3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An engaging tale from a bygone era By Gordon Prince This story centers on lies that are more than "white" lies. The lies are about substantial events and have significant consequences. Very broad sweep, spanning a period of several years, these characters wrestle with honor and duty at the time of Napoleon. The author renders a fast paced story about how lies (and everything else) have many unintended consequences, many of which cannot be undone. The book surprised me and in the end I was sorry to leave this era and these characters behind.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Very Entertaining By Gauffroi This is one of those rare books that I have read multiple times, and is enjoyable each time. It is not a soap opera, the characters are believable and you feel you know them well by the end of the book. It is an accurate portrayal of life in the Roman empire (and a much more accurate portrayal of emperor Commodus than the one in The Gladiator). Some readers may be put off by the early 20th Century prose style of the author because it is unfamiliar these days -- but the style is simply a bit more elaborate, causing descriptions to be more vivid. In all, an excellent read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Historical Fiction: Always a Dilemma With Fact and Fiction By Squire Toad Well written, and I too enjoy the author's style (as described in the first review). However, given that this is fiction (e.g., no reference, no footnotes), I must wonder when he writes of certain things as if they were true. Example: wounds healing fine, and then becoming infected when "treated" by washing with clean water and then "anointing" with olive oil. Is this likely? And then the slave Agathemer bringing along his flageolet. The flageolet is a sort of flute, according to its Wiki entry invented in the 16th Century and NOT in the 2d Century AD. Never the less, it's a very good read, especially if one has an interest in the Roman civilization during this (or any other) period.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Derring-do, intrigue, nasty emperors, cross and double-cross, breathtaking escapes... By Diana Wilder ...and that's just the first third of this story. This book was published in the early 20th century. My father read it after his Latin teacher recommended it. Years later he tracked it down and told me to read it. I loved it.This is a very long book. In this age where novels are now 50,000 words (!) this one weighs in at probably five times that amount. Possibly more. I read it all, though I admit I skipped parts that didn't hold my interest (do people do that any more?)Now it's available for kindle, I'm glad to have it.

PDF Ebook Online The Economics and Organization of Brazilian Agriculture: Recent Evolution and Productivity Gains, by Fabio Chaddad

The Economics and Organization of Brazilian Agriculture: Recent Evolution and Productivity Gains presents insights on Brazilian agriculture and its impressive gains in productivity and international competitiveness, also providing insightful examples for global policymakers.

In Brazil, as in many countries, many economists and policymakers believe that agriculture is a traditional, low-tech sector that crowds out the development of other economic sectors and the country. This book shows that this anti-agriculture bias is ill-informed, and with population growth, rising incomes, urbanization and diet changes – especially in developing countries like China and India – on the rise, the demand for food is expected to double in the next 40 years.

Brazil has the natural resources, technology and management systems in place to benefit from this expected growth in food consumption and trade. Through real-world examples, the book shows how other low-latitude countries with tropical climate and soils like Brazil – especially in sub-Saharan Africa – can benefit from the agricultural technology, production, and management systems developed in Brazil. Case studies in each of three key categories, including technology, resource management, and effective government programs provide valuable insights into effective decision-making to maximize the effect of each.

  • Provides important and practical insights into achievable agricultural options via case studies
  • Addresses the use of natural resources, technological advances, and management systems to create viable, adaptive economic growth
  • Applies lessons learned in Brazil to improving both economic and ecological resource-sustainable agriculture for other regions and countries

Guiding you (and your pets) safely through the dangers of winter By Tim MacWelch For those who have commented on our antifreeze tip - I thank you so much for your concern for the environment and our companion animals. I know for a fact that everyone involved in the production of this book loves their pets (and yours too), and we want every one of them to be safe and happy. The section that seems to be creating confusion for a few people is a section on leaving your home vacant and without heat for the winter. There I recommend using antifreeze or rubbing alcohol in the toilet to keep it from freezing and shattering. I stand by my statement, as my family has used this trick successfully for years. It's important to note that there are several brands of pet-safe and environmentally safe antifreeze on the market. Additionally, the book was very clear that this technique is for an unoccupied home - so no pets should have access to these treated toilets. Since this book was written with the intention of safely guiding you through winter, it would be beneficial for readers to hear how the book fared as a survival guide and rated accordingly. Thanks - the author.

The Glimpses of the Moon, by Edith Wharton

Review As Wharton tells [the] story, the sharp irony of both her prose and her characters bleeds into pools of true feeling. --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Edith Wharton was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist, known for such classics as The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and The Age of Innocence, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1921. A member of the New York elite, Wharton drew on her experiences as part of society to critique its inner workings and the conflict between personal desires and societal norms. Wharton died in 1937, leaving behind a rich literary legacy.

25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Honeymoon trials By E. A Solinas Edith Wharton won the Pulitzer in 1921, for her social romantic tragedy "Age of Innocence." What to do after a triumph like that?Well, in Wharton's case, she went the opposite direction, with a gentle romance called "The Glimpses of the Moon." It's the cliched love-or-money storyline that's existed as long as love and money, but Wharton elevates it with some social satire and lushly sensual writing.Nick Lansing and Susy Branch are young, attractive, clever, arty, and poor -- they are confidantes of the wealthy, but can't live like them. So Susy comes up with a scheme: they'll get married, and live for a year off the honeymoon gifts and guest houses -- and if either of them gets a better offer, they'll divorce immediately with no hard feelings. All goes smoothly for the idyllic first months. But when staying in Venice, Nick finds that they are staying at a villa because Susy is helping the house's mistress meet up with her boytoy -- and that Susy's acid-tongued pal has just inherited a fortune. But despite their pact, Susy finds it increasingly difficult to imagine a life without Nick -- especially when he seems to be involved with a clever young archaeologist's daughter. The story of "Glimpses of the Moon" is not the selling point of this onetime bestseller -- you can pretty much guess how it will turn out, and how many days the pact between Nick and Susy will last. In fact, it's kind of astonishing that Hollywood hasn't nabbed this one rather than the tragic "Ethan Frome" or the bittersweet "Age of Innocence."But the beauty of "Glimpses of the Moon" is how it's presented -- Wharton's prose relaxes into a sensual feast of decayed villas, bright sunlight, rich colours and luxurious details. It slacks off as Nick and Susy's relationship deteriorates, but the first half is awash in beautiful imagery ("... a great white moth like a drifting magnolia petal"). And of course, we always have the overhanging symbolism of the moon. And it wouldn't be a Wharton book without some social commentary -- in this case, about the idle wealthy eagerly snatching onto any trendy artist, illicit lover or amusement that will fill their empty days. And of course, the lesson that love should trump greed.Wharton's knack for characterization doesn't hurt either -- Nick is a penniless artist hoping to keep this pact-marriage together, and Susy a social wit without many scruples, until she inadvertantly drives Nick away. The supporting characters could have a book devoted to each one as well -- the acid-tongued peer, a rather snotty young girl, and a desperate wealthy matron bouncing from one "toyboy" relationship to another."Glimpses of the Moon" is a simple boy-and-girl story, but with a clever social twist questioning what happens AFTER happily-ever-after. Romantic, sensual and sometimes tartly amusing.

One of my favorite love stories By A Customer I was completely spell bound by this book, you cant guess the end ,though i did try, You are in constant anticipation as to the next turn of events , and extatic one minute and ,holding you breath the next. what a fabulous ending.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. an entertaining oddball of a book By mulcahey Given the flawlessly smooth machinery of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH and THE CUSTOM OF THE COUNTRY, it's kind of weird to come across a Wharton novel as structurally sloppy as this one. More uncharacteristically yet, the first three chapters, in my opinion, are just plain shabbily written. But Wharton is never without her reasons, and once she's disposed of the characters' "backstory" as expeditiously (if inelegantly) as possible at the top of the book, she hits her stride in earnest and gives us all of the pleasures of a great Wharton tale -- chiseled prose, trenchant humor, sociological precision, briskly paced and compactly dramatized.Something that strikes me about this book: it'd make a much better movie, be much easier to adapt, than either HOUSE OF MIRTH or AGE OF INNOCENCE. It's got fewer locations, a much smaller cast of characters -- heck, it even has a happy ending, and an honestly earned one. (In fact, the conceit it starts with -- a couple in love who'd like to stay together, but alas, there's no money in it -- is pretty much the idea Preston Sturges started with in THE PALM BEACH STORY, an audience-pleaser for sure.)

From the Back Cover At the turn of the 20th century, Winston Churchill was the most popular novelist in the United States, the J.K. Rowling of his day--his second novel, Richard Carvel, sold a phenomenal two million copies, and his extraordinary fame forced the British Winston Churchill--the future prime minister whom we associate with the name today--to use his middle name to avoid confusion with his American counterpart.

This 1904 novel is considered by many to be Churchill's best, a sweeping historical romance of the settling of the Kentucky frontier during the American Revolution. Meticulously researched, it features appearances by such legendary names as George Rogers Clark, Simon Kenton, and Daniel Boone.

A century after it was written, Churchill's sensitive and poetic prose continues to bring the era and its players alive for readers today.

About the Author Winston Churchill was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Smith Academy in Missouri and the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1894. After his graduation, he became editor of the Army and Navy Journal. He resigned from the navy to pursue a writing career. In 1895, he became managing editor of the Cosmopolitan Magazine, but in less than a year he retired from that, to have more time for writing. While he would be most successful as a novelist, he was also a published poet and essayist.

I read this book as it was mentioned in my family history as a good description of the frontier in Kentucky around the Revolution. I rarely read novels but this book captured my attention and was a great read. It transported me back to a much tougher time in American history and in the area where my ancestors were located. It gave life and meaning to the hardships of my ancestors lives.

Crossing into Kentucky By A Customer My dad was born in 1921 in the farmlands of Edgar County, Illinois, and the Crossing by Winston Churchill (not the British leader) was his favorite book as a young boy. It is a tale of US western expansion, especially the crossing over the mountains into Kentucky, and much of the story is told through the eyes of a rather wide-eyed young man. I would recommend this book to parents who want to develop a love of history in their children and who want to spend time reading books together -- the rhythm of the author's writing is especially wonderful when read out loud. I would imagine boys would especially love this tale; however, I loved it, also, and I'm about as girlie a girl as you can get!

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. This Winston Churchill was Not Sir Winston S. Churchill By A Customer This is an excellent book about frontier days. There is a common misconception about this book that many (including one other review) commonly fall into. This book was not written by the Brittish Prime Minister Sir Winston S. Churchill but rather by an american authour called winston churchill who was very popular at the turn of the century but who is sadly forgotton today. This other Winston churchil wrote several novels at the turn of the century. The way to tell the two apart is that the future prime minister always used the inital s. as did the early editions of his books. Unfortunetly reprints may not follow this rule.

After the crisis of 2008, the social contract between the financial industry and everyone else was badly broken-perhaps, it seemed, irrevocably. Since then, banks have paid out billion-dollar settlements and Congress has passed some new laws, but a deeper rapprochement is still missing. John Taft has gathered some of the greatest financial minds of our time to explore how Wall Street can harness the same creative energy that invented credit default swaps and channel it towards the public good- in the form of a stable retirement system, investment strategies that protect the environment and reward responsible corporate behavior, and a financial industry with a culture of ethics, integrity and client focus. These perspectives, from a who's who of leaders in the field, offer a blueprint for a new kind of responsible finance and banking that secures the future for everyone. Contributors include:

* Robert Shiller on financial capitalism and innovation

*Charles D. Ellis on restoring ethical standards

*Sheila Bair on regulatory reform

*John C. Bogle and Mary Schapiro on rebuilding investor trust

*Judd Gregg on long-term fiscal imbalances

*Barbara Novick on the retirement savings gap

*David Blood on sustainable finance.

With so much brainpower in the financial sector, the potential for change is limitless. A Force for Good is the call to action the industry sorely needs.

Review

“[A] thoughtful, albeit challenging, exploration of the hard road back to credibility for the financial industry...readers are likely to come away with renewed hope in our financial system's future.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Timely and insightful, this refreshing book is a beacon of hope and wisdom for generations to come.” ―Clara Shih, CEO and founder of Hearsay Social, Board Director at Starbucks, and author of The Facebook Era

“John Taft has compiled a powerful collection of original essays from America's thought leaders which provides a timely roadmap for the future of capitalism. If policy makers follow the advice of Taft and his colleagues, capitalism can be the greatest economic engine ever created.” ―Bill George, Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School, former Chair and CEO at Medtronic and author of True North

“John Taft set himself a difficult task: understand how skewed incentives for financial professionals brought on the Great Recession. A Force for Good collects the best analysis and advice from some of our wisest participants and observers. We all owe them--and John a huge thank you for reimagining how our system can be more broadly conceived, more stable, and more moral.” ―Tom Steyer, Investor, Philanthropist, Clean Energy Advocate

“Can capitalism--the greatest system of economic organization the world has ever seen--be improved upon? 'Yes,' contend the bold-face names who have contributed essays to A Force for Good. Economic policy wonks, no matter what their political orientation, will find something here to agree with, something to disagree with and--perhaps most important--something to ponder.” ―James Grant, editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer

“This compilation of thought-provoking insights from leaders in finance tackles the tough issues that harm investor trust and offers inspiration to the profession to work together toward building a financial industry that better serves society.” ―Aaron Low, Chair, CFA Institute Board of Governors

“After numerous years in which it seemed like the world of finance can do nothing right, John Taft's book reminds us that finance has a vital role to play in the betterment of American lives. Dispensing Wall Street braggadocio in favor of honestly earned wisdom, Taft marshals some of the financial world's sagest thinkers to help restore values and purpose to the financial community. A Force for Good is not just an important book--it's an optimistic one.” ―Richard Bradley, Editor-in-Chief, WORTH

“Taft is the sort of leader finance needs as it emerges from the crisis.” ―Matthew Bishop, New York Bureau Chief, The Economist

About the Author John G. Taft is CEO of RBC Wealth Management, one of the largest full-service investment, advisory and wealth management firms in the US. Informative and different, somewhat dry, but at least, readable By Eric Sedensky The premise (promise?) of this book is mildly exciting: Get a bunch of qualified, serious-minded, economic thinkers and doers, and have them analyze the recent economic crisis and the current state of economic affairs so that they can then lend us an ethical and moral standard on which to base future economic activity so that everybody ends up better off and economic crises become things of the past. The list of essay writers reads like a veritable who’s who of economic thought, which raises the expectations higher. The editor, himself a leading economic thinker, explains how the book came into being and what it is trying to accomplish, and then, off we go.As with any collection of essays, some are better than others. Most of them have at least one really good idea, many have multiple great ideas. For me, the best essays were those that supplied miniature history lessons with solid analysis before they launched into the explanation of their suggested remedy. Part 3 especially contains a number of highly readable and very informative essays, including ones from John Bogle, founder of Vanguard and Douglas Hodge, CEO of Pimco. (Yale University economist Robert Schiller has an excellent essay just prior to the section that sets it up nicely, too.) The basic common tenet throughout the book is, companies and individuals who are entrusted with other people’s money need to act responsibly, not be greedy, and use a moral and high ethical approach to business. It sounds good, and more than a few of the contributors make it sound achievable. A number of the essays, however, fall back on legislation and legislating bodies (politicians) as the way to go, but given the current pusillanimous state of Congress, those ideas (I thought) fell flat. Formulating laws and regulations to force companies and trustees to act ethically works great, until it doesn't, and, we cannot legislate our way out of troubles that we cannot foresee. To their credit, a number of the writers proposing legislation mention this dilemma, but I never came across a concrete methodology for making this an effective solution.Ultimately, there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the ideas and proposals and supporting theoretical arguments that are presented by the great thinkers assembled here. I would even go so far as to say that for Mr. Taft to assemble, interpret and edit these essays in this fashion and boldly call it “A Force for Good” is a laudable achievement. Unfortunately, this book is long on ideas and short on real answers. When I finished the book, however, I felt I had learned a lot and I was glad to have had the opportunity to look at the state of the world economy from so many and such wide ranging viewpoints. This book is interesting and informative enough, but not the most exciting read on the economy, which is why I give it three stars.

The author, John G. Taft, has a fine education and experience to qualify him for such a book, and the book offers lots of details, with opinions from many noted people like Sheila Bair, John Bogle, etc.The book says the word, finance is derived from the Latin word, finis, meaning end, and the Latin term meaning goal. So, finance is intended to reach an end, a goal, inferring a longer term objective. Taft sees one of the main reasons for the crash was too much short term thinking, driven largely to increase the stock price, especially since executives are rewarded with stock options. Plus, since the stock price is driven higher when the company exceeds analyst estimates, rather than real results, it is a phony way to value a stock, especially no matter what real or estimated results are, the CEO can just offer positive 'guidance. So, the author says executive pay should not be depended on short term moves in stock prices. Further, the author says a company's mission should be not just for the benefit of stock holders, but put clients/customers first. Historically, investment houses, like Goldman Sachs, were partnerships, with the added incentive to put the client first because assets of the partners were at risk, too. He recommends a "fiduciary capitalism" where banks have an explicit fiduciary role. Also, he advocates a "sustainability capitalism" where a corporation also should include financial negatives and positives for how a company has affected the environment, too.He thinks there also should be super fiduciaries which try to hold companies to such standards, even sustainability concerns. He sees CALPERS, the CA pension system and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as examples.I recommend this book for any CEO or high ranking government official and anyone who is interested in the 2008 crash and ways to improve our form of capitalism.

McGee This book's publication date, interestingly enough, is the seventh anniversary of the day that JP Morgan Chase agreed to save Bear Stearns from collapse and bankruptcy by picking it up for a fire sale price (at the behest of regulators). As it turned out, that was just the first shoe to drop; six months later, the full fury of the financial crisis was unleashed. If it's disconcerting that we're still debating fundamental questions such as what went wrong, what banks and other financial institutions could or should be doing better or differently, seven years later, it's even more so to realize that so many of the diagnoses and prescriptions by the contributors to this anthology of essays are so fundamental in nature. Many of them boil down to finding ways to ensure that those in finance find a way to view themselves as part of the broader society, owing a responsibility and duty of care to constituencies other than their shareholders and themselves. (In other words, finance is about more than doing as many deals as rapidly as possible, regardless of the level of risk.) That said, financial institutions are proving very adept at the Darwinian struggle for survival. Even as the costs of being a very large bank have soared -- in terms of the regulatory burden and the costs of meeting that burden -- the banks have cut costs and still managed to keep turning out profits, pushing back on calls for them to break themselves apart into smaller institutions.Taft, who comes from the asset management side of Wall Street (aka the kinder/gentler side) has long spoken out from inside the tent about the need for reforms and changes -- for a "duty of care" on the part of financial institutions. The essays assembled here largely reflect his perspective and, to the extent they come from those who have been in the public eye (former FDIC head Sheila Bair, Jack Bogle of Vanguard, or erstwhile SEC head, Mary Schapiro) don't deviate much from what any of those individuals have said previously in other contexts. Charles Ellis provides insights and thoughts along with an update on his perspective of Goldman Sachs (he's the author of a quasi-authorized history of the firm). More interesting input comes from those contributors who bring to the debate some kind of corporate social responsibility perspective; various contributors here argue for "sustainable capitalism" and in favor of "fiduciary capitalism". One of the most provocative contributions comes from Karen Petrou, a consultant, who points out that simply heaping more regulation atop the banks can prove counterproductive. It also, she argues, misses out on the fact that many non-bank entities are increasingly important to the financial system: Google and PayPal, to name only two, might warrant as much scrutiny as any bank in the coming years, given their increased prominence as financial intermediaries. There are two big problems with this anthology. The first is probably inevitable with any book of this kind: so many ideas are thrown into the hopper that it's impossible to pull them together in a coherent fashion. (Maybe President Obama needs to appoint Taft as his finance tsar?) Secondly -- and it's a big one -- is the fact that in all this there is no input from the people most criticized. No bankers speak out; no hedge fund managers; no private equity wheeler dealers. Without their input and thoughts, any solutions are going to end up being imposed and artificial and doomed to failure. So, points for effort to the architects of this book, but I still think that the title should have come with a question mark at the end. It's up to the financial services industry to prove that they can generate value for the rest of us; the suggestions here (or at least some of them) are, at best, only a starting point for a debate that I'm not sure the intended audience -- the bankers themselves -- are willing to join in.

"[...] "Ah, upon another face perhaps it might," replied her husband; "but never on yours. No, dearest Georgiana, you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection." "Shocks you, my husband!" cried Georgiana, deeply hurt; at first reddening with momentary anger, but then bursting into tears. "Then why did you take me from my mother's side? You cannot love what shocks you!" To explain this conversation it must be mentioned that in the centre of Georgiana's left cheek there was a singular mark, deeply interwoven, as it were, with the texture and substance of her face. In the usual state of her complexion—a healthy though delicate bloom—the mark wore a tint of deeper crimson, which imperfectly defined its shape amid the surrounding rosiness. When she blushed it gradually became more indistinct, and finally vanished amid the triumphant rush of blood that bathed the whole cheek with its brilliant glow. But if any shifting motion caused her to turn pale there was the mark again, a crimson stain upon the snow, in what Aylmer sometimes deemed an almost fearful distinctness. Its shape bore not a little similarity to the human hand, though of the smallest pygmy size. [...]".

Mosses from an Old Manse and other stories, by Nathaniel Hawthorne

About the Author Nathaniel Hawthorne (born Nathaniel Hathorne; July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in 1804 in the city of Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hathorne and the former Elizabeth Clarke Manning. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. Hawthorne anonymously published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828. He published several short stories in various periodicals which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at a Custom Houseand joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to The Wayside in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, and was survived by his wife and their three children. -wikipedia

He was one of America’s greatest writers of his time, His books – such as: The scarlet Letter, The House of Seven gables, and The Marble Faun, are repeatedly being reprinted. People of virtually all ages will be able to appreciate his skill and enjoy how he tells his stories by reading the tales in this volume. The stories include: The Birthmark, Young Goodman Brown, Rappaccini Daughter, Mrs. Bullfrog, The Celestial Railroad, The Procession of Life Feathertop, and others. All are good and unusual. In The Birthmark, for example, a scientist decides to remove a birthmark from the face of his beautiful wife, a mark that he used to think added to her beauty, but now disgusts him. His wife also begins to dislike the mark. In Young Goodman, to cite another example, a man living in Salem during the days of the witch trials there meets the devil.

Hawthorne must have been known mainly for satire, but satire is only passable when you have some idea of what is being satirized, so some of this went right over my head (e.g., a satire on "Pilgrim's Progress", which I haven't read).

A research-based portfolio strategy that uses Fed signals to forecast security market performance

It's often said that the chairman of the Fed is the second most powerful person in the world, next only to the president of the United States. Some say the chairman is even more powerful. When Ben Bernanke publicly stated on September 8, 2013, the Fed's intent to continue its policy of quantitative easing, global markets instantly reversed direction from a worrying downward spiral to an exuberant upward surge. Even POTUS can't do that.

The authors of Invest with the Fed take the simple position that correct interpretation of Federal Reserve policy actions leads to better investing decisions. To this end, they present strategies that will help you design a portfolio that takes Fed policy into account.

The result of three decades of research, Invest with the Fed reveals how the nation's bank routinely signals important clues about its future policy--and it explains how you can use these clues to enhance your portfolio performance.

Learn all there is to know about the implications that Fed policy changes have for:

  • Value and growth investing
  • Behavioral and EMT approaches

Taking Advantage of Fed Interest Rate Moves By TDOMotFT An excellent assessment of how Fed actions impact stock prices and how to take advantage of Fed interest rate trends. The book ends with a fairly easy approach to equity investing that delivers an amazing return premium of 8.8%/year.Their approach breaks the Fed interest rate changes into Expansive, Indeterminate and Restrictive situations depending on the direction of changes to the Federal Funds Rate and the Fed Discount Rate. Various investment strategies are presented for each of these situations (Value versus Growth, Real Estate, Commodities, Sector Rotation, International, and Fixed-Income among others) with some being highly successful and others not. Their work is summarized with a Rotation Strategy (each consisting of five asset classes) that provides above average results for each of the three Fed interest rate change situations. While the book is fairly helpful in how to use their learning, the one glaring omission is lack of a table showing Fed interest rate changes and the Expansive, Indeterminate, and Restrictive situations they map into. It would be helpful to the reader to see exactly how they determined these periods in order for the reader to correctly identify the Fed stance moving forward. There is much to recommend their approach given the Fed’s influence on the U.S. economy. However, to the extent the future differs from the past, the specific strategies suggested may not provide extra return. For example, part of the investment rotation approach involves investing in energy stocks. Energy prices (and oil company valuations) rose nicely for decades under OPECs dominance of oil prices. Will US fracking (and increased fracking worldwide) reverse this trend? Another part of the rotation involves investment in Emerging Markets. China’s rapid growth has contributed strongly to Emerging Markets results. Will the maturing of China’s economy lessen Emerging Markets future returns?

Second, it is very obvious to me that Bob Johnson and his colleagues did an amazing amount of research to back up various statements and themes with facts and examples. Third, all of the suggestions and points are backed up with great logic that make a lot of sense to me. Fourth, the book should have multiple audiences. I think every portfolio manager would need it as a first read and then as a reference book on his or her shelf. They should refer to it periodically as they may be changing their own investment styles from time to time. Finally, maybe the policy makers at the FED should be made aware of the many findings as they may not be aware of the many linkages Johnson, et al have discovered. Aside from these points, as an academic myself, the book serves as a quick refresher on many classic Finance fronts. For example, it brings in the efficient market hypothesis and the various aspects of the methods for measuring risk at many key places. A minor point is, on the Kindle, the bar diagrams and summary tables seem a bit too small to really read.

The Mystery of Choice, by Robert William Chambers

About the Author Robert William Chambers was an American author who is best known for his Art Nouveau short-story collection, The King in Yellow, considered to be one of the most important examples of American supernatural fiction. Chambers was a prolific writer, and although he continued to write within the weird genre, publishing The Maker of Moon, The Mystery of Choice, and The Tree of Heaven, none of his subsequent efforts achieved the success of The King in Yellow. Chambers early works greatly influenced the work of H.P. Lovecraft and other horror writers, as well as the 2014 HBO television show True Detective. Robert Chambers died in 1933 at the age of 68.Stefan Rudnicki first became involved with audiobooks in 1994. Now a Grammy-winning audiobook producer, he has worked on more than two thousand audiobooks as a narrator, writer, producer, or director. He has narrated more than three hundred audiobooks. A recipient of multiple AudioFile Earphones Awards, he was presented the coveted Audie Award for solo narration in 2005, 2007, and 2014 and was named one of "AudioFile" s Golden Voices in 2012.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Mystery and Supernatural Love Stories By larryloc@ioc.net Robert W. Chambers is best known for "The King in Yellow", his 1895 horror classic. He returned in 1897 with "The Mystery of Choice". The highlights of the book are the three Dick Darrel stories; The Purple Emperpr; Pompe Funèbre; and The Messenger. Of the three, The Messenger is the best and also the only supernatural story. Out of the remaining tails; The White Shadow & The Key to Grief - are okay but predicable; Passeur - is haunting; and A Matter of Interest - is laughable in light of modern paleontology. The book ends with a four page poem called Eavoi. I am not much for supernatural love poems of the last century. This is not the haunting madness of "The King of Yellow" but The Messenger, The Purple Emperor, and Passeur make it worth the money. For more information on the life and works of Robert W.
