Collected by Joseph Jacobs By Mariana Chaffee This is, in fact, the collection of stories that Joseph Jacobs collected in the late 19th or early 20th century, inspired by the work of the Brothers Grimm. Jacobs traveled throughout the countryside of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and he wrote the stories down as much as possible in the language in which they were told to him -- old fashioned folklore collection. These collections used to be available in Dover Editions, although I don't know if they are still. (Do Dover books ever go out of print???) The table of contents is not navigable, which could be a nuisance, but free is a good price. You could try constructing your own "table of contents" using bookmarks or highlights....The stories are enjoyable, and fun to read aloud to kids. I'd give it 5 stars if the table of contents were navigable, take off 2 for the nuisance factor, add one because it's free. Four seems fair.

Along with the classics (e.g. Jack the Giant Killer and Tom Thumb) there are lesser-known tales full of real suspense, action, ghosts, magic, realy wicked stepmothers, love lost, imps, and fairies. And no guns. It provides the little stressors that Disney doesn't, so that the effect is genuine - real anxiety, and real relief at the point of resolution. You can never be sure that there will be a wedding at the end of any story. The book has beautiful word-play and rhythm, along with classic sketched illustrations - A keeper for all time.

Twenty feet away, a stout, elderly woman interrupted the girl's persuasions. The elderly woman's back was turned, and the back--loose, bulging, and misshapen—began a convulsive heaving. "Gawd!" she cried out. "O Gawd!" She flung wild glances, like those of an entrapped animal, up and down the big whitewashed room that panted with heat and that was thickly humid with the steam that sizzled from the damp cloth under the irons of the many ironers. From the girls and women near her, all swinging irons steadily but at high pace, came quick glances, and labor efficiency suffered to the extent of a score of suspended or inadequate movements. The elderly woman's cry had caused a tremor of money-loss to pass among the piece-work ironers of fancy starch.

From Library Journal Far away from his snowy Yukon adventures, London set this 1913 novel in the warmth of California's green hills. It follows Billy and Saxon Roberts, who, after becoming disillusioned with labor difficulties, strike out on the road north to find a place where they can live close to the land. Some parts, I think the most typical for Jack London, are absent. (For example sport games and fighting in Weasel Park, Chapter IV, are not present in this edition.)I think the version can be used to comparative analysis by specialists in history of literature but if you want to take pleasure in reading I strongly recommend you to purchase another edition.

I pedaled through Glen Ellen and saw some of the missions. Since I am male, I could relate to the character of Billy. He is an early 20th century renaissance man. I never got bored with this book. It has a lot of personal meaning to me. I come from some of the "old stock" Billy and Saxon refer to. Tons of detail. I had to read it twice to get all the details. If you like northern California and want to know what it was like 100 years ago, read this.

It is extremely refreshing because it shows the good side of true love without that sickening sweetness so many love stories have... I read this book a few years back and read it again just recently. I am SIXTEEN. This book is definetly one that many can enjoy, no matter your age.

It is told by reflections of a young man and a young woman. The reader guesses that these two may have known each other in the past and often times their thoughts refer to once another. They often think of how simpler and happier things were when they were children.Wright's 12 facets of life are: Occupation, knowledge, ignorance, religion, tradition, temptation, life, death, failure, success and love. A chapter is devoted to each subject. Wright writes about how these items affect a person and define their character. He also expresses his opinion about what they have become in modern life. It appears he was upset at the woman entering into the workplace and thought it was a travesty to the home life.I only read about half of the book before becoming incredibly bored with it. There was no tension, no story, and the insights were rare and ponderous. This book might be worthy to pick up again and read a chapter, but reading it all the way through tested my patience and I had to put it down.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Unusual and Compelling By Steven Fantina A synoptic capsule of "Their Yesterdays" does not sound terribly enticing. The novel has no named central characters; the two protagonists are defined only as "the man" and the woman." The action is not chronological. The entire book is a series of flashbacks with each chapter devoted to a broad, theoretical topic like temptation, religion, success, failure, etc. There is very little dialogue and the exact whereabouts of the plot is never revealed. Still under the mastery of Harold Bell Wright, it works! The author of "Shepherd of the Hills" is able somehow to make the abstract diagram a satisfying, rewarding novel that rivals his other works. Why he ever attempted such a non-conventional approach is hard to imagine, but lovers of great literature are awfully glad that he did.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A strange approach to writing a novel By Bomojaz Most novelists write about characters who are "tested" by one or more of the more or less universally accepted "principles" of life (job success, success in love, learning from mistakes, etc.). This determines the book's conflict. But Wright chooses to write about the "principles" themselves, and is not concerned with character at all. It's as if Homer wrote about the characteristics of a great warrior but left Achilles out. It's a strange approach. He lists 13 "truly great things of life" (included are occupation, religion, temptation, failure, success, love, etc.), and each chapter in the book explores one "great thing" through a nameless man and woman (Everyman). It's a bloodless novel because the characters are mere puppets on a stage conveying the ideas behind Wright's 13 "great things." Wright was a minister before turning to novel writing full-time, and a lot of what he writes comes across as sermonizing. Although very popular in its day, this is not one of Wright's better efforts.

Drawn from personal family history, he captures the brutality and the compassion of the early pioneers and the Indian nations that they were dispossessing.Lewis Wetzel "Le vent de la mort", (Death Wind) is a prominent figure in this book. Wetzel is a genuine historical personage and is accurately portrayed as both a guardian to the border settlements and the Indian hater and killer he was known to be.The book follows the life and adventures of two brothers Jim and Joe, Jim a Christian missionary and Joe a gregarious newcomer to frontier life. Wetzel always known as a loner, develops a friendship with the young man Joe and trains him in the ways of forest woodcraft. All the while Jim struggles to strengthen and protect the already established Morvian Indian mission. All of this set against the intrigue of Indian politics, war and the rampaging murders and kidnappings of the white renegades Simon and Jim Girty.Although an historical novel, Zane Grey uses the various characters and happenings as a vehicle to give us a clear picture of the sentiment surrounding the precarious daily life for both the defenders of the Indian nations and those who acted as the American border rangers.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Hisrtorical Novel based on Fact. Late 1700 - to early 1800 By Kenneth G. Ramey Drawing upon ancestors notes, Zane Gray reconstructs the agony of America's initial transmontane western movement of the frontier away from the original colonies into the OHIO Valley where Indians and Whites contest for souls and Wetzel, and Indian hunter, pursues his cause in a most dramatic fashion. The book is a riveting account of true adventure the veiled backdrop of which is the continued occupation of the teritory occupied by British and Americans. An excellent introduction to further study of the the then misunderstood goal of Manifest Destiny.

Over forty legends of the film business recount their first trip to Hollywood. Actors, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, and editors-half of them women-recall the long joinery, their initial impressions, their struggle to find work, and the love for making movies that kept them going. Drawn from letters, speeches, oral histories, memoirs, and autobiographies-and illustrated with over sixty vintage photographs and illustrations-each story is intimate and unique, but all speak to our universal need to follow our passions and be part of a community that feeds the soul. This anthology is edited and annotated by award-winning author and film historian Cari Beauchamp, the only person to twice be named as an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Scholar. Of MY FIRST TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, Academy-Award-winning film preservationist, historian, and author Kevin Brownlow writes: "What every film fan years for-first-hand, eyewitness accounts of a Hollywood none of us can remember and all of us wish we'd known. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Filled with wonderful Hollywood anecdotes By Kristine Somerville Readers don’t have to be hardcore film buffs to enjoy Cari Beauchamp’s My First Time in Hollywood. There’s enough good storytelling here about the early days of film to interest a casual enthusiast. The anthology offers up stories from “the pioneers, dreamers, and misfits who made the movies.” In the line-up are familiar names—Lillian Gish, Lionel Barrymore, Cecil B. DeMille and Ben Hecht—and people who might mistakenly be considered bit players such as Mrs. D.W. Griffith (Linda Arvidson), Evelyn Scott, and Lenore Coffee. The more than forty stories offered in this collection depict often brave, and always unique journeys as the mostly actors, writers, and directors navigate the strange new place called Hollywood when it was nothing more than a thinly populated village. Most memorably there’s Mary Pickford’s recollection of arriving in LA to work for Biograph. Their makeshift studio was void of any luxury—just an acre of ground and a large wooden platform. Former theater actor Hobart Bosworth tells of the primitive filmmaking techniques. A thousand feet had to be shot in a single day: “all hurried, makeshift and in a measure confused.” Noel Coward spent just ten days in Hollywood. It was about all he could take of what he called a “gigantic pleasure park.” His tales of Chaplin, Gilbert and Swanson are brief and biting, in true Coward form.Beauchamp is one of today’s best film historians with a particular interest in women and film. Memorable works of hers include Without Lying Down: Francis Marion and the Powerful Women of Early Hollywood and Anita Loos Rediscovered.

It might be the names such as Swanson and DeMille that catch your attention, but some of the great stories here come from the writers such as Ben Hecht who make you laugh out loud when he says his first day in Hollywood was like a year in Siberia and then goes on to recount a series of parties that include what he calls a “sausage” fest. Others I had never heard of such as the set decorator Kay Thackrey and art director Laurence Irving give behind the scenes tales from the set that give you a new appreciation of the skills and attention to detail that goes into making movies.

By Julie Anyone interested in the history of how "Hollywood" , with all its' glitz and glamour got its ' start ,should read this book. It goes way back to the beginning when the old-time wannabe stars made their way out there to see their name in lights . They start out with the basics , a dirt lot or small building that they use to make the background setting .It tells of many people from stars ,to writers, to directors, to behind the scenes people who were a part of making Hollywood what it became .There are also lots of nice photos in the book. I especially liked reading about some of the Golden Oldies ,like Mary Pickford .

Francione's work is very devoted to narcisstic ways of lifting himself up and maligning everyone who doesn't worship him as infallible. He's done more damage to animal liberation and rights movements than many animal agricultural groups have.

Despite the title this does NOT instruct you on how to write your own will By Amazon Customer This is the most basic of overviews of the components of a will and does not actually give you any specific details, formats, or examples for writing a will. For instance as instruction on "how to write your own will" it recommends that you download a software program or consult an attorney. If you are looking for a book that will instruct you on how to write your own will this is not it.

Taking the mystery out of the last will and testament By excellentwheels Now I know no one likes to think about death and it’s not like I’m an old man or anything. I’m only in my early 30s. However, I’m not the type of guy that likes to leave things unfinished, or until the last minute and recently all the talk about healthcare and life insurance floating around all over the news. Also got me thinking about my last will and testament now as I say I don’t plan on actually needing one anytime soon. However, I view a last will and testament as though it is just as important as life and health insurance because honestly you never know when your time is up. And honestly, it’s a pretty important subject as funerals cost thousands of dollars as well as medical expenses, etc. and because of this I started looking into how to put together a last will and testament it would be practical for my current lifestyle and age, but could be updated as necessary to reflect the growth of the family or other responsibilities.Wanting to know more about the process of creating a last will and testament. I went looking for some basic entry-level information and came across this book while searching Amazon’s website (it’s my favorite online bookstore) and I’m glad I did this little 29 page volume contained everything I wanted to know about the proper way to create a binding last will and testament. This book covers everything from the fundamentals of understanding how a will works and your legal rights and responsibilities of a last will and testament, as well as other information such as how to keep the cost low (as attorneys are generally required to create a legally recognized last will and testament) as well as things such as keeping your will, up to date and how to create a living will. A living will, can also contain things like a DNR (do not resuscitate) or other answers to medical questions such as donating your organs or tissues or what to do with your care if you develop a cognitive memory problem such as Alzheimer’s or brain trauma and who in your family would like to have power of attorney and be capable of making such important decisions on your behalf. These are all things, a will can do, and this book also includes a few things that a will can be used for that you might not even think about such as donating to a charity or setting up the scholarship or something of that nature. All in all, I’m very pleased with my purchase of this book. It answered all my questions in a straightforward and distinct manner that did not require an advanced legal degree to understand. Although some further research on my part is definitely going to be required. I now feel confident enough with the help from this book to start constructing my own last will and testament.

Midwest journalist Chris Clayton examines the conflict in rural America over climate change, farming and the increasing pressures on food production. Clayton's reporting highlights the critical nature of agriculture in the country's struggle over finding direction mitigating greenhouse gases and adapting to a more volatile climate. The Elephant in the Cornfield explains rural perceptions of climate change, resistance to the science and the outright push to fight attempts to deal with greenhouse-gas emissions. Clayton looks at the pitched lobbying battle over failed climate legislation in 2009 and 2010 and how cap-and-trade became an almost toxic concept for farmers who are increasingly threatened by more extreme weather while also representing one of the few industries able to pull carbon dioxide from the air and sink it into the soil. The Elephant in the Cornfield also takes the complex science of climate change and breaks it down by detailing research going back 50 years on greenhouse gases. This book essentially serves as Clayton's journal as an agricultural reporter covering political battles inside the Beltway. At the same time, he explores the story of farmers, scientists, activists and corporate America in trying to develop a more sustainable food system. Climate change gives rural Americans a chance to save the world, but many refuse to see potential. The Elephant in the Cornfield makes the case that America’s cornfields hold some solutions to dealing with a hotter planet. Yet, political infighting and the embrace of climate denial keep farmers divided. In the process, the festering debates over science and political solutions risk the country's ability to help feed a growing world and protect the environment. The Elephant in the Cornfield highlights the role agricultural lobbies, corporations and farmers have played in the battle over climate change from the time President Obama was elected right up to the Paris climate agreement in December 2015.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent and understandable review of a complicated emotional topic. By Michelle Kohn This book is well researched, well written and interesting. The book is broken into two parts, the federal policy half and then the more practical discussion about agriculture and climate change and how they interact. I was grateful the history of climate change and related legislation, however it got a little long for my interest level. The second half of the book was informative. I feel that Chris really understands the nuance of the subject and was able to explain that to the reader. He was also able to paint an unemotional picture of the debate and where key players fall and why. I purchased this book looking for a deeper understanding of the subject and that's exactly what I got.

By David R As the father of three kids, this book is a welcome relief to help educate my kids about money and the financial system in general. This is not a practical "how to teach kids to spend/save" type of book but rather an education on everything they should know about money, the stock market, credit cards, currencies and more. Everything in this book will have a direct impact on their future and the bulk of what is talked about in the book is not taught in school. The book is written in a very easy-to- understand and digestible format for both kids and adults. I found myself learning about topics that I have "pretended" to know about for a long time so many adults will get as much out of it as the kids. I will be making sure that my 7th and 8th grade sons read this book over the coming months and am confident they will be smarter for it!

I would recommend this book without hesitation to parents and even adults who need to become more financially savvy. While I think of myself as a fiscally-responsible person, I was intimidated by the world of finance. Until I read Blue Chip Kids, I didn't know what puts and calls were and a lot of the other topics covered. This book presents concepts about money, investing and the stock market in such a simple way, a fifth grader can understand it. Actually that's not true, a third grader can understand it! My 9 year old started reading it a few days ago and is already on chapter 4. She feels accomplished that she's reading it so quickly (the big print and entertaining illustrations help with that). We talk about what she's read after she puts the book down for the day and I'm so impressed about how much she's retained. It's helping to outline a conversation that I'd have no idea where to start on my own and I'm confident that by the time she's done reading it, she'll have knowledge she'll use for a lifetime and be more "money-smart" than a lot of adults out there. This book is an invaluable teaching tool for parents and I'd love to see concepts like this taught in our schools. Since they aren't (at least as is the case in my kids' school), I truly feel parents have to do their part to provide this education to their children to ensure they're giving them the tools necessary to become financially independent and financially SUCCESSFUL adults. Rupert Saint Leger inherits his uncle's estate worth more than one million pounds, on condition that he live for a year in his uncle's castle in the Land of the Blue Mountains on the Dalmatian coast. There Rupert tries to win the trust of the conservative mountaineer population by using his fortune to buy them modern arms (from a South American country that has unexpectedly found itself at peace) for their fight against Turkish invasion . One wet night, he is visited in his room in the castle by a pale woman wearing a wet shroud, seeking warmth. He lets her dry herself before his fire, and she flees before morning. She visits several more times, all at night, and they hardly speak, but he falls in love with her, despite thinking she is a vampire. Just what is her secret?

Jenkins I am with the publisher and am writing to note that contrary to the way Amazon is advertising this book as of 8/20/12, it is NOT an abridged edition. This volume contains the complete, unabridged text of the novel, taken from the scarce 1909 first edition and includes a new introduction, annotations, and supplemental materials. And, by the way, like nearly everything else Stoker wrote, including "The Snake's Pass" (1890), "The Mystery of the Sea," (1902), and of course "Dracula" (1897), this is a really fun and fast read with some very memorable parts. If you enjoyed Stoker's other books, you're sure to like this one.

It is just as likely that history will continue to view Stoker as a “one work wonder” even though he wrote and published a dozen novels and novellas, a number of short stories, and some non-fiction work. The Lady of the Shroud (1909) is one of Stoker’s last works and its claim to fame is that in it he appears to be reverting to his successful supernatural, vampiric roots. Such really isn’t the case, however. There are some similarities to The Lady of the Shroud and Stoker’s earlier masterpiece. Both stories are told through a similar narrative structure—a series of letters and journal entries of various characters as well as through pseudo documents and news articles. Both have allusions to the undead. The beginning of The Lady of the Shroud opens with an excerpt from an “article” from the Journal of Occultism which includes a ghostly, vampire-like image of a woman who mysteriously appears to a crew at sea near the coastline only to then disappear. The tone of the novel being established, The Lady of the Shroud then takes a drastic turn in a series of letters having to do with an incredible inheritance with some very unique conditions. Rupert Sent Leger is to inherit from his uncle Roger Melton “a fortune which has no equal in amount in Europe, even... amongst crowned heads.” In order to win the inheritance, however, Rupert must agree to “reside for a period of at least six months to begin not later than three months from the reading” of the will “in the Castle of Vissarion in the Land of the Blue Mountains” and in order to win the entire estate must “continue to reside there in part for a period of one year.” The letters setting the stage for future events in The Lady of the Shroud are slow reading and somewhat cumbersomely done although Stoker shows a flair for satire as he comically brings to life the elitism of the Melton family and their immense dislike of poor relations. As he does in Dracula (with the otherwise minor character of Quincey Morris), Stoker creates a protagonist, Rupert Sent Leger, that is the ideal of heroism and masculinity (and with a physique similar to Stoker’s own).Roger Melton is sure of his nephew’s future (especially given his inheritance) and states in a posthumous letter to his nephew that the battle-torn area of unrest, “the Blue Mountains” is Rupert’s “ground” upon which the young man will be able to prove himself. It isn’t until Rupert journeys to Vissarion in Book II of The Lady of the Shroud that Stoker truly introduces his reader to the gothic aspects of his novel. Much like the homeland of Count Dracula, Vissarion is filled with beautiful yet rugged landscapes. The inhabitants of the area, Rupert declares, “are in reality the most primitive people I ever met—the most fixed to their own ideas, which belong to centuries back...” The people are “so proud, so haughty, so reserved, so distant, so absolutely fearless, so honourable, so hospitable.” It is also in Vissarion that Rupert first learns of the inexplicable mystery of the “dead woman floating in a coffin” from one of the eye-witnesses. Rupert writes to his Scottish Highlander Aunt Janet (who is going to join him at the castle) “that our new home is not without superstitious interests of its own. It is rather a nice idea, is it not, to have a dead woman cruising round our promontory in a coffin?” The castle (a typical Gothic archetype) Rupert inherits from his uncle is “so vast” that Rupert “can’t describe it in detail… the belief that this place is haunted, [is] conveyed in a thousand ways of speech and inference.” And then he meets “a ghost or spiritual manifestation of some kind which moved in [a] silent way”... the Lady in the Shroud.Told as it is in the form of diary entries, letters, and diverse documents, the story of The Lady of the Shroud gets narrated by various voices and perspectives. This narrative format has events unravel slowly. Stoker is at his narrative best when he maintains longer diary or letter entries, allowing a single character to maintain the story-line for a period of time, a device he employs more once he has Rupert established in Vissarion. It is at this point, too, that the narrative begins to build momentum as Rupert becomes convinced that his ghostly visitor, for a variety of reasons (the least of which not being his life-long indoctrination into the occult from being told stories by his Aunt Janet) is a vampire— “one of that horrid race that survives death and carries on a life-in-death existence eternally and only for evil.” Complicating matters, Rupert has fallen in love with the Lady in the Shroud at nearly first sight—without even knowing her name.Running parallel with the story of Rupert and the Lady in the Shroud (along with Aunt Janet’s distressing and ghastly “veesions” of death and disaster for her nephew) is the story of the “troubled and restless” mountaineers who fear invasion of their homeland by neighboring Turks. Thus, nights Rupert reserves for the Lady because “the night is her time of freedom” while the “days have been full of national movement” with “the mountaineers... evidently organizing themselves.”Two-thirds of the way through The Lady of the Shroud Stoker spills the beans and the truth about who the Lady is (as well as what she is and the reason for her vampire-like behavior). At this point, Stoker’s novel takes a dramatic turn and becomes a story that resembles something much more from the pen of Jules Verne or H. G. Wells than from the noted creator of one of gothic horror’s greatest nightmares, Count Dracula. Fantastic, futuristic areoplanes and warships come into play as does nation building, allowing the “splendid land” of the fictitious Blue Mountains and its “freedom-loving people [to] flourish and become a power in [the] world.” Ironically, Stoker was writing this at a time when Europe was on the verge of catastrophe—World War I—and the story takes place in 1907-1908. Still, The Lady of the Shroud has an almost fairy-tale, story-book ending.Undoubtedly, Stoker’s finest and most characteristic writing comes in the middle third of The Lady of the Shroud. During many portions of Rupert’s diary, Stoker evokes some of the same fear and imagery that readers are familiar with from Jonathan Harker’s journal in Dracula as he comes to realize the horrors that lurk for him in the Count’s castle as well as the hideous monster that is his host. In both works Stoker floods the reader with riveting, sensuous details that vividly bring the eerie setting to life. The last third of The Lady of the Shroud suffers in comparison to the middle section. The unbelievable mixture of near-primitive means of communication and hand-held weapons as compared to the almost science-fiction like elements of the plot create a difficult juxtaposition. Another small, but irksome curiosity is Aunt Janet’s Scottish accent. It is reproduced verbatim in Rupert’s journal (at times almost to the extent that the passages need translating), but when readers are treated to pages from Aunt Janet’s own diaries, her language is pretty much the same as everyone else’s whose “writing” appears in the novel with only an occasional run of dialect that comes and goes.Less successful than Dracula, The Lady of the Shroud remains an intriguing tale and valuable to those who wish there was more of the master’s novel-length horror fiction to read. Curiously, The Lady of the Shroud has often been printed in edited versions. Valancourt Books presents the original unabridged text, with a new introduction by Sarah E. Maier, annotations, the text of contemporary reviews, a chronology of Bram Stoker's life and works, a bibliography, and Stoker's important 1908 article "The Censorship of Fiction."

This book was, in short, a trudge. It does have some redeeming quality---it maintains the same creepy, gothic tone found in Dracula, and the plot is pleasantly surprising with many twists and turn: altogether it's wonderfully original, however...The actual writing is boring. The narrating characters are not very likeable, and there is just a lot of unnecessary fluff and repetition. The plot is grossly over stretched and sometimes confusing as it dwells on irrelevant moments and flies over major plot points. It takes a long time to read. I can see why this book stayed out of print so long...
