Doctor John was standing by the table with this horrid small book in his hand and his mouth was set in a[...]".

The overweight Molly recieves help from the doctor on losing her extra weight, while at the same time, finding the love she wants. A happy tale, of love and family, it is a sweet, comfortable read.

Hart A distant cousin gave me her copy of this book--it had been given to her by my great-grandma, and she'd read it time and time again. She warned me, though, that there were outdated notions in the book and that it wouldn't be acceptable by today's standards. There is some truth to what she said; the book's age is apparent in many ways. The sort of small, gossipy, isolated town Molly lives in still exists today, but is not so common as it was in Molly's time. One can hope that a modern doctor wouldn't support, let alone suggest, some of the weight-loss measures Molly takes. And, of course, standards for widows--and for women in general--have changed. But Molly's personality is more timeless than the societal issues. Her frivolity, her fickle flirtation, and the realizations she makes as she becomes less childish all contribute to her likability and the writing's believability. Furthermore, the buildup to the climax is excellent. This book may never be considered a classic, but it is thoroughly enjoyable--a perfect read for a rainy afternoon.

Woman After her youthful love, Alfred Bennett, moves away to Europe, heartbroken Molly is talked into marrying ol' stick-in-the-mud Mr. Carter. He kicks the bucket after a few years. Now that she's free again, Alfred dares to renew his plight with love letters and the promise to return for her in their small Tennessee town. While Molly is ecstatic, she's also a little bit worried because, well, it's been a couple of years and she's kinda put on a couple of pounds since last Alfred saw her. And who hasn't! It happens to the best of us! There's nothing wrong with being slightly overweight!*Ahem*Molly rushes over to her neighbor, Doctor John Moore, for advice on how to shed those extra pounds. (Thus the "Melting" of the title.) As she starts to lose weight, she also starts to lose that excess baggage she's been carrying around and sees the world with fresh eyes. She also sees Judge Wade, the handsome unmarried man who seems to have just seen her as well. Then there's always her flirtatious cousin, Tom Pollard, who's the first to notice that Molly is slowly coming out of her mourning and back into the world. But we all know that it's Doc John and his precocious son Billy that Molly really needs to hook up with, if only these two adult would get their heads on straight and admit their feelings.

I have been relatively successful with my own endeavors online but not without falling victim to tons of so-called "opportunities" that were merely a waste of time and money. Jillian Green has done a very nice job of putting together a list of honest and legitimate programs that work to produce income from the comfort of your home with nothing more than a computer and an internet connection. I have personally tried and tested several of the opportunities mentioned in this book in my entrepreneurial journey and can honestly say that they are 100% Legitimate and that they do work. It's a great place to start for anyone willing to suspend their doubt and give it a try. No get rich overnight schemes here... but definitely honest and legitimate work at home opportunities.

Unlike many other similar books, this one does not propose typical freelance platform for working, but it suggests some other possibilities for affiliate marketing. I like the fact that this book gives pros and cons of every proposed working platform, so you can get one objective image about those.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. you get less than what you pay for with this one By Josey Jacques Legitimate? Some people have an interesting take on this term. If the author means "legal", okay. But here's what this book is really about: trying to get you to click through her affiliate link to join these programs, most of which are about getting paid to look at advertisements.Um, some of us have better things to do with our time. The one "opportunity" I would consider semi-legit is the survey one. Then again, you don't get paid much for time with surveys. To me, a "legitimate" business involves getting paid for a product or service people genuinely need. None of the programs the author talks about fits. (And the writing is super amateurish, to boot.)

The Contrast, by Royall Tyler

About the Author Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1757 to Royall Tyler and Mary (Steele) Tyler, Tyler attended the Boston Latin School, Yale and then Harvard, where he earned a reputation as a quick-witted joker. After graduation, he briefly served in the Massachusetts militia under John Hancock during the abortive Rhode Island expedition. In late 1778, he returned to Harvard to study law, and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1780. He opened a practice in Braintree, Massachusetts, eight miles outside of Boston. After a brief stint in suppressing the 1787 Shays's Rebellion, Tyler moved to Boston and boarded in the house of Elizabeth Palmer. After unsuccessfully courting Abigail Adams for many years, in 1794, he wed the Palmers's daughter, Mary Palmer, took her to his new home in Vermont, and with her had eleven children. In 1801, Tyler was appointed to the Supreme Court of Vermont as an assistant judge, and was later elected chief justice. In 1812 he ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate. In 1826, he died in Vermont, of facial cancer that he had suffered from for ten years.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The First American Play By Laura Crockett If you would really like to know what sets United States Americans apart from their European roots, here's a must read book. Tyler's comedy was written expressly to portray the differences. This is not a political story. It's philosophical. It's romantic. To the point, Tyler uses a romance to illustrate how we would live differently than our forefathers and mothers across the seas. Before the American Revolution, the colonists were already living a life that was distinct from their relatives back in the Old World. First off, it takes a strong will to immigrate to a New World. Meaning that the American Colonies were filled with personalities that had a strong streak of individualism. That is the type of person who leaves their home and extended family behind to try his or her luck someplace else. Back before there was an entitlement system, it took much courage to leave all that one knew behind and go to a place that was not civilized in the European or Asian sense. America was primitive, meaning, a place without roads, established towns and cities. There was no way to earn a living. The first arrivals died off by the dozens and then hundreds. Unless one has been stranded on a deserted island, it is difficult for a modern to comprehend just how hard life was in the colonies. After 150 years, the colonists decide to go it alone. The strong individualist multiplied by the hundreds means an area of successful people who had carved out a strong, steady existence for themselves. Fortunes had been made, but more importantly, the middle class was strong and successful. There was work aplenty for everyone. Farms were prosperous, towns thrived and grew. Marriage was determined by the individuals, that is, a man courted without being setup by his parents. A woman decided on her own terms who she would marry. This does not mean that a man or woman didn't look to someone's character in deciding their marriage fate. It's what Tyler is talking about through his characters in this play. The old European model of marriage was based on property and companionship. The American model was based on companionship and property. Since marriage was a forever status, it was of extreme importance that a man and woman viewed the other with eyes wide open. What was the character of the individual? What would each bring to the marriage? The differences of male and female were acknowledged, but no woman was expected to sit at home to be a housewife as we know the term. Everyone, and I do mean all people from about the age of six and up, worked. It wasn't until the 19th century that women were thrown into the luxury of not having to work at something. That was, however, for city women only. Farm women have always worked. Therefore, it was important to be healthy, physically and mentally.Spiritual health was also taken into consideration. In America, there is no established church. A man and woman must peer into their prospective mate's heart as well. It's a tall order. It's a new order, a new way of looking at romance and marriage and the process of going through courtship. The Contrast is set up like any play of the 18th century, with a Prologue followed by five acts. The two main characters are Col. Manly and Maria. The "contrast" is laid out by two female characters, Charlotte and Letitia. Their dialogue in the beginning is insightful to the era in which they lived. The year is 1790, to be exact. The language is easily understood, not as formal as one might think. After all, this is an American play by an American author. To read The Contrast is to place yourself in a time machine, to go back into the minds of the original citizens of the United States of America. They were different. We still are. The US of A is different for a reason and this play will help you understand why. Enjoy.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the author deserved more attention By Christine If you enjoy reading 18thc works then you should like this play (I'm an 18thc bookworm); it's fast reading, the dialogue is witty without overdoing it, and there's not a lot of stage directions and descriptions which can be really annoying when you just want to read the story. It's too bad that Royall Tyler's works weren't appreciated enough back in his day. For that matter, neither was he. John and Abigail Adams rejected him as a worthy husband for their daughter, much preferring William Smith. Were they ever WRONG!

The cover has a nice feel - doesn't feel like a typical paperback. The entries are nice to read outside while enjoying nature (or huddled inside when nature is a bit too extreme outside) and the illustrations are a delight.I received this book in a Goodreads drawing.

THIS is the saddest story I have ever heard. We had known the Ashburnhams for nine seasons of the town of Nauheim with an extreme intimacy—or, rather with an acquaintanceship as loose and easy and yet as close as a good glove's with your hand. My wife and I knew Captain and Mrs Ashburnham as well as it was possible to know anybody, and yet, in another sense, we knew nothing at all about them. This is, I believe, a state of things only possible with English people of whom, till today, when I sit down to puzzle out what I know of this sad affair, I knew nothing whatever. Six months ago I had never been to England, and, certainly, I had never sounded the depths of an English heart. I had known the shallows.

The Good Soldier, by Ford Madox Ford

Amazon.com Review First published in 1915, Ford Madox Ford's The Good Soldier begins, famously and ominously, "This is the saddest story I have ever heard." The book then proceeds to confute this pronouncement at every turn, exposing a world less sad than pathetic, and more shot through with hypocrisy and deceit than its incredulous narrator, John Dowell, cares to imagine. Somewhat forgotten as a classic, The Good Soldier has been called everything from the consummate novelist's novel to one of the greatest English works of the century. And although its narrative hook--the philandering of an otherwise noble man--no longer shocks, its unerring cadences and doleful inevitabilities proclaim an enduring appeal.

Ford's novel revolves around two couples: Edward Ashburnham--the title's soldier--and his capable if off-putting wife, Leonora; and long-transplanted Americans John and Florence Dowell. The foursome's ostensible amiability, on display as they pass parts of a dozen pre-World War I summers together in Germany, conceals the fissures in each marriage. John is miserably mismatched with the garrulous, cuckolding Florence; and Edward, dashing and sentimental, can't refrain from falling in love with women whose charms exceed Leonora's. Predictably, Edward and Florence conduct their affair, an indiscretion only John seems not to notice. After the deaths of the two lovers, and after Leonora explains much of the truth to John, he recounts the events of their four lives with an extended inflection of outrage. From his retrospective perch, his recollections simmer with a bitter skepticism even as he expresses amazement at how much he overlooked.

Dowell's resigned narration is flawlessly conversational--haphazard, sprawling, lusting for sympathy. He exudes self-preservation even as he alternately condemns and lionizes Edward: "If I had had the courage and the virility and possibly also the physique of Edward Ashburnham I should, I fancy, have done much what he did." Stunningly, Edward's adultery comes to seem not merely excusable, but almost sublime. "Perhaps he could not bear to see a woman and not give her the comfort of his physical attractions," John surmises. Ford's novel deserves its reputation if for no other reason than the elegance with which it divulges hidden lives. --Ben Guterson

Review `This is the most intriguing, shocking and original book I have ever read. . . . The Good Soldier is the only book I have ever read and wanted to read again immediately . . .'The Times 21/04/01`beautifully written, a wonderful novel but old-fashioned'Norah Naish, Western Daily Press (Bristol)

From the Inside Flap Ford Madox Ford wrote The Good Soldier, the book on which his reputation most surely rests, in deliberate emulation of the nineteenth-century French novels he so admired. In this way he was able to explore the theme of sexual betrayal and its poisonous after-effects with a psychological intimacy as yet unknown in the English novel.

It truly is one of the saddest stories ever told By Robert Moore I was in a bookstore and picked a copy of this novel up, and from the second I read what I later learned was a famous first sentence (and justifiably so)--"This is the saddest story I have ever heard"--I knew I had to read it. What is truly sad about the book is that the narrator has no conception of where the tragedy in the book lies. While he is articulate and seemingly insightful in his analysis of others, he remains blissfully unaware of his own enormously failings, both in morals and in character. It is indeed a very sad story, but the narrator leaves out the fact that he is quite possibly one of the most pathetic characters in all fiction. If one prefers one's narrators and ostensible heroes to be truly heroic and sympathetic, then this novel will not please. If one, however, can imagine enjoying a novel written with J. Alfred Prufrock as the narrator and central character, then one is in a position to appreciate THE GOOD SOLDIER.The novel is not a page-turner. If you read this novel quickly, you have read it wrongly. The beauty of the book is the exquisite prose, and should be read slowly, savoring each sentence and each sentiment. There is a dreamlike (one could say nightmarish) quality to the book, and one will most enjoy it by allowing oneself to become entranced by the atmospheres summoned up.If you are willing to take the novel on its own terms, with its unheroic and unadmirable characters, with its pathetic elements and situations, and its subtle psychological observations, then there will be few reading experiences that will match THE GOOD SOLDIER. One of the most remarkable novels of the past century. But if you only like novels where there is a definite hero and admirable characters, you probably wouldn't enjoy this very much.

A Little Masterpiece By A Customer One of the greatest examples of the spoken-word novel, The Good Soldier succeeds where authors as great as Conrad have failed. Our narrator does not tell a straight, linear story. No. He forgets things, comes back to them later, revives a subject you thought dead and meaningless only to shed new light on it and make it important.Perhaps the greatest effect the book has is the after-taste. When reading the book, I found it slow and boring. Once I set it down, though, I couldn't stop thinking about it. I had to read it again. And once I began again, I found myself reading it slowly once more, though not from boredom, but rather because I wanted to savor it and take it all in.I encourage anyone who has begun this book only to find themselves tired of it rather quickly to stick with it. You'll be glad you did. You'll find yourself buying copies for friends to read, as I do. This book truly gets under your skin.

Master Craftsman at Work By John Sollami This novel broke new ground when it was written, something in these jaded days that is almost impossible to do. Ford created an unreliable narrator and also wrote about the complex inner workings of relationships, an area of darkness that will always be immune from full enlightenment. His characters also deceive themselves as well as significant others, and yet are always in pursuit of the perfect appearance. The subtlety with which Ford has woven this tapestry makes you think twice and then three times about who his people are and what they want. Unbridled lust also rides through the book, but is forever reigned in by double standards and self-torturing conscience. Although the book requires a patient reader so that it can bloom, its payoff stays with you, and its sharp observations and lack of sentiment make you realize what a brilliant piece of art it is. As such it is not subject to becoming dated or stale, a true test of its merit. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great work.

Gammer Gurton's Needle, by Mr. S. Mr. of Art

About the Author As a pediatrician, writer, wife, and mother, Perri Klass has demonstrated how medicine is integral to the health of families and communities, and how doctors themselves struggle to balance the conflicting needs of profession, self, and family. As medical director of Reach Out and Read, she encourages other pediatricians to foster pre-reading skills in their young patients. While earning her M.D. at Harvard, Klass contributed articles to "Mademoiselle" and "The New York Times" as well as to scientific and medical journals. She also wrote her first book, "A Not Entirely Benign Procedure "(1987), which chronicles her introduction to medicine and motherhood. In the following years she has continued to publish books, essays, award-winning short stories, a novel, and numerous articles, ranging from professional papers to popular journalism and travel pieces.

Although the prisoners were not supposed to have communication with each other or from outside, there was a complete system under which each one had news from all over the prison as well as from the outside world. This was done by a series of raps constituting the prison telegraph. As the guards usually visited the prison only at intervals in the daytime, the prisoners managed to pass[...]".

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. One of the titles in Mundy's "Jimgrim" series By Robert Bruce Scott This Mundy novel was also published under the title "The King in Check". I have already written reviews for the Mundy titles "The Ivory Trail" and "King of the Khyber Rifles". If you would like to get an idea of how much I enjoy Talbot Mundy books, check out those books and my reviews. This time I am going to quote from the blurb of "The King in Check", A. L. Burt edition as I think that it will tell you all you need to know about this great book: "The King in Check" is a highly exciting adventure story in which there again appears that famous hero of Mr. Mundy's special creation - Jimgrim or James Schuyler Grim. Jimgrim is an American secret service agent, at present in the employ of the British in Jerusalem. With him in the present novel are his faithful sikh shadow, Narayan Singh; as well as Ramsden, an American and Jeremy Ross, an ex-soldier of the Australian forces, both eager for a fight of any kind. This opportunity soon presents itself, as the abmitions of the French in Syria arouse the enmity of King Feisal of the Arabs. For his aid in WWI, the Allies have promised Feisal the kingship of Syria, Palestine and Trans-Jordania. This promise they have not kept however and the French are out to discredit or kill the Arab chieftain. To further their ends, an order is forged, ostensibly from Feisal to his Arab adherents which calls for a massacre of the Jews in Jerusalem. When this message is intercepted, Jimgrim rapidly swings into action. With Ramsden and Ross as volunteers, he matches wits and weapons with the powerful plotters who are financed by the French...(Jimgrim) proceeds to Damascus and smears the intrigue against Feisal. With a considerable amount of little known historical truth worked into the background, "The King in Check" (or as titled in this case "Affair in Araby") is one of the most colorful, fast-moving and exciting of Mr. Mundy's Jimgrim stories."While I love this blurb, it just can't convey the extent of intrigue that goes on in the novel. What the blurb mentions is just the bare outline of a story that is surprising in it's depth.
