasp the full breadth of the subject. Neurobiology covers not only what neuroscientists have learned about the brain in terms of facts and ideas, but also how they have learned it through key experiments.

Neurobiology: A Functional Approach, by Georg F. Striedter

Review "The author has done an exceptional job of taking the concepts covered in other Neuroscience textbooks and organizing them in a way that should help students make the connections between the theory and the practice."--Judith Ochrietor, University of North Florida

"This text approaches neurobiology from an organismal perspective instead of just presenting factual information without context. I like the integrative approach this text offers, and the coverage of neuroanatomy (including important functional pathways) in the first chapter made me want to adopt this text for use in my course."--John D. Griffin, College of William and Mary

"I like this book's overall approach very much. For an introductory textbook it is important to keep things simple, avoid unnecessary jargon, and explain thoroughly the significance of the material, and Professor Striedter does all of these things exceptionally well. The text not only presents the facts, but also explains in detail the original experiments that discovered these facts, thus encouraging students to understand the science rather than just memorize information."--Kwoon Wong, University of Michigan

"By considering the whole organism, and approaching each aspect of the nervous system as a problem, the text connects each topic to the next, allowing students to build a more holistic understanding of the nervous system."--Sara Tallarovic, University of the Incarnate Word

"This is a book that I would consider ideal for an Intro Neuroscience course. It has a strong pre-med emphasis, but also adequate animal examples."--Barry Condron, University of Virginia

About the Author Georg F. Striedter is Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior at University of California, Irvine. Dr. Striedter's research focuses on the evolution of brain development in different animal species.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An incredibly readable introduction to Neurobiology By Jordan E. Out of all of the biology textbooks I have read thus far this one was by far the most readable. It describes concepts as they would be described by one of your friends, and still provides just enough detail to satisfy the specificity and rigor of a Neurobiology course. This text is probably not ideal for more advanced courses delving deep into specifics of the nervous system, nor as a reference text for the brain in general. However, it's truly excellent for those just getting their first or second taste of the field of Neurobiology.

A beautifully written book that explains how (and why By GMS A beautifully written book that explains how (and why!) the nervous system works, and it does so in easy to grasp terms. It explains neurobiology in terms of systems that independent units are organized in, and shows connections and links between each process. It really helps to see a bigger picture of how the brain works without compromising on details of each process. The book is very easy to read and understand, which is super important for a text book. Each chapter includes sometimes rather philosophical Brain Exercises that encourage readers to pause and think about why things work that way and what would happen if they would not.I greatly recommend this book for any neurobiology major!

"[...]narrowness of the upper river there always existed this impediment which an insecure soil would present to the formation of any considerable settlements. The loneliness of the stretch below Kelmscott is due to an original difficulty of this kind, and the one considerable settlement upon the upper river at Lechlade stands upon the only place where firm ground approaches the bank of the river. This formation endures well below Oxford until one reaches the gap at Sandford, where the stream passes[...]".

Nothing better has replaced it--we've just gotten stupider. This book is the type of remarkable work that one rarely sees nowadays: it's a geogaphic description of the Thames from its source to the sea and the human history tied up with the river (as well as a debunking of some of the myths of the reformation). This farrago is really a forerunner of the psycho-geography written by Peter Ackroyd (such as his vastly entertaining work, London). A great book.

Can you imagine the helplessness and fear that a five-year-old would feel when he's first visited by extraterrestrials? How about the look on his parents' faces when he confesses his alien encounter?

Chosen: Chronicles of an Alien Abductee is Byron W. Lacy's firsthand account of what modern science insists is only folklore.

The first encounters come when he is young—with "little men" entering the room as he hugs his teddy bear. They masquerade as cartoon characters to ease his concern, a dancing Captain Hook—minus the hook—joining his comrades. Future visits lead to psychic connections with his visitors.

Admitting such encounters takes courage, especially when similar comments by a family member placed her in a mental hospital. But Lacy lays it all out on the table as he details what it's like to be an alien abductee.

Chosen: Chronicle of an Alien Abductee isn't just for the disbelievers. It's a free discussion of Lacy’s experience—one meant to encourage other abductees through their own moments of skepticism both from others and within.

Discover the truth, and let it set you free.

Review A far-out, disconcertingly readable memoir that flatly declares everything about aliens you read online or see dramatized on TV is true. -Kirkus Reviews" Byron Lacy is a brave soldier in the battle for disclosure." MichaelAustin Melton, field investigator of abductions for MUFON , Part owner and host of  Starborn Support Radio.

From the Back Cover Straightenup. That's Byron W. Lacy's advice from his dad when he confesses his alienencounters. No longer willing to hold in the truth, Lacy now tells all in Chosen: Chronicles of an Alien Abductee. From1955 on, Lacy remembers numerous contacts with extraterrestrials. He recallsbeing a young boy, telling his "little man" stories to his teddy bearand an unbelieving mother--and later communicating with the visitors telepathically. Boththe physical and emotional impact of his experiences, as well as how he deals dailywith this knowledge, are all shared in a candid fashion meant to encourageothers. It isn't a book of proof--others already do that--but one of hope forfellow abductees trying to find their own way. There's life outthere. Lacy knows it. And your view of reality won't be the same after reading Chosen: Chronicles of an Alien Abductee.

About the Author

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Good read By Doug Johnson This is a great book on the subject of abduction from a personal point of view. I can only imagine how many others who have experienced abduction have been terrified to the point of never disclosing it to anyone, let alone writing a book about it. It is an excellent book that I highly recommend.

I think their are many of us who are looking for answers to our own strange experiences. Imagine if we all were as brave and shared our own experiences more freely how much more we might learn. Loved it !
