Little known history of white slavery in North Africa By Hill Country Bob Wonderful little known history of slavery over the years, with focus on the Christian slaves of the Barbary States of North Africa. I recommend this book for anyone interested in slavery over the years in the world.Senator Charles Sumner was anti slavery, and was the man who was caned until he was unconscience on the floor of the Senate by Representative Brooks of South Carolina the day after he gave an anti slavery speech. This is a very interesting little book where he focused on the white slaves in the North African Barbary states including Morocco, Algiers, Salee, Oran, Tunis, Tripoli and Bacra. He starts out with some history pointing out that slavery had gone on for millennia. People captured in a war were frequently enslaved. Men to do hard work, including rowing gallery ships and the women frequently made concubines. He then addresses the rise of the Islamic religion in North Africa in particular. When Islam expanded via the sword in its early days, it over ran essentially all of Spain. Spain fought for many years to drive the Moors out, and become free of the second class citizenship under Islam. After 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabela re-conquered the last of Spain from the Moors, whom we would now call Muslims, there was an increase in piracy. Ferdinand and Isabela evicted many of the Moors, who moved to North Africa in many cases and became pirates who preyed on Christian ships. The pirates enslaved the crews, in many cases for ransom by their country or family. (He mentions only as a minor note the fact that the Moors were also importing negro slaves from south of the Sahara in much larger numbers than the captured white Christian slaves.) He does an excellent job of tying together slavery over the years. The preying on Christian ships by the Barbary Pirates was a money rising operation against the religious enemies of Islam. At different times the Barbary Pirates preyed on English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, etc. ships, as well as raiding the Christian shores in the Med, and the Atlantic, up as far as Ireland and the English Channel. He also point outs that it continued until the early 1800s, when the US in 1815 sent a squadron over to defeat the pirates get the American captives. However, the real end came in 1816 when the British and Dutch showed up with 5 line of battle ships, 10 frigates, 4 bomb vessels and 5 other small ships, and fired 50,000 shot at Algiers, the largest fortress, and essentially leveled the place. This led to the Barbary Pirates giving up their last of thousands of white Christian slaves and stopping their piracy. He makes the points that negro slavery was ongoing in the world, in particular in the American South and the Barbary Coast at this time, but that it was not addressed when the white Christian slaves were freed. This is a very illuminating book in how Senator Sumner tied together slavery over the ages. The book is extensively foot noted, and reference are provided.

The author went to great lengths in providing crucial and historical evidence of events of Christian white slavery during a time in Europe's and America's history!Charles Sumner provided the list of countries involved in these horrendous acts and was not afraid to list the guilty parties by name.I enjoyed the stories about acts of heroism (Lord Exmouth, Admiral Van de Capellan and John Fox - to only name a few) of the great men involved in trying to liberate the tens of thousands of slaves. Mr. Sumner wrote in some detail how the slaves tried to free themselves. The book is highly informative for any historian and anyone trying to find out about slavery of men or women of any color, religion, or country. On the pages, the ink is somewhat faded (please bear in mind the book was published 1847) in some places or I would have given it a five star but you can still make out a great deal of what was written. A great read!(Where are the movies on this book?)

Very informative By Canajun As a descendant of Irish immigrants, I am horrified to learn how my ancestors were treated and am amazed at the stalwart composure of these same people. I understand so much of how I am from how my bloodline has adapted and prospered in spite of this terrible journey that those of my past have had to endure.

By Beach-Man This is a fantastic book, written with relevant examples, and testimonies by other freelancers who have already accomplished varying degrees of success in the freelance WordPress Web Designer world. I have a pretty extensive business background thru formal education and through 15+ years of IT/management consulting for various sized companies. Coming from my background, there was nothing earth shattering revealed in the book, but I found the precise relevance of the examples to be an eye opener. I'm not ashamed to say that I took copious notes and plan to implement many of the concepts and techniques in my own business. If I were to list one thing that I think might limit the wider acceptance of the book, I think it would be that much of the tone seemed to be written from a WordPress "Developer" (someone who writes code, and fully customizes WP, including developing plugins and themes) perspective. I bring this up only in an effort to come up with something that "could" have been done differently. In fact, there are a lot of us out here who are not plugin developers, but who are building web development or website support businesses and who do not, and may never learn to write code at that level. That being said, I found the writing style to be exceptional, and the book hard to put down. The staff at iThemes (I am also a customer of their utilities and tools which I use to manage the WP websites I develop and manage) did an great job in taking the majority of the jargon out of the text so that the book reads like, well..., a primer on how to run a solid web development business, rather than a sales pitch for their products. I admire and respect that... Well done.

"[...]wall of indifferentism, and contemptuous of all that was not tangible and material. At times the rector and the curate confessed to each other that these people seemed more utterly lost than any others with whom the work of the Church brought them in contact. Mr. Byars was a widower with one son, now at Oxford, and one daughter, Helena, who was engaged to Basil Gortre, the curate. About six o'clock the vicar sat in his study with a pile of letters before him. The room was a comfortable, bookish place, panelled in pitch pine where the walls were not covered with shelves of theological and philosophical works. The arm-chairs were not new, but they invited repose; the large engraving over the pipe-littered mantel was a fine autotype of Giacomo's St. Emilia. The room was brightly lit with electric light.[...]".

By James Hobbs Around 1900 Bower started to write about the wild west - and she was one of a few women writers that 'wrote like a man' and fooled most of her readers at the time. But she knew what she was writing about, and grew up in the west, listened to all the tales, and wrote with a passion about the life, the men, the women, and the harsh conditions of the time. Not afraid to write about the violent times she is one of the best western writers ever, that this book is one of her finest of her character creations.

Orthodoxy, by Gilbert Keith Chesterton

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton, KC*SG (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) better known as G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox." Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out." Chesterton is well known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and for his reasoned apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both Progressivism and Conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius." Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin.

My friends and roommates hated me when I read it because I would continuously stop and read passages out loud to them. There was never a dull moment in the entire thing.I think the reason that this writing is so powerful is that he makes it so personal, without moving away from logical or reasonable arguments. He sets up the extended metaphor of an explorer that sets out to find new lands, but ends up "discovering" England, where people have been for thousands of years. He is the explorer, telling the tale of his personal search for truth, and Orthodox Christianity is the new land, having already been established thousands of years in the past.I went to pull a quote from the book for a talk that I was working on, got sidetracked, and found myself two hours later having reread a huge portion of it over again. Please read this. If you don't like it I will let you punch me in the face as hard as you want.

His arguments are down-to-Earth with a universal appeal - there's no high-brow, mind-bending gymnastics here. He's as straight-forward about explaining his thinking and reasoning as is that marvelous character he created in his Father Brown fictional murder mystery stories. There was at least one point of religious thought I don't agree with Chesterton about, but he makes me think - about things and in ways I didn't think on my own. And a couple of things that gave me pause, I had to change my mind about by the time I was finished with the book.Oh - there's this other thing. Even if you don't care about Christian apologetics, read this for the language. It is beautiful. It is tasty. It is so satisfying! This book is an intellectual delight, but written for the ordinary person on the street. It is not like a spiritually edifying book read for inspiration. You might think about things not thought of before. You certainly will marvel at how his brain worked and his language use. Enjoy!

This is another one that I have had to take slowly. The genius of G.K. Chesterton is well noted, but this the first of his writing that I have ever had the chance to read. This is widely considered to be one of his two greatest works, and I can see why. The book is a defense of the doctrine of the church, commonly referred to as The Apostles' Creed. Written to overcome agnostic, humanist, and scientific arguments against the doctrine. Using paradoxes, comparisons, history, and facts, Chesterton defends the point that the Creed is not dull, dark and restrictive, but is in fact interesting, bright and liberating. His intellect is so far ahead of an average guy like me, that I had to read this slowly, and will need to read it again. If you're not a regular reader, you may not want to start with this one.

He starts out bad. Truly not a good young man... he has opportunities and when given them, either pawns the ring (not his) and then lies, attempts to steal from his roommate, etc. Sam has some rough times, all of which he earns by virtue of having none! What I liked is how when finally he reaches the decision to have a fresh start he truly does turn over a new leaf. He meets new friends, gains employment and most important of all, the opportunity to have an education. Finally he decides to learn and by golly, he does so.The ending is satisfactory and I'm glad I read Sam's Chance. It shows that you can "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" provided you study hard and are industrious, don't smoke, gamble, or drink. Sam initially made bad choices but he did change. It's a good story.

Story of Two Different Paths By A Customer Alger writes another fairly predictable rags to riches story about a fifteen-year-old orphan who lives on the streets of New York. Sam, the protagonist, is a wily young man who takes life as it comes. He never saves and spends all of his earnings before payday.Sam starts the story in the employ of a successful businessman. Sam receives $5 a week, but cannot make ends meet. His roommate, who studies at night and saves money, is more than capable of saving money. In this story, Sam learns that gambling does not pay, that idleness and lack of responsibility at the work place can get one into trouble, and the value of saving money. Alger provides for Sam's about face recovery upon meeting a young woman on the way to Boston -- where Sam plans to relocate for bigger and better things.Alger shows the wrongs and the rights for young man growing up. He advocates avoiding billiards, gambling, and tobacco. He also encourages his readers to study. Sam's roommate, who's behavior and habits are the opposite of Sam's, succeeds, while Sam continues to struggle. This was a fun book to read and light-hearted.

“If 70 percent of all cattle or 30 percent of all chickens were to die annually, states of emergency would be declared everywhere. The death of bees is at least that dramatic and with even more far-reaching consequences.” More Than Honey, the book based on the award-winning documentary of the same name, takes us on a global tour of the world of bees, introducing us along the way to “killer bees,” Frankenbees, beekeepers, and human pollinators. Markus Imhoof and Claus-Peter Lieckfeld examine both the history and current status of our relationship to and reliance on bees, and expose the human behaviors that are contributing to the decline of the bee population—a decline that could ultimately contribute directly to a world food problem. The authors intersperse information about the intricate social structure of the bee world and the problems faced by bees—ranging from the ubiquitous Varroa destructor to overuse of pesticides and an ever-shrinking natural landscape—with conversations and interviews with beekeepers and bee experts from across the world, balancing the views of those who see bees as simply a valuable source of income with the views of those who see bees as undervalued, misunderstood creatures that need our help to survive. The end result is a fascinating, accessible overview of a species that is crucial to our survival.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A short, lively read with an amazing amount of information. Maybe the book will create a buzz--honey bees are in great danger. By lyndonbrecht I found this book by accident, looked at it and proceeded to read it in one sitting (two hours or so). The book relates to a 2012 documentary film by Imhoof, so I'm assuming he did not write the basic text. The last chapter is by Imhoof and describes how he made the film. This is an excellent chapter and might well form a text in and of itself in the peculiarities of making a nature documentary. The book itself is not long, but it's full of information and I think it would be a good place to start for anyone not knowing much about honeybees. The writing overall is extremely good, written in a participatory journalistic style. The book is translated from the original German, so the translator deserves credit as well.Start with economics, bees pollinate such staples as apples, peaches, cherries, cucumbers and almonds. Almonds are explored at some length since if bees die out the crop does too (pollination by hand would be enormously expensive). That's the crux of the book, that bees are worth many billions of dollars to agriculture, and bees are in fact in trouble. The trouble is parasites, and diseases such as brood disorder, but also something rather new, CCD, colony collapse disorder. Some researchers claim that CCD is caused by certain pesticides, hotly contested by corporations such as Bayer, maker of a disputed pesticide.Individual chapters could be read separately if a reader chooses. Chapter 2 discusses "Bees in an ideal world," essentially how bees function, and this is admirably written, complex behaviors made highly readable. Chapter 3 discusses bees in the lab, that is studied by scientists, and some remarkable information is in this chapter,. Bees dance to communicate, as is well known, but the dance is performed in total darkness, so how is the information conveyed, by sound and smell? Beeswax turns out to be an amazingly complex material comprised of 200 different compounds of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, acids and esters (the writer comments these are only three kinds of the many complexities).Chapter 4 describes "customized" bees, that is bee breeding. Chapter 5 discusses "humans as bees", including humans hand-pollinating plants, but also making fake honey. It also notes that beekeeping in urban areas is new and that such bees don't have to deal with the serious pesticide threat common in fields and rural agriculture. Chapter 6 looks at untamed bees, mostly the story of the Africanized bee. This story gets more complex than I have read elsewhere. Africanized bees produce far more honey per hive than the European honeybee, and are resistant to some pests, and have turned Brazil into a major honey producer--at the cost of increasing yearly bee-caused deaths from 25 to 195 (the information is not sourced and no detail is given about it). Chapter 7 looks at bees of the future, the weakest chapter. Bees possibly may be genetically modified, or other bees may be used. Bumblebees are now used in greenhouses for tomatoes, which are "buzz pollinated," the vibrations from the bees' wings loosens pollen.Chapter 8 is Imhoof describing at length the making of his film.

Great history and literature By Pettigrew I read Altsheler's series on the Civil War in elementary school 40 years ago and I recently rediscovered them at a used bookstore in Chapel Hill. It was the influence of these books that sparked a life long interest in this chapter of American history. I went from Altsheler to Douglas Southall Freeman in one year and haven't quit since, as my library attests. Parents looking for good reading material for children should consider Altsheler. The Civil War series follows the war through two cousins fighting on each side. The books were written near the turn of the last century, I read them in the 60s, so I am interested to now go back and read them with respect to how Altsheler dealt with the moral issues of the war.

Offering pragmatic guidance for planning and conducting a meta-analytic review, this book is written in an engaging, nontechnical style that makes it ideal for graduate course use or self-study. The author shows how to identify questions that can be answered using meta-analysis, retrieve both published and unpublished studies, create a coding manual, use traditional and unique effect size indices, and write a meta-analytic review. An ongoing example illustrates meta-analytic techniques. In addition to the fundamentals, the book discusses more advanced topics, such as artifact correction, random- and mixed-effects models, structural equation representations, and multivariate procedures. User-friendly features include annotated equations; discussions of alternative approaches; and "Practical Matters" sections that give advice on topics not often discussed in other books, such as linking meta-analytic results with theory and the utility of meta-analysis software programs.

Applied Meta-Analysis for Social Science Research (Methodology in the Social Sciences), by Noel A. Card PhD

Review

"Card is to be applauded for his thorough discussion of both the fundamentals and recent advances in meta-analysis, and for his use of such friendly, toned-down language. For instance, the graphical presentation of simulation results in order to explain the threat/impact of publication bias will really help readers understand the concept. I really like the author’s discussions of practical matters, which may stimulate readers to investigate new approaches and practices. I will recommend this book to my colleagues in psychology and education who are interested in learning meta-analysis."--Soyeon Ahn, PhD, Research, Measurement, and Evaluation Program, University of Miami

"This book teaches individuals how to do a meta-analysis from start to finish. Readers learn how to search the literature, code studies, statistically combine study results, and write up the results. Card covers topics not included in most textbooks, such as how to retrieve unpublished studies, the creation of a coding manual, effect sizes from multiple regression analysis, publication bias, and multivariate procedures in meta-analysis. I like the 'Practical Matters' sections in the chapters. This is an excellent textbook for a course on meta-analysis, and an excellent manual for anyone wanting to conduct a meta-analysis."--Brad J. Bushman, PhD, Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan

"The book is well organized and walks the reader through the concepts in an accessible, logical manner. The definitions and explanations are clear and easy to follow, and the consistent use of examples throughout the chapters is very helpful. The author does a nice job of presenting key considerations, alternative approaches, and the strengths and shortcomings of each option. The reading level and writing style are appropriate for graduate student readers."--Jody A. Worley, PhD, Department of Human Relations, University of Oklahoma-Tulsa

"Card's book is written in a nontechnical style that would work well in a graduate course, or it could be used by someone who is just learning meta-analysis. Card takes the reader through the multiple steps in creating a meta-analytic study, such as retrieving studies, creating a coding manual, and using effect size indices, as well as how to write a meta-analytic review paper. His book is peppered with examples of the technique, which makes the topic more accessible and easier to understand. He also provides advice on the utility of meta-analysis software, such as how it can be used and whether it is needed. This book is written like a good recipe that the reader can follow from beginning to end to produce a meta-analytic study ready to submit for publication....Describes how to do meta-analysis without bogging down the reader with equations. Card offers simple explanations of what to do in meta-analysis and provides enough background so that the reader can understand the rationale behind procedures and why the procedures need to be completed." 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A great practical guide for a stats light researcher By Becky I find that most books on the topic are either too heavy in stats and opaque equations or, on the contrary -- too superficial and merely give an overview sufficient to make you a more intelligent consumer of such research, but not train you to be a researcher yourself. This book is a great exception. I really enjoyed this clearly written book because it provides a very practical explanations of what to do, how to do it and why. The math is kept to the bare minimum and each equation is well explained. It is well organized and easy to follow.I am, however, a bit disappointed that the author chose to skip some issues regarding them as "too difficult for you, the reader" and did not like the use of the sometimes didactic tone (feels like the author was saying: this is really really complicated and you are not so bright, so I will skip this topic altogether. You'll understand when you are older").

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Decent book By Laureen Turner Easily understandable and truly describes the many aspects of a meta analysis. It is detailed enough but with excellent examples.

By Skyler Hudson Well written book which was bought as a reference after attending his lecture. He is a good speaker and makes things so easy to understand. The book is a good resource for details and references, if you are planning to conduct a meta-analytic review.

Working remotely and running a remote team seem like black magic to many. Yet at Zapier, we've been working remotely since our founding in October of 2011. This book shares everything we've learned about running a remote team—our successes and our failures. Beginning as a series of posts on the Zapier blog, this book is an ongoing work about our experiences as a remote team, with much of the book written by Zapier CEO Wade Foster along with chapters from our team members and other remote employees. Great starter book for the budding Backyard Farmer By Louisiana Reader Backyard Farming: Fruit Trees, Berries and Nuts, is Kim Pezza's latest book in her Backyard Farming series. it is a great overview book to introduce potential backyard grower to growing Fruit trees, berries and nuts. The book combines some scientific details with practical guidance on how to plant and care for your plants. Kim Pezza also includes information on the most common diseases and problems for the respective plant/tree. The book is divided into 8 chapters. The chapters focus on the history of cultivating fruit trees, the basics, propagation, container growing (not everything takes a lot of space), growing: fruits, berries, nuts, and tropical varieties, and finally harvesting and preserving.Rather than just stay at the higher discussion level, Ms Pezza provides useful information on specific types of fruits, nuts and berries. She hits all the main varieties. She explains when to plant, prune, how to care for and finally how to harvest. The book is a great overview book. If you're looking to become a backyard gardener, Backyard Farming: Home Harvesting: Canning and Curing, Pickling and Preserving Vegetables, Fruits and Meats is a great book to start with. Now for the legal language: I won this book as part of the goodreads.com reader giveaway. that said, I'll probably buy more of her Backyard Farming series.

"[...]and the lid itself, the recently rebellious lid—such is the influence of a bright example—performed a sort of jig, and clattered like a deaf and dumb young cymbal that had never known the use of its twin brother. That this song of the kettle’s was a song of invitation and welcome to somebody out of doors: to somebody at that moment coming on, towards the snug small home and the crisp fire: there is no doubt whatever. Mrs. Peerybingle knew it, perfectly, as she sat musing before the hearth. It’s a dark night, sang the kettle, and the rotten leaves are lying by the way; and, above, all is mist and darkness, and, below, all is mire and clay; and there’s only one relief in all the sad and murky air; and I don’t know that it is one, for it’s nothing but a glare; of deep and angry crimson, where the sun and wind together; set a brand upon the clouds for being guilty of such weather; and the widest open country is a long dull streak of black; and there’s hoar-frost on the finger-post, and thaw upon the track; and the ice it isn’t water, and the water isn’t free; and you couldn’t say that anything is what it ought to be; but he’s coming, coming, coming!— And here, if you like, the Cricket DID chime in! with a Chirrup, Chirrup,[...]".

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A lost classic By Stephen Balbach Dickens wrote 5 novella length Christmas Books, the most well known is the first `A Christmas Carol`. The third book, `The Cricket on the Hearth`, during the 19th century was as equally loved and popular as `A Christmas Carol`. Today it has largely been forgotten. What happened? The plot centers on a blind girl who is sadly heart broken when her plans for marriage are thwarted - this would have been a familiar and even desirable outcome for Victorian readers who believed disabilities were inherited and thus the disabled should be kept from marrying for the sake of any unfortunate offspring. Today this is obviously no longer correct and even seems heartlessly inexplicable to the modern reader - as a result the book has become something of a forgotten period piece. However it is still an excellent story and well worth reading for other reasons: the Dickens characters, the scenes, the feel good ending.Unlike most of Dickens novels, there have been only a few adaptions to screen and stage. The NBC radio play from 1945 is horrendously bad, the plot is mangled beyond recognition and at only 25 mins hardly captures anything of the original. There are two silent film versions, but as far as I can tell there are no modern film adaptations other than a 50-min 1967 cartoon version which has poor reviews and doesn't appear the follow the plot closely. There was a stage adaption called `Dot` (1857) that was very popular throughout the rest of the 19th century but it is also now obscure.`The Cricket` deserves more attention despite its failings, the theme of adultery is well done and surprisingly frank, I was really moved by Mr. Peerybingle's grief and his night in front of the fire with the pixies. The scenes in the toy shop are classic Dickens and the final party scene is emotionally uplifting. Until a serious video version is made, which corrects the handicap aspect, it will unfortunately languish in obscurity, read mostly by Dickens fans. The Kindle edition is fine, I recommend checking out the Wikipedia page which links to a picture gallery and first edition scans to see it in its original presentation of fonts and drawings.

The writing can be difficult to understand at times, but that was the language of the day. People had a misunderstanding and doubt with others that we still have today. I enjoyed the positive, cheerful ending.

The Material Life of Roman Slaves is a major contribution to scholarly debates on the archaeology of Roman slavery. Rather than regarding slaves as irretrievable in archaeological remains, the book takes the archaeological record as a key form of evidence for reconstructing slaves' lives and experiences. Interweaving literature, law, and material evidence, the book searches for ways to see slaves in the various contexts - to make them visible where evidence tells us they were in fact present. Part of this project involves understanding how slaves seem irretrievable in the archaeological record and how they are often actively, if unwittingly, left out of guidebooks and scholarly literature. Individual chapters explore the dichotomy between visibility and invisibility and between appearance and disappearance in four physical and social locations - urban houses, city streets and neighborhoods, workshops, and villas.

The Material Life of Roman Slaves, by Sandra R. Joshel, Lauren Hackworth Petersen

Review "The object of this fascinating book is to render visible Roman slaves in the remains of the Campanian cities and villas destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mt Vesuvius ... The possibilities raised are of great importance, and in its legitimate concern to evoke the day-to-day realities of life in slavery, [this] book is to be warmly applauded ... The challenge of recovering a history of slavery from archaeological evidence has been laid down, and it is in this that the book's special value lies." Classical World"The Material Life of Roman Slaves complements and enriches a growing body of scholarship on the physical conditions and material remains of Roman slavery, but it also represents a logical continuation of the research agenda of both authors. Their collaboration on the present book represents a model of scholarly teamwork that bridges disciplinary divides and reconciles discrete classes of evidence. The result is not simply a new study of Roman slaves in their ancient physical setting but a compelling proposal for reading strategies that overcome historical silence. The attempt to address the deficiencies of the available evidence pushes the main argument into controversial territory, but even so this book will undoubtedly become an obligatory point of reference for any future work on Roman slaves and other historically mute populations." American Journal of Archaeology

Recovering the World of Ancient Slaves By Timothy B Smith The Material Life of Roman Slaves seeks to bring to the foreground the space in which Roman slaves lived and worked in order to better understand them. It offers useful insights and builds upon recent work by others to analyze the space and time of the ancient Roman context. I found it very much worth reading and reflecting upon. The authors also take on a crusading tone when it comes to decrying the neglect of scholars of the presence of slaves in the lives of the elite. They show how a careful reading of ancient sources and archaeological remains may uncover the experiences of Roman slaves.
