About the Author George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright and a co-founder of the London School of Economics. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, in which capacity he wrote many highly articulate pieces of journalism, his main talent was for drama, and he wrote more than 60 plays. Nearly all his writings deal sternly with prevailing social problems, but have a vein of comedy to make their stark themes more palatable. Shaw examined education, marriage, religion, government, health care, and class privilege. He was most angered by what he perceived as the exploitation of the working class, and most of his writings censure that abuse. An ardent socialist, Shaw wrote many brochures and speeches for the Fabian Society. He became an accomplished orator in the furtherance of its causes, which included gaining equal rights for men and women, alleviating abuses of the working class, rescinding private ownership of productive land, and promoting healthy lifestyles... He is the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel Prize for Literature (1925) and an Oscar (1938), for his contributions to literature and for his work on the film Pygmalion (adaption of his play of the same name), respectively.

I was most impressed with the author's ability to successfully create a colorful (as in inflection-filled) and thus dynamic commentary. As to the somewhat transparent but, as highlited in the title, central topic, socialism, I feel this book has equally shown the positive and the negative consequences of its application all the while keeping true to its satire.

An Unsocial Socialist By A Customer Shaw's last, and in my opinion, best satire, An Unsocial Socialist is a wonderful book that is sadly not well known. The plot is pulls you in and the book spawned an equally great play, "Smash". I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Brown I really enjoyed George Bernard Shaw's writing and I found this book was enlightening about socialism; both good and bad points. The characters are well developed and there are just enough twists and turns in the plot to keep it interesting. The descriptions of exporting jobs and importing goods in late nineteenth century England, and how it affects the rich and the poor, hits home for the USA today!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Misleading Title By Alex D.G. The title was very misleading. When I downloaded this book, I expected to receive a book about the Aztecs. The first chapter contains a little bit of Aztec history, but even that is very sparse. This book basically describes the author's, an American as is mentioned quite often, travels through Mexico around 100 years ago. I found the book incredibly boring and the endless rants against the Catholic Church, even for a non-Catholic such as myself, became annoying after the third or fourth time. If you are interested in reading about Mexico 100 years ago, I recommend this book. However, if you are looking for a book about the Aztecs, then this book is not for you.

Boyer This is not a book, or even a copy of a book, by John Ruskin. This is a cheap, faded, retyped version of his book. It is impossible and impractical to read. A waste of time, paper, energy, and money.

The windows in the living room of the gray house are wide open patiently exchanging the tainted inner atmosphere of liquor and smoke for the fresh drowsiness of the late hot dusk. There are dying flower scents upon the air, so thin, so fragile, as to hint already of a summer laid away in time." This is the story of a young couple Anthony and Gloria Patch living out their days to the hilt in New York City as they await the death of Anthony's grandfather, Adam Patch from whom they expect to inherit his massive fortune. Gloria is a spoilt child from Kansas City turned into a sophisticated and most beautiful woman. Gloria does not intend to lift a finger to do any domestic work in the home, no matter how slight; while Anthony who considers himself an aesthete, finds it quite hard to get his act together and instead of buckling down to some work, prefers instead to hang with his wife and their friends on nightly binges. They drink and eat in the classiest restaurants and hotels, rent the most expensive apartments, travel out to the West in the spring time driving plush cars, wearing top-of-the-line clothing and just generally living it up high on the hog, as they wait. Meet Maury Noble who is Anthony best friend who spends his time between New York and Philadelphia; Richard Caramel who has just completed writing a book and looking for new ideas for a second one. Joseph Bloeckman from Munich who started out small in America and is now a big shot in Show Biz. Also the quiet Jewess Rachael Barnes and Muriel Kane who is young, flirtatious and sometimes a bit too talkative and Tana the Japanese housekeeper of the Patches. We are shown the Patches at their very best as the novel starts, with the world at their feet and loaded with cash with which they make very expensive choices. But, as we get further in, we see things begin to change gradually and we realize that those very choices will be their very downfall. It was quite a good read but it could be very heartbreaking at times as we put ourselves into the shoes of the main characters. All lovers of F. Scott Fitzgerald should read this book if you haven't done so already, and those of you who like reading about the ultra rich in the Roaring Twenties this one is for you. Moral depravity personified By Chris Salzer The genius of F.Scott Fitzgerald shines brilliantly in this vastly underappreciated classic novel of moral depravity. The pervasive themes of Fitzgerald include moral corruption, profligate behavior, agnosticism, selfishness, narcissism, egocentrism, and of course, a sick obsession with money and alcohol. These themes permeate all too well throughout the beautifully written The Beautiful and Damned(pardon the pun).Released in 1922, 2 years subsequent to the seminal This Side of Paradise and 3 years prior to the magnum opus The Great Gatsby, incomprehensibly, The Beautiful and Damned was not well received critically nor financially. As a result, history has erroneously filed it under the dubious sophomore jinx category. Strange it may seem, I vehemently disagree. As you read this book, you witness first-hand the maturation of an amazing writer. No American writer of the 20th Century can compare to the profound power and unwavering genius that is F.Scott Fitzgerald. If you enjoyed The Great Gatsby, you will no doubt enjoy this work - an equally beautifully writen and tragic tale of aspiring morally depraved young Americans in pursuit of The American Dream."Remarkable that a person can comprehend so little and yet live in such a complex civilization."

Teale Nearly ninety years after its first publication, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is still a shockingly relevant account of the entitlement class, the children of the rich or privileged who don't know how to navigate through life without big money. And, it's a New York City novel--written as only a mid-westerner can. It seems to me that because New Yorkers are too much in the middle of it to see themselves clearly, an intelligent "outsider" like F. Scott Fitzgerald must come along. To write as well as he did, Fitzgerald let the city inhabit him. New York got into his blood, and he recorded it in narrative right down to the dirt under the carpet. Fitzgerald's details lead the reader into the depths of the beautiful and doomed couple, the Gloria-Anthony entanglement, as they are part and parcel of the extremes of poverty and wealth (in the World War I era or the roaring 20s).I don't know how Fitzgerald knew what he knew about the human psyche, or specifically about how a young man might react when he is good-looking and swimming in money and New York, but Fitz's life at Princeton University among this set of people gave him the environment in which to observe; Fitzgerald supplied the story around which the narrative coheres. Of course, there are autobiographical elements to this novel--a lot of himself and Zelda--but what the literary art requires is critical distance. To put his main characters through some shameful scenes, Fitzgerald had to know what tough love is in the New York City context. He had to put his couple to the test, people who from birth had relied on the "religion" of charm and money. And the author had more than just critical distance: F. Scott had them down right! Every expression, every word. Gloria: "This is life! Who cares for the morrow." And you can see Anthony deciding to have one more drink, his speech becoming slurred, his manners maudlin. While Anthony and Gloria wait for his inheritance, we find out what they're made of.Most pleasurable about Fitzgerald's craft is his carefully-controlled technique of letting Anthony and Gloria visit hell (the "damned" in the title) while softening the harsh surgery-like light with well-timed, well-handled, lyrical sentences. In a single beautiful line, the passage of the winter sun describes both Fitzgerald's craft and his beautiful couple's descent: Gloria "lay still for a moment in the great bed watching the February sun suffer one last attenuated refinement in its passage through the leaded panes into the room" (p.173). Fitzgerald knew how to show the attenuated and refined way downhill.One more thing about the craft of writing: Only the omniscient narrator technique--which Fitzgerald employs--can show characters in shameful acts and show what they're thinking, and the circumstances in which they got there, and how they "need" money in order to "survive." I wonder if now, in nearly 2010, this novel is not more important than in 1922. More than ever, _The Beautiful and Damned_ is a national portrait. (I can see how "spending" money could be the "sex" in the novel.)Advice: Read this novel while in New York, if possible. The first time I read _The Beautiful and Damned_, I was living near 123rd (me, a Westerner!). I looked up every address in the novel (except for the gray house near Cos Cob, Conn.) and got to know New York through this novel. In fact, I could almost pick out their final apartment in Harlem near 127th.

Slanted towards the Stuart family (Charles, his wife, etc) and against the leaders of the commonwealth (Cromwell, etc). Romanticized like many books of this type by going into boring and sometimes unrealistic seemingly made up "details" of certain events. You have to decide what to "throw out". I did learn more about this family history and came to the conclusion that Charles II was lucky to get the throne back as did like so many of other English royalty. He spent too much money, had numerous mistresses,generally abused power and was lucky he did not meet the same fate as his father.Good stories, interesting points of view and after all my whining, I would still recommend it for the historical value..

Spotting a Downturn in the Stock Market in Time By laurens van den muyzenberg If you are an active investor you will find this a fascinating and useful book. It teaches you how to spot when a bull market will become a bear market in time. That is get out before the decline. Fischer explains in great detail why the majority of investors gets out too early before the bull market has peaked or too late when a bull market has already for a considerable period changed to a bear market. He shows how taking the Leading Economic Indicator, the LEI, seriously is the right way.Important reasons why investors get the timing wrong are lack of discipline and ignorance in the sense of wrong concepts. Discipline refers especially to not selling unnecessarily. Shares go up and down. Most investors when a position in a portfolio goes down consider selling and replacing it by a winner. They consider a small loss far more important than a large gain. This is behavior based on the past of what has already happened. Fischer points out that what matters is what is expected to happen in the next 30 months.Another important factor is the media that write about the stock market. People are more interested in bad news than good news, and therefore the majority of articles are written about short-term disappointments and negative developments further in the future than 30 months. His definite view is that both short-term opinions and extrapolations of the past and past 30 months predictions are useless for predicting changes from bull to bear and vice versa.Fischer points to more than thirty widely held views he considers wrong. Some examples. A high Price Earnings ratio (PE) has no validity in predicting a better or worse development than a low PE. Small companies do not have a superior long-term performance than large ones. The increase from long-term interest rates does not lead to a change in a bull market. Wars do not influence the stock market other than of the magnitude such as World War II. Fisher presents straightforward statistical proofs. He puts these concepts to tests to determine if these widely held view correspond to what happened in reality. It is necessary to look at a complete picture; there are always examples where these factors appeared to be right, but they are far fewer than when proven wrong. For learning to spot in time approaching bears and bulls this book is first class, five stars.Fisher frequently states that he is not a sociologist but nevertheless holds very negative opinions about politicians. Many people will have different views. His negative views of political leaders are so strong that they even get in the way of his statistical proofs. For example he states on page 132 that in 1938 the GDP started to increase when Franklin Roosevelt was president and on page 143 that a bear market reigned from 1934 to 1942. The reality is that already in 1934, FDR's second year in office, GDP increased with 10.8%. He states about the ACA on page 152 that the uninsured were reduced with between 7 to 10 million and on page 154 only with 1.1% which is only 3.5 million or half.Fisher as a non-sociologist has very definite opinions on government. He sometimes creates the impression that the kind of policies that President Hoover pursued most of the time of non-interference in the economy is the only right policy and political action. I nevertheless also enjoyed this part as he does also make thought-provoking comments on political action.

I've dabbled on and off with investments over the years, with streaks of success and patches of rockiness. This book helped me to rethink some of my basic approaches to my portfolio, and in fact I'm probably going to look at my investments this weekend and make some changes based on what I've learned. In particular, I've found that I'm paying too much attention to short-term news and letting it make me either too excited or too scared. The funny thing is that I kind of already knew that about myself, and often times I would make a change knowing that I probably shouldn't. Reading through this book has affirmed that I should stick more to fundamentals and not worry so much about what I read in the paper or see on TV.The book itself is an easy read and only took me two days to finish. It's also written in a way that seems easy to understand even for someone who doesn't have a background in investing or know all the technical jargon. I also like that there are a lot of charts and other graphics to visualize the points being made. I always find it easier to see a concept displayed in a graph so that was a big help for me.Would definitely recommend this book for anyone managing their own investments or just interested in how it works.

Not one of Fishers best efforts By Pete Ken Fisher is a good writer I have read about 5 of his 10 previous books , plus his Forbes articles for many years. Phil Fischer ( his father ) was a brilliant thinker and investor , Ken has obviously got that gene. If you have read Fisher's stuff and other similar thinking investment writers , the book does not offer much that is new. If you are looking for a book that is going to be the definitive guide on how to find the next great investments this is not the book for you. ( I don't think that exists ).This book might help you become a better " critical thinker " regarding your investment decisions.I gave this only three stars , not because it is bad book or promotes investing philosophies that I do not agree with , but because I think Fisher could have written a better book, he should have stopped at 10.

About the Author Flora Annie Steel (1847-1929) was the author of more than thirty books, most of which were novels describing Anglo-Indian life during the British Raj. She moved to India with her husband in 1867 and lived there for twenty-two years. Steel had a strong interest in traditional Indian culture and folk tales, and was a contemporary of John Lockwood Kipling, Rudyard Kipling's father, with whom she worked to encourage local arts and crafts. Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the leading figures from the Golden Age of British book illustration. He had an ornate pen-and-ink style, which was sometimes paired with subtle watercolours, and many of his books were published as de luxe limited editions. His reputation was founded after he illustrated Washington Irving's Rip van Winkle in 1905, followed by Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens for J. M. Barrie in 1906.

My first purchase was Tales of Mystery and Imagination (Calla Editions) and I was so impressed with the quality (wonderful illustrations, superior binding, etc.) that I began collecting the Calla books. The pages are thick. The print is beautiful. The illustrations are excellent. At a time when so many classics compromise on quality for profit, this edition is outstanding. I'm hoping for more English authors like Chesterton, Dickens, William Morris, etc to be published like this. There's a large quantity of low quality editions out there. I would really like an edition of Irish literature and poetry like this one.

By William James, Brasenose In most North American Universities, the office of Provost is so established that a handbook devoted to describing its role might seem superfluous. However, at a time when many British Universities have recently introduced, or are considering introducing the office, it is timely to be reminded that the role of the Provost in America is in flux. In pre-Reformation Britain, Provosts were commonly the chief subordinate of an Abbot, having responsibility for all those matters of a monastery’s function outside the Dean’s priestly jurisdiction. In the UK, a shadow of this tradition lingers in the title of the Head of colleges such as Worcester and the Queen’s in oxford, Kings in Cambridge, and University College London. In most major universities in the USA, the office of Provost in its current form is not as ancient as all that. With few exceptions, such as U Penn and Columbia, Provosts were only introduced in the middle of the 20th Century, and at Harvard the post has only been continuous since the mid-1990s.Even within the USA, the position of the Provost in the organization varies, but typically they are described as the Chief Academic Officer, and have management responsibility for the academic Deans who head the, typically, nine to twelve Schools or Faculties. Separately reporting to the President, most Universities have Vice-Presidents responsible for areas such as Finance, Estates, Development, Governance, and so on, sometimes arranged under a single Executive V-P. There are numerous variations on this structure, particularly concerning the whether offices for institutional analysis, planning, budgeting and staff development fall within the jurisdiction of the office of the Provost, the Executive vice-President or the President themselves. For readers unfamiliar with North American University administration, the Provost’s Handbook’s silence on this background might make it a little inaccessible at first, though Chapter 4 by R Michael Tanner, who was Provost at U Illinois, Chicago, entitled “the Scope of Academic Leadership at the Top” touches on the main features of the role.Each chapter is an essay by one or more former Provost, President or other University Leader, that bring a colourful range of perspectives to bear on the challenges faced by Provosts today. The chapters are grouped into two sections; the former looking thematically at sources of pressure and opportunities for change, and the latter at how to build productive relations with key players, such as the administrative VPs. Inevitably, as a multi-author work, the quality of evidence, analysis and explanation is very variable, but there are many nuggets of information and advice that any aspiring University leader would find invaluable. Readers looking for tables of institutional data, formal analysis of organization structures, worked examples of different approaches to budgeting or examples of dashboards and balanced scorecards to monitor delivery of strategy will be disappointed. Their absence from a work described as a “Handbook” does seem a surprising omission, and will limit its utility for budding provosts. However, as a more informal vade mecum, it provides plenty of useful hints.Repeating themes are the increasing complexity of University organizations, the danger of administrative bloat and faculty disengagement, the challenge of diversifying income and restraining costs, and the heightened awareness of the requirements of fee-paying students. Particularly useful advice is to be found in the Chapter on “how to lead the Faculty as a first among equals”, by Linda McMillin, a successful Provost who has returned to mainstream teaching and research. She eloquently makes the case that building mutual trust, understanding and respect between academics, Deans and the Provost is an essential, effortful and daily task, and gives many useful illustrations of successful models. John D Simon, Provost and Professor Chemistry at U Virginia, writes a thoughtful chapter on “strategic planning and the Office of Institutional Research”, which again highlights the need for consensus-building and a stepwise approach to achieving strategic change.When captaining your Faculty flotilla through the uncharted seas of learning, to have no agreed plan is to guarantee chaos and dissipation; but to stick rigidly to one compass bearing irrespective of the urgent calls from the crew is to risk loss of the whole convoy on the shores of an undiscovered continent.

About the Author Norman De Mattos Bentwich (originally Bentwitch) OBE MC (28 February 1883 – 8 April 1971) was a British barrister and legal academic best known for his work in the administration of Mandatory Palestine. During the British military administration of Palestine he served as Senior Judicial Officer, which continued in the civil administration after 1920 as Legal Secretary. The title was soon changed to Attorney-General, a post he held until 1931. A lifelong Zionist, Bentwich was close to the moderate wing of the movement. As the Arab-Jewish conflict in Palestine escalated, his presence in the mandatory government became an embarrassment to the British. In November 1929 he was slightly wounded in an assassination attempt, but recovered and conducted the defense of his would-be assassin. In 1930 he went on leave to England and a year later his appointment was terminated. From 1932 to 1951 he occupied the Chair of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was also President of the Jewish Historical Society.

This book provides a great frame of reference, as you begin your journey in putting data to work.The balance of using a fictional story and levity to highlight important concepts makes it very relatable and an easy enjoyable read.A fun and fast read that would make you smarter, irrespective of your role.

A new classic and REQUIRED READING By LG If you're in a sales leadership and/or sales operations role in a B2B organization, you need to read this book yesterday. I can think of many books that address the nuts and bolts of methodology and process, but none that cover the fundamental issues related to data and operations in such a comprehensive and compelling way. By writing about a fictional set of characters (whose roles include Chief Sales Officer, VP of North American Sales, Head of Sales Enablement and Training, Director of Marketing, Director of Sales Operations, etc.) struggling to turn around revenues in a global company, Dearborn shows how you can transform a business to become predictive and agile, and how leaders can leverage data to "skate where the puck is." If you want to create a solid foundation for your company to achieve consistent, repeatable sales success, you should put this at the top of your reading list.

By Morgan Kalakosky I attended the Sales 2.0 conference where author Jenny Dearborn presented on the topic of business analytics. She gave attendees a copy of this book that I read 1/3 of during the Caltrain ride home. I've since read about 2/3s of the book and found it to be worthy of five stars. It's possible when I finish I could change my mind but at this point I doubt it will.The fictional story (normally a trope in sales books that I loathe) is eerily familiar to me and I'm sure you'll find some of the characters very very similar to people you know and work with at your own company. From this framework Jenny lays out a very clear and actionable path towards using organization data not just to understand what's going on but provides a roadmap for where you want to go.Can't wait to give a copy to my SVP of sales and CEO. Hope you have a similar experience when you read Data Driven as well.

About the Author The best-known of the French Romantic writers, Victor Hugo was a poet, novelist, dramatist, and political critic. Hugo was an avid supporter of French republicanism and advocate for social and political equality, themes that reflect most strongly in his works Les Mis?rables, Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), and Le Dernier jour d'un condamn? (The Last Day of a Condemned Man). Hugo's literary works were successful from the outset, earning him a pension from Louis XVIII and membership in the prestigious Acad?mie fran?aise, and influencing the work of literary figures such as Albert Camus, Charles Dickens, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Elevated to the peerage by King Louis-Philippe, Hugo played an active role in French politics through the 1848 Revolution and into the Second and Third Republics. Hugo died in 1885, revered not only for his influence on French literature, but also for his role in shaping French democracy. He is buried in the Panth?on alongside Alexandre Dumas and ?mile Zola.

Serious fiction By Edward Victor Hugo's 1868 novel "The Man Who Laughs" (l'Homme qui rit) is the superb narrative of a young man who, as a child, was abducted, sold and deformed -- obstensibly for profit, but, as it turns out, for dark political reasons as well. To tell too much of Gwynplaine's story is to give away the plot's secrets, though the truth is its key secret is revealed less than 200 pages into the novel. Set in England at the end of the 17th Century and the beginning of the 18th, "The Man Who Laughs" skewers English aristocracy the way "Les Misérables" (1862) did French authorities. Gwynplaine's long denunciation in the House of Lords is obviously Hugo speaking, while depictions of the scheming Barkilphedro, the dissolute Lord David Dirry-Moir, and the strange Josiana (whose passive-aggressive sexuality would have fascinated Freud) are reflections of the Stuart dynasty's ugly corruption "its features hidden by a mask of joy". (Queen Anne herself is dismissed as a fool.) The only pure characters are Dea, a blind woman in love with Gwynplaine, and Homo, a wolf. Even Ursus, the itinerant philosopher, seems to fight his humanity, denying the love he feels for his three companions: the scarred man, the blind woman, and the animal. Why this magnificent novel is not better known is a mystery. One reason, perhaps, is that it would be difficult to dramatize. (There was a 1928 silent film version which is rarely if ever shown.) There have, of course, been several versions of both "Les Misérables" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", not to mention a megamusical based on the former. Hugo's prolixity and his penchant for sesquipedalian words must make translation an enormous chore, which is why Joseph Blamire's English translation (to my knowledge the only English translation to date) came out a full twenty years after the original publication. For the average 21st Century reader, this is nourishment not easy to digest. Hugo's style is a series of lengthy descriptions and digressions filled with obscure references. I've got one word for you: skim. But don't skim so rapidly that you miss some of the shining epigrams: "Aristocracy is proud of what women consider a reproach -- age! Yet both cherish the same illusion, that they do not change." Obviously, this is not junk food. On the contrary, for readers with rich tastes "The Man Who Laughs" is a literary feast.

More specifically, it maybe stated as: "The injustice and inhumanity meted out to, and the exploitation and oppression of the underprivileged, impoverished and vulnerable section of society by the privileged, powerful and wealthy."According to Hugo, this is the fundamental problem of mankind - in fact, the essential condition of mankind.TMWL is Hugo's most vehement denunciation of the evils and iniquities that exist in human society.He has not just denounced (with bitter sarcasm) the masters of the human race-exposing the emptiness, immorality and meaninglessness of their lives-condemning their lust for power, their total disregard for the sufferings of mankind and their abuse of power and position- but has also shown how ugly and devastating is the oppression of the poor and weak.Integrated with this theme is the (secondary) theme of the conflict between moral and immoral love-love guided by the spirit and love guided by the flesh.At yet another level, the theme is : "The struggles of man-against all the forces in life which seek to destroy his spirit and cow him down- against evils in society, against weaknesses and evils within his own self and against the destructive forces of nature."Whether man triumphs or not, is determined by the purpose Hugo wants to accomplish.In TMWL, the antagonizing flaws as well as the overwhelming genius of Hugo reach their highest pitch. Never has Hugo dwelt so lovingly and carefully on each and every situation, thought, emotion and character. His characterization has rarely reached the depth and complexity as it does here:Gwynplaine - the symbol of the basic problem confronting mankind-embodiment of the entire idea (& all the themes) dramatized by the novel.Ursus - the symbol of wisdom, knowledge, justice and humanity driven by the injustice and oppression around him into bitterness, fear, cynicism - and hatred for man.Dea-the symbol of Ideal love - based on the recognition of the values held by and virtues of man, totally oblivious of his physical appearance-love which has eyes only for the soul.Barkilphedro - the symbol of hatred for the sake of hatred - who finds pleasure in others' sorrows.Josiana - the most fascinating creation of Hugo-is meant to symbolize immoral love - a "love" which is a negation of the very meaning of love and a negation of values. Her craving for the uncommon, extraordinary or abnormal is not for the sake of these- but arises from her conception of herself-as something absolutely out of this world (which she is). Since she is the epitome of the different, beyond conformity, beyond the common pale of life-she shall have only that which is as uncommon, shocking, scandalizing and unique as she is-whether a God or a monster-morality, values, virtues, vices don't matter (reflecting, as an extreme case, the irrelevance of moral values in the lives of the rich-& how meaningless is their concept of love).Hugo's style is at its poetic best-the imagery, the language, the metaphors are so colorful, vivid and lyrical that it makes a standard and a genre of its own- unequaled and unsurpassed.However, he tends to drag issues and keeps repeating one thing beyond any conceivable necessity.His interrupting essays make reading tiresome at times.He gives too many unnecessary details.As to the plot structure, Hugo being a master plot-maker, it is tightly constructed but relies too heavily on coincidence and accident (which Hugo has unconvincingly tried to render logical).But these drawbacks, however exasperating, cannot but be ignored in the face of the startling ingenuity and originality of the story, the depth which Hugo reaches in exploring the human soul(the profound psychological and philosophical depiction of Gwynplaine's ripening manhood, his maturing sexuality-in all its confusion, agony and ecstasy is beautiful), the amazing artistry of his symbolism( one of the best being the dead body rotting in the open - symbolizing the monstrosity of human laws), and the grandeur and sweeping drama of his scenes-the best, most unforgettable ones being the climax scene (in the House of the Lords) and the one dealing with the fate of the hooker carrying the escaping Comprachicos (which I think is the best scene ever written-it is simply unsurpassable).In the end, I'd like to say that TMWL is one of the most powerful and compelling novels ever written. It is more than just a novel- it is a great work of art. The fact that this novel is hardly known today and has always been either ignored or condemned by critics is a sign of the disintegration of literature and art.

28 of 31 people found the following review helpful. The best novel by Hugo By A Customer I first read this book ten years ago and marvelled at the powerful writing and timeless themes. This book was my first introduction to Hugo and I could not wait to read his masterpieces: "Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Les Miserables". Although I acknowledge that these books are wonderful, I still hold that "The Man Who Laughs" is just as good, if not better, and more emotionally gratifying than other Hugo's classics.I first read this story in Russian and the English translation disappointed me. It was more choppy and rough than the Russian version and lacked the sofistication of the latter. However, it is still a great book nonetheless. The story is rich with complex characters that no one will soon forget. The human weakness of Gynplaine is very appropriate and his demise is almost poetic. Nobody should miss out on reading this incredible story and judge for themselves if it deserves to stay out of print when it is for sure one of the greatest novels ever written.The only negative aspect of the book that, although it did not bother me, may bother some readers is the preacheness of Gynplaine and Ursus, albeit done very masterfully. The character of Dea is too saintly. Although she needs to be very pure for the story to work, she is virtually a saint which is unsettling and makes the reader treat her at an arm's length instead of getting her into their souls as they undoubtfully do with Gynplaine. The whole milieu is very dark and that may make some people uncomfortable. When I first read it, it took me a long time to want to re-read it although I found it to be one of the best books I have ever read.These negative points are more than acquited by extremely well-told story with characters and situations that are unique and unforgettable. I though that this "old" story would not give me any new insight but it did. This story's major plus is my favorite character, Josianna: she is extremely complex although I got the feeling that Hugo wanted to make her more one-dementional. Still, her scene when she finds out that Gynplaine is a Lord and is going to be her husband is a brilliant testament to her wild and uncomformist nature.I urge anyone who has not read it to read it. Even if they do not like it, they will find the experience worth-while. For those readers who love Hugo, this is a not-to-be-missed read. For those readers who do not like Hugo, this is a must.
