HOW HEALTHCARE IS HARMING NURSES AND DRIVING UP COSTS! “On average, a nurse experiences 6.5 process failures every eight hours. Associated costs range broadly and are factor dependent… [but for] a typical patient census of just 70 percent, nationwide, US Hospitals waste more than $45 billion each year to lost productivity.” -The Scandal of Healthcare: Nurses, Waste and Customer Service Over the last decade, healthcare veterans Colin Baird and David Sundahl have spent thousands of hours working with nurses. Their research has led them to the inescapable conclusion that the key to solving healthcare’s problems lies in better working conditions for nurses. Nurses are five times as likely as workers in other industries to be dissatisfied at work. This means nurses are leaving the profession. Consequently the US spends “$9.5 billion each year to fund the high cost of nursing turnover that the current system creates--enough to fully fund the U.S. Department of Commerce for a year!” Today’s nurse is constantly in motion, trying to make sure bad things don’t happen to patients—or themselves. Recent reports about the rate of injury to nurses are the tip of the iceberg. An average nurse has only 16 minutes per hour of face-to-face time to care for six or more patients. The frenetic pace of work, along with the operational chaos of a modern hospital, are the principal causes of the US healthcare industry’s lackluster quality and financial performance. The overburden nurses experience is bad for them and worse for patients. Quality outcomes for patients in hospitals and clinics is principally determined by how well nurses are able to coordinate their care. Baird and Sundahl show how, by treating nurses like customers, healthcare delivery organizations can start to overcome these deficits now.

It is for the Leaders and Managers that create those internal processes that the nurses work in. This is about Hospital process failures and how the nurse staff runs faster to try to take care of Patients while trying to trick the systems into working. Broken systems, that even if they partially work, are out of sync and are user unfriendly to say the least. There is no coordinated effort to fix them. It is just, keep fighting the fires day in and day out. Both Nurse and Physicians are frustrated and probably so is the hospital management staff. Management staff don't know how to fix this and stay within budget. But the worse part, this has been common knowledge since 1999 when the paper " To Err is Human" came out. Now there are more hospitals are being built and more people that die daily. 1000+ people a day die in hospitals from avoidable causes. It is now the leading cause of death in the U.S. -Yes - going into the hospital! That's about 400,000 people a Year in 2013! How come we don't see that in the news every night? Must read!

I think it is an accurate depiction of what our healthcare has become. As a matter of fact, it elicited an emotional response - which shows it is well written. The author takes you on the floor, on the front line - and accurately shows what is going on. Our country is lagging behind in healthcare. We keep using band aids when we need to prevent the injuries/ illnesses. Invest to save. I enjoyed this book for a couple reasons, it showed me why I left bedside nursing - and it is a great step to assist healthcare decision makers understand, or get a glimpse of what is going on - and why their decisions are so important. Ask front line staff - value their opinions. We, as healthcare clinicians routinely fix and solve problems creatively - but we are getting very tired. Time to turn it around. Inevitably we, or our loved ones, will be present in that hospital bed someday - who do you want taking care of you? Thank you Colin for sharing.

How to find balance By Jennie L Kammerman I have been working for a Level 1 Trauma Center for the past 19 years and have to address these issues daily. How to balance out the needs of the patients with the needs of the staff caring for them. I found this book to be very helpful and true to it's title. All too many times Leadership and Management can not see the big picture when making budgetary decisions. We are all in agreement, patient care is important, otherwise why would we have chosen this profession. The needs of the staff caring for them should also be considered and this book is a copulation of what the authors observed. I reccommend this book.

Shawn Jayroe’s passion for horses and desire to help the underdog was instilled during her charmed childhood. Later, when the shy yet determined self-made businesswoman witnessed mistreatment of the beautiful majestic equines, a deep need to protect those without a voice begged her to action. Shawn rallied troops from the community to bring her vision to life, and with dedicated volunteers and financial donations, a miraculous life-saving refuge was gradually pieced together, forming RVR Horse Rescue. But one result Shawn hadn’t anticipated was the magical effect the horrifically abused animals would imprint on their caregivers, blurring the lines of who was saving whom. Author Shirley Alarie delivers the riveting saga of Shawn Jayroe and her army of Horse Angels who are tackling the unspoken issue of equine neglect and abuse one desperate animal at a time. A Healing Haven is an inspiring true story and a beautiful reminder that it is in giving that we receive life’s greatest blessings.

A Healing Haven: Saving Horses and Humans at RVR Horse Rescue (Lemons to Lemonade Book 2), by Shirley Alarie

Review Unbelievably emotionally inspiring! I couldn't put it down until I had finished. As a mental health professional it spoke to all that I believe about the strength of connections between humans and animals. The book is so well written and enjoyable to read. Thank you to all who shared their personal stories in order to help others. Most importantly, thank you all, especially you Shawn, for your passion and perseverance in saving these beautiful animals. You are an inspiration to the "the change we wish to see in the world" (Ghandi) Taken from GreatNonprofits.org, RVR Horse Rescue

From the Author This project was a profoundly emotional experience for me. When I began to explore possibilities for my next book, I was drawn to an "animal" theme. I pursued an opportunity to write about a small therapeutic horse ranch and was disappointed when the project fell through. However, a couple of months later, my husband was reading about my recently published breast cancer guide, The Road Paved in Pink, in a local newspaper insert. When he turned the page, he discovered another article featuring a heartwarming story about a horse rescue ranch."Where's that?" I asked him. Neither of us had a clue. In the year since we'd moved into the neighborhood, we'd never heard of RVR Horse Rescue, but it was within five miles of our home. The following week, this urban-girl showed up on the ranch to muck stalls and fill water buckets, all in the presence of majestic and beautiful thousand pound creatures - completely foreign and frightening to me. But it was the type of opportunity I had dreamt of since my childhood.RVR Horse Rescue is a non-profit organization run by an army of volunteers. Their mission is to intervene, rescue, rehabilitate, and provide sanctuary for neglected, abused, abandoned, and traumatized horses. I quickly realized was a legitimate and amazing haven of healing and approached Shawn Jayroe, the founder and owner, about her interest in writing her story. To my delight, she accepted immediately. Like so many others, Shawn had always intended to write her story, but hectic daily demands kept taking precedence.I can say with complete honesty that this project changed my life. I knew as soon as I walked through the gates of the ranch that it was a special place. The hectic world of lofty materialistic goals, financial responsibilities, unrealistic deadlines, social media drama, and stories of violence invading our nation's schools and neighborhoods dropped away as if I'd teleported to another planet. The serene and quiet beauty drew me into its enchanting spell. This was the type of place and opportunity I had dreamed of during my harried days of life in the corporate manufacturing world, making plastic panels for various applications, such as windows. Big company politics, deadlines, back-stabbing, and turf guarding had sucked the life out of me, and I believe contributed in some way to my breast cancer diagnosis. Even though we joked that "It's only plastic", it was a dog-eat-dog world on a treadmill that kept gaining speed. I could never see a life beyond plastic. That is, until I walked through the gates of RVR. It suddenly brought the meaning and purpose I had been missing.Beyond the peaceful environment itself and the beautiful animals, I fell in love with the people. RVR Horse Angels, a fitting description of the volunteers who work tirelessly to save the abused and neglected animals. People who volunteer around the clock to sit with a dying horse. People who do whatever it takes to do the right thing. People who work hard for a worthy cause, then kick back together in fellowship. It is like a huge family, including the normal drama and special characters, but still a family.I could never have anticipated how my life would change when my husband handed me the newspaper and said, "Look at this article about a horse rescue ranch."A Healing Haven is a beautiful addition to my Lemons to Lemonade series.

About the Author Soul-searching after a fight with breast cancer sparked Shirley Alarie's writing adventure. Her work is focused on meaningful non-fiction subjects. The Lemons to Lemonade series of "triumph over tragedy" novels and her blog, A Dose of Faith, Hope, and Love, are meant to sprinkle positive messages into a world entrenched in negativity. Check her out. Be inspired!

By gadgets I have been fortunate enough to not only read this amazing book but have been able to volunteer at RVR and saw for myself the incredible miracles that are performed daily in saving the lives of these magnificent animals. I have seen horses brought in that any other rescue ranch would refuse to take - instead they would throw their hands up and not even try to save a life. Not Shawn and not all of her amazing volunteers. The before and after pictures of Romeo on the cover are just the beginning-there are so many others. This book will make you look at animal rescue organizations in a away that most people never take the time to do. Then please take that knowledge, and don't ever stop trying to help these magnificent creatures in anyway possible.

It takes you beyond the gates and the pretty horses playing and grazing in the pastures into the real world of rescue. Most people are unaware that there is so much cruelty toward these majestic animals. Those who love them can't imagine what fate awaits them in the wrong hands. I know many of the horses I read about and cried as I was reminded of what they had been through. They are different animals once they have been rehabbed and their personalities flourish, so it's easy to forget the torment they've known. Thanks to RVR and the caring volunteers who have love for each and every one of them.

By islandlady I have read blogs from different horse rescues and sanctuaries, but I grew up in Tampa and know someone that volunteeers there, so this really caught my heart. I had horses as a teenager, but my parents sold my mare and her colt after I was in a bad car accident. I know the mare went to a good home, so I was happy for her, even though they would not let me close to her. I worried about the colt, especially many years later when I learned how many were treated, and worse. I think it is so incredible what these people do and I would give anything to be a part of it, if I were not so far away.

From the Back Cover Shining coat flashing in the sun. Silky mane rippling in the wind. A toss of the head and the stamp of a hoof.Few of God's creatures are as noble and soul-stirring as the horse. Even those of us who aren't lucky enough to have horses of our own seem to have an innate desire to connect with these beautiful, regal beasts. As children we read stories about them, collected models of them, and tacked posters of them up on our walls. Throughout history they have carried us and calmed us, pulled our loads and pulled at our heartstrings. They give us a taste of wildness and yet make us feel at home. In this inspiring collection, you'll meet horses who show up at the right time, who help their humans learn important truths, and who rescue the very people who rescued them. These true stories of horses and the people who love them are sometimes touching, sometimes humorous, and sometimes miraculous. Always they are inspiring, like the horses themselves. They will touch your heart, renew your spirit, and show you that surely God had us in mind when he created these magnificent creatures.Callie Smith Grant is the editor of The Cat in the Window, The Cat on My Lap, The Dog Next Door, and The Dog at My Feet. My Uncle Harry picked out an old, gentle mare for me, a pretty Appaloosa, white and spotted. She proved a dream horse for an inexperienced rider. I just had to hold the reigns, and she obediently stayed in line with the other horses and riders. My first trail ride turned eventful, however, when coming down a steep hill, I hit a snag of barbed wire that I did not see. The horse took off in a wild run causing me to drop the reigns. I grabbed the horn of the saddle and held on for dear life as the horse passed the other horses careening down the hill approaching a stream bed.My uncle yelled at me to cry, "Ho." I barely whispered the word and then managed to yell it. The mare came to a sudden stop. Somehow, I managed to stay in the saddle. Shaken, I grabbed the reigns and turned her back toward the other riders. Looking back, I saw another rider getting off the ground. She'd been thrown when her horse had reared up in fear.Despite, the few minutes of terror, I enjoyed the rest of the ride. As we neared home, my little mare sped up in excitement. I gripped the reigns as she galloped the last few yards. Then I groomed and fed her after taking her saddle off.Reading The Horse of My Heart brought that special day back to life for me. This beautiful book is excellent for the horse lover in your life. I especially believe tween and teen girls will love it. Callie Smith Grant compiles a series of true, inspiring stories about these beautiful creatures that will touch your heart. The stories illustrate that horses magical creatures full of wonder and love.We meet horses of all kinds: sweet, loving, funny, heroic, and brave. From an old, retired horse who doesn't want to come out from the pasture to needy and neglected horses, these horses win over your heart immediately. They touch and influence their humans in so many different ways.Contributors to this anthology include many well-known authors such as Lauraine Snelling, Susy Flory, Rebecca E. Ondov, Wanda Dyson, and Sarah Parshall Perry. These true stories of horses and the people who love them are sometimes touching, sometimes humorous, and sometimes miraculous.Callie Smith Grant is the editor of other great animal books including A Prince among Dogs and A Dickens of a Cat. She is also the author of several nonfiction books for young readers and adults as well as many animal-themed stories and poems which can be seen in Guideposts anthologies and in magazines such as Small Farmers Journal. This book was provided by Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for my review. Horses Are Loving By Amazon Customer My reason for wanting to read "The Horse of My Heart" by Callie Smith Grant was to learn why people loved horses as pets so passionately. It's never been my great dream or passion to own one. Perhaps, this is because I've only rode on two horses in my life and for thirty minutes or less each time. The stories collected by Callie Smith Grant really reached the heart of my questions. Can such large animals make good pets? Can they teach us lessons of life like cats or dogs? I didn't think about the shortcomings of horses either. Some of the authors of the stories talk about injuries, etc. The next time I see or pet a horse I think my feelings will have become deeper and healthier because of this book.I especially enjoyed the story about the old white mare. She is thirty years old. At the end of the story, the horse's age is not a thought. The lesson is that age doesn't matter whether it is a horse or a person. The love for Snowbird and appreciation of her took a while. It didn't happen overnight. First, the family saw all of Snowbird's faults. I could see the family's growth throughout the story.I never took in to account the fact that horses can run and can do it unexpectedly. One horse runs with its owner. She falls. She ends up with seventy-two stitches in her cheek! This changed her dream in to a nightmare. She became frightened of horses. In time, her love returned for horses. I suppose it is true that cold relationships can become warm ones again. Our pain can become less memorable. There are many other stories in The Horses of My Heart by Callie Smith Grant. There are breeds of horses I have never heard of or seen. I wanted to see the photographs of those horses. For example, there is an Arabian Quarter horse and Fresian Assante and a Shetland.I will never forget the girl who read to her horse until she was old enough to ride him and take care of him. She read him picture books. I could only imagine how cute she and the horse must have looked. Also, at the end of the book there is a short biography for each author of a story. This felt wonderful. After reading the first story, I immediately wanted to know more about the author. There is a wonderful quote by Alice Walker on one page. It's set off in a block. "Horses make a landscape look beautiful." There are other blocked off words about horses like the ones which carry the buggies along in Amish country. Learning about horses is fun and a really big subject. I look forward to my next ride. bakerpublishinggroup.com/revellbakerpublishinggroup.com/books/the-horse-of-my-heart

This collection of over thirty true stories will touch your heart. These tales cover the gamut of children's horses, to horses that have played a major role in the life of adults.Wanda Dyson remembers the day a horse named Lady somehow opened her front door, and let herself into the house on a mission of mercy. Lady then led Wanda to a badly injured horse.Shirley Zeller recounts what it was like to grow up on a remote horse ranch in North Dakota. Despite it taking place in the 20th century, her experiences could have been with the cowboys of the 1800's.Sherri Gallagher shares idyllic days she, and her friend spent on horseback. While munching peanut butter sandwiches and homemade cookies, they explored fields, forests and everything in between, all while atop their horses. Not all the horses were owned by the people who adored them. Claudia Wolfe St. Clair relates the love her mom had for the great racehorse, Secretariat. She was so enamored with him, that a surprise Christmas visit to see the famous racer filled her with joy. Not only did she see him, Secretariat came right up to her mom, and let her touch him. The thrill she got from that still resonates off the pages today.Hold your horses, is that right?Despite knowing very little about horses, these stories were a delight to read. Not only was I entertained, I learned some "horse facts." For instance, I was very surprised to find out the type of horse that lots of Amish people get to pull their buggies. I also smiled when I discovered why, Macaroni "The White House Pony," had to have chicken wire around him.I really liked this book, despite knowing nothing about horses before I read the first page. If you don't have any experience with horses, you might consider changing that after reading The Horse of My Heart. This will be a treasure to those who already love these four-footed friends. These are all short stories, so they can be read a little bit at a time, or the entire book can be read straight through. Either way, it will be a real pleasure, even more so, since there are no objectionable scenes or language. This book will leave a smile on your face long after it is finished. I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys well-written or true stories--and most certainly to horse lovers. The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of The Horse of My Heart through Revell Publishing for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal. Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment.Callie Smith Grant has edited a number of animal books including: The Cat on My Lap, The Cat in the Window, The Dog Next Door, and The Dog at My Feet.

Review

"Horwitz has been developing his ideas about classical liberalism and the family for decades. The wait is now over, and it has been well worth it. This highly original and well argued book provides a formidable challenge to all those whose knee-jerk reaction is that a free market society must be bad for families. Let the debates begin!" - Bruce Caldwell, Professor and Director, Center for the History of Political Economy, Duke University, USA

"Thank goodness for an economist who understands that all parenting decisions involve risks and rewards, and who defends those of us who refuse to parent from a place of total risk aversion. What a refreshing outlook!" - Lenore Skenazy, author of Free-Range Kids, blog and book

Most works on the family come from the right, in which case the reader can anticipate a hagiographical treatment of the American archetype from the 1950s, or from the left, in which case you can expect ideological screeds about how confining and personality destroying the family can be. Where is the book that examines the family and its history as an evolving product of human choice, one that serves an important social function but cannot be planned by public policy? In sort, where is the genuine liberal treatment of this topic? This is what Professor Horwitz has done, and he has done it in the context of Hayek's evolutionary social theory. For this reason, this book is a joy to read: an actual balanced treatment that doesn't have a right/left axe to grind. In the course of the narrative, one discovers a huge range of interesting research into the history of public policy and how it has interfered (for or against) in an institution that truly precedes the state. It not only fills an important gap in the literature. It helps us see the family in a different light than before.

The utterly gripping story of the most outrageous case of cyber piracy prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

A former U.S. Navy intelligence officer, David Locke Hall was a federal prosecutor when a bizarre-sounding website, CRACK99, came to his attention. It looked like Craigslist on acid, but what it sold was anything but amateurish: thousands of high-tech software products used largely by the military, and for mere pennies on the dollar. Want to purchase satellite tracking software? No problem. Aerospace and aviation simulations? No problem. Communications systems designs? No problem. Software for Marine One, the presidential helicopter? No problem. With delivery times and customer service to rival the world’s most successful e-tailers, anybody, anywhere―including rogue regimes, terrorists, and countries forbidden from doing business with the United States―had access to these goods for any purpose whatsoever.

But who was behind CRACK99, and where were they? The Justice Department discouraged potentially costly, risky cases like this, preferring the low-hanging fruit that scored points from politicians and the public. But Hall and his colleagues were determined to find the culprit. They bought CRACK99's products for delivery in the United States, buying more and more to appeal to the budding entrepreneur in the man they identified as Xiang Li. After winning his confidence, they lured him to Saipan―a U.S. commonwealth territory where Hall’s own father had stormed the beaches with the marines during World War II. There they set up an audacious sting that culminated in Xiang Li's capture and imprisonment. The value of the goods offered by CRACK99? A cool $100 million.

An eye-opening look at cybercrime and its chilling consequences for national security, CRACK99 reads like a caper that resonates with every amazing detail.

Review “A crackling good tale, well-told in Hall’s confiding, thoughtful, and humorous tone.” (Eloise Kinney - Booklist)“A quirky tale of international pursuit through a legal labyrinth with unsettling implications regarding proliferation of ominous technologies.” (Kirkus Reviews)“A super-charged, electrifying story. CRACK99 reads like a bestselling thriller!” (Brad Thor, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Code of Conduct)“A gripping and sobering account of the hemorrhage of high-end American computer programs into the Chinese internet black market…A riveting story.” (Dennis Blair, former director of national intelligence and co-chairman, Intellectual Property Commission)“A rollicking true tale of high-level undercover cyber espionage in which Hall puts every bit of his extensive experience and investigative skills into catching a cyber-pirate. His stories of teaming with Homeland Security agents to double-cross a Chinese cyber criminal are, in a word, sensational.” (Retired FBI Special Agent Robert K. Wittman, author of Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World’s Stolen Treasures)

Top Gun Federal attorney attempts to write about technology warfare against the Chinese Red Scare By vanner1 If you work or study IT in any capacity, the writing in this book is going to drive you up a wall. I understand that the author is an attorney, not a techie, but damn...he sounds like the kind of user who struggles with operating an ipad. It makes me want to see what jobs are available in the government for cyber defense because I had a better grasp on the situation than the author did in a lot of places. For example, the "rogue employee" theory was totally bogus from the get-go and demonstrated a lack of understanding in how software works. It's disheartening to know that our government wasted money and resources chasing this false lead due to incompetence. But that's also not surprising. As another reviewer mentioned, the "cool guy" writing style is very much a turn-off as well. I don't know if it's because he was in the Navy, but I picture a Top Gun-esque Tom Cruise writing the book. Another aspect of the writing that I didn't enjoy was the "red scare" type of the tone that the author used. Even though government-sponsored hacking was never proved in the case with Xiang Li, the author seemed to take special delight in talking at length about Chinese government sponsored hacking. Don't get me wrong, I have no agreements with the Chinese government in policy or rhetoric, but I think that painting a correlation like that is very reminiscent of the McCarthy era "Red Scare" propaganda that is so often used to incite conflict and war.Final points: I was disappointed with the verdict dished out to Xiang Li. This seemed to me to be another demonstration of fundamental misunderstanding of how software proliferation works. There are a hundred more Xiang Lis out there to replace the one that was arrested. That's not to minimize the extent of his crimes, but it's the fact of the matter. Speaking of his crimes, Xiant Li wasn't even the one doing the actual cracking! Taking out one cyber criminal isn't going to change that, no matter how many warm and fuzzy feelings it may give to federal employees with loose understandings of tech. Giving an harsh sentence of 12 years to one cyber criminal does almost nill to actually combat cyber crime. In my opinion, if the federal employees were smart, they would have worked out a plea bargain with Li to help them catch other cyber criminals (the ones ACTUALLY doing the cracking). The US has, and will continue to be many steps behind the latest hacking and cracking technologies of the day.I give it 2 stars for being interesting subject matter that doesn't often get addressed. To reference another reviewer of the book, technology will not be the end of us. People who don't understand and can't adapt to technology will be.

By g3 from the UP I am so thrilled to have had the chance to read an advance copy of this book.I want you all, and in particular the author, to know that I too am a retired career Assistant US Attorney and thus am particularly well qualified to evaluate this work.I'm sure that the seriousness of the subject matter (piracy of software, and in particular theft of vital, highly sensitive defense related software by crooks in China and then the reselling of same to anyone who wants it for thousands of dollars less than the developer's price) is what got this book published. It is an important topic, and coupled with what I just read in Ted Koppel's new book about the vulnerability of our electrical grids to cyberwarfare, I am led to conclude that the internet will be the end of us at some point in the future. That said, what I LOVED so much about this book is the author's totally accurate, and hilarious, descriptions of what it is like to be an earnest smart clever prosecutor trying to do the best work for the United States within the bureaucracy of the US Department of Justice, and under the reality that federal prosecutors actually work for one of 93 US Attorneys who are political appointees and often have agendas that bear no relationship to what is best for the country (eg. they seek easy stats, which means lots of easy, small, unimportant cases; they frequently have zero experience in criminal law, sometimes have never tried a case anywhere, often know nothing about the federal system). US Attorneys are typically politically ambitious people who treat their stint as a district's top federal prosecutor as a step along the way to future glory in any one of the three branches of federal government. It is often very frustrating for seasoned veteran prosecutors to work for such publicity seeking novices. This book also explains the working relationship between prosecutors and agents very accurately, and provides true glimpses of the bureaucratic hurdles that the agents also have to negotiate to do good work as well. Prosecutors and agents go through so much together, from designing and executing investigations to processing the resulting cases through the court system. The adventures I had and the friendships I formed with the federal agents with whom I worked are some of my most cherished memories of my career in federal law enforcement, and it is clear that this author feels the same way. His touching story of revisiting the beach in Saipan where his father landed as a GI in WWII, and how he commemorated that experience with the agents who shared the experience with him, was very moving. Now that Hall is a published author, here is what I think he should do next . . . craft an American take off on the Rumpole series. He and I both know that we have a gazillion great stories about the amazing things that happen every day in the course of a prosecutor's career (like the time I was overseeing an undercover drug operation and our target failed to show for a scheduled meeting; turns out he had been chosen as a juror for a federal criminal case and there he was, two floors down, sitting on the jury, despite his prior convictions and not knowing we had been recording him for months. what are the odds in a federal district with millions of residents?), and a multitude of tales of characters, defendants, witnesses, colleagues, defense attorneys, agents and cops, and, of course, judges!I implore Hall to pick up his pen again, and start cranking out stories (fiction or non-fiction) based on his career (& if he wants my stories, he should feel free to contact me!). John Mortimer rarely wrote about cases of any national significance, but his stories perfectly captured the frequently amusing nuances of trial work. Hall could be the American John Mortimer. What say you David Locke Hall?

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Amazing book. A non-techie cyber sleuth catches a crook. By Tyler Forge This is a well written and engaging book about catching one particular software pirate. What makes it special is that the story is told from the perspective of an assistant US attorney who is not a computer expert by any stretch of the imagination. This makes the book great for a much wider audience than say Tsutomo Shimomura's book, also partially titled "Takedown," who helped catch Kevin Mitnick. This book's author, David Hall, has to rely on experts like Shimomura to bring cyber criminals to justice. Hall is a remarkable author in that he displays very little ego. He is very frank about his thoughts, mistakes and miscues. I don't want to give spoilers, but Hall had a number of different theories about who did what and how. He investigates and -boom- dead theory. Then comes the part that's frightening. The man is relentless. He simply refines, adapts, and keeps learning about the pirate, the pirate's methods, and the pirate's victims. All of Hall's sleuthing has legal and political backdrops. The legal backdrop involves figuring out what the charges are, how to get the cuffs on a Chinese software pirate, and how to make sure he can prove those charges to his boss, different agencies, and eventually to a jury if required. As for the politics, Hall reveals that running a piracy investigation is full of political obstacles because there is only so much time and money available and the outcome is uncertain. It seems that US attorneys tend to shun risky investigations. Oh - risky doesn't mean getting shot at or anything, it means that there are easier to prove cases that are better for the office's performance metrics.Hall works largely with Homeland Security (HSI) officers. This is new(ish) because the FBI used to be the go-to guys. The book is a nice introduction to who and what HSI is.I could go on forever. I loved this book. I read it in a single long sitting over labor day weekend.

Too long to be away and this time I will be there with 5 different friends who haven't been there before. The walks, with shops and restaurants, is perfect. The maps are also a big plus.

This was hands down the best guide to shopping in Florence. The stores we visited from this book were family owned, sometimes for generations and had unique, quality merchandise. One store owner took me into his workshop to show me how my one of a kind handbag I was purchasing had been produced. When I admired the beauty of a pair of earrings I was buying for my sister-in-law in another store the person helping me was delighted and told me he had crafted them. If you are visiting Florence and plan to do any shopping (and you're crazy if you don't) this is a reference that I recommend without reservation.

I visited several of the stores and peeked in the windows of many places mentioned in this guide. I found the food store reviews especially helpful (EVOO, gelato, etc.) I left this book behind in the boutique hotel's library when I checked out. I wanted other visitors to enjoy it as much as I did.

Bozeman I recently bought a LCD HDTV by mail and set about to install it myself. I made the purchase after careful research, and with some head scratching was able to correctly connect the TV to my new high definition satellite receiver, and was delighted (and relieved) to see a stunningly lovely picture. However, I realized that I had managed just the "easy" part, next I faced the daunting challenge of adding enough black boxes to make a proper home theater. My knowledge of home theater was zip, nada! I did not even own a stereo music system. So, I searched home theater on Amazon and bought this book for no other reason than it said it was the "2007 Edition" and I wanted current information. I knew that an easy solution was to buy a theater-in-a-box, but which brand, and could I get a better value if I could put together a component system specifically designed for what I wanted, or thought I wanted? The book arrived in the mail and I settled down to read. My total lack of knowledge was to test the author's ability to explain a complex technical subject to the complete novice. I cannot say I found the book to be a delight to read, but it did just what I wanted it to do, provide a through grounding in all aspects of home theater, preparing me well to make an informed decision about what to buy to add a good sound system to my new HDTV. This book is not an easy read, but then it should not be if it is to adequately cover the subject matter in detail. I must say that not once did I find myself hopelessly lost as the author attempted to guide me through a maze of technical detail. I found that this one book brought me up to speed, from zero to 60, on home theater. I now go back and use it as a reference. My only mistake was not reading the book before buying the HD TV, as the video sections are excellent and would have saved me much research time.Building your own home theater system requires a considerable outlay of money. Do not start the project without first reading this book. If nothing else, it will arm you to know hype from fact when you face the salesperson.

Excellent and Informative By Frank Doris This book contains a wealth of valuable and useful information and "demystifies" the subject of home theater with clear, concise explanations. It is an excellent resource, exceptionally well-written and extremely comprehensive, and as the book's title indicates, it offers a great deal of practical, real-world advice. The author clearly knows the subject matter thoroughly. I recommend this book highly to both novices and experienced home theater enthusiasts. The 2013 edition contains a lot of useful updated information that will be useful to anyone seeking to purchase or upgrade a home theater system.

Straight to the point, for a variety of skill levels By Adam Sohmer Fleischmann's book is ideal for anyone who wants to cut through the clutter of most books on the subject. Experienced high-end audio and home theater fans will certainly pick up a few new pointers on how to make the best use of their systems, but those who are relatively new to the game will walk away with plenty of information to make informed buying and set-up decisions without having to sift through pages of jargon and hyperbole.

By lazza In general, I have not been impressed with the works of Wilkie Collins outside his "big 4" novels ('The Woman in White', 'No Name', 'Armadale', and 'The Moonstone'). 'Man and Wife' was written right after 'The Moonstone', the last of his really successful novels. Sadly, this novel is unjustly overlooked by Wilkie Collins fans. It's actually a fun read.'Man and Wife' is a complicated story about a young couple, and their friends/family, caught up in the consequences of lax marriage laws during the Victorian era. At that time folks in Scotland were considered married if they simply announced it. No need for marriage licenses, blood tests, etc. Wilkie Collins's gift of building the suspense works well, and the book's ending is unexpected (and terrific).'Man and Wife' is every bit as good as, say, 'The Moonstone'. However for Wilkie Collins neophytes I suggest first trying 'The Woman in White' or 'No Name' (..both are my favorites).PS - I think the previous reviewer is mistaken. This book has nothing to do with intrusive mother-in-laws.

One of Collins' Best By disco75 *Man & Wife* is a wonderful mystery novel, except that instead of the whodunit format, the time frame is reversed and the crime is unfolding as we read. With exciting prose and plotting, Collins produces in the second quarter of the book a pursuit sequence almost as riveting as *Dracula's* 1897 mountain chase. The misdeed is largely psychological and societal: a woman promised but not given marriage becomes pregnant, and she has to be very resourceful in identifying a way to keep her baby legitimate as she hides her condition under the bustles of Victorian dress codes. So far, shades of Hardy's *Two On A Tower,* except this is not a romance. Rather, it is an excoriation of Victorian male-female privilege disparities using bizarre, and actual, Scottish marriage laws of the time.It was written after Collins' blockbuster 1860s novels. As a result, it has the more finely nuanced understanding of human nature that he honed until his very finest novel (*The Evil Genius* comedy). However, it was composed in 1870, and the proximity to his very purple sensation novels like *Armadale* and *Woman In White* leave *Man & Wife* turning in the last quarter to a jep novel that is a sensation style but not as campily over-the-top as the 60s volumes. Fortunately, there is finely-observed satire and comedy to lighten the mood most of the way. It is stronger than that other hidden gem of Collins, *Hide & Seek* and more believable than *The Moonstone.* So cinematic, I'm surprised it hasn't been made into a Gosford Park-style treat.

However, the novel is much more than the story of a helpless Victorian bride at the mercy of her despotic husband. Instead, Man and Wife explores the complex laws surrounding Irish and Scottish marriages in the nineteenth century. Wilkie Collins's interest in the law, especially marriage and divorce, lead to a novel with endless legal loopholes concerning what constitututes a marriage and what doesn't.The lives of two generation of friends named Anne and Blanche are forever changed by the laws concerning man and wife. The first generation Anne and Blanche are childhood friends. Anne Vanborough's Irish marriage is declared null and void by English law. She dies broken hearted and entreats her dearest friend, Anne, to look after he daughter also named Anne. As Anne lay dying she thinks of her daughter and wonders "will she end like me?".After Anne's death, Blanche raises little Anne as her own. Little Anne and Blanche's daughter also named Blanche become best friends. However, history is determined to repeat itself in a much more tragic manner.Another marriage comes under scrutiny. Another woman is forced to become an outcast by the legal system. Anne and Blanche are destined to relive the events that cursed their mothers. I absolutely recommend this novel to all WC fans. Many parts of the novel will move you to tears, others will leave you livid. In my opinion, Man and Wife features the most despicable character I've ever encountered in a Collins novel. An excellent read!

"[...] "You will take your wives, your children, your servants, and your possessions to the village of Ikan, there to stay until I give you leave to return. The palaver is finished." Next came the chief of the Akasava, very ill at ease. "Lord, if any man says I did you wrong, he lies," said the chief. "Then I am a liar!" said Sanders. "For I say that you are an evil man, full of cunning." "If it should be," said the chief, "that you order me to go to my village as you have ordered Sato-Koto, I[...]".

Sanders of the River, by Edgar Wallace

About the Author Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born illegitimately in Greenwich, London, in 1875 to actors Mary Jane Richards and T.H. Edgar. As an infant he was adopted by George Freeman, a porter at Billingsgate fish market. Aged eleven, Wallace sold newspapers at Ludgate Circus and upon leaving school took a job with a printer. He later enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, before transferring to the Medical Staff Corps, and was sent to South Africa. In 1898, he published a collection of poems called 'The Mission that Failed', and subsequently left the army to become correspondent for Reuters. South African war correspondent for 'The Daily Mail' followed and his articles were later published as 'Unofficial Dispatches'. His outspokenness infuriated Lord Kitchener, who removed his credentials. He then edited the 'Rand Daily Mail', but gambled disastrously on the South African Stock Market. Returning to England, Wallace at first reported on crimes and hanging trials, before becoming editor of 'The Evening News'. It was in 1905 that he founded the Tallis Press, publishing 'Smithy', a collection of soldier stories, and 'The Four Just Men'. The latter was published with the ending removed as an advertising stunt and he offered oe500 to readers who could successfully guess the ending. Unfortunately, many did and he was almost bankrupted. At various times Wallace also worked as a journalist on 'The Standard', 'The Star', 'The Week-End Racing Supplement' and 'The Story Journal'. In 1917, he became a Special Constable at Lincoln's Inn and also a special interrogator for the War Office. The Daily Mail sent Wallace to investigate atrocities in the Belgian Congo, a trip that provided material for his 'Sanders of the River' books. In 1923, he became Chairman of the Press Club and in 1931 stood as a Liberal Parliamentary candidate for Blackpool. Wallace's first marriage in 1901 to Ivy Caldecott, daughter of a missionary, ended in divorce in 1918 and he later married his much younger secretary, Violet King. Along with countless articles, some 23 screenplays and many short stories, Wallace wrote more than 170 books, which have been translated into 28 languages and sales of which have exceeded 50 million copies. Over 160 films have been made from his books - more than any other author. In the 1920's one of Wallace's many publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. His sales were exceeded only by 'The Bible'. He died in 1932 whilst working on the screenplay for 'King Kong', having moved to Hollywood after being offered a contract by RKO.

By Colleen McMahon Sanders of the River is the first in a series of books that popular turn-of-the-20th-century author Edgar Wallace wrote, all of which featured Sanders, the commissioner for an undefined area of British colonial Africa (from the descriptions, probably the Gold Coast/Nigeria area). Though described as a novel, the book is really a series of linked short stories.I really don't know how to feel about this book. On one hand, Edgar Wallace is an excellent writer in terms of setting atmosphere and telling a story. Africa in colonial days is a completely foreign place in terms of my prior knowledge, and he makes me really see, hear, feel and at times even smell the setting he writes about. The stories move along quickly and Sanders is something of a stoic nonentity as a hero, but it's always interesting to watch how he acts to resolve various problems that face him. Most of the stories are the same: Sanders, as the British commmissioner, is the highest authority in the land under his control, and holds sway over various native groups living in that area. The plots involve either a foolish white person showing up with little to no understanding of the natives, and getting himself into trouble, or one or the other of the native tribes stirring up trouble. Either way, Sanders has to intervene and resolve the situation. So my mixed feelings come in in that, there is no nice way to put this, the stories and the whole set up are racist to the core. Sanders exemplifies the sort of person Kipling meant when he urged British men to "take up the white man's burden". The natives are continually portrayed as simple, superstitious, easily manipulated, and not very bright. At best they are portrayed as child like and needing a firm hand; at worst they are stupid, greedy, violent brutes. Sanders' role is to watch over and protect the "good" (well behaved, docile) natives and intervene with strong measures when required. He resolves most native "uprisings" and crimes against other tribes or (heaven forfend) one of those foolish white travellers by hanging the ringleader. Lesser offenders are packed off to some coastal location to serve a prison term of hard labor. In Wallace's portrayal, the natives don't seem to really mind or resent Sanders' authority but recognize it as superior; one man, facing hanging by Sanders, even compliments him on the rumor that he is recognized as someone whose hangings are said to be quick and painless. If you are interested in reading popular literature that very much portrays the British imperial attitudes at their highest point, this is a book you will want to look at. It's very readable and at times even funny (Sanders has a very dry wit), but the pernicious attitudes and assumptions underlying the stories gives me pause. It's not something I'd be comfortable giving to or reading to a child too young to understand the historical context. Even with my very mixed feelings and distaste for the racial attitudes on display, I am still interested in reading more of the stories in this series, particularly Bosambo of the River, as Bosambo is a very intriguing native character, sort of a charming trickster type, and I am hoping some of the stories are told from his point of view.

By WOODWARD Leslene If you like adventure in exotic jungles, a dash of comedy and marvellous characters, this is for you. The only qualification is that you must remember--and the publishers also warn you of this--that Edgar Wallace was writing before, across and after, the First World War, and the philosophy and culture of "the British Empire" as it was in those days, is naturally totally different to the world of today. But in addition to the adventure, humour, etc., the Sanders books are a genuine eye-opener to just how difficult a life the white policemen of the African jungles lived. Quickest contact between two points was by carrier pigeon, to get from A to Z you walked through jungle for two weeks, or if you were lucky took a small steamer up a dangerous river. But for a sit-down-feet-up-enjoy-yourself read, they are great.

African adventure from a bygone era By HowdyDave I see a lot of reviews that call this book "racist"...If it had been written within the last 40 years or so I might agree, but it wasn't... this book originally came out in 1911."RACIST"? I don't think so...But there is a good dose of Imperialism, which is merely another mindset from yesteryear. This is a fairly straightforward and honest snapshot of the mindset of bygone days.Looking at it in this fashion, it not only provides entertainment and adventure, it also provides us with a bit of insight into our cultural past.Light reading, fairly short stories, and a lot of fun!
