Nasmyth's Autobiography - Excellent Read, Poor Edition By Ryan Battelle Nasmyth was a titan of 19th century British engineering, and his autobiography is outstanding. Any study of the great engineers of history would be remiss without this book. However, this particular edition is not the one to buy. Although the text is complete (as far as I can tell), this book is missing all the drawings and figures present in the original text. If you're considering this book, don't buy this edition. Find yourself a copy of the original, complete work.

From the Back Cover

From the publication of Ragged Dick in 1867 through to the 1930s, Horatio Alger’s tales of young boys overcoming adversity were part of the mainstream of American culture. The phrase “a Horatio Alger story” remains synonymous with the American ideal of struggling against adversity and finally achieving success, financial and otherwise―but especially financial.

As Michael Moore says in Dude, Where’s My Country?, “Alger was one of the most popular American writers of the late 1800s. … Alger’s stories featured characters from impoverished backgrounds who, through pluck and determination and hard work, were able to make huge successes of themselves in this land of boundless opportunity. The message was that ‘anyone can make it in America, and make it big.’” Ironically, however, it is typically chance and good luck that is most instrumental in bringing success to the typical Horatio Alger hero, hardworking and deserving though he may be. And often the ideal of egalitarianism features just as prominently as that of rugged individualism.

In all these respects, The Erie Train Boy (1890) is typical of the genre. For a number of reasons, however, it is among the most interesting of Alger’s many novels. Fred Fenton is the Erie train boy, a young lad selling sundries on the trains traveling north from New York and through this work supporting his mother and siblings as the family struggles to survive in a New York tenement house. The story eventually unfolds in a more or less mechanical fashion, but along the way we are shown a world of confidence men and pickpockets, of cheap boarding houses and railway hotels, and of a good deal of the grit of life in late nineteenth-century America. We are given sensation―from Fenton rescuing a young woman whose dress has caught fire from the footlights in the midst of a performance, to a saga of stolen bonds secreted near a Quebec village, to an episode of thievery at Niagara Falls, and finally to a scheming uncle and a parcel of land in Colorado. We are given as well a great deal of detail about the social and economic life of the times; Alger pays attention to wages and prices perhaps more than any other writer of the period. All in all, The Erie Train Boy is among the most far-reaching and most interesting of Horatio Alger novels.

The different editions of Alger’s novels reflected as much as they shaped American culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Later editions of the novels were often shortened. This made them more of a “quick read,” but in many cases the material selected for excision was ideologically charged; descriptions explicitly or implicitly critical of the privileged classes were disproportionately likely to be cut. In this respect, too, The Erie Train Boy is an interesting example of the genre; later editions cut a considerable amount of material from the original.

In addition to providing the text itself, this Broadview reissue endeavors to make something of its cultural history available for readers. The copy text is that of the early edition published by M.A. Donahue & Company, collated against the A.L Burt Company edition from the 1890s; both of these include the complete Alger text. The text has also been collated, however, against the edition published by the Whitman Publishing Co. circa 1920―an edition that was considerably abridged, though no acknowledgment of this was made in the volume itself―and an appendix provides full information on the changes made for this later edition. Readers will thus be able to trace the ways in which the text was altered through abridgement. Also included as an appendix to the volume are cover illustrations and advertisements from all three editions.

He was born in 1832 and died in 1899. Over 250 million copies of his books were published. Horatio lived in poor parts of New York City and thus was able to write in detail about how the poor lived. His Rags-To-Riches stories excited the imaginations of the youth of the day. It is sad to see that books written for teenagers over a hundred years ago are now stored in the adult section of the library. The vocabulary is much richer than youth books being published today. When looking for Alger stories always try to get an unabridged version. But be warned, some of the Horatio Alger stories are not as good as this one. For example "A Rolling Stone" is very racist. The hero in the "The Erie Train Boy" is Fred Fenton, a hard working 17 year old boy. We first meet him on a train where he sells travelers food, magazines, and books. He is struggling to provide for his widowed mother and his younger brother. Early in the story they almost get kicked out of their apartment because they don't have enough money to pay the rent. It is such a contrast to see how times have changed. For example their rent back then was $10 a month, and they had very few possessions.Fred has a number of adventures in New York City. He also does some traveling, first going over to Niagara Falls, and then later up into Canada. At Niagara Falls Fred is suspected of being a thief, but is able to prove his innocence and help find the real crock. Later in the story he ends up working for a wealthy man and is entrusted with a mission to go into Canada to recover some stolen bonds. This is a fun book. It is very well written. My children kept asking me to read the book. If you want an entertaining story about life in America over a hundred years ago, this is a great book to buy.

In the story of every great company and career, there is one defining moment when luck and skill collide. This book is about making that moment happen.According to Frans Johansson’s research, successful people and organizations show a common theme. A lucky moment occurs and they take advantage of it to change their fate. Consider how Diane von Furstenberg saw Julie Nixon Eisenhower on TV wearing a matching skirt and top, and created the timeless, elegant wrap-dress.That was a “click moment” of unexpected opportunity. Johansson uses stories from throughout history to illustrate the specific actions we can take to create more click moments, place lots of high-potential bets, open ourselves up to chance encounters, and harness the complex forces of success that follow.

The Click Moment: Seizing Opportunity in an Unpredictable World, by Frans Johansson

From Booklist *Starred Review* Consider this book the millennial response to carpe diem, along with pretty explicit instructions on taking advantage of Lady Luck. Johansson actually borrows some techniques and tools from the creative world, especially following one’s curiosity to spotting momentum and intensity. He sets the stage for reader endorsements of his principles through tales of random successes, for instance Obama’s rapid rise after his keynote at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and Stephenie Meyer’s evolution of a dream into the Twilight saga. Their properties are simple to describe: they occur when two separate concepts, ideas, or people meet; they’re impossible to predict; and they elicit an emotional response, like awe or excitement. Creating them? Ah, that’s the focus of this book; a far more resonant subtitle might be How to Harness Purposeful Bets. It’s so not in the luck of the draw, Johansson asserts; it’s maximizing the world around you. A bit of science, a lot of psychology, a touch of wannabe Malcolm Gladwell, and the courage to click. Designed to become a best-seller. --Barbara Jacobs

Review “With his characteristic clarity, insight, and style, Frans Johansson presents an absorbing account of how randomness, serendipity, and ‘luck’ can be used to enhance success in business and in your own life.”—Sir Ken Robinson, author of The Element

Perfect Gift for Unemployed Smart People By Robert David STEELE Vivas I am a 60-year old unemployed person with no pensions, and received this book as a gift. It came to me as I am in the middle of writing what I hope will be a seminal work on the future of public governance, and to my enormous surprise, not only has the book been a "pick me up" of a read for me as the unemployed guy, it has also been relevant to my new book. The author's core message is: the world is random, embrace that, seek out as much random as you can handle, be alert for "aha" moments, and act instantly to take advantage when such moments occur. At the very end of the book the author says that one should use randomness to one's statistical advantage, which is to say, embrace the random, chase the random, respect the random, and your chances of "scoring" in some way will be better.I am loading an image above that includes the word diversity, in part to highlight why I connected immediately to the author's story of how innovation is inspired by diversity, what some CEO's who have a hard time understanding Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) programs can instantly get: a side door for insights that do not occur to white, well-fed, preening males. The author discusses very ably how "old world" is about rules and norms, this is a world where 10,000 hours of practice at anything will indeed make you a world champion, because the parameters are fixed and the rules don't change. In today's world, on the other hand, where a woman's slap can trigger a revolution in Tunesia and the downfall of Libya's dictator, not only are the "expedrts" wrong most of the time, but open platforms change everything--there are no binding rules (to which I would add, governments are so screwed up and ineffective that three fifths or more of the global economy now routes around government).Having just spent a year focused on "open everything" the author's discussion of how open platforms change everything and are a huge range of opportunity for all (no barriers to entry) resonates with me, and I am reminded of David Weinberger's book, Everything Is Miscellaneous: The Power of the New Digital Disorder as well as Marc Prensky's book, Don't Bother Me Mom--I'm Learning!. Our structured world is in disarray, and this is a good thing! As much as governments, corporations, and religions may resist the notion, the fixed patterns of the past are false patterns, imposed patterns, unsustainable patterns--get over it, and open up to the wealth that is random. As an avowed strategist, I respect the author's insight on page 83 where he stresses that in today's world a strategy is NOT about pre-planning, but rather about getting going. It is the fire starter, not to be confused with the kindling or the fire itself.About this point I have a note that the author is clearly well-read, but more importantly, he does a fine job of blending in references to a wide range of books that support his arguments while respecting the work of others. For me this is not as much a counter-intuitive books as it might be for others, but I certainly recommend it to one and all.Four ways to optimize and embrace the random:01 Take your eyes OFF the ball.02 Use inter-sectional thinking (BETWEEN cultures, BETWEEN disciplines, BETWEEN personalities).03 Follow your curiosity (it is one of the things that makes you you--makes you unique)04 Reject the predictable path (for those in my shoes, I think this means your job is never coming back, prepare for a 180 degree turn)The section on purposeful bets is the one that is no doubt touted to the start-up circles, but it applies to any individual that wants to become a renaissance person rather than a drone:01 Place many bets02 MINIMIZE bet size -- since I have no money I think in terms of time, this tells me to explore and partake of many many more possible paths, in small measured ways, rather than throwing myself into a full court press to find work in one particular industry that is actually just a spin off of my old industry (spying and multi-disciplinary analytics).03 Take the smallest executable step (i.e. smallest amount of time, money, involved parties)04 Calculate affordable loss rather than return on investment. I like this a lot -- the point is to increase opportunities, any one of which could be a huge return.05 Use passion as fuel (for creativity)The author goes on to discuss how complexity creates unintended consequences, cascade effects, and self-reinforcing loops. Also in this section are two gross errors that would normally cost the author a star, but I am giving him a bye: he does not understand the international violations that led to the theft of Libyan gold, water, and oil by the West; and he adopts the standard butterfly effect story (the butterfly analogy actually refers to the plotter design when the cascade effect is plotted out). Neither the NYT nor fact checkers are what they used to be.The book concludes with five strategies that are as applicable to individuals thinking about their next passage in life, as they are to start-ups, recent college graduates (great gift idea--along with the address of the nearest military recruiter, tell them to demand a contract in the intelligence occupational field).01 Create large hooks -- buy the book to understand this, it's worth it.02 Examine surprises carefully.03 Look for an opening everywhere.04 Spot momentum and ride it (I am reminded of Harrison Owen's superb Wave Rider: Leadership for High Performance in a Self-Organizing World)05 Double down when you find any opening -- do NOT ignore ANY opening.I like this book, and am acutely conscious that the author is avoiding all the negatives that have brought to to chaos today, my last few allowed links will capture both the pathos of the present and the prospects for the future. As I look over my shelf of books waiting to be delivered as donations to the Oakton Library, all non-fiction, I have to give the author credit: among all of them, this is the one that might actually help me find my next opportunity....and that, today, is precious.See Also:Vice: Dick Cheney and the Hijacking of the American PresidencyGriftopia: A Story of Bankers, Politicians, and the Most Audacious Power Grab in American HistoryThe Global Class War: How America's Bipartisan Elite Lost Our Future - and What It Will Take to Win It BackEmpowering Public Wisdom: A Practical Vision of Citizen-Led Politics (Manifesto Series)Sacred Economics: Money, Gift, and Society in the Age of TransitionEscaping the Matrix: How We the People can change the worldReflexive Practice: Professional Thinking for a Turbulent WorldBest wishes to all,Robert SteeleTHE OPEN SOURCE EVERYTHING MANIFESTO: Transparency, Truth & Trust

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Very Interesting and Insightful By John Chancellor The Click Moment presents a totally new way of thinking about success and how to achieve it. I have heard many pundits say "success leaves footprints - all you need to do is to watch what successful people have done and follow their steps." There is also the theory that mastery of any field requires 10,000 hours of deliberate practice.Frans Johansson turns both these theories on their head - first he says that success is not rational or predictable- that there is not a formula for success. One story to illustrate this point involves the mystery writer Stephen King. At one time Mr. King wrote a few novels under a pen name - same genre, same writing style - he followed the same steps but the novels were flops. When re-published under his own name, the novels were a success. As far as the 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to master a field, Mr. Johansson says that only applies to a very limited field. This theory holds true when you are dealing with an activity where the rules of mastery are slow to change. Tennis, golf, violin, are some activities where mastery of the activity can in fact be accomplished with intense practice. But writing novels, creating art, music, consumer products - all fields where the rules of the game change constantly and quite unpredictably do not come under the 10,000 hour concept. The book is presented in two parts. The first part deals with establishing that success in most fields is totally random and unpredictable. Our minds are hard wired to try to make sense of the world. We desperately want to find a rational reason why things happen. We engage in elaborate and detailed business plans to cover every detail and leave nothing to chance. But according to Mr. Johansson, instead of providing the success we seek, this behavior will actually stifle success. We need to understand and embrace the fact that success is random - that it involves luck - being at the right place at the right time. These random moments are what he describes as click moments - rare insights that if acted upon will lead to success.Part two of the book deals with seizing the opportunity when we encounter a click moment. In Part two he deals with how to create more click moments. We need to be more aware of what is going on around us. We also need to get out of our routine activities and expose ourselves to new and different experiences.Once you have identified a click moment, you need to understand the steps to capitalize on the bets. You do this by placing purposeful bets - this is not betting the farm on a new, risky project. This is a more controlled bet. Understanding how much you can afford to bet and what you expect to achieve from the bet.He also discusses complex forces. The human world is very complex. Humans are not rational. We behave emotionally and there are many different forces influencing our behavior. If you are going to achieve success, you need to understand these complex forces and how to harness them. The book gives you some step by step guidance for doing just that.Mr. Johansson is an extremely talented writer. I suspect he could take a mundane subject and make it highly interesting. But he has taken a subject which has captured man's imagination from the beginning of time and presented it in a highly interesting and informative manner. He tells amazing, little known stories to illustrate his point. He writes a very compelling book. You will find the book a breeze to read and I believe you will come away from this book with some new insightful ways to look at how to achieve success. One of the best books I have read in quite some time.I was provided a review copy of this book

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. The Click Moment By @fiercestrategy There are very few books I'll recommend let alone make required reading for my teams, clients, and business associates. The Click Moment is one book you must read. Provocative and engaging, Frans takes the principles, ideas, and realities of The Medici Effect and amps up the message. Luck, serendipity, and happen-stance are real, visceral, and important criteria for success...in everything. All the business plans, planning, and hyped-up 'best practices' don't mean anything when you miss out on the karma that comes from being front-and-center with the forces of nature that bend our way to enable greatness. Read this book over and over, instill its message, but most importantly, be aware of what you can do to create luck, serendipity and success that isn't taught in today's management development programs. Outstanding reading!

"[...] Still nearing the bay, the waters of which did the firemen good service, along the docks, the fire took the Rialto building, a handsome skyscraper, and converted scores of solid business blocks into smoldering piles of brick. Banks and commercial houses, supposed to be fireproof though not of modern build, burned quickly and the roar of the flames could be heard even on the hills, which were out of the danger zone. Here many thousands of people congregated and witnessed the awful scene. Great sheets of flame rose high in the heavens or rushed down some narrow street, joining midway between the sidewalks and making a horizontal chimney of the former passage ways. The dense smoke that arose from the entire business spread out like an[...]".

Helenski This collection of stories taken from contemporary journalism at the time of the earthquake is well worth a look. Another review mentions grammar and spelling problems, but there are none to speak of. The language and spelling is typical of the time. The stories are written with no hindsight, and therefor provide a compelling look at what was being said in the short time after the event. The final chapters are other materials on related disasters, not about San Francisco, as is typical even today in books rushed into print after an event.

"[...] BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICE. With the exception of Sir Egerton Brydges, who contributed to the GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE for 1791-2 a series of articles on the life and writings of the subject of the present memoir, all the biographers of Richard Lovelace have contented themselves with following the account left by Anthony Wood of his short and unhappy career. I do not think that I can do better than commence, at least, by giving word for word the narrative of Wood in his own language, to which I purpose to add such additional particulars in the form of notes or otherwise, as I may be able to supply. But the reader must not expect much that is new: for I regret to say that, after the most careful researches, I have not improved, to any large extent, the state of knowledge respecting this elegant poet and unfortunate man. "Richard Lovelace," writes Wood, "the eldest son of Sir William Lovelace of Woollidge in Kent, knight, was born in that country [in 1618],[...]".

The editorial and explanatory notes are intelligent and sympathetic By Goose Feather Despite a very erratic typography I rate this little book very highly. The poetry is as refreshing as the first time I read it years back. The editorial and explanatory notes are intelligent and sympathetic, and the inclusion of the commendatory verses of Lovelace's contemporaries provides insight into the literary and publishing conventions of the time. Lovelace, through his poetry, and through the notes of this volume's editor, comes across as a lively, sympathetic Cavalier.I conclude with this appreciation from Marvell's commendatory verses, which play with the perils of the period's censorship:  But when the beauteous ladies came to know,That their deare Lovelace was endanger'd so: Lovelace, that thaw'd the most congealed brest,He who lov'd best, and them defended best,Whose hand so rudely grasps the steely brand,Whose hand so gently melts the ladies hand,They all in mutiny, though yet undrest, Sally'd, and would in his defence contest.Lovelace, Richard (2012-05-12). Particularly how they view the sentiments of sex, love, honour and their duty to king and country. It's a rich source of quotable lines that finds application even today and though the spelling can throw you a bit, a couple of reads will take care of any confusion. I needed to quote some 17 century poetry for a novel and discovering Lovelace opened a new dimension.

A complete guide to using the best ingredients and minimal equipment to create fun and flavorful brews

Ancient societies brewed flavorful and healing meads, ales, and wines for millennia using only intuition, storytelling, and knowledge passed down through generations—no fancy, expensive equipment or degrees in chemistry needed. In Make Mead Like a Viking, homesteader, fermentation enthusiast, and self-described “Appalachian Yeti Viking” Jereme Zimmerman summons the bryggjemann of the ancient Norse to demonstrate how homebrewing mead—arguably the world’s oldest fermented alcoholic beverage—can be not only uncomplicated but fun.  Armed with wild-yeast-bearing totem sticks, readers will learn techniques for brewing sweet, semi-sweet, and dry meads, melomels (fruit meads), metheglins (spiced meads), Ethiopian t’ej, flower and herbal meads, braggots, honey beers, country wines, and even Viking grog, opening the Mead Hall doors to further experimentation in fermentation and flavor. In addition, aspiring Vikings will explore: •    The importance of local and unpasteurized honey for both flavor and health benefits; •    Why modern homebrewing practices, materials, and chemicals work but aren’t necessary; •    How to grow and harvest herbs and collect wild botanicals for use in healing, nutritious, and magical meads, beers, and wines; •    Hops’ recent monopoly as a primary brewing ingredient and how to use botanicals other than hops for flavoring and preserving mead, ancient ales, and gruits;  •    The rituals, mysticism, and communion with nature that were integral components of ancient brewing and can be for modern homebrewers, as well; •    Recommendations for starting a mead circle to share your wild meads with other brewers as part of the growing mead-movement subculture; and more!  Whether you’ve been intimidated by modern homebrewing’s cost or seeming complexity in the past—and its focus on the use of unnatural chemicals—or are boldly looking to expand your current brewing and fermentation practices, Zimmerman’s welcoming style and spirit will usher you into exciting new territory. Grounded in history and mythology, but—like Odin’s ever-seeking eye—focusing continually on the future of self-sufficient food culture, Make Mead Like a Viking is a practical and entertaining guide for the ages.

Make Mead Like a Viking: Traditional Techniques for Brewing Natural, Wild-Fermented, Honey-Based Wines and Beers, by Jereme Zimmerman

Review

Library Journal-

"Zimmerman originally documented his brewing experiments on his blog, jereme-zimmerman.com. After enthusiastic feedback from participants in the author’s mead workshops, he decided to publish a handbook on making mead with wild yeast, a practice at which the Vikings excelled. His recipes are straightforward and easy to follow, frequently including a story or tips to improve it. They often call for not only standard mead but also an unusual ingredient such as mushrooms, garlic, horehound, or marshmallow plant. Zimmerman packs this slim tome with honey-based brewing recipes, Viking mythology, Viking cultural history (as it applies to mead), a history of beekeeping, a guide to picking honey, how to drink mead, and equipment advice. While there are many mead-making titles on the market, the emphasis on wild yeast along with Zimmerman’s philosophy of experimentation and self-sufficiency make this a unique offering. VERDICT: Adventurous mead makers or brewers who want to move beyond the basics will find plenty to savor here.”

Booklist-

"After an exhausting day raiding coastlines and terrorizing natives, Vikings loved to relax with a nice quaff of mead. Over the centuries, mead retreated to merely a historical curiosity. But thanks to creative and adventuresome home brewers such as Zimmerman, mead has roared back to life. Zimmerman promotes natural fermentation from airborne yeasts, but for those lacking bold Viking genes, he offers advice on fermentation from commercial yeasts. Text is clear and very encouraging, and he makes mead accessible to both tyros and experienced brewers. Summarizing relevant equipment and ingredients, Zimmerman emphasizes that his disciples will produce their best meads if they don’t go overboard on sterilizing their equipment nor take all the joy out of mead making. Recipes go beyond basic mead to include Ethiopian t’ej, fruit-enhanced melomel, and metheglin, which scents mead with herbs and spices. A valuable addition to any collection that seeks to satisfy the creativity of home brewers.”

“A great guide to mead making, full of practical information and fascinating lore.”--Sandor Ellix Katz, author of The Art of Fermentation and Wild Fermentation

“This is a fun book―and fortunately, it doesn’t stop there. Coupled with the fun parts is a book that is informative and detailed in everything from choosing honey all the way to what kinds of corks to use. As a beekeeper who has always had lots of good raw honey on hand, I have made mead before but only in the kind of sterile environment that Jereme Zimmerman eschews. His book opened my eyes to the possibility of returning to the much more natural and time-honored ways of brewing this fascinating beverage.”--Jeffrey Hamelman, director, King Arthur Flour Bakery; author of Bread: A Baker’s Book of Techniques and Recipes

“Tradition meets modernity in this marvelous look at the ancient brewing of honey-based beverages.”--Mike Faul, owner and brewmaster, Rabbit’s Foot Meadery

“I really delighted in this inspired and informative read. Throw caution into the mead-making wind and relish the challenge of some of the more unusual flavorings and ingredients. I now feel more like being a Viking mead maker than ever, and coming from a Celt and fourth-generation mead maker that is something! Enjoy mead and make merry men and maidens.”--Sophia Fenton, director, Cornish Mead Co. Ltd.

“Jereme Zimmerman has captured the wild spirit of mead quite literally―as the quintessential naturally fermented beverage of humankind from the beginning, which reached its apotheosis with the Vikings. Without compromising its mysterious allure, he brings it down to earth for all to make and enjoy.”--Patrick E. McGovern, author of Ancient Wine and Uncorking the Past

“Make Mead Like a Viking puts the ME back in mead: my Scandinavian heritage simply sang when reliving the history, reading the recipes, and playing the drinking games he includes. And best yet . . . Zimmerman encourages mead makers to keep their own bees! There’s no better way to get the best honey there is than when you, and the bees you care for, make it happen together. For me, this is the perfect marriage.”--Kim Flottum, editor-in-chief, Bee Culture: The Magazine of American Beekeeping

Kniskern I was lucky enough to meet the author and now have a signed copy of this fine book.Mr. Zimmerman recalls the REALLY olden days of wild fermentation in this light-hearted look at Viking honey-mead making. The historical notes while extensive, do not overpower the information in this book. And this is an easy to follow guide to get started making your own meads and enjoying the huge varieties of tastes that can be made simply. What would have been nice, is to include this book in a package, with a large crock, carboy, and airlock, so that you could get started right away. You see, mead takes time. At a minimum, 3 weeks to get a young mead ready to drink. At maximum, years! So the sooner you can start brewing up your first batch, the better! This was a quick read, and the writing of Mr. Zimmerman is excellent. My only complaint is trying to pronounce the Viking words!

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. I'm eyeballing the fruit in the fridge... By Momster I came at this book as a former home winemaker, with all the sanitizing fuss and bother that goes with that. The idea that you could clean but not have to sanitize equipment and still get drinkable, quality products that wouldn't kill you was a whack across the head for me. But the more I read, the more the author's playful, what-the-heck experimental attitude appealed to me. He's made me want to dig out my carboys and airlocks and start wildly throwing things in to see what happens. I've even looked up a couple of local honey producers. In addition to his playfulness, Zimmerman's passion for all things Viking shines through in this book. He gives a good grounding in Norse mythology and culture, the history of and changes in mead making, and information on a wealth of variants that fall broadly under the "mead" category (even some on beers). Also, he's included recipes he's used and developed--although perhaps it would be better to call them guidelines, since he freely recommends departing from them at your whim. The concept and information on wild fermenting is, I think, worth the cost of the book all by itself. It had never occurred to me (why, I do not know) that yeasts abounded all around me and would be happy to leap into my primary fermenter and start having bubble-making parties. Nor had it occurred to me that the pellicle (a barrier layer) formed by top-fermenting yeasts had a protective function; I always thought it meant "batch spoiled; throw it out" (but then, I was making wine, not beer, and top-fermenting yeasts are important in beer). It's eminently sensible; nobody in neolithic times had packets of yeast, for pity's sake, but they certainly had fermented beverages.I suspect this will become a favorite gateway book for those wanting to try out mead making or take a less intimidating pathway into the world of home brewing. It's an easy, enjoyable, and absorbing read, one that takes frugality, sustainability, and responsibility seriously, and one with enough depth that you'll keep going back to it.

I've been hanging around the home-brew shop, asking questions. I've been sifting through online discussions, trying to find the right type of advice for me and how I relate to microorganisms. The beer and wine world seems impossibly technical and out of reach to me, being SO exact is no fun (for me). Sandor Katz is a favorite resource, but can be a bit unspecific sometimes. I had read an article you wrote about mead already and it had struck a cord, then I saw the new book and had to get it. It is AWESOME! You have written an excellent guide, and completely illuminated the process. I am so informed and inspired by the book, and feel the confidence to wander and experiment (I now have happily bubbling containers all over my kitchen.) You have managed to take a very complex subject and make it fun and accessible. Thank you!

"[...] PARENTS AND CHILDREN Trailing Clouds of Glory Childhood is a stage in the process of that continual remanufacture of the Life Stuff by which the human race is perpetuated. The Life Force either will not or cannot achieve immortality except in very low organisms: indeed it is by no means ascertained that even the amoeba is immortal. Human beings visibly wear out, though they last longer than their friends the dogs. Turtles, parrots, and elephants are believed to be capable of outliving the memory of the oldest human inhabitant. But the fact that new ones are born conclusively proves that they are not immortal. Do away with death and you do away with the need for birth: in fact if you went on breeding, you would finally have to kill old people to make room for young ones.[...]".

"[...]letter to the post office. There is something in it which concerns you and which will please you. I have to go now, but I shall tell you about it to-night." Cornelli was given the letter. Taking the remainder of her apple with her, she ran outside. With leaps and bounds she followed the rushing Iller-Stream, till the narrow path reached the wide country road. Here stood the stately inn, which was the post office of the place. In the open doorway stood the smiling and rotund wife of the innkeeper. "How far are you going at this lively pace?" she smilingly asked the child. "I am only coming to you," Cornelli replied. She was very much out of breath, so she paused before adding: "I have to mail a letter." "Is that so? Just give it to me and we'll attend to it," said the woman. Holding the hand the child had offered her, she added: "You are well off, Cornelli, are you not? You do not know what trouble is, do you, child?"[...]".

Cornelli, by Johanna Spyri

About the Author Johanna Spyri was a Swiss author of children s stories, best known for the classic coming-of-age tale Heidi: the Girl from the Alps. Spyri spent several summers in and around the mountainous area of Graub?nden as a child, and the Alps would serve as inspiration for much of her writing. Upon moving to Zurich with her husband, where she would remain for the rest of her life, Spyri published her first story, Ein Blatt auf Vronys Grab ( A Note on Vrony s Grave ), a gritty tale of a woman suffering from the abuse of her alcoholic husband. Yet it would be in children s writing that Spyri would truly make her markHeidi was published to great international acclaim in 1880, and has gone on to become one of the best-selling children s classics of all time. In 1884, both Spyri s husband and only child passed away, and Spyri devoted herself to charitable causes for the remainder of her life, writing fifty more stories before her own death in 1901.

If only I had known how valuable it was! It's a lovely book, very similar in story and theme to Heidi. Written with the same innocent descriptive tone, but with a few different plot points. Spyri uses a light touch on serious topics, so this book can be a little sad, but never actually scary. Books like it are The Secret Garden, The Little Princess, and of course, Heidi.

Timeless By Annemie Johanna Spyri is one of the best authors of children books - Heidi is her best known book but all her books deal with children, their difficulties at a young age and the right attitude to take. The books have all a deep spiritual side as well and do not necessarily end as expected. Highly recommend any of her books.

All as good as Heidi By Ray All of Johanna Spyri's books are beautifully written and engaging, with three-dimensional characters, both adults and children, whose feelings, actions and motives are insightfully and compassionately drawn. Subtle lessons in morality and the slow building of character through real, lived experience (mistakes!) seem always to have been her underlying themes. No heavy handed preaching here. No one-dimensional right and wrong--every situation complex just like today's world. (Though clearly not!) Truly great books for both parents and elementary age children to read --great modeling of parenting skills, even though nineteenth century! Adults helping children, but letting them learn by doing and living and expressing themselves creatively. There is a Complete Works of Johanna Spyri available from the Print On Demand supplier on Amazon.

Marketing today is out of control. With all the new marketing techniques accessible to the masses, it’s becoming harder and harder to stand out from the crowd. The result is more and more messages, hitting us more often in new and more intrusive ways. For customers, it’s a lot of noise.Through her work with a wide range of organizations from small companies to professional service providers to Fortune 500 companies, Linda Popky has developed Dynamic Market Leverage™, an approach to help cut through the clutter, stand out, and effectively build business.Marketing Above the Noise takes a contrarian approach by not focusing on social media, digital marketing, or other new tactics, and instead helping organizations understand:

  • The critical upfront work needed to really understand customers, markets and unmet needs
  • The value of consistent, focused messaging
  • Why empowering employees to effectively represent the brand is so critical
  • How to thrive in an age of user-generated content and customer driven marketing
  • Why it’s key not to confuse selling with installing
The book introduces the Dynamic Market Leverage Model, which measures marketing clout by looking at eight core marketing disciplines and five additional Leverage Factors that can help an organization focus on key aspects of their marketing function that will provide the most significant return on their marketing investment.Today’s businesses need to stop trying to keep pace with the latest and greatest marketing tactics and instead focus on developing those long term strategies that build customer loyalty and convince prospects to buy. Yes, businesses need to be aware of and integrate new media and new approaches, but they need to do it in a way that makes sense for the business. They need to maintain a clear focus above the din of the roaring crowd—above the marketing fray. Most organizations don’t have the luxury of being able to start from a clean slate to develop new marketing strategies. They have existing customers, existing channels and relationships, existing ways of doing business. With limited resources, they’re not able to integrate every new tactic as it appears and they’re not sure how to prioritize all of these options. What’s needed is a timeless framework—a way of looking at marketing as tied to both business growth and the building and nurturing of ongoing customer engagement. It’s time to move the focus from social media and evangelists, sales and marketing alignment, and the latest hot cloud-based marketing tools, to what really counts: convincing customers to trust you with their business—not just once, but time and time again.

Marketing Above the Noise: Achieve Strategic Advantage with Marketing that Matters, by Linda J Popky

Review “A lot of marketing talk focuses on technology: Twitter, Facebook, viral videos, clicks. Linda Popky understands that technology is an important piece of the puzzle, but not THE most important piece. Her back-to-basics approach builds on foundational values like trust, relationship-building, and resilience to create customer interest and loyalty. Marketing Above the Noise speaks to marketers in their language, but it really shines when the author digs into what specific companies are doing right and wrong." – Daniel H. Pink, best-selling author of Drive and To Sell is Human“Because of the near infinite amount of information available on the web, buyers now have more information than sellers. It is a new world requiring smart marketers to educate and inform instead of interrupt and sell. Linda Popky shares strategies and tactics that work in this new environment and how to implement them to grow your business.” – David Meerman Scott, best-selling author of ten books including The New Rules of Marketing and PR“It may seem counterintuitive in our new social and digital world, but many aspects of marketing are timeless and still relevant today. In more cases than not, I find marketing lacking. That’s not good, because along with performance, effective marketing is the prerequisite for success. Linda Popky lays out what it takes to succeed. Marketing Above the Noise is accessible, practical, and results-focused—a must-read not just for marketers but for anyone in a company who works closely with marketing to create results for the company.” – Kate Purmal, former SVP Digital Content at SanDisk, now co-founder and COO of CoPilot Systems“As a musician and business owner, I love how Linda uses many musical metaphors to illustrate her marketing points. Warren Buffett By Robert Morris I selected the Buffett statement because it correctly affirms the importance of perceived value and the primacy of the consumer's perspectiveSince the marketplaces in ancient Greece and then Rome, marketing's purpose has been - and continues to be - creating or increasing demand for whatever is offered, be it a smartphone or a magazine subscription, a light beer or a children's toy. Competition for consumer attention now is much greater than it was at any prior time that I can remember. The difficulty of that exacerbated by the fact that - mostly because of the Web - consumers are better informed today than ever before. They control the purchase decision process.I agree with Linda Popky that marketers should focus on "developing those long-term strategies that build customer loyalty and convince prospects to buy. Yes, businesses need to be aware of new media and new approaches and be prepared to integrate them. But they need to do this in a way that makes sense for their business. They need to maintain a clear focus above the din of the roaring crowd - above the marketing noise."How to do that? Popky recommends using the Dynamic Marketing Leverage Assessment Model which examines eight marketing principles "that have been at the core of good marketing initiatives for a long, long time." More specifi9c ally, she refers to strategy, products and/ort services, customers, brand, communication, operations, sales channels, and market analysis. Interaction between and among them must be carefully coordinated at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. These are among the dozens of passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of Popky's coverage:o How Do You Get Above the Noise?, and, Figure 1-2: The Dynamic Market Leverage Model (Pages 10-12)o Change Is the New Constant (15-18)o The Five Stages of the Purchase Process (27-30)o Demand Generation (40-41)o Conversations, Content, and Communities (43-48)o Go to Market Means Go to Consumers (65-66)o What Does the Ideal Bank Look Like (81-84)o Five Ways to Generate Demand (86-98)o Are We Harmonizing or Shouting at Each Other? (132-133)o Setting the Table (137-138)o Context Counts (144-145)o Using Social Sharing to Save Lives (146-148)o The Five Momentum Factors (158-170)Once again, I agree with Linda Popky: "Now, more than ever before, we need marketing stewardship. Just as a good orchestra needs a good conductor [and a great orchestra has a great conductor], we need strong marketing leaders who understand both the business and the craft of marketing. We need these people to be well integrated into the organization so they can tie marketing to the overall objectives of the business. Only then can we help our organization find their true voice and be heard above the noise."In fact, I am among those who believe that [begin italics] everyone [end italics] within an organization should be actively and continuously involved in efforts to create or increase demand, not only for products and services but also for employment, career opportunities, and joint ventures. Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba wrote a book in which they explain how to create what they characterize as "customer evangelists." Companies annually ranked among those that are most highly regarded and best to work for are also annually ranked among those that are most profitable and have the greatest cap value in their competitive marketplace. Yes, they all have customers who are "evangelists" as well as employees (or associates, if you prefer) who are also evangelists. Marketing is a constant sport and in the most successful companies, everyone is a player.

By Robbie Kellman Baxter, author of The Membership Economy As a professional marketer and as an author myself, I love this book. It's smart, fun-to-read and actionable. Popky has done it all--she's been on the agency side, the corporate side and been an outside advisor to CMOs--so she really understands what works.I have seen a lot of marketers get caught up in the details, focusing on specific campaigns, or the channel-of-the moment, and forget to focus on what really matters--being heard by the right people, and ultimately, generating revenue.Popky's Dynamic Market Leverage™, an approach to help cut through the clutter, stand out, and effectively build business, is a tremendous tool for organizations, and can help them see beyond social, digital and all the other tactics, to develop a clear strategy that will get results.I highly recommend it!Robbie Kellman BaxterAuthor of The Membership Economy
