“We have all seen NASA’s mission control centers at moments of both triumph and tragedy. Johnson makes a significant contribution to spaceflight history by analyzing their pivotal role.”—Roger Launius, associate director for collections and curatorial affairs, National Air and Space Museum   “Addresses a critical yet neglected topic in the history of space exploration, namely the role of mission controllers on the ground, without whom little could have ever been accomplished in space.”—Paul E. Ceruzzi, author of Computing: A Concise History   “Mission control centers are where the action happens in spaceflight. This book looks at three important centers, comparing them to each other and revealing their similarities and differences.”—David Christopher Arnold, author of Spying from Space: Constructing America’s Satellite Command and Control Systems   Brave astronauts, flaring rockets, and majestic launches are only one side of the story of spaceflight. Any mission to space depends on years—if not decades—of work by thousands of dedicated individuals on the ground. These are the people whose voices offer a friendly link to Earth in the void of space, whose hands maneuver rovers across the face of planets, and whose skills guide astronauts home. This book is a long-overdue history of three major centers that have managed important missions since the dawn of the space age. In Mission Control, Michael Johnson explores the famous Johnson Space Center in Houston, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, and the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany—each a strategically designed micro-environment responsible for the operation of spacecraft and the safety of passengers. He explains the motivations behind the location of each center and their intricate design. He shows how the robotic spaceflight missions overseen in Pasadena and Darmstadt set these centers apart from Houston, and compares the tracking networks used for different types of spacecraft. Johnson argues that the type of spacecraft and the missions they controlled—not the nations they represented—defined how the centers developed, yet these centers ended up playing vital national roles as space technology became a battleground for international power struggles in the Cold War years and even after. The most visible part of a conflict that was just as real as the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and Afghanistan and caused great global anxiety, mission control centers have served as symbols of national security in the public eye and pivotal links in the history of modern technology.

I love the US Space program but most have been on the landings, astronauts and the moon rock findings. Now great books are finally coming out about the highly technical aspect of Apollo. This book on Mission Control after Saturn V cleared the tower. Other great works like Rocket Ranch and Countdown to a Moon Launch are the construction of the launch facilities and the actual preparations of getting the Saturn V ready for launch

Very good, detailed history for three Mission Control centers By strix This book gives a detailed history of the development of ground systems at Johnson Space Center, JPL and the European Space Agency (ESA). I especially liked the description of the distinctive qualities at the multinational, multicultural ESA. However the details can be a bit dry. I think the book would have benefited from interviews with the various engineers who work at Mission Control centers around the world.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is a great history of JSC By John This is a great history of JSC, JPL and ESA control centers. But it isn't story. There are an incredible abundance of facts, but very, very little human element.Great reference work, but to be in the top tier of space books it needs the human element.Pictures and graphical layouts of the control centers through the years would have been helpful too.

Rose in Bloom, by Louisa May Alcott

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-Although Louisa May Alcott is best known for classics such as Little Women and Little Men, Rose in Bloom also boasts a lively cast of characters growing up with 19th century social conventions and expectations. A sequel to Eight Cousins, this story finds 20-year-old Rose, the only female cousin, coping with the demands of being an eligible heiress, and her feelings about her widely diverse boy cousins. Blessed with common sense and compassion, Rose and her adopted sister, Phoebe, mature through loss, hard choices, and finally end up with the men that complete them. Barbara Caruso's considerable narration skills are apparent as she conveys exuberance, prim respectability, and sadness. The sound quality is good. Smaller libraries may have to pass on this pleasant addition to their Alcott works in audio format, but public and school libraries that do purchase Rose in Bloom will find it's a refreshing rendition of a lesser known classic.Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library, Rocky Hill, CTCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review This sequel to the classic EIGHT COUSINS appears in paper to provide new readers with the story of Rose's interactions with her eight cousins. Here her return from a trip around the world brings a newfound young lady to her cousins' attention. A fine classic, this holds new life in its paperback form. -- Midwest Book Review

About the Author American novelist Louisa May Alcott is best known for her classic coming-of-age novel Little Women, and its sequels Little Men and Jo s Boys. The daughter of noted transcendentalist and educator Amos Bronson Alcott and Abigail May Alcott, Alcott was an active abolitionist and feminist, and the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. Schooled mainly by her father, Alcott and her three sisters also received lessons from such notables as Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. Alcott penned her first book, Flower Fables, for Emerson s daughter, Ellen. Before gaining critical success for her children s fiction, Alcott wrote several passionate adult novels using the pen name A. M. Barnard, including A Long Fatal Love Chase and Punishment. Alcott s literary career spanned more than 40 years, and she wrote more than 30 books before her death in 1888.

As Good As 'Little Women' By Wendy Kaplan This is the wonderful story of Rose Campbell, whom we first meet as a sickly and despondent 13-year-old orphan. She is grieving for her recently dead parents, and she tends to get the vapors and other Victorian women's ailments. Nevertheless, this shy, frail and delicate creature is sent to live on the "Aunt Hill" to be raised by six very opinionated aunts. And that's not all. She is also surrounded by seven male cousins, as boisterous and full of life as they come. Rose's initial reaction is to wish herself dead. Barely able to lift her head, she is frightened and overwhelmed by the presence of her mischievous clan. But deep inside, she is secretly envious. The boys get to climb trees and run and play, while Rose, as all young women in her day, is confined to the parlor, constricted by tight corsets and impossible petticoats.Along comes Uncle Mac, the doctor uncle whose view of how to raise girls clashes with his day and time--and all six of his sisters, the formidable aunts. In the character of Doctor Mac, Louisa May Alcott was able to tout her own family's avant garde views on women's health, almost a century ahead of its time. The doctor forbids Rose to wear the constricting corsets, to the horror of all her aunts and the girl herself. He wonders how she can feel healthy when she cannot draw a decent breath? He encourages her to play outside with her cousins, to get fresh air and exercise. He demands that she eat good, hearty meals instead of womanly morsels. And under his tutelage, and with the friendship of her wonderful cousins, Rose starts to bloom. She turns from a shy, sickly little mouse into a strong, outgoing young woman.I loved this book as a child; I love it now. It has the perfect message for any girl of any age: Be yourself, take care of yourself, and nothing and nobody can stop you. In my view, "Eight Cousins" is Alcott's true masterpiece.

I like it more than any other Louisa May Alcott book, although its predecessor "Eight Cousins" is a sweet story in its own right. I can't find many romances that don't make me blush, but "Rose in Bloom" not only doesn't embarrass me, it makes me feel quite virtuous. ^_^ "Rose in Bloom" is so delightfully Victorian and unabashedly idealistic and romantic. The characters are all quite loveable and the plot, although firmly rooted in its time, resonates even now. The story is incredibly emotionally involving, I cry whenever I read this book -- even at a bus stop once! However, it's not a sad book; it ends very happily. (The scene with the quill pen just makes me need to call up a friend and squeal about the cuteness of it all.) When I find that mere words on a page can make the world seem to light up with happiness and goodness, I know I have found an incredible book. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes wonderful characters, a charming and earnest narrative, and a cute romance.

38 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Can't believe it was written over 130 years ago! By A Customer The story of Rose and how she comes of age is certainly idealized, but don't we need more ideals these days? She is rich and rather sheltered, but she faces the same peer pressure, the same temptations with boys, the same problems with friends and romance. Even Charlie's struggle with drinking is as fresh and relevant today as it was then. She also promotes an independent, even feminist, attitude, but without losing sight of the importance of feminine talents and virtues. I didn't discover this book until I was in my 20s, even though I had been a Little Women fan since childhood, but since then I've read "Eight Cousins" and other Alcott classics, and I wouldn't be without them. My daughter is learning to read now, and I can't wait to introduce her to Rose!

Briggs One really needs to read the entire series in sequence, beginning with "The Guns of Bull Run" and ending with "The Tree of Appomattox" in order to grasp the increasing intensity of the various battles, as seen through the eyes of the two opposing Kentucky cousins. The "Guns of Shiloh" episode is basically a factual but fictionalized account of one of the most important battles to that time, and takes the reader through General Ulysses S. Grant's campaigns in the Western Theater of the war. Truly an excellent volume!

With the development of a new defense system for Percipience, Alec and Lauren thought that they would finally be able to concentrate on the challenges within their own village. However, an unexpected telepathic connection and a new riddle change all of that, leading them to the discovery of new technologies and the uncovering of an imminent danger threatening them, their village and the human species. As the story unfolds, the characters begin to realize the unthinkable. That Richard may have made a fundamental mistake when laying out his plans two hundred years ago. I can't believe this third installment which happens only10 years from the previous book. There are new players from brand new villages on other sides of the world, that come with more negative mindsets and plays for power that threatens to disrupt the wonderful environment created, and it is up to Alec, Clyde, Robert (and more), and even some who have gone from enemy to ally. There are kids involved that brings new layers and complexity to the story and when all is said and done, in the end the twists will not surprise, but rather shock you. It made me want to read through the entire series again (rewind) and see where I missed the clues. I can tell you they visit mars and there are other travels that are even more intriguing in this one! In the end, it felt more than complete. It was completely riviting. I recieved this book in exchange for my honest opinion and along with what I have said, I will also note that I will be following this author and read everything he has available, as long as he continues to use real world issues to create highly entertaining work, that is intellectually stimulating, such as I found with this series. It is utterly thought-provoking work!

If you ask me how this was effected, I answer, "In the easiest way in the world. She had only to destroy gravitation." For the princess was a philosopher, and knew all the ins and outs of the laws of gravitation as well as the ins and outs of her boot-lace. And being a witch as well, she could abrogate those laws in a moment; or at least so clog their wheels and rust their bearings, that they would not work at all. But we have more to do with what followed than with how it was done.[...]".

The Light Princess, by George MacDonald

Amazon.com Review The fact that George MacDonald--a scholar as well as a preacher and writer--once read this fairy tale to his students instead of giving them a lecture says volumes about the man and his beliefs. It also says much about his faith in the power of stories. The Light Princess is a simple enough tale, clearly written for children--a princess at her christening is cursed by a wicked witch with lightness (she floats blissfully about the castle all day long, and gets into all sorts of adventures, as one can easily imagine)--yet it holds a powerful spiritual truth. Gravity, weight, sorrow, suffering--all of this the princess misses, but with all of these she misses love, for what is love without weight, without body? What is love without falling? She discovers this truth, of course, only at the last minute when a faithful prince loves her enough to die for her.

Sometimes it's not a ponderous lecture--or sermon--that we need in order to experience what incarnation is about. --Doug Thorpe.

From Publishers Weekly McKinley's deft adaptation trims the story without sacrificing the witty vitality of MacDonald's 19th century original. The story of a bewitched princess (gravity does not affect her) and the prince who will sacrifice his life for her is presented in a lavishly illustrated package. Treherne's intensely decorative drawings add a striking visual dimension: her use of rich colors and elegantly stylized figures creates a romantic, mysterious mood. Each picture is bordered by a motif that emphasizes an element of the story, which effectively enhances both text and pictures. All ages. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4The long-awaited princess, a newborn only child, is cursed at her christening by an uninvited disgruntled outrageous guest. The curse: lightness of body and spirit. The princess is given to uncontrollable floating and merri ment. The cure is love, which makes her cry and brings her down to earth. McKinley has cut approximately two thirds of MacDonald's 19th-Century fairy tale, keeping the spirit, grace, and wit of the original. She also keeps the king's inane Chinese philosophers, Hum-Drum and Kopy-Keck, MacDon ald's tasteless but harmless creations whose worst fault is that theirs is the section of the story that children skip over and forgetthey are truly, deeply boring; mercifully, here they are cut to a minimum. Treherne's buoyant, styl ized, full-page, full-color watercolors are reminiscent of Errol LeCain's. In tricate borders pick up a minor pattern in each picture and frame it with stun ning effect. Nothing much has been done with this classic since Maurice Sendak (Farrar, 1969) illustrated it with wonderful tongue-in-cheek formality. This new edition brings a younger gen eration a charming combination of tal ent.Helen Gregory, Grosse Pointe Public Library, Mich.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Witty and sweet, this book was as appealing to me as an adult as it would be to any juvenile consumers with a glimmer of pixie dust in their eyes. Any child who loves C.S. Lewis's classic Chronicles of Narnia will delight in the author who fascinated and influenced Lewis in his own writing. MacDonald never writes to condescend, and thus he entertains all who read. The humor and twists in the story excite and enrapture, while the force of honest spirituality give it a lasting impetus and impact. The Light Princess is truly a nugget from the Golden age of children's literature.

Still, this edition is not quite what I remember.1) This edition does not feature illustrations by Maurice Sendak. Instead, it features a few (about 4) colored etching-type illustrations by Arthur Hughes.2) The cover page says "unabridged". As I do not have the one I read as a child, I cannot say this is false, but I remember it to be a full-size novel. This edition is about the size of a pocket calculator: 3"X4.5". The font size is about a 10. Yet, each chapter is only a few pages long and the total page count is 131.This edition claims to be unabridged from MacDonald's 1867 edition of the story included in a collection of fairy tales. As fairly tale collections are frequently abridged stories, I wonder if this edition is claiming to be unabridged from an edition that itself was shortened.I purchased this copy cheap, knowing there must be a reason for it. Therefore, I was not disappointed. Still, I have now also purchased the edition with Sendak as illustrator. For a pocket book, I find this to be very nice. Still, if you are unfamiliar with the story, I would recommend a different edition.

Very Original, and some Darn Good Writing By Darien Summers The Light Princess has every element that a good fairy tale should have: tragedy, love, good, evil, magic, charm and a happy ending. I'm sure there's more. The book does seem to be a bit more geared towards girls than boys since the premise of the book seems to be more or less that love conquers all, and the book lacks the bravado that boys seem to enjoy. Nonetheless, the book is well written, original in my opinion and well worth the effort to read even if you're an adult. The book is about a princess who has a curse placed on her at birth; a curse that renders her weightless and hence, not prone to the laws of gravity. Another side effect of this curse is her tendency to laugh towards anything, no matter how serious or unfunny the circumstance may be. And so, the curse goes on into adulthood with the princess pleasantly adapting to her circumstances, and her parents not so pleasantly adapting to her circumstances as they do learn to cope, but try everything to break the curse. Along her journeys, the princess meets a prince who falls deeply in love with her. I won't say how, but his love of her, and then, her love of him ends up breaking the princess' curse. The prince also ends up being the remedy to the princess' incessant laughing. The ending is very typical of fairy tales, but the road to it is very uniquely carved out and deserving of praise. I hope you give this book a try.Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

"[...]dared say I would give him a cup of coffee presently. “I am afraid you will have a poor breakfast,” I cried apologetically. “We have been sixty-one days at sea, you know.” A quiet little laugh, with a “That’ll be all right, Captain,” was his answer. All this, words, intonation, the glimpsed attitude of the man in the cuddy, had an unexpected character, a something friendly in it—propitiatory. And my surprise was not diminished thereby. What did this call mean? Was it the sign of some dark design against my commercial innocence? Ah! These commercial interests—spoiling the finest life under the sun. Why must the sea be used for trade—and for war as well? Why kill and traffic on it, pursuing selfish aims of no great importance after all? It would have been so much nicer just to sail about with here and there a port and a bit of land to stretch one’s legs on, buy a few books and get a change of cooking for a while. But, living in a world more or less homicidal and desperately mercantile, it was plainly my duty to make the best of its opportunities. My owners’ letter had left it to me, as I have said before, to do my best for[...]".

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Twixt Conrad and Modernism By Stephen Balbach `'Twixt Land and Sea` (1912) is a collection of three short stories by Joseph Conrad. After a hiatus from sea stories Conrad returned to his roots much to the delight of his fans. Conrad intentionally published these stories in a single volume, they hold together as a whole, greater than the parts, as described below."Secret Sharer" is one of Conrad's best short stories in general, and without a doubt the best of the three. Although the action takes place aboard a ship, for the most part it is a symbolic journey of the discovery of self. A young untested Captain is faced with a number of challenges - morally, and as a skilled sailor - and is able to show to himself and the crew that he is a capable captain. In the end it is ambiguous if the Captain made the right choices - was he morally right or wrong in freeing an escaped murderer? Conrad leaves no solid ground to decided if it was the right choice or not, there are good arguments either way. Was it reckless to put the ship in peril by going to close to shore? Was it morally right to free a man who was essentially innocent, in effect choosing humanity over unbending law? The atmosphere of the story is creepy, almost super-natural, but Conrad remains firmly in the ground of realism, yet also employing symbolism in things such as the hat and scorpion. This combination of realism and symbolism is the very definition of Modernism and Conrad was at the forefront."Freya of the Seven Isles" is written as a melodrama, but Conrad doesn't follow the rules of the genre, he twists the ending; the evil guy gets away without repercussions, and the good guys pay a steep price for doing the right thing. It's an anti-melodrama. A very dark story and not very satisfying. The implication is that life is not a fairy-tale, stuff happens and no matter how hard we work, life can just turn out bad no matter what we do. I wonder if this sort of fatalism was common in the years leading up to World War I."A Smile of Fortune" is essentially the same idea as "Freya" but in reverse, sometimes bad things happen that turn out to be "fortunate". In this story a young man is blackmailed into taking a shipload of potatoes (a seemingly worthless haul), but when he arrives at his destination port, he discovers there is a potato shortage and ends up profiting greatly. The tricked becomes the trickster. In both of these stories the themes of fate and fortune have a long tradition in Medieval literature, making them essentially Romantic works, but with a Modern twist. Like the title suggests, between land and sea, the stories are somewhat of a mixture of styles, hybrid mutts, sort of like Conrad, a Polish expat writing in English.

What can we learn from a high-country valley tucked into an isolated corner of Rocky Mountain National Park? In this pathbreaking book, Thomas Andrews offers a meditation on the environmental and historical pressures that have shaped and reshaped one small stretch of North America, from the last ice age to the advent of the Anthropocene and the latest controversies over climate change.

Large-scale historical approaches continue to make monumental contributions to our understanding of the past, Andrews writes. But they are incapable of revealing everything we need to know about the interconnected workings of nature and human history. Alongside native peoples, miners, homesteaders, tourists, and conservationists, Andrews considers elk, willows, gold, mountain pine beetles, and the Colorado River as vital historical subjects. Integrating evidence from several historical fields with insights from ecology, archaeology, geology, and wildlife biology, this work simultaneously invites scientists to take history seriously and prevails upon historians to give other ways of knowing the past the attention they deserve.

From the emergence and dispossession of the Nuche―"the People"―who for centuries adapted to a stubborn environment, to settlers intent on exploiting the land, to forest-destroying insect invasions and a warming climate that is pushing entire ecosystems to the brink of extinction, Coyote Valley underscores the value of deep drilling into local history for core relationships―to the land, climate, and other species―that complement broader truths. This book brings to the surface the critical lessons that only small and seemingly unimportant places on Earth can teach.

Coyote Valley: Deep History in the High Rockies, by Thomas G. Andrews

Review In this gracefully written, insightful, deeply researched history of an under-studied part of North America, Andrews tells a story of the fracturing of an environmental order. The chronological scope and interdisciplinary breadth of the work are impressive. This is environmental history at its best. (Andrew Isenberg, author of Wyatt Earp: A Vigilante Life)Andrews has followed up his Bancroft Prize–winning Killing for Coal with an exquisitely wrought portrait of an out-of-the-way place that must be central to our understanding of the American West’s past, present, and future: the headwaters of the Colorado River in what today is Rocky Mountain National Park. Coyote Valley is brilliant and beautiful, a must-read for anyone interested in the complex history of the nation’s iconic landscapes. (Ari Kelman, author of A Misplaced Massacre: Struggling over the Memory of Sand Creek)Those interested to learn how historians now write about the ever-changing dynamics among people, nature, and culture need look no further than this book. Coyote Valley defines the cutting edge of environmental history. (Pekka Hämäläinen, author of The Comanche Empire)Andrews covers much ground―eons of time, too―from the prehistoric era to the present to offer a ‘deep history’ of a small patch of ground in the Rockies…Those with environmental concerns and others with interests in Native history will derive much from Andrews’ fine book. (P. D. Travis Choice 2016-04-01)

Welch I wish I had found this book a few years ago when my son was younger. It would have greatly helped established my “Dad Credentials” when he came to me with his imaginative and fun project ideas. I am somewhat handy and can make some basic things, but having Planes, Gliders and Paper Rockets around as a ready reference guide sure would have helped. That said, if you have kids who want to start “making”, this is a great, fun place to start.Planes, Gliders and Paper Rockets provides several projects from paper helicopters (with optional, but cool, LED lights), Rubber band airplanes, kites, foam air rockets and more. According to the book’s preface, this is the first in a series of books from Maker Media and sets a good example for the other books in the series. I’ll certainly be on the lookout for more like this. Each project provides some basic discussion starters about the scientific concepts involved in each project and then moves into a careful and well illustrated step-by-step guide for building and then flying the project. All the photos are clear and well-captioned. Templates are included when useful and a complete supplies list are provided for each project. Some projects can also be purchased from Make as complete kits, ready to be assembled.Planes, Gliders and Paper Rockets would be a great book for kids and adults to work through together, over the course of several weeks or months -- growing in skills with each project. Older kids could put together many of these projects on their own, if they were looking for a place to start their own maker adventures.Of course, a book like this is could also be used in any educational environment to discuss a wide variety of engineering, aeronautical and scientific concepts. Hands-on activities are a great way of clarifying and solidifying new concepts by applying theories as soon as possible after they are learned. If you’re looking to get away from your computer for a while and enjoy some time making things with your hands instead of just your mind, Planes, Gliders and Paper Rockets is a great place to start.

I spent many happy childhood hours making paper airplanes, paper helicopters and paper waterbombs (NOT covered in the book!). I've since used some of these skills and designs with children and grandchildren. So I know that they work and can provide some much-needed fun. The projects in this book mostly are a bit more sophisticated than I was able to create on my own as a kid in elementary school. So I recommend that you don't just hand this book to a kid and say "Go have fun!" Make it a parent-child or grandparent-grandchild activity to duplicate some of the projects in this book and, if necessary, make modifications to suit what materials you have on hand. (My thanks to O'Reilly Media for providing a review copy.)

Lepard This is the best book on achieving personal excellence that has ever been written. EVER. It is destined to become a classic. The book and Commander Divine's program have changed my life in an astounding way. I read some of the other reviews here and I am wondering is they read the same book. Thin on content? Are you kidding me? After college (30 years ago) I read M. Scott Peck's The Road Less Traveled and it changed my life. I felt like is was a gift to humanity. I have not had that experience with a personal growth book until reading UM. For me reading this book is like reading the Bible. Just one basic and irrefutable truth after another. I predict that over time this book will change our world in a meaningful way. The general thesis is that we are so much more than we realize and that elite performance, or 20 times what we think we can perform, is available to all of us. Divine has all the pieces here. Physical strength and discipline. Control of the monkey mind. Meditation. Tapping into the subconcious through visualization. Spiritual growth. Alignment with the universe and our higher purpose. This guy is a warrior, philosopher, monk, not just an ex Navy Seal. He has street cred because he did it. He graduated number one (honor man) in his Navy Seal class. Do any of you know how hard that is to do? He did it by using the techniques that he freely shares in this book. He is very honest and open. His life has not always been a bowl of cherries, but he has listened to his inner voice and he is very gifted at teaching what he has learned. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The book has changed my life in a hugely positive way. It may or may not work for you, but it worked for me.

Definitive Handbook for Forging and Sustaining Mental Toughness By Bill K Can not say enough about all I have learned from the earlier versions of this book and this newest edition has raised the bar again. By Robert Really good book, combines a lot from eastern philosophies, NLP and Tony Robbins, performance psychology, etc. Not necessarily all new concepts, but a new way to tie them together. Plus it's fun to have them colored by the experience of a decorated Navy SEAL who's clearly practicing what he teaches. I'm glad I read it and think it will help me perform well in intense and high stakes situations.

On September 9, 2015, the Butte Fire broke out on a wooded hillside near the Jackson Butte, California. That evening it seemed to be under control. But the next day, with changing winds, temperatures upwards of 105 degrees, and after this 5 year drought, the fire whipped out of control. Then with no warning, the local police came with sirens blaring telling them they had to get out now! Facing a wall of fire, they drove out and escaped with only a few of the ranch animals and their lives. they had to leave most of them behind in the flames. With in a few h ours that evening, the fire consumed 71,000 acres, over 500 homes, and several of their neighbors. suddenly more than 1000 people were homeless in this once beautiful rural area of Calaveras County. Living in exile with only a few of her pets, not knowing the fate of her ranch and the othe animals trapped there alone in the middle of this huge fire for 8 days is a grueling story. A story every one living in the wilderness should read.
